Youre fighting for borders in other countries and they dont want to fight the democrats for the border of our country. I dont know if youre aware of whats happening. We want to have strong borders in the United States. The democrats dont want to let us have strong borders. Only for one reason, you know why . Because i want it. Absent from the president s visit, a coherent vision for the future of u. S. Military policy and involvement in the middle east. So much to get to. Hallie, lets talk about the uniqueness of what we saw yesterday. How unusual it is for a president to go overseas and not just overseas to a military base in war zone and bring partisan domestic politics into it. Reporter and blast the other side of the aisle as the president did when talking about nancy pelosi calling the shots. How democrats do not want border security. Something the democrats already today have taking exception with. This is an opportunity for commanders in chief to go to these combat zones to talk to troops. To have a moment of you can say bipartisan or nonpartisanship but to say the president would do so on this trip would be to overlook what we have seen from the president before. Thats not coming down one way or the other on it. Blasted the news media in mozambiqthose moments. Wle leaders of this country have not done that. Why it may not have been out of character for President Trump, himself, it wasnt the typical conventional way that we see president s act when theyre in a war zone. The president did and the first lady make overtures to the troops. Signed autographs. Took sell ffies with people who wa wanted them. When you tuk talk to former members of the military, they say it wasnt totally appropriate to bring that up in such a way. All the pictures we saw, we like to see. You want to see the commander in chief going, seeing the members on the grofront lines day in an day out. Theyre taking the selfies. They gave him the standing ovation as they have in the past. Were these attacks appropriate . These attacks were not appropriate. Ive never heard any other commander in chief when he goes abroad talking naked partisan terms about his domestic opponents in the United States. After all, its the United States congress that passed the pay rise and democrats and republicans pass that pay rise. The United States congress and the people of the United States were supporting our armed forces. They dont belong to him. They belong to the people of the United States. It will be much more appropriate if he would show respect for the constitution and the way were structured as opposed to making everything a political statement on his behalf. We heard the attacks but did we hear any vision from middle east policy other than how some other country can handle it or the fact that were spending too much money on countries that nobody has ever heard of . This was really a political rally in front of troops in iraq. This was a president who likes to talk about winning. Who likes to talk about americas role in the world. We did hear some Foreign Policy. He talked about saudi arabia and hes happy with investment they are making the try to fight isis in syria. He talked about the president of turkey. We heard the president lacing this with falsehoods. He talked about the fact it had been ten years since servicemen and women got pay raise. We know thats false. Every year they have been getting pay raises. You have a president lying to people who could know quickly he was not telling the truth because they can see their paychecks every year. I think we not only have tuk abo talk about the political a sesp is he took a lap around and lace in there some falsehoods. I think that raised a lot of eyebrows when the president made his false claim about military pay raises. Here is what he said. You just got one of the biggest pay raises youve ever received unless you dont want it. Plenty of people that came up and said we could make it smaller. We could make it 3 . We could make it 2 . We could make it 4 . I said no. Make it 10 . Make it more than 10 . Its been a long time. Its been more than 10 years. Lets just fact check this. He says you got 10 more, first pay raise in more than ten years. Theyre going to get a 2. 6 raise for 2019 after a 2. 4 raise for 2018. They get raises every year. Hes told this lie before. Does he think that the men and women who wear uniforms, theyre making so much money and got so much in the bank they dont even know what theyre paycheck is. Well, its more of a matter of fact the president of the United States doesnt care whether or not his lies or lack of facts are going over well with the troops or anybody else. Sadly, one of the ways in which President Trump is similar to other president s is that he doesnt seem to have a problem lying to the troops or using them as convenient partisan and political pawns. This president is doing it in a particularly selfobsessed and trumpian way. When i talk to veteran advoca advocateadvocate e s, what they care about more is the lack of substantive policy progress during the trump era. The president had promised on the campaign. For instance, rick wideman who was one of the cofounders of vietnam vet raerans of america d he was in a meeting with the president where he discussed issues that had to do with ptsd and health affects of agent orange. The president of the United States lied to his face and said thats been taken care of and bizarrely, abruptly derailed the meeting to get into a weird argument with him and the other veterans about the movie apocalypse now. Theres a lot of terrain that hasnt been covered by this president. Lets look at what he did say yesterday. We had already known he was going to withdraw troops from syria, half the troops in afghanistan. He said were keeping troops here in iraq. Reporter the president s vision is a vision where the u. S. , in the president s word, is not acting as a policeman orr the rest of the world. The potential to draw down troops there, not iraq. Thats a key part of how the president sees the region. Others stepping in to fill the void, if you will. Once the United States steps out. There are those in the Foreign Policy world who will say thats a huge mistake for a variety of reasons. Like it or not thats the president s position. I think thats one thing. Another is his comment about what iraq will be used for moving forward once the troops do draw out of syria. That is in the president s words, as a kind of base from which to fight isis. You have military experts who say wait a second. That doesnt work. Thats not going to work. Theres been serious gains made against isis in syria but not totally. What are we doing to help our allies left there. There are question marks about what the president s strategy is. He did lay out where he wants to be and one final thing, you also saw a really clear picture into the president s thinking as it relates to the top defense and military officials around him. You went on a rift where he talked about his generals. He said they kept asking for six months and another six months and another six months. The president said i told them no more months left. Wereleaving. He does have information at his fingertips that he knows what is best as commander in chief and he will make those decisions even if it means overriding what the vast majority of his add vier advisers, that he picked, is telling him what to do. The president claims every one wants to be his next secretary of defense. I want to play that for you. I will say that ive got everybody, everybody and his uncle wants that position. By the way, everybody and her aunt, just so i wont be criticized for that last statement. Everybody wants that position. Everybody. Everybody. So many people want to be who wouldnt want to be secretary of defense. Well, general, youre plugged into that community. Ill let you answer that question. Who wouldnt want to be secretary of defense . I think theres a lot of people who are qualified who would not want to be secretary of defense you should donald trump. For the simple reason they cant agree with the policy. His direction is clear. He doesnt believe in american leadership. He says he supports Nato Alliance but he doesnt help lead them. He may know best about when its time to come back and he has been there. The president has every right to make the decision. If youre not sure what the consequences will be, its not effective leadership. For people who are qualified to be secretary of defense, they know what big organizations are like. They dont operate this way. This is not a Family Office in is not the real estate business. This is not bluffing an opponent to get a cheaper price on a lot. Youre dealing with life and death. This is not the way to run it. Im sure there are people who want to be there with President Trump. I hope there are. Most of the people i know who have serious reservations about the policy and style of leadership. This is a president who would want to take more guidance or at least information from military leaders having not served in the military himself. I want to end with a question about the New York Times story. They talked to a daughters of a deceased podiatrist who said their dad gave trump be bone st spurs diagnosis. The doctor rented space and one daughter said, quote, i know it was a favor. There are caveats. The doctor didnt leave any medical records to corroborate the second. A second doctor might have been involved and the New York Times says the daughters say they are not fans of mr. Trump. No comment from the white house. I mean what do we make of this claim. You believe in previous administrations this story would have blown up but is there no accountability in this administration for Something Like this . Well especially on Something Like this since especially since the start of Donald Trumps political rise i think we as media and a Political Class and also perhaps even the general American Public have gotten used to the president lying or dodging about his record when it came not just to the vietnam war but his opposition or support for the iraq war. This is another dodge. This is something that trump and his team can probably expect to be quiet about for a long time. Also, look, there was a hypocrisy element that people called the president out on and have been doing so since the 2016 campaign. Its not that its a fatal flaw that he wouldnt want to fight in a war like vietnam. Hes not been straightforward about the privileges that he took advantage of as a rich kid to get out of it and doesnt seem to have much empathy when it comes to people who did serve. A lot of whom who didnt have a choice. He would not be the only person who used some of his connections to get a deferment. Having said that, he said it wasnt a big deal. Thank you all. Appreciate it. Still ahead, breaking news. Tracking todays rocky wide on wall street. Yesterday we got this historic surge in the dow. Today not so much. Were back with the ongoing breaking news on wall street which is giving investors major case of whiplash. The markets plunging again today. Right now you can see that the dow is near its lowest point of the day. 590 down. Thats after surging nearly 1100 points yesterday. It single largest one day point gain ever. The broader markets are tumbling. The s p is down. The nasdaq is down. You see numbers there. S p down 67. Nasdaq 211. Those of those saw the biggest gains in nearly a decade yesterday. Joining me is the u. S. Editor of the financial times. Brandon, good to see you. I lets start with the basic question. What is heck is going on . There are a bunch of broad things going on. Anybody who tells you they know whats going on with the s p 500 on any given day is trying to steal your money. Broadly what we know is when the Federal Reserve loosens monetary policy, it inflates asset values. The value of your stock portfolio grows. When they remove that support the values shrink again. The value of your house goes down. This is a broad thing that is happening. More specifically right now one of the things that we know from businesses across the u. S. Is that their input costs are going up. What that means is that wages are going up. Thats a good thing for almost all americans. That tariffs are increased the price of some goods they used to make. Inflation isnt going up at the same time. If you have input costs not going up and inflation not going up, someone gets squeezed in the middle. Where is that reflected . Its reflected in the stock market. Broadly taken it kind of makes sense that stocks, which we knew have been overvalued for a long time now, are starting to come closer back down. Even if we knew that, we dont have to like it. Theres something around half of americans who are invested in the stock market via 401 k and they aring loe looking and seeii going to have to work a couple of extra years. If you talk to money managers, especially in middle america. Not talking about the people with millions of dollars in the stock market but people who want to retire comfortably. They will tell you theyir phon are ringing off the hook with frantic people. We know the advice is always hold tight. This is one of those things. What do you say . Only 14 of people own stocks or households outside of their 401 k plans. If we look at those plans, what were looking at is by the time someone is between 55 and 65, the median value is 80,000. The panic is not because the stock market is failing to out perform. Maybe 80,000 is not enough to retire on even if you come from a tiny little town in the midwest, as i do. Having said that if you have a pension and thats a cushion for you, 80,000 might not seem like a lot to somebody who has been used to getting a six figure salary but for the average american, that could be a couple of years wages that they put aside that makes them feel a little bit comfortable. Thats right. You have to understand the panic in what do they do. Very specifically, whats going nonthe last several weeks is uncertainty. On top of all the longer term trends we have been talking about, investors and markets dont like not knowing whats going on. A lot of things that have been coming out of white house regardless of whether you agree or disagree, we dont know what they are doing on daytoday basis. That makes people jittery. The end of that uncertainty could make a difference. Thats something to hope for. One of the things we can agree on is all of us should put away a little more money. Give up the new pair of shoes. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. Thank you. Day six. No sign this partial Government Shutdown will end quickly. On one side a Defiant Congress lives. The other, a defiant white house and the president. Both of them keeping federal workers in limbo. Well track it for you, next. Well track it for you, next kayla our dad was in the hospital. Today marks day six of Government Shutdown and the deep divisions over funding the president s border wall has only gotten wider. The president took to twitter early to demand a deal suggesting that thousands of federal workers who have been furloughed are mostly democrats. Senator mark warner called the president s tweet outrageous. Federal employees dont go to work wearing red or blue jerseys and the president is treating them like poker chips at one of his failed cascasinos. Were hearing from those americans feeling the brunts. Using the hashtag shutdown stories. Many have taken to twitter to share fears about not knowing when the next paycheck is coming. A single mom of three says she doesnt know if shell be able to pay her rent or feed her family next week. Another woman was forced to terminate her husbands care giver to save money. One disabled veteran said he cant get final approval for a surgery due to a shutdown. So, mike, no votes today. Has there been any movement that we know of . Thats nothing going on that we know of. It would could be behind the sc negotiations but nothing that we know of. He said no end in sight to the president s goth shutdown. Hooets ta hes taken our government hostage over a border wall that would be wasteful and ineffective. The president s staked his reputation. He is standing with his conservative base on this wall. Getting 5 billion or less than that for construction in this spending bill before the government can reopen. This wall that the president want s quote, unquote immoral. How do you go along with any part of that. What we know is the senate and the house will be in at 4 00. We dont expect any business. Leaders on both sides have said they would give their members 24hour notice to come back to washington to vote on something, to reopen the government. Theres no deal in the offing at this point if thats the indication. Were in a Holding Pattern as the government remains partially closed. Accord iing to play book theres been no progress in reopening 25 of the government. The players involved are convinced it will not get solved until january. The president s allies say he is standing pat. The gop leadership does not believe it will get a new deal until the new congress. What are the republican options if this does stretch past january 3rd is when democrats take control of the house . I think right now a lot of republicans are still sort of frustrated that theres no clear leadership from the president on this shutdown. We have heard from several republican who is said theres no strategy and the difficulty is theres a whole contingent of Congressional Republicans who sort of fear the Government Shutdown itself more than they fear upsetting Republican Voters and the president s base. For them, they become this huge obstacle to the president where it makes it difficult for republicans and the entire Republican Party to colease around one message, one approach, one strategy to this shutdown. They have yet to do that. While there is all this chaos in the party with no clear leadership from the president. All hes doing is aggravated both sides with these morning tweets. Were not seeing any progress. We dont know whether or not theres any direct negotiations happening between President Trump and Democratic Congressional leaders. Ive been told its been left to the aides on both sides to negotiate this shutdown and thats not even happening at this point. This does seem like it will be prolonged even further and could come to a point where nancy pelosi gets control of the house. Puts forward a bill and then it falls for republicans to determine whether or not they are willing to go back to a clean cr in order to reopen the government. Were starting to hear shutdown stories. They are heartbreaking. One twitter user said quote, single mom. Single income. If my pay from the last two week shows up, i have enough to pay bills but not buy food. We live direct deposit to direct deposit. Something vital is always breaking. Car breaks, stove. Nothing goes until this is over. I mean, do stories like that put any pressure on members of congress at all . Its not like, by the way r, al these federal employees live in washington. They are spread out in many parts of the country. Reporter right. Democrats will not give an inch. If anybody will give, its not going to be the democrats. As we were just talking about, thats when democrats take over the white house. Thats the fist drst day of the congress. They will pass that spending bill to reopen the government. It remains to be seen whether senate can do it and even bigger whether the president will sign it. The 800,000 people directly affected, the office of Personnel Management sent out a tweet today with some suggested language that federal employees who are directly affected could send to their creditors whether its their landlord, Mortgage Bankers saying the suggested language is basically saying give me break until the government reopens. Then the opm suggesting they cant give legal advice but perhaps you can consult your person attorney if you do need legal advice which is sort of hard to manage a lot of these folks at how much per hour. That was kind of an irony. The clocks ticking. The special counsel investigation. Where does it stand . Where is it going and when could it wrap up . President trumps tv attorney, Rudy Giuliani, has some thoughts that you just have to hear. Thats next. Just have to hear thats next. As a fitness junkie, i customize everything bike, wheels, saddle. Thats why i switched to liberty mutual. They customized my insurance, so i only pay for what i need. I insured my car, and my bike. My calves are custom too, but i cant insure those. Which is a crying shame. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. So we improved everything. We used 50 fewer ingredients added one handed pumps and beat the top Safety Standards the new johnsons® choose gentle just in case anybody out there has forgotten the mueller investigation, his attorney, Rudy Giuliani, brought it up this morning. Here he is in an interview with the hills the rising. Talking about what he sees as the absurdity of probe. Then they moved onto campaign contributions. Thats a civil violation. The theory they are using was discredited in the edwards case. Then they are looking at business things that happened years ago or the moscow thing which is perfectly legal. Pretty soon they will start looking at parking tickets. Did he pay them all . Lets bring in jennifer ruben, Barbara Mcquaid is former u. S. Attorney and msnbc contributor. Jennifer, at this point, what value to the president s defense team is Rudy Giuliani . Zero. He is speaking a mishmash of untruths, legal distortions. He is out there to reassure the base and to say helpful things that make trump feel better. He says things that incriminate him. When he said russia discussions were going on up through november of 2016. He really is irrelevant. I think americans should feel comfortable knowing that he is a tv clown and what matters now are the facts and the law. What matters is what evidence mueller and the Southern District of new york have. What matters is the laws that are on the books. Rudy giuliani saying something is an important law or not an important law is irrelevant. As we saw in the flynn case, we saw in Michael Cohen case, were talking about serious crimes that involve jail time. Hes not going to get out of this by sending Rudy Giuliani out to talk to sean hannity and say stupid things. Glen, to talk about those serious things. One thing hes right about, theres a lot of tentacles. Theres overlapping investigations from federal prosecutors and new york state. New york ag is investigating the trump foundation. What kind of entanglements could this create for the president , for his Business Organization . Can you separate any of this really . Theres so many tentacles and i think they will all become intertwined. Its all going to come home to roost. We see the attorney general from new york who has all but taken down the trump foundation. It looks indistinguishable from the trump organization. In the grand jury which is where bob mueller and his team have been for well over a year now. Every time were in the grand jury investigating and were questioning witnesses and were reviewing documents, its entirely usual that we come upon other criminal threads that we as prosecutors must sort of pull on and follow. I know were all anxious, the American Public is anxious for mueller to move toward a conclusion but i can envision them going down all these different sort of criminal threads that they come upon and they have to follow them. They have to be thorough and they have to do an overarching job. It may be that we still have quite a way ahead of us until this begins to reach its conclusion. Its interesting exactly to that point, theres been so much speculation that the Mueller Probe might be neerg aring its conclusion but as the paper points out, stories reporting that the special counsel was nearing the end of his investigation has been around for more than a year which is half as long as hes been conducting the investigation. Eventually, they will be right. Can anyone outside of mueller and his inner circle really know where the investigation is at this point . No. I know that mueller and his inner circle could tell you when the investigation will end. I think theres some people in whose best interest it is to suggest the investigation will end soon because they can suggest its dragging out. The average special counsel investigation has lasted three years. I know from cases that i prosecuted in my office supervised, sometimes they can go on for quite some time. You dont know where it ends. Every time you invest one of your last witnesses, they may tell you about five other people that you decide you need to interview. Its difficult to know when the end comes. We know theres still a number of things that have not seen the light of day. I think jerome corsi has revealed hes likely to be indicted. Roger stone faces a high hike y likelihood of indictment. All after those will take several months to play out. I dont know that its imminent but no doubt were moving and progressing and advancing. When it will end is anybodys guess. Its not just Rudy Giuliani who is saying things that are not true. Donald trump has a troubled relationship with the truth. Hes made 7500 plus false or misleading claims during his term. Now there seems to be a question about the credibility of his acting attorney general. The wall street general says whittaker i correncorrectly cla multiple times that he was an academic all american. He had a lower level honor. Maybe its an honest mistake. The white house hadnt talked about this. Does this go under the category of much a do about nothing or would it have been a big something except its in the Trump Administration . Its resume fraud. If he were applying for a job at a junior attorney, his resume would go in the circular filing cabinet and he would be ineligible for hire. Barbara, is that right . The worst thing you can do at the Justice Department is to lie. Minor indiscretions can be forgiven in you come clean but lying and who is bragging falsely, is something that is likely to not get you a second interview. Back to the politics of it, jennifer, would there be any consequences . In a normal appointment, of course, it would go to the senate. This is exactly the kind of thing that would come out as well as the details of the company that was eventually shut down for fraudulent operations that he apparently was well aware of and was acting as their attorney. Lots of things would have come out in a vetting process. Thats one of the reasons you dont do what we have seen done here. Appoint someone who has never been confirmed out of senate out of chain of command at the Justice Department. Put in this exceptionally powerful important position at an exceptionally sensitive time. Thats why so many have been concerned from a instituticonst perspective and the Justice Departments credibility. Its a revered part of the federal government. It has reputations in court, around the world, amongst attorneys. To see that level of trust and stature diminished by someone like Matthew Whittaker is heartbreaking. What a great panel. Governor jerry brown just gave the go ahead for new dna testing. 35 years after kevin cooper was put behind bars for murder. Investigators said the convicted burglar climbed through a hole in a prison fence before butchering a local family with a knife, an ice pick and an ax, stabbing their parents, 10yearold and her friend 143 times. The d. A. Said there is dna proof that cooper was inside the home, even smoked cigarettes in their Station Wagon and before his blood was found on a tshirt outside, but the son who survived the attack says cooper was not the it killer and now that tshirt could set him free because, according to coopers attorney, the blood on it, along with some other evidence, was planted. Joining me now, New York Times columnist nicholas christoff, who has been following the case for years. Ive been following your writing on this. You have done such a deep dive. For people who have not been following the case, tell us what you believe make the strongest case that prosecutors may have put the wrong guy in prison here . For starters it was kind of implausible that one guy, a 120pound intruder, would be able to overpower these four people, including doug ryan, a 62 former marine and juggling three weapons to commit these murders. Meanwhile several witnesses saw three white people steal ryans car after the killing. The blood that was that i believe was planted on this tshirt, it contained not only kevin coopers blood but it contained a blood preservative that you would find in a test tube if you put that blood in. Sure enough, the sheriffs deputies had taken a vial of coopers blood and put this preservative in it and so it was clear that it came from a test tube and not cooper himself. I want to play what he told us. That blood is not from me. It did not match me. It had somebody elses dna in it. Whatever was on that wall that they collected was that original killers blood but they put my blood in that container and thats why youve got two dnas in there. Hes right. And he was not a violent offender. Thats right. What happened was initially they had eyewitness reports, sole survivor likewise attributed it to three white people they didnt immediately find any white perpetrators. Meanwhile, they discovered that this young black man, kevin cooper, had escaped from a minimum security prison and had holed up in a home very near the victims residence. I think they thought okay, he was probably the one who did it. They were frustrated because they couldnt find fer onsic evidence linking him to the crime scene and so they planted it. And then at that point is it racism . Is it politics . What do you think went on here . I think there was certainly an element of racism in that they saw his image and staurio type of what kind of person could have committed this murder. And it was also really shoddy police work, and the San Bernardino county Sheriffs Office was kind of a cowboy place. The sheriff himself was later convicted of stealing 500 guns from the evidence room. Another was convicted of stealing evidence from the evidence room. And a woman meanwhile called the Sheriffs Office and said that her boyfriend had committed the murders and she handed over his bloody coveralls that he had come home with that night. What did the Sheriffs Office do with that . They threw those coveralls away. I want to get your take on what the chances are that he could be released. Look, im sure you get plenty of letters from people in prison. Certainly when i was in local news, i got everybody was innocent, right . They needed help in getting out of prison. This is a case where, in spite of appeal after appeal after appeal where he has not had an opportunity to really prove his innocence, people like you have stuck with it. Is this different this time . Well, well find out. Well be able to do the testing. I believe that he was framed. A bunch of federal judges believe he was framed. President of the American Bar Association believes he has been framed and for decades he has tried to do that testing and jerry brown for 12 years, as attorney general and as governor until now has refused. Kamala harris as attorney general refused. Although now she is very much in favor of testing. Well find out the truth and i hope truth and justice will prevail, chris. Wouldnt that be a good thing, especially in this season . Its shocking, right, to see the pictures of him at the time of his arrest and now and how much of his life has gone behind bars. The truth is important. Lets just say that again. Nick kristof, thats for what you do day after day. Happy new year. Thank you, chris. Happy new year. A break ahead but next what will it take to end this Government Shutdown . A House Democrat will join me.
