To be clear the president s actions are not dangerous in terms of the outcome of this election. States will certify the results. Joe bide listen become president on january 20th. He is meeting with democratic Leadership Today to discuss their plans moving forward. What donald trump is doing is alarmingly dangerous for our democracy. For the peaceful transfer of power. For the fight for truth and against the spread of disinformation. For any hope of our divided Country Living in the same shared reality. The fact that these attempts to steal an election are almost comically inept. Like when they sited states from minnesota to explain fraud in michigan. And arguing that the election should be overturned does not make the attempts less harmful to our institutions. But many Republican Leaders are silent in the face of these attacks on our democracy. Some are actively helping the president try to steal an election either out of fear of retribution of their own for for their own thirst for power. History will not be kind to them. Joining me now is ali vitali and ashley parker. Lets start with what is happening right now and what will mather in the next couple months bhap are they discussing today . It is about covid and the stimulus package. Theyre in agreement over the fact that they would like to see something get done but the reality is that capitol hill has been not moving at all on this issue and the two parties are still very far apart on where they would like to be on a deal. What were going to see today is joe biden physically meeting with nancy pelosi and chuck schumer. The first time were going to see them in the same space. The question is, if joe biden is going to be able to parlay the nature he made on the campaign trail. A person with deep washington ties, able to reach across the isle, that is something that that push talked about a lot on the campaign trail, but washington and the senate have changed a lot since joe biden was part of that body and negotiating with that party. So the question is we know that washington has become very intransigent. And on this issue as much as everyone is in agreement in getting relief to americans, that has not man feted in manifested into any action. The fact that he is basically running in place as opposed to running forward, that is something he is growing frustrated by. We saw a ratcheting up of rhetoric as we saw him talk about the irresponsible of President Donald Trump and the Trump Administration for allowing this kind of bureaucratic purgatory to continue on. I will say that might be the mood, but in terms of datangibl action were told that advisors are concerned about getting them to retain these results. It could leave them further bogs down in legal action if the courts were not to side with them on the transaction thats have to get going and fast. I wonder if this current environment has hit the biden team that theyre going to be walking into washington not just with an intransigent congress, but a congress where around half of the lawmakers have tried to help the president either silently or actively overturn the will of the people. How do they plan finding a way out of all of this and running a country in a successful way. On one hand they did sort of plan for the fact that this tran sigts could be bumpy and obviously that is how it is playing out. A lot of barriers still in their path here. At the same time this is the same washington that a lot of these people have operated in for many years. I have been told by several people around this transition that while the actual transition is bumpy and barrier filled, youre doing a lot with the people that have been been here before. She has been a member of the senate body in the course of the last several years. She knows how business does and doesnt get done these days. Joe biden also knows his way around the government. He knows the levers to pull. He knows what it is like to be in the situation room in the High Pressure environments. Many of the staff, we continue to see see him roll out senior staff and cap nit membbinet mem. They have not been out of power for that long. I think this is something you plan for in washington. People may want to get things done but action does not come easily here. You mentioned nancy pelosi, let me read to you what play book is reporting about nancy pelosi. Apparently on thursday night she called the president a psyc psychopathic nut. Ashley. Let me read something to you about this president. At first trump seemed rather deflat deflated. Now he has long vacillated on giuliani, he has been buoyed by his energy. Many were delling him he was unlikely to win a second term, was he buoyed by the performance last night where giuliani appeared to have mascara running down his face. He made no since, and sidney hoyer said this was a communityist plot by china and just a fever dream of what we saw yesterday . The president is someone who is deeply image conscious. So the president has been, after the initial couple days where he was as we reported deflated but philosophically understanding he would have to concede. He is obsessed with conspiracy theories. He is prone to con conspiracy theories to begin with, but i spoke to someone that spoke to the president and said the president would not stop asking, for instance, about the dominion voting systems, how they were rigged and fraudulent and i have to pause to say there is no evidence of this. What rudy jougiuliani was espoug is something that the president very much believes. Another person in touch with the president said this is a president who will never really be able to come to terms with the notion that he lost to joe biden fair and square. He got a historic amount of thoses and joe biden got an even higher number of votes. So he likes to see someone like rudy fighting for him but it may be slightly better astetices and coherence, you have to imagine. The thing he hates the most, being a loser. Anyone that covered him and watched him in the last 20 years or more knows that about him except that now it is not just a reality show or his image in the tabloids here in new york. I know we have been talking about what is happening in wayne county for a few days now, but can we get back to basics here . What are the republicans in wayne county, these two board members, alleging happened in detroit . Well what theyre alleging is that they were under a lot of i guess recent, the most recent scenario that is causing them to say why theyre trying to ask for a revote, which is not allowable, theyre saying that the secretary of state chose not to do an audit of the general election for the unexplained out of balance precincts. That was being made when we had not even asked the secretary of state to conduct the audit. This is, in my opinion, more of the dwhash is being driven in this white house to throw out the votes of the delirium tremens michigan, we know the results are real and accurate, but for some reason he and his Team Continues to be moving towards trying on monday to get the state board of canvassers to not certify the election. But what donald trump and his team do not seem to understand is that here in michigan, the decemb discretion does not exist. The state board of canvassers is mandated to certify the election. And bringing into the election, hijacking legally and lawfully, that is unheard of. We in plishds not tolerate that and those legislatures that can go eat tea and cookies, but when they come back here they will have to abide like all of the Election Officials in this state have to as well. Im not sure they offered tea and cocdock cookies here at thi house. Let me ask you about something that monica palmer, a republican board member, said about you earlier in a press conference, lets play it. Children that public commentary, the vice chair pulled me into the back of the warehouse and offered me a compromise. He said he had been on the phone with democrats throughout the state trying to find a solution to help certify the results in wayne county. He assured me that he had confirmation from Governor Whitmer that they would be about to get an independent audit done to clarify the precincts unidentified. Did you assure her an independent audit. The process of making the request to the second tear of state. The governor played no role. I told her i did not speak with the governor. I said i spoke with the secretary of state, the department of elections, and that i was not able to reach them. I did tell her that i reached a democratic official. She clearly nose because even at the table she said that we would ask stake holders and communities to join with us in asking for the secretary of state to conduct this audit nap is why she chose to put in the resolution that we adopted command. She knew that we could not demand the secretary of state to conduct an audit. But she wanted to show that we wanted the secretary of state to move in this regard. Because she said she did not trust the secretary of state or the governor, to conduct this aud disape then i explained to her look, i will have a kerks with the democratic stakeholders and it will be different between the primary election when we ask. She was concerned that the investigation had not been done when we asked in the primary. So i said we will not go by ourselves. Well reach out to other stake holders to ask the secretary of state as it related to this audit. Do you think there needs to be an audit . Let me say something. No, let me say this to you. The secretary of state conducts post election audits all of the time. What im saying is of course. And i believe as of yesterday the secretary of state agreed today do exactly what we requested. On today youre going to have or have had the certification of the electoral votes in georgia, on monday the state board of canvassers in michigan is going to meet and certify the results in michigan if is the case that there has been some talk of lawlessness in wayne county, michigan, and on the state canvassing board as well. There have been noises about that. If republican members of that board decline to vote to certify the election there are ways of compelling them do so legally and they can also be replaced on the board as the vice chairman of that board, the wane county board just said on your show, this is not a discretionary act in is a ministerial function that they play. Theyre commanded by law to certify the election. So one way or the other, with whatever there is, the election in michigan is going to get certified and over the next few week and a half or so, the Election Results in the other battleground states will be certified as well. Ben, let me ask you to respond to something that a former michigan canvas board member said on Rachael Maddow last night talking about the two legislatures. Listen to what he said. The likelihood of either of these two leaders, who have been involved in nonsense like the armed protests at the capital this year, both of them were directly involved in those instances, if they could not stand up to these clowns that showed up at the capital in michigan with long guns, there is no way they will stand up to someone like trump at the white house. He is saying if donald trump pressures them to overturn the results he believes they will not stand up to the president even though the Senate Majority leader, a legislature at the white house today, said repeatedly that he will not overturn the will of the people. Yeah, so a couple things. First i dont know michigan politics especially well. So i dont want to hold myself out as having insight into the individuals in question. That said, the state legislature of michigan, once this is certified, as an extremely limited, which is to say no, role, in appointing electors. Now could a lawless state legislature try to appoint a competing late of trump electors . Yes, it could. But under federal law the electors appointed under processes set up by the state in advance of the election will be counted by congress. And so i think that, you know, this sequence that we have had of these very unsettling efforts to not accept the election, theyre very, very disturbing and upsetting because theyre, you know, theyre really just a dangerous corrosion corrosion of Election Results. On january 20th i dont think they do. Yeah. That is the point that were trying to make. Legally they do not have a battle. This is very dangerous for their ability to move forward if is highly corrosive, and the current president is the one sitting for it. The risk here, the risk here, is first of all that we formalize the idea that it is okay not to accept the results of an election. Once you go down that road there is all kinds of mischief. The second really important thing is if a large number of people dont believe the Election Results have integrity, some of them can get violent. We have seen low grade election related violence. When people really believe wrongly that the election is being stolen from them, and that the wrong person won, you know, some of them will do really bad and stupid stuff. And you know that is a very scary thing and you know tensions are really high and dont pour gasoline on those flames. Youre not just saying that and i have to go. Ly read this quickly. Well, im not sure what the public should know about the process other than that im very confident that this new administration will make science job one. I have seen that already. When you look at this situation right here, were in the most dangerous Public Health moment since 1918 right now. Were not sure when the curve might ever flatten, so we have to understand that the public is part of the solution here, too. Lets just make that very clear. He knows. He was appointed by trump but yet maintained his integrity throughout his job and remember, when donald trump fired him, simply because this guy took charge of this agency, the cisa, under homeland security, managed thousands of employees, and put out a statement that the past election was the most secure in american history. That is a fact. People voted in droves despite the pandemic. For droump be undermining this democracy every day, for public servants, it is a travesty. I hope that people listen to chris krebs. He is someone that i have gotten to know and respect so much. I get down to the point, as im literally looking at an ambulance in my neighborhood right now, we cant wait any more. We cant go through the seven stages of grief with this president. We need to move on with this company.
