Financier and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Right now Officials Say the signs point to suicide bullet the medical examiner also says more time is needed before an official cause can be determined. And if that determination is officially suicide how was the most high profile prisoner in america able to do it in a jail thats been called the guantanamo of new york . Of course epstein faced sex trafficking charges and hundreds of documents released just before his death named some powerful and wealthy people. Today attorney general william barr made it clear the investigation into epsteins alleged crimes are far from over. We will get to bottom of what happened and there will be accountability. But let me assure you that this case will continue on against anyone who is complicit with epstein. Any coconspirators should not rest easy. The victims deserve justice, and they will get it. In fact the wall street journal suggests with epstein gone the pressure is already onto prosecute any associates who might have helped him recruit gung girls. And the New York Times reports the focus might turn to epsteins murky financial history. Where did his great wealth come from . But first the circumstances are being investigated by both the fbi and the department of justice. The internet was flooded with conspiracy theories and then President Trump threw a match on an already smoldering fire. Retweeting toxic and baseless conspiracy theories that implicate the clintons in epsteins death. So the big question today is following his death, what are the next steps for the epstein investigation. Joining me now tom winter, former federal prosecutor doug berns, and the clock is ticking. When can we expect to learn the circumstances of epsteins death. Its going to take some time. I dont expect were going to hear anything over the next few days as far as this is going to go. Basically the chief medical examiner here in new york have asked that her folks work with law enforcement. They may have some questions and things they found about epsteins past either medically or some of the things they found on his body during the course of his autopsy. They may go back to the fbi and federal investigators to say hey can we find out more about this or that as a hypothetical. In addition the fbis investigation may help inform the medical examiners investigation in her autopsy. So thats whats going to be going on. Theres no rush to do this. Were scrutinizing this already. This is going to be scrutinized for the next 15, 20 years, this case, this death has become a life of its own. The things epstein either pleaded guilty to or accused of doing are horrific so i think right now they want to take their time and get this done. I would not be surprised if it takes several more days or weeks for us to get a conclusion from the medical examiner. Youve reported correction officers did not follow protocol in the moments leading up to epsteins death. What did you find out . Right, were told that in normal circumstances guards and Corrections Officers should have been checking on epstein about every 30 minutes. And for several hours before his body was found that wasnt done is the investigators current understanding of the situation. Theres a lot more we need to know. Theres a lot more evidence that needs to be reviewed specifically the videotapes. But, you know, i do think its an alarming signal has to how this might have gone wrong for the Justice Department and bureau of prisons youve already got the attorney general blasting the bureau of prisons over the handling of something that happened just a couple of days ago. He had been on suicide watch, which would have meant he was watched 24 7. That was lifted which already a lot of people who know the system, who have been in the system as lawyers or people who have worked in jails in particular have said how did that happen. Right. And thats obviously a big part of this investigation. I think one of the things to know about suicide watch is its designed to prevent an immediate risk of suicide. Its not really designed to prevent what the sort of more general atmospheric risk. So theres going to be a lot of questions why exactly was the decision made to pull him off suicide watch. But, you know, a lot of people dont want to be on suicide watch. Its a weird dynamic that happens inside prisons where suicide watch itself is an uncomfortable and unpleasant thing. And so even people who might want to hurt themselves will want to get off that suicide watch as quickly as they can. All of this raises questions which a. G. Barr raised which is who might be a target in this investigation. Heres what senator ben sass wrote. The department of justice failed and today Jeffrey Epsteins coconspirators think they might have gotten one last sweetheart deal. Every Single Person from your main justice headquarter staff all the way to the night shift jailer knew he was a suicide risk and his dark secrets couldnt be allowed to die with him. Obviously heads must roll. This was not a run of the mill jail, a run of the mill defendant, a run of the mill case. This is a facility that has held el chapo, gadi, madof. And you have have a guy whos been in the headlines now for literally weeks. This should have been exactly the place for somebody like epstein, right . Ive been in the building many, many times over the last three decades. Ive been in the special housing unit and youre right, this a really shocking development. I always try to keep it close to the vest and working off my colleagues point, were going to need to figure out ought a lot of things exactly what happened, whats the autopsy result, exactly what photos and Surveillance Video we can look at. Interview of witnesses obviously critically important and all of thats going to have to be done. Back to the legal point, though, very important sort of clarification to the extent anyone thinks that, oh, his death that lets coconspirators off the hook, thats not accurate legally at all on any level. The case against the conspirators can be the same exact case and indeed ill put an even finer point on the pencil in which its unlikely to hear from the defendant in the case in most instances, ie, epstein. They may not actually but if they want to go forward with the case against the conspirators its the same witnesses which are the victims. One of the things that was pointed out in a statement about the autopsy was that now Michael Baten has come in and brought in by Jeffrey Epsteins his people, his team, however you want to describe it. Ive been in the courtroom with michael on many occasions before. He did the jfk assassination. He did bill specter, o. J. Simpson, recently hernandez. What does it tell you . I think, look, the family has the right to have somebody thats there. I dont think the Financial Resources are a challenge and im not implying that the doctor charged some outrageous amount for this, but Financial Resources are not a problem in this instance for the estate of Jeffrey Epstein. I think when we look at this and baten being there, look, they want to have somebody there whos perceived as an absolute expert in this field. I know not everybody would agree with that in the legal field but he is who he is. Is he an insurance policy in the case of a wrongful death lawsuit . Possibly. No, i dont think so. Last night they turned around theyre going to release autopsy results tonight, and they go we need more information to do that. I thought that was unusual and interesting. Thank you so much. And all these questions, the hows and the whys, the mysterious nature of epsteins death if you want to call it that combined with the rumors of powerful figures caught up in his alleged crimes sense conspiracy theorists into overdrive. Soon clintons was a trending topic and it was the third highest trending topic when President Trump added fuel to the fire. Retweeting uned comments tying epsteins death to the clinton family. Joining me now msnbc contributor and former spokesman for Hillary Clinton. President trump has long trafficked in conspiracy theories. Just to name a few, birtherism. He tried to tie ted cruzs death to the jfk assassination, Global Warming a chinese hoax. This is nothing new for President Trump, but is it just politics or does he believe his political rivals might have had a hand in killing Jeffrey Epstein . Its very hard to say but as you said the president has long trafficked in conspiracy theories. He also said the Late Supreme CourtJustice Antony sculeeia might have been murdered. You have the president over and again toy wg the case of conspiracy theories. And i think that might in his mind help him politically because when i go to rallies for the president or when i talk to supporters for the president they are still laser focused on Hillary Clinton. And at times when you listen to the president talk at hiseralies its almost like were back in 2016 where were still talking about Hillary Clinton and people are still shouting lock her up. So in some ways this could be about ginning up his base or the president throwing it out there and his supporters liking the idea hes engaging with the conversation people are having around their dinner table which is how this could have happened. Were you at all surprised the president retweeted this unfounded fringe Conspiracy Theory to his 63 million followers . Not in the least. I mean, this was not the first time. Hes been doing this. Dont forget birtherism was a Conspiracy Theory and he was responsible for its spreading and that goes back eight years. It was a couple of weeks ago when they had whatever they called it their jamboree for absolutely fringe people. Yeah, i do believe he thinks it and believes it in part in his case conspiracy theories are a better alternative not necessarily with epstein, but of course youd want to call russia and what happened with comey a Conspiracy Theory because the alternative is the truth which is that he was involved in something he shouldnt have been involved in. So Kellyanne Conway was asked on fox news by the way about the retweet and heres what she said. The retweet it was clear what he was trying to say, wasnt it . I think the president just wants everything to be investigated. And, you know, trying to connect the president to this monster from years ago where theyre seen dancing in a video versus other people who were actively i suppose flying around with this monster on his island which was known as pedophilia island, perhaps theres a Public Interest in knowing more about that. She says the president wants this investigated, but i suppose you could make an argument that in any other administration there might be calls for the attorney general to lose his job over this. I mean, one the response again does not answer the question. She was not answering the question but she was making it clear that Jeffrey Epstein is seen as a monster, but she also wasnt talking about the fact the president had a long close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. He has yet to ever say why the two had a falling out. Hes never explained why they were having a private party with some two dozen women, just him and jeffrey estein. And when he was asked about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein on the lawn of the white house at one point he said at least i wasnt on the island, there were other people on the island. So it really was the president saying i was close to him, but you should look at these other people who have a more convoluted relationship with him. I think we have the white house trying to say the president is not trafficking in a Conspiracy Theory when obviously he is. And of course the attorney general was very clear today. He said he was worried about the sort of situation around Jeffrey Epsteins death and wants to have an investigation. It seems as though the fbi and doj are going to be doing just that. But this wasnt a president calling for an investigation but said this was a president retweeting a consheers theory. And as you said he launched his political career on a Conspiracy Theory which was president obama wasnt born in this country. So hes seen conspiracy theories help him over and over again. And this time in his mind it doesnt look like its going to be any different. I was going to say in the New York Times charley worosol writes thoughtfully how twitter has fueled these cons conspiracies. So as someone who worked inside the campaign who understands what its like to be on the receiving end of this, how can it be stopped . Can it be stopped . No, and not only have i been part of it, ive been simultaneously accused of being one of their hitmen and if i dont watch my step the clintons will kill me. These people have been out of their mind. The big differences there are still a fair innumber of people who believe there were a number of people more on the grassy knoll. The problem with that is maybe you have a greatuncle who Still Believes it and you laugh him off, but someone didnt take their rifle Walking Around washington, d. C. Looking for who they believed were the other gunmen who killed kennedy. Now we have have people acting on things. So look at what happened with socalled pizzagate. You had this crazy, crazy Conspiracy Theory that the democrats are in charge of some huge sex trafficking ring and it was operated out of a pizza store. Now, this guy came to d. C. To shootup a pizza store where there were kids. This is where you can do something about it, which is that a normal human being like donald trump would not take advantage of these things. He would not have people at his rallies holding up signs. He would have have people behind his desk smiling so that other people can think its legitimate. Whether he needs them or not it really doesnt matter. When ive said no, there is a person that can do more about it and its donald trump. The problem is you now have half of the media in the form of the right wing fox et cetera who are not presenting these things as theories, presenting them as fact. Imagine if that had happened in 1963 when people were saying, you know, you had half the media just stating as fact that kennedy was assassinated by some deep state blah, blah, blah lbj defense contractor youd have a lot more people believing it. And still to come we are live in mississippi just days after those massive i. C. E. Raids. The community was shaken. They fear going about their normal lives. Plus the return of the joe biden gaff. But it does it really matter to voters particularly in a potential head to head match up with donald trump. In the aftermath of the Mass Shootings in dayton, ohio, and el paso, texas, new evidence that the debate over the guns is now central to the 2020 campaign. Over the weekend 16 candidates taking part in one form in iowa. A powerful sign that the path of the nomination must include a plan to End Gun Violence and candidates werent mincing words. Did donald trump cause those folks to be killed . Well, no, of course he didnt pull the trigger. But hes certainly been tweeting out the ammunition. Harris was not alone in drawing a line between the president s rhetoric and the rise in violence tied to white nationalism. And we also saw candidate andrew yang moved to tears after meeting a mom whose 4yearold daughter was killed by a stray bullet. I have a 6 and 3yearold boy, so just imagining i was imagining it was one of them that got shot and the other saw it. Im so sorry. A lot of parents can relate to that. Also at the forum was frontrunner joe biden who on the same day released an oped in the New York Times promise sing to ban assault weapons if elected president. Quote, if we cannot rise to meet this moment it wont just be a political failure, it will mean a moral one. It will mean we accept the next immoral tragedy. From the inside of Congress Former spokesman to House Speaker john boehner, michael steel, and former Senate Leadership aide joel paine. Is this a moment something has fundamentally changed in the public psyche to the extent its going to put the pressure on congress to do something . It absolutely should be a moment. Should be or would be . Should be and time will tell if it will be. Democrats and the progressives and the left, we won the culture war on guns, right . I mean theres kind of no doubt about it. Its a 90 ish issue in terms of background checks. Its a 60 issue in terms of banning assault weapons. So like the results are in here. What has not happened are democrats turning this into the a voting issue. You saw some powerful appeals you just showed there this weekend from yang and harris and others. Joe biden talking stridently about banning assault weapons. Are democrats actually going to use this as a hammer to punish republicans, not just try to whip up Democratic Energy but to actually punish republicans who affectfively stop any attempts to reign in gun control. I think thats the Tipping Point we need to see. If you look at those polls clearly democrats have public sentiment on their side but is this something going to move Mitch Mcconnell at all . He has given no indication he feels any sense of urgency on this. Thats why im saying its the democrats responsibility fch if youre amy mcgraph you need to move Mitch Mcconnell, you need to organize around this issue. The fact pat toomey has not necessarily been a part of this solution on gun control, you need to penallize him for that. Thats where democrats i think have not taken advantage of this. This is a moment unlike any other because, again, i think with the culture war guns has been won by progressive and i think democrats have to use that amer to actually execute a plan to act on gun control now that theyve got that public support behind them. Its between rural state republicans in many cases and big state republicans, senators like john bu raso of wyoming versus say rick scott or pat toomey of pennsylvania who have had a little more indication that they might be able to support some things. But even with that does nothing get done unless donald trump picks up the phone, calls Mitch Mcconnell and says okay were going to do this yes, what is required here is prejudice leadership. Republicans hoping to represent suburban districts in states with large suburban areas in the future understand that sensible limited effective gun safety changes are necessary to win those votes, but its going to take discipline and consistency from the president of the United States. Hes going to have to outline those changes he will support, perhaps expanded background checks, perhaps limitations on large magazines. Hes going to have to say those things publicly and stick with it in the face of blow back from the right wing media, from the rush limbaughs of the world, from the nra. And i think its possible and electorally smart in order to get republicans on capitol hill to move. Guys, we have some breaking news. I understand theres new information on the shooting in dayton, ohio. Right, new charges against a friend of conor betts, the man who carried out the mass shooting. On friday they arrested a 24yearold from cettering, a suburb of dayton named ethan collie. Now they dont accuse him of anything of knowing anything about the shooting, but heres what they say, that he has admitted that he bought four bets, some of the items that betts used in the shooting attack including body armor, part of the ar15 weapon, a part not federally regulated and also the 100 round magazine that Authorities Say was youd in the shooting. The Dayton Police had said betts had two of them. The u. S. Attorney and fbi say today collie had bought the one used in the shooting. Thats the picture Dayton Police had put out. But in any event they say he had no indication that he knew betts would conduct this attack, that he did not intentionally participate in anything to do with the shooting, but what they say is that earlier this year collie bought body armor, part of the weapon, the magazine and told the federal bureau of investigation and atf agents who talked to him that he did it because collie asked him to keep it in collies apartment so betts could hide it. And betts came to the house, the two of them put the item together, put the rifle together and kept it it there. And then they say about 6 to 8 weeks go betts came back, retrieved the weapon and got the body armor and magazine. And they also say these two men were friends. Collie said he told the federal agents the two of them did marijuana and as it says in the Court Documents acid or presumably lsd, four to five times a week from 2014 to 2015. Now the actual charges against collie today are separate from the shooting. The charges are that he bought a handgun and when he did so, he checked on the federal form that he was not a drug user. They say that was a lie. And they say so thats one charge. And the second charge is continuing to possess a handgun while hes a drug user. That makes you unqualified under federal law to have a weapon if youre a drug user. So theres no allegation that the weapon he bought, the handgun had anything to do with the shooting. Instead they say he bought these items for betts at betts request so his parents wouldnt know he was getting them. Theres no indication collie knew what betts was planning. Pete womeniums, thanks for that. One of the things he bought was this hundred round magazine. Theres been a lot of conversation about background checks, about these red flag laws. I know a lot of gun owners, i dont know one who says, yeah, i need for my sports shooting a hundredround magazine. I mean realisticly again as somebody who knew this from the inside, where can democrats go that republicans may actually listen to their voters . I think the restrictions on large magazines, magazines of this magnitude are a sensible place to go in this debate. I know people in rural areas use weapons as to control predators on their land for people want to be prepared to defend their homes. But i cant see any justification for having Something Like a hundred round magazine, but its clearry a weapon of war widely available to civilians and i think that is place where we ought to be able to start to find that Common Ground that allows us to start to make progress on this issue in a way that will have obsis tangible benefits in the future. Chairman nadler last week announced his committee will be conducting an impeachment inquiry into the president. Hell be conducting negotiations on gun control. What do you see sort of as the inner working here if indeed President Trump needs to get onboard for anything to happen between now and 2021 . Well, ill use one word here, trust. And michael touched on this a bit. I noticed some of the language coming out of mcconnells office. You can tell that Mitch Mcconnell does not want to own this issue. He keeps putting it back on donald trump. Even when trump suggested mcconnell was already onboard, mcconnells people pushed back and said, no, we have not made that decision yet. Same thing the president said the nra was onboard with, we havent heard that from the nra. It feels its a hot potato from the highest ranks of leadership. The president doesnt want to own it, Mitch Mcconnell doesnt want it to own it and Mitch Mcconnell doesnt trust this president. Hes been burned several times before by this president and pulling the rug from under him on important legislative initiatives. Michael steele, always appreciate your time. Thank you, sir. And up next the return of the joe biden gaffe machine, but will that matter in a potential race against donald trump . Will race against donald trump . Most people think a button is just a button. Right now, get 0 apr on all 2019 lincoln vehicles plus no payments for up to 90 days. Only at your lincoln dealer. The democratic frontrunner and selfdescribed gaffe machine joe biden had a rough couple of days on it trail. On saturday biden said hed met with survivors of the packland shooting while Vice President. That shooting happened more than a year after he left office. His staff said he meant new. Ton. He also flubbed a line at the iowa state fair saying we choose truth over facts. And he confused the late british Prime MinisterMargaret Thatcher with the very much alive angela merkel. Biden misstated the locations of Mass Shootings saying they happened in houston and michigan. Those shootings of course took place in el paso, texas, and dayton, ohio. And he raised eyebrows when he said poor kids are just as bright and talented as white kids. Unsurprisingly President Trump seized on those missteps tweeting does anybody believe hes menally fit to be president . Were playing in a big and complicated world. Joe doesnt have a clue. Well, we should note this critique from donald trump comes just as the Washington Post fact checker has clocked trump over 12,000 false and misleading claims in his 928 days in office. According to them that breaks down to an aberage of 13 fishy claims a day. But even more, 20 a day since he passed the 10,000 park. In other words, its getting worse. Joining me democratic strategist and former Senate Leadership aide and also jeff mason. So much of his standing in the polls frankly is about electability and if democrats start to perceive hes looking tired or hes giving donald trump a target, is it a problem . Its a problem if it becomes a tearatinarrative that starts out and has taken hold in some circles. I think its about the endurance of a Long Campaign which by the way even people 15 or 20 years younger than joe biden who may not be at the stage of their career he is would probably struggle as well. This is Long Distance marathon. One of the things i will not stand for is donald trump talking about anyones Mental Fitness to be president. That is laughable. That should be rejected outright. So donald trump has no standing to question anyones Mental Fitness to pea president. Anybody who actually becomes the nominee is going to be a twitter target for donald trump, that is given. Does it make it any less effective his twitter bully pulpit when he is the guy who as the Washington Post puts it spouts exaggerations both in outright falsehoods at a remarkable pace . It depends on whos reading those and reacting to them. I mean the president s base and the people who support President Trump have accepted that and or decided what hes saying when they are false, when the issues hes discussing they are are not true, that they are. Thats been accepted and tolerated by people who are trump supporters. Is it something that the Biden Campaign and any other campaign if its not joe biden who ends up becoming the nominee would focus on, absolutely. But in the meantime as youve said and this is certainly true, the president is going to focus on gaffes from joe biden because hes leading in the polls. He wrote this, when the president of the United States is the most prolific liar in american political history, he just passed 12,000 false or misleading claims and is waging a Reelection Campaign base said on racism and fear, the idea gaffes are an Important Campaign issue is particularly offensive. I would challenge anyone to explain how the number of gaffes actually tells us something meaningful about his or her prospective presidency. In the end and im sure joe biden wishes he had some of the things he says back as have many candidates over the years, is he being held to a different standard than the president . I think everyone is held to a different standard than the president and thats a pretty obvious point. I think what joe biden look, its the issue everyone is tiptoeing around. He would be, what, 78 years old or Something Like that when he would be inaugurated president. I think theres an age issue flowing out there. That age issue doesnt talk about Bernie Sanders and doesnt talk about it like it should when you talk about donald trump. Thats the world joe biden has presented and his campaign has to mitigate. I think the biden folks, its interesting, they actually really pulled back his schedule early on i think in part to protect their candidate. As someone whos been on a campaign you can tell the hallmarks of that. They really went out of their way to make sure he was not tired, not overwhelmed with schedule. I would be surprised if you actually saw them pull back a bit on his schedule coming up here soon just again to protect the candidate and allow him the opportunity to get his sea legs under him again. We havent done any polling on this but the wall street journal did speak to supporters out in iowa and they did seem to give him a pass. Saying, quote, i really dont think theres anything concerning at this point with that. The gaffes in and of themselves do not necessarily trouble me but he needs to be more disciplined in his message. And Jennifer Van Deveer said the flubs are understandable. Quote, slipups happen at every age, you know, so that doesnt bother me because i think in his heart hes a good person. Ultimately when trump goes after him for this, is he just speaking to his base . Well, i think so, yes, but i think hes also a candidate. Now, President Trump of course is a candidate for reelection. Hes also looking for weaknesses in the people who might be running against him. And he sees that as a weakness. But i think the quote you just read will be very heartening to the Biden Campaign. I think its also worth noting this is candidate now, Vice President biden whos been in the public sphere for decades. Hes had a reputation of these gaffes from decades but hes also gotten pretty high up desite that reputation. Does it mean its not a weakness for him against president donald trump, of course not. But hes managed to make it through. And i think when voters look at what is the gaffe and what is the weight we should give to a gaffe versus what is the weight we should give to an untruth if youre a democratic voter that is probably a question that wont be that hard to answer. Thank tuesday both of you. Mush appreciated. Well, biden gaffe werent the only topic creating buzz at the iowa state fair. A state which according to the usda has more than 86,000 farms. Nbc news reports that since the fight began u. S. Agriculture exports to china have plummeted to 19 1 2 billion in 2017 to just 9. 2 billion in 2018 merchandise Government Farm braemgss a braem bankruptcies are on the rise. And 76 believe they will bear the brunt of the tariff fight. Joining me now, youve been talking to farmers out there in iowa. What have they told you about whether or not they still support President Trump . There are more than 20 president ial canned dd here over thewalk at the iowa state fair. The iowa state fair is much more than politics and cotton candy and corn dogs. This essentially becomes the epicenter over the course of these two weeks. Youve got cattle, youve got hogs. And essentially the conversation is unavoidable around here around trumps trade war. Essentially its in a year and a half now and those conversations are persisting. Just earlier two weeks ago the president announced an additional 10 tariff on 300 billion worth of chinese goods. In retaliation china said they were going to stop buying u. S. Agriculture products. When youre having those conversations with the farmers here, theres a lot of concern. What does that mean for their own operation . In the last two years folks have a had a hard time. Theres been an increase in bankruptcies and where does it go from here . The president has suggested this may go all the way to 2020, the next president ial election. I want to introduce you, though, to jim and jerry johnson. Two farmers from iowa who i just met. These are some of their concerns. Its taken away a huge market. And particularly for soybeans theyve been developed over a long period of time and now theyre not participating in that market anymore. How does that make you feel . Its frustrating. Its very frustrating buzz its so unnecessary. When you go in and just one day arbitrarily say, okay, this is what were doing without any negotiations at all, you just feel like youre in the hands of somebody whos throwing darts. To note, chris, its hard to find a group that is more optimistic than farmers here in the middle of the country. The question, though, will they ultimately go and support President Trump . A year from now in the 2020 election, thats a conversation well be continuing to have because a good number of these farmers say we want to see President Trump and whether he can ultimately get that deal with china, the very deal theyve been calling for sever since that 2016 election. Thats what the New York Times found in an extensive review comparing the language of right wing media personalities and that of the el paso killer. Language like invaders or invasion or a fear of immigrants, quote, flooding the u. S. To, quote, replace americans. According to the times that language has surged since President Trump started vilifying immigrants, repeatedly using the word invasion himself. And thats after defending white nationalists in charlottesville. Its been two years to the day since a man killed a protester at a white supremacist rally in charlottesville, virginia. A rally the president described like this. You had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides. Very fine people. Joining me the Washington PostWhite House Reporter washingto White House Reporter ashley parker. Pbs news correspondent unish alsinder. Ashley, being called a racist has led trump to lash out, you write, behave or his allies explain as the natural reaction of someone who doesnt consider themselves being racist, but is accused of being one. Talk a little about the proof you lay out about his history of racist statements. Trump bristles at being called a racist. Its becoming hes a sort of master brander. Its threatening to become this brand he cant shake. To get to the question you asked me, trump does have a history of comments and behaviors that in some instances are plainly racist. For instance, ill put point you to a tweet President Trump sent a month ago referring to the four Democratic Senators he told to go back to the countries to which they came. Three out of four was born in the United States. The fourth was born in somalia but is a naturalized u. S. Citizen. President trump came to the presidency by propagating the racist theory of birtherism. Theres a long list of his past behavior. Some of it is not necessarily racist. It is racially charged or racially problematic. For instance the idea he pitched of doing a season of the apprentice that was black contestants versus white contestants. Hes stepped up to that line of racism, sometimes jumping over it, and is now shocked and dismayed to find himself branded a racist. Shocked and dismayed. A strategy clearly of being unapologetic in the case of being called a racist. Do the folks of the white house who often have to go on television and explain away the things he says and does, do they wish he would apologize . Do they think this lack of apology, lack of contrition that something he says can lead to a bad outcome give his supporters cover . Everyone i talked to in the white house and the people who have been successful in staying in the white house are people who have rolled with the punches and defended the president at every cost. People tell me if you want to survive in the President Trump white house, what you do is not try to change President Trump, you just adjust to his messaging and do the best you can. You see the racist tweets about the four congress women. The white house was prying to piv pivot. They said what he meant is they should leave this country. You have to look at the president as a whole. If you go back before his political career, what you saw was him and his father being sued because they didnt want to rent apartments to African Americans and was putting c on applications which meant people of color. You have this president getting to be president with the racist idea of president obama not being born in this country. Republicans are kind of embarrassed about this, but are sticking beside the president. Ive seen people excited about this. I have had people saying ive been wanting to tell my neighbor to go back to their country. I dont see that as racism. You have people around the country who are seeing this as a good political thing, not as racism, but saying what people are thinking around the country. That makes people fearful, including latinos, who are fearful somebody is going to shoot up another walmart or cvs or a school and theyre inspired by the president s language. Then she was on a mission. Biles went on the balance beam, a double, double dismount, two twists, two flips. Perfection again. As the today show put it, its less than a year before the 2020 olympics in tokyo and shes put the world on notice. Its important we acknowledge her courage to move her sport forward off the mat. Biles abused herself by larry nassar, one of hundreds, who is serving a 60 year prison sentence. She gave an interview where she made it clear she feels betrayed by u. S. Gymnastics. Simone biles, extraordinary in so many ways. Are you listening out there . The people who supposed to be protecting these athletes are you listening . Hey ali. Its amazing when she said you had one job. When you look at what she does, its not easy. She did do everything they asked and all they wanted was some protection. Its remarkable. Shes extraordinary.
