Were going to play for you all the things that he said that are blowing up social media and news reports right now during this hour, including news he made on north korea, immigration, he talked about former president obama, about meeting putin, you name it. But first, here are some key statements made by the president about james comey, the igs report, and Paul Manaforts big day in court which, again, is under way right now. No, i think that james comey was unfair to the people of this country. I think what he did was a disgrace. I think he goes down as the worst fbi director in history by far, theres nobody close. And i think i did the country a tremendous favor by firing him. I think the report yesterday maybe more importantly than anything, it totally exonerates me. There was no exclusion there co was no obstruction. What youll see is youll see bias against me and millions and tens of millions of my trial lawyers that is really a disgrace. The real fbi, those guys love me and i love them. The problem with the Mueller Investigation is aerves got massive conflicts. You have a tremendous animosity. Now heres the good news. I did nothing wrong, there was no collusion, there was no obstruction. The ig report yesterday went a long way to show that. And i think that the Mueller Investigation has been totally discredited. Manafort has nothing to do with our campaign. But i feel so i tell you, i feel badly about it. They went back 12 years to get things that he did dwe12 years. Paul manafort worked for me for a very short period of time. Its only 10 00 and what a day its been already. We have a team here and in washington ready to go this morning. Lets start with Geoff Bennett who is at the white house for us. Extraordinary, unprecedented we never seen the president stroll on to the north lawn of a white house for and can do it for almost an hour, geoff. Reporter yes. What is going on. Reporter were running out of adjectives to describe ha happened here earlier this morning. But you herd heard the president say if you read the department of justice Inspector General report youll find no collusion, no obstruction. Thaent watt determination of that document, that wasnt even the focus of the report. But the president also disputed the findings of the report itself which said that while james comey did act with what it called extraordinary and i subordinate extraordinary and insubordinate manner he wasnt motivated by bias and the fbi in general wasnt motivated by political bias in the way it handled the investigation of Hillary Clintons use of a private email server. But the president says the endless result was wrong, total bias. He was also asked if james comey should be locked up. He said i wouldnt want to get involved in that but it seems like criminal acts, he seems like a criminal. The president also made news on north korea. He defended his decision to call off the military exercises with our south Korean Counterparts there in the region. He said he didnt like the idea of what he calls war games since day one. Course that was a decision that caught the pentagon and south korea off guard. He also said of north korea, he sid solved that problem, which it could be said is a curious statement to make that they still have Ballistic Missiles and theres no timeline of when they may part this w them. They havent commit dmoid anything. And on immigration, this crisis engolfing the white house of these family sprations at the border, the president toind blame democrats, what he calls a democrat law, even though its a Trump Administration policy of zero enforcement which is triggering those family separations did he boarder. Although if you heard sara sanders yesterday, theres been no change in poll spit were going town pack that as well. Geoff bennett, thank you on whats been a very busy morning. Lets go back to this huge story thats happening right now, its happening really just after the president came out of the white house, went out on to the north lawn. Because while he was speak, look at what happened. His former Campaign Manager on his way to federal court. Hes in court right now. Paul manafort making his way through all of that press. Hes got to answer charges on witness tampering and whats at stake is nothing less than his freedom. Ken dilanian is outside the direct court in washington and what everybody wants to know right now is whether Paul Manafort is going to jail today. Ken, tell us whats going on right now in court. Reporter well, thats the big question, chris, and thats swhaernl Robert Muellers office is urging judge amy bermman jackson do is immediately jail paul man an for the. Whats happening in the courthouse behind me is two things. One, the prosecution and defense are arguing about whether the judge should revoke Paul Manaforts bail because of these allegations of witness tampering which are alleged to have happened not 12 years ago as donald trump said, but just a few months ago. But secondly, muellers office has also indicted Paul Manafort on those charges, charged him with obstruction of justice. So hes being arraigned on that indictment. Now, legal observers tell me its possible that manafort will be sent to jail today but not likely. Its not something theyre expecting. Hes facing his first trial on the overall case against him july 25th in virginia, chris. All right. Pete, you have somebody whos out on bail but under or under house arrest, right . He is under indictment. What do we know about this witness tampering charge . What do they say he did . Well they say after a superseding indictment came out accusing man for the of falsely claiming there was no lobbying a group he set up in the u. S. , that he contacted a couple of those Group Members and they call that witness tampering. His lawyer says it wasnt witness tampering, that first of all Paul Manafort doesnt even know who the witnesses will be in the trial so how could he tamper with them . Secondly, they say he didnt ask them to say anything that isnt troupe. The government says he was reminding them of his version of events, which is that there was no lobby fwhing by this group ie u. S. And that was an attempt to plant an idea in their heads. I think if the judge requires him to be held in jail pending the trial in july, but i suppose its possible that if the judge wants to send a message she can put him in jail over the weekend, let his lawyers next week try to get him back out again and perhaps release him. So she has a number of options here, all the way from a stern talking to to ordering him incarcerated until the trial begins. Ken, i want to ask you if we have any idea howl this mig lon might happen and how quickly we would learn whether he loses his freedom today . Reporter petes right about what might transpire. These meetings tend to take an hour, two hours. The lawyers will argue. Theres also this arraignment on the separate indictment. Its possible she wont rule. Its also possible that he would be remanded to cust in which case he would be taken to a detention cell in the basement of this jail. And its possible hell get a stern talking to and continue under his bail arrangements pending that trial now set for july 25 new jersey virginia. We have this fifth screen morning. We have on one hand we just showed it, we saw Paul Manafort going into that courthouse at the same time the president is still out on the white house north lawn in that scrum of the pressi press there answering questions. But the statement he made about the igs report simply and clearly was it exonerates him. Does it . No. I think simply it doesnt. It doesnt say anything about the russian meddling investigation. Remember, this was an Inspector General report that the Inspector General of the Justice Department himself decided to start before the president was inaugurated to look into how the fbi handled the investigation of Hillary Clintons use of a private email server even though there were classified information on those emails. Thats what the report is about. It isnt about russian meddling. Maybe what the president means here is that there was a dodgy text message between an fbi agent who worked on both the email case and the russian meddling case and maybe hes saying because the ig suggests that that agent may have had political bias that that exonerates him. But the report doesnt really say anything about the russian investigation. Pete williams, ken dilanian, thanks to both of you. I want to bring in harrily theman, former u. S. Attorney and department u. S. Attorney under president clinton on set, caroline pa leasesy, as long as White House Reporter from the associated press. In washington, politics reporter to the daily beast and msnbc contributor betsy. But i want to start with you, harry, because you said on this network Paul Manafort should bring a toothbrush to court today. Do you still think that . Whats going on inside that courtroom that makes you believe he could be sent to jail . Yeah. I do think that. Whether the judge says ill give you a week to get your affairs in order is a separate question. But the case for his being replanned replanned to remanded to jail say lot stronger. Theres a law here that says if hes found to have tampered with witness, a presumption goes into play that he cannot, that he has to have his bail revoked. So first of all, notice the two arraignment and the the bail question dovetail. A jury has already found he did these things. What do they have to show that would make the judge say that this is, indeed, witness tampering that rises to the level that you dont get to wear your bracelet in your house anymore, youve got to go behind bars . Okay, first they have to show what happened by a probable cause standard which isnt very high and they have to show he was trying to sculpt testimony. He was giving these ham handed messages that go exactly to liability here. Hey, we were only lobbying in europe, right . Thats at the core of the case. So if she finds that happened, and i think she will, i dont see really how she cant since the jury has, then comes her area of discretion. Can she find against the presumption, against the presumption that operates that he should have a break . And his papers dont give any reason, i think, for special treatment. So, yeah, i hold to my prediction that hell have his bail revoked. Caroline, if your clients going to court today are you also telling him to bring a toothbrush or are you saying youll be home in time for lunch . Agree with harrys assessment here. Hes form to the presumption of being remand. Hes not only going to court today to decide whether or not to change the conditions on his bail, hes being arraigned on more charges, okay. The special counsel decided to supersede this indictment, his original underlying indictment to add these witness tampering charges, meaning that 23 members of a grand jury zhad thedecided there was probable cause. Thats what tips the balance in being remanded. I think in white collar cases judges tend to treat defendants a little more with kid gloves. I think hell have time to get his orders in affair, but this isnt the first time that the judge has taken manafort to task. Remember this guy konstantin, he was the one that super side ceded the indictment with him, he ghost wrote an oped previously and the judge took him to task with that. I dont think shell be happen happy with these new charges. We want to back up and talk about what weve saw this morning and yet weve seen it before with donald trump. Theres something thats going to be all over cable news and dominate the headlines that is implicitly negative for him. I think if you say your former Campaign Manager is going in for more indictments and maybe going to jail today, that sort of rises to that level. And he tweets, maybe im watching fox and friends, maybe ill just stroll out there and talk to them. He talks to them for half an hour. He talks to the White House Press corps for almost half an hour. Are you surprised . No. He is always drawn to spectacle. He loves the idea of throwing off headlines left and right and dominating a news cycle. And sometimes theres a deliberate attempt do that when theres another bad story out there. He likes to change the subject. We heard him talk about manafort and its interesting how his defense is its so inaccurate. What he could say to this point these are charges that predate the campaign. That theres nothing here from his chooim time while he worked for me. Instead he tries to belittle his role. Yes, it is true that manafort only worked for him for a few months, but he was the Campaign Chairman for those few months. He ran the Republican National convention in cleveland that summer. This is a significant role. Paul manafort was the most important in his campaign during a very crucial stretch. And also what we saw him talk about with the ig report there, this is another effort, the president and his legal team, Rudy Giuliani has done this too where they try to seize on something even if its not corrects, theres nothing in the report as we just discussed that exonerates him from russia, the russia claims, but it just allows him to mud d allows to muddy the waters and suggest that this is a political event, not a nonpartisan, above the fray investigation. I want to get back to Rudy Giuliani because its i part of this administration effort. But we have Kristen Welker who was in the middle of all of this today. Its. To see you my friend. Give us a sense of what that was like this morning, what the headlines were for you. I saw you in there, man, trying to get some questions in. It was wild. Reporter it was remarkable, chris. You and i covered the white house together and weve never seen anything like this. Not like this. Reporter a president walking on to the south lawn. Of course he did that interview with fox news first and then he came over and answered our questions for about 20 minutes. So i know youve been ticking through some of the top lines. Big picture, though, chris, this is a president whos just returning from singapore. He saw that trip as a victory. He wanted to defend why he thinks its a victory. We pressed him over and over on the fact that, look, north korea still has Nuclear Weapons despite the fact that he declared that the Nuclear Threat is now over. And he justified saying, look, we are working toward that. He said he thinks its going to happen soon. He was clearly feeling emboldened. I think that thats the headline here, the fact that he came out and not only answered fox newss questions but all of our questions. We did ask him about a range of other issues. I can jump in because i want you to get to that other stuff but would it be going maybe a bridge too far so say he was almost dismissive either of his concerns with manafort or his concerns about whether or not Michael Cohen might flip . Reporter absolutely. He was pressed on manafort. He sort of tossed it aside, indicated he wasnt concerned about it, asked if he thought Michael Cohen was going to flip. He immediately said i didnt do anything wrong. Effectively saying go ahead and let him flip, thats what Rudy Giulianis been saying, by the way, chris. He did seem in that regard emboldened ad emboldened as well. I pressed him on whether he did dictate that statement on air force one about donald trump jr. He said thats irrelevant. I tried a number of times, chris, to get an actual answer. Ultimately he didnt answer but he didnt deny it and i thought that was significant as well. We pressed him on the issue of immigration. This is a growing crisis for this white house, these images of families being separated at the border, children being ripped away from their parents. And frankly forced to live in Living Conditions that are not ideal. The president strikingly said that he hates those images and he called on democrats to do something about it. I said, mr. President , republicans control both chambers of congress. And then you heard him point to what . By one vote. Hes really getting into the details on that on defense. But my sense is that ultimately theres going to have to be some change that comes from him because you can feel the political pressure getting to him on that point. So just a remarkable day here at this white house. Kristen welker, again, pushing your way into that and getting your questions answered and we so appreciate that. I want to go back, betsy, so to this bigger idea of this Ongoing Administration push to discredit mueller, to take now the igs report and somehow make it about that and somehow it exonerates the president. And since both kristen brought it up and jonathan brought it up, let me play what Rudy Giuliani had to say this morning. Take a listen. The ig report basically tells you that both prongs of the Mueller Investigation are either corrupt or answered. Comey, those fbi acts who should be fired today and imprisoned next week. The next chapt earp is the corrupt Mueller Investigation, not mueller, but the reason for the investigation. Comey should go to jail for that. Actually investigate the investigators, the president didnt do anything wrong and hes being investigated corruptly. Now lets turn to investigate the corrupt investigators. Just to remind hes talking the fbi act who had that email exchange. What do you make of what we saw this morning . The president s loyalty is deeply concerned about the mueller probe. Theyre worried about the potential for dramatic political crisis if the president were to sit down with mueller and that interview were to go south. Thats why were seeing such a full frontal assault on mueller. The fact that Rudy Giuliani is suggesting that senior Law Enforcement officials should go to jail is taking this escalation to new heights. In fact, one really important part of the ig report that came out yesterday, the report from the Inspector General, found that two of the fbi officials who have become bait and large for the conservative movement actually pushed for the clinton email investigation to be more aggressive than tended up being. So despite the fact that page and struck exchanged these Text Messages that were clearly inappropriate that drew recommendation from high level people in the fbi, despite that fact, they were actually pushing to go harder against Hillary Clinton. So the idea that there was some sort of vast conspiracy to make things go easy on hillary and hard on trump just did not substantiate in the slightest by this report. So much to talk about. Harry, caroline, thank you both so much. Jonathan and betsy are going stick around with us in the is indeed unlike anything we have seen this morning at the white house, two interviews totaling almost an hour by the president. Some of what he said, democrats are separating children from their parents and how hes going to spend fathers day on the phone with north korea. Were breaking all of this down, things he said including, well, just take a moment to think about this. The president of the United States says he wants the American People to stand up and Pay Attention like they do for kim jongun in north korea. Back up first, we talk with trump whisperer and legal analyst alan der show wits. Thats coming up next. So, whats new . We just switched to geico and got more. More . Theyve been saving folks money for over 75 years. A company you can trust. Geico even helped us with homeowners insurance. More sounds great. Gotta love more. Right, honey . Yeah geico. Expect great savings and a whole lot more. With the right steps, hasnt left my side. 80 of recurrent ischemic strokes could be prevented. A bayer aspirin regimen is one step to help prevent another stroke. So, im doing all i can to stay in his life. Be sure to talk to your doctor before you begin an aspirin regimen. Not obstruction. The ig report yesterday went a long way to show that. And i think that the Mueller Investigation has been totally discredited. Thats the president this morning on the Mueller Investigation claiming that the ig report discredits the special counsels probe that, as the president s legal troubles continue to mount that aside from what weve been watching this hour, the president s former Campaign Chairman is facing jail time in a d. C. Court today. Attorney for Michael Cohen, the president , and the Trump Organization are hitting a hard deadline. Today the last day they can assert attorneyclient privilege over any of those really sensitive materials collected in the fbi raids of cohens hotel room and office. Well show you what the president had to say about cohen just last hour, plus also the lawsuit filed by the state attorney general here in new york claiming that the Trump Foundation engaged in, quote, persistently illegal conduct. The president forcefully pushing back against the claim saying on twitter well fight that suit. Heres how new yorks ag is responding. This is not either a sleazy or Political Action nor was it brought by mr. Schneiderman. This is a straightforward case of violation of the laws governing charitable foundations and nonprofit corporations in new york. Joining me now was his take on the whole range of legal issues, Alan Dershowitz and author of the case against impeaching trump. Its always good to see you. Let me start with what the president was talking about and clearly was focused a lot on this morning. He believes that the igs report discredited the special counsels probe, even though it has nothing to do with the russian probe and it exonerates him. What do you say . Well, first of all i am not a trump whisperer. Ive met the president three times in my life, always about the middle east. Im very critical of many of his policies. He listens to you. Lets clarify. He listens to you and he quotes you. Thats fine. I hope people listen to me, thats my goal to have people listen to me. I fundamentally disagree with my friend Rudy Giuliani whether he says that there ought to be criminal prosecution against people like comey. I want to decriminalize everything. I want to move away from weaponizing the criminal Justice System and using it in the political process. As far as the but does it make you uncomfortable that there are these ongoing conversation business major members of this administration . They want to put a lot of these people in jail. Yes. They want them out. They want them done. Its wrong. Its wrong. Its just and its also tactically wrong. When youre trying to argue on your own behalf that the special counsel shouldnt criminalize political differences with trump, you shouldnt be arguing that there should be criminalization of political differences with the democrats. I started my campaign against criminalization when the republicans were yelling locker up about Hillary Clinton. Everything i say about trump ive said about Hillary Clinton and would say about Hillary Clinton if she had elected president. As far as the ig report is concerned, theyre in balanced and for me it makes one important point. It shows that there was never a special counsel needed. All of this could have been done within the Justice Department. The ig has enorm husband what is it specifically that it thats argues against that . My point is the fact that you have an ig and you have very good career people in the Justice Department indicates to me that it was unnecessary ever to have a special counsel. All of this could have been done by the Southern District u. S. Attorneys office, by the district of Columbia District attorneys office. No need to spend 20 million. Is that what Robert Mueller is doing, putting targets on the back of people or is he conducting a straightforward, fair investigation . I dont think spet i think if he ends one nobody indicted, he would be a failure but there have been indictments. Thats my point. My point is, you have to indict if youre special counsel. If youre a regular u. S. Attorney and you investigate and dont see anything, then you dont indict. Many of the indictments, by the way, result not from crimes that occurred before the special counsel was appointed, but for crimes that occurred because the special counsel was appointed. Coverups, obstruction of justice. Does that make them any less criminal . It doesnt make them less criminal, it makes it clear, though, that the appointment of special counsel wasnt necessary to investigate the russia connection. That could have been done by u. S. Attorneys offices if the could have been done by career people. Its a great insult to the men and women who work every day hard in u. S. Attorneys offices. People have been there for 20 years saying they dont an objective investigation. The person who is should have been rekussed right abray this case was of, of course, Rod Rosenstein who was the main witness as to whether or not the president obstructed justice by firing comey. So i dont think the ig report in its merits, in its content has much to say about whether or not there is collusion. But i do think the fact that we have an ig report that is highly respected, highly recorded by both sides, neath are side is hap neither side is happy with the results, shows that we can do justice within the department of justice itself never needed a special counsel. You could argue both sides are happy they think they zbhot ammunition but thats two sides the same coin maybe. Let me ask you about about something you said in the past about peter, you said you thought he should be fired something we have heard repeated by members of the administration. Is there something that he did thats criminal . No, absolutely not at the should be fired. I dont think anybody has done anything criminal as far as i can tell in this whole 2016 election. It was a mess. And russia did try to interfere with our election, maybe the russian disease something crimin russians did something criminal. But the idea of weaponizing the criminal justice both sides tugs against each other, politicizes it, and it turns into a weapon that either side can use against the other. I want to have disarmament. I want to see both sides saying no more yelling lock her up, lock him up, no more make crimes out of things than arent kriemds. Let crimes. The recommendations of the ig are very good and we should be moving forward on those recommendations rather than screaming lock him up, lock her up on everybody whos on the Opposing Side of the political spectrum. Enough of that already. Let me ask you about whats happening right this minute and thats that Paul Manafort is in a federal courtroom. There are additional charges against him involving potential witness tampering. The question has been raids whether or not raised whether or not he should bring his toothbrush. Whats going on in there and what do you think should be going non there . He has never been convicted of anything. He is as innocent as you and i. And the idea of locking somebody up before a trial is so obnoxious to our constitution that every civil lib bertarian should be up in arms. They think that hes tampering with witnesses is they can subject him to home arrest, take away his computer. Hes already under home arrest. They can take away his telephone, they can have all kinds of restrictions. But the idea of putting somebody in jail before theyve been convicted is an act against Civil Liberties. But theyre for getting about the Civil Liberties. The aclu is not doing a thing to protect the Civil Liberties of americans. We have to remember the presumption of innocence. Manafort walks into court as innocent as any of us. The idea that he needs to be locked up because the government alleges hes done something without having to prove anything is really a very, very dangerous thing whether its done through republicans or democrats. As a civil libertarian im going to continue to speak up to Civil Liberties of people i disagree with, people i agree with and i wish the aclu were back in the game but now theyre supporting candidates running for office, theyre taking partisan views, they are dead in the water when it comes to protecting the Civil Liberties of americans. Thats why i and others like me have to be out there making the case to Civil Liberties on a nonpartisan basis. Alan, always a provoke vooktive conversation. We thank you for your time, sir. Nbc Legal Correspondent and host for the beat ari joins me now if the if you had to choose a sound bite from alan ber show wits, what do you have to make of what he just argued . I thought he was presernd about pretrial detention, the fact that Paul Manafort might be sent to jail was striking. There are literally hundreds of thousands of people those before men in black who are also afforded the presumption of innocence in theyrery but snit jail cells, many who are accused of far less crimes than manafort and no crimes of obstruction. And have nowhere with all. Theres all kinds of poor people, got picked up about a drug offense for example theyre sitting in jail. Paul manafort is not facing down anything that other people dont face its just were less across tommed to seeing rich elites treated this way. Mr. Der show wits is correct there have been been indictments for the conspiracy to influence the elections. And i think that undermines one of i had points, the special counsel will do whatever they need to do to find what they need to find. What weve seen thus far is probably the opposite. Bob mueller is moving carefully and if he doesnt have americans to indict on conspiracy, then he wont indict them and if he does then we have a system that will test whether theres evidence on that. The jurys out on that literal. I lets go back inside the courtroom where Paul Manafort is right now and tell me what youre going to be looking to hear from the judge. Whats the critical point you think that this is going to turn on one way or another . This judge is going to dig very deeply into whether Paul Manafort can be credibly accused or convicted of the tampering charge. This is separate from everything else. This is now all about what he was doing when he went to encrypted apps and basically said, hey, i didnt do any lobbying for these foreign groups inside the United States. That was all in europe. If youre a normal person listening you might say, sure, you could say that, you might be right or wrong. Whats so bad about that . The reason why when people got those messages these turned them over to the special counsel is they were worrying that he was telling them to lie. To lie, which is another way of saying telling them to commit a new crime. Proffer dershowitz said some of these crimes happened lately. Well, yeah, thats the whole problem. People keep committing crimes at least accords to the allegations of the prosecutor. What well see in that courtroom is is that the case, it was that bad. Or on the flip side, are manaforts lawyers right to say even though this looked sloppy, might have been poor judgment, that can he still speak his mind just like can he speak his defense. I think thats what were going to see. This is not going to be a mini trial of everything under the sun with manafort and money laundering. This is did he tamper away the means, he cannot be trusted to be out on bail before his trial . Always a great show at 6 00 p. M. Eastern time but this is the kind of day that the beat is made for. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Yu, agaou again can catch ar ppl eastern time. Up next, President Trump weighing in on immigration. This morning President Trump under increasing fire from both sides of the aisle about the immigration policy that is breaking up families. Having an impromptu interview at the white house this morn, trump blamed democrats for the zero tolerance policy of separating frarpts childr parents from childrentor entered the u. S. Illegally. I hate the children being separated from their parents. The democrats have to change their law. Thats their law. Thats the democrats laup. Law. We can change it tonight. We will change it right now. I will be here. Youre the president. Yew noou need to have votes. Mr. President , you control both chambers of Congress Excuse me, by one vote, we dont need . You need 60 votes. And the white house. Excuse me with the very a onevote edge, we need 60. We need ten votes. We cant get them from the democrats. Im joined now by congressman mark takano, democrat from california. I wanted to started by getting your reaction from what you suft heard from the president. You, the democrats, are to blame for this zero tolerance policy. Thats absurd. Its the president and the president s attorney general and their zero tolerance policy thats responsible for the separation of families at the border. This is nonsense that the president is spouting. Were going to hear from attorney general Jeff Sessions next hour. We he will be talking about immigration, but we know what he has use ford justification of this. Hes quoted the bible. I just want to play that for you. The apos he will poul ball and his clear and wise command in romans 13 to obey the laws of the government because god has or dantd the government for his purposes. Now, i know this spernl for you, he sent out a tweet and it said at the son of japanese americans who were interned during world war ii im appalled by the administrations horrifying actions towards people seek asylum. Innocent children should not be sprited from their parents. The law does not require this cruelty. He says like his boss, but its the democrats but he goes a step further and says this is biblical. What do you say . Well, i would dispute that interpretation of the bible. Let me draw the connection between what happens to my parents who were very little children at the time they were put in camps, 2 and 3 years old. They were part of a scapegoating of japanese immigrants and japanese americans. That very same scapegoating is occurring today with the word about immigrants that the administration puts out trying to make everything all seem like its one thing and villa phiing immigrants. And that ville fa occasion has led to this Inhumane Treatment of families who are presenting themselves as Asylum Seekers at the border. Lets go to the biblical aspect. I so respect the quakers and other religiousdy nom nations that want to treat japanese americans and immigrants fairly in the face of all that happened. And i cite other passages of the bible, passages good good samaritans, passages about street treating t treating the stranger as your neighbor. For the attorney general i think to twist scripture to suit his own purposes is immoral. So the whole thing is for the president coming down to you guys got do something. You heard him say that. And there are immigration bills working their way through the house, so i want to play what he said about an immigration bill that he could get on board with. I need a fwhal ghifs country tremendous border security. I have to have that. We have to get got to have a sfwhaul does that mean a wall . We dont have the wall, theres no bill. We have to have catch and release. We catch a criminal, a real criminal, a rough, tough criminal, we take his name and then we release him. And we say, please show up to court in a couple of months. You know what the chances of getting him to court are . Like zero. Okay. Its crazy. Majority leader Kevin Mccarthy backed him. He said no deal on daca without a wall just a short time ago. Is there going to be a deal if thats the parameter . Well, i dont believe that a wall is a solution to border security. And the comprehensive immigration bill that we could have passed back in my first term in congress there was a tremendous amount of resources devoted to securing the southern border. And i believe that even republicans in the heart of hearts dont believe that spending 25, 30 billion on a wall rather than building our roads and bridges in our country is a wise investment for america. We know that most of the immigration violations are occurring on people overstaying their visas. Its not a matter of people crossing the border and the wall is not going to improve our overstays. Councilman, i know you have votes to get to but we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us this morning. Have a good weekend. Thank you. Com hes the head of a country and i mean he is the strong head, dont let anyone think anything different. Right. He speaks and his people stood up at attention. I want my people do the same. So lets take a moment. Think about what the president just said talking about kim jongun saying hed like americans to stand up to attention like they do with the north korean dictator. Fresh comments after new reporting from Washington Post that cite source whos said the president almost derailed his own singapore summit because he wanted to start those talks a day early. Here to talk about her report, Washington Post White House Reporter and nabs political analyst started because apparently in singapore the president commented on a reporter on north Korean Television who he thought maybe should come to work at fox news, he joked. State television, staterun television praising kim jongun. Is that what he wants more of here . He does not seem to fully grasp or acknowledge this oppressive regime in north korea and how they squash any sort of political disend with executions and other means of government cra crackdown. This is not the first time weve heard him be drawn to an authoritarian figure. He talks highly about putin. Last year in the singapore he did not criticize the president there who is overseeing an extra dishl drug war, authorizing the killing of suspected dug dealers drug dealers on the streets. He says maybe its something we should incorporate here as well. Hes drawn to the strong figures and time and time again has chosen to forego what american president s usually do on the world stage which is talk about human rights and the idea that this should be changed. Yes, president s have to deal with unsavory foreign leaders sometimes, but while doing so, they usually shine a light on human rights abuses. Thats something he consistently does not do. And demands loyalty. Ashley, your new reporting, and i want to remind people that the president arrived when he arrived in singapore, because he left the g7 early. Right . He skipped part of this meeting after offending many of our allies. Im going to read from your reporting. After arriving in singapore on sunday, an antsy and bored donald trump demanded the meeting was pushed up to monday and had to be talked out of altering the longplanned and carefully negotiated summit date on the fly according to two people familiar with preparations for the event. Thats not even the stunning part. The stunning part, as i read it, was how they talked him out of it. Was it because, for example, there were security concerns . Well, they basically had to explain to the president , as you said, he got there and his attitude was sort of like im here, lets do it a day early. They had to explain a couple of things that convinced him to keep the summit when it was scheduled. One of them was that it isnt just about him and kim. There were all these other moving pieces and concerns from logistics to security to media that was still flying over. They also made the argument to him that he could use that down day to prepare a bit more. And according to the people we talked to, that is what he used some of that time for, and perhaps the most compelling agent, they didnt necessarily quite use the words ratings. They said if you move the summit up, youll get less wall to Wall Television coverage in the United States. That confluence of arguments made him ultimately stay on track. Our understanding is there were a couple of very tense moments where aides thought this entire summit was going to be derailed because the president was trying to move it all by 24 hours. Betsy, you have and actually ashley wrote about this as well in her article. You have the president really focussed on staterun television and how the north korean news anchor was really positive about kim. You have the statement the president made this morning that he essentially would like people to sit up and take notice when he talks, and now for me, this mind blowing thing that i guess like when youre ceo and youre in trump tower and you decide you want to move up a meeting, you can just move up a meeting. What do you make of this . Well, as jonathan says, it shows the extent to which the president has an affinity for many of the trappings. He likes the rigid hierarchy orderly way even though its repressive that some of these despotic regimes seem to engage in. The president cares overwhelmingly about his personal relationships with world leaders. If he feels he personally has a rapport and amicable back and forth with a leader of another country, thats the thing for him when it comes to American Foreign policy. Its not about human rights. Its not about multilateral agreements or alliances. Just the fact that he has some sort of amicable, friendly back and forth with a world leader, that can be definitive for the way he crafts American Foreign policy. Clearly at this summit, one of the biggest successes for kim jongun was developing that sort of rapport despite the language barrier with President Trump. Yeah, and his respect, i guess, what he calls his respect for north korea, going to the salute to a north korean general. He was asked about that this morning. I met a general. He saluted me. I saluted him back. I guess theyre using that as another sound bite. I im being respectful to the general. We have he said he was just being respectful. Right. We only saw this because the north korea media put it out. There are several other of him talking to others north koreans trying portray this as being so successful for him.
