His vision of america is a rather nightmarish one where radical militant leftists try to destroy the country. He said as much last night. The leading voices of the Democratic Party are left wing extremists. Republicans know that america is the greatest force for peace and justice in the history of our world. But these left wing see our nation as a force of evil. They want to depolish our constitution, weaken our military. And trump reaffirmed the message in the video subtitled one squad under god. Critics allege the president is playing into tropes of white racial resentment and may be more potent. According to a pew poll, nearly half of White Americans say a majorityminority country would weaken american customs and values. Now, on the other side of the aisle, democrats who just yesterday tabled the measure to impeach the president over his comments, blasted the president s rally calling it disgraceful and lacking decency. Congresswoman omar addressed the attacks earlier this afternoon arguing its all against the spirit of america. I want to remind people that this is what this president and his supporters have turned our country that is supposed to be a country where we allow democratic debate and descent to take place. This is about us fighting for what this country truly should be and what it deserves to be. So our big question today is whose vision of america will voters choose in 2020 . Joining me Washington PostWhite House Reporter ashley parker, eugene scott, associate press White House Reporter so ashley, you were at that rally last night. This afternoon, he is disavowing the center back chant. Was there any inclination he was uncomfortable with it. Did he as john mccain did, when a woman suggested president obama wasnt born in the u. S. , say anything to show his disapproval . There is a template to actually disavow something and to publicly and actively show disapproval. I went back and i finished watching that clip of what i also experienced first hand about half dozen times. What happens is he is speaking and there is sort of a smattering of shutting that out. I think we may have that critical part actually taken out. Let me play it and then you can finish on the other side. Sure. Tonight i have the suggestion for the hatefilled extremists who are constantly trying to tear our country down. They never have anything good to say. Thats why i say if they dont like it, let them leave. Let them leave. Let them leave. Theyre always telling us how to run it, how to do this. You know what, if they dont love it, tell them to leave it. What do you make of that . Is that your recollection . There was nothing there suggesting he didnt want to say get out, leave the country. He was the one who initially suggested it in that tweet sunday morning. In the crowd when he starts to go after congresswoman omar, you sort of hear here and there in the crowd. Its a little softer and then there comes the moment when he is midway into his screed against her when the entire arena begins roaring and erupts into that send her back chant. The president pauses. He stops and turns to the left and lets go of the podium and grabs the podium again. He turns to the right and 12 full seconds go by before he begins speaking again. When he does start speaking again, its not to disavow it or calm the crowd down, its actually to continue attacking her. I believe the next thing he did was accuse her of antisemitism. That is what happened in the rally last night. What do you make of him walking this back today . Was walking it back and saying he doesnt approve of it, he says to the congresswomen the obligation is to love your country as to assume that they dont. He is lying. We can play this game every time the president denies something there is video of. This is a dangerous moment. So lets not play this game and fall into the trap of he said and deny the thing that we all know happened. Lets talk about what this means in this moment. This is a dangerous moment. Ilhan omars life is all in danger in this moment. Its not as if White Nationalist terrorism is unprecedented. We had last fall a supporter of donald trump send literal bombs to former president s. Ilhan was included in that list of opponents. I think that we need to be serious in this moment, every single republican who has not called this out in strong terms is a coward and somebody is going to get hurt. Do you think that these chants are the clearest reflection of the president s strategy of embracing white identity politics. Do you read anything into the fact that last night although he certainly referenced all four women, he largely focussed on ilhan omar, the one member of the squad who was not born in the u. S. We know the president built his campaign on white identity politics. He has responded to what existed way before he actually got into the president ial race. We certainly had people express great interest in getting rid of people from this country who did not look like White American christians. And trump tapped into that. Hes encouraged it and increased the interest and the world view says this is acceptable and wants to move forward with it and is planning to do so in 2020. He thinks he can go out and rewrite history, Say Something that is absolutely different than what we see when you roll the video tape. And were supposed to accept that. His behavior last night during those chants is exactly the same when he does when there are lock her up chants. Its like this is the new lock her up. We have somebody else we are going after. He steps tupe the podem. He milks the moment and he is speaking without rebuke for what the crowd was chanting. Thats why maybe i was surprised that he did this today. He has been very up front about the fact that he often sort of makes his own decisions about where he is going to go based on the reaction he gets from the crowd and the crowd there clearly liked that chant. The walk back is a little surprising tlmpt are republicans who expressed frustration today with the chant last night. Maybe he heard that. It has gotten a lot of media coverage. He responds and reacts to what he sees on television. Last nights rally was supposed to be the rebuttal to Robert Muellers testimony. The rally was scheduled. In the interim, the president found a new story line. Its the four Congress Women of color. He has decided that that is where he wants to be right now. He wants to have that fight. He wants to argue on white identity politics and argue that they should not be it comes with real risks and particularly in the suburbs and with women, voters he will need if he is going to get a second term. I think axios word about this. America has a whole and swing states in particular are growing more diverse more quickly. There is no way republicans can change birth rates or curb this trend and there is not a single demographic mega trend that favors republicans. So is the president thinking he can combat that trend . Is he just tapping into the anger its causing . What do you see going on here . I certainly think he does. In an interview with time earlier this year, he said he isnt sure he needs swing voters because he is counting on his base to be so faithful that if he turns them out then that would be enough for him to win the election as a whole. We know in the past when president s are running for reelection they usually try to win people to their side that werent with them the first go around. Thats snot something that this president have trying to do. He is trying to remind his base that he is who he told them that he was and hopes that will keep them with him and inspire them to continue to support him despite the fact that he is losing independents, women and all of the groups he didnt win in the first place. He has people who are working in his campaign who understand the numbers. Its not as if they dont see whats happening here. He Still Believes that he can still win by playing to this minority. He is steering the ship here. His Campaign Manager is quoted saying he thinks there are very few undecideds. Its more about purely a base election. Turn out people like you that maybe didnt come out to vote last time. Its true in 2016, people came out to vote for donald trump who have not voted in several cycles who are not picked up by many polls. He is counting on that again combined with a good economy to try to thread the needle to get a second term. Its obviously a dangerous strategy. Not only are you risking rebuke from your own party which he has gotten some. You are a there is the sliver of democrats. The obama 2012 voters and its hard to imagine that this argument, this right here is going to help them win the next time around. What about the democratic response . They have talked a lot. Yesterday when they had a chance to vote to move forward on impeachment, they didnt do it. Politico writes the toxic relationship continues to hit new lows. Thats not stopping Speaker Nancy Pelosi from working with them and green light the signature trade deal later this fall. Are the democrats doing what they should be doing . Is it okay just to Say Something but not do something . I was pretty disappointed yesterday, not because i think that we should impeach this president in this moment. Its because to vote and say that those tweets are racist and wrong, thats an easy vote. That should be an easy vote. I think that for us not to even have a debate about it, that actually is a reflection of this moment where we are so uncomfortable with complete unabashed racism that we cant have a dialogue on the house floor about whether or not thats okay embodied by the president each and every day. Going back to monday, you know, i think folks misheard or misunderstood what the four congressmen were saying on monday. Ilhan quoted from founding documents and said we should live up to an ideal that all men were created equal. My aunt marched from selma. This is all very visceral for me. When i see that rally, that looks like a clan rally to me in 2019. And what are we going to do about that as american citizens to stand up against this hate before somebody gets hurt. Youre coming back. Thank you so much for that. We appreciate that. Still ahead this hour, fiery testimony on capitol hill with the acting dhs chief taking heat for the child separation policy. As you will see, his words didnt sit well with lawmakers. Search warrants were released that give new indications of how involved President Trump may have been in arranging the hush money payments to Stephanie Clifford better known as Stormy Daniels. In new documents, explosive testimony from an fbi agent that details phone calls including the president suggesting a rush in the final days of the 2016 campaign to keep trumps alleged affair quiet. Cohen exchanges a series of calls with keith davidson, david pecker and dylan howard of American Media inc. , trump and hope hicks who was then press secretary for trumps president ial campaign. These calls, five of them, were placed in october. And they took place amid the release of the access hollywood video. Youll remember that in that video, then candidate trump bragged about sexually assaulting women. It nearly ended trumps candidacy. A fact that the fbi agent notes in his testimony. Based on the timing of the calls and content, i believe that at least some of the communications concern the need to prevent clifford from going public particularly in the wake of the access hollywood story. Joining me now tom winter who is out there in beautiful aspen, colorado. I know you had a chance to go through the pages. What do they suggest and what do they not tell us about whether the president was directly involved in coordinating efforts to keep Stormy Daniels silent . I think they tell us a lot. Its about 20 pages. We had gotten the search warrants unsealed and partially unredacted several months ago. Today we got 20 pages specific to the Campaign Finance investigation in that exact quote that you laid out there. Basically, it shows five phone calls starting on october 8, two phone calls 7 20 and 8 03 p. M. On october 8 between cohen and trump and at one point with hope hicks on the line, another phone call, david pecker who heads up the American Media incorporated which is the publisher of the national inquirer. There is a phone call around that time. About two weeks passes. There is discussions about this agreement for Stormy Daniels not to disclose what she says is her alleged affair with the president , an allegation he has denied, of course. And for her to receive 130,000. Then on october 26, there are two more phone calls between trump and cohen. Thats an important day because thats the day the money was put into escrow. Cohen puts the money into an account where it is holding as long as he gets the agreement back from daniels and her attorney. They have two phone conversations that day. And then the last phone conversation happens on october 28. Its about five minutes according to the court documents. It happens at 11 48 in the morning. Thats the day that everything kind of gets wrapped up with respect to the documents and the agreement. Of course, thats quite close to the election. So thats what we learned today as far as new information about the president s involvement. The fbi agent is quit to point out that the president had few contacts with Michael Cohen tworks phone calls in september, none in august. In one phone call in july, june and may each. So they hadnt been talking a lot. All of a sudden there is a lot of discussions that occur between them. That was part of the information that was included in the probable cause affidavit. Ben, we heard from jay seccialo basically painting the news today that this is the end of the investigation as vindication of trump. And now we are hearing from Michael Cohen himself. He wrote this. Sekulows statement is completely distorted and dishonest. As i stated in my own testimony, and i members of the Trump Organization were directed by mr. Trump to handle the Stormy Daniels matter. The conclusion of the investigation exonerating the role should be of great concern to the American People and investigated by congress and the department of justice. Based on testimony from the agent and the documents and you what you have read, is it surprising that no one else looks like they are going to face the music, so to speak . First of all, i would say i actually agree that this is a big win for the president. I do think it is at some level surprising given the evidence that was put on in the context of the Michael Cohen plea. That said, most criminal cases dont materialize in the white collar setting. So these cases are hard to bring. The Southern District of new york appears to have investigated it pretty hard and worked it pretty hard for a long 350e period of time. It is a bit of a head scratcher to me why no additional cases materialized against any of the other participants in this scheme leave aside the president , himself, who of course cant be indicted under current executive branch interpretations of the constitution. But there are other actors here, including the Trump Organization itself that on the face of things seem to have a lot of exposure. I think it is a bit mysterious why no additional cases materialized at the end of the day. Is this the end of it . Are we going to wipe our hands and this is done, over, finished . Ben . So i think like thats what federal prosecutors do. They work a case and work a case and at the moment where they make a determination that they cant make a case, they walk away and they dont issue a statement as a general matter that says here is everything we found and why we cant make a case here. Thats, of course, what bob mueller did in the report and what jim comey did in the Hillary Clinton email theres no such thing as a born winner. So start driving and dont stop. Because no one takes off at the finish line. And the only way to get that trophy, is to take it. Net generation. Official youth tennis of the usta. Acting dhs secretary today argued before a Congressional Committee that it was actually rare for a child to be separated from its family at the border and claims that the trump administrations child separation policy is now the same as it was before the zero tolerance policy was put into effect. He defended the agencys treatment of detained immigrants at the southern border though chairman Elijah Cummings was having none of it. Im talking about the result im talking about human beings. Im not talking about people that come from as the president said, sh holes, these are human beings. You feel like you are doing a great job, right . We are doing our level best. What does it mean . What does it mean when a child is sitting in their own feces, cant take a shower . Come on, man. Whats that about . None of us would have our children in that position. We are the United States of america. We are the greatest country in the world. We are the ones that can go anywhere in the world and save people, make sure they have diapers, make sure they have toothbrushes, make sure theyre not laying around defecating in some silver paper. Come on. Were better than that. While that was going on, 70 people were protesting the treatment of migrants arrested by capitol police. Joining me now is julia ansly. Its good to see both of you. Julia, a lot of emotion on the democratic side. We just saw that from the chairman. He tried to respond by dropping a lot of numbers today. What did he say and are those numbers accurate . He did drop a lot of numbers and for the most part they are accurate, but i want to put them in context. He talked about 700 children separated from their parents or legal guardians this fiscal year so since october. He talked about how that is such a small percentage when you think about the fact that there are nearly 400,000 people who have come across the border as part of a family. That does actually jive from what we have heard from immigration attorneys. Its somewhere within that range. That does fit, but what he was pressed on is whether or not some of the children should not have been separated. He said it was in the best interest of the parent. There were a lot of examples that democrated posed where maybe a parent was arrested for a gang affiliation but were really a victim of the gang or charged and convicted of marijuana possession. I want to stop you there. I thought this was a critical part of the hearing. They asked him specifically about cases where they felt that the justification for separating children from their parents was not okay, was not within guidelines. He said he would not discuss those specific cases, correct . It was almost tiresome how often we went back and forth on that scenario. This Oversight Committee put out a robust support about toddlers who were separated. He said they did not have a policy of separating anyone under the age of five even during that zero tolerance policy. He kept saying there might be extenuating circumstances. They dont want to get into specific cases. I think it did get tiresome when we couldnt get answers as to why some of the things had occurred. There is one other number. He said that 15 of families, people who claim to be families have been dna tested and found not to be related. The families who are pulled aside to be dna tested are those who are already suspected of being fraudulent. In general, the number of overall families who were found not to be actually related is fewer than one percent of all families crossing. I thought that was important to point out because a big argument were hearing from this administration right now is these arent really families. They are recycling children. The problem is much smaller than that. Less than one percent. We know that this president when there is Something Big that is on television, he watches and the people who are in his administration know that he is watching. I dont know whether this rises to that level for him. I was thinking as i was watching today, does the white house largely view this controversy as something thats basically in their rear view mirror that they have survived this controversy . I think they do, but there is other pieces of it. He was also asked about the detention facilities in general. And as you know the president has been dealing with that. A lot of criticism about what the facilities are like. The Vice President recently went last week and looked at one and they were pushed back very hard at the publicity they got. The white house and the president are i dont suspect the president was watching the hearing. I suspect he is looking at what the coverage is like, how he pushed back on it if he felt like he was strong enough. The president very much likes when his officials are out there on capitol hill or in front of cameras really pushing back, touting the Administration Policy and really holding their own. Hell be watching that. The acting dhs secretary has been sort of getting it from democrats and republicans. There is a lot of republicans and hard line immigration people that are not happy with him and obviously the democrats are not happy with him, either. Theyll be watching and sort of monitoring how he is doing. Thanks to both of you. Its muchappreciated. We just heard from joe biden. The big story was the president saying that last night those chants where he stood back and listened as people in the crowd in North Carolina shouted send her back, that he thinks now he says he wasnt happy about the chant although he did not say anything last night or do anything to indicate that he was not happy with the chant. In los angeles, the former Vice President joe biden was asked about the president s rally last night. Of course, the comments center back directed towards democratic congresswoman ilhan omar. Well, i only saw a clip of it. You would assume, you can imagine if someone said that when i was speaking i would have said no, stop. Speak up, man. Not after the fact. Not after the fact. Look he said he started speaking. Do you think he is trying to have it both ways . To have that in the moment and then walk it back . He does that all the time with everything. When he made the point that he was coddling White Supremacists and he said they are just going to see jeffersons what was it . General statue. He must be blind and deaf because if he didnt hear what they were saying then i dont understand it. This is a game. This is about dividing the country. This is about dividing and raising the issue of racism across the country. Joe biden responding to the president saying just within the last hour or so. He followed that up by saying these women hate their country and you have an obligation to hate your country. A judge says Jeffrey Epstein orders him to stay behind bars. Despite the legal teams efforts to put him back in his town house, a federal judge ruled today that the accused child sex predator will not be released on bail. Its inside that same townhouse where he is accused of sexually abusing multiple girls more than a decade ago as well as in his mansion in florida. He has pleaded not guilty and was willing to put 100 million up for bond. The judge today said i doubt any bail package can overcome the dangerousness to the community and called epstein a flight risk. Legal teams for the accusers praised the judges decision. Only by taking away the freedom of Jeffrey Epstein can we restore the freedom of these victims. They have been living in fear and intimidation since the day they were abused by him and now he is in jail. Stephanie gosk has more from the courthouse. Reporter Jeffrey Epstein is not getting out of jail at least not yet as he gets out of jail on the two charges. If he is convicted on those charges, he could be sentenced to up to 45 years. If you do the math, he is a 66yearold man. That could mean he is in prison for the rest of his life. The federal judge in this case came out and very quickly in a short hearing said he would not be giving Jeffrey Epstein bail. He said that there was clear evidence presented by the federal prosecutors that Jeffrey Epstein is still a danger to the community. He also cited specifically the two accusers that gave testimony on monday. Its unusual to have that kind of testimony during a bail hearing although not completely unheard of. Were told by some legal analysts that it is an indication of how deliberate and careful new york authorities are being to make sure that the alleged victims in this case are being heard. You will remember that case in florida over a decade ago, accusers felt that their voices werent being heard. That is already happening in this process. The judge went on to say that there was a preponderance of evidence that Jeffrey Epstein was a flight risk. You put all of that together and there is no bail. Time for round two. Could we see joe biden and Bernie Sanders faceoff in person over their Health Care Plans . There is a chance Elizabeth Warren will share the stage with a fellow top tier candidate or two. And can senator Kamala Harris hold on to the momentum she gained after the first debate . Now that they have seen how effective her attack on Vice President joe biden was, will other democrats scrap the promise to be nice and beat up on each other . Could this debate move the polls the way we continue to see the race settling after round one . Congressman eric is out and quit the race. Joining me, senior director of progressive programming for sirius xm. Good to see both of you. So tonight we will find out who takes the stage what night. How important might those results be for candidates heading into the final event before the beginning of this new part of the election cycle which i consider to be september and the third debate where i think we will see a big widdling. I think it is very important if you see someone like cory booker who despite a good debate performance did not see a large increase in his poll numbers. I think to be on the stage with Kamala Harris and joe biden would give an opportunity for lesser known candidates who are still struggling to perhaps take a shot at one of the front runners to somehow distinguish themselves policy wise which could benefit them financially and could benefit them as they need to see the numbers increase to try to get into the third debate. Its so interesting to me when i go out what democrats tell me. And its reflected in the polls. 82 of registered voters say they are either closely paying attention or somewhat closely paying attention to the campaign, but another poll found only 12 have decided on a candidate because what i keep hearing is im going to watch the debates and see who i think can beat trump. Democrats are engaged, but undecided. How important does it make the debates . Debates are always important. The winner of debates doesnt necessarily go on to victory. So people who do debates argue the early debates are more important othan later oneonone debates. It sets the narrative for your campaign, why you are running. Campaign, why you are running. To the but i also think that, you know, the critically important strategy out of a debate is how are you going to keep the momentum going. I think Kamala Harris demonstrated in the first debate that you can take a viral moment and then kickstart, you know, fundraising progress. So i think other candidates need to figure out how to make those moments happen in this upcoming debate. What follows those moments . Money and poll numbers. We saw that with Kamala Harris, which does kind of beg the question if were going to see a little more of the more aggressive strategy from some of these folks. Look, when you have 20 people on this stage over two nights, you might get seven, eight minutes of air time. You better make the most of them. I mean, look, each candidate has to figure out a way to dising wish themselves. We saw that with Kamala Harris. I think Elizabeth Warren did a very good job of figuring out a way to discuss the nuance of her policy issues and very quick sound bytes that really resonated with a lot of individuals. For some of those candidates who have not seen their numbers improve, they are going to realize as this process continues, they may no longer be able to qualify for those debates. So i can guarantee you some of them are going to be looking for something. Some kind of zinger that will resonate with people that can increase their numbers and also take advantage of the new cycle that will obviously quickly follow those debates for the next several days. So, again, i expect individuals like cory booker to attempt to make an effort similar to what Kamala Harris did, maybe against the frontrunner like joe biden to distinguish himself. The other thing we are dealing with obviously is a schedule of prime raise thats been shaking up. California, very important. If you want to see one of the impacts, zerlina, of this strong debate performance by Kamala Harris, look at the poll in her home state of california. She was nowhere near winning there. Now shes essentially in a dead heat with joe biden. What are the latest numbers in the quinnipiac poll . Shes at 23. Biden, 21. Sanders, 18. And then you look most of the rest of the people are at 3, 2, 1 . Elizabeth warren came up pretty strongly there. She is also widely regarded as winning the first night. So when you look at a poll number like that, and youre one of the folks whos at 1, 2 and thats not going to be enough anymore, the pressure. Oh, the pressure. Theres going to be pressure, institutional pressure, for folks to run for senate. What do you think of the poll by the way . It shows that that electability conversation we were having about the women, thats over. The women demonstrated in the debates well, its not over, but maybe it should be. What they demonstrated is that they can go toe to toe with donald trump and they went toe to toe with joe biden. So i think its important that we demonstrate in this moment that the women can become the president. They are showing us that. They are showing us our plans. They are explaining their plans. Today a renewal of the 9 11 Victim Compensation fund couldve been a done deal. Yesterday new york senator and president ial candidate Kirsten Gillibrand called for unanimous consent to get the money where its needed. Then an objection from across the aisle. Any new program thats going to have the longevity of 70, 80 years should be offset by cutting spending thats less valuable. I will be offering up an amendment should it come to the floor, but until then i will object. Kentucky senator rand paul killing the fast track to funding. Utah senator mike lee also objected. But the backlash thats followed has mostly focused on paul because critics say his reasoning is hypocritical for arguing against this funding out of deficit concerns. He failed to make the same argument about the president s 1. 5 trillion tax cut, a tax cut senator paul voted for. A tax cut that increased the National Deficit which may exceed 1 trillion for the full budget year. This also comes after very public emotional testimony by former daily Showhost Jon Stewart who went viral for his condemnation of congress for failing to help these heroes, one of whom who testified along stewart. Just weeks later bomb squad detective Louise Alvarez died from cancer which is tied from his work to ground zero. Its absolutely outrageous, and pardon me if im not impressed in any way by rand pauls fiscal responsibility virtue signaling. He presented tissuepaper avoidance of the 1. 5 trillion tax cut that added hundreds of billions of dollars to our deficit. And now he stands up at the last minute after 15 years of blood, sweat, and tears from the 9 11 community to say that its all over now, now were going to balance the budget on the backs of the 9 11 First Responder community. We want to be very clear. The bill to renew the 9 11 Compensation Fund is far from dead. Senator Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell has fast tracked a full vote on the funding. But in a few minutes we are going to hear from senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand after the minority leader announced an agreement moment ago to vote on a bill by next wednesday that will include amendments by senators paul and lee. So we will be watching. That wraps things up for this hour. Im chris jansen in new york. Scores, scores of 9 11 First Responders have died since 9 11 from complications related to the heart. There should be a red line when it comes to 9 11 Compensation Fund. And i think i can say thats where i stand on that, that that money should not be played with ultimately. Those people need to be taken care of. They are heroes of this country. They saved so many lives that day. They put their lives on the line. And and they lost their friends and loved ones. And they lost their friends and loved ones on that day and they need to be taken care of. They really do. Good seeing you. Have a great show. Thank you. Have a good rest of your day.
