National Security Team leaked to the press. Its just the latest chapter in an ongoing saga thats seen trump show an unusual amount of deference to a leader who is barely more than a dictator. The big question were asking today, why does this president feel the way he does about Vladimir Putin . I think hes afraid of president of russia. The russians may have something on him personally that they could always roll out. What is the president thinking . Were congratulating him for hacking into americans voting . What hes demon london poisoning people with nerve gas, thats a criminal activity. I wouldnt have a conversation with a criminal. Theres substantial evidence that the election was a sham, substantial that there was gentlemen, watch out. And we shouldnt be congratulating that. If youre trying to hurt them, its because you dont agree with him, why are you still there . Its damaging. It was just over 24 hours ago that President Trump told reporters he spoke to putin and congratulated him on his reelection, that not many would describe as free or fair. Absent from that conversation, any talk about u. S. Election meddling. Were only months away from the 2018 midterms. Experts fully expect russia to interfere again. Trump also didnt bother to bring up let alone condemn the poisoning of a former russian spy and his daughter on british soil. All of th stands in stark contrast to how the president was ready for the call. Trump defied a specific warning from his own national Security Team when it came to putins reelection according to the Washington Post. The red flag they raised couldnt be more clear. Do not congratulate appeared in all caps in the president s briefing materials. And yet mr. Trump choose to ignore those talking points and others. Instead he touted the quote, very good call, and he said he expected to visit with putin soon. Lets break this down with our team of reporters and analysts. Kristen welker is at the white house. Ashley park from the Washington Post and msnbc political analyst. Eli stokols, matt mccollary, former white house chief of staff and the chairman of mcclattery associates, and affidavit priest a former cia as far as and author of the president s book of secretes. Thank you all. We have so much to talk about here. We are just learning about this information the post the questions reported on earlier. Do we know who leaked, and what do the advisers plan on doing about it . I think theyre trying to get to the bottom of it. I spoke to a source familiar with the matter who says john kelly is frustrated and deeply disappointed with the fact that this information was leaked out. We know that the president himself has criticized leakers sharply in the past. Heres one of his former tweets, for example, back from april saying the real story turns out to be surveillance, find the leakers. The president saying in february the fbi is unable to stop the National Security leakers. They have permeated our government for a long time. Of course, thats in reference to some other leaks, but i think the point remains the same which is that this is something that gets under the skin of this president and of his chief of staff. His chief of staff, by the way, when he was dhs secretary said last may that leaking is darn close to treason. I think theyre getting to the bottom of how this information leaked out. But the bottom line is that it did leak out. The president s been criticized by democrats and republicans who essentially say he was not confrontational enough in terms of raising the issue of russian meddling, in terms of raising the issue of those spies who were poisoned in the u. K. , and he shouldnt have grachltd him for an election that a lot of people saw it as a sham. Sarah sanders said during the briefing yesterday, look, its not up to this administration to weigh in on other countries elections, but the reality is theyve been sharply critical of other countries like venezuela, calling for free and Fair Elections there. Ashley parker, can i go to you on some of these behindthescenes questions that kristen was just talking about . The anger on the part of john kelly, how would you put that in context . Is this off the charts or somewhere in the middle . As you point out, this is the first thing that has leaked out of this white house, and i would be stunned if its the last thing. This is a president who proudly has a chaos management style, and when you manage in chaos and when you have people fighting amongst each other and people getting conflicting bits of information, it is not the sort of tight disciplined shipped weve seen in other administrations where leaks dont go out. I do have to say the white house is focused on the leak as sort of a little uninteresting to me in the sense that it feels like its a distraction from the substance of the story, which is pretty stark, which is that this president received briefings from his national Security Team that literally said do not congratulate inspect huge capital letters, and the first thing he did was to congratulate the russian president. And so this either means hes defying his team or hes not reading his briefing materials, which would also be troubling. To say the least. You mentioned the substance of this. We have a collection of the questions and answers from that briefing that Kristen Welker touched on a minute earlier. Sarah Huckabee Sanders yesterday in the briefing room, take a look. The president not raise the issue of Russian Election meddling in that phone call. I dont believe it came up on the specific call. Does the white house believe that the election in russia was free and fair . Look, in terms of the election, we dont get to dictate how other countries operate. The recent poisoning in the United Kingdom come up . I dont believe that was discussed in todays call. Why dont they believe thats something they should be discussing with the russian leader . I said it didnt come up on todays call. Theres a lot there. David priest, you were part of the cia. If my reading of history is correct, we actually have a long history of not only involving ourselves sometimes arguably to our detriment in whats going on in some other countries with their elections, but also of taking very public stands. The fact that this has all happened from russia including the poisoning in the u. K. And the meddling and the president doesnt bother to bring it up, thats disturbing. We dont know whats been raised through other channels. The process of feeding the president talking points for meetings typically goes through an september 11 a thoughtful process, not something done off the cuff. These points were presented to the president , not ordering him what to say, but telling him this is what fits in with our National Security strategy. And then he freelances. That raises a lot of questions. You were chief of staff, matt mclarty, how would you feel about the president you served going off the talking points in this way . Do you remember it happening when you were serving . If somebody leaked Something Like this, what would you expect the punishment for it to be . Its a lot to unpack here. Thats for sure. I feel like we say that constantly on this show. For good reason. First if the call was made, what was the message . Third, the process, which david alluded to. You asked about the process. Number one, president s to stray from their talking points, theres their pe but certainly if he deviated, at least everybody felt they had update in the process and were taken seriously. Thats whats the case is here. Every white house has had leaks, including ours, and i think whats particularly concerning about this is the leak on an issue this sensitive in a Foreign Policy issue of the utmost importance. Something that only a handful of people know. No question. It looked not vin dictatetive, but had a message to send to the president. We have a list where the president seems to sympathize with dictators or authoritarians. Kim jongun, saddam hussein, he killed terrorists. Bashar al assad in syria now getting an a in leadership in september of 2016. He said that. Heres egypt. Heres what he said about putin. He says great things about me, im going to say great things about him. What is what the president s interest with these dictators . What is the blind spot there . Thats the biggest question of all, thats a question we dont know the answer to. That may many b something that turns the key in the russia probe, why the president is so deferential to putin and russia. Is there a kompromat on him, if theres another reason why hes susceptible to basically blackmail. We see the pattern from the graphic you just put up about the president s respect for strong and then his disrespect for democraci for democracies. This is a feature, not a bug of this presidency. You can say it about this. This is what donald trump actually thinks, the way he views the world. Its a zerosum game, someone is winning, someone is losing and he believes people who often do terrible things to their own people are strong. And winning by default. And winning by default. Ashley parker, a question for you on the leak question from the serious policy side of it. Do you get the sense this is simply the typical staff infightii infighting . I will say there is a very wide universe of people who are involved in managing the fallout of this conversation and of this congratulations. But again, when you operate and taking aside the infighting, when you operate in chaos, which, again, is the president s preferred management style, its very hard to control anything. Its very hard to be a reliable negotiator with members of capitol hill. Its very hard to control who knows what. If truths or mistruths are coming out, and i think generally when this is your governing style, a lot of things lack the rigor and the discipline that the president would hope and that you would find in a typical administration. Were going to have to leave it there, Kristen Welker, matt mclarty, david priest. Next, all the president s women from a former porn star to a former playboy model and a contestant from the the apprentice. Can agreements to keep them quiet only amplify their stories . Now two women who said they had affairs with donald trump years ago are planning to tell their stories. Karen mcdougal is expected to have her first tv interview tomorrow night, her lawyer speaking this morning. Karen mcdowling had a actual relationship with donald trump for ten months. It was a romantic relationship. They were together very often. Mcdougal is suing the National Enquirers parent company. She says her nondisclosure agreement is invalid because the company her attorney misled her about the deal. Then sunday theres the anticipated 60 minut60 minutes interview with Stormy Daniels. She said technically i didnt sleep with the potus, there was no sleeping, i didnt go anywhere. A new york judge ruled in favor of former peanut contestant denying request for immunity because hes president. She says he groped her in 2007. The white house, president , and his lawyers denied all the allegations against him. Joining me now, katie fang is an attorney and legal analysis. Elise jordan, msnbc political analyst. Former director of progressive media for the Clinton Campaign and also an msnbc political analyst. Katy i want to start with you on the legal ramifications of the zervos case because they essentially said they can go ahead and go forward with this. The president doesnt get immunity by being president. Does this make the case different and can it be filled with land mines for the president . When you compare is cases, the one for summer zervos, shes speaking directly about donald trump. His lawyers tried to dismiss the lawsuit or stay the litigation. And a judge says no way, theres no claim of immunity that would protect you from having to face the consequences of this lawsuit. And so you actually have almost like a litmus test case. Its gone to a court, a jungle, and the judge said mr. Trump you have to face this litigation. However, lets be honest, theres an appellate process and we may not see him testify in a deposition anytime soon. But zervos won her day in court. I want to ask you about the Stormy Daniels situation in particular. This president has fought this behind the scenes pretty hard. And there have been a couple times where theyve essentially confirmed that hes involved in this in ways that they have been careful to avoid in other cases. Why is that and is the issue that her coming forward sets a potentially dangerous precedent . I think in Stormy Daniels, donald trump has met his match. She has shown herself to be critically media savvy, intelligent and strong Legal Counsel compared to donald trump who has relied on intimidation. You cant help be wonder if it is to intimidate here. Steve bannon recently also said that he wasnt denying any of the quotes that were in that book, so it makes you wonder what Michael Cohen fears is Stormy Daniels is allowed to speak. Absolutely. Elise, whats your view of how other republicans in the party should be approaching all of this . I have to tell you, it is one of the more awkward questions to ask republican members of congress in the hallway during the day. Should they be condemning this or telling the president what to do . I think no republican should condone it happen intimidation of a woman. She also has alleged she was physically threatened. Its unclear who physically threatened her but that should never be tolerated. You look at how trump voters have r responding to this. Just over the last week i was in mississippi conducting focus groups. Donald trumps strongest supporters saying we knew we werent electing a saint. We dont care what he does in his personal life as long as the policies he pursues are in line with our values. The stronger supporters might be with him, but you do see where other reluctant trump voters might be wavering a bit. Certithis president says he women and is the best for women. But we found his rating among collegeeducated white women dropped to 17 when he was inaugurated. Youre looking at an eightpoint drop in support among women. Twofold question, is this story with Stormy Daniels the main factor, and what does this mean for excitement among Democratic Women . Its a cull minimum nation of different fooksz. Everything that was alleged before the election is water under the bridge. He won the Electoral College. Thats factored in. I push back on that a bit. Donald trump won a very narrow election. He won the Electoral College with a combination of 80,000 votes over three different states that mattered in terms of the overall outcome. So that to me doesnt seem like the American People have decided that the allegations against him dont matter anymore. And we now are in the middle of a National Reckoning on the issue of harassment and assaults of women and were taking a moment i think donald trump was the catalyst to this shift in many ways. But were in a moment where were listening to and believing women. The democrats are a party in which we pushed al franken out of the senate. This was a very controversial decision in that moment, but i think having the moral high ground to say were cleaning our ranks. We dont want this type of behavior in our party, we are not total of this type of behavior, and neither are our voters, frankly. And i think that puts democrats in a position where they can argue and be believed that were the party that listens and believes women and we dont condone this type of behavior. Were expecting the Stormy Daniels interview to air as soon as this sunday on 60 minut60 m. What are the consequences of her of braking a nondisclosure agreement in this way . The president is demanding 20 million plus in damages. What is she really risking in telling her story . The case has been moved to federal court. We dont know whether it stace in court or arbitration. Shes looking at 1 million, and an allegation of 20 million other a breach. She can say what she wants to say on sunday and donald trump can sue her for 20 million and well see if she has to pay it. Thank you all very much for covering what is a remarkable state of affairs here in our politics. Up next, were going to turn to facebook ceo zuckerberg. Amid revelations of Cambridge Analytica. Mark warner wants zucker to testify and he joins me next. Later, were live in texas where a man supported of setting off explosions blew himself up this morning as police moved in. Well get exclusive new details on how investigators tracked him down. Im in the field. While this was burning, you were saving other homes. Neighbors helping neighbors and strangers alike. This is what americas about. Sometimes its nice to see all the good thats out there. Bringing folks out, we have seen it in community after community. We know that when youre tspending time with thelass grandkids. Music tech . Every minute counts. And you dont have time for a cracked windshield. Thats why at safelite, well show you exactly when well be there. With a replacement you can trust. All done sir. Grandpa looks great tech thanks for choosing safelite. Grandpa thank you child bye tech bye saving you time. So you can keep saving the world. Kids safelite repair, safelite replace facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is expected to speak sometime in the next 24 hours amid mounting Cambridge Analytica scandal. This follows a tumultuous week for zuckerberg that saw the value of his company as we must his personal wealth plummet by billions of dollars. Cambridge analytica, the digital firm have been accused of stealing the private data of more than 50 million facebook users. Facebook has suspended Cambridge Analytica from the platform. The companys decision to operate in the United States despite potentially violating federal regulations. Cambridge analytica, as soon as it was set up, you know, almost immediately started sending people to the United States. And we even had legal advice from giuliani law firm saying we shouldnt be sending them to manage american campaigns because that violates the law, but we did it anyway. That advice was disregarded. Last night nbc news itn channel 4 released additional footage of Cambridge Analytica chief executive alexander knicks posing as a prospective client. Knicks took credit for President Trumps victory. Have you met mr. Trump . Many times. You have . All the data, all the analytics, all the targeting, we ran all the digital campaign. We should note Cambridge Analytica insists there is no suggestion of any wrong doing by the company. In a statement they called the statement that they won the election for President Trump, quote, patently absurd and they have suspended knicks end up ing a full investigation. Kylie morris is washington correspondent for nbc. Kylie, its great to see you. Can you underscore for us what this latest round of videos that you all have published, what should our top takeaway be . I think the top takeaway is here we have this company that was, you know, a key part of the digital operation for the Trump Campaign. They were based in the mothership of Digital Management of the campaign. Their targeting was used in the final months to make sure facebook ads landed into the mail boxes of persuadable voters. They may have exaggerated their role. This was a sales pitch from alexander knicks, but it shed light on the way at which they operate. They talked about spreading material unseen, a hidden hand online trying to push messing that was unattributable, that was untraceable, and i think that is the thing that has raised most concern not only here in the u. S. But abroad because this is a company that has worked in lots of elections in lots of different countries. And the Trump Campaign has tried to play some of this down as well that ties the firm and facebook as well as talked about this. But Jared Kushner before this scandal broke, he told forbes about the Digital Strategy saying we found they were the most effective ways to reach the audiences. After the primary we started ramping up because we knew that doing a National Campaign is different than doing a primary campaign. That was when we formalize ed the system because we had to ramp up for digital fundraising. They were there really for the end of the campaign. They were. As you say, its theres been a downplaying of that despite the words of Jared Kushner. We never really believed in the kind of psychographic modicuming they were offering, it wasnt really used, certainly none of that facebook data was used, but there are real questions to ask about the real extent of what Cambridge Analytica did for the Trump Campaign. Finally, you saw there in the clip from christopher wily, he said we were warned by giulianis law firm that we werent to bring foreigners to the u. S. To win elections. Did Cambridge Analytica decide that they were going to flout the law or did they say we didnt actually really know . They said they never did, and they made sure that no british citizen could play a major role in the campaign, that never really happened. Theres also a question about whether or not Cambridge Analytica might have blurred the lines in terms of Campaign Financing and what they were doing for super pacs at the same time. So there are a whole series of questions in many, many areas, really, that need to be asked of Cambridge Analytica going forward. Channel 4 washington kornet kylie morris, thank you for your time today. Thank you. Lawmakers from across both sides of the aisle are weighing in on facebook and demanding answers about Cambridge Analyticas role in the campaign. Take a look. Facebook is something that touches a lot of americans. And the notion that not just your information but analytic information about people who are your friends on facebook, and its also being shared with something that the vast majority of users are not even aware was a possibility. I dont like the idea of bringing facebook before congress because i think that is a matter between the customers of facebook and facebook. Mr. Zuckerberg i would think the market is telling him we need to hear from him, the sooner the better, and i expect him to testify. For more on this, id like to bring in the gentleman you just saw there, senator mike warner. Thank you so much for your time this afternoon. Thank you, kasie. You are saying that you expect Mark Zuckerberg to testify before your committee. You and i talked about this in an interview a couple weeks ago. You were willing then to be a little more forgiving. What changed . Well, i think that were having this story dribble out, whether it be facebook, whether it be twitter, all the social media platforms. We continue to see how they were misused by the russians. Now we have this incident of either willing or unwilling working with this rather sketchy firm, Cambridge Analytica where 50 million accounts in effect were used as part of the trump operation, at least thats what Cambridge Analytica claims. So i think that he owes the American Public an explanation of what happened and how were going to make sure this doesnt happen again. These social Media Companies depend upon the trust of their users. And unfortunately if we dont hear from the leadership, policy makers will have to intervene. What are some steps you think you might be willing to take . I think this is the beginning of a debate. I dont want to act rashly, but there was a whole series of exemptions granted in the law that allowed these social Media Companies not to have the same kind of libel requirements that your network has. They said they had no ability to curate or interview any of the information. Weve clearly seen over the last decade plus thats not the case. There is some prioritization based upon certain algorithms of what kind of news you receive. So the ultimate tool is this socalled section 230. There may be a discussion in terms of the ability, if you get tired of receiving false news, can you move your information from one social Media Company to another and take all that residual information that resides about you, where you can move your full account from one Cell Phone Company to another, perhaps we ought tootolook at that as well. Were going to need these companies to work with us. The expertise in congress is not as high in the valley, and these Companies Need to understand this problem isnt going to go away, and the ability to misuse their platforms is only going to grow worse, just one last comment. Were still trying to wrestle with the question of fake accounts. The next wave of misuse will come in whats called deep fakes technology where someone elses face can be put on your body. Or a public figure can have any words come out of my mouth. Thats whats coming next and we have to be on guard. Do you feel as though facebook has misled you in their dealings with the committee . I feel that facebook was slow to respond. Its evident now that they knew about Cambridge Analytica and some of this misuse of this 50 million user information. Long before the whole campaign started. I know when i raise these issues immediately after the elections in november, i was round i dismissed by facebook. I would have thought since facebook had people embedded in the trump digital operation and the trump digital operation was using Cambridge Analytica, they might have been able to connect the dots. One of the things that disappointed me was it was literally months after i started calling on facebook and others to come clean that facebook finally announced and started to share information with the committee and with other committees. I do think theyve been sloechlt they have picked up the pace. I think, frankly, they were probably caught off guard as was the United States government. But as weve seen since, none of these efforts ended with the november election. Russians and others continue to misuse any division, for example, weve seen fake accounts being used to stir dissension over the dispute about nfl players kneeling during the national anthem, for example. You yourself are a businessman who has interacted with a lot of these top tech figures over the years. If im not mistaken you have interacted with zuckerberg. What is it about them thats gotten them to this point . Is it arrogance . These companies, whether its facebook, twitter, google, theyve been remarkably successful. I applaud their success. Theyve created a lot of good, the value of social media has a lot of positives. But i do think at times we get caught in our bubbles. I think some of the folks out in the valley get caught on the tech bubble and all they see is the upside of their tools and they fail to recognize with every upside theres also a counterbalance. Now we see the dark underbelly, and there is a general sense in the valley of we can just dismiss washington. They dont get anything. I think they do that at their own peril when many of their users will start to question the authenticity of the news they receive and will be concerned if they feel their personal information may be shared and used in an inappropriate manner in terms of this political campaign. That certainly is a conversation thats going on among many of my colleagues, friends, and families. Senator warner, thank you for your time. Officials have identified him as 23yearold mark anthony conditt. Police say they were following the car overnight when conditt pulled over and detonated a bomb inside the car, killing himself. But authorities in austin are still on alert saying conditt may have left bombs behind. I think we will have for several days lingering concerns and calls come in about suspicious packages until we get back to a sense of calm, until we go several days without any bombs being identified. Nbcs jay gray is in round rock, texas, near the scene where the suspect took his life. Jay, Austin Police say they are questioning the suspects roommate. What do they want to know . Yeah, kasie. Just for clarity we have moved to influencingerville where the home of the suspect was. The entire neighborhood is locked down. They walked away two room mates in handcuffs this morning but not charged with anything. They requested one and released him a. Second room the may is being questioned right now. Newly released Court Documents are now showing the fbi knew who conditt was last night and did plan to arrest him charging him with receiving, possessing, and transferring a destructive device. Of course, two packages were mailed from a fedex facility just outside of austin. And theres Surveillance Video of that. A big focus of the Ongoing Investigation right now is centered here. As you touched on earlier, nbc news has learned exclusive details through our Investigative Unit about how they tracked conditt down. First, those exotic batteries that were ordered online from asia helped to tie all the attacks together. Next, cell site analysts closed in on his cell phone number. He used that cell phone hours before he was cornered by police. Finally, that Surveillance Video from the austin fedex, it was the lynch pin, it was the final thing that let them know they were focused on this primary suspect. He was wearing a hat and blond wig in that video, but they knew exactly who they were after here, kasie. Unfortunately it ended the way it did but a lot of people across the region right now breathing a sigh of relief. But as you talked about, not ready to let their guard down just yet. Agents are being very diligent in saying they got to stay alert for other possible packages. Jay gray, thank you so much for your time today. Appreciate it. Jim cavanaugh is a retired agent in charge and msnbc contributor. Nbc has new details about the bomb and jay mentioned the suspect used foreign and exotic batteries from asia. Is that unusual . What does it tell you about what happened . The way this works, kasie, is in the kmant command post we take all those bomb components, plug them into the computerized lead tracking system, they were using the atf system in this case. When the lead came in for fedex, and they went to the fedex office, once they got the name of the bomber, that would immediately get plugged back into that computer database at the joc, the joint operations center. When the batteries came in as a lead initially early in the week, agents would have been going back to suppliers, in china and japan and saying, who have you sold batteries to in texas of this make and model. Give us the list. It might have been a lot of thousands of people. We would do this normally. Or get a a dumb of people and then you get the name and if this name hit and he was at fed ox and bought a dozen batteries and then they are drawing warrants and getting google searches and cell tower and complaints to search and rest, a destructive device, thats our bomb charge. So fbi running cell tower leads and components you have the detectives from austin, p. D. And everyone is moving and once the fedex explosion hit, it was moving lightning fast. Is it feasible, do you think, that his roommates would be unaware he was billing these bombs if they were living in the same apartment based on what we know . I guess i should never be surprised at somehow some people could be unaware. They are going to face questions. And here is the bottom line. If they tell the agents the truth, cant lie to atf or the fbi. You have to tell the truth. If they tell the truth, and they had no parpg, they werent aiders or abetter or failing to report the crime, they are just questioned and let go. But you remember in the Boston Marathon bombing case, there were some students who lied to the agents, might have disposed of dom bomb materials and they were charged and arrest and convicted. You have to tell the truth. Well wait and see. Maybe they are clean. Lets hope so. Maybe this is all of the act of one man and they know hes gone. All tell the truth to the fbi. Jim cavanaugh. Atf as well. Indeed. So right now a noreaster is burring parts of the east coast in several inches of snow. It appears it is still snowing here in washington, d. C. It is the fourth noreaster this month. The storm is halting transportation across the region and forcing skoole forcing s shut down on the first full day of spring. Lets bring in todays al roker who is standing by. Al, please give me some good news. So im tired of this. Things will clear out, at least where you are. But it is a sprawling system. Now south of the boston through ohio and parts of West Virginia on into the delmarva peninsula. Aupd could still see washington is in the snow for a while longer. So here is what we are looking at. Right now Winter Weather advisory and warpt storm warning stretching to boston and back into the appalachian trail. We are looking for snow and gusty winds along the i95 corridor.
