With her fascination of columbine, thats pretty clear and convincing evidence that we have a threat to the school. Joining me from outside Columbine High School nbcs correspondent joe fryer along with nbc News Reporter brandy zad roz any and frank feg gluzly, also an Msnbc National Security analyst. Joe, i want to start with you. We heard from Law Enforcement officials there in colorado. What did we learn . Reporter yeah, well, really Jefferson County is one of many counties that have been impacted by this. There has been so much attention focused on this county because of the school you see behind me there, Columbine High School. Of course, its known for a mass shooting that happened 20 years ago. 12 students were killed along with a teacher. We are now three days away from the 20th anniversary of that shooting. Its something that has been weighing on the minds of people here for quite some time. In fact, i was actually here in littleton a few weeks ago for a day that was sort of set up for the media to try to speak with families who wanted to talk with the media, including parents who lost their children that day, survivors. They wanted to try to do this well in advance of the anniversary so the families would have some peace and have the day to themselves to really focus on honoring and remembering the victims. So what weve just heard, first of all, from School Officials is now that this is over they are definitely relieved in the school district. They plan to return back to class tomorrow. So things will resume to normal. There will be a larger Law Enforcement presence, especially as students are coming and going to and from class even though this particular threat has been removed. And the plan is to try to move forward with events that are taking place later this week, including a vigil on friday and a special remembrance ceremony thats happening on saturday. Keep in mind that while this has gotten a lot of attention, the superintendent has said that in the past couple of weeks threats here at columbine have ramped up because the anniversary has been approaching. Really any time this school is in the news, they tend to see more threats or sometimes even when there is School Shootings in other places like parkland, florida, last year. They also received threats here. So its something they deal with often, but they are hoping three days before the anniversary that they will be able to focus on whats coming up and remembering the victims. But certainly this has been a difficult situation for those in the community. If you were listening to the News Conference you heard from frank deangelis, he was the principal when this happened. He stayed as principal 15 years. He made a pledge. Every kid in the School System when that shooting happened in 1999, he wanted to see them all through to graduation and then he retired after that happened in 2014. But he remains an integral part of this community. He says he was actually here at the school yesterday when word first came down through the fbi, relayed to local authorities that there was this threat. They did these block outs not just here at columbine, but more than 20 schools in Jefferson County and dozens of schools across the denver area. Those lockouts meant business as usual, about but they kept the exterior doors locked. Its important to note that while authorities said there was a credible threat, it was not targeted towards a specific school. Thats part of the reason why the impact of this has been so widespread. Hundreds of schools making the decision today to cancel classes. More than 500,000 students impacted by that. We will hear from these counties as the day progresses. The asusumption is the schools will return to regular business tomorrow. So sol pais was an 18yearold High School Student from miami. She flew from the miami area to colorado earlier this week and investigators believe she bought a pump Action Shotgun and ammunition after she arrived in colorado. She then went into the foothills where she was last seen. Brandy, i want to ask you about a little bit of the background of this woman and how it is investigators knew she was so focused on columbine. What was discovered through the course of this about her motivations, what she put online, and why we understand this about her. Well, they havent specifically said what they found. What we found is she had a couple of blogs she had a blog and a couple of accounts on some sort of art websites where you can post pictures of your drawings. And on her blog we found its disturbing. Its the ramblings of a mentally disturbed person. It seems she was very depressed. At the same time its someone who writes that they are sort of getting over a heartbreak and they dont feel understood and, you know, not so untypical teenage stuff. But what is not typical is that she also posted drawlings of the columbine killers. She posted leeics that they liked. You could see by their diaries. A lot was homage to the columbine killers. So i assume that Law Enforcement has seen that as well and were reacting to that. What we also saw is that she joined a gun forum in january and she was asking for advice on how she could she aimsaid i from miami, going to colorado, and i want to purchase a shotgun. Can anyone help me . Really, really striking. Frank, as you were watching some of that press conference with us, Law Enforcement here clearly, you know, they said this time, you know, what was different from this time as to 20 years ago when the columbine shooting happened was that while, you know, this time we had a plan, whats your assessment of how all of this unfolded and how they handled it . Well, while its inappropriate to say this ended well because there is a tragic death of a young person, it is very appropriate to say and observe that the protocols, procedures, training, communication between and amongst Law Enforcement agencies and the School Officials all fell into place and did work well, and they erred on the side of caution by closing down the schools until they could find and get a handle on this young lady. There are other observations i make here. So, once again, we are wrestling with the gun issue, right . So we have a young lady who gets off a plane, immediately makes, apparently makes a purchase of a shotgun and ammunition. Likely could not produce a local instate address. Had an outofstate i. D. Likely, yet she is able to do that. We need to examine that and what happened, and im sure it will. Lastly, once again we are dealing twith the social media issue and the need for more governance, more introspection of all of the platforms. The warning signs and indicators were there. The good news story, parents, family, friends noticed she was headed towards this act and she was missing and they reported it immediately. We need more of that happening. But we need more of an examination of how much we are aclouds to act out and speak of violence and violent intentions online. Frank, if you are Law Enforcement in this situation how do you make the decision of how to balance kind of the fear and potential detrimental effects you have in closing this many schools with the safety of the populations that you are looking out for . Yeah, i mean, look, all Law Enforcement takes an oath to preserve and protect the safety of the public. So you are always looking at how credible the threat is. And when you do that, you need to assess whether the person has the means, the motive, right, and the intention. And in all three of those categories weve got family telling us something, social media indicating and corroborating the same. We have got a flight from miami to the very place where she is infatuated with the school shooting. We have an anniversary date coming up. By the way, anniversary dates are very big triggers for all of the school shooters, domestic, militia groups that are violent and international terrorists. When you put that all together, the assessment was right on that they needed to close the schools. Brandy, we know that parents seem to be cooperating with Law Enforcement. What is our reporting showing so far about the degree of their cooperation, what they knew ahead of time about their daughter . I mean, we know that the father was talking to a reporter through a door and said, now, he was heartbroken, which is understandable. We know that they have a statement now thats saying we are glad no one else was hurt, which is something. We dont know how much they knew. I mean, i have talked to some friends of hers or people who knew her, took classes with her. She was apparently in a. P. Classes, always doing her homework, and was just quiet. Someone described her as emo, which just is not that rare. So no one respectexpected this. I think everyone is in shock. Thank you very much for your reporting. Frank is going to stick around with us because coming up Pete Buttigieg turns a cheek to antigay protesters as his political stardom gains steam. Also ahead, as measles cases spike across the country how vaccinations became a hyperpartisan issue. Right after this, we are less than a day from the attorney general releasing the redacted mueller report. You to manage my money . Its racquetball time. Ahhh carl, does your firm offer a satisfaction guarantee . Like schwab does. Guarantee . Carl, can you remind me what youve invested my money in. Its complicated. Are you asking enough questions about how your wealth is being managed . If not, talk to schwab. A modern approach to wealth management. The latest inisnt just a store. Its a now theres one store that connects your life like never before store. The xfinity store is here. And its simple, easy, awesome. Turning back here to washington, we are less than 24 hours away from the release of a redacted version of the mueller report. And presumably the white houses report on the report. The president s personal lawyer tells nbc news his team is preparing a 30pluspage response to muellers findings. It will critique the origins of muellers appointment as well as what sekulow describes as irregularities in the investigation. Meanwhile, attorney general bill barr has been working nearly a month on what he calls necessary redactions to muellers nearly 400page report. They will fall into four distinct categories. Grand jury testimony, classified information, material related to ongoing investigations, and information that could infringe on the privacy of socalled, quote, peripheral third parties. That last thing has been a point of contention for Many Democrats who fear that barr can sensor any politically damaging information about the president. Lending credence to the president s premature and inaccurate claims of total exoneration. Earlier this month three government officials told nbc news that some members of muellers team take issue with the president s claims. They argue the full report provides more evidence that the president obstructed justice than attorney general barr has led on and whether or not the attorney general lets the public see that information, however, is unknown. So our big question today is, what wont we learn when barr releases his redacted report tomorrow . Joining me daily beast politics reporter betsy woodruff, kimberly atkins, and back with us former assistant director for counterintelligence at the fbi and Msnbc National Security analyst frank figliuzzi. Thank you all for being here. Betsy, i want to start with you on this question of what wont we learn. Kind of what is the expectation that the white house has for how bradley barr is going to use this authority . I think they are expecting him to take a fairly muscular approach to redacting material. One of the biggest question is who fits into that category of peripheral third parties when you consider, for instance, donald trump jr. Is Jared Kushner peripheral . Neither were charged with crimes. Both of them were clearly extraordinarily of high interest to mueller and the team. One of the other biggest questions that is likely to persist long after tomorrow involves components of the probe that are still ongoing, of course. Questions about foreign money flowing into the president s inaugural committee, questions about efforts by people connected to middle eastern governments, particularly gulf governments to influence president trumps team during the transition period. We can say with a high degree of confidence that the report wont cast any light on those questions, which are both really important. Frank figliuzzi, weve purported that the president s team is going to try to focus on quote unquote irregularities in the investigation. Now, we know that there were 500 witnesses sw witnesses interviewed, 2,800 subpoenas issued, 13 foreign governments that were contacted and nearly 500 search warrants that were executed in the course of this investigation. And while the president s team has tried to undercut mueller publicly, the reality is his reputation is one of, is sterling and one of great kind of care and deliberation throughout the course of this. What do you think they are talking about when they say quote unquote irregularities . Well, i think they are going to focus on the origins or, as the president says, oranges, of the investigation first. I think they are going to look at the spreadcation, what was it that caused the fbi to open a russian counterintelligence case, what was that predicated on. Then, did it appropriately turn into a special counsel inquiry. Of course, we have already seen barr tip his hand and use the word spying with regard to the origins of the inquiry during the campaign. Lo look for more of that. Look for additional attacks on the personnel, the socalled 13 angry democrats despite the fact that muellers team is quite conservative. Professional prosecutors, mueller is a republican and worked for both republican and democratic president s as fbi director. And then look for the repeated mantra of, i have been exonerated. As you pointed out earlier, he has been exonerated by his recently picked attorney general. I am going to be focused on the intentions of mueller, whether we see indications in the report of why mueller didnt call the president for inperson interview, didnt subpoena him for grand jury, and chose not to make the call on obstruction. If we see language in that report that says that i believe, mueller speaking, this decision should go to congress, thats explosive. Thats going to empower the house to start acting perhaps even towards impeachment. Is that the kind of thing, frank, that would be covered under any of these categories of redactable information if mueller is offering his judgment . Does that fall into any of these . I think that escapes the redaction. I think that the intention of mueller is critical. I dont see it as classified. I dont see it as grand jury material. I dont see it as peripheral third parties. So its going to get in there. If he is noted it. My knowledge of having worked with mueller is he memorializes and documents his decisionmaking and thinking. I think its going to be in there. The question is, is it stuck in an addendum, a footnote, an exhibit that barr wont consider part of the report . Here we go with the discussion of a battle that is going to ensue between the hill and the attorney general. A very interesting point. Kimberly atkins, to that point, so members of congress routinely review classified information. Lawfare has written about this. They also point out that they can review sensitive Law Enforcement information or personal information in a nonpublic setting. But this back and forth is going to take weeks, if not months, if not years. And that, you know, walk us through kind of the significance of that from a political perspective. Its going to keep this battle raging. This is, above all, at this point a political fight playing out between the white house and congress that is coming up. We know that nancy pelosi raised the bar very high on impeachment. Unless something brand new and really groundbreaking comes out of this report, thats likely not going to be the result. We know from rearview mirrooberm attorney general barrs summary there will not be charges. So this is a fight over information and its the democrats in the house are going to be using their subpoena power, all of their powers, their ability to see the sensitive information, to press for the release of this as much, not just the report, but the underlying evidence and the white house has made it pretty much their stance is that they are going to fight it. First they said, you know, let it all out. Now they say they are going to fight it. I think what we will learn tomorrow is how which side or where exactly attorney general barr is. Is he going to release something that is a lot of information, minimal redactions, only keeping to those four categories, or are we going to get pages and pages of blacked outlines which gives the impression that he is siding more with the white house and trying to protect the president and keep this information secret and force the democrats to fight harder to get it. Betsy, how much of this is going to be a battle simply of the quickest response . I think when we had the barr summary, you had a little bit of that, right. The white house was quick out of the gate to say, no obstruction, no collusion. It kind of took everybody a minute to step back and say hold on a second. This specifically says he has not been exonerated of obstruction. Is that what were looking at another round of tomorrow . I think its fairly safe to predict that people might journal the gun on this thing. I think some people might be a little quick on the draw. The reality is this document is hundreds of pages long. The redactions may make it harder to understand the gist of certain components of the document. And at the end of the day there is probably going to be something for everybody to like in some ways. Its likely it will be something of a rorschach test. People will be able to kind of find the portions that they find helpful to their political ends and highlight those portions. As reporters, the project and the goal for tomorrow especially for people on the Justice Department beat like i am is to separate what the document actually says from the crazy ridiculous over the top noise that we can expect from both sides. A very optimistic assessment. Thank you all. Im sure we will see you, if not later today, then tomorrow. New reaction from mayor Pete Buttigieg on facing antigay and antiabortion hecklers on the campaign trail in iowa. Thats coming up next. Gn trail a thats coming up next. Children in urgent need. Buttigieg is in iowa this week, his first trip to the Hawkeye State since officially entering the to 2020 race. Today his Campaign Held two events after a packed town hall last night. The campaign had expected about 50 people to attend, but more than 1,600 actually showed up. The venue was reportedly so crowded it was standing room only. A sign that the indiana mayors popularity is on the rise. But buttigiegs iowa stump hasnt come without its challenges. Earlier today protesters showed up at a house party the Campaign Held in marshalltown. Those same protesters heckled buttigieg at events held last night where they targeted his stance on abortion and his sexuality. And as somebody very much enjoying the first year of married life, i would say freedom is at stake and the idea of whether a county clerk gets to tell you who you out to marry. Speaking of things, hello again. Speaking of things that are at stake that do not belong to a single Political Party our marriage exists by the fras of a single vote on the u. S. Supreme court. On this tenth anniversary of iowa breaking ground in that regard, i would like to say thank you. We got it. Promise you, we got it. Moments ago nbcs Josh Letterman spoke to buttigieg about those attacks. It must affect you emotionally to have people ridiculing your marriage, saying obscene things about your husband. Does it get to you . The things that get to me is when somebody makes a critique of a decision i made or something i said and i feel they may be right. When i had a policy i could have done better and they are making a valid criticism of that. When you are getting some kind of hateful attack, in some ways its easier to lay aside. When you have 1,000 or 2,000 people to cheer you on and a few there for a different reasons, thats just politics. Thats how it works. The next president will have to deal with tougher things than being interrupted. Reporter do you fear for your safety on the campaign trail . You know, i have a lot of confidence in the security arrangements that we have. I also have a lot of confidence in the american people. And i think politics brings out the good, bad, and ugly, and the weird, and that just happens. Joining me is Nbc News National Political reporter Josh Letterman. Also sam stein. Former Senior Advisor to jeb bush and former spokesman for John Boehner Michael steele and the director of progressive programming at siriusxm zerlina maxwell. Thank you all for being here. Josh, we just saw a little bit of that new interview that you did with the mayor. What more did you guys talk about . Well, we also asked him whether he thinks that america is ready for a gay president. Aside from the hecklers, a recent nbc wall street journal poll showed 32 of the company is not ready to have a gay president. At least thats what they say. He says that, you know, we have made a lot of progress. There is only one way to find out whether or not the country is ready, and thats to put it to the test on the ballot box. We also are got some of the first comments about the measles situation thats been taking place in new york. He is always on the campaign trail talking about rnting peoples religious beliefs. To the point where it doesnt harm other people. So we asked him, do you think that we should mandate that people have to vaccinate their children for the measles and other illnesses despite their, you know, religious beliefs . He said essentially this is a Public Health issue and that we have to find a way to hold parents accountable for the risks that they put other children at if they dont vaccinate their children. Very interesting line of questioning, josh. Great interview. Sam, im curious your take on how buttigieg handled these attacks, first of all. Also, interesting sort of set of answers he gave josh there, you know. Kind of another version of this attempting to gracefully brush off what were nasty attacks from somebody who has been in many ways a professional protester for decades. If the protesters were hoping to diminish them, they ba backfired. If anything, this endaers him to a democratic electorate. It created a news moment, not something that Pete Buttigieg needed me more. We are now again talking about him. And i think to the degree that he, it was almost like a layup for him. This is obviously something that he is prepared for. He has thought about it. You couldnt ask for a better foil in terms of the people attacking you on this stuff. It is a reminder, of course, our biases against lgbt Americans Still exist, that even with the tremendous progress that we have made in the country, the fact that 32 of the country says they could not conceive of voting for sundomeone because o their sexuality is a remarkable and sobering statistic. While we have been watching his rise politically in awe because it happened so fast, it is a reminder of some of the op stacles. Josh mentioned 32 people say they are not ready. Does a candidacy like his we have all certainly felt there has been a dramatic sea change in attitudes towards lbgt people. Could this put that to the test . Look, we have made more progress on these issues in the last ten years than the previous 5,000 or. So its not surprising there is still work to be done. Its not surprising there are ugly bumps along the way. I think in general having this model of a healthy successful gay marriage in the spotlight is good for this conversation in america and hopefully will help continue to make progress along that continuum. Zerlina maxwell, what did you make of how mayor pete handled these instances . Obviously, we have a range of women and minority candidates running this time around. So he is certainly not the only one who has to grapple with dealing with stereotypes. I think he handled it with all class. I think that we are going to see a number of protests, antiabortion protesters are going to show up at events throughout this primary. I have no doubt. So i think its a test for democrats, including mayor pete, about how they can handle that type of direct adversity. But i do have to say, im glad he is in the race. I am glad he is talking about faith because i was raised by two pastors. So while i am a progressive feminist, i have often debated folks who are citing the bible and shouting out sodom and gomara. I push back and say, listen, if jesus is so great, why werent you nicer, kinder, more fair and kind to your neighbor and to your fellow human beings . Jesus needs new pr. I had that line growing up because, honestly, i think what mayor pete is doing is he is zem srating how to actually be a christian, to embrace people, be more compassionate. I think thats an example. Th crosses partisan boundaries. We talked about how he burst on to the spoot light here. A lot of that has to do with how he handles this type of moment we have been talking about. He has answered many, many tough questions in interviews, and has impressed a lot of people. Zerlina, some of the date that Steve Kornacki is looking at and David Axlerod has made this point, that it seems his support is liberal, perhaps higher income, and mostly white. Whats your sense of whether he can appeal to, you know, what really is i mean, the most important constituency in the democratic primary is African American women. I think any candidate can appeal to African American women. What were listening for is specifics. If you are running for president and you are not telling us how you are going to solve problems like the high rates of Maternal Death and other issues like Racial Injustice and mass incarceration, but also education and health care, if you arent telling us how you are going to fix the problem, we are probably going it move on to the next candidate who is articulating those policy solutions. Black women are vsavvy voters. We actually vote on the issues and more than one issue. Its not just one issue, thats the deal breaker. So i think that any candidate, including mayor pete, have an opportunity to sway that portion of the electorate. I will tell you that reputation is also important. So while it is sobering to hear such a few percentage of people say they would be ready for a gay president , we havent had a woman either. There are a lot of americans who voted basically to say were not ready for a woman president because 13 , surprisingly 13 of black men voted for donald trumtrump in 2016. So these are still issues we are very much dealing with and grappling with on all fronts. A very good point. Quickly, as we wrap up, sam and mike, i want to talk about the president s latest obsession, which seems to be Bernie Sanders and fox news. He apparently viewed, watched, one of those 2. 55 Million People that reportedly watched the fox news town hall with Bernie Sanders. These are a series of tweets that he put out calling him crazy bernie. He also says he looks forward to whoever he may be running against. May god rest their soul. Mike, do you think he is threatened by Bernie Sanders . I think he is threatened by Bernie Sanders certainly. I think he is threatened by the enthusiasm. We have to divide pox opinifox and news. There are great journalists but also fairly right. He doesnt like seeing Bernie Sanders on his note work. Sam . He clearly views the world in a dichotomy. You are on team trump or youre not. And so what the weird part the most illustrate i have interesting part is when he referred to fox as we. The assumption is their program should be geared around promoting him. It must have been frightening to have a democratic nominee on and have the audience for that town hall be supportive of Bernie Sanders on some of his progressive platforms. Cheering him on. If its about getting under the president s skin, Bernie Sanders certainly did that. Josh letterman, great interview. Sam stein, michael steele, zerlina maxwell, thank you for your insights today. Coming up next, rising from the ashes. We are live in paris where efforts have begun to rebield the iconic notre dame cathedral. [woman] with my shark, i deep clean messes like this. This and even this. But i dont have to clean this, because the selfcleaning brush roll removes hair, while i clean. [announcer] shark, the vacuum that deep cleans, now cleans itself. [ bell ringing ] cathedrals across france rang their bells today for notre dame saluting its profound loss and hopeful restoration. French president Emmanuel Macron vowed yesterday to restore notre dame, quote, even more beautifully within five years. But even with over one billion euros donated, architects from all over the world invited to redesign the iconic spire, the question remains whether five years is really realistic. Joining me from paris, msnbc Senior Correspondent chris jansing. You have been reporting tirelessly on this. I know you spoke with the u. S. Ambassador to france earlier today. Reporter yes. One of the questions for people, is five years feasible . I think the answer is its ambitious at best. Even the rector of the church, people along the soo iene, he said it would take six years. People are saying why would you rush it . We need to take time. Be careful. French officials told us today they think it will be two years before they even have a plan in place. So i asked the u. S. Ambassador, a business woman, former coowner of the l. A. Dodgers, do you think from your background, business experience, five years is realistic . Heres what jamie mccort told me. We are talking about what we think the best thing should be. As said, i think that we really have to wait for a little while to see where all of it is going. There is so much involved right now just in protecting it, and then of course there will be all the thoughts about restoration and what can happen. There is just so much. The dust has to settle. Reporter yeah, the dust has to settle. One small idea. The stones outside there, they are going to be looking at them. As they try to replace the ones that are damaged, should they be hand finished or machine finished . Time, money, the way it looks, all of those things go into just that one decision. So you can see why there is some skepticism about that fiveyear timeline that macron put out there yesterday, kasie. Yeah. I hadnt thought about any of that. Chris, i wanted to ask you about this New York Times report that talked a little bit about how this fire got started. They wrote about the attic of notre dame, which they said was known as the forrest, and it burned like one. Some of the elements to prevent fire, like fire walls or a sprinkler system, were absent by choice so as not to alter the design or introduce electrical wiring deemed a greater risk. Are people saying, secondguessing this decision now . Reporter absolutely. They always knew that was going to be a problem. They knew the danger that was there. They weighed those risks. So, look, you have Something Like 1,300 basically huge trees. The size of the trees that were used in that structure, they dont even exist anymore. They dont have trees that old. They are not just 850 years old like the cathedral. They had been in place for two or 300 years. When they rebuild it they are never going to be able to exactly replicate the way it was. So i think its fire air to say there will be a stateoftheart fire retardant system, whether that involves sprinklers or fire walls. Look, france has, and certainly paris has, a reputation for taking iconic buildings and adding new elements to them. Think of the chinese american architect who build that pyramid, thcontroversial at the time, outside of the louvre. So, again, all of these decisions that will have to be made about how this is going to look, how its going to be done. One thing for sure. They are going to be looking carefully at the dangers that were presented by those very old pieces of timber. For sure. Msnbcs chris jansing. Thank you as always, my friend. Kuch next, to vaccinate or not to vaccinate . Believe it or not thats a hyperpartisan question across america. But why . . N across america. But why . Z. I felt i couldnt be at my best wifor my family. C, in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured and left those doubts behind. I faced reminders of my hep c every day. But in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured. Even hanging with friends i worried about my hep c. But in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured. Mavyret is the only 8week cure for all common types of hep c. Before starting mavyret your doctor will test if youve had hepatitis b which may flare up and cause serious liver problems during and after treatment. Tell your doctor if youve had hepatitis b, a liver or kidney transplant, other liver problems, hiv1, or other medical conditions, and all medicines you take including herbal supplements. Dont take mavyret with atazanavir or rifampin, or if youve had certain liver problems. Common side effects include headache and tiredness. With hep c behind me, i feel free. Fearless. And theres no looking back, because i am cured. Talk to your doctor about mavyret. The worst Measles Outbreak is it of the worst Measles Outbreak since the disease was eradicated in 2010. It hit 20 states and all 555 cases have been reported in the u. S. The health skries hcrisis spurr makers to act. Colorado, new york, washington and maine have made it harder for parents to opt out of vaccinations for their children. In these instances political counterparts not only raised opposition to the legislation but actively worked to expand vaccine exemptions. According to politico, republicans portray themselves as equally enthusiastic about the lifesaving virtues of vaccines and many diminish the right of parental control over their childrens bodies and yield that power to the government. Joining me now, adviser to health care rodney mccoy and Senior Correspondent jonathan cone, and also the author of sick the untold story of Americas Health care crisis and the people who may pay the price. Thank you both are being here. This story, theres so much to talk about here. How does this become a partisan issue . It seems as though there are people on the right and the left of this issue, if you listen to parents saying they dont want to vaccinate their kids, some of them are referred to as the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote they are often white collegeeducated whole food moms. Im not convinced that its true within Rural Communities youre seeing a fear among parents that these vaccines are causing autisms and these other myths that are not supported at all by the evidence. So theres fear out there. I feel bad for the politicians. You hope the politicians would all stand for vaccination but these parents, when they get convinced that these vaccines are harmful, get really angry if put the full weight of the government upon them. So its a tough situation. I feel like the solution is more trying to solve it at the community level, convince people at the Community Levels these vaccines are important for their kids. Avic, i understand the libertarian argument they dont want sa seed power to the government but at what point do their rights conflict with the rights of everybody who wants to send their kids to School Without getting sick . I totally agree with you. We call this externals, youre not allowed to get your neighbors children sick with the measles. That is why weve always had laws at the state level in particular around requiring vaccinations and those laws are totally appropriate and i think it is appropriate also to look at these exemptions and make sure that the exemptions are narrow and really tailored for true needs of exemption rather than just creating loopholes that allow people to void vaccinations and put other children at risk. Jonathan cone, weigh in on this. The america i grew up in as a kid, i never even realized thises with optional in some places. Theres a long tradition of being required to get vaccines in school. And its been bipartisan mostly. Interestingly, when i think of the last two years, whos been one of the most outspoken champions of vaccines and defending them is actually scott gottlieb, who was the Trump Administration official in charge of the food and drug administration. Over in the senate if you listen, bill cassidy, very conservative republican senator from louisiana, very much in favor of vaccines. And both of them are doctors and thats not a coincidence. I think they understand the scientific consensus, which is overwhelming on this point, that there really is no link between vaccines and autism or the other problems that you hear about. So there is this support for it. But we do see this fear cropping up for a variety of reasons. I do think, i agree with him on the left and right in these communities, want to be sympathetic to the communities. I think theres fear the best possible remedy is to have this bipartisan consensus to make people understand vax ooeccines not just safe but an essential tool for Public Health. Lets just underscore that because there are no known links between known vaccines and autism. And part of the challenge here is with social media. There have been several Major Technology companies that have had to reckon with antivaccination content on their platforms. Pinterest, for example, took down all vaccinerelated content. Whats the obligation of the Tech Companies to prevent this kind of misinformation from spreading in your view . I think responsible media outlets, responsible people in charge of communication, should take seriously their responsibility to put out Accurate Information and not to give a platform to inAccurate Information. Look, the institute of medicine, which is the most reliable we have, they looked at this as carefully as possible. They found no link and at some point you have to trust that. Hopefully that message gets out. Avik and jonathan kone, go blue, by the way. I like that emblem. When youre confident in your gut, you feel confident to take on anything. What would you like the power to do . One more thing before we go, this week Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leading a congressional delegation to britain and ireland. These delegations tend to focus on counterterrorism and intelligence sharing. But this time around in the words of pelosi herself, talks are all about brexit, brexit, brexit. This week she asserted the importance of maintaining the irish peace accord and while speaking to parliament in dublin, she referred something else, her love for u2, with bono and his wife sitting just feet away. I take pride in saying im one of the members of congress whos been to more than u2 concerts than anyone. Now hes in the audience. Thank you, thank you for being here. Give my regards to the rest of the group. But something i learned from my children, from michael and my grandchildren, i usually do not intrude on the music of my children. That does not apply to u2. My best to edge and everyone else in u2. It is a beautiful day. Dont let it get away. Thats going to wrap things up this hour. Im kasie hunt here in washington. Katy, thank you ve kasie, thank you very much. Were beginning the hour with breaking news. The woman that prompted a massive manhunt is dead. Authorities found her with a selfinflicted gunshot wound. She had a fascination with the column line massacre, and ahead of the tragic shooting three days from now, more than 20 denver area schools were closed earlier today. Heard from the executive director of security and management at the Jefferson County schools. When this threat came in, were used to threats, frankly, at cull olumbine. This one felt different and was different and certainly had our attention. Columbine continues to attract people from around the world. And if i have any message, were not a place to come visit if youre not a children. She was first reported missing monday night. Agents realized the woman boarded a plane to
