Widespread dissatisfaction and anxiety among the american electorate. Nearly 40 of respondents said if their preferred candidate loses they cant be sure the election was fair. And when asked how they feel about the 2020 election, four of the top five responses conveyed alarm and angst. They use words like frightened, nervous, chaotic and train wreck. So how is President Trump responding to all of this . By going on a multitweet rant this morning suggesting all of cable news is now unfairly against him. Suggesting fox news is now promoting democrats and that his followers shouldnt watch anymore. Here is a quote, i dont want to win for myself. I only want to win for the people. The new fox news is letting millions of great people down. We have to start looking for a new news outlet. Fox isnt working for us anymore. So our big question today is how do 2020 democrats heading into the next debate harness this deep anxiety over the Trump Presidency . Joining me now msnbc National Political correspondent steve kornacki, Washington Post senior political reporter aaron blake, former democratic congresswoman Donna Edwards and former republican congressman and msnbc political contributor david jolly. So here is the big question, what do these numbers, steve, mean for President Trump . Yeah, those head to head numbers trump versus the potential democratic opponents for him in 2020, that is about the worst youve seen trump in a poll. Hes been losing in a lot of polls to democrats, but this is sort of a floor falling out for trump poll. Look at it from that context. We will see what other polls look like as this progress towards 2020, but right now in this quinnipiac one group to look at i think thats particularly interesting, noncollege white voters. This was a group weve talked a lot about since 2016. Donald trump won this group by nearly 40 points in the exit poll in 2016. One of the key reasons trump was able to win in these head to heads. Look, from a 40point Trump Victory in 2016, trump against sanders its 5, trump against biden its 6. Hes winning them, but 5, 6, 11, 13, 13. Nothing like you saw in the exit poll in 2016. Doesnt mean thats how this race is going to end up, but as sort of a starting point this is not what 2016 looked like. Aaron, you called this quinnipiac poll the worst for the president yet go on to write theres plenty of time and polls arent predictive, but for now it appears hes starting from behind. Incumbent president s dont generally start from that position. Whats going on here . Yeah, incumbent president s with this kind of economy i would add. The president s political standing is all the more, you know, embattled because of the position he should be in, which is that he should be a good bet for reelection based upon where the economy is. The finding that you spotlighted where its the first time in his presidency that more people think the economy is getting worse than getting better. Now, perhaps that could be a reflection of some of the more gloomy predictions from financial analysts, some of the Media Coverage around this issue, but the fact remains if this is an issue on which people are starting to perceive a downtu downturn, thats something that the president simply cannot afford at this point because the economy is far and away his best issue in basically every poll you see. Every other issue in this quinnipiac poll his Approval Rating is 38 or below on immigration, on trade, on all of these issues. So the moment that economy stops being there as his as his talking point in the 2020 election, thats when things start to look really bad for him. So, david, these polls that show him losing to these democrats, that show his main argument, economic strength, starting to dissipate, is that why hes tweeting all this other stuff, fox news, going after the mayor of san juan again, trashing the federal reserve, china, even bed bugs before noon today . Look, this is a president who is increasingly isolated, who is spiraling because his team is seeing these same poll numbers. Kellyanne conways pedigree is in polling, she is his counselor on these issues and she cannot simply put rosecolored glasses on these numbers. Theyre very bad. Chris, i think theres also a take away for the democratic field here and for democratic voters. Theres still a primary to be run and what we continue to see increasingly with these polls is that any of the Democratic Candidates can beat donald trump. Three months ago, six months ago we were having electability conversations, jill biden tried to make the argument on behalf of joe biden about his electability. Democrats, any one of your front runners can beat donald trump. Feel free to go in any ideological direction the party chooses because you match up very well against the president. The last thing i would say is this, the numbers that you mentioned that said people are dreading the 2020 election, that means there is a lane wide open for a happy warrior in this race. Lead with optimism. We know the president is going to do what he did today, which is to spew this venom, to tear us apart, be the democrat thats the happy warrior going into 2020, the opening is right there for you. Donna, the idea of exhaustion, that voters are feeling, that the chaos that President Trump thrives on his left them frightened. David ignatius writes in the Washington Post this, as trump era politics get noisier, a weary public seems to be tuning out. What are the political implications of this trend as we head toward the 2020 president ial election . Certainly turnout will be critical. Motivated voters will drive the outcome in a country thats turned off by politics, but who is the trump diffuser who can calm a country who has frazzled nerve from the daily trump barrage. That would seem, donna, a bit of what david is saying. That what maybe folks are really looking for is somebody who can calm down the noise, bring them back to a sense of i dont have to wake up every morning with a tightness in my chest. Well, i think its certainly true that among the front runners this is no longer really a question of electability. Any one of our democrats at the top tier can be elected president of the united states. And i think if you look down in the details in this poll, what it shows is that voters, in fact, having paying attention to the democratic primary race and theyre paying attention to the president. Theyre dissatisfied with him, theyre dissatisfied with the direction of the country and theyre increasingly dissatisfied with the economy. All of this, you know, spells real disaster up ahead for the president. I think for democrats, you know, focusing on their race, focusing on winning a primary and clearly any one of these democrats is going to be able to unite the Democratic Party against donald trump. I mean, those numbers really show that very plainly and so i think in this in these next debates that are coming up were going to actually look forward to seeing some of the distinctions in tone and personality and policy among these democrats, most of whom can be elected president of the united states. So bring us the news, steve, if you will, on the debate front. Break down what weve learned now. Yeah, so today is the deadline to qualify for candidates to qualify for the next democratic president ial debate which will be in midseptember. So look at it this way, remember the qualifying criteria here is you have to raise money from 130,000 individual donors, you have got to hit 2 in at least four polls. Right now there are ten candidates, you see them highlighted here, ten candidates who have met that criteria, hit those thresholds and are set to be in that september debate. The suspensipenss has been arou gabbert and tom steyer. They have reached the donor threshold but steyer has three polls where hes at 2 . Gabbert two polls the 2 number. She needs two more. This morning two more polls came out. If gabbert could get 2 in one she would be in, if steyer kolgt one more he would be in. The u. S. A. Suffolk poll, these are all the candidates 2 and above, you dont see gabbert and you dont see steyer. That means gabbert is out of septembers debate by not making that one and quinnipiac came out, steyer really needed to hit 2 there, you see, again, these are all the candidates 2 and above, steyer didnt make this one, either. That means, chris, the clock is ticking. After 2 00 less than ten hours to go until midnight. Unless there is a surprise mystery poll that completely unannounced emerges in the next ten hours or so, and has steyer at 2 , id say its going to be ten candidates on that debate stage in september. It means its going to be a onenight debate, not a twonight split candidate event. They are all going to be on one stage on that one night. For those who didnt make it not being on that stage means you are not getting your name out there to millions of people, no chance to get new donors, no chance to get new supporters, but former congressman john delaney and governor Steve Bullock both were on msnbc today and they both said that theyre staying in the race. We think the race is just getting started. The first votes wont be cast for six months, we are going to keep campaigning hard and getting our message out there. I mean, were still five and a half months from voters actually expressing a preference and thats when iowans first go. You go back to when john kerry was running, 31 days out he was at 4 points, al sharpton was beating him. I think there is a long way to go along this. So, david, do they have a point or frankly speaking are they maybe a little bit delusional . Do they have any chance at the nomination if they dont qualify for the debates . Well, we hope our next president is somebody who has a very optimistic soul and spirit and i think thats what were seeing from bullock and delaney. Here is what i would say, chris, and there is a point in what theyve said. If you are not on this stage, if you are trailing in national polls, training in money, youve got one tool in your tool kit and that is to organize in a state that you think you could possibly pull off some type of jut set or at least a newsworthy showing. So organize in iowa, organize in new hampshire, organize in nevada or south carolina, one of those. Thats really all youve got left at this point. In terms of those who also are now in that group, i think somewhat of a surprise at least notable is senator Kirsten Gillibrand from the state of new york who has failed to really find any footing in this race, that is as newsworthy or more so than the delaneys and bullocks and others. Two ways to look, Donna Edwards, at something you said earlier which any of these candidates can beat donald trump in a head to head matchup and the polls certainly says that at least five of them can, but if youre joe biden does it undercut your electability argument . Does it change the race in any way since essentially bragging rights are going to a whole bunch of them . Well, i think that joe biden has actually started to realize that in addition to making an electability argument he also has to make an argument on policy and thats why you see him, you know, sort of rolling out a discussion around health care, he did some ads focusing on Health Care Reform and connecting that to himself personally. But ive always believed that this race is about head and its about heart. Voters are going to have to make a decision about somebody who can beat donald trump, electable, but also somebody who shares their values, concerns and priorities. Donna edwards, david jolly, steve kornacki, aaron blake thanks to all of you. We have breaking news now, dorian has been upgraded to a category 1 hurricane and it is churning toward puerto rico. Were building the wall, a lot of it is the chant now should be finish the wall as opposed to build the wall because were building a lot of wall. Theres some stunning new reporting out today about just how far President Trump may be willing to go to get that border wall built. Multiple sources tell the Washington Post that means directing his aides to fast track billions of dollars worth of construction contracts, aggressively seize private land and disregard environmental rules. He also has told worried subordinates that he will pardon them of any potential wrongdoing should they have to break laws to get the barriers built quickly. Trump has repeatedly promised to complete 500 miles of fencing by the time voters go to the polls in november of 2020, but with just 14 months remaining before the election he isnt even close to keeping his promise. As the post points out, the u. S. Army corps of engineers has completed just about 60 miles of replacement barrier during the first two and a half years of trumps presidency. All of it in areas that previously had border infrastructure. Joining me daily beast politics reporter and msnbc contributor Betsy Woodruff and political White House Reporter nancy cook. Good to see both of you. Betsy, pardons for anyone who breaks the law to make his border wall happen. Does this underscore just how much pressure the president is feeling to if you will till some of these Campaign Promises if the economy in particular isnt looking so freight . Without question. And some of that pressure comes from within his own administration. Immigration hawks and hardliners will privately have privately raised frustrations about the fact that there hasnt been any significant construction of fencing on parts of the border where no fence existed previously. Theres been enough repairs and expansions on parts where there were fencing that the president has been able to use photo ops and sort of pose in front of fencing and suggest that hes keeping his promises, but the reality is the president himself seems to acknowledge and as the hawks in his administration acknowledge as well, is that he has yet to deliver on the first major promise that he made years ago now when he rode down the escalator at trump tower and, you know, set off his president ial campaign. Nancy, as the post notes trump conceded last year in an immigration meeting with lawmakers that a wall or barrier is not the most effective mechanism to curb illegal immigration, recognizing it would accomplish less than a major expansion of u. S. Enforcement powers and deportation authority. But he told lawmakers that his supporters want a wall and that he has to deliver it. Is there any sense at all that that pressure that he is putting on people within the administration is going to abate . No, not at all. And i think that weve seen what has happened at the department of Homeland Security and just the huge purge of leadership there and the turnover that weve seen there as real evidence of the type of pressure that not just the president is putting on the administration to fulfill these types of promises, but that also other Senior Administration officials like Steven Miller are putting on it. They view the wall as a huge symbol of a Campaign Promise that the president needs to fulfill. They view it as a key promise to his base. Whats interesting to me is that even in conversations with, you know, very, you know, hard right immigration hawks the things that they tell me that are actually needed are more surveillance or more judges to process immigration claims or stricter asylum rules. So theres actually all of these wonky technical things that would probably go further in the president s goal of stopping illegal immigration, but the wall is such a potent symbol and its such a row tent symbol for the president that he sees his construction as key to his reelection. The president will need to seize land from ranchers from texas to florida, real people who will be affected by this. One official is quoted as saying they dont care how much money is spent, whether landowners rights are violated, whether the environment is damaged, the law, the regs or even prudent business practices. Is there not irony in this that a republican president is sort of just saying, Eminent Domain, i will do whatever i want . Its certainly a dramatic break from the historic stance of the Republican Party when it comes to Eminent Domain, going back to the 2016 primary you would hear conservative opinion leaders and activists specifically talk about the Eminent Domain issue as sort of the crystallization of overreach of the federal government and the preeminence of private Property Rights as a cornerstone of a functioning economy is something that people on the right have emphasized and highlighted for decades and decades and decades. So for trump himself to say that those that those interests are secondary to him being able to keep his Campaign Promise is one of a host of examples of him just totally jettisoning boom, it happens. In 2007 according to a Research Done by the san diego tribune, the u. S. Department of Homeland Security filed more than 360 Eminent Domain lawsuits against americans who owned land along the mexico border from texas to california. Ten years later some of those lawsuits are still going on. I mean, are they just going to go in and Start Building or at the very least can the president say, well, thats the democrats, tying this up in court, im trying to do what i said i would do . Well, i think that what has happened is the president as weve seen time and time again, you know, loves campaigning, but does not love governing and sort of the process and the details of it. Part of building a wall involves very complicated things like seizing federal land through Eminent Domain main, potentially being stopped by the court system, awarding federal contracts for people to build the wall, you have to buy steel for the wall. You know, this is really a whole process, you have to hire people to build the wall. Its not something you can snap your fingers and do overnight. I think that the president has shown that he is constantly frustrated by the constraints of governing. Such interesting conversations. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. Com now to President Trumps Campaign Promise to drain the swamp and yet more new revelations contradicting that notion. First, the Washington Post reporting that attorney general bill barr has booked trumps d. C. Hotel for a 200person private Holiday Party in december. The price tag for the buffet and a fourhour open bar a cool 30 grand. News of barrs plan to splurge on trumps property comes on the heels of the president himself suggesting that the best place to hold the next g7 is at his property in doral, florida. That would pretty much guarantee a sellout and pre publicity for a resort whose revenues have been declining. The president president has said he doesnt care about his companies or the profits they do or dont return. What reassurances, if any, can you give the American People that you are not looking to profit off the presidency . From my standpoint, im not going to make any money in my opinion im not going to make any money. I dont want to make money. I dont care about making money. If i wanted to make money i wouldnt worry about 3 billion to 5 billion but thats i mean, at some point im going to detail that and well show, but i think its just a great place to be. But you wouldnt know that by the amount of time the president has spent promoting and visiting the properties according to an analysis by the Washington Post. Trump has averaged two weekly visits to Trump Organization properties and has mentioned the names of four of those properties, bedminster, maralago, turnberry and doral at least 70 times in white house speeches, interviews and tweets, tweets that go out to his 63 million plus followers. Joining me is Washington Post reporter Jonathan Oconnell and Los Angeles TimesWhite House Reporter eli stokles. Jonathan, really fascinating report on the bar story and the first thing that comes to mind when you see the headline is, theres a lot of hotels and a lot of ball rooms and a lot of places to hold parties in washington, d. C. That might not raise questions of ethics. So what can you tell us about why this hotel now . Sure. Well, this is a party that barr holds every year, its sort of a mix of a Holiday Party and, you know, sort of irish music and a representative for the attorney general said that he preferred the willard or the may flower hotels, but those were booked, and that trump was the one, you know, that had space for him. Obviously there are a lot of Luxury Hotels in washington now where obviously a far away out from december when the president is, so its hard to believe that he would not have had any other options to pick for his party and he chose one that is obviously drawing a lot of attention. And the attorney general, jonathan, is he not the official who would be in charge of a multitude of cases questioning whether or not the president has violated the emoluments clause . Absolutely. Obviously attorney general barr is the nations top Law Enforcement official and in this current environment where the president has retained ownership of his business effectively, his attorneys, department of justice attorneys are the ones in court defending the president s business against allegations that they are doing business with foreign governments illegally or violating the constitution. So we have, you know, barr is doing this president a solid in two cases here, his attorneys are representing the president in these cases and now hes booking hes booked a very large event at the president s hotel. He is the ag, the top Law Enforcement official. Does he decide whats ethical and whats not . Is there somebody who had to look at this and who would that be . Every agency has ethics officials who review various actions and a representative for mr. Barr said that this had been reviewed by department of justice ethics officials and to be honest no one has asserted that he has broken a rule here. He is paying for this event with his own money, it is not a department of justice official event, it is not required there is no required attendance by federal officials. So its really more of a you know, an appearance thing. Do people care how this looks . Do they think will they question whether the attorney general is independent enough from the president to do higs job or is this fine . Is this something that clubby Washington People can do for each other . This follows the president suggesting that he might host the g7 at his resort in doral, florida, in fact, his white house twitter account said that outright. You wrote if a summit were to take place at one of trumps private hotels that means the president could profit personally from the global leaders. Florida senator marco rubio says hes all for it. Thats right down the street from not far from where i live, its in florida, i think its a great idea. Does it cause any concern . Yeah, a lot of concern, traffic, its right around the super bowl potentially. Any concerns, though, about the president pitching his own, that he would make a profit theoretically . I dont know. My sense is that those events probably end up costing more than they make you. Youre not talking about a tourist event. Its a lot of security costs locally and a lot of traffic. Id love to have miami be featured internationally, its a great place. Eli, is deciding where this happens, a unilateral decision that the president makes, or could somebody challenge it . You know, i dont know if other g7 leaders would say were not going to go to maralago. I can tell you i was in the room at the g7 on monday when trump floated this idea, he was sitting next to Angela Merkel and she had a blank look on her face. Trump dropped that its probably going to be in miami and give an extended infomercial about doral and all of its benefits. Basically said they were done looking at other places and there was nowhere else in the entire country that could be as well suited for a g7 as doral. One of the reasons the president put out there was the fact that its next to the airport and its a big airport that takes planes from everywhere. So hes basically in his mind made this decision. We already went over in the segment that he knows that his attorney general not going to question this and so, you know, unless somebody steps up to stop him it seems like this is the plan and its going ahead. It doesnt seem that theyre concerned when you look at sort of Campaign Promises and the Campaign Promise of draining the swamp. Obviously this is a prime example of where the democrats could use it against him, but im guessing certainly he doesnt and im not sure whether anybody on his Campaign Staff thinks that this isnt such a great idea. I can recall back in 2016 when the president would be in the rally stage and he would almost break the fourth wall and talk to the crowd about that line. Drain the swamp and say gave it to me, but, boy, it sure got a lot of definitional in some ways, the president s message, but there has been no swa over two and a half years now that the president s supporters are certainly not going to hold had im to account for any failure to follow through on that promise and, you know, people who are bothered by this theyve probably been not in the president s camp for some time. A lot of us laughed when he said i could be on fifth avenue and shoot somebody and his followers would still be with him. We dont laugh so much about that anymore. He definitely has his most ardent followers. Eli and jonathan, great reporting on that story. Thanks to both of you, i appreciate it. This is already a strong storm and its getting stronger, winds up to 75 Miles Per Hour. Of course, the island still hasnt fully recovered from Hurricane Marias devastation two years ago. Killing thousands and leaving millions without food, water or shelter. You will remember that in the aftermath of maria President Trump famously tossed rolls of paper towels to residents and though he now claims that Congress Approved 92 billion in aid, it was, in fact, less than half of that. Still hes tweeting again today claiming that he is, quote, the best inning thats ever happened to puerto rico. Just as nbc broke the story today that, in fact, the administration plans to shift 271 million from Femas Disaster Relief Fund to their immigration efforts at the southern border. Joining me msnbc meteorologist Michelle Grossman, Mariana Atencio in puerto rico and Washington Post reporter arialese hernandez. Michelle, lets start with what were expecting in the next 24 hours or so. Weve seen drastic changes even from when we talked early this morning, now a category 1 storm. This is what it looks like on enhanced satellite, its a little storm but its packing a punch. We are tracking the 75 mile per hour winds, no you a category 1 storm, we are getting reports of Hurricane Force winds in st. Thomas, watches and warnings have been posted. We have a Tropical Storm warning in puerto rico. We could see hurricane conditions by the day and tomorrow north of the bahamas. Lets take a look at the track of this storm. We only see it strengthening. It jogged to the north last night, that means its staying over the open waters of the atlantic, thats all it needs, that warm fuel from the waters to really give it its energy. So right now a category 1 storm over the u. S. Virgin islands, here we go with this track, by tomorrow category 2 storm, excuse me, friday into saturday a category 2 storm, were expecting winds right around 105 Miles Per Hour and this is what were really looking at for the holiday weekend, category 3 storm potentially hitting the east coast of florida, even into southern parts of georgia. We will watch the track closely over the next several days. What are you hearing from residents as they prepare for this storm . Reporter chris, the storm caught a lot of people offguard on the eastern part of the island because, as you know, the storms track changed overnight and a lot of people making last minute preparations as this now category 1 hurricane heads to cities like where i am standing now. There was a lot of business here that was impacted by Hurricane Maria, in fact, Hurricane Maria came in through here and this area and i found a family making last minute preparations here at the marina. I have young henry with me today. Can you tell our chris jansing, hen henry, how you and your family are preparing for this storm. We were just tidying up our boat right now, we were getting ready for this storm and last night we were buying food and stuff, just to get ready. We hope that the storm is just like a storm, Tropical Storm, we hope its not a hurricane and i hope that people that are in puerto rico, i hope theyre good and theyre safe. So i know you didnt experience Hurricane Maria here on the island, but your dad did, henry, i have to ask you we know that President Trump has been tweeting about puerto rico. What are your thoughts on that . [ speaking spanish ] short and sweet, henry here said, chris, that it is apparent that President Trump doesnt have much love for the people of puerto rico. Im going to let you guys go because i know you have to head home for the storm. Thank you so much for joining us today. Youre welcome. Thank you both. Chris, i spoke to the Power Authority here on the island, they tell me that they are much more prepared than they were before Hurricane Maria hit puerto rico. They have 422 brigades, teams of three and four people set up in strategic points on the island ready to deal with any power issues in the aftermath of the storm that will make landfall in the coming hours here in the eastern tip of the island. Chris. Boy, i cant imagine anybody seeing the path of this storm and thinking youve got to be kidding me, not again. Thank you for bringing that father and son to us because it really does bring it home so powerfully. Look, its been two years since Hurricane Maria, youve traveled there numerous times since then. Give me your assessment, people youre talking to, how prepared really is this island for another major storm and how much have they recovered from the last one . So i think the consensus among sources that i have, folks ive been talking to on the island is that things are better, but puerto rico continues to be very vulnerable and susceptible to any kind of, you know, excess rain, flooding, landslides that could sort of dislodge the tenuous, you know, improvements that have been made on the island, i think people were indeed as your correspondent said were surprised that this sort of shifted. They had moved resources down to the southern part of the island and now theyre sort of having to shift back to the east. Thats worrisome for a lot of people because in some ways its eerily similar to where Hurricane Maria came in. The president continues to attack the island, im sure youve seen his twitter feed. Hes also touting things he says hes done. Just a short time ago he wrote puerto rico is one of the most corrupt places on earth. Their political system is broken and their politicians are either incompetent or corrupt. Congress approved billions of dollars last time, more than anyplace else has ever gotten and it has sent to crooked polls. No good. By the way, im the best thing thats ever happened to puerto rico. Moments ago joe biden addressed those tweets about puerto rico in south carolina. Take a listen. Its bizarre. The comment is bizarre. Hes the best thing that happened to puerto rico . I cant think of a president in my memory who has ever treated puerto rico the way this by the president has treated puerto rico. I think you heard henry, the dad who was talking to Mariana Atencio said there is clearly no love lost with the president of the united states. Are they baffled down there by the things that have happened, by the things the president has said ever since and actually predating that infamous paper towel throwing incident . Well, i dont think for the majority of Puerto Ricans that ive spoken to have had the privilege to of talking over these past two years of reporting i dont think anyone expects anything different in terms of the president s rhetoric towards puerto rico. I think what people will most sort of focused on remember that we are only about maybe less or a little more than a month removed from the governor residing over, you know, a scandal, political scandal involving group chats and allegations of corruptions members of his cabinet having been, you know, arrested on public corruption charges. So i think the people of puerto rico have, you know, to some degree might agree with the president not with his sentiment, but, you know, that they also see a government that, you know, has failed them in the past and are going to be watching this governor very closely and her government in the way that they respond to this particular hurricane. Yeah, and they should read your reporting about it because it really is very instructive. Arelis, thank you, mariana to you as well and Michelle Grossman in the weather center. For the First Time Since his resignation former defense secretary jim mattis is talking and its a public rebuke of the president s strategy at home and abroad. In a wall street journal excerpt from his forthcoming book mattis describes his time within the trump orbit saying i did as well as i could for as long as i could. When my concrete solutions and strategic advice no longer resonated, it was time to resign. The decorated marine general also gave a thinly veiled warning to the president saying, quote, a polepicists role is not sufficient for a leader. Joining me is retired four star general and nbc news political analyst barry mccaffrey. Ive been thinking a lot about what he said which is i did as well as i could for as long as i could. Its not like he is somebody who has shied away from difficult things. Before becoming defense secretary he was the respected head of centcom, served in the persian gulf war, iraq war, led the First Marine Division during the early stages of the iraq war overseeing the advance in marine corps history. So i thought to myself when i read that quote, did trump just prove harder than . What did you make of reading this, general . Well, you know, chris, mattis is probably the most respected military officer since world war ii, probably with the exception of general colin powell. Hes enormously respected. Hes a very tough guy. I think essentially what brought him to resign was not just the tribalism he talks about, the internal division, the chaos internally in a country, but the white house walking away from our global alliances. A huge part of whats kept us secure since world war ii. So i think that was the unacceptable piece. He lost the confidence of the president who is now impulsive, erratic, and totally in charge. And he went back to stanford university. So its worth reminding people i think, general, that trump was so unhappy with mattis resignation later that he showed him the door two months before the resignation was supposed to take effect. So, look, hes also someone who chooses his words carefully. He is someone who has shown time and time again how patriotic he is. What will you be looking for in the book in terms of his experience within this white house . Well, you know, mattis is essentially apolitical. Mostly hes a senior military guy, has been very careful to never declare for one party or another. They are sort of imbeaued with that constitutional requirement. So, its going to be interesting to see to me to what extent he describes the obvious almost complete dysfunction of the white house for National Security affairs. The syrian effort went over a weekend essentially President Trump in conversation with ergodan with turkey immediately decided to withdraw all of our forces leaving the allies who have done the fighting for us at risk. Its the impulsive nature of defense planning and strategic guidance of trump. Will he talk about that bluntly in his book . Personally i think he owes it to us, and itll be helpful analysis to where we got to go in the future. To your point about most military leaders, mattis himself says hes not about the politics of washington. But clearly his opinions do matter. They are respected on both sides of the aisle. I wonder if you think this is it for him. Is he gone from any kind of Public Service now . Well, who knows. I think basically if you ask jim mattis to do something at the service of the country, hes do it. If you ask him to be an ambassador to a small developing country, hed probably take on the assignment. But i dont think he has political ambitions at all. I think his general focus is on the security of the American People. He spent his entire life wearing the uniform of a u. S. Marine, got a lot of combat time, a lot of leadership experience. He understands a National Government and how it works. He has tremendous capability. But i think now what were going to see out of jim mattis is a warning for the future. A reminder about what used to qualify as a bonified president ial controversy. Five years ago today the Brady Press Briefing room at the white house, in walks president barack obama to address important world issues including his isis strategy. But the big story that day wasnt his strategy. It was his suit. More specifically, his tan suit. The tan suit has appeared in the west wing before. President bill clinton wore one as president. Before him, there was george h. W. Bush wearing one behind the podium. Yet, it was president obama who drew critics, especially from republicans. Chief among them, new york congressman peter king who called the tan suit inexcusable. Quote, if you were the head of isis, if you were baghdadi, if you were anyone in isis, would you come away from yesterday afraid of the united states, or would you think heres a person whos going to go out and do a few fundraisers over the labor day weekend. King not alone. Time magazine equated it to seeing a performer out of costume. Gq called it terrible. Esquire, a monstrosity. And with that tan suit trending everywhere, local news stations hit the streets. What do northeast ohioans think . If he wants to wear a tan suit, he can wear a tan suit. Why are we so concerned about a color of a suit . He didnt have on jeans, tennis shoes and a tank top. Hail to the top, it still inspires memes to this day. Quote, remember when the gop said your tan see ut was unpresident ial . But it was the Obama Administration that ultimately had the last laugh. Months after tan suit began, the president tweeted this, president obama suiting up for the big sweech. Hashtag, yes, we tan. But what a difference five years makes. Five years later, tan suit has taken on a different meeting. On social media just about every news item about potential conflicts of interest within the Trump Administration and the president s flouting of norms is met with some variant of remember when obama wore a tan suit . I do. That wraps up things this hour. Ali velshi in his dark suit. I have been on the record of saying i not only like that suit, i have one like it. I dont know what everybody got all can you wear it tomorrow . I am tempted to. I like the tan suit. I dont know what the problem. But thank you for reminding us about it. Have a good afternoon, chris. Thank you. It is wednesday, august the 28th. Dorian becomes a hurricane near st. Thomas and the u. S. Virgin islands.
