I am here tonight to tell you, to warn, this election is a decision between preserving america as we know it and eliminating everything that we love. Your family will not by safe in the radical democrats mem. They want open borders, closed schools, dangerous amnesty and will selfishly send your jobs back to china while they get rich. Joe biden and the rad dam left are coming for their freedom of speech. Republicans looking to shore up the struggling bandy space. Democrats buoyed by first hadnt address worry those attacks are resulting in an intentional slowdown. With images of dismand the sorting machines. They normally sort tens of thousands of envelopes joining us today is monica alba, and the Washington PostWhite House Bureau theyve and author of a very stable genius is phil rucker. Both of you welcome. Monica last night it was a lot of doom and gloom, prediction of destruction if the president were were to take power. How do they feel about the messages, that it was not appealing to anyone more they should already have in their camp. Exactly, katy. Those speeches were american very clearly for the base. With what we actually heard from several speakers, and of course you have to remember the convention started earlier in the day with the president s over 50minute speech in charlotte, North Carolina that had its own litany of false claims. When you ask officials how to square these two things, they say they think thats the Important Message to voters who might still be making of their minds. Both of these themes can exist at the same time. You can have senator scott and former Ambassador Nikki Haley maze broad speeches about why they believe in this president and advocating for a second term, while others are speaking to though with more incendiary language. Theres no doubt about it, there was a good amount of revisionist history, and some of those preproduced videos when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic. A lot of mentions what the president did, very little mentioned of the death toll you saw the president continue to use the white house as a political backdrop. He appeared in both of those messages and speeching from the eat room that was the first example of that. With he can expect to see the president tonight in a similar capacity, were told and hell be making appearances tomorrow as well before his big actual speech on the south lawn before an audience of more than 1,000 people, again, in the middle of a Health Crisis thats still onagain. Phil, on the question of who the republicans were speaking to last night, why go after the base so. You would think so, katy, but the president for 3 and a half years vab fixated on his Political Base on ways to galvanize them, to increase their loyalty to him, and ensure she all turn out and vote. As monica mentioned there were also overtures to a broader collision from nikki haley and tim scot. Both have been seen to be trying to appeal to white voters who may have even drifted away from trump with a message, you know, this can be an inclusive party, trumps american is an american where i belong and you belong, too. Clear his that message was overshadowed, but there seems to be a dual strategy at place. He appears to be including a man released from turkey. He also praised president erdogan, the man who imprisoned him. This was a taped piece. They didnt edit that part out. What does that say . I could harly believe it. The reason that pastor brunson was held as a prisoner in turkey is because of the brutal regime of erdogan. The President Trump just complimented erdogan in front of the pastor brunson. I dont know why that was left in the video. Presumably the Convention Planners and Production Team did not consider it to be a political liability for the president , and perhaps the president wanted to keep it in there to send a message to erdog erdogan. Such a confusing decision. Monica al better, thank you. Phil rucker, thank you as well. The polls looking worse than they did in 2016. Joining mess from the big board is steve kornacki. The Trump Campaign will say, hay, listen,al polls showed you behind, everyone counted us out. Its just the same for this election. Can you make that claim honestly . At this point, this race looks very different than 2016 did. The question is will the two converge . The democrats this their convention this week. This average right now, not any sign of a bounce for pipeden, but it is a sizable lead for biden, a sevenpoint, sixpoint lead in the average for the polls. Lets put it in context, 2020 verse 2016. Were going to take you through a cup 8 different categories. This is polls over the summer months, basically from june 1st of 24 year until now, compared to june 1st to this date in 2016. In the summer of 2016, Hillary Clintons average lead, if you look at it every day in the average of polls, she averaged a lead of 4. 3 points. Joe bidens summer lead has been basically double that. 8. 3 for biden now. A bigger steadier late. How high can the lead get in the summer of 2016 . Hgh hb uk biden has able to get it higher here, over ten double digits. Higher average lead, higher ceiling, and theres this, if this is as good as biden did, as good as hillary did, how good it itu did trump do . Where he got slightly ahead. This summer so far, this is where you see the biggest difference. Its to trail by 6 1 2 points. Thats the biggest difference. That gets to what youre asking, katy, so far very, very different than 2016. Heres an tune that they can make this race look more line 2 did in 16. Steve, theyre going to say they es national polls, and they dont matter. Youre looking for the best for 2016 and the best for now, does it show such a large gap translate into a differencemaking number of votes in the Electoral College . Try and figure out where that line is, where biden won by the popular vote, theres no combination in the Electoral College. There would be so large. That number exists some somewhere somewhere, but its more of an art than a science at this point. Clinton won the popular vote by two in 2016. If he was winning anywhere around there its just very, very heart to see how a margin that big could translate into an Electoral College victory, but the world is full of surprises. Steve, thank you very much. Republicans did try to make an appeal to suburban women, warning them no family is safe. They chock tse the mccloskey fa, theyre facing charges for waving weapons outside their suburbs. Theyre not satisfied with spreading the chaos and violence into our communities. They want to abolish the suburbs altogether by ending singlefamily zoning. This would bring lowquality apartments in now thriving suburbens. No matter where you live, your family will not be safe in the radical democrats area. The poor people are coming to get you. We traveled to union county, North Carolina to see who was hearing that message thats where we find chris jansing. Sh the voters on the fence about him this time . Was that a message that will sway them or bring them back to donald trump . I spent hours talking to suburban women. The republicans continue to see the world through the lens of donald trump. Everyone from aboris to immigration while democrats try to demonize them. Three republicans, one democrat, take a listen. Speaking for White America, were not bad people. We are very angry that africanamericans and the black American Community has been marginalized, victimized so what happens is its like if you align yourself with rumph, youre a racist. Ive tried to have these conversations, was forcefed i was wrong just because i was a white woman and i was a trump supporter. We are suddenly all bad. So i think where White America feel frustrate the makes us want to vote for trump. So its kind of backfiring. He wants to reinstate the United States back to where i dont which america youre seeking . 20iers . Ten years ago . Is the 1940s . 1950s . We were discriminated against, we were vilified. We do not want to go back to that, but believe in a democracy, thats the country we want to see. There was such an intensity, both side saying they believe democracy is at stake, but obviously their view is different. They did want to continue that conversation. Part of it may be what you see behind me this mob march has been standing there since 1910. Theres been a call for it to come down. I happened to run into althea, and i asked, what goes through your mind when you see that day after day . Quite simply, katy, she says its very upsetting. Was he appealing to somebody he needed to bring badge into the fold . This is exactly what phil was talking about. This is his base, the core supporters. Again they feel like hes delivered. If anything, they fear a presidency by joe biden, but he cant afford slippage in places like this. Maybe you could make the argument he could possibly win without his getting totally beyond his base. And there is from what we have seen here, its not slipping. If democrats can turn out such a donald trump is going to need more than just his base. Remember, the margins were very slim. Chris jansing, thank you so much. Later on im going to talk with an official where protests continue in the where shorting machines have been dismantled, and alabama secretary of state will tell us house voting will work in his state. Last hour, when i asked the president to blink the lights on and off if he was washing, clearly hes like do it again . Quarterbacks fox friends conceded that was a joke. It was a computer effect, but the joke only works because everyone knows there is truth behind in. Last night President Trump could do no wrong, 170,000 americans didnt die under his watch from a pandemic that he mismanaged, and the economic was great, or quickly on its way to being great again. If you were a regular viewer of fox news, the reality wouldnt have been so absurd. On fox the president s failures are glossed over or ignored. His achievemented are exaggerated. Never before has a tv Network Effectively produced 9 president s briefing, never before has a president promoted a single tv channel, asked the host for advice action demanded them to be fired when they step youve had line. Brian, always good to see you. Lets talk about this book and how it relates to the interesting thats coming up. And his ability to retain power he would have had to appeal to the rest of the country. Hes ruined them be doing a disservice, but he wants more and more of that. He wants to be told every day how great hes doing. Thats why he attacks the news anchored on fox. That former host left baas they werent comfortable with the way things were going at fox. Thats why i had to write this book, because trump did take over the channel in a way thats unpress didnted. What do you mean when sudden describe the relationship as lielaundering . This is what happens when something starts on fox, some crazy thing starts on fox, trump picks up on it, tweets about it, and then the rest of us, all the rest of the networks, we cover the story. But they start pointing out they dont point out that the smear started on their airways. He act like the president came up with it out of thin air. I think its irresponsible that nobody is firmly in charge to make sure the information doesnt get on the air. Unfortunately, the audience, they eat it up. Ratings are higher than ever before, because viewers are told every day, not to trust anything else. Theyre told Everything Else could be a hoax, a fake. Ultimately thats dangerous for democracy. We need a healthier, conservative media ecosystem. Impeachment, it was often said that president nixon would have remained in office, and remained in office if he had fox news behind him. What does fox news mean for the president s reelection in november . I think this year proved that thesis to be right, that nixon would have survived, because trump survived. The question now is whats going to happen if trump loses his reelection bit or is it the Network Bigger than he is . Im you have the view that fox is even big are than trump. So whether you love fox, you hate it, you want to crate a rivalry, you have to understand how it work. It works like no other network on the planet. But as one commentator set to me, he is our frankenstein. We created him, and now we dont know what hes going to do next. Why are they still there . That is the question i asked over and over again. Answer is there were three answers. People feed like the money is really good. Theyre not going to get a job anywhere else, and they feel the power, you know . The president is tweeting about your story. The president is tweeting about what you just said or wrote. That can feel powerful, special, even though ultimately i think its done the country a disservice. That power can perhaps by exciting, can get you high. I think it is about money. I had many people say theres too much money in this network to change, and some of the commentator, who pointed out some of the president s crimes. Napolitano, he was told by a manager said to me, napolitano should hush, go home and count his money. The book is called hoax. Great laze on it, and congratulations for surviving the best editor in publishing. Just like you. Thank you, katy. A post an employee provided nbc news with how mail sorting machines are being kept out of the commission, and why the president s attack on mailin voting are confusing some residents down there. Well, there you go. The gentleman may answer the question without being interrupted the question is, will you put the machines back . The answer is no. Usps workers want to take matters into their own hands. Geoff bennett are those postal workers linking with the decommissioned machines, are they links this with the president and louis dejoy making a concerted effort to slow down the mail, or is this coincident . In a word, katy, yes. Theres no explanation for it. Theres one in tacoma, washington, and one in dallas, texas, postal workers with permission have attempted to repair and reinstall the machines. A postal employees at the dallas plant provided this image. Im told they spent the last week or so bush they got a directive yesterday, im told from usps that workers were not permitted to reinstall the machines. The barcode readers had been trashed. You cant process them without the barcode readers. Even as louis said this plan existed before him, it is true hes executed the plan to remove these highvolume sorting machines. In the document i obtained where we got that document, showing that all of these machines were slated to be taken out, it was dated in june, well after mr. Dejoy was on the job. Katy. Really quickly, are they saying they wont be able to handle the amount of election mail because of dismantling machines like this . It changes from facility to facilities. Some say they have the capacity, they said that machine has in fact first raised red flags about this. She says because of the cuts to overtime theyre more reliant on the machines, and without machines, there are delays. Not every one of these machines has dismantled. In some cases theyre just sitting in a corner unplugged, but the workers dont have the authority to plug it back in. There are some postal mechanics which taken out these machines following orders. Some of them have kept the barcode readers in place. Even though capacity is up because of the pandemic and the Postal Service has excess capacity, at some point they assume that people will start sending letters against, so the demand will go back up, and so this could be a complicated problem here, a complicating factor, in that theres more people sending letters and packages, yet the machines are all offline, katy. Geoff bennett, thank you so much. John merrill joins me now, as we try to get to as many secretaries of state through the country as we did to get clarification. So mr. Secretary, thank you for being here with us. Are you ready confident that the Postal Service will be able to handle the surge in mailin ballots that will be coming for your state . We do believe well have an inordinate amount, causing a concern for the Postal Service, of course, but our recordbreaking numbers we anticipate as well as through the absentee process. What do you tell them . Well, certainly we tell them, you could make theres nothing that stops anyone from going ahead and applying for the ballot. Almost of one of our 67 counties is our that way they can have their ballot mailed to them immediately when they have been produced. You know when i go to trump events and ask voters how they feel about mailin ballots they repeat much of what he says, theyre fraudulent, theyre rife for cheating, and the election will only be stolen from the president if mailin ballots will be used. Youve said youve heard similar confusion when voters talk about mailin ballots. Katy, there is a significant difference between uniformed vote by mail and between absentee voting by mail. The first thing is to make sure the educational process takes place so our voters know we dont have universal vote by mail. If we did, that would mean all 3,632,245 registered voters in our state would actually get a ballot mailed to the location that they indicate was their place to receive that ballot. Here they need to show the initiative to have a absentee ballot, but no need to wait. They need to make application for the ballot, process the ballot, and vote today. Mr. Secretary of state, thank you so much for joining us. If you live in alabama, here is what you need to provide for this application a copy of your valid photoi h identificat as well as two witnesses. We do appreciate your time. Thank you for having me. The storm was expect to do gain in intensity before making landfall possibly as a category 3 hurricane with a storm surge of up to 13 feet. Residents are being asked to level and head for shelters, including port arthur, texas, home to the countrys largest oil refinery. With me now is nbc correspondent morgan chesky. How do you accomplish an evacuation and bus people out of an area in the middle of a pandemic where youre supposed and put them in shelters in when youre suppose to do keep your distance from people. Its an incredibly delicate job. Their doing their best. Well see shall happen from texas all the way to louisiana, which is expected to take the brunt of hurricane lauras force. We just left of civic center here in port arthur where dozens and dozens of cool buses were lined up. Theyre loaded on to go about 100 miles north of where we are. Behind me is one of the c130s from the Texas Air National guard. Its been deployed to this area, standing by for its mission. This could be a mission of sending supplies, helping people evacuation if the buses arent enough. Thats the kind of scale we are looking at especially with the fact that laura has intensified to a category 1 hurricane as its expected to make landfall as a category 3. Folks who live in this area have very vivid memories of the pain of Hurricane Harvey which came here and dropped nearly 60 inches of rain, creating flooding that was of biblicallike proportions. So the deja vu element is a very painful one for a lot of these folks. Fortunately thats why were seeing people be response everyone, the storm surge that laura could bring up to spoke feet high could be incredibly dangerous as it rolls its way inland. We know back with prior hurricanes, particularly in lake charles, louisiana, which is about an hour to the east of where i am, they had storm surge rolling up for 50 miles inland, katy. Thats the kind of storm that people are now expecting come Late Wednesday when laura shows itself. Katy . Certainty frightening right now. Morgan, thank you so much. The black man shot several times in the back by police in wisconsin is now paralyzed from the waist down, according to his father. Doctors dont know yet if the paralysis is permanent, but 29yearold jacob blake is in stable condition after undergoing surgery for his wounds. The shooting and the unrest it sparked continued into a second night of fiery protests in kenosha, wisconsin, the National Guard has been deployed after peaceful protests turned violent once the curfew set in. The investigation into what happened continues. With me now is zach rodriguez, board supervisor for kenosha county. You want to be very clear that what were seeing during the day, these peaceful protests against what happened to this man are completely different from what were seeing at night. Explain. Yes, so thanks for having me. I want to be perfectly clear with that ive been on the ground during the day, during the protests, and when things get a little hairier or things start to turn for the worse, people are very quick to call it out. Theyre saying, this is not why were here, this is not going to affect the longterm lasting change that we need. You were on the scene after the shooting 15 minutes later, what did you see . I saw a lot of confusion amongst residents the department turned over the scene to the Kenosha Department we just lost you for a second. Can you repeat the last ten second and when i got there, we saw a loft commotion, confusion, and i witnessed the city of Police Department of kenosha turn over the scene to Kenosha Sheriffs Department to be in compliance with state law. The family is saying that hes now paralyzed from the waist down, its unclear if that paralysis is going to be permanent or if its temporary thing, from your experience with the Police Department in kenosha, reforms in response to past incidents, i dont believe they were with black men, but past incidents, whats the relationship between the police and the population there, is it a tense one . Or, what can crow tell us . I think as a whole, its not as tense as it is nationwide as we see whats happening nationwide given the tragic death of george floyd, tensions did rise again, tensions amongst the community and local law enforcements and i think this just highlights or resparks the flame of the tension that were seeing, not just here in ke in, kenosha but across the country. What could justify Police Shooting him seven times in the back when were told that his children are in the car where its happening and theyre screaming out, what could possibly justify that in your estimation . And thats a great question. When i first saw the video, my heart dropped. I think any decent person watching that video felt the same way. What we dont know is possibly he may be holding. The video isnt very clear and what was being exchanged. Hard to justify. I think the nation as a whole, especially here, were hoping that if this wasnt justified this officer is brought to justice. Youre asking for dash cam vid video. Zach rodriguez, thank you so much for joining us. Youre looking at pictures of protests in louisville, kentucky, as calls for justice for Breonna Taylor continue.
