A time for healing. Hatred will never win out. Several other people were rushed to the hospital. What do we know about their condition this morning . Reporter thats right. Six people were rushed to the hospital after that shooting. Four of them are in the hospital behind me. They remain there. We spoke with the head of trauma surgery. He said one of the most complicated efforts will be this 70 somethingyearold man who had several gunshot wounds to his abdomen. That will be a very, very long recovery. Two of those are police officers. This whole community is now sitting sit i ing. We have seen an entire community. Listen to what he had to say. For a moment i felt like im sitting at the cemetery and this is a massive moseleum. You said you could never use that sanctuary again. It cant be used again in its present condition. The bullet holes are too numerous to count. We will rebuild because were tree of life. Weve been here 154 years. You can cut off some branches but the tree will continue to grow. We will be back. Reporter reporter this whole community is aching for some good news. Were hoping to bring you some soon. We are choosing to start with the focus on the victims. Who these people were. Their lives taken. We have more on the 11 People Killed saturday. Reporter anew details about the 11 lives stolen. They ranged in age from 54 to 97 years old. Among them 75yearold joyce fienberg. A retired researcher. Remembered as a power house intellect ch intellectual. Brothers cecil and david rosenthal. They looked out for each other. 55yearold daniel stein, remembered as a family man. He was a fun guy. He treasured every minute. Reporter overnight we spoke with two sisters of victim richard gottfried. Still numb. It hasnt really sunk in yet. Reporter his third sister carol was inside too. She survived. He is was the kindest, most loving, caring person. He always did for others. Emotional tributes from those folks. I want to bring in ron allen outside the federal courthouse. We know the suspect in the shooting is due to court today. This will be his First Court Appearance since police captured him over the weekend. Reporter thats correct. Good morning to you. Theres a bit of possible breaking news developing. One media outlet in pittsburgh roberting that Robert Bowers may have been released from alleghany hospital this morning. If thats the case, then we do expect him to show up in person at the courthouse for this first appearance which is scheduled right now at 1 30 p. M. Eastern time. If he does come in, obviously, there will be heavy security and believe he will come in through the north side. I just got word from my producer, its confirmed hes been released from the hospital. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the moments before he s surrendered. Scott brady has already started the process of seeking this case to be a capital murder case, the Death Penalty. That decision will fall with u. S. Attorney general jeff sessions. If that becomes a Death Penalty case, its a very long arduous time consuming process. The legal odyssey of the prosecution begins here today. Thank you. At the same time the pittsburgh shooting suspect is do to court. The person suspected of mailing out more than a dozen pipe bombs is due to make his First Court Appearance. Kerry sanders is joining us from miami. Kerry, were learning more about how officials were able to track down this mail bomb suspect, right . Reporter its very interesting because you know when you get an active review of the procedures that police use, you begin to understand the technology they have. We understand from the 14 package bombs that were intercepted that on one of them they were able to get a finger print. When they got the finger print off one of them, they started checking databases. Remember these packages all had return addresses in florida. Some of them were found at a sorting center in opaloka. They started looking at florida databases and they found a fingerprint match that led them to the suspect they have taken into custody. When they found the match then they said we have the name, lets see what we have on Motor Vehicle records. They found the license tag and the type of car, in this case, van. Theres a lot of white vans riding around and they did not know about the stickers plastered around it. They used a common piece of technology that i dont think most people know about, its called a license plate reader. They set them up stationary in some parts of the community. Other times its on the back of police cars. Its looking at license plates constantly. When it sees the one its looking for, it alerts via computer. We just saw the license tag and thats what happened here. They spotted the license tag in plantation. The fbi was alerted immediately. Swat teams moved in and they took them into custody. He has invoked his right to silence. Thats very important here. The suspect is not talking to federal authorities. The federal authorities are saying it is possible there could be more of these package bombs still in the mail stream and they just have not surfaced yet. Hallie. Thank you for that report. Were going to stay tuned on that situation. President trump has ordered flags to be flown at half staff to honor the victims of the pittsburgh shooting. You can see it flying at half staff above the white house. Governors around the country are doing the same at state buildings. That includes Ohio Governor john kasich who grew up outside of pittsburgh. Thank you for being with us. You are a native son of pittsburgh. Can you tell me about your reaction to what happened this weekend. Where you are this morning . Well, im in columbus. I received an email from one of my cousins saying this took place within ten miles. Thats not the deal. The deal for me is we lowered the flags to half mass here within just a few hours after the incident because its really an attack on all of us. Its an attack on the jewish faith. Its an attack on all faith. If theres anything we need in this country, we need a revival of people talking about love. I happen to believe that god is love. I happen to believe that we need a bigger and bigger dose. We all need to buckle up a little bit and raelealize we ar expected to be our brothers and sisters keeper. I happen to think that sometime at the end of our lives, we will be asked about what we did for those around us. For the least of those around us, for our enemies. Its easy to be paraded by friends. Its harding to accept its harder to think pos itively abot your enemies but we need to begin to do that. This just crazy. You talk about the importance of remembering this is a time for love and not hate and not anger. I want to ask you about the conversation thats been happening oiver the last 48 hous which is about the political rhetor rhetoric. The political culture we live in. Jay johnson was out this morning. He believes that there is an ownous on the president when it comes to this conversation. Here is what he had to say. Im not going to point the fingers at any one individual. I will say the president of the United States and in particular this president , has the largest bull horn. Part of the job of being president is to set the tone. Its not only just being the ceo of the executive branch of the u. S. Government. Its setting the tone, setting the mood in our nation. Governor, is he right . Sure. I have the biggest megaphone in ohio is the governor. I have a really important responsibility. Once we are going back and forth again and i was very, very strong about my feeling about how the president has conducted himself is part of the reason i didnt endorse him. As long as were going to go back and forth, this and that. I dont know its its like a civil war. What do you mean back and forth . Theyre saying we do both sides at that point. Hallie, Hillary Clinton said and i like hillary. Hillary said when they go low, we got to go lower. We heard that out of eric holder. Theres rhetoric and nasty stuff being said on all sides. I think the president has to be very careful and the people that go to these rallies. When he says i want to hold it back, can i. Theyre all screaming no. Thats not good. Here is what happens. Let me pause you there. I just do want the draw back. I dont want to skip over that piece because eric holder said he wasnt advocating anything illegal. When you talk about the president s language at different rallies like what we saw over the weekend when he was out. He said we cant change what we do and made those comments that you referenced. He is tweeting about this. Talking about the anger that news media. The Kelly Anne Conway was talking about the president s message. The president has called on people to unify. At the same time there are critics of the president who say its what he hasnt said that matters. Its what he hasnt said strongly enough. Where are you on that . Ive been the most out spoken republican in the republican party. I never endorsed him. Ive been very clear about it. When youre the president of the United States, you have a giant responsibility to bring healing and not charge people up. Ive said that. Now i have to say its on all of us. It doesnt matter who you are. Its on everybody to stop this. As we reach a fevered pitch, then what happens is people who are unstable, unbalanced or sick, can have a tendency to do crazy things. There are 11 people dead over in pittsburgh. I look at that and the bombs sent around the country. What i try to say is we all, all of us, republicans, democrats, we all have to take a deep breath. Nobody has been more critical of the language of the president than ive been. I also have to say that on the other side, everybody has got to calm down. Its not just one guy. I agree with you. The bigger megaphone is with him. We have to agree that we need to back this off. I had a campaign for reelection in 2014 and some of my people wanted me to ratchet up the red hot rhetoric. I wouldnt do it and i did extremely well. I was involved in a Government Shutdown back when bill clinton was president. We fought like crazy abut at th end we were able to reopen the government and get to a balanced budget. Were in a zero sum game today and saying i have to win and you have to lose. Win what and lose what . This is just crazy. We got to have some perspective. At the end i happen to believe and this is not a put down of humanist, i respect them as well. For those who are believer in a higher power, we have a responsibility towards our brothers and sisters and its not the savage them. We have to stop this. Let me ask you about that responsibility. Frankly it sounds like you have done some soul searching on this as it relates to whats happened over the last couple of weeks in the u. S. And before that. Pat tty davis. President reagans daughter saying lets stop asking donald trump for comfort after tragedies. Given that and thats her point there. We need to heal as a country and patty davis said maybe President Trump is not the person to do that. If thats the case, what is your message to americans about how we can how do we heal . You know, i said last week that the president is not a uniter. Hes not. He goes in these rallies and continues to do what he does. I think its absolutely wrong and nobody should apologize for it. Im suggesting that everybody has to be careful. What do you do . What is your message in. One at a time. Me. Its the way i conduct myself. The way when i get angry. You think i dont get angry at people. Ive got some reasonable gun control legislation in ohio and i cant get it through. Im mad as hell. If i start viciously attacking people it isnt getting anywhere. We all have emotions. I try to think about my kids. I try to think about the lord. I try to think about the way i want to be thought of long term. What kind of a guy was john kasich. Owe kn you know what we said about john mccain. He could brawl with the best of them but he always figured out a way to maintain a bridge. I stood on the stage and listened to the back and forth and people getting in the mud and its continued ever since. Its terrible. Im saying that both sides have to have some responsibility for this. Both side vs s have to say its going to start with me. If i were in another battle with him, i didnt insult him, i dont intend to. The minute i do that, i go down that path. We have to figure out what we can do. I think the success in Politics Today is being able to appeal to the higher moral ground. To the fact those people when 11 people die in a synagogue praying in the morning, a bit of all of us die. We all die when that happens. When people are in a caravan and marching and you have a mom with a couple of kids and their lives are at risk, we have to think about this. Just stop thinking about ourselves from a zero sum game. Im hopeful the people of this country have had about enough of this. Governor kasich, thank you for coming on the show. Well leave it there. God bless our country. President trump said hes headed to pittsburgh. We dont have word on the date or time on that. He is getting back on the trail for a big campaign blitz. Well talk about where hes going and where hes not going. That includes the big race down south. Were live in texas where beto o rourke is hoping to pull off an upset. Here is president reagan denouncing hate in a speech before the naacp in 1981. To those individual who is persist in such hateful behavior, if i were speaking to them instead of to you, i would say to them, you are the ones who are out of step with our society. You are the ones who willfully violate the dream thats america. This country because of what it stands for will not stand for your conduct. Over at the white house President Trump has a pretty quiet schedule. No Public Events planned. We have seen him this morning on twitter. All of that changes big time later in week. The president expects to kick off ten Campaign Rallies between this week and next tuesday. Kristen welker is over at the white house. The president laying low today. We expect to see him on the road much more in the coming days. Reporter we do. His tone is undoubtedly going to be a key focus once he hits the trail again. What we have seen is what you were talking about with john kasich is the case of mixed messaging from the president. In one instance strongly and firmly denouncing antisemitism. Calling for unity and quickly shifting into Campaign Modes. Taking aim at some of his political rivals. Just this morning taking fresh aim at the media. Let me read you the latest tweet. Theres great anger in our country caused by inrackaccurat reporting. That will do much to put out the flame of anger and outrage. We will then be able to bring all sides together in peace and harmony. Fake news must end. Using that controversial term enemy of the people despite the fact he has been getting criticism for not moderating his tone more. White house officials telling me the president will continue to call for unity at the same time were still just a few days out from the mid terms. You can expect him to be full Campaign Modes when he hits the trail. Nbc Kristen Welker there on the white house lawn. Thank you. One of the most closely watched races in the country is going down in texas where ted cruz leads beto orourke by Single Digits even though privately the Cruz Campaign seems optimistic. Lets go to garrett who is in amarillo, texas where o rourke is holding a rally in less than an hour. Reporter were starting to see folks show up for this rally. Set to start in the next hour or so here in amarillo. Ive been speaking with folks in and around the Cruz Campaign and they are confident in the state of affairs now. I talked to someone with knowledge of their internal polling last night who said they are up in the low double digits. Maybe 11, 12 points over beto o rourke. Thats a bigger margin which shows him trailing but by a more modest six or seven points. The task ahead for the Democrat Legislature trying to unseat ted cruz is still difficult. Its going to be an uphill fight. They are fighting. Were in the high plains of texas. Amarillo is one of the reddest spots on the very red spot of texas. Youre looking at counties where President Trump won with 60, 70, 80 of the vote. Beto has been up here six or seven times trying to drum up votes. Votes that have not typically come out in elections. Thats what well see with a heavy focus on the early vote. Thank you. Were going back to pittsburgh after the break. Looking at the rise of an antisemiti antisemitism. Well talk to one rabbi who said this could have been his synagogue. As we look at how other president s have responded to senseless acts of violence. Here is president obama after the shooting in charleston. Amazing grace how sweet the sound upbeat dance music upbeat dance music bell ringing whenshe was pregnant, ter failed, inlaws were coming, a little bit of water, it really it rocked our world. I had no idea the amount of damage that water could do. We called usaa. And they greeted me as they always do. Sergeant baker, how are you . They were on it. It was unbelievable. Having insurance is something everyone needs, but having usaa now thats a privilege. Were the bakers and were usaa members for life. Usaa. Get your insurance quote today. We have some news just in. It turns out that cnn has said another suspicious package has been delivered to it s atlanta facility. It was intercepted at an atlanta post office. Theres no imminent danger to the cnn center. Its not clear if this is lirnkd o to the other packages. Pete williams reports the fbi has not seen this yet and cannot comment. Well keep you posted on what else we here on that. Were keeping an eye on the shooting suspect in saturdays horrific attack. We have learned he has been released from the hospital and is expected to appear in court in just a few hours from now. Its all happening as members of the Community Focus on their neighbors. My text, my emails, my facebook over flow with love from strangers, people ive never met. All with the same message. We are here for you. My cup over flows with love. Thats how you defeat hate. Joining me now is rabbi aaron who leads the reform synagogue in the same neighborhood as tree of life. Youre a mile or so down the road, right . Reporter thats right. Very near. Tell me what youre doing, what youre hearing today and what your community is doing here and your members to help folks over at tree of life. Reporter were all just making our way through this surreal experience. This random act of violence that is super charged because of the rhetoric in our culture and society here in our doorstep. As we make our way through the grief and as we begin to make sense of what it means to have lost so many precious people, all of whom are so close to us, people are grappling with ways to help. You are shocked this happened but you werent necessarily surprised. Why . Reporter we realize now that could happen anywhere at any time. Were all as vulnerable as anyone else, anywhere on the globe. We just become almost enure derks to it. We know were all on the firing line these days. You talk about President Trumps comment about the lack of security, you said they were tone deaf. What prompted that reaction . Reporter that notion we would all be safer if there were more guns around us. If every one of our places of worship and all of our children schools had armed guards or armed teachers. Rather than dealing with the cause of this hate and this turn to violence, were to arm more of us. That would be the solution. Simply misunderstands the responsibility each of us has and the president to lead us in the direction of peaceful coexistence and a world that reflects our highest values rather than super charged sense of defensiveness. The president said he wants to visit the pittsburgh area. This morning savannah asking the tree of life whether he would welcome that. I want to play you what he had to say. The president may come and visit. Would you like to visit with limb. It would be my honor to always meet a president of the United States. Thats rabbi meyers but others where you are have said no. They dont want the president to come until he denounces White Nationalism more forcefully. Where are you . Do you want the president to visit or not . Reporter i appreciate very much the public statements, the official pronouncements that have come out of white house and from this president. I also know he really has become a symbol of division in the country because the way he says the right thing and winks and nods and at his rallies. Stirs people up and plays to our worst passions and instincts. Ill leave that to him and the leadership, the Political Leadership of our community how that should be handled. I know at this time, in these immediate days, we bury or dead and come to terms with our loss, the president s presence in pittsburgh right now may not make every one as comfortable as he would like to imagine. Rabbi, thank you so much. Were sending our thoughts and prayers to do you. I appreciate you joining us today. We want to shift gears to developing story where overnight a plane carrying 181 passengers and eight crew members crashed into the sea right after take off. Relatives and friends of the passengers gathered at the airport. They were praying, hugging each other and waiting for official. Not expecting to find any survivors. At this point the cause of the crash is not known. For democrats, path to victory in the midterms come down to one word. Suburbs. Party trying to make end roads outside of big cities. Their enthusiasm is sky high as were a week plus out from the midterms. Democrats are hoping that will take them over the edge in districts all over the country. Take a look at one key race in florida. Thats Andrew Gillum. Hes there with Kamala Harris who is appearing in florida to campaign for him. Steve kornacki is focusing on one district for 18 races to watch in 2018. Talking about the importance for democrats of the latino vote getting high energy. Getting high support for democrats. Taking the district thats the home of a republican icon. The rojnald reagan district. This is a republican held district that democrats are trying hard to flip. We talk about the democrats and their path to a house majority, the 25th very much a part of that. Its one of those districts. We talk about this a lot. Mitt romney won it in 2012. The republican. It flipped to Hillary Clinton in 2016. Theres a rising latino population. Democrats hope to get very high turn out from latino voters in this district. They think that could be key to knocking off knight. New poll shows knight still in a district clinton won. Hes 34 from latino voters. For democrats, that could be a key number to watch. This district very important as they try to flip those Hillary Clinton districts. Thats important for democrats. Also quickly we update you as well on the bigger National Picture here on the senate side. Basically this. This is our Senate Battleground right now. Its going to set up a potential piece of news from nbc this week. Three races we have been talking about. North dakota looking like its starting to fall away. They are two away from the majority. Texas democrats have been trying their best. Every poll we see continues to show beto orourke lagging there. This is one where democrats had high hopes over the summer. They have shown blackburn taking a lead there. If tennessee goes to the republican side, those three, get republicans at 50, democrats could run the table in the rest of this battleground and the republicans would still have the senate majority. The democrats will need some good news out of tennessee probably when you look at where north dakota and texas have been heading lately. Thank you very much. Tennessee, donald trump won by a ton. Marsha blackburn looks to be in a dead heat. Lets go to nbc katie beck at an early polling place in tennessee. What are you seeing . Reporter as steve mentioned, this race is extremely tight. Some polls have these two candidates within a single point of each other with just a week left in this race. Both candidates are household names here in tennessee. Marsha blackburn, a congresswom congresswoman. In the deep red state of tennessee with a lot of support for President Trump, if democrat phil brettison wants to win, hes got to convince some republicans hes the right one for the job. Reporter a surge of voters early in nashville, tennessee. You cast your vote for phil brettison. The governor vying for votes. He will have to pick up votes. Voters like business owners. How much thought and time did you give this decision . Is it something youve been wrestling with . Ive been wrestling with it since the fall of 2016. How many days can you get up and say wow, wow. Did that really just happen . Do you still consider yourself a republican . No. Reporter and not a democrat either. He says in the mid term election hell be voting on character and track record. Hes a former mayor of nashville. If it werent for his reputation and business, he wouldnt have done as well as he have so far. Reporter he says many of his friends face the same struggle with polarized politics. Were on the phone and social media saying how do you reconcile these things. Reporter hes counting on votes from folks like clinton for a shot to beat the republican and win the senate seat. If that happens ill be the next governor. Reporter a tight race that should shift power in washington. Lots of enthusiasm here on the ground in tennessee for the upcoming mid term elections. Early voting totals have surpassed what the midterms were in 2014. They have until thursday to cast an early ballot. After that they will have to line up on election day. Thank you. Joining me now, the former governor of virginia, a former dnc chair and somebody who has chaired past president ial ca campaigns. Y youve been out a bunch campaigning for democrats. One of the places you visited is florida. Democrats have an 85 chance of winning control of the house. In florida politico has a snapshot showing voters under age 30 have cast 5 of the ballot so far. How do you do it . How do you make sure you dont repeat 2016 where democrats thought they had a good shot and didnt come through in the end. I feel about about gillum. I was out campaigning with him. 92 million americans didnt vote in 2016. They woke up the next morning and said how did this happen. What you saw in virginia last year, we were the first real test after the 2016 president ial election and in virginia, as you know, we picked up 15 house delegate seats which was the most since 1880. Not 1980, 1880. I think those individuals who didnt vote said i will never miss a vote again. Youve seen huge turn outs. Youve seen huge early votes. Were going to win the house. I feel good about the gov govern governorshi governorships. Andrew gillum is a young dynamic candidate. Were looking live now at a Campaign Event for Andrew Gillum there in florida. The latest polling out this morning shows that he only had a 1 lead. A one point lead here. You got to be a little concerned about that, no . We havent had the governorship in 20 years. Look at the battles where we have competitive races going in florida but were up one or two points in kansas today. Were going to win in iowa. Were going to win the michigan governorship, illinois, maine, nevada, new mexico, ohio. Look at georgia dead even. Well have the first africanamerican woman elected when georgia elects stacy as the governor down there. Theres a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. They dont like trump. They dont like the antics. The divisive fear. Hes running a campaign on fear and division. He cannot run on policies. They dont like what hes done on health care. His tax cut is not helping individuals. All he can run on is division and fear. Governor, clearly you are feeling very optimistic. I want to quickly ask you about Hillary Clinton. In an interview she did over the weekend with recode. I think we have time to play it. Ill want to get your reaction. Do you want to run again . No. It was pause. Id like to be president. Im going to im not going to think about it until we get through this november 6th election. Her answer is no. He spokesman said her answer about her supporting role in 2020. What do you make of that response . I think its hard for hillary. She got three million more votes than donald trump did but i feel confident in saying i think hillary is never going is done elected office. Shes going to help candidates. I feel confident saying shes not going to run for president. Former governor, thank you very much for your time. One site yanked from the internet. Its known among the users as a less restrictive version and more popular chat plat forms. They used it to post anti semitic comments and conspiracy theories. On saturday the shooter allegedly posted this message before the shooting. Screw your optics, im going in. Gab has been pulled off the internet effectively. A message reads in part we are the most censored and threat to the media. Gab is not going anywhere. Joining me now is ben collins and harelry lipman. Tree of life was his synagogue as a child. Welcome. Thank you. Harry, let me start with you first. You know tree of life. And i understand that you knew one of the victims of this shooting. Can you tell me a little bit about joyce . Your memories of her, what she was like . She was a lovely woman. She was at synagogue because she was saying the prayer for the dead for her husband, steven. Two years after he had died, you only say it for 30 days, but she wanted to keep going, and felt like she couldnt stop nature thats why she wound up dying. Lovely, kind, considerate, warm. You know, its terrible to think of that her last moments she was really a fine person. You hadnt known what happened to her until fairly recently, obviously, when the names were released and when you found out from friends and family . It was a terrible saturday. I knew people back there in Law Enforcement enough to know that the scene had to be frozen. You couldnt move anybody because its a crime scene for about 12 hours.
