Renewed identity. In fact at times he stoked it. He announced he wanted to ban muslims . Late 2018 and he followed through with it when he became president. He infamously said they are fine people marching alongside n neonaz neonazis. For some reason, he had a hard time doing something the vast majority of us than the rest of us do, condemning david duke. Will you condemn david duke . I dont know anything about david duke. I dont know anything about what you are talking about with the white supremacist or supremacy. There is a problem with the words that come out of Donald Trumps mouth. Anyone whos denying it is denying reality. The problem is bigger than him, it was here before him and it will be hereafter him. The u. S. Have had an issue with White Supremacists since its founding and committing mass murders. The olympic park bombing and the Oklahoma City bombing, the shooting at a sixtemple in oak creek wisconsin and charleston, South Carolina all fuelled by a belief that white is right. It is getting worse. According to the antidefamation link, the fbi and department of homeland security, there has been a resurgence of these movements. White supremacist propaganda increased events in 2018. Wh joining me now National Security and justice reporter Julie Ainsley and our New York Times and msnbc political contributor Brett Stevens and our former fbi and special agent, jeffery wrinkle. Julie, to you, why is supremacists being treated the same way as islamic . Research radicalization, that includes on domestic terrorism. There are universities across the country using these fundings to answer various questions. It is trickling to the side of preventions. Like we saw under the Obama Administration. There were grants that went out that would have gone to North Carolina university to look into neonazis, that was gutted. It has not been refunded. Any program or other program looks at white nationalism. We saw it drastically slow down across both kinds of terrorism for an domestic. It will not be refunded after july of 2019 when two years of funding will run out. Why is that julia . Thats a good question. It is not in the president s current budget. It is not clear if they have a big route to go. The fear is that they would use this funding and specifically to go out islamic extremism. There was a thought of changing the office to countering islamicism. A lot of people worried about that. What we found is benign and neglect. A lot of these agencies were not using it for funding. As a result, we are seeing a pull back. Some of these efforts even under the Obama Administration were criticized. The aclu was worried counter violence extremism to prevent measures when you use u. S. Attorney offices to going after the wrong people. It is not these preventative efforts been seen as silver bullets to the problem. They are now drying up. What is the heart of the issue here . Why is something as focused on islamic extremism . I mean we had mass murder committed by white nationalists in this country for decade going back to the Oklahoma City bo bombing. Why was it neglected . It is interesting when you look at the law. We have a law to pursue international terrorism. We have al law that defines domestic terrorism. There is really no penalty under terrorism. If you look at all people thats arrested, they have all been charged for gun violations or some other charge because there is really no domestic terrorism charge. Why is it hard to differentiate what we are seeing overseas and what we are seeing at home . Just going to say, the law was rewritten, if the government would put their priority and shifted for a domestic terrorism, thatll enable Law Enforcement and federal and state and locals to concentrate more efforts and money and assets to Work Together and address it as a National Policy. The nature of terrorism in some ways have changed. There is a logic when you think of state terrorism from alqaida or isis, these are larger organizations. They organize and plot abroad. What we have seen in the last ten or so years is sort of a self actualized terrorist. The lone wolf terrorist whether it is the killer in orlando or the one at christchurch. Other white nationalists we should mention pittsburgh. Yes, thats one of the huge ones. We didnt mean to leave it out. And we have norwich. All of these guys sort of act on their own, as they join a worldwide web of white nationalists, theyre beginning more like in the sense acting on their own. Everyone if they an if they as lone wolf. They are finding that kinship and support online. How do you penetrate that world . If you dont treat it as a group even if it is an unorganized group, do you have a hard time stopping things . You can see the fbi through joint task force with local and state Law Enforcement, theyre able to develop trip wires that can help to identify International Terrorists before those terrorists hack. If we do the same thing on the domestic terrorism side which requires federal laws to enable Law Enforcement to use the same techniques. Lets talk about the rise though. This is a problem for decades. I dont want to say donald trump is at fault for all of this. It was there before he was president or after hes president. There has been a rise in this sentiment of this white supre supremacy online and attack and abroad. How much does our leadership, how much do we blame our leadership or hold our leadership responsible for the words they use . It is extremely important that we do. They set a tone obviously, donald trump, was not responsible for what happened in christchurch but he created a tone in the country where immigrants are being demonized and others in shole countries and muslims are being singled out for travel bans and are being seen as a kind of threat to the fabric of society. All of that is stuff this he brought with him, it was cr crystallized. The reason of charlottesville is so horrific is because you crystallized and you play that clip of you have no idea of who david duke is. He was at the reform party around the 2000s. He knew what he was doing when he started. Donald trump is refusing to admit it is a problem. He was asked about it today and he said the opposite. He does not think it is a problem at all, listen. When mexico sends its people, theyre not sending their best. Theyre bringing drugs, crimes, and rapists and some i assume are good people. I am a negotiator like you folks. Do you want to renegotiate deals . Thats not the krcorrect thi. Here is what he said today. I think it is a small group of people that have serious, serious problems. He said that on friday. A small group of people with serious problems, i guess. Hes not addressing it and refusing to do so, doug, what does it do . It sends a message to these groups that they have a ally in the white house. Over the course of his presidency and before his presidency, a lot of these white na National Groups feel like they have a Kindred Spirit in donald trump. Hes proven that in terms of how he wants to kick and condemn david duke and how he handled and botched the charlottesville response. A lot of this has to do with his rhetoric. Hes constantly talking about mexicans invading this country. His whole campaign for the midterm of 2018 was about a caravan invading this country. I think it creates a sense of fear and paranoia among a lot of supporters and that leads to things very violent things. He is incapable of condemning these folks partially because theyre part of his base. How much do the fbi ability to investigate it and terrorism being made and identify those who could poses a threat. There was a report earlier this year that donald trump wanted to focus on counter extremism only for islamic states. Only on islam and not on anything here domestically having to do with white extremism. How much does donald trump added towards it and affecting the policy. That was in the beginning of this administration when they thought this could be used in that way. There are new priorities here. Funding is everything for this, katy. This means people you are able to take from the Justice Department and dhs and intelligence places to do Counter Terrorism prevention work and Counter Intelligence work on domestic terror groups. This will gut them if they dont have the funding to do that. We know it is depleted on the prevention side. The stuff beyond funding is the law. So we have been discussing is really the fact that you cant be charged with materials support to a group like the kkk as if you can be charged for a group of term support with isis. It is not set up that way. It is not the way our laws work. Until Congress Changes that, we can domestic groups. But supporting terrorism which is how you get a lot of these charges from people in the u. S. Who are supporting groups like isis, they cant do that on the same level which also keeps them from monitoring them in the same way. Jeffery, final word. I would like to echo that sentiment of what i have said before. The law does not give Law Enforcement agencies everything they can use as the same with international materialite terro. There is coordination with our foreign partners. Right now most of the domestic terrorism is the state or local level or fbi had a lot of success but it is all individual offices. Is that putting us at risk . Yes, we need to have a National Policy to address it so at the hierarchy and other agencies can come out with a plan that well use throughout the country. Brett stephens. Julia ainsley and doug, you will stay with us. Up next, beto orourke he breaks the bank, how much does money matter . The president is attacking john mccain again. How low can he go . There is no evidence john mccain leaked the steele dossier through the media. He was only aware of the document after the elections of 2016 and mccain forwarded to the fbi which already had it. Mccains daughter, Meghan Mccain criticized the president today on the view. He spends the weekend obsessing over being a great man and i know it and you all know it that hell never be a great man. My father is hiskryptonite in life. Why does he have such a problem with john mccain, was it because he served in vietnam and the president did not. Where did it stem from . Above my pay grade but katy, this is something that has bothered him and the vietnam service. Every time the president is tweeting, hes telegraphing a lot of his insecurities oftentimes and the mccain tweet falls into that. Perhaps it is the anniversary of mccain being released in prison in vietnam. It could be anxiety of the Mueller Report thats coming and analyzing of why donald trump is a little more difficult at times but this is pretty obvious. John mccain was frustrated and he was not welcome at mccains funeral. He betrays a lot of frustration and anxiety this week tweeting more than 30 times. There is a feeling that when donald trump goes on these tweet streaks or he goes after john mccain, there is a feeling of whats new, he has been doing this. How much lower can he go and why do we have to talk about it . Is this really news since he does it all the time . But, i got to talk to a producer telling me that it is news and that it is important to point out when the president is going after a dead war hero. Talk to me about what it does in the larger sentence of things and what it does to our opinion of leadership and president ial leadership . For the conservative slogan from 67 years ago. Ideas have consequences and rhetoric have consequences. What president s say have consequences. We say president ial tweets like you, thats kind of difference but it is not different. It gets millions and millions of readers and tens of millions who hears about it and whats reprinted and broadcasted on the radio and so forth. He has the able to change peoples opinion to falsehoods and slanders and smear people through his rhetoric. It is important to counter act the lies or important to disagree with him. It is important as a bit of a window in to his psychological stage. Hes not a guy getting a lot of interviews. He likes the speech to a mass audience, the classic and sort of authortarian format. People have said to me over and over his tweets are as a ru vul. You know maybe this shows hes not stable and he does not have a psychological state to be trusted as president especially of the additional for years. Republicans are not going to acknowledge that they were not right to vote for him than Hillary Clinton and reversing his positions on a bunch of policy issues. They may say okay, we dodged the bullet here and we got away with some things and he was not terrible. But, four more years of a person thats completely unhinged, i think thats a different problem. Why john mccain and why are we hearing from republican lawmakers, this is too much. You have gone so far. It is not president ial but it is not decent. A decent human being would not do it. Going back to psychoanalysis. Hes pretty good out there on trump. I am really shokd cked by that. This was a man who was a senator and had colleagues in the senate and he ran for the president and supported by zillions of republicans and campaigned to a million of people and friendly to them. It would be nice of a few more and not just meghan and his daughter speaking. Wait a second and said it publicly or privately. Do we think well call the white house, mr. President you are going a bit too far for me. That is big deal. Thats my question and thats what i wonder. Eli, what is he doing during the weekend . There was no golf yesterday and he stayed in washington and it was a little chilly. That was part of the reasons why there were so many tweets yesterday. The impact on this, republicans will try to lobby this president and try to move him on policies and trying to negotiate about an emergency vote but on this stuff, they never really stepped to him, Lindsey Graham tweeted something kind about john mccain but he did not make it about the president. You saw the main account for the Republican National committee this weekend tweeting insensitive racially and ethically insensitive of beto orourke showing him in a leprechaun hat and a lot of republicans were upset about that. That was the main twitter account for the party. You can see the effect that trump has had for the discourse which is all about trolling and it is not about. Eli and phil, thank you. Beto orourke is doing pretty well. Hes leading the fund raising totals of the first 24 hours of his campaign of 6. 1 million. Hes ahead of Bernie Sanders of 5. 9 million. You may ask why does money matter . Why are we paying attention to us . It gives you an idea of the candidates long jeevity not on the money they have to do business campaigning but to get on tv as well. One fund raising still waits in the wing. Joe biden has not yet announced. He may accidentally teased his all but certain run with a slip of the tongue over the weekend. I have the most progressive record of anybody who would run whoops. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced her committee hopes to reinvigorate her bid by making her run official. Shes out with a new campaign video. She sits down with chris hayes on all in. Joining me now is garret haake and back with me doug cornell and bill crystal. Beto orourke is an inspiration or beto is a policymaker . Reporter you laid out that timeline in the iowa votes or the nation votes. Thats where we were this morning. We are working on this Great American road trip, hes starting out in five states that voted for donald trump in 2016 and the mission was particularly interesting because it was one of the most diverse crowds i have seen him speak to. This was the last stop we are able to check out in detroit. For both stops that i was at this morning, he was asked about gun control of a universal background checks and he wants to band on assault weapons. He has been thematic and talking about uniting the country and a big theme. He was asked a lot of questions about identity, how does he as a white man of considerable privilege relating to american voters. How does he understand their experience and how does he defend them in an era of donald trump and of this increasingly heated and nasty rhetoric for president trump. Orourke pushed back on that a little bit. He addressed the criticism of donald trump. He was direct of his extra credcred criticism. He continues to steer back to what hes trying to do. It is clear that he does not want to be dragged down into the mud of the president. Lets keep our eyes on the prize, our ambitions and our goals which i hope will be defined and healthcare and every job pays a living wage. We pay our Public School educators and squarely facing the challenge of focus climate chain. In order to achieve those things, all of us will have to come together. Thats a good encapsulation of what it is like to be an orourke event. What he laid out there are goals and not specifics. It is interesting watching him pick up things as we go along talking less about texas and more about the things hes learning from voters in iowa and michigan and wisconsin as we work our way across the country. Let me read a portion of betbet beto. Orourkes entrance into the president ial race unleashed a wave of scynisism. It was that iowan hs had seen mh orour orourke skepticism but a lot of them did not care. I have laid them all out and i got how you paid for them and i have got papers left and right. Right, Elizabeth Warren has been the pace setter on issues. Beto, i think these first few weeks a lot of it is going to be about his authenticity and vision and his charisma and about him bringing people together. Hes going to have to fill in the blanks though and have a robust policy solutions to a lot of the challenges that we face. Thats something that the democrat democratic electorateing looking for him to answer for. His biggest concerns from his campaign was the vibe he was getting out there to as many different places as he could. And also the fund raising numbers because he is known as a prolific fundraiser from what he did against ted cruz where he raised over 30 million in a quarter. It is porpt fimportant that he t sort of 24 hours period and he did with a little more than 6 million. That was an important thing for him. He had to deal with some misused that occurred during the vanity fair interview he did and a couple of things that happened on the trail this week. Voters are going to look to him filling in the policy blanks relatively soon. I wonder whos going to win over those wishywashy voters. Bill, is it going to be one of the more moderate democrats try to gain those voters, Kristen Gillibrand will tell you that she turns red county blue and appealed across the isle. Is there somebody in the democratic field so far, or pete buttegieg. People who voted for trump was for republicans. Republicans won the house and the Percentage Points and lost by 9 . Who were those people . You know what districts they live in . I think it will be important for the democrats to nominate who could hold those voters. A lot of them were in swing states, those states democrats did well in including the mid western states and wisconsin and pennsylvania and other states like North Carolina. Arizona, so i think thats the right question. Biden is an obvious candidate to win those voter support. I think some of the younger and more moderate, honestly, i think they avoid scaring a lot of voters. The policy difference are not that great between i dont think. Joe biden and buttegieg and beto. Donald Trump Reminds us character matters a lot and for democrats, it matters a lot. It is something we cannot no ahead of time so thats why we have campaigns. With that small dollar donation for the most part, a couple hundred thousands of people went online and gave money to beto, thatspretty impressive. Thank you very much gentlemen. Next up, remembering those loss in new zealand. Im really into this car, but how do i know if im getting a good deal . The death toll in new zealand is now at 50. We are learning more about those who died. The 71 years old, he was the greeter at the mosque, nabi. And alibaba was a 25 years old business student who was killed two months shy of graduation and the youngest victim of just three years old. Joining me now is suhe webb, thank you for joining us here. Tell me why you are the one telling the story of the new zealand victims. Why is it such a global trauma . On friday, i saw 49 headlines humanizing the shooter. I dont care about this guy and i dont want to know his name. There is life in knowing Trevor Martins Favorite Book and there is a child that does not have a dollar in america. There is life in understanding our jewish brothers and sisters whose cemeteries have been violated. There is great life in that history. I began to collect the names and pictures of the victims. I found out my friend is really doing a great job of it and shawn king, none of us have this idea that we are trying to amplify the story of the victims and humanize and illustrate the pain and as well as the hope that comes out of this tragedy. What do you do . I have been in contact with the family members. My questions are like what kind of people are these and how are they at home as husband or children . Her husband uses a wheelchair and she saves a group of children, runs back in looking for her husband and is killed. Shes an incredible human being. He seeks for religious freedom. His story is an immigration seeking for freedom and living in a democracy and hes murdered. Getting that side of the story by who these people were. By focusing on the victims and not the killer. Do you think that helps the worldcom b world combat that sort of extremism and by taking them out of the context of muslims or taking them out of the context of immigrants and putting them and humanizing them and telling stories of who they were and taking off the labels. Do you think that helps resolves some of the issues, resolves some of the hate . I think it creates a moment of collective restored justice. I think many of us feels that since the election that all of us are somehow being targeted by irresponsible rhetoric. Muslims across the globe says this is really therapeutic, seeing the empathy from people. Tell me about one conversation you had over the weekend with the boy. That was the toughest one. That was the one i said to my wife that i need to stop a little bit. His story is really hard to digest as a young person. In my teenage year, i lost my friend to gun violence. But nothing like ashraf. He lost his best friend and family. His response to me was i am going to be a better person. I am not going to allow this to control me although i am hurting and i am wounded but i am really, really feeling the pain of this but i am trying to dig into the lives of these three people as inspiration to live above hatred and the bigotry thats out there. I was out in new york city this weekend and i noticed cop cars by mosques and there are cop cars by synagogues routinely and after the charleston attack, there were cop cars by churches. Do you feel safe going to a house of worship . It seems like you are not safe anywhere now, does not matter what religion you may be of. I think since 9 11, the Community General sense, at least the community that i serve is one of a community that suspected of a fifth column or a community that could go into a sudden jihadist syndrome. Now it is like everyone in the communities having an experience to work at school and ton streets. There is a sense of being unsettled as we go into our house of worship. When children are asking why are there are armed policemen in front of church. But this started under obama surrounding our mosques. And even atheists who came out and said this is insane. It has been like when is this going to happen, being a muslim in america or the west living in the cellar and hoping the storm will pass. Lets hope talking about the victims and telling their stories just helps cut into that in some way and cut into that hatred. Imam, thank you so much. We appreciate you helping us telling those stories, well be right back. Tech at safelite autoglass, we really pride ourselves on making it easy to get your windshield fixed. Kids whoa kids vo safelite repair, safelite replace it has been one week seance boeing plane crashed in ethiopia. Now federal prosecutors are asking questioning. A grand jury in washington dc issued ed a subpoena last week. The grand jury reportedly wants related documents including or respondents, emails, and other messages. Meanwhile back in 2015 when the plane was first being certified, faa managers pushed their safety engineers to assess it. What the boeing submitted was reportedly a safety analysis with several crucial flaws. But the plane was still determined safe to fly. Adjou adjourning me is andrew tangle, what are they looking for . It is not clear yet. Theyre looking for documents related to the 737 aircraft. Subsequent to this is the suspecter General Department of transportations inquiry asking for people affiliated with this process, and this project, to maintain documents and so forth, but there are questions emerged about how it was developed, how it was certified, how the training was developed, and how it was devised. Things of that nature that were also asking. Is the implication here that while it was being certified certain thing were being overlooked or they were amassed over to quickly get this plane in the air . Im sure that is something they will be looking at. It was competing with the air bus at the time, they wanted new planes and they had a decision to either develop a new single aisle care craft, or a knew fuel efficient engine, adjusting the aircraft to fit that engine, or something else. They chose to reengineer the aircraft and what came of this project was the 737. And we heard once that was the path taken, as we reported some people on the inside of the factory felt some pressure and a healthy sense of urgency. It is really a brutal business. What about deciding whether or not their own plane was safe. How much weight do they have in the faa . That is an emerging question, too. The nature of the oversight, too. It is property of the broader process. The faa is responsible for the certification of the aircraft, the training, and the processes socialed with that. That is a key question that they are looking at or congress is which is preparing to hold hearings on this whole process. Andrew tangle, thank you so much. Well be right back. I should have cared more about ending gun violence in other places, so the first thing i did when i became a senator was met with names that lost their family members to gun violence. And when you meet a parent whose child was lost to gun violence. So when you talk about your change on this, youre saying you were convinced through talking o individuals that you should change your mind. Yes, i didnt think beyond the needs and the priorities of those i represented, we all have a responsibility to end gun violence. We value to take on the corruption and greed that the nra represents.
