Decades. The fact that theyve done this, makes it she was gatekeeper to trump for three decades. Shes being interviewed today. Bloomberg reports that steve bannon and Corey Lewandowski have been asked to speak before that committee. Andrew mccabe sat for another marathon interrogation yesterday. This time about the clinton email investigation. But if republicans are trying to deflect from muellers probe and put the focus back on clinton, this didnt help. Mccabe reportedly confirmed this account from james comey about his conversations with the president. He asked specifically of loyalty in the context of asking me to stay. My common sense told me, whats going on here is hes looking to get something in exchange for granting my request to stay in the job. Our team of nbc news investigative reporters. National security and justice reporter Julie Ainsley and National Political reporter mike ma mowly joins me in the newsroom. Mike, rona graph, if anybody knows him, shes been with him for decades. She is the person you need to go through to get to donald trump. You might recognize her name having heard it pop up now and then in the russia investigation or pop up with that p. R. Guy. Should i ask her about this. To get to donald trump you needed to go through rona. What sort of questions will she be facing . We know about the interviews that happened with the House Intelligence Committee. They were behind closed doors. Theyre voluntary interviews. They dont press them or compel them to answer questions. First of all, this is happening in new york today. Most of the interviews are happening, the members of congress are asking the questions. This is the second interview this week happening in new york. I know of a handful of members attending but not all of them. This is a sign democrats say of the interest on the part of republicans in wrapping this up quickly. Theyve had so many different interviews this week. What you alluded to ron gold stone, asking him if he wanted to send potentially implicating information on to trump, that she would send it through rona. He was before the House Intelligence Committee earlier this month. Donald trump is in florida on his way to maralago. Hes on the tarmac greeting folks who came out to welcome him to florida for the holidays. Rona, she seems like a pretty important interview for the committee. I imagine democrats are unhappy about this happening at a time when theyre not there to question her themselves. Thats exactly right. This is a witness that democrats have been asking to come before the committee all year. They know shes been available to come to washington for months and shes willing to come next month. They dont understand why the majority of republicans wanted to do this in new york. The staff is the one doing a lot of this questioning instead of the members themselves. You know, we saw a letter from House Minority leader nancy pelosi. Shes trying to put the pressure on paul ryan to ensure that these efforts by the republicans to bring this to a quick conclusion are cut off. Paul ryan is saying its her politically posturing because she wants this to drag on. The effort to keep it partisan is not working. Bannon and lewandowski have been called as well to testify before the intel committee. When you hear news like that, what does that tell you about where the investigation is headed . Katy, youre citing the bloomberg report and nbc is trying to confirm the reports. Taking it as reported by bloomberg, it looks like the House Intel Committee is trying to wrap this up, like mike was saying. They see this as an investigation where the longer it drags out, the more its in the news, the more damage its doing to their president and the white house. These are the kind of witnesses, these are key people integral to the campaign, to the strategy, what have known a lot about what was going on, a different period in the campaign. Theyre calling them in. These are the people you call in towards the end of an investigation. They already said that they wanted to wrap it probably by the end of this year. These are being scheduled for just early in the new year. So it could be that they want to wrap it, you know, just in the first few weeks or first few morn months of 2018, which of course will bother democrats like nancy pelosi who already says that rushing this is botching the job. Also in the news, Andrew Mccabe backing up the testimony that the president asked for a loyalty pledge. Julia, thats a pretty big deal, i imagine, for the mueller investigation. What does that do potentially to those on the side of donald trump, on the side of some republicans in congress, fox news when they say its a bunch of bs . The argument that they could use katy, is to say mccabe is backing up what comey told him. They doubt the credibility of his notes and his President Trumptation in the first place. We know after then fbi director comey left the meeting with the president , he had be asked to make a loyalty pledge. He shared that with top officials at the fbi. Mccabe would have been one of them. He was number two under comey at the time. The fact that he was backing it up, the people trying to undermine the mueller investigation, they dont like to hear that message repeated, especially if they try to wave away anything that theres an obstruction case to be made. I know it was mentioned. Here are the actual dueling statements from paul ryan and nancy pelosi about the investigations. Pelosi saying political haste must not cut short the valid investigatory threats. Paul ryan responding to suit her political agenda, leader pelosi would like to see this investigation go on forever. The investigation will conclude when the committee has reached a conclusion. Both of them sticking to their guns on their side of the optics of this investigation at least. Mike memoly. Thanks for the memlies as they say. And julia ainsley, thanks very much. Joining me now, chief white house ethics lawyer under george w. Bush. Richard, welcome, an early Merry Christmas to you, buddy. Happy holidays, happy new year, et cetera. You have an oped out today. The ethics lawyer for president obama. Its in the new york times. It laid out four threats that Robert Mueller could face. Here they are. Curbing him. The president could put someone at the Justice Department to oversee the special counsel and possibly eliminate some of his team or curtail the scope of the investigation. You also say he could issue pardons. The president could grant pardons to people who already pleaded guilty or could be found guilty in the future. Think done jr. , think jared kushner. Smearing mueller. Weve already seen that. Or firing mueller. Something the president so far has said he will not do. Which do you think is the biggest threat right now . Well, i hope its a Merry Christmas. But i was worried that today we might have some negative developments. I think we may be out of the woods on that. But over the holidays, when the members of congress are out of washington and the house and Senate Judiciary committee are not as able to respond as quickly as they should in this situation, i think the president could try any of those strategies or people at the Justice Department or the white house could implement some of those strategies for undermining Robert Mueller. Its critically important for the president and his staff to understand that attempts to interfere with this investigation, with them would be an obstruction of justice. Hes already exposed himself to that through the firing of james comey and the pressure put on james comey for loyalty when hes head of the fbi. Im very much hoping that none of those things happen. That President Trump simply stops talking about this investigation, stops tweeting about it so Robert Mueller can do his job. You talked about the smear campaign. Is that because theyre pushing back. They wrote a letter to the president and the former u. S. Attorney. They say its critical to justice and public trust to ensure that those charged with conducting complex investigations are allowed to do their jobs free from interference or fear of reprisal. Do you believe that the president is going to listen to Something Like that . Well, i hope he does. I took the lead on one of those letters. The letter from former republican elected and appointed officials. The reason we wrote that letter was that we were concerned that the president was not listening, that he was listening to political operatives in the white house. Some of the remaining alt right faction and other conspiracy theorists who put him down in front of fox news and he listens to whats going on, on fox news instead of talking to his lawyers. I think if he talks to his lawyers, hes going to figure it out pretty quickly that he better lay off of Robert Mueller. Lay off this investigation and do his job while Robert Mueller does his. Thats the reason we wrote those letters. Im very much hoping the president listens. Since we got you here, i think we should talk about the emoluments clause. Yesterday a judge said it was too soon. Because congress hadnt already considered the issue. You were involved in that suit. What do you make of the ruling . Well, the bulk of the ruling discussed our standing as a plaintiff and whether the organization which im the vice chair could be the plaintiff in that case. The judge did not think we could. We disagree with that. We are going to appeal. The court did discuss also whether this is a question or whether congress ought to resolve this. Congress is not a potted plant. All that i will say, with respect to investigating president donald trump, this congress is acting like a potted plant and if the courts are unable to address this and leave it solely to congress, then i think the voters and tear the pot upside down and do some shuffling around ill say. Richard painter, chief white house ethics lawyer under george w. Bush. Richard, thank you very much. Thank you. Tempers reportedly flared as President Trumps advisers warned him that the outlook for the 2018 mid terms is not looking good right now. Weve got new reporting on the roar within the president s inner circle. Who really owns the populous movement that propelled President Trump to the white house . Former chief strategist steve bannon apparently is saying its him that owns it. Ds and family r thought id be the one to quit smoking, i was such a heavy smoker. But i was able to do it with chantix. I did not know that chantix would reduce my urges so significantly. Along with support, Chantix Varenicline is proven to help people quit smoking. Chantix reduced my urge to smoke. When you try to quit smoking, with or without chantix, you may have nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Some people had changes in behavior or thinking, aggression, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, or suicidal thoughts or actions with chantix. Serious side effects may include seizures, new or worse heart or blood vessel problems, sleepwalking or allergic and skin reactions which can be lifethreatening. Stop chantix and get help right away if you have any of these. Tell your Healthcare Provider if youve had depression or other Mental Health problems. Decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. The most common side effect is nausea. Everybody had doubts, including me, but i did it. Ask your doctor if chantix is right for you. This is the capper because this is, again, the biggest tax cut, biggest reform of alltime. This is something im very proud of. Great for our country. Great for the american people. President trump signed his overhaul to the nations tax code into law today before he left the white house to spend christmas in florida. He says its the largest tax cut in history. But according to the committee for a responsible federal budget, that on or actually goes to president Ronald Reagans 1981 tax cut. He also signed legislation to keep the federal government running for the next few weeks, that being donald trump. The tax bill helped them on a high note. But 2018 may may be a different story. Those closest to trump are bracing for a possible bloodbath in the 2018 midterms which could obliterate the republican majorities. Some of the president s advisers have taken it upon themselves to warn him directly about the fast deteriorating political environment. He met with aides and advisers to discuss the campaign after wednesdays white house tax victory celebration. The Washington Post reports the gathering saw tempers flare as aides vented their frustrations with electoral defeats this year and concerns about the 2018 political map according to several people with knowledge of the discussion. Complaints about the political operation and the Republican National committee boiled over playing out in front of the president as an inner circle drama. Joining us now Washington PostWhite House Reporter josh doid the ossi who cowrote that. You talk about Corey Lewandowski and he led much of the griping. Whats his chief beef . So corey thinks the rnc is not doing a great job for the president. He thinks theyre not raising enough money, not defending his message. He has concerns within the white house, the job who it is to give the message out to civic groups, people across the country and the political office. His calls were not being returned by the president and his aides since john kelly came in and put a clamp down. He was trying to tell the president , i dont think youre being served well or this election could be a dire situation for you. Was he receptive . Well, the president based on our reporting, the president didnt say much in return. A number of the other advisers, kellyanne conway, bill acceptian others who work in the white house, he comes in for a meeting like that, hes bombastic and tells the president to make changes and then exits while they have the daytoday work in the building. The sense is that the president is considering some changes in his operation ahead of 2018. Hes hearing it from a lot of people. I dont think hes pulled the trigger on anything definitive yet. Seems to be discord between the white house and the Republican National committee. Lay out what their relationship is like. Rye moore, doug jones race began the flash point of that relationship. The president assented to the rnc pulling out of the race. Then at the end he decided suddenly to go in for roy moore and made the rnc follow him back in. Theres been tension at the white house. They dont think the rncs communication and political shop are doing enough to help the president. They dont think theres enough trump loyalists there. Meanwhile, the rnc has 168 members across the country. Some are more supportive of the president than others. It has to deal with the president who you know, katy, goes on whims and can change his mind on the spot of a dime and expects everyone else to fall in line. One minute criticizes you, the next minute praises it. Josh dossi of the Washington Post. I think i made it to youtube. Thank you very much, sir. Lets bring in charlie sieykes d author of the book. And a former Senior Adviser to president obama and senator hillary clinton. Guys, welcome. Charlie, there is concern obviously among the inner circle of the president according to the reports that 2018 is going to be problematic. They did just pass this tax bill, but what do you think is going to happen . Are they facing a bloodbath . Theyre facing a potential bloodbath. You know, you can never predict anything in the trump era in terms of politics. There does seem like a perfect storm. On the other hand, i think democrats ought not to assume that this thing is in the bag. People might actually decide they like the tax cuts more than they do right now. The economy might pick up its growth and even though we are in the era of trump, a Strong Economy trumps a lot of other problems here. But obviously, i mean, theyre looking at the same polls were looking at. Theyre seeing what happened in virginia and new jersey and alabama. A defeat from the jaws of victory. They ought to be very, very concerned. Theres also concerned, according to politico among the rnc chair, romney mcdaniel. She gave the white house a warning a few weeks before the Alabama Senate election, she warned several people according to that report that there was a deepening anxiety that a fullthroated trump endorsement of accused child molester roy moore in the special election which he was edging closer to would further damage the partys standing with women. A memo which details the Approval Ratings nationally and in several states would go unheeded as trump went all in for the ultimately Unsuccessful Republican candidate. So this Womens Movement that we are were liefg in right now, this me too movement, do you think thats going to end up hurting republicans in 2018, hurting donald trump in 2018 or his party or 2020 the way it didnt hurt him in 2016 . I actually think that this resurgent of women voters, resurgence of women voters is in response to donald trump. I think the womens march, which was the largest march in largest political march in american history. Through the summer, the people flooding the town halls were women and the people flooding the ballot box are women. In virginia in particular. White College Women came out against ed gillespie and voted for north a. M. Many said it was a response to donald trump. The same voters moved significantly from the Republican Party to support doug jones in alabama. So id say the decision to actually endorse roy moore, an alleged child molester taps up a whole year in which the president himself was accused of assaulting over a dozen women and has taken action after action after action that shows women that he really thinks of their dignity as a second class issue. Charlie, is that going away . Is Donald Trumps woman issue going away . Are the accusers going away or will we hear more about it in 2018 . Its not going away. Were in the midst of an extraordinary cultural shift. If this country is coming to grips with Sexual Harassment, the man in the oval office himself has credibly been accused of that kind of conduct. That is not going away. I think his decision to embrace roy moore was a massive political miscalculation. One of the fallout frs the tax bill talking about in the last segment, the Republican Party has latched itself so closely to donald trump, who latched himself to roy moore. The Republican Party going into 2018 with a president at the top of their party who has plausibly himself been accused of molesting women, who embraced an accused child molester and all of those photos implicate every other republican into the new year, do you believe these women . If we believe all the other women, do you believe these women and do you believe that these accusations are relevant to Donald Trumps fitness in office . That question is not going away in 2018. Are democrats going to nominate more women for office in 2018 . Are we going to see a woman running for president in 2020 on the democratic ticket . I think there will be a lot of women running. More important than that, this huge surge of women running for office. There are 9, 10, 11,000 women running for office. You have more women running for congress than ever in our history. I think women are not only the backbone of the resistance to trump, they will lead the political response to him as well in office. I think you see this happening in the congress. Elizabeth warren, gillibrand. They are the ones he singles out for the most disgusting and boorish responses. This is a response and a counter response that will grow in 2018. Those close to Kersten Gillibrand say she believes in womens issues and believes they are not treated equally. Chaf charlie, quick question. Steve bannon, the vanity fair article of him having a political career of his own in the front. Do you think bannon will be a problem for the republicans in 2018 . Of course, egs a problem. He humiliated himself in alabama. That was a combination of delusion and hugh brings that apparently he takes himself way more seriously than his record would suggest he ought to. His a big loser in the events of the last few weeks. When you see Mitch Mcconnell and donald trump making peace, where does that leave steve bannon . I thought it was funny in alabama when he was trying to call out my colleague Joe Scarborough for not going. As good of a university that steve bannon went to. He did this in alabama by the way. Where did he go to college . University of alabama. Wrong place to do that. Charlie sykes, neera tanden, thank you very much. Appreciate it. Security council has unanimously voted to impose tough new sanctions on north korea. The vote comes a day after the United Nations overwhelmingly voted to condemn the u. S. For its recognition of jerusalem as israels capital. Ambassador haley warned other u. N. Members that the United States would be quote, taking names of countries that failed to back the u. S. The eight nations that sided with the United States along with those that abstained or failed to show up have been invited to a january 3rd reception to thank them for their friendship. For more on this, Michael Leiter joins me now. A former director of the National Counterterrorism center and Senior National security analyst. Michael, so good to see you. Love having you on the show. Lets take a look at all of the countries that decided to vote against the u. S. Take a look at all of them. These were the ones who were not invited to this party. Countries that we work pretty closely with when it comes to fighting terrorism with. We work closely with for counterintelligence. We have france on this list, United Kingdom is on the list. Not to mention a number of middle Eastern Countries that we work with to try and contain isis. What is the fallout from a party where were playing favorites . These are countries that, as you said, we work with on almost every front. Frankly, almost every country we need in the world to be successful in the president s National Security strategy that they just released earlier this week. The fact is, this sort of, frankly, schoolyard bullying is about as successful as schoolyard bullying is. The uk, france, all of these nations have their National Interests at heart, as do we. Believe in alliances and International Cooperation and the idea that our verbal threats at the u. N. Where this sort of pettiness is going to get them to adhere more to our goals, our mutual goals and support our agenda on other topics is, in my view, not just silly, but not the way a great power and a great Global Leader like the United States should behave. I was reminded of a Campaign Rally where donald trump was on stage. It was freezing vladimir putin. He was joking about how he would not kill journalists. He also said this. Listen to this. Everybody that goes against me is like x, x. Wouldnt it be nice, that should happen with our country. Everybody goes against us, down the tubes. Sort of interesting. Sort of interesting. Is that the goal here, for everyone that goes against the u. S. For them to go down the tubes . Well, if it is, were going to find ourselves in deep, deep trouble on almost every National Security priority we have. As great a power as the United States is, we cant accomplish any of our goals without aligns. Thats not to say we shouldnt have tough conversations with our allies. But we cant make these sorts of issues a transaction by transaction test for their loyalty to the United States. Again, they wont be bullied. Every administration has challenges with its allies. You think about the iraq war and president bush and france and getting rid of the word french fries for freedom fries. There were challenges with other countries as well. You have to have a strategic goal and understand how that helps you achieve that strategic goal and persuade. Certainly snipes, petty threats are almost certainly not going to work in the International Environment and largely are going to push people away from the United States into other coalitions which will have our interests even less at heart. Exclusive parties dont line up either. Real quickly, if you dont mind, sir, what will you be watching for in 2018 . I think 2018 is going to be the year of watching north korea and threats there. The continued rise of china. The mueller outcome. That investigation, how it affects the relationship with russia. On this front, pushing away alliances rather than building them. How regions in the pacific or europe take matters into their own hands, and potentially turn away from u. S. Global leadership. Senior National Security analyst Michael Leiter. As congress, the media and hollywood grapple with the me too movement, revelations about sexual miss kcon at Ford Motor Company are back in spotlight. If you missed this article, you should go back and read it. Several women accuse ford employees of sexual abuse over two decades after the company tried to tackle misconduct. Bosses and fellow laborers treated women as property or prey. Men crudely commented on their breasts and buttocks. Graffiti of penises was carved in the tables, spray painted on the floors and scribbled on to walls. They groped women, pressed against them. Simulated sex acts or masturbated in front of them. Supervisors traded better assignments for sex and punished those who refused. That was a quarter century ago. Today women at the plants say theyve been subjected to many of the same abuses. Like those who complained before, they were mocked, dismiss dismissed, threatened and ostracized. Im joined by der ka thomas, says she had offensive touching by her coworker and her supervisors allowed this coworkers to bite her buttocks while she was on the job. Brittany carlisle says her boss battered sexually assaulted her and physically attacked her when she refused and ignored his sexual advances. They both still work at ford. Ladies, thank you very much for joining us and thank you for your bravery in speaking out. Brittany, lets start with you. Tell us in detail what happened . I work for the Janitorial Company of ford and i cleaned my supervisors, bob devines office who was a ford manager. He would try to touch me or grope me and manipulate me until i gave in to his sexual favors that he wanted. I eventually told the union about it. And the union offered me to write a grievance and to negotiate with bob devine to pay me off so that i would be quiet about the situation and not be known about the Sexual Harassment. The union did this . The union that represented you as well . Yes. That was their solution . One of the union reps solutions. So then i just kept my mouth shout and kept dealing with the harassment and the abuse until eventually i had enough and i got ahold of the Sexual Harassment hotline, and then met with h. R. And got the problem solved. Derricka, what about you . I dealt with several incidents within Ford Motor Company. Did you want me to touch on a specific one . Which ones stand out to you right now . One tla stands out to me right now is the situation where you guys had mentioned where i was bit on my behind. How in the world was that allowed to happen . Your guess is as good as mine. It was a particular day. This individual, he would stop by the area so often and talk to another coworker. I didnt know him. He would always speak, but this particular day he approached me and he was saying things like mmm and he asked me and sat at my work station, could he take a picture. I said no. He said im going to take one anyway. Then he said he proceeded to say im just playing, im just playing. He got up as if he was going to leave. And proceeded to bite me on my behind. While he was doing that, i was so shocked and stunned once the group leader had approached, he was since gone and i had brought it to his attention. I said im going to go upstairs on him. He said, do what you have to do. Do what you have to do. By this time i had already experienced several other incidents with the company in which i had given written complaints and nothing had been done thus far. So i was a little skeptical, a little scared. By the time i did report it, i had the knowledge of the Sexual Harassment hotline and once i reported it to Labor Relations, i was asked to do a written statement. I did that. And they asked why didnt i come forward, i said because of the prior incidents i had and i brought it to your attention and nothing is done. I really feel that ford does not provide a safe environment for us to complain on these gentlemen and feel safe going to and from our vehicles. Let me just read what the statement that ford gave us. Okay. They say that ford does not tolerate Sexual Harassment or discrimination. We take those claims very seriously, investigate them thoroughly. We have a comprehensive approach to prevent and address Sexual Harassment and discrimination at our facilities. They also say at the chicago plants, conducted more than 20,000 hours of Mutual Respect training for all hourly and salaried employees. They provided additional training on how to properly investigate harassment and discrimination claims for Human Resource teams, including Human Resources staff by more than 30 . Theyre listing a lot of actions. But i have to bring up, this is not the first time this has happened at ford plants. This was an issue in the 90s. It ended with a settlement, i believe in 2000. There was initially actions taken. There was training, there were these Group Therapy sessions. Things seemed to be moving in the right direction. But very clearly, according to your claims and the claims that were hearing, there was a back slide. The times details how that back slide shows how hard it is to keep these things out of the workplace. Once theyre addressed, to not let them come back. Youre fighting right now for your dignity. What do you think should change . Lets start with you derricka. What do you think needs to change to make these changes permanent . I really believe that in order for ford to have a change within this business, they need to enforce these training courses. They need to take action against these individuals accordingly as they happen. I believe that these Sexual Harassment and the zero tolerance, the policies they claim they have. I believe all of those things that you had just stated, they need to reinforce all of those and keep those in effect within the company at all times. I believe they need to have it im giving you an example. Every so often we would have such as a fire drill. I think as much as they send around the safety precaution papers and the safety crew that walks around and makes sure were following protocol, i think they should have individuals within the company that ensures that Sexual Harassment is not ex is tents within the workplace. I believe they need people at all times walking around, monitoring the company and the pretty much whats taking place within the facility. Britney, you both still work there. Quickly, whats it like being there now . Its terrifying. You dont know whats going to happen to you walking into the door. Walking up the escalator. Acht the top of his list is infrastructure. Infrastructure is by far the easiest. People want it. Republicans and democrats. Well have tremendous democrat support on infrastructure, as you know. I could have started with infrastructure. I actually wanted to save the easy one for the one down the road. So well be having that done pretty quickly, i dont know. A lot of talk in the white house whether they should have started infrastructure last year to engender some type of bipartisan support instead of something as divisive as travel ban, but that not happen. The president is reportedly going to release his longawaited plan to fix americas roads, rails and public roads and bridges sometime next month. Whether it will be easy remains to be seen. Joining us, white house correspondent, the best one, in my opinion. Kidding. I like them all. Reporter thank you. Kristen welker. The president wants to get infrastructure done next year. Is this his play for 2018 to strike a bipartisan tone to avoid what many are believing will be the blood bath for republicans next fall . Reporter i think thats certainly part of the equation, katy. Look, theyve been talking about infrastructure for quite some time. I think it is notable that you are hearing the president basically emphasize that today. He emphasized it in a tweet today. The significant because weve wondered what will he try to tackle first in the new year . Looks like we have the answer. You pointed out, a lot of debate at the white house about starting with infrastructure before he, for example, tried to do health care, which, of course, republicans failed to repeal and replace obamacare. Would the political calculus have been different if he started with infrastructure . Hes not wrong to suggest there are a lot of democrats who want something done when it comes to infrastructure. Of course, the Political Landscape is changing for its reason you mentioned. 2018 is going to be right around the corner. Of course, once we all get back and the new year begins its going to be all about the midterms. Thats going to make it that much more complicated to get a big piece of legislation passed, katy.
