He didnt just build it up himself. Much of that money, according to the report was actually obtained through fraudulent means and sometimes on the backs of Senior Citizens living in rent stabilized housing. Trumps tax return is in the building. Its incredible that we have it. That opened the door to understand a huge transfer of wealth and gave us so much more information to be able to understand the tax games that were played. A cordi President Trump part in dubious tax schemes during the 19990s including instances of outright fraud that greatly increased the fortune he received from his parents. He received the equivalent today of at least 413 million from his fathers reality empire starting when he was a toddler and continuing to this day. In order to hide money from the irs, the trumps repeatedly undervalued the worth of their properties and when fred trump senior, Donald Trumps dad was close to death, they launched an elaborate scheme to escape estate tacxes and gift tacks tht created Fake Companies that filtered to his children without penalties. Be trump appear to have done more than exploit legal loopholes. The contact represented a pattern of deception about the value of trumps real estate. At the white house briefing, Sarah Huckabee sanders called this New York Times report, very boring. I will say one thing the article did get right was it showed the president s father had a great deal of confidence in him. The president brought his father into a lot of deals and made a lot of money together. So much so his father went onto say everything he touched turn to gold. What might we find in President Trumps taxes. Ashley is an msnbc political analyst. Russ, i want to start with you. The depth of this reporting is astonishing. Remind us how this all began. It was because somebody mailed a tax return to your colleagues. I guess it was a couple of steps for us. That was the first one, probably. Right before the election in 2016. The first two or three pages of Donald Trumps 1995 tax return. It just showed up in mailbox. We figured out he declared almost a billion dollars in business losses that he used to write off other income sources. Rachel maddow got another portion in 2005. Despiting writing off that massive amount of debt, suddenly he was making more than 100 million. That was a big transition. We came interested in money from his father. What the major take aways. Donald trumps version of his life story is hes entirely selfmade. He got a small lope an of a miln dollars that he paid back with interest. That was funmy on its own but its untrue. His father was paying him significant sums of money from the time he was three years old. By time he was teenager he was a multimillionaire. He started giving him buildings when he was 16. Right after he turned 17 years old. And he bailed him out. Sarah sanders is said fred trump so believed h any son as a businessman. He so believed in his son as part of a tax avoidance operation. Thats the reason hef was givin him the money. It wasnt a small loan. In the 1980s and before, donald trump was gifted the gold mine of a massive new york, brooklyn and Queens Real Estate portfolio. Anyone who would be given new york City Real Estate like that, would, should and be worth at least 10 billion bucks today. Instead, he squandered it and scanned scammed it. All he had to do was sit on it and he would be an icon, a titan today. When you talk about the bankruptcies that would on the first glance have sunk him during the 90s, in reality fred trump wads fls flowing the mone im. He was never on the precipice of utter devastation. What to do out to it seems to me not the shattering of this myth. What to do out for me is how they did this and on whose backs they did it. The overt fraud was county Building Supply andmaintenance. All countys purpose was to be the purchasing agent to fred trumps buildings. It did no such thing. All counties siphoned millions of dollars by marking up purchases made by his employees. Those millions, untaxed gifts rn, flowed to owners. Fred trump used the padded county receipts to justify rend increases for thousands of tenants. They were low and middle income tenants. Thousands of them were getting rent increases, 20 , 50 higher so a little more money could flow into donald trump and his siblings pockets. Its not a luxury given to people who dont have the sort of lawyers and schemers. All rich people dont do this. Last week you were buying it from bobby. This week youre buying it from me. Its going to cost you 20 more. Were going to use that to raise rent. The irs seems to be, if most people dont file their taxes correctly, they get awe didded and fined. What was happening with the irs here. Not really. We think the irs comes after you but when you have the trump empire and its this complicated, given the backlog and amount of work people who have simpler irs returns to try to hide something or not pay patheir taxes, peopl of lower means. If youre writing out a room in your house as an office, the irs might look and see if thats all youre using it for. Its really hard to follow. The irs has been out gunned on this for years. People push the limits knowing the chance of getting audited is minuscule. If you do, the irs cant go deep into it. They dont have the means or manpower to gout after guys as complicated situations as this. This about Paul Manafort. He would be a free man on a boat wearing an ostrich jacket right now had he not got in trouble. Hallie is that you laughing . Im thinking of Paul Manafort on a boat in an ostrich jacket. He was trying to speak like a populist. Somebody who would protect the little guy. He was wealthy enough to pay the tacks. It didnt bother him. It seems clear he knew he wasnt going to pay the taxes because he had schemes that the money would disappear. He ran on repealing the estate tax. From this reporting it seems clear why he wanted to rerepeal the estate tax. He based his entire brand, the reason people knew him was because of his apprentice and his books. We know tvs misleit was is lead taj rating. It was central to how people viewed candidate trump and now President Trump. Frm fri frs frfrds they are not taking exception with certain facts in the piece. They with certain facts in the piece with certain facts in the piece. They are not taking action with what is defamatory. They are saying these are other people that were involved. It was his familys tax attorneys that are handling this. When you sign paper work for your tax, youre saying i can attest to everyone working on my behalf has concluded on my tax return. Youre still liable for it. Reporter when you talk about tax returns, that brings up point number two. You or anybody on the campaign knows, this story has raised questions. It just has about the president s more recent business dealings. Ashleys colleague at the post trying to get to that at the briefing today saying where are the president s tax returns. Its a question ive asked the president. Its a question youve asked. Its a question ashley has asked. He said i dont want to release them. He said the American People dont care. Thats not true. The most recent poll shows 67 of americans do want to see the taxes. Josh said, what about the 90s and early 2000s, are those still under audit. If they are still under audit, that seems problematic. If its taking the irs ten years to audit tax returns and if they are not, why not release them. Why cant we know more about his business dealings. If they want to prove its under audit, release a letter from the irs saying its under audit. They have done no such thing for the years weve been asking questions. For all those out there who might be screaming at televisions, when we call the irs as reporters, the irs legally cannot comment on anybodys tax returns. Somebody like donald trump, those tax returns are in a vault. Kellyanne conway said that issue has been litigated. They believe because they won the election, it doesnt have to be litigated. The majority of American Voters did not vote for donald trump. I think a lot of them would want to see the tax return. Ashley, not to keep you out in the cold for so long. I apologize for that. Lets talk about this myth he created for himself. The New York Times revelations. Does any of it matter to somebody who is supporting donald trump . Does any of it get through or is all of this the sort of thing that will get justified or ignored because they like the president. Thats always the question. Does anybody matter. A sort of creation story. A narrative myth and inception story. A personal bio that is crucial to their rise. Crucial to voters on the standing of them. If it turns out that is punctured. Let alone its punctured because the president , the candidate has opinion lying about it, its devastating. We dont know yet. One thing that is striking and this is not speaking to the moderate voters but within his base of support so far that hard core base. It seems like theres knob nothing to deter their mind. Anybody at the white house worried about this in. Yes and no. The president was clearly paying attention. . In. Yes and no. The president was clearly paying attention. In. Yes and no. The president was clearly paying attention. N. Yes and no. The president was clearly paying attention. Yes and no. The president was clearly paying attention. Yes and no. The president was clearly paying attention. Talking to people ntsinside the white house, its not their primary concern today. They are concerned about getting judge kavanaugh through and the way that will affect some of these republicans in november. This is your amazing reporting. What do you hope happens . I guess that he would hope theres a little more reality infused into the story of donald trump. When people want to make a decision about him and who he is, they look at his accomplishments through the appropriate prism of what really happened. He went out of his way to avoid taxes and claw his fathers wealth away if him. He he talks about my dad was too poor, it just doesnt mesh reality at all. Congratulations on the reporting. Congratulate your colleagues for us as well and congratulations on the escaping that room. Welcome to the lielght of th day. Its nice out here. Still to come, Robert Mueller. Remember him . Why his legal team is shrinking. T after the break, first he called dr. Ford credible. Then he mocked her. Do senators undecide on kavanaugh even care . N kavanaugh even care . And tiny. And this is lauras mobile dog grooming palace. Laura can clean up a retriever that rolled in foxtails, but shes not much on articles of organization. Articles of what . So, she turned to legalzoom. They helped me out. She means we helped with her llc, trademark, and a lot of other legal stuff thats a part of running a business. So laura can get back to the dogs. Would you sit still . This is lauras mobile dog grooming palace and this is where life meets legal. After weeks of relative restrai restraint, President Trump let loose at a rally. The president ended up mocking one of kavanaughs accusers. The first accuser, dr. Christine blasey ford on national tv all as the crowd around him cheered and laughed. 36 years ago this happened. I had one beer. I had one beer. You think it was one beer. Oh, good. How did you get home . I dont remember. How did you get there . No i dont remember. Where is the place . I dont remember. Indelible is the laughter. The uproarious laughter between the two and theyre having fun at my expense. This morning the president , i see it each time i go out to rallies. In order to help republican candidates. Voters are angry at the vicious and despicable way the democrats are tweeting Brett Kavanaugh. As the tension continues to rise on capitol hill, will his comments put his nominee in jeopardy . Does this matter to anybody . Susan collins, jeff flake. Reporter it doesnt help but it doesnt hurt. They look at this decision on kavanaugh as one that will ultimately go far beyond the presidency of donald trump. Kavanaugh could be on the court for 30 years. The president who nominates him is secondary to his qualifications. I dont think this necessarily helps Brett Kavanaugh but this is all about whats in that fbi investigation. I think thats the moment of truth here. What did mark judge and the other players say, thats how theyll vote. The president called her decent. Hes changed his tune. Kel Kellyanne Conway said she deserves to be heard. Now hes not being so generous. Shes been treated like a fabriege. Can you fill in her memory gaps, her factual inconsistencies. Thats part of the evidence gathering process in any hunt for truth. Those who are pretend they are searches for truth is already voting against. Let me do a fact check. This is on Sarah Huckabee sanders claiming the president was stating facts and not making fun. Trump said how many years ago, i dont know. She said it was probably the summer of 1982. He also said upstairs, downstairs, where was it . I dont know. She said it was upstairs across from a bathroom. I had one beer. Thats the only thing i remember. She remembers the attack she says happened more than anybody else. Not the details surrounding how she got there or how she left but that she had one beer and she was attacked by, she says, Brett Kavanaugh and mark judge. Betsy, what do can you think . Ive gathered Something Interesting from talking to republicans over the course of the morning who have been close to the confirmation process. This might sound extremely counter intuitive. Theres an emerging view that president s takes could in some surprising way provide cover to other republicans communicating the way Kelly Anne Conway did who have interested in going through the allegations that blasey ford raised and looking for ways to cast down on her allegations. The vast majority of republicans working on that are not foigoino do it in the manner the president is doing. They will look more serious and even handed as they are raising questions that would not be viewed as serious or legitimate if those questions were being brought up in contrast to the president being the president and talking about this in such a way. Fox news received letter claiming to be dr. Fords exboyfriend contradicting some of the statements she made. He says she knew how to prepare for a polygraph test. How is this being received on capitol hill . Reporter this is not even reaching the level of bubbling up into the discussion. I think in terms of key senator who is are watching here, they are much more tightly focused on dr. Fords account of this and on what these individual additional witnesses, particularly mark judge are going to say. The questions about how the poly graph was handled or this information got into the hands of democrats and things like that have fed the cable talk discussion on this. Plrl in the right but its not something ive heard brought up by any senator of either party. Guys, thank you very much. New concerns are emerging over what President Trump says will be aprehensive become ground investigation. Multiple sources are telling nbc news that the investigation remains significantly limited in scope and agents would most likely not be allowed to interview additional witnesses before the probe ends. This comes after 40 potential corroborators and potential witnesses have not been contacted. This includes more than 20 names of possible witnesses and multiple yale classmates who have contacted the fbi. As we have been reporting, two of kavanaughs accusers also have not been interviewed. We can confirm that the bureau has spoken with three people who were allegedly at the gathering where dr. Ford says kavanaugh assaulted her. Two of kavanaughs High School Classmates were interviewed with ramirez. The second accuser who says the judge exposed himself to her while a College Student at yale. Also federal former president er. Julia, first starting with you. What is your latest reporting show . A lot of these witness who is have tried to come forward have not been contacted by the fbi. Theres a reason for that. Its not lack of willingness on the part of the fbi. Its the white house. In other words to go any more beyond the witnesses they were allowed to first interview and the little bit beyond what they were expanded to on monday, they have to go to the white house for permission to ask who they can interview. To ask wa that tips to explore. They havent been given that permission because theyre not able to contact these people. We think this could be wrapped up today or even tomorrow because there are limited in who they can interview. I spoke to some people from fords legal team and they say nothing has changed. Theyve heard crickets from the fbi. They believe drc. Ford has much more to share with the fbi. Her own account as well as people who can corroborate more than she gave in that public testimony last week. Sdp youre reporting the bureau is concerned the constraints could damage the reputation. Whats Christopher Ray doinrish doing . He might be memorializing a lot of this. He is keeping conversations between the bore rureau and thee house. If the blame turns to the fbi, something on kavanaugh comes out layer, he can say i acted under the direction of the white house. Theres nothing more i could don this . Theres witnesses or corroborates that want to talk to the fbi but fbi is not allowed to talk to them. Its quite troubling. The fbi is not the president s police force. They are governed by rules called the attorney general guidelines and implemented through internal policy called the domestic investigations and operations guide. That makes very clear that fbi is allowed to accept information voluntarily provided. I was very troubled when i heard that witnesses were coming to the fbi and being turned away. We dont want a Background Investigation made up of witnesses who cannot provide information. This is a real test for the fbi because the integrity of the fbi is at stake. Already we have six background invest gigations that may not he uncovered this derogatory information. Now that we have this very truncated investigation that its not being done by the book is quite troubling. Theres also news about a letter that kavanaugh wrote about beach week to his High School Classmates. This is from 1983 and it warns the neighbors that were loud, obnoxious drunks advised them to go about 30 miles. Nobody is condemning Brett Kavanaugh for drinking ining i school. Nobody cares. Its the image that he portrayed in that hearing thats at odds with the image that he portrayed of himself in 1983. Does that matter to investigators . It matters to investigators. In his be careful, think also signed it bard. He knew full well that was his nickname. First, he did not tell the truth on Little Things in front of committee. They know that already. They do not need an fbi investigation to do that. My concern about the fbi investigation being limited is this. In addition to not getting the evidence, right, agents get this message this is supposed to be a limited whitewash investigation. Then they go out and interview mark judge. How aggressive and how serious do you think that interview will turn out to be when the message youre getting from up high is lets get this over with. Lets get this done. Lets just whitewash this and get this guy on the court. Is that a physical therapy assessmen Fair Assessment . I think when the agents are doing their job, they try to do it right. People at field offices are turning away witnesses. Theres reports people have tried to call into the duty agent and been told they wont accept that information. That, in my experience, is really unheard of. Good point. Thank you for your great reporting. Thank you very much. It may be 2018 but the president is already fixated on 2020. Thats next. On november 6, you will head to the polls, hopely, in one of the most important congressional roles in our lifetime. The only reason to vote democratic is if you are tired of winning. 34 days before the mid terms and President Trump is pitching what familiar winners and loser message to voters. For donald trump, this is not all about 2018 because 2020 is never far from his thoughts. Trump has been talking quite a bit about 2020. Not in terms of strategy or tactics but in disorganized, riffing way based of whatever or whomever is in the news. Charlie, what he said is this 2018 election was a referendum on him. Thats what the democrats have been saying. How does it help the republicans for the president to confirm it . Im sure some of the republicans cringed. In this case hes right about it. This election is about donald trump. Its a ref flexion of h refle dominance. Its not going to be decided by the stock market or nafta 2. 0. Its going to be a judgment by the American People on Donald Trumps presidency and whether or not they want a congress thats willing to be a check on his presidency. Usually its a resounding yes. 2018 feels up in the air. I think the predominant thinking is yes there will be a blue wave but theres a good sentiment of doubt that the laws of gravity will hold for 2018 when they didnt hold for 2016. I think a central issue is its donald trump. There isnt a Hillary Clinton or some other candidate for him to destroy. Hes trying to destroy democrats or attack democrats. Thats not the same as having a candidate. Its not a done deal. We have seen that in special elections so far. The house looks better and better in shape. The house will ensure that suburban women are engaged in this election. Hes trying to create a culture war. Its a question of whether that will shake out. Does the same 53 of women vote for donald trump . Weve had every that suburban women, College Educated women are swinging and swinging hard to the democratic party. Maybe they thought he wouldnt be this way in office and many are saying in the past week theres polls showing softening among republican women. I think hes trying to gin up men many this election. Well see. So far really rural voters havent been coming out in elections. I think he will try to do what he can. He has campaigned in all of the these races and you see much higher democratic turn out. Theres news on the democratic side that Michael Bloomberg has injected 20 more Million Dollars into the democratic senatorial campaign. That puts bloomberg up to 100 million total that hes donated to democrats this race. Hes focusing on the senate because bloomberg believes the senate is turnable. Theres a lot of these races that are on the razor eets edge whether youre talking about florida, arizona, nevada, indiana. eets edge whether youre talking about florida, arizona, nevada, indiana. S eets edge whether youre talking about florida, arizona, nevada, indiana. Eets edge whether youre talking about florida, arizona, nevada, indiana. Edge whether youre talking about florida, arizona, nevada, indiana. Doesnt the conversation were having now sound like this point in 2016 . It does. There are so many unknowns here. Yes, i do think theres going to be democratic gains. Again, the president is and the kavanaugh thing. The president wracking up some wins as you pointed out. Also, as mump as the kavanaugh hearings may be mobilizing democratic voters, i think people ought to be cognizant of the possibility that will mobilize Republican Voters as well as a backlash. I dont know how real thats going to be but i dont think we need to be conscious of that as o possibili as a possibility. I think youre right to say that. Its been more than 16 months since the start of the russia investigation, and this week there are new indications that Robert Mueller could be nearing the finish line. Why . Because his team is shrinking. Two government lawyers working for the special counsel are now going back to their jobs at the justice department. As politico reports the staffing changes comes amid signs that its entered a critical phase. Trump Campaign ChairmanPaul Manafort who pleaded guilty last month to avoid a trial met with his team monday as part of his cooperation agreement. Thank you for joining us. These two lawyers who have left, what did they specialize in and what does it mean that theyre gone . Well, they lost two people. Brandon, whoors part of the mueller prosecution team, he was there at that trial that feels like a million years ago but it was really just a month and a half ago in alexandria, verge. Hes gone back to the justice departments National Security division, which is where he previously worked. The other person who left is kyle freeny, a Money Laundering expert. She goes back to the division me worked at previously. The mueller team is now down to 13 senior prosecutors not including mueller himself. Theyre still very much full steam ahead. They were interviewing Paul Manafort as i reported on monday in his down town d. C. Office where i happened to capture one of the lead mueller lawyers o s outside with a couple of the manafort attorneys. What about the indications that this could mean that the Mueller Investigation is soon going to wrap up . Any chance itll be before the end of the year . I dont know about before the end of the year. I think were reading a lot of tea leaves here. I think im going into next year for sure into the wrapping up of this. Im going february on the office pool. Theres not an office pool, but im going to call february now. February might be a good bet. It really depends on a couple of key factors. Theres the interview with President Trump, whether that happens. Were talking about that was last thanksgiving this was going on. Those negotiations continue. Still no sign theres been any break through whether the president would sit down or would mueller push for a subpoena and a fight that would ultimately go before the supreme court. We have the roger stone investigation and the grand jury thats been meeting and interviewing a lot of people in roger stones orbit. If that case goes forward then we open up another can of worms and another criminal procedure with roger stone, if indeed mueller feels he has enough to indict one of Donald Trumps longest running political operatives. Someone whos known donald trump going back to the 80s. Youre right. Theres roger stone, theres what may or may not happen with Michael Cohen and his cooperation, theres Paul Manafort, what hes saying. And theres someone maybe from the trump family who could find themselves one of muellers targets. There are unanswered questions. Maybe we shouldnt read too much into two people leaving. Remember february, if it happens, i called it. Its a bird, its a plane, its the man who plays batman playing dick cheney. One more thing after the break. I cant tell you if the movie is good. All i can tell you is hol holy cow this morning i honestly thought Christian Bale was dick cheney. The cast looks good. Steve curel, amy adams. I can see the instinct to go down that rabbit hole and watch that on twitter given the rest of the news. Good to see you. Are you back today . Have a good rest of your day then. Im ali velshi. The president was stating the facts. Thats the explanation for the president s press secretary gave why he chose a Campaign Rally last night to seemingly mock Christine Blasey ford. The president was stating the facts, and frankly facts that were included in special prosecutor rachel mitchells report. He was stating facts that were given dr. Fords testimony. And the senate has to make a decision based on those facts and whether or not they see judge kavanaugh to be qualified to hold a position on the supreme court. Okay, you probably remember the testimony or youve probably seen clips of it. But to refresh your
