Tunnel. Ahead, the nations top Infectious Disease doctor, dr. Anthony fauci will join me on the beginning of this new chapter for this country as america reaches the terrible milestone of 300,000 lives lost and more hospitals say their icus are full. All of this, not the only breaking news as we come on the air. As of the start of this broadcast, electors are beginning to lock in state results in the president ial race. New hampshire set to kick off a process that will lock in joe bidens win as President Trump works to lock down anymore republican support for his push to overturn the results. Well talk about the deadline for that. We begin not with politics but with the pandemic. We have reporters spread out across the country with the latest. Im Hallie Jackson in washington. You can see im joined by Gabe Gutierrez in columbus, ohio. John torez is with us as well. Gabe, youre at a Medical Center setting up for the first vaccines. We have seen one we know of publicly already. That was the one in new york state. We expect to see more potentially as soon as maybe the next 30 minutes. Well bring it to you live if we get it. And there you are. Walk us through what you expect to see where you are. Youre right. We expect to see more of these as the morning goes on to the afternoon. I can tell you within the last hour or so, that u. P. S. Truck arrived and hospital staff here as well as the governor of ohio greeted it. It is the first Coronavirus Vaccine coming here to the state of ohio where the Ohio State UniversityMedical Center, and we expect within the next hour or so that that vaccine will be brought to another building where several Frontline Workers will get vaccinated. We expect between 20 and 30 front line workers to be vaccinated today. More tomorrow. This hospital is getting 975 doses. Actually, just received them. And again, plans to distribute them over the coming days. Now, hallie, this is a hugely significant moment as you know. You saw last hour on msnbc the first public vaccination in new york. Of course, that was the first epicenter of this coronavirus crisis, but here in ohio, it has been ravaged by the coronavirus as have other states throughout the midwest. Youre looking at those pictures from the last hour of that public vaccination. A hugely emotional moment for Frontline Workers across this country who weve been speaking with some of them over the last couple days. Some of them tell us look, you know, they feel even some a little bit of guilt that theyre getting this vaccine first. However, they feel that its hugely important to them to be able to treat to be able to get this vaccine in order to better treat their patients. The reason im looking over my shoulder is that im whats going on behind you . If you walk yeah, first, theres some media here along with us, but that walkway im told that the vaccine is supposed to be walked over from that building to another building. And thats what we expect to see where the vaccines are happening for the Frontline Workers within the next half hour. Significant in ohio. Seeing a huge number of coronavirus cases here. Nearly 200 hospitalizations reported just yesterday. And the Frontline Workers weve been speaking with say they hope this might just be the beginning of the end of this pandemic. Back to you. Gabe, were going to keep you up live here on stand by for us. We want to see if that moment youre talking about happens. It is an emotional moment as gabe talked about, watching that new york nurse get vaccinated, get the shot. Like its nothing. Like its the flu shot. Yaz min, youre at a hospital in rhode island. I have to imagine its emotional and challenging. Theyre not going to get this vaccine at the same time. They cant do that. Reporter it is incredibly challenging. I think some of the challenges that the medical workers are facing is the fact that theres going to be maybe theyre hoping 39,000 doses by the end of the month or 70,000 plus Frontline Health care workers in the state. All the Frontline Health care workers are not getting a vaccine in the month of december despite skyrocketing cases. Theres 466 hospitalized folks right now. 48 people in the icu. 25 on ventilators. You have two field hospitals in the state with 40 plus patients in the field hospitals as well. They think theyre going to have to hope the field hospitals for the next two or three months because of the capacity. Its being pushed to capacity, the health care system. In spite of that, its a happy day. The next 24 hours or so as were seeing vaccines administered in the state. And across the country. And they want to make sure the vaccines are distributed equitably. I want to bring in the director of Clinical Trials at the immunology center. She was also on the Sub Committee that decided this morning and gave the final green light for the vaccines to make a go. Doctor, thank you for joining us this morning. Youre welcome. You guys voted early this morning at 7 30 a. M. And i assume a yes, a go for vaccines to be distributed throughout the state of rhode island. How are you feeling this morning . Really excited. Along with a lot of my colleagues. Reporter what yo r you most worried about . Im not worried. Im excited to start the clinics today. Well see how our Health Care Workers do. Its an organized setup that is safe. Weve given out the correct information. Our Health Care Workers will let us know how theyre feeling. Quickly, a lot of americans are apprehensive in taking the vaccine. Its a fear a lot of folks have in reaching that immunity for the entire country. How do you assure folks this thing is safe . Well, lets start rolling it out, and were not testing it anymore. Were going to be receiving it as Health Care Workers for Health Care Workers and nursing home residents. Nursing home staff. And so far the data weve seen is incredibly good and well continue to see data coming from the Clinical Trials. Thank you. And good luck to you and your staff ahead. And hallie, you heard it. Were going to watch for the administration of the vaccine later today at rhode island hospital. Well watch that vaccine be delivered to the First Health Care worker in the state, and when we see that, well bring it to you. I know you will. Morgan, meantime youre in louisville at a u. P. S. Hub, the first hub for the vaccine shipments before theyre sent out. Weve seen the distribution over the last 24 hours, the moment the trucks rolled out of the plant yesterday. That doesnt end today. That has to keep going for weeks processing hundreds of millions of vaccines for the companies. I think youre in one of the planes that is taking the vaccines to where it needs to go . Reporter yeah. Youre right. And at the world port in louisville. They can go anywhere on the planet. Particularly in what were standing in. This is a boeing 747. One of the larger plans in the u. P. S. Fleet. The shipping containers behind y me, the boxes in containers when they arrive and make the touchdown as we witnessed yesterday in the boeing 757. The first flight arriving here. Once they arrive at this location, theyre take ton a special hangar and sorted out at that location, and thats when they start this massive distribution process. Placed onto other planes. We know that yesterday those planes flew overnight to more than 50 locations. Made their first delivery today. One of the president s of u. P. S. Telling me the very first shipment from u. P. S. Went to a hospital in winston salem, Wake Forest Baptist Health hospital. He says it was flawless. Im holding one of the many tools theyre using to make sure that these doses of vaccines are not compromised at any moment from point a to point b. This is one of those blue tooth devices placed in every one of the boxes. It can monitor not only the location, hallie, but also the temperature, because we know the vaccines have to stay at negative 94 degrees fahrenheit. The boxes they travel in can maintain it for up to 10 days. Morgan, were going to come back to you in about 20 minutes. Thats because at the half hour we expect to see in louisville where you are in kentucky the first vaccinations in that state, public vaccines. Another significant moment. Dr. Torez, youre a Frontline Worker covering this with us. Today i imagine feels significant for you and your colleagues. This is huge, hallie. This is one of the things that weve been waiting for since the beginning of the pandemic. And we knew this would happen. We just didnt expect it to happen this early. If you remember back in february, dr. Dr. Fauci and myself and a lot of people were saying 12 to 18 months to get the vaccine. Were talking february and beyond. Well, now fast forward to the middle of december, the vaccine. Back then we were talking about maybe 70 efficacy, maybe 50 efficacy. Fast forward to now, 95 . This has exceeded expectations not just in timing but in how effective the vaccine looks to be. Its a safe vaccine as well. I think across the country youre seeing Public Health officials with a huge smile on their face thinking okay, were getting it. Were starting to get toward where we need to be. But were not out of the woods yet. We have a ways to go in distribution and timing. Theres also a question about any potential reaction that we may see. This is something we saw in the uk last week with some of the allergic reactions developing over the course of day one. What was there. I imagine that Health Officials are keeping a very close eye on that in this country as well. Hallie, Health Officials are going to keep a close eye not only on allergic reactions which happened in the uk and two individuals. Theyre well treated and its under control. Theyre going to look for the same thing here and look for all sorts of reactions that might happen. They didnt show up in the clinical tries but want to keep an eye on them. This is not unprecedented for any kind of vaccine or medicine. But for most people in the trials, 22,000 people, they usually got muscle aches, maybe pain where they got the shot, fevers, fatigue. Usually it went away in a day or two. It was treated well with acetaminophen. They went away quickly, the symptoms. Overall, this is a safe vaccine with minimal side effects and as you know, an effective vaccine. And were seeing those public testimonials from people like nurse sandra who were looking at in new york city. Got her vaccine last hour. In 19 minutes we expect to see more public vaccinations in kentucky. At the white house theyre watching this closely. President trump has been slowing down the push to try to get white house staffers access to the vaccine. Thats right. Senior white house officials were going to be among the first potentially to get access to this vaccine. Thats what we learned last night, but in a rare reversal, the president tweeted a few hours after that news was reported that he actually was going to request an adjustment be made, and though he wants his aides and staff to be able to get vaccinated, that they shouldnt be having access to those important vaccines in the first go round. Essentially, they will be able to maybe have access to them later. And the president also stressed that he is not at this time scheduled to receive the vaccine. Thats notable, because hes already had coronavirus. So there are some questions about whether he and the first lady and other top staffers who have had it need to get it or when they need to get it. There was backlash after those reports first were issued that white house aides, many of whom have been flouting cdc guidelines who continue to gather at indoor holiday parties were going to be having access to this before other americans. So thats why this ship is so notable from the president. But somebody else having discussions right now about how and when he should get vaccinated is mike pence. The head of the Coronavirus Task force who im told may want to do this in the public fashion. The decisions havent been finalized. But its possible in order to boost Public Confidence that he will do that in the next coming weeks. But we should also point out here, hallie, there are only five weeks left of the Trump Administration. So when the president suggests that white house aides will have access later on, we dont know what that means and were pressing here on what that might happen, but the president clear here that he wants other people to get the vaccine first. So he is also still clamoring for the credit. Monica, gabe, thank you so all of you. Well see some of you later in the show. Dr. Torez, thanks to you. With the country set to the nations leading Infectious Disease expert, dr. Fauci, answers our questions live. And more breaking news. This hour the Electoral College in some states meeting right now and around the country today to formally confirm joe bidens victory. Youre looking live at new hampshire. Theyre getting sworn in. Well take you live to some of the states where this is happening with threats of violence shutting down one states capitol. Weve on the ground in michigan next. But we didnt stop there. We made a cloud flexible enough to adapt to any size business. No matter what it does, or how it changes. And we kept going. So you only pay for what you use. Because at dell technologies, we stop. At nothing. Try optum perks. Its a new way to save up to 80 . And everyone can do it. Its from optum, a Health Care Company thats trusted by millions of people. You dont have to sign up for anything. Just go to optumperks. Com. And get a coupon to use at your pharmacy. Thats it. I opted in. I opted in. You can, too. Opt in and save big today. A live look inside the State Capitol of new hampshire. Thats it on the left side of the screen. The states four electors are meeting to officially cast their ballots for joe biden. So this is a process that happens every four years. It normally doesnt make big headlines. 2020 is not a normal year. Given President Trumps false claims of the stolen election, an election that was not stolen. He lost. Thats going torcon firmed later today when all 50 of the states confirm the votes for joe biden. He is set to speak tonight to acknowledge this moment. Once that is locked in, the results get sent to washington. Congress officially counts the votes january 6th and eve within a few trump loyalists threatening to overturn the Election Results, the chances of that happening are virtually nonexistent. I want to bring in Vaughn Hillyard outside the Michigan State capital. It is closed today because of threats on violence and maybe protests . Whats going on . Reporter youre right. This is the last official day of action here at the state level. Federal law states monday after the second wednesday in december in which the state electors convene at the respective State Capitols to cast the votes for the nominee of which the states vote selected. In michigan the 16 electors will meet at 2 00 p. M. Eastern to cast the votes and then the votes are transmitted to the president s of the u. S. Senate who has Vice President pence, and it is january 6th with both chambers of congress present. The Vice President will tally those Electoral College votes and declare joe biden and Kamala Harris president and Vice President. In hawa in michigan a legislative official said there are Credible Threats of violence here. Thats why members of the senate and house here in michigan were told not to come to work today. The grounds here are closed to the public. You saw the images earlier this summer when armed militias came inside of this capital building. It was just two months ago that 13 men were charged in an alleged kidnapping plot to kidnap the governor, the democratic governor, Governor Whitmer. Those are the circumstances in which the 16 electors will be entering this building with Governor Whitmer here to count the votes. Again, this is the last day of official action here at a state level. Youre seeing the likes of new hampshire, pennsylvania, georgia, arizona casting their Electoral College votes at noon eastern. Wisconsin at 1 00 p. M. Eastern. Michigan here at 2 00 p. M. Eastern. But there is concern here. More protests are expected today. Youll recall last week it was Arizona Republican party that tweeted out the individuals should be prepared to die in defense of seating President Trump as president. This 20 20 election is different than elections past. Usually we dont cover these Electoral College meetings in this sort of capacity, but youve seen protests with armed individuals over the certification of these Election Results and protests of the supreme court, this is just another step in ultimately joe biden and Kamala Harris taking the white house. Vaughn, thank you. Youve been seeing the viewers have on the right side of the screens a tabit that shows when the electoral votes are taking place. Its rolling out throughout the day. Vaughn talked about Battle Ground states locking down their electoral votes. I want to bring in our law analyst, director of government studies and bipartisan policy center. John, thank you for being on the show. Thank you. So lets talk about the process here and what we could see. And there have been some questions about socalled faceless electors. Many most states the electors have to vote for whoever the popular vote, but thats not every state. Are there any cases where they can break away from whats expected . We have seen faceless us electors on occasion. Its possible well see one today. I dont think were going to see the numbers that would change the results. There was some effort in 2016 to really put some pressure on some of the trump electors to change their votes. Thinking of many, many electors switching from joe biden to donald trump seems almost inconceivable, but you could see an individual elector cast a vote as a protest vote. Sometimes theyre putting another name potentially in the hat in case there were not a majority as the house would have to vote on it. Its likely to be something of a trivia question that we might not have quite the count for joe biden and donald trump as we saw before the election, but one or two might defect for some reason. We heard one of President Trumps top advisers Steven Miller out over on fox news this morning saying the only date that really matters he says is january 20th. And that gives us more than enough time to do what we need, overturn the results of this legitimate election. Is there anything that the president could do today while the electoral votes are being cast . This seems like a train headed down the tracks to lock this in. I think it is headed down the tracks. In theory, had there been a second slate of electors, that could have caused more trouble down the road in january when Congress Counts the votes. That doesnt look like its going to happen. And then in january when Congress Counts the votes, perhaps there will be some objections made. Again, i dont really see a way in which the objections are upheld. I think the votes will go ahead as are. In january the house and senate meet as a joint session with the Vice President presiding over this and they open the ballots and approve them essentially. If theres an objection, and we have seen that in recent years. The house might make an objection. One house member. If that objection gets a second from a senator, then theres actually serious consideration. The house and senate split into their own bodies and have to consider the objection. The problem is for donald trump, that both bodies would have to agree to throw out a vote or a slate of electors. We dont expect the democratically controlled house would do that, and im not sure the senate would either. There could be if a house member and senator agree on an objection, this larger consideration. We saw that in 2004 where two democrats objected to george bushs election, but those o. K. S were ultimately not upheld. John, thank you so much for explaining the process there. Weve talked about the process and what were seeing in the states. Lets talk about the states with lee ann wacaldwell. To me its most important because of the pressure. Theres discussion december 14th would be the deadline for when republicans would perhaps say okay, the president s defiance notwithstanding, joe biden is the president elect. Here we are. The president is still defiant, even over this weekend saying this. Watch. Its not over. We keep going and were going to continue to go forward. I worry about the country having an illegitimate president. Thats what i worry about. He doesnt have to worry. The country will not have an illegitimate president in january when president elect is inaugurated. But what are you hearing from specifically Senate Republicans, others on the hill about today . Hey, hallie. This is a question weve been asking Senate Republicans over and over again. When they are going to acknowledge that joe biden is the next president. And the answer they give is that the Electoral College will vote on december 14th. Now, here we are. The question is, though, are the Senate Republicans or republicans on capitol hill, are they going to acknowledge that joe biden is the next president . Were hearing repeatedly, even as recently as yesterday from the number two House Republican that the legal challenges need to go on. They need to go on because half the country does not trust the results of the election. Of course, the people that are saying this are ignoring the fact that the Legal Process has soundly rejected yrkd including the supreme court, the president s legal challenges. Now, there are a handful of Senate Republicans who have acknowledged joe biden as the president. And the latest seems to be senator Lamar Alexander who is retiring, and this is what we said on meet the press yesterday. The states have counted, certified their votes. The courts resolved the disputes. It looks very much like the electors will vote for joe biden, and when they do, i hope that he puts the country first. I mean, the president. That he takes pride in his considerable accomplishments and congratulates the president elect and helps him get off to a good start. The question is will the president take his advice, and will his colleagues take his advice . Senate republicans come back into town this afternoon. This is a question well ask them and watch our inboxes to see if they congratulate joe biden. Hallie . That is for sure. And you have also the wall street journal out with an op ed saying President Trump should conce concede, that he is essentially out of options. Well see how the rest of the day go. Youre watching new hampshire. We expect to see others around noon. Some of the key swing states. Well have that live coverage all day on msnbc. And joe biden is set to deliver remarks at 8 00 tonight when this wraps up. Any moment were also expecting to see new developments in the other major historic moments, story of the day. Vaccinations youre looking at it in the state of kentucky. That is going to be happening any minute. Well bring you there live for that next round of public vax naxs after seeing new york this morning. You also have in person early voting starting today in georgia ahead of the closelywatched senate runoff. Were live on the ground with voters heading to the polls. Up next, dr. Anthony fauci joins us with an update on how this historic morning is going and whats next for americans. Hes the nations most prominent Infectious Disease expert. A role that earned him an open in snl this weekend. We are here to talk about science and facts. Dr. Fauci. Stop throwing bras, would you . Before we talk about taxsmart investing, whats new . Well, audreys expecting. Twins grandparents we want to put money aside for them, so. Change in plans. Alright, lets see what we can adjust. Wed be closer to the twins. Change in plans. Okay. Mom, are you painting again . You could sell these. Lemme guess, change in plans . At fidelity, a change in plans is always part of the plan. [ engine rumbling ] [ beeping ] [ engine revs ] uh, you know theres a 30minute limit, right . Tell that to the rain. [ beeping ] for those who were born to ride, theres progressive. I got it all from you im always pushing through i know well make it to the finish line i know youre waiting on the other side im like you ondemand glucose monitoring. Because theyre always on. Another lifechanging technology from abbott. So you dont wait for life. You live it. We are showing you live louisville, kentucky. That is where the first vaccine in that state is expected to be administered any minute. They are running a couple minutes behind. You can see its where its going to happen. Well bring you there live. It will be the Second Public x vaccination as this continues this morning. Well have more on that in a moment. Were tracking another breaking story this hour. It appears Russian Hackers may have breached the treasury and commerce departments as well as private companies here. Cyber Security Experts are calling it one of the biggest hacks in the last five years. Overnight we returned this. That the top Government Agency in the country issued an emergency directive. They said stop using this product they believe has been compromised. I want to bring in ken delaney. Talk us through what were seeing this morning, where this goes from here. Reporter well, hallie, my sources say that this was likely the russian version of the cia. That carried out the hacks. Cisa issued this dramatic directive. Only the fifth time since 2015 its happened ordering all civilian agencies to stop using this software called solar winds orian. The way the russians got in is they inserted a back door into a Software Update that went out to all their clients allowing them Remote Access to their networks, and they did it in a way that covered their tracks. This is one of the most sophisticated tracks theyve done in a long time. Thats one of the reasons they believe it was the russians. U. S. Officials are 1kr5scramblio figure out what data was taken and what other departments were breached. In the private sector corporations are trying to figure out which of them were victims. This company has customers among most of the fortune 500 and tens of thousands of organizations worldwide. The implications of this could be big, hallie. The good news is two sources said theres no evidence that any classified Government Networks have been breached. Thats the preliminary assessment. Ken dilanian live for us. It wasnt a mistake, we were showing on the other side of the screen not anything having to do with cyber security, but somebody getting vaccinated in new orleans. That was a video. This is how its going to go today. The early vaccinations. If you take a live look, a live stream coming into us from the location where that vax nccinat happened. The Second Public one weve seen. We expect kentucky to follow suit. This is a state by state effort. This is not like what we saw in the uk where there was a patient a. We knew what time that was happening and the person. This is going state by state. We are dipping in as we hear about the states giving vaccinations. We want to show this to you. It is such an important day. It is a day that is the beginning of the end of the pandemic. Although, this pandemic is not over, not even close to it yet. Experts are warning of dark and difficult weeks to come until the vaccines start effecting millions more americans. And millions more people are able to get the shots. Thats one of the breaking stories this morning. The other, of course, is the Electoral College voting happening today. Essentially cementing joe bidens win in the president ial race. Those votes go to congress. Georgia is one of the states where that is happening later on this morning. I want to bring in blaine alexander. You are in georgia. Weve heard from michigan and talked about other states. Thats not the only significant political moment thats going to happen in georgia today. Youre also i believe standing in front of lines for early voting in georgias runoff races that will happen later in january. Reporter a lot going on here today in georgia. Good morning to you. And yes, youre looking at the first day of early voting in the state of georgia. Im standing in cobb county. Let me walk you through and show you this line. This is early voting. This is what early voting looks like so far. Now, i spoke with people early this morning who waited in line for about two hours to cast their ballot. Just to put context around it, it was a cold morning. It was a rainy morning. Raining for the better part of the morning with the lines all the way down there. A lot of people standing in line. The wait times are about 90 minutes max or so. But this is just a glimpse of what were seeing on the first day of early voting. Another bit of perspective on what this enthusiasm is looking like, georgians have requested nearly 1. 2 million absentee ballots. Just to put that into context, thats just shy of the number that we saw at this point leading up to the general election. Certainly a lot of absentee ballots and enthusiasm. What has been fascinating today is to speak to some of these voters out here. You know, i know over the past few weeks weve had conversations about especially for republicans, what this means for republican voters. All the many attacks coming from President Trump, attacking the validity of the georgia election. Will that dreepress turn to out . One voter said hes a strong republican and is supporting senators perdue and loeffler, but heres what he told me about the process. So youve been absentee voting the last few weeks. Youre changing . I am. I dont necessarily trust the absentee voting process. Reporter he says he doesnt trust it anymore. He said the past few elections hes done absentee voting. It doesnt trust it anymore. He tells me he takes everything the president says with a grain of salt. I spoke with a couple on the democratic side who said they waited more than an hour. They were prepared for the rain and cold, and they consider the runoff elections to be an extension to the president ial election, and they say they feel its just adds important. Liver for us in georgia. From politics to the pandemic. Two Trump Administration officials with conflicting timelines for when the average healthy american can walk into their local cvs, drug zero, and get the covid vaccine. Listen. Late february into march, i think youll see much more like a flu vaccination campaign. People going to their pharmacies the general population. Yeah. Yeah. By the end of the month of may or the middle of the month of june, we will have produced enough vaccines, doses to immunize the totality of the american population. Today is a big one for the country with the First Americans getting vaccinated this morning. Weve been showing them to you. This is, again, new orleans. We showed you that a moment ago. Frontline Health Care Workers getting the vaccinations, getting the shots after having served in this pandemic for many, many months now. The first vaccination that we saw, of course, was the Critical Care nurse in new york city. I want to bring in somebody who has been working on this issue intensely for months now. On this risk day, im pleased to bring in dr. Anthony fauci. Dr. Fauci, good morning to you. Good morning. Good morning. How is day one going so far . Any hiccups youve heard of so far . No, not really. As you were alluding to, its entha somewhat of a historic day to get vaccine into the arms of people in a tame fraim thats unprecedented. About 11 months from the time we first got the genetic sequence of the virus on january 9th or 10th, to have done Clinical Trials involving tens of thousands of people with the pfizer product that you see being injected right there on the screen. That had 44,000 people in the trial. The moderna which is right behind literally a week or so behind had similar results of 94, 95 efficacy. Soon will be likely in the same position as the pfizer. So this is really all good news. It really goes to show how science well done can really ultimately get us out of a very, very difficult situation were in with this pandemic. And were going to talk about this. Were not totally out of it yet, but it is i think a light for so many people. I should new england were about to see a mass vaccination as were talking in columbus, ohio. Were going to show that as were having this conversation. You can see the people, many of them Frontline Workers getting ready for the vaccination. As youre Monitoring Progress today, dr. Fauci, will you look for and how concerned are you about the potential for side effects that are maybe abnormal . We know there are going to be normal side effects. Thats expected. We saw a couple patients have allergic reactions after vaccinations in the uk. What are you watching for . The same thing. Well, you have tens of thousands of people knit triin the trials. We did not see any adverse effects. Sore arm, some muscle aches, maybe a little malaise, fever that usually doesnt last any more than 24 to 46 36 hours. With regard to severe adverse events, thats the reason why when you go from tens of thousands to about millions of doses today, so when you get that many people, you want to make sure you keep a heads up for the occurrence of any adverse events that you did not see in the trial. You mentioned in the uk they had two allergic reactions that were significant, and thats the reason why theyre saying now if you have a history of severe allergic reactions, either dont get the vaccine right now or do it in a place where they can respond to the allergic reaction. This is all part of the normal process of the observation for adverse events that occur well after the end of the trial and into the administration to the general population. Its a good thing, because that means were on the alert with heads up for the possibility of adverse events. Lets talk about timeline and timing here. We just heard in the introduction to you, sir, two different timelines from two different officials working on the pandemic. For when regular healthy americans can go into sort of their local pharmacy, get the vaccine like you might get a flu shot. Secretary azar said it looks like early march. Another doctor said it looks like may and june. Where on that spectrum is it really . You know, we dont know for sure, but its somewhere i was just going to say, hallie, that had you not shown those two comments from the secretary and from the other doctor, i was saying sometime at the end of march, beginning of april. You know, it really is going to depend on the efficiency of the rollout, the number of people that actually come forth. The Advisory Committee on immune z ization practices has put out the priority list. The First Priority list is what youre seeing on the screen. Frontline Health Care Providers and people in Nursing Homes and those caring for those in the Nursing Homes. Then the eld lerly and people wh underlying conditions. Depending on the efficiency, its anywhere within the bracket you heard. I had been saying by my calculations, sometime by the end of march, the beginning of april that the normal healthy man, woman in the street who has no underlying conditions would likely get it. At tend of the day, the real bottom line is when do you get the majority, the overwhelming majority of the population vaccinated so you can get that umbrella of herd immunity . I believe if were efficient about it and convince people to get vaccinated, we can accomplish that by the end of the Second Quarter of 2021. Namely, by the end of the late spring, early summer. I believe we can get there by then so by the time we get into the fall, we can start approaching some degree of relief where the level of infection will be so low in society we can start essentially approaching some form of normality. That doesnt mean we can stop wearing masks, or does it . When does it start to look like the before times when we go to concerts and eat indoors without worries . That may take several months into the second half and beyond of 2021. I believe you alluded to it correctly when you said, and ive actually said this every day and written about it. That a vaccine right now is not a substitute for the normal standard Public Health measures of wearing a mask, keeping your distance, avoiding crowded sections, particularly indoors. Its not a substitute. It complements it only when you get the level of infection in society so low that its no longer a Public Health threat can you then think about the possibility of pulling back on Public Health measures. But certainly were not anywhere near there yet. Right. You had said you would get vaccinated publicly, dr. Fauci. Any update on when . You know, i dont. Im going to wait to see. Were getting a shipment, maybe i already have a shipment here on the nih campus. As soon as my turn comes up, which likely will be very soon, im going to be available to get vaccinated publicly so that people can see that i feel strongly that this is something we should do and hopefully that will encourage many more people to get vaccinated. Do you get the sense that could be maybe within the next or next couple weeks . No, it could be within the week. I would imagine it could be within the next week, and then maybe at the latest the next couple weeks, yes. Okay. I have about five minutes left with you, and 55 more questions. Let me do a lightning round for you on some of the facts i think people want to know. We talk about the fall. Kids going back to school. You said trials for kids could start in january. Do you think we could be ready to vaccinate children in time for the start of the school year 2021 . I believe we can if we officially get people vaccinated the way weve been talking about now. I think we can, but i also want to say that even if we dont get all the children vaccinated, we still should have physicians getting the children back into school, because we know of the risks in school of getting infected is relatively low. Bottom line, i believe well get there with vaccinations, but even if we dont, we should try to get the children back to school. We just watched the mass vaccinations at Ohio State University. In ohio were looking live at hartford, connecticut. The pace is picking up. What about the issue of skepticism . Its being reported a rush effort to get a Public Education campaign to get people know this is safe. This is why the public vaccinations are happening. Why you committed to taking one publicly. Yet, here we are with the Trump Administration not having done that sooner. I know youre quoted in that piece. What kind of an impact does that kind of delay have . Zl we want to do as much as we can to reach out to the community to explain to people why its so important for them to get vaccinated. Im spending a considerable amount of my time particularly reaching out, for example, to minority communities who have skepticism about anything that has to do with the federal government program. Were trying our best. Im on as much media as i possibly can, as well as my colleagues. You know, Surgeon General jerome adams and others out there very frequently talking about the need to get vaccinated. So we are putting up pretty aggressive push to getting out there with the messages that i believe are important to get people to appreciate why they should get vaccinated. What about the messaging from the president and the president and the president elect, have you spoken with are President Trump, a, lately since the vaccines were approved over the week independent and, end, and have you urged him to get it publicly . Sounds like he is not immediately planning to do that. I have not spoken to the president of late. His physicians in the white house i know well, and i believe that they will be speaking to the president is about the visibility about getting v vaccinated. But not something i have been directly involved in. Was it the right thing for the president to basically delay the plan to fast track the vaccine for senior staffers . What do you mean . Im not sure he delayed anything. Well, there was a push to potentially get the senior government officials named ascension worke as essential workers to get them the vaccine, President Trump seemed to pump the brakes on that saying we dont need to have those folks jump the line. Yeah, i think that that is understandable and reasonable. I mean, i havent spoken to the president about that. But there was when you said elderly, i was wondering, you are talking about white house ner personnel. Staffers, yes. White house staffers. I think what the president meant, he would not want to give the impression that they were jumping ahead of the line. But they are in discussions with that. I dont think that i can adequately comment about it because i have not been in on those discussions. Ten seconds left. Has joe biden been offered a vaccine . That is under discussion about when the president elect will take it. Im certain that he will get vaccinated, i think that it is a question of when he will come th do that and were in discussions with that. Dr. Fauci, a historic day. Before i let you go, we saw a little clip of Kate Mckinnon playing you on snl. Do you prefer her impression of you or brad pitt . They were both very good. Kate mckinnon is an amazing actor. I was cracking up when i was watching it. Very cool. Dr. Anthony fauci, so glad to have you on the show. I know you have to go, we appreciate your time. A lot of news from dr. Fauci there, including that he himself will likely be publicly be vaccinated possibly within the next week. And well talk more as we keep an eye on the vaccinations happening live across the country. A site, a scene that people have been desperate for for months. A sign that hope is now on the way. Obviously this is all happening now, were relying on a system of cameras across the country to be able to see some of these vaccinations happening. These are Health Care Workers, the front leline workers who ha been putting their lives on the line for hontss. This as the u. S. Expected to hit 300,000 people dead. The pandemic is getting worse in this country and tennessee is no exception. On sunday, that state hit a record high of more than 11,000 new cases. Another 62 people have died. And the state has also seen a rise in cases involving kids. More of them are being hospitalized with covid and an immune reaction that causes inflammation in the organs. Dasha burns is in tennessee. You had exclusive access to the only Childrens Hospital in the reek on, talk to us broke what you saw. Reporter the head of the Childrens Hospital here tells me they are now seeing three to five children a day at this hospital either with covid19 or misc. And although those rates are much lower for kikids than adul was surprised. But the reality is when you have a high rates of spread in the community, in this part of appalachian, the Positivity Rate is when 2about 26 . And so that does trickle down to kids. Particularly in an area like this where you also have high levels of underlying conditions, a lot of kids with asthma here already a respiratory condition. And i met the father of an 11yearold boy named isaiah, he was hospitalized here for misc, he is now covering. But i want you to listen to his dads experience. Id rather be him in the bed than him at any point. And for him to be in that bed, it is eyeopening. You know, it hits one out of every five kids. You never think that it will be you until its you. Reporter and the good news is that kids are much more resilient to this virus, they will recover much more quickly than adults, they are more likely to recover. But they are not invulnerable. And they can also spread this virus. This area has a lot of nontraditional family structure, which means a lot of kids getting raised wouldby their grandparents or great grandparents. So this not a time to let up on the preventive measures, masks and social distancing. Mr. And that is a he. And that is a message were hearing from also national Public Health experts including dr. Fauci who reminded everybody, yes, this is an important day, but it does not mean that we are able to lets up on our mask wearing, on our social distancing anytime soon. Those are important words of guidance to remember. Dash tha burns, thank you. And i thank all our guests. I appreciate you watching. Check out the highlights on our twitter page. Right now ill turn it over to Chris Jansing who has so much more coverage of both the pandemic and the political implications of the Electoral College vote. It will be a very business is i d busy day. Right now, can we simply say what a morning. With major developments for those two stories that have dominated most of 2020, the coronavirus and the election. We have to start in new york where just 90 minutes ago, the very first dose of the Pfizer Vaccine in that state was address ministered to a nurse working in yeens. This is a full circle moment. The dose in the arm of nurse sandra vind is juis an lindsey is just the first step forward. I feel hopeful today. I feel like healing is
