Will, theyll be part of a public hearing. But any investigation of this kind will start with private interviews to determine the value of what a witness has to provide for the committee. One thing that were really consideration of, we werent given a free pass to do a witch hunt. We were asked to do a real investigation. And well see high profile people ask well see analysts from the intelligence community. Or we may see a 28yearold that happened to answer the phone at the white house on the wrong day when an ambassador called him, and when they went around and said who talked to the ambassador, they raised their hand. Mark and i dont want that person to have to get a lawyer, to be interviewed. We would like to bring them up and whanlunderstand what role t played, if any, without any liability. So were trying to assess each individual person with what the need is. We dont rule anything out for anybody relative to how public the information might be. Have you already spoken to flynn . Im not going to tell you one way or the other. You said that you requested interviews from 20 people. When did this start . I think they start as early as next monday. I would probably be the wrong one to verify that. But theyre immediate. Im sorry . They are immediate. And remember, these are the people who help put together january 6 report, most of those fall into that category. When you see a movie, it is roughly two hours. When you see how much film went into a movie, it is probably 50 hours. We dont want to just look at what was in the report. We want to look at what was cut and thrown on the floor. Either an analytic product or intelligence. To figure out whether an analyst made the right determination with what we know today. What we know today is a lot more than what they knew in december when they went through this process. Time for a couple more. Right here. You said youre looking at people involved with the russian government. Also people involved in organized crime in russia. I dont think we said anything with organized crime. We said anybody that had connections to the russian government and contact with the campaign. But unfortunately, many people this russia who are part of organized crime seemed to have ties. Ill complete one be attributed to him. You mentioned potential attack in the 2018 election sf does this need to be completed before then . I hope so of. Tomorrows hearing is with specifically that in mind. That we provide more public awareness, not just this country but throughout the world, what russia is up to. I think it is safe to say that officials have pushed what we the government knows about russias capabilities and intent. Weve pushed it out to those countries most imminent to have ections. Werthin 30 days of the firsfrench election. Four candidates, it will go to o dwats a runoff in may. I think it is safe to say that the russians are actively involved in the french elections. You mention that had your staffers have thousands of pages to go throughful are they taking notes by hand . Or is there an i. T. Program . Im not going to be specific as to how were doing it but there is no shared drive this time around. That didnt have a happy ending. So were, again, this gets back to what we said about every iteration is a new negotiation, and were not complaining about that. We think it is really, really important that we have a clear understanding up front, who has access. How do they treat the information theyve got. Where do they store the information, who is responsible for the security of that information. Because youve got to understand, were going through an investigation that will last x amount of time. After that, weve got to perform our oversight job which means well be working with the same people, asking they will for that documents to do our normal oversight job. If in fact we dont live up to the security that we promise them, then youre going to have an Oversight Committee that cant do its job. One of the things were doing, where part of the rub comes from. Were trying to get access that goes beyond what the gang of eight has had. In a sense, how we have all of that in terms of raw products. And again, every Committee Member said they have to see or know some of this information before they can sign their name on a finished product. So theres some healthy tension there nflt for any of you that have been at any of the confirmation hearings, one question you have heard of every person who was nominated and eventually confirmed is, would you provide for the committee, if asked, raw Intelligence Data . There is rarely a time where a committee would ask for that. Were in a very rare time. And we will test some people to see if in fact their commitment is 100 correct. Let me end with, the committee will go wherever the intelligence leads us. You can ask us 30 different ways about a person. When we have them scheduled, we will tell you. You wont have to beat it out of us. We hope to make updates a periodic thing but we wont do it unless we have something to share with you thats educational. That shows you a little of the road map were going down. Right now, were not at a point where we can tell you, it is every two weeks or three weeks or a month. We want to do it based on the challenging conditions. My last comment is a comment i made before. When we started this, we saw the scope, what was involved. I said it was the most important thing i had ever taken on in my public life. That i believe more firmly now than even when we started. Well get it right. Thank you. Good afternoon. Im kate snow here with you in new york. Youve been watching press conference from two powerful senators there, both the chairman, richard burr, and senator mark warner, democrat, who lead to Senate Intelligence committee. What weve been listening to is a briefing on that committees investigation into russia, russias tampering with the u. S. Election, and potential ties with anyone in the trump camp. You heard a lot of things there. They said they have seven staff who have been work othis investigation, going through thousands of pages of documents. They said they have top level clearance to do this. Tomorrow will be their first open public hearing. They mention that had they have put in requests to about 20 different individuals to be interviewed over the course of this investigation. They said theyre not done yet. They have weeks to go until this investigation is complete. We have a lot to get to but weve had waiting and listening to that, a member of the house. A democrat from are california, thank you for waiting along with us. And listening to that. It struck me that the tone in the senate in that room was quite different than whats happening on your side of the capitol. You even saw one of the senators put his hand on the shoulder of the other. They are a united front. Thats not at all whats happening in your committee, in the house Intelligence Committee. That press conference is what it looks like when republicans and democrats go down an investigative road together. We were on that road in the house side up until last week and it is my hope that we can continue to pursue just what happened with russia, whether any u. S. Persons were involved, and most importantly, ssure the American People well do everything we can to never find ourselves in a mess like this again. We need to be on the road that the senate is on. Not a stalled investigation that were undergoing right now in the house. Have you heard from chairman nunes today . Have you gotten any word on when democrats might be briefed on what he knows . No. Of course we were all moping we would be reading in the newspaper with the hearing yesterday. That we were supposed to hear testimony from sally yates. That was canceled and no future hearings regarding russia are on the books. This morning he suggested that you all, the democrats are the ones playing politics with all of this. The chairman sets hearing dates. So i think the best thing right now is for this chairman, who i respect and have worked with in the past. But i think on this issue has a conflict of interest, were to recuse himself so he has credibility to lead to committee with other nonrussiarelated business but allow to us proceed so we have independence and can make progress. On the house side of things, thank you so much. Well let you get back to work. One of our top investigative producers is with us as well. Nbc news intelligence and National Security reporter, you also likely know bill kristol is with us. And with me onset is National Security analyst jeremy bash. Jeremy, i would like the start with you. You were formerly at the cia is that the department of defense. Your headlines out of what we just heard. What did we learn from that press conference . 20 witnesses which mea they are going beyond the Intelligence Committee professionals. For people that can assess what russia did but in fact about contacts between trump campaign, the trump inner circle and russia. Thats very significant. Second, they said they would interview Jared Kushner and other people who would want to come forward but they would do it after they have the relevant facts. That means theyre going after documents, issuing document preservation orders, theyre saying give us your emails, your phone records, give us any materials. So when we interview you, when we hear your testimony, we can do it in an intelligence way and based on the documents. Thats a critical step. This is a bipartisan series investigation. You can tell that from this presentation. Was there something significant about how theyre getting the documentation . Senator burr made a joke pits not coming over on a hard drive. There are some challenges. Some people are outside the united states, maybe even in russia. That presents one particular challenge. I think with regard to the peel like roger stone, it is a chance for them to hold their zpomts produce they will to the investigators. Thats a critically important step. Let me go to kelly. We talked about this a moment ago. In terms of appearances, it could not be more stark. I could use a heads up. She cant hear me. Well get connected with kelly there in a moment. We have with us at the moment, Kristin Welker is with us. The white house response to these multiple investigations going on right now. The fact there will be a hearing, a first public hearing in the Senate Intelligence committee tomorrow. What do we hear out of the white house . Reporter well, the white house has been fairly defensive about all of this. It comes as theyre mounting questions about the way not devin nunes has handled his investigation had and the fact that he was briefed at the white house. You saw that today when sean spicer was pressed on who sign in the devin nunes to get this late night briefing . The white house still not able to panls question or who briefed him specifically. So theyre trying to downplay this. Theyre not calling for him to recuse himself as a number of democrats are. Instead, trying to turn the page. Focus on the legislative agenda. This continues to be a problem politically for this white house, as they want to focus other issues. No direct response though, kate, to what we just heard. We are trying get that. Can i go to you and your impressions with what we just witnessed with the two top senators on that Intelligence Committee, a united front. Did it speak to you as a much more bipartisan effort . Sure. The question is why did they have press conference . I think the answer is obvious. Theyre saying this is inlligence investigation. Ignore the house is not going the nunes the democrats do not trust chairman nunes to have a real investigation. Paul ryan has said he wont remove hill. Nunes wont recuse himself. Maybe two mots from now the chaos will subside. It doesnt look like there will be a select committee or an independent committee. You could have citizens and judges do it. I dont think trump wants to appoint those people and give them full access. That was the meaning of what happened today. Senators burr and warner were saying has the Serious Investigation. This is the investigation. There is no point of having a second. Whats the point in having the house replicate what the senate is doing . All kinds of questions to be asked of the white house, chairman nunes, what he was doing there, who let him in. Did they know that nunes was there, et cetera, et cetera. I think thats the meaning. Forget about the house. The Senate Investigation is the investigation. We keep talking about the investigation. It is actually three investigations. I want to refresh people. First theres one we keep talking about in the house. The house Intelligence Committee. There was that hearing last week the fbi director james comey. Now you have democrats of cancelling a second hearing. You just mattered hearing was supposed to be yesterday. Nunes said it is the democrats playing politics. Then you have the Senate Investigation which we just heard from the two top senators. Their top intelligence members briefed the public. Theyll be having that hearing. Separately you have the Senate Appropriations committee holding a hearing on russia as we speak this afternoon. And finally, as we learned, the fbi is in the middle of its own investigation. The details of which are under wraps. Given all those things hpening at once, help us understand where were at. Thats a very good point. As important as this Senate Investigation is, this bipartisan show that we just witnessed was really important. The fbi is conducting the most meaningful investigation here. The senate doesnt have the reach to get kind of documents, to use the full force of the u. S. Intelligence committee the fbi has. And the national cant prosecute anybody and threaten witnesses with prosecution. And witnesses before the senate can take the fifth amendment. This fbi investigation, youre right. We know very little about it. We know james comey said pits looking into whether Trump Officials colluded with the investigation. I want to say, he fully acknowledged that he was a trump supporter. He voted for President Trump. But he said that he can be impartial and theyre going to go wherever the intelligence leads in this investigation. I thought that was rather significant. Jeremy, youre nodding along. Kennel is right that the fbi has the reach, the resources, they can knock on your door and iss issue. Tonight congress can have hearings. One is a briefing to the president on threats to the united states. Thats not very satisfying for the president and his inner circle. Or criminal prosecution and thats a long way off and an uncertain path for the fbi. We dont know if there is a basis for it. But congress can hold hearings and bring attention to it. Kelly odonnell, are you back with us . Reporter yes. I had a, can you hear me now moment. Theres a lot going on there. Well give that you. Tomorrow the hearing that well have on the senate side, are we expecting fireworks ther i was looking at the witness list. It looks more like a hearing about the state of play and what russia has done. Reporter normally when we look to fireworks, we look to the house side more than the senate for these things. But i think this is a ground work kind of hearing to give people the lay of the land, to give us a skoem of what the senate is trying to do. I think the News Conference we just watched is really remarkable and important in a couple of ways. The way these two senators expressed their confidence in each other, their separation from the white house, and their concern about realtime events. Not only what happened in the u. S. Election in november but what may be happening in france and other places now, raising a sense of alarm about the capabilities they believe russia has and the awareness theyre trying to bring. That takes this into even another direction of a realtime kind of crime thriller, espionage thriller happening that can change the course of events. So thats very significant. I think when youre talking about what is the reach as our guests have already talked about, the fbi has the greatest Law Enforcement power, but the committee can shine a light of sunshine, we call it in government about some of these figures who may ultimately become part of public hearing. This discussion of interviewing people privately to determine what they may have or may not have to share. Then scheduling more private meetings to discern a bit more of the information and then getting to a public hearing. One of the questions i had for the chairman, how much can the reach go in materials of resources and reach comfortable they go outside the u. S. To get Additional Information should will they try to do that . And one of the figures that comes to mind is Christopher Steel who has been a british operative and has been publicly a part of this conversation as the author of the socalled dossier. And heres how he answered my question about getting to people they want to talk to. We wont get into names on the list but i can assure you that it is lengthy. Mark and i have both agreed that were willing to issue subpoenas. It is tough to make a subpoena go outside the united states. We understand the limitations. But i only say this. That he and i are tapping into everything we can to understand how we increase our reach in the ability to investigate and to get intelligence that would be pertinent to the investigation. That gives you a sense of the seriousness they are willing to use subpoena power, which they do not take lightly on capitol hill. And then making the distinction, there could be individuals who may have had incidental contact. And theyre aware of the fact, if you become a witness on capitol hill, you can get some very big legal bills. Sometimes an involvement in this can be crushing financially so theyre trying to separate people who brushed up against something germane to what theyre looking at. So the pledge to tell us some of the names who will be interviewed, even if those interviews are done behind closed doors which the Intelligence Committee does all the time as part of fact gathering. So we should be able to get some incremental updates. For the fbi, that would be a much tougher thing. So this committee may be able to give as you sense of the direction in the weeks ah let me go back toll, theyve been reporting about paul man a fort. He bought a multimilliondollar apartment with cash. Splifk on him, do you think dlr serious questions there . I thought would you say youre sure i bought multimilliondollar apartment with cash in new york city too. Doesnt he have one do that . Yeah. Every couple months i like the turn them over. I think this was a big day for the Trump Administration with. The fbi investigation, and a Serious Investigation, were going to get to the truth, i think. I think theres a reasonably high chance of that. I think thats the case. So if theres nothing wrong happened, that will be fine. Well discussion the russians are trying to disrupt elections in the u. S. As elsewhere in the world but there was no involvement of surrogates or aides and the like. Or well discover there was. I think i now feel with the senate stepping up and saying were doing a Serious Investigation in a bipartisan way and the fbi chugging ahead. For those two paths, i think the odds are good. Are we two different personalities on, the house side, between the chairman and the ranking member, are we losing sight of forest through trees . Well, personal relationship dozen matter. But this will unfold had two faceses. The first will look at what russia did. That will be the subject of tomorrows hearing. What does our intelligence say about what russia did. Thats safe ground for republicans for the majority. What is a little dicier, was the trump team in contact with, or to use the fbis material, coordinating with the russians. Thats a dicier proposition for the president and his allies on the hill. And the test will not be phase one. It will be whether they go relentlessly to phase ii. Kristin welk here had to get some reporting, bill kristol, thank you to all of you for being with us on a busy day. Up next, Melania Trump spoke and well take a closer look at her emerging role. Do you have things you want to do before you retire . Oh yeah sure. Ok, like what . But i thought we were supposed to be talking about investing for retirement . Were absolutely doing that. But theres no law you cant make the most of today. What do you want to do . Id really like to run with the bulls. Wow. Yea. Hope youre fast. I am. First lady Melania Trump making a rare public appearance at the state department. Participating in the International Women of courage awards. Sightings of the first lady have been difficult to come by lately. She is still living in new york at trump tower with her son baron and theyre set to move to the white house in june. Paul schwartzman is a writer at the washington post. He wrote about searching for reclusive and elusive first lady. Paul joins us now. Thank you for being with us. I think everybody writes, who is she . You write that shes a rohrshach test. The fact we dont know who she is, it makes blank slate that we read whatever we want into her. If youre a fan of donald trump, you probably see her as somebody who is being a dutiful mom and carving a new role for the first lady. If you dont like donald trump, see her as a big waste of taxpayer money living on the 58th floor in her penalt house with all that gold. So people are coming at this in different ways depending on where they are with trump. She spoke about empowering women. Is she uncomfortable in the role, do you think . She sure looks uncomfortable. And it was only yesterday that they announce that had she had a press secretary. So shes not a political wife. A lot of the first ladies have been Vice President s wives or senators wives. She was a model who lived with this rich guy and now she is the first lady of the united states. Thats a whole different ball game. And yes, she looks really uncomfortable. We dont know that she, we dont know if she is uncomfortable. She isnt talking about it. We just know, were just going off her body language. Her friends are saying that she is typically very reserve asked shes always been that way before her husband got into politics. So im not sure this is anything different than people got. Before they just the didnt care. . It is probably hard to get a lot of sources to talk to you about Melania Trump. You did talk to one of her friends who said she is perfectly happy. Yeah. I mean, you sort of expect theyll say that. I was surprised that they vouched for the quality of the marriage. Given mr. Trumps history, there are a lot of questions he about him and his relationships with women. There you have it. She said theyre happy and shes happy and everything is great. So i guess well take her word for it for the time being. I want to show some video. She went to a hospital. The first lady went to a hospital and she was reading a dr. Seuss book. A report he tried to ask a question, as i understand it, and she was kind of shoed away. The first lady was moved to a different area to take a picture, right . Are they trying limit her . The reporter from the bbc told me she approached her and the first lady looked like she wanted to engage. And then she was shoed away. The other negligent happened was this luncheon she hosted at the white house earlier this month, they allowed the pool cameras in and they got her walking in and everybody is standing up and applauding. She goes to the micro phone uxt just as she starts to talk, they cut it off and send the pool out. So she wasnt allowed, they didnt allow her to be captured in that way. I dont know whats happening with that. I dont have any real insight into it but i certaly feeds the theme that shes sort of been pushed off. Or sort of hiding in plain sight. Yet she is popular according to polling. You look at the latest cnn poll. They show her approval at 52 favorability. Thats up 16 from the last poll which was before the inauguration. So thats not so bad. First ladies do tend to often be more popular than their husbands well, shes beautiful, shes beautiful, she wears great clothes. People like to talk about her. She hasnt said anything really very controversial or offensive. You know, all shes doing is costing the taxpayers a lot of money living in new york. I think thats a problem in certain segments of the population. Do you think she took on a bigger role . It may that be theres a lot less attention on her. I think paradoxically, by staying away and being on the sidelines, she draws more attention than she would if she was in the white house doing the traditional things. It is an interesting read. When some people in the room started telling their personal stories of addiction and losing loved ones, it was painfully clear how real this epidemic is. This is vanessa who is in recovery. What was the drug they gave . Percocet. From percocet, it went to oxi. From oxi it went to heroin. Because it is definitely more accessible and so much cheaper. Very quickly, i lost everything. I was homeless, i chose to be homeless. Im joined now by nbc news contributor dr. Natal azar. They were thereecausehe president wants to focus this now. I have to start with, theres a new study out in the journal of the American Medical Association that says, heroin use appears to have become more socially acceptable among suburban and rural white individuals. Ive done a lot of reporting on this. Ive the spent a lot of time with people who say to me, using heroin among their friends is the way that you and i would get together and i would bring a bottle of wine. They would bring heroin. Which is scary, because traditionally we dont think of it that way. Wednesday of becoming addictive to prescriptive opioids and once theyre addicted, theyll to go something cheaper or easier to get. What needs to happen to break that acceptance . Look, i think were doing a good job by discussing it constantly. I want to mention, it is one of the benefits listed in the Affordable Care act of so losing funding for that would be a blow to all the people who have been fitted from that. If people could have a wish list, i think they would bring it down to these things. You want immediate digs medication assisted treatment. Peep who can prescribe methadone and things like. That you want more educational flams schools and communities and to train more doctors in Overdose Prevention and also, distribution, and you want to have enhancement of that Prescription Drug monitoring programs to enhance best practicing. Doctors need to know about state registries. Whats working. Exactly. And they need to follow guide lines, i dont want to say policing but monitoring. Part of what the white house was doing. They talked about best practices. They brought in governor Chris Christie. Hes been brough this to head up an advisory role to fight drug addiction. I got an email this afternoon from someone who runs a facility. He said grateful you bring in christie. When you look at the epidemic in newark, he wonder whats christie has done to support those communities. So how much can a governor or now a commission at the National Level do . I know. I appreciate that concern. And i dont want to say that it sounds hypocritical. I would like to have the been fist doubt and have some faith in the administration that with the, i believe, 500 million extra has been added to the budget to offset this, to combat the opioid will epidemic, we will see these statements translate into a meaningful rehabilitation for these peel. I was down in florida last summer with a guy named ryan who is doing so well now. I am happy to say that he is two years in recovery. He looks fantastic. He is a success story. Ive heard from so many families that they dont have treatment options. He was at a Faith Based Program that he had found in florida. He lives in missouri. Towed travel across the country to find a place to help him rehabilitate and then recover. Is that one of the biggest needs . I would say so. Look, it is not just about treating the addiction per se. But it is all the associated things that could happen. Loss of employment, relationship issues. And i think one other point about the acp, and the article today, is that they want to treat opioid addiction as a chronic disease. And sort of lose that stigma of this is a weakness on the part of individual, but rather, there are, you know, neuro biological changes that result in addiction. If we treat this as a chronic disease, patients can get the help they need and it can be managed with success. Thank you for coming in. That was Hillary Clinton last night speaking at the professional business women of california conference. Highlighting the Testy Exchange between sean spicer and april ryan at the press briefing. Todays briefing had a friendlier tone. April. Why, thank you, sean. How are you today . Im fine. How are you . Fantastic. That was today. Last night, Hillary Clinton focused on womens equality and she did take a few jabs at President Trump as well. I want to bring in the former deputy chief of staff for operations at the white house. Under president obama. She is also author of the new book, who thought this was a good idea and other questions you should have answers to when youre working for the white house. It is a great title. Nice to see you. Let me start with what we just heard from Hillary Clinton last night. You wrote in the book about being a woman in politics and about empowerment and the challenges you faced. What was your reaction . I saw you were listen when you heard her. I was. Everything they said, it is a very fine line for all of us. Youre forceful and people say that you are a witch. And you so sorry, i lost my train. That it is a fine line for women. It is a fine line for women of. Do you think Hillary Clinton should make more appearances . Do you wish she would keep walking in the woods right now . I think she should make more appearances. I think that president obama has stepped back. I think the democrats need some sort of beacon. Not that she is the leader of the party but she can be whatever she wants to be. And she needs to be relevant. And i think that being out there is good for all of us. You used to work for Bernie Sanders way back. Way back. He thinks the Democratic Party needs a top down overhaul. Do you agree . I think it does. I think it is time for democrats to find their identity. I think the last election was kind of good for us. There are a lot of factions should be heard from and should be represented in the Democratic Party. And lets talk about your book a little bit. Do you target in some ways, lessons for younger people, for women who want to get into the crazy world of political strategy. You love lists, right in. I love list you put your lists in the book. I love lists too. Were wired the same way. What is your list for women who want to go far in politics . So one of the nipgs i think is important, not just for women but anyone, is working for someone or something that you believe in. I feel like i was successful because i didnt necessarily chase power or proximity to power. I believed in those people. But just get in there. I think some of the hurdles that i faced were ones that i put up for myself. I psyched myself up. I told myself i wasnt as smart as people in the room because i was younger or a woman. A lot of that i put in on myself. Go in with no pre conceptions of what you are capable of. There are so many Great Stories and anecdotes about wearing jeans when you had to neat pope. You were in the white house for the first 100 days of the obama white house. Yes of. As you sit here now and look at the trump first 100 days, give me your comparison. So one of the things that i have a hard time with is that when we transition in november 2008, the bush2008, the bush fo generous and thoughtful and organized when it came to us and we helped them they helped us, rather, because the transfer of power is so important. When we took over, we didnt dismiss everything they did just because they were the ones who did if. We carefully and thoughtfully looked through procedures and protocols and said, you know what, a lot of this is valely worth keeping. They did a good job. I feel a lot of what the trump folks are doing are killing our initiatives and protocols and the says we did things for sport as opposed to fougthoughtfully considering theyre moworth movg on from. Because they were done under that administration. Her book who thought this was a good idea . Its on sale now. Thanks. Well be back after a quick break. Despite the setback that we got last friday, i think there is a renewed willingness from a lot of members who made commitments to the American People and to their voters that they want to see this done and they understand that not getting this done means, as i said, the president echoed when he went to the House Republican conference, theres going to be a consequence for this. That was sean spicer talking about a renewed willingness to Pass Health Care reform after their bill, of course, was pulled from a bill on friday. House Speaker Paul Ryan made similar comments yesterday after a republican Conference Meeting saying theyre going to continue to work on health care. For more i want to bring in karine jeanpierre, spokespson fo moveon. Org and alex, a former Communications Director for senator marco rubio. Hello to you both. Hi. Hi, kate. Let me start with you, health care. It fell apart last week. Now theyre saying theyre going to be able to do it with the help of democrats. Any chance . I cant imagine that will happen. I mean, look, this is like political whiplash year. First just a couple days ago he says, oh, you know, its in the rearview mirror, health care is in the rearview mirror, its not going to happen, thats too bad, i never wanted to do it in the first place. Now today several days later hes like, its going to be easy, lets try and make it happen. And its just its all rhetoric that he has right now, donald trump, and the thing is, why would democrats even trust that he would put something forth that would work . The plan that they had was so draconian. It took Health Care Away from millions of people. It brought up costs. It hurt the most vulnerable. So why would democrats even trust what he has to say . And he pretty much has been pretty divisive for the last 70 days. Alex, sean spicer spent a few minutes at the briefing today explaining when the president last night said it would be easy, he was joking. Yeah. He was makesing a joke. What do you think, though, about conservative republicans, freedom caucus, moderates coming back together again around a table even if they dont have democratic support, trying to figure something out and hammer something out before they break for recess next week . Is that possible . I think its unlikely. Look, republicans are united around the fact that we want to repeal and replace obamacare. We want to make health care more affordable and more available to more americans. How we do that is very unclear and i think that we ran into the wall last week when we couldnt find enough votes to get it through house which was going to be lighter compared to the senate. So, no, were not going to Pass Health Care reform next week. That said, i dont think republicans want to just give up because it is a problem and it is a promise that they need to deliver on. So would you advise Speaker Paul Ryan right now to kind of give up at the moment . And move on to Something Else . Or what . I think he needs to continue to work on it. Maybe behind the scenes. But i think if you can build a coalition, maybe with some democrats, certainly with the united republican caucus, and bring in some outside groups, get their input. I think if you can do the hard work behind the scenes not necessarily done on version 1 preside 1. 0 of this, there is hope. You cant give upping on onesixth of the economy because you didnt have enough votes after 18 days of trying. Karine, we talked earlier in the hour of another effort at the white house today on the issue of opioids, heroin addiction. The president bringing in Chris Christie, new jersey governor to head up some kind of Advisory Panel or commission to help focus efforts against drug addiction. Do you think thats a good idea, good move . Well, look, its an important issue that needs the resources and needs to be talked about, clearly. The problem that trump has, though, is in the same Republican Health care plan that he supported, it laid out cutting support for opioids by 5 billion. So it already looks like he stepped back from that issue even though he made this announcement and republican governors said, themselves, when they looked at this plan, that it was going to hurt the most vulnerable when it came to drug abuse. So once again, a lot of rhett ri rhetoric, well see. Alex, we shed the video, w the o of them, President Trump and Chris Christie looking friendly, at one point he pats christie on the arm. I dont want to read too much into it, is there a reason were seeing Chris Christie in the white house this afternoon . Could it lead to Something Else . No, i think Chris Christie has wanted a role in this administration the very moment he endorsed donald trump, and obviously hes been left on the outside. He was kicked off of the transition team. So hes been wanting a role and i think hes led on opioid abuse in new jersey, made it a big issue during his president ial campaign. I think its great the Trump Administration is giving this issue the attention it deserves and if they want to reach out to Chris Christie and he thinks he can lead on this, then all the power to him. This is an important issue but i will say, talk is cheap on this. I think they need to see concrete action and concrete proposals about how were going to address this epidemic. All right. Alex conant, karine jeanpierre. Thank you for watching at home. Ill see you back here tomorrow afternoon 3 00 eastern, noon pacific. Always find me as well on snapchat, twitter, instagram, facebook. Topping our agenda right now, it is the senates turn. This was one of the biggest investigations that the hill has seen in my tenure here. Controversy enveloping the houses investigation of russias interference in the u. S. Election. The senate now gets ready to have its first public hearing. Also on the agenda, nothing problematic. Theres nothing that i see that is problematic and him conducting an investigation that we asked both the house and Senate Intelligence committees. It has been one week since devin nunes delivered his bombshell surveillance claims. The question today, though, where is his evidence . And rounding out our agenda, health care again . I know that were all going to make a deal on health care. Thats such an easy one. I have no doubt that thats going to happen very quickly. I th
