Because from Lindsey Graham to rand paul to ted cruz, you have these former trump foes who are now conveniently trump trefrien. And i think it speaks to how completely donald trump has taken over the republican party. He hits houston tonight and then four other state this is coming week. He goes to wisconsin on wednesday, he will campaign for republican Governor Scott walker. And then he goes to charlotte, North Carolina on friday and rounds things now the murfeesboro on saturday. As the president hits the trail, he is doing it with an applooro rating that is the best job. Among registered voters, he stands at 47 approve, up three points from a month ago. So comparatively good numbers for a president a couple weeks out for the midterm, but republican operatives tell me this is a good news story for the president up to a point. Because if Republican Voters see the president on somewhat of sure political standing, they would be less inclined to go on a rescue mission, driving out to the polls in big numbers on election day. And so that is why the president is trying to instill this energized panic among his base, talking about these cultural you issues like immigration, he has tweeted about this caravan of my grants s oig. And he said remember the midterms. So he is ginning up the emotional intensity that is key to pushing people out to the polls. And we have a departure later on this afternoon. What is your bet, do you think the president will stop and talk with us . Reporter if recent history is any indication, i think that we can say that he will stop and talk. But well see. Thank you. Why is the president saying so many things that are not true . What do you mean, which ones . Well, lets play one on the tax cuts. Go ahead. Were looking at a major tax cut for middle income people. What is your time frame . I would say sometime around the first of november, maybe a little before that. But stuf beinghe is talking caravan making claims not founded there. He is talking about even low hanging fruit, the opoids bill. Hardly any democrats supported that. All the democrats in the democrats supported it and most of the members of the house did. So why hasnt he told the truth . Lets go to the tax bill for a secretary. He has been working with chairman brady for a period of weeks now and the Treasury Department to look at tax cuts 2. 0, the framework has been outlined, that bill wont pass life the election because the house is not going to come back into session for it, but that is not to say that they havent started the framework on that. So whether the republicans hold or dont hold the house, there will be an opportunity following the midterm elections to vote on potentially a second portion of that tax cut. So that is fair. But thats not what the president said. He said by november 1st he will have that thing going. And that is just one example that the president said that are not backed up by the facts. Why is he doing that, does he think voters dont care or dont know . No, this president has answered more time with the media than probably any other president in modern history. So he has the opportunity to give out his message and he is trying to talk about the success that hes had early on and i dont think that he gets enough credit for the tax cuts that have been historic and unleashed the economy to where they are today. And weve now seen because of those tax cuts more people working in America Today than ever have been working in our nations history. Part of that is because he is not tweeting about the tax cuts, is he is tweeting about the caravan of mexicans and again the unfounded claims. So if it is up to the media to correct things, why is it such a missed Information Campaign from him . I think if you look at this caravan coming in, now 7,000 people, were told this is just completely a grass roots effort and people are taking their lunch pails and walking what is the equivalent of 2,000 miles from where they are going to the u. S. Border. It doesnt happen that way. You can go black to Ronald Reagan who said if were a country who does not control their borders, were not a country at all. So the president is securing our borders. And what he said was we have it make sure these people dont illegally cross into the u. S. And he is talking about using the but that is different from what the president is saying. These people are escaping poverty, violence. We have a series of Fact Checkers that have said there is no evidence to support the claims that the president is making about for example middle easterners. So let me go back one more time, he keeps saying that arent true. Why . As it relate to the this caravan, i dont think we know he who is in there. We know there are dissidents from venezuela. That has been proven. People probably paying somebody to join piethese. But there is no evidence for that. I dont want to get into a back and forth because im asking a broader question that i havent heard a answer for from you. Anthony scaramucci says that he lives in a reality of distortion. So why cant the president just tell the truth . He tells the truth all the time, but part of what happens in the media is they either but the Washington Post has said that he has said the most incorrect things. Thousands of them about. What is the level of the check . Is it that there are more people cork work today, africanamerican unemployment lowest it has ever been . That is a pivot. I understand, but look, you can criticize the president all you want, but look at where the economy is and give him some of the credit he deserves for what has been done. And i think that is fair. And i think what his gripe is the media tends to focus on some of the things that he says that may be not factually complete, but they dont give him the credit for all of the great things that have been done in the first 21 months of the administration. A that is a fair criticism. And let me point out that we did start the show by talking about the president s approval rating. I do think that it is responsibility to call out the president when is he wrong quh over the weekend has been a lot. Let me ask you about the midterms. Politico has a report says that according to two people, the president is distancing himself from a potential republican thumping on election day. He is telling confidants that he didnt see the midterms as a referendum on himself. And according to one person, the president has pointed the finger at paul ryan and Mitch Mcconnell and said if they screw it up, it is not my fault. So how can he have it both ways . I read that story. There are two unnamed sources. And lets go back to what the president is said on the campaign trail. The president literally said no, i dont bear any responsibility. The president also said that his policies are on the ballot this november. He knows that. He is out campaigning tenaciously. He knows that the plid temidter elections are a reflex on what the republicans stand for. I believe that you will see senators increasing their republican majorities in 15 days. And i think the house will shrink their majorities. But there is a very clear path right now where the republicans maintain that majority, it will be smaller, dont get me wrong, but there is a path because the president is on the campaign trail and he has the opportunity to keep the republicans in the majority. Something that historic precedence says cant take place. Youre saying if the president if republicans do lose the house majority, despite what he said publicly, will take some ownership of that . I think the administration has to do that, but it is also against historical precedent. Barack obama lost 63 seats. Bush gained seats but that was largely because of the 9 11 tragedy and the country was very much united. But then brett kavanauill clint 2. So i think the republicans will lose seat, but will the wave be greater than the 23 or is it going to be smaller. And if you look at district by district right now in the place where donald trump is turning voters out there, is a true path forward for the republicans to hold that majority sglip want. I like the mooch a lot, but the president listens to what people tell him and he repeats those facts. So if they are giving him the wrong information that is the responsibility of the staff. And i know you wanted to jump in here. Sure. The president s big challenge is to sell a product that isnt himself. He is very good at turning people out. Some of whom are infrequent voters. But when he wasnt on the ballot, he made the same argument that President Trump is making now, my policies are on the ballot, come support the democrats. It doesnt work. With regard to immigration, two things can be true. President trump has ever right to use his authorities under the through clamp down on illegal immigration, but he doesnt need say things that arent true. There is no link between undocumented immigrants and crime. First generation immigrants here legally commit crimes at lower rates. Is so i dont think that he needs to stretch the facts in order to make the fact for clamping down. My sense is that the president wants to stoke what you could call the culture are wars because at Geoff Bennett noted and everybody here knows, people vote when they are mad and scared. That is the game of the midterms, to turn ultimate your base, to try to get them energized in a way that the president has learned is an effective way of doing that. Hit those hotbutton issues. So talk about the nfl, immigration. Talk about transgender. Exactly. Making that come up again because those are the issues that will motivate people if they are on the fence especially now if they believe the polls, that there is a chance that republicans will actually maintain the majorities. You need to give them incentive to turn out. And new polling shows people are really interested in it, not just republicans. Democrats as well. Particularly groups. Look at that, 68 of republicans have a high interest, 72 of democrats. And people who you dont often see, young people for example, there is more interest there. Youve also got the president heading to texas tonight to try to boost republican chances. And there is this foe turned friend piece to this as well. I covered ted cruzs campaign and i remember sitting with ted cruz when his dad was being accused of being part of the Jfk Assassination plot by donald trump. Heres what ted cruz has to say now about the president. Listen, 2016 was an election unlike any other. It was bare knuckle. And there were some hard shots on both sides. So is he your friend, your foe, how do you describe the relationship . He is the president. I work with the president on delivering on our promises. So that is now. This is then. Lying ted. Millions in fact voting early. Even though were still 15 days from the election. In georgia, there are new concerns that some of those votes are being suppressed. Election officials in one of the states most diverse counties are now being sued for rejecting hundreds of mailin an sten ssm. What do we need to know . First of all there, is a huge push to get out the vote in georgia particularly because there is razor thin election for georgia involving an africanamerican woman and if she win, she will be the first black female governor in the whole country. And there is a lot of concern among some people in georgia whether or not every single vote is going to be counted. Take a look. After casting ballots in elections since she was 18, she discovered she was no longer registered. You were in disbelief. Yeah. And definitely embarrassed. Reporter how did this happen . Georgia has an exact match law requiring voter information be identical to other state records. If a single letter, a hyphen, abbreviation or anything is out of place, the registration goes on a pending list. In marshas case, the a in appley was missing. And the exact match law seems to be discriminating by race. An Associated PressAnalysis Shows nearly 70 of voters with pending status are black in a state that is only 32 black. We are georgia. And let me play a bit, your organization had tweeted out this video, a bus trip last week to bring dozens of black Senior Citizens to vote early in jefferson county. You talked about how the county called to make sure everybody got off the bus. The county was saying this event was prohibited because it was a political activity even though you say the organizer was acting in her capacity as a private citizen. What ended up happening with these seniors . Did they vote or not . On that particular trip, they did not at the time. One, i just want to be clear that for the black voters matter, the event that we did this jeff are son count i did, it was nonpartisan, there was no candidate, there was no Party Affiliation. We do not have a Party Affiliation with the Democratic Party or any other party. So on that day as people got off the bus, what we did is as a followup on wednesday, it happened on monday, on wednesday we went back to the county and we stayed in communication with the organizer. So immediately what we pleel lized liz liz realized, some seniors and got in their cars and went to vote. One senior said that not only did i get in my car and go vote, but i picked up my friend and i took her to vote. And we also found out that there was a few of them, the next day the county provided a van and several of them went. And several family members. But there is something that i do want to raise from a phone call that i thought was kind of disturbing that i got this morning. This morning i got a phone call in i actually talked to one of our organizers and one of the women, i wont say her name, but there was a 90yearold woman who went with us who was so excited, she was like i turned 90 years old this year and she was having such a joyous time. I found out that since that time, and were going to we have team to see about it right now, that she has been having flashbacks that what happened to her on the bus has actually triggered her on things that happened in the county in the 60s where she has been crying. And i said how was she doing, they said she is not doing so well. Because she was traumatized. Im raising this because Voter Suppression isnt just about technical a technical blocking, people being able to vote. But it also has an amazing effect on people different individuals handle it differently. And this obviously wound up being a traumatic experience for this t90yearold woman. So we have to resist and fight back around this issue. You talk about how it is obviously for this woman and so many others, voting is emotional. And i think both parties would say that. But it is also technical. People have to actually have their ballots processed. And we have this reporting, this Washington Post analysis, that found that more than 900,000 eligible people could be disenfranchised next month over this exact match law. Were talking about like a hyphen or middle name or letter wrong or whatever. What is your organization doing to make sure that youll these registrations do end up processed before election day . This is just a clear this is clear Voter Suppression. Is this any different than how many jelly beans are in the jar . It is the same kind of energy, the same kind of on the spectrum of Voter Suppression. Our organization is partnering with several organization, one in particular the Lawyers Committee on civil rights who actually are our main partner on Voter Suppression. And voter protection. Were also partnering with the naacp defense fund. There is even an 800 number, 866ourvote that we are telling people when you go to polls, if you get there, you have any problems, do not leave. Stay at the polls and just call us. Call 866ourvote. And on sunday, big event as well . Yes. So on sunday, what we are doing is so that we are sending a message loud and clear, we will not be deterred, so the way that we are going to actually address Voter Suppression is that we are organizing. So this sunday coming up october the 28th, were doing a no Voter Suppression sunday in atlanta. And instead of one bus, we are moving fleets a fleet of buses all around the Metro Atlanta area. And in some of the Rural Counties where black voters organizations, churches, sorority, groups like our own are coming together to move people to the poll for early voting.
