Hearing is about to begin any minute for the teen suspected of killing two people who were protesting the Kenosha Police shooting of a black man. After another night of peaceful protests, new details on that confrontation. And new questions about why jacob blake, according to his father, has been handcuffed to his hospital bed. Also new this morning, the postconvention campaign, where President Trump is heading today after blasting joe biden in the most ominous of terms. At times inflating his own record in front of a crowd of 1500, in his speech accepting the republican nomination. The breaking news on convention infections. The positive tests were just new learning that are coming out of the rnc this week. Today show exclusive, craig melvin spoke with joe bidens running mate Kamala Harris. I have yet to see these people who profess to be National Leaders speak about this issue of the killing of unarmed black men. Im Hallie Jackson in washington. With nbcs Shaquille Brewster in kenosha for us this morning to start on the breaking news. Talk to us about what is about to happen at this extradition hearing involving that 17yearold shooting suspect. Reporter that hearing will begin any minute now. We know hes in custody now, Kyle Rittenhouse 17yearold man who is accused of shooting and killing two protesters on tuesday night and injuring a third. Hes facing about six charges right now including intentional homicide, reckless homicide, Reckless Endangerment and possession of a deadly weapon. Well expect to see him in court any minute now. But overnight, hallie, we got a statement from his attorney, who says that this is a classic case of selfdefense and theyre promising to fight for him and provide justice for him no matter despite how long it takes is what his attorney is saying. Any minute now, we expect to see more from expect to see that hearing begin and well expect to hear more about what happened that tuesday night when kyle was accused of killing two people. Hallie . And were also hearing this morning, shaq, from jacob blakes father, who is making who is saying extraordinarily that blake, he says, has been shackled to his hospital bed. Can you tell us more about that, what police are saying . Reporter well, his father was on had an interview earlier today. He is in washington, d. C. Right now, where there is that march on washington and he explained that first. Mr. Blake is in the hospital now, hes holding on, but he said hes fighting for his life, but he explained what really disturbed him when he went to visit his son, a couple of days ago. Listen to that exchange. Hes paralyzed from the waist down, why do they have closed steel on my sons ankle . He cant get up. He couldnt get up if he wanted to. So what was thats a little overkill to have him shackled to the bed. That just makes no sense to me. Reporter now, we have reached out to the family attorney, benjamin crump, to see what is going on there, why this these shackles may be there. The attorney has not reached has not responded to our request for comment just yet. But i think that just goes to show the pain and the outrage that youve been seeing, you see the pain from the father right there. Were also hearing new information about the original shooting itself, from the attorney general who is heading this investigation and we know that it is a state investigation. The new statement now naming all three officers involved. We knew that officer Rusten Chesky was the officer who fired the seven shots into the back of mr. Blake, but were also learning that he first deployed his taser when he first arrived on the scene. We also know the name of officer vincent arenas, he unsuccessfully deployed his taser when they first rived and tried to conduct an arrest of mr. Blake. We also have the name of officer britney marinac, not clear her role in the situation, but naming her as someone when was involv involved in the shooting. Hes still fighting for his life. Shaq brewst, stay close to the cam are to give us an update once this Court Proceeding it over. We understand it should be quick, so we expect to have that live this hour. Shaq brewster, thank you. Were in the final sprint to election day with breaking news after back to back political conventions. First, President Trump is heading to New Hampshire today, joe biden said hes going to do some traveling in battleground states post labor day. Were now learning from North Carolina a county there confirming some attendees of the rnc events in charlotte have tested positive for the coronavirus. I want to bring in Kelly Odonnell from the white house. You can see that tweet there. Nbc news political reporter monica alba and Pulitzer Prize winning Washington Post columnist msnbc contributor and friend of our show eugene robinson. Thank you for being here. Kelly, we showed mecklenburg county, some in charlotte have tested positive. What more can you tell us if anything . Reporter we looked to these convention periods and looked for a post convention bounce and now we have to add the component of assessing the Health Fallout from these gatherings. What mecklenburg county, North Carolina, is telling us, there were nearly 800 tests conducted, four positive tests. What we dont know is how quickly those who were notified of testing positive were given the information about how to isolate, and how to separate from others. We dont know if there was an opportunity for additional spread among those who tested. Now, that rate is considered low, but, again, we have positives coming out of the gathering where the rnc chose to have their delegates, and some of their official business conducted in person. We did not see that on the democratic side. And it immediately raises the question of what will be the fallout if any from the south lawn last night, where we saw almost no social distancing, and very few masks. Masks were a rarity last night as you know from being there on the south lawn, with more than a thousand people for a period of hours. The president spoke for little more than an hour, but there were many hours required of the majority of attendees. And we know there was some testing done, we dont have the specifics, about who was tested, or how many tests were conducted. Presumably based on the information from officials, those closest to the president , for example, if there was opportunity for the president to greet some of the officials or donors or some of the guests that those people who would have an interaction would be tested. To give you a sense also of the president s tone, and the way he is forecasting what comes next, harsh words about joe biden as democratic rival, as he outlined his argument against the democratic nominee, and it was in very harsh and stark terms. Here is an experimecerpt from t president from last night. No time before have voters faced a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies, or two agendas. Joe biden is not a savior of americas soul. He is the destroyer of americas jobs and if given the chance he will be the destroyer of american greatness. Reporter and the president will take some of those themes on the road today, going to New Hampshire, one of the battleground states and a place where he had a canceled rally which we believe was canceled in part due to covid and some threat of a storm that didnt materialize at that time. So it is a make good for New Hampshire this evening. Where the president begins his postc post convention travel. Hallie . Monica, you were at charlotte. On the show, covering this together, 10 00 in the morning when the roll call was going down with the delegates. Can you talk about what you saw there and have you i know you reached out to the campaign on this, right . Anything yet officially from the Trump Campaign on the positive covid tests . We Vice President heard from the campaign or from the Republican National committee. I reached out to both of those entities, but you have the county coming out and confirming them. This is something privately republican officials were worried about on the ground because of this in person gathering. It was the largest indoor gathering in charlotte and i think in the state of North Carolina, really since the pandemic began. And it was so notable that the attendees before the program got under way were not really wearing their masks. We had reporters in the room who were looking for all of this important color as you have a convention and Health Crisis colliding at the same time. And when they the proceedings did finally start, we did see the delegates wearing masks. And it was a crowd of about 336 of them. And then you had maybe 60 or 70 staffers in the room, what were learning is that as part of the entire convention, they tested about 800 people who were a part of either organizing this, you have the security, you have to think about this large footprint, and really the irony of all of this, the president wanted a convention with 19,000 people in charlotte, and because the democratic governor there roy cooper couldnt guarantee that without social distancing and masks, thats why he had to really move it to florida. Then they had to cancel it because of the covid cases in jacksonville and this is what you were left with. Even this smaller event clearly yielding some cases and you have to ask, based on last night, more than 1500 people almost shoulder to shoulder where you were there on the south lawn, there is a very strong possibility something similar could happen because you had so few masks. That was outdoors versus this event in charlotte indoors, the risk as well. Thats an added element, but we dont have official comment yet and these are only the first few cases, of course, there could be more as they do Contact Tracing and find out who else they may come into contact with. We have an expert coming up later on the show and asking some of the questions youre bringing up, monica. I appreciate that. Monica alba, Kelly Odonnell, thanks to both of you. I want to turn to eugene robinson. Good to have you back on the show, so good to see you. Great to be here, hallie. Welcome back. Thank you. Let me get your overall reaction to what we have seen over the last really two weeks here. The battle lines are clearly drawn. What was striking about the president s speech last night as we were there, the crowd sort of felt like they were ready for a rally. The president delivered what felt like kind of like a state of the union address, right . But the apocalyptic and stark terms he warned joe biden is the architect of this extremist policy, who will he quite literally said who could give you heart attacks and create depression, the terms were so ominous there. Yeah, well, lets look at the whole two weeks. First we have seen two National Political conventions, the likes of which we have never seen before. Never seen the sort of Virtual Conventions before where you dont have a big gathering, and you dont have, you know, a host city filled with people and a host state that is that is potentially in play because of the convention and this and that. And you have most people always saw the convention on television, but we have no idea what to expect the political impact to be from the conventions this year. We have never seen them done like this. So should biden get a bump, trump get a bump, nobody gets a bump . We just dont know. Thats the first thing. Second thing is, you know, the democratic convention, clearly tried to showcase number one the nations diversity and the partys diversity and to and to look at the overlapping crises that the country is dealing with. The pandemic, the economy, Racial Justice and systemic racism, and to exploit how joe biden and Kamala Harris would deal with these problems. The Republican Convention tried to do two sort of contradictory things. On the one hand, it tried to say that everything is great. Under donald trump. And, you know, dont mind the pandemic and all this stuff. However, look around you and look at all this violence in the cities, and that is joe bidens america, if you elect him. So dont elect him, stick with trump. It is contradictory because donald trump is president now. And if things are so bad, one might ask why dont you fix them. Why dont you do something about the pandemic, do something about the violence and the cities. Rather than just blaming it on joe biden who is not in power. But, you know, thats their play and we dont know. It could have an impact, it could have an impact on the market, a look at the swing states, look at wisconsin in particular, just a lot of this is happening, wisconsin is the state for both parties right now, maybe the ultimate swing state. And well have to see on how the events of the past week really play politically in wisconsin. Were watching a couple of minutes here, you geneugene, a that is supposed to start at the Lincoln Memorial. Senator Kamala Harris will appear virtually and speak to this audience. She spoke exclusively with our own craig melvin who will be up the next hour with more on this. I want to play you a bit of what she had to say as she came out with counterprogramming ahead of the president s speech. Listen to this. Compared to rncs past, there seems to be a larger number of black men front and center. What is the case for them to show up in a few weeks for you and mr. Biden . First of all, every vote needs to be earned. And joe and i believe that. So when we look at the condition of black men in america, we know we still have a whole lot of work to do, we have talked about it in regard to policing in the criminal justice system, but lets talk about the realities of the fact that every man including every black man wants to be able to take care of his family. Sources i talked to in and around the trump cap pampaign p to the fact that they are trying to make inroads with black men specifically. Do you think they have a shot at that . I kind of doubt it. I dont think theyll have much of a shot. I think, you know, black men in particular feel especially vulnerable these days to police violence, sort of the subject of this of a lot of this discussion going on. I dont think that plays in President Trumps favor. But the other part of the sort of the other purpose of this sort of parade of africanamericans and africanamerican men at the convention, the Republican Convention, was to reassure suburban white voters that donald trump is not a racist. Thats the case theyre making. Making the case hes not a racist, this is not a racist administration. For voters who might on the margins who might be gettable for trump, but who draw the line at the racism and so theyre trying to sort of soften that edge for some voters, they think they might get. Yeah. Eugene robinson, a pleasure to have you on the show. Thank you very much for being with us. I appreciate it. Want to get back to that breaking news, the extradition hearing we talked about at the top of the show that the teenage suspect, so, shaq brewster, youre there in kenosha, i understand the hearing is over. What happened . Reporter it was obviously a very quick hearing, it was all virtual, on zoom. Most of it didnt even go through, seemed to be some technical issues. What we found out is that the hearing has been waved. This was an extradition hearing. Kyle rittenhouse is in Police Custody in illinois. The hearing has been waved at this point for 30 days, so well expect to see him in court on september 25th. At this point, his attorneys did not opt to or did not choose to request or request that his sorry, let me be clear, his attorneys did not decide to wave his extradition at this hearing. So extradition hearing, his attorneys instead of deciding to wave his hearing, they requested that the hearing be postponed for a month. Thats the latest as we know, hallie. Got it, shaq, thank you for that quick update from kenosha, wisconsin. We have more to get to at this hour, including what might be a covid testing game changer at the white house. The game was postponed as players walked off the field in a second day of player protests across a bunch of professional sports leagues. Youve got the nba, the wnba leading the way, now reportedly planning to restart playoffs as leagues and teams talk about what happens next. The nfl and Nfl Players Association saying we will continue to not only use our collective platform to call out racism and injustice whenever and wherever it occurs in our country, but also fight together to eradicate it. Miguel almaguer is in los angeles with more on this. No word yet, officially, right, on plans from the nba for games this weekend . Yeah, still in official word, but everyone does believe in the sources are indicating that tipoff will likely take place tonight, perhaps on saturday, but the playoffs will eventually resume. So many of these athletes are turning to activism and out in nba says before they play again, they will make their message clear. From the Basketball Court to the baseball field, athletes across nearly every professional sport refusing to play, following sundays shooting of a black man, jacob blake, by a Wisconsin Police officer. We need to understand that when most of us go home, we still are black. Reporter nba players who refuse to take the court for playoff games on wednesday will be become on the court this weekend. But they Say Something has to change. According to espn, the nba Players Association working on a direct action plan, to hold police accountable, increase voter accessibility and support the george floyd bill. In baseball, a sport not known for on field activism the mets and marlins will not be playing baseball tonight. Reporter the new york mets and Miami Marlins walking off the field after observing a moment of silence lasting 42 seconds, in honor of jackie robinson, a black lives matter shirt left on home plate. At least nine nfl teams canceled preseason practices thursday, to discuss social justice issues. The new Orleans Saints held practice, but players including drew brees wore jacob blakes name on their helmets. Man, we love our game. We love the game that we play. But our communities are under siege and we cant have a blind eye to it. Reporter the loud messages being sent by nba athletes getting this reaction from President Trump. They become like a political organization, and thats not a good thing. I dont think thats a good thing for sports or for the country. Reporter on wednesday, tnt analyst and former nba star kenney smith walking off the set. As a black man, as a former player, i think it is best for me to support the players and just not be here tonight. And one of the biggest stars and certainly one of the nbas biggest stars, lebron james says this is not a movement, this is now a way of life. Hallie . Miguel almaguer, live for us in los angeles. Good to see you on the show. Thank you for that reporting. I want to bring in retired nba player eton thomas, the author of we matter a athletes and activism. Put in words how big of a moment this is for you as a former nba player, for your friends still playing . It is a huge moment. People are concerned the games are going to start or not, but they have to understand the real reason why they had the boycott in the first place. First of all, that a black man should not have to be perfect in order to be viewed as human. Thats number one. I mean, and, you know, if you can justify jacob blake being shot in the back, after trying to break up a fight after two women, because the fact he had a knife in his car, a knife, they didnt even know about, and, you know, at the same time, out of the same mouth, you champion and support a white Kyle Rittenhouse murdering two people and Walking Around with an ar15 on his shoulder, right past police and youre okay with that. You know what happened to me or lebron james or Kawhi Leonard or westbrook if we walked anywhere in america with an ar15 on our shoulders, open carry state or not, it wont euldnt end well any of us. You heard the president there in miguels piece, in his briefing yesterday talk about how he thinks it is not beneficial for pro sports leagues to become as he put it political activism centers. What do you make of that . It is interesting to, you know, the same people who have the audacity to take the moral high ground to claim to be christians, you any who attack joe biden not being enough, whatever that means, the same people who support donald trump. Who, you know, if we go into his priors, pretty long list. Hes been accused of some kind of sexual crime against women more than 20 times . Including a 13yearold girl. Hes paying off mistresses, dealing with prostitutes, literally represents every single one of the seven deadly sins, all of them. So, youre not in a moral position to take any kind of moral high ground on anything. But, still, you do, and it is that thats the definition of a hypocrite. And it is not just Jerry Falwell jr. , the entire republican conservative evangelical party. I want to talk about your new piece in the guardian, we should note President Trump denied some of the allegations you mentioned. You write about how elgin baylor, this gets to the reason for the boycott, as you see it, writes how elgin baylor provides a blueprint for how current nba players can employ boycotts as a method to bring about change, by pressuring nba ceos to use their power. Explain that a little bit. How you see that as do you see that as what players are doing now . Definitely. Against your comment before, 20 times he didnt necessarily deny all 20 of them. He denied some of them. I think the players now who are using their voice and using their power are doing it collectively, they have an opportunity to do something really special now. Now you have to push for more. You have to push for i know everybody wants to say when are they going to play again . What is playing going to resume . I wrote another piece in the guardian, was urging for nba players to push ceos, i dont call them owners for obvious reasons, ceos, the mark cubans and all of them to be able to put pressure on the cities where they play. So for instance, here in d. C. , he has power in d. C. In florida, we know the situation in florida, like everything that bad happens usually happens in florida. But Mickey Erickson has power to be able to push the city to push the Police Department to say that, okay if you do not adopt these sensible police reforms, police accountability, that we will withhold funds from you. And Everybody Knows that what makes the world go around . They would react immediately and you could see impact immediately. Thats what im pushing for players to do, push for more. Were almost out of time. Have you can you tell us anything about the conversations you had with your friends, other players, beyond that, what are they saying, what is the thinking now, this morning . The thinking now it is interesting, a lot of thinking. I have to give a lot of props to people like kyrie irving, and Avery Bradley and Dwight Howard who mentioned this earlier. I wrote an article that came up this morning on a news cycle, basketball news. Com, i called for stephen a. Smith and charles barkley, specifically, to offer public apologies to kyrie irving. They lambasted them when they first came out with a notion of boycotting or work stoppage or not going into the bubble. They called it names like foolish and made it seem completely absurd for them to do what theyre doing but they offer their praises. The world is seeing they have everyones attention now. You just showed before, the mlb, and mlb is not known for its activism. The fact for them all to be able to make that statement, together, i think it really means something. Youre seeing a real special time right now in sports. Etan, a real pleasure to have you on the show. Thank you for joining us this morning. We appreciate it. Were talking more about the number of new coronavirus infections, over 50,000 for the first day in almost two weeks. Former assistant secretary for health and Human Services under president obama joins me on that, on the positive tests that the rnc this week and potentially Game Changing rapid covid test. First, some breaking news out of asia this morning, japanese Prime Minister shinzo abe is stepping down from his position. Abe announced the news in a press conference, saying an ongoing battle with kitcolitis. He said he didnt want his Chronic Health problems to get in the way of his decisionmaking. He is the longest serving Prime Minister in japans history. Previously resigned in 2007 after a flareup with the same condition. Hell stay in office until a successor is chosen. N office una successor is chosen. Come on in, were open. All we do is hand you the bag. Simple. Done. We adapt and we change. You know, you just figure it out. Weve just been finding a way to keep on pushing. Now to the latest on the coronavirus pandemic, starting with a Big Development in testing. The white house is announcing a deal to produce 150 million rapid coronavirus tests. Those tests cost just about 5 bucks, deliver results in 15 minutes, without the use of any lab equipment. And as we learned in the last hour, four people at the rnc in charlotte monday tested positive for the virus. Two were attending the event. Two were working at it. County Officials Say they were isolated immediately. And across the country, as of this morning, nearly 6 million americans have been infected, more than 181,000 have died from the virus. Dr. Howard ko served as assistant secretary for health in the obama administration. Thank you for being with us today. Thank you, hallie. Lets start with the rnc news that is coming out for us this morning. Four people testing positive at the rnc in charlotte, it is raising some questions about what we saw last night on the south lawn, where i was, 1500 people, no social distance, very few masks in the audience. Talk through what kind of significance you see from the news that came out of charlotte from monday and where we go from here as it relates it the crowd last night. It is very difficult to reconcile the incidents from last night with what we know about what will save lives with respect to prevention and Public HealthGoing Forward. We know that large gatherings increase risk. We know that if you dont social distance, you increase risk and we know the life saving potential of masks now. We dont have a vaccine, so masks are the best vaccine that we have. So those images last night are very tough to accept and we need to do better as we go forward into this fall. We have flu season coming and we may have a second wave of covid coming as well. We need to maximize prevention and Public Health right now. Can you explain, though, it was outdoors and experts have said there is seems to be a less likely risk of transmission outdoors than indoors. Youre in the open air, more dispersal potential for the aerosolized viral particles, is it about the image it presents of being at the white house, about the actual risk of infection, and do those same risks go into effect for protesters outside the white house who may or may not be wearing masks. No doubt that being outdoors is better than being indoors and thats where the ventilation issues for indoor settings like schools and colleges Going Forward are very, very important. Again, we just cant assume anything right now. We have close to 6 million cases on the horizon for covid right now. And we have about a thousand deaths a day through the month of august, over 180,000 as you have noted. So we just have to maximize all aspects of prevention and Public Health now as we go forward. The testing purchase by the Trump Administration that we have been reporting on here the atlantic says it could bring in a new era of coronavirus testing and maybe transform that landscape. Do you see this as a potential game changer . So one of the challenges of the Pandemic Response has been the gap between supply and demand for testing. The good news is that testing supply has gone up over a month, but the bad news is that the demand has gone up even higher so this announcement is an important one, it could close the gap and very importantly it is our rapid antigen test so the turn around time is very short. Hopefully if people can have access to the tests, they wont have to have the delays that they have endured in the past. But were not going to see these tests potentially until october and we need to do everything we can to maximize supply and demand right now. Very quickly, im almost out of time, we heard the president predict a covid19 vaccine would be available by the end of 2020. What is the reality check there . Everybody hopes for a effective and safe vaccine as soon as possible. I want it thank all the scientists and researchers who have been involved in that process for so long, so many around the world. But there is a lot of scientific uncertainty in this whole process. So we have to rely heavily on the data and the science Going Forward. And right now we need the agencies like fda to have the highest levels of science and data and standards for before any vaccine is approved and submitted to the u. S. And to the world. Dr. Howard ko, thank you for your expertise and for being here. It has been 57 years since the historic march on washington. Were live at the Lincoln Memorial where americans are gathering to call for police reform, voting reform at the same spot where dr. Martin lu l luther king jr. Spoke six decades ago. The transformer is over here, this massive tree has been uprooted from this house, throughout this neighborhood. It is a very it is a lush neighborhood, a lot of trees. Look at all of the damage, almost every house has some sort of tree down or some sort of damage in the street. This one, it has gone right into the roof. Either people have lost trees or they lost their roofs or they got trees through the roofs and part of the problem is you can see, just moments ago, it was a heavy downpour. We have storms to the east of me, all through this area. Right along the line that the storm went. Were in sulfur, louisiana, the eye of the storm came directly over us on its way north into northern louisiana and then into arkansas. So while the recovery is continuing, people are getting hampered by these heavy rains. In most cases power is out because of all of the power lines that are down. We have seen literally thousands of electrical workers around here, with their bub cket truck staged, ready to go. The winds are down. We also just learned well hear from Vice President ial candidate Kamala Harris, she will be appearing virtually. I want to bring in Morgan Radford who is there. Tell me what youre seeing and what we can expect today. To give you a sense of scale, were seeing tens of thousands of people here in the crowd at the Lincoln Memorial. As you mentioned, were hearing from activists, were hearing from pastors, the people who are really giving the heart and the soul of the speeches were hearing today are people who have lost family members to violence and to police brutality. So i would like to bring in alicea finley, her brother was shot and killed by a Police Officer in his home in dallas, texas. Youre about to speak here in a moment. What is it that you hope happens after today . I hope that this march, because it is bringing families together, it is bringing life to police brutality, and how many thousands of families that are affected, i hope it brings energy to everyone to do something and to want to make change. I hope it also gets to persons who have the ability to change the laws and change legislation to have the laws in place that make us all equal instead of having black people lose their lives on a daily basis, white people are being taken into custody, i hope it brings us on an equal playing field. We caught up with alicea when we did the stories about sisters of the movement, shes part of a group of women, you may have seen it a month ago, did an exclusive interview where you talked about the pain you felt collectively. For the people that are critical of the black lives matter movement, what do you think it is that they dont understand that you would like what do you think they dont understand those who are critical of this movement, that you would like to share . I think they dont understand the impact it has on the black community. A lot of people look at it from just their perspective, if youre white and you know that your family doesnt stand a chance of being shot and killed just by being in their home, or just by a routine traffic stop, they wouldnt understand. We have been through it. So we know exactly what were going through, we grieve for every family that goes through that, we lived their trauma. Thats the thing you live with, and carry every day. Thats part of the pain and the collective pain, youre hearing now, 57 years later, hallie, when people are marching for the same fight, the same fight for justice and equality. Morgan radford live for us there on the mall. Thank you. I want to bring in britney patton cunningham, msnbc contributor. Great to have you on the show. Great to be back. You are a virtual speaker for todays event. Talk to us about your message what you hope people hear from you and others today. Well, i hope that people remember that now is a time for transformation. And it is up to all of us to make that happen. This is not just the 57th an versusry of the march on washington for jobs and freedom. It is also 65 years to the day that emmitt till was murdered and all the way in 2020 we see far too many acts like that continuing. Given what happened to ahmad arbery, to jacob blake, what happened to protesters in kenosha, what happened to Breonna Taylor. We see today across the country a symphony of black voices from the grassroots to the grass tops working to make all of us remember this is not a moment, that it is a movement, and we have to pray with our feet in order to make sure the movement moves forward. So im hopeful that in my conversation and in all of the talks that people hear today, across the country that they will remember their personal contributions to this movement, and ensure that they actually do everything they can you also talk about how it matters that black communities are using this moment to essentially recast themselves in light of what weve heard. I cover the white house for nbc, in light of what we heard from President Trump, Vice President pence, others at the convention. Absolutely. We heard four days of absolute propaganda and fear mongering. The Trump Administration is trying to cast a Peaceful Movement as violent. Given things we saw in kenosha, the murderous attack from Kyle Rittenhouse. This administration is choosing to call those of us that are activists as terrorists. It mischaracterizes an entire movement and entire community for the sake of political gain. Today matters for a lot of reasons. But it is important that americans hear once again from black activists, black families and black communities to remember this is not what trump and pence and the rnc have made it based in their fear and lies. The truth is we are here because of police violence. We are hear because of racial terror. The truth is that equity and justice shouldnt be partisan. They should be promised. I want to play something senator Kamala Harris told my colleague craig melvin in his exclusive interview with her. Listen to this. Last night we heart Vice President pence say people wouldnt be safe in joe bidens america. I will say this about the Republican Convention, some of which i have watched. I have yet to see these people who profess to be National Leaders speak about this issue of the killing of unarmed black men, brown men, indigenous men in our country. The name jacob blake was not said by President Trump or Vice President pence, george floyd, Breonna Taylor was not said. Why is it important for leaders to say their names . I think its important because leaders are supposed to be leaders for all of us and not just their base. We did hear from a lot of black voices during the rnc. We heard reference to a lot of black communities, but not in ways that truly reflect the root causes of the injustice. As ive said before, im happy to be a broken record about this, because we have to be wary of Political Parties and elected leaders who refuse to actually deal with the roots of an issue. What that indicates to us is that they have no intention of actually solving it with any permanence. The only intention they have is using it for political gain. So i am prayerful that days like today, the march on washington, the naacp virtual march, the be loved Community Talks that the king center will be having, the black National Convention that will be put on by the movement for black lives this evening, that all of those things will help americans recapture the power of this moment and this movement that is very simply making a demand for justice and that should never be too much to ask no matter who is president. Brittany, thank you so much for being on the show. We appreciate your perspective and voice as always. Well have a lot more coverage of the march here on msnbc. Be sure to stay with us. Time to get a look at what our sources are saying. This morning were getting a peek inside dealings between the secret service and Trump Organization properties. David its great to have you back. We looked at receipts from the secret service charged by the Trump Organization, we found at least 900,000 from taxpayer payments to the president s company. We wanted to know why. We learned a little more about that, things like when Vice President pence went to trumps hotel in las vegas, the secret service represented 151 rooms. Even though these were secret service agents, they were charged resort fees, 29 per room per night. President goes to maralago. We saw the secret Service Started renting rooms when trump wasnt there and wasnt expected to be there because trumps club wouldnt hold the rooms they wanted, they would rent them to other people. In or thor to get the rooms they wanted, they paid trumps club to rent the rooms for weeks at a time when trump wouldnt be there. It shows you the way that the Trump Organization treated their captive customer, us. When trump went to his hotel in turnberry, scotland in 2018, they had to move furniture. 1300 in furniture removal charges. Thats the kind of charge that they may be doing all the time. We only know about this one because we sued to get these records. In response to the story, david, a white house spokesperson told your paper they were, quote, building up a very large dossier on stories that you and other journalists have written about you and the administration. Talk about your reaction to that. Well, if they think we did something wrong, we got some facts wrong obviously we asked them all kinds of questions before we published the stories to make sure we get their perspective. If they think we got something wrong, tell us. Dont build up a whole dossier. Call us up and tell us. Anybody can. You dont have to be the president. Thats what theyre talking about, they dont need to build it up or put it in a leatherbound case. Call us and tell us what we got wrong and well correct it. So far they havent been able to identify anything, in all the coverage weve done about taxpayer payments to the Trump Organization that was actually incorrect. David fahrenthold with the Washington Post, thank you. That does it for this hour of msnbc live. Thank you for joining us.
