Potential meddling from russia and potentially other foreign powers came out yesterday. It involve some simple measures as making sure you have a paper trail or using paper ballots to secure elections. They also said, maybe dont attach your Voting Machines to the internet, thats another simple step that you can take. Today, were going to hear from Election Security officials, state and local, Cyber Security officials and plus the secretary of the department of Homeland Security opinion what is being done. The clock is ticking toward the med terms elections coming up this fall. In the bruder context that was mark warner talking about Mark Zuckerberg. You can sense that there is building frustration among members of congress around how social media companies, facebook have handled all of this. An increasing inland for more regulation, and a sense that the examine has to me deaf. I can tell you that, one of the quickest waiting to fete under lawmakers skin is to act as though youre above what they are doing, or more powerful than they are. Congress hasnt been terribly functional but witness they do put their mind to it they can have some tea. Halle. You are reporting that facebook makers are talking to some committees. But were not talking about zuckerberg, for example. Rorp right. Were not at that point yet. That are just talking with staffers at this point. Thats probably because that are concern concerned leaks. Some of this is getting delayed because of the the noreaster that have descended here on the second day of spring here in washington. Theyre going to talk to a brud array the house and Senate Judiciary committees are kind of proudly tried to do some behind the scenes damage control. This is how facebook has operated, both with political reporters and here in washington. They have done everything through sort of an influence campaign behind the scenes. Clearly its getting to the point where the pressure on them is going to escalate and force them to chang their strategy. Halle. Case see hunt there. Keep us posted. Facebook facing fire. Mark warner wants to hear from Mark Zuckerberg. Some people will hear from zuckerberg. People here in california, facebook colleagues. Thats where we find gaudy schwartz who is there. Mark zuckerberg under real pressure, what have we learned of what he might do in some days or so . Reporter were hearing hes expected to speak in the next 24 hours. Possibly the competency are going through an identity crisis, this campus is in crisis mode. They are rattled as they see the rest of the world talking about facebook and what has when what fab has been doing with their information, what Third Party Apps have been doing with their information. There are a lot of questions that Mark Zuckerberg is going to have to face from lawmakers and investors. We understand there was a lawsuit filed yesterday against facebook because of this hit that Facebook Stock has taken over the last few days as the scandal has unravelled. Some of those questions are going to have to do with was Mark Zuckerberg warned about the potential that some of the information stored on facebook servers and shared with thirdparty apps could be taken and used in examines weaponized as weve seen from Cambridge Analytica and used in campaigns, so, some of those questions are going to come from outside. More than likely in the next 24 hours hes going to be talking internationally here to calm the nerve of some facebookers, hally. A lot of people has facebook, what does this actually mean . How does this impact what you and i and others actually do when we log on to the site . Let me pull up my facebook here, just bear with me. Im going to pull up facebook and im going to walk you through exactly what were talking about. Whether you open up facebook, heres your screen. And then youre going to go down here, so, this is my account. Okay im pulling mine up. These three little dashes down here. Sure. You get into your settings . Yeah. You go into settings. Here you go account settings. Check this out at the bomb of account settings youre going to find apps. Youre going to click on apps, here at the top you see logged with feign, airbnb, 31 others. Those are other apps im sharing my account with. Youre given permission to do that. Reporter right. So airbnb they see my name, friend li, likes, they see that i like the beat with re medical burr. Im not sure why. Nbc live with halle jackson. Whatever. Reporter that type of information can be used by those thirdparty apps and that is where that targeted advertisements come in and thats a lot of their bread and butter here. Halle. Thank you for coming on the shorts. Joining us now Robert Johnston head of the cyberer security firm. Ned price. And our panel for the hour, white house supporter sarah, and robert bloomberg. Robert to you first. When you look at what is happening with facebook youre seeing a backlash. What does Mark Zuckerberg need today and what is he going to do . Thank halle. I think what Mark Zuckerberg need to do is be open and transparent. Its no surprise that the russians used facebook as a social medium to reach millions of voters across the United States. I think there needs to be action and the action needs to be both technical and policy driven. So, one facebook needs a good policy on whether or not collecti collecting data or mining data in the way that Cambridge Analytica did is okay and two, they have to put in some measures for meddling. They have already put in some measures to prevent people from posting political ads that about supposed to on facebook so they can fete rid of the potential influence that is occurred during the 2016 elections. Its no surprise to me that people were able to mine data open my over the ircht collect this information. Its used in Intelligence Committee and intelligence products. Theres wealth of information beyond just wants or likes that you can collect from facebook that if used wrong or mt. Wrong hands can be dangerous. Check out the cover of Bloomberg Business week people basically purging their Facebook Accounts here. Is that worrisome of your facebook or do you think this is something that will pass . I think its something that will pass. What ive noticed about cyber breach is the marks are resilient. In home depot, target when they experiences these large breaches, sure their stock takes a temporary hit and loses some market value they all seem to bounce back. I have no doubt that the Facebook Stock decrease, because of this activity its begun to bounce back as typically you see with every breach. Theres a temporary hit or decline and after that market resill eyewitnessy comes back into play and it comes back up. Ned price does not agree with you. Well, halle im not so confident this too shall pass with Mark Zuckerberg. I agree he has a lot of options and theres one option that does not have is to do nothing. This is not a meming issue, a pr issue, this is an actual problem, a flaw with the facebook flplatform. I think the problem for facebook is they have treated this in a piecemeal way. We remember the fake news over the recent month, that i have addressed that pi flagging suspicious news stories. This is something about harvesting data from facebook and facebook cant treat this as separate issues. This is something they need to address if they are to gain the trust of their consumers. Robert johnston thank you. Im going to ask ned, sara and delieu to hang out for a second. A big head loan this morning coming from pennsylvania avenue. The phone call from Vladimir Putin and trump. The president calling Vladimir Putin after the election, the length we know as overly controlled and suspicious. President trump defied his aids on that. He was told before picking up the phone, do not congratulate Vladimir Putin. What did the president do . He congratulated Vladimir Putin. That is creating fire and furry over on capitol hill not just about the call by the leak. Krist Kristin Welker youre following this. What do we know . Reporter lets take that call first, halle. It is sparking criticism from democrats and renes as well who say that President Trump shouldnt have congratulated him, should have followed the direction of his National Security team but should have raised it had issue of election meddling as well as the fact that russia now being blamed for poisoning those spies in the u. K. This is what senator john mccann said. Senator mccain said an more than president does not lead the free world by congratulates dictators on winning sham elections. Halle, just moment ago senator mark roe rube has some sharp words. Take a listen. What i like even less somebody close to him leaking this stuff out. If they dont like the guy, quit. To continue to leak thing out its dangerous. I dont like what he did but i hate someone in his inner circle is willing to leak this stuff. If you dont like working for the president you should resign your job. Reporter we know theres a lot of frustration here about the fact this was leaked out as well. Sara sanders was asked about this yesterday and she said its not up to the u. S. To weigh in on the ways that other countries hold their elections. A lot of people are noting that just last year, this administration called for free and Fair Elections in venezuela. Now, the president s dchbder say look, former president obama back in 2011 congratulated Vladimir Putin when he won back then. But again, against the back drop of the russias meddling in the 2016 race, a lot of people, flats and renes felt he needed to be stronger on this point. It jrnd scores the die con my here within the trump administration, days ago you and i were commenting on the fact they imposed new zangs and credit tickes are saying the president is not confrontational enough. We wont here from the president or sara, because its a snow day. Unfortunately not for you. Ted, till and that lieu are still here. Six years ago was a very different time, this is apples and oranges. The controversy at the time was that Vladimir Putin had said unflattering thing about secretary of state hillary clinton. There were protests over there over that. What he did then compared to what he did in 2016, saying rude things about our secretary of state versus attacking our democracy and elections, potentially swaying our election, that is not the same of what he did before the previous length. Is there a difference between president obama back in 2011 con graduating Vladimir Putin than President Trump did today . It absolutely is. President trump is doing it in a different environment. President trump has not confronted him and yesterday he congratulated him. We also have to remember what has happened in ukraine. The russians have taken over crimea, theyve taken over eastern yukraine. And syria, the casualties that have wrapped up in that country, all of that is what President Trump made a congratulatory call to pew tine. John brow nan was fired up about that. To congratulate him and treat him so nicely while he treats americans can such disdain, i think it demonstrates he looks at the world through a prism of whats going to help and protect donald trump. Thats not what president s are supposed to do. I think the circumstances surrounding this call has undermined what the white house has been trying to do on russia. Theyve been trying to make the argue that theyre getting tougher like we just mentioned, sanctions. Theyve been talking tough about salisbury. In december they announced theyre fweng to start arming ukraine. To not pregnant up the poise bring up the poisoning of the exspy. The when his advisers said condemn him for this. Right. When the white house pledged to a statement with the allies. The fact that the president didnt bring that up at all just makes the whole thing look bad. That lew, it was stated a summit between President Trump and happen soon, when . They say the president is looking forward to meet being putin in the future. President putin has been per sue rngs increased arms in russia for several years and displayed that before his election. This is something the president and putin would talk about. But, its clear that the president has not yet listened to some of the republicans and democrats who say beware of what putin is up to. Well take care more about that arms race coming up in the show. Up next, i want to pregnant you up to speed op what is happening in texas, where the hundred for that serial bomber has ended. Police there are still on alert this morning. New info from our team on the person who had austin on edge for weeks. Come on dad higher higher parents arent perfect, but then they make us Kraft Mac Cheese and everythings good again. As a community were just relieved and thankful for this arounding of Law Enforcement that has been in our community here for the last week or so. That is the mayor of austin, texas this morning over on the todays show. Police say that suspect blue up his car over night while he was in it as the swat team closed in. We got this Surveillance Video in about an hour ago. Police think this is the bomber, this guy in the baseball cap there. Hes now been identified to two sources as 24yearold mark anthony conditt. Thats him in the green shirt. Round rock texas is where the police found this guy. Kerry, governor of abbott, texas out warning, hey there may still be bombing out there. They dont know what the person did over the last 24 hours before he blew himself up. Right. Reporter of course. Remember he most recently used Federal Express and two of the packages that he sent were intercepted. One exploded the others did not. Authorities were able to isolate that package. Because he used Federal Express and only dropped off two there, its addressed to authorities he may have used other Ships Services to sent bombs anywhere in the country. Theyre telling people across the country to remain vigilant, to look closely. If theres a package thats arrived and not one youd expect itll probably make the most sense and call 911 and talk to authorities about a suspicious package. Where im standing in round rock, a short distance from where i am is where this all came to an end. This is where the 24yearold bomber blew himself up after he was pursued by Police Driving his vehicle into a ditch. The authorities were able to isolate him based on those images. The images we see here from the Federal Express office. At least nine security cameras inside there picked him up, allowed the authorities to determine who he was and then track him down. A short distance from where i am, nine miles from here, we take you to fluger vil, fluger vil is where this suspect lived. The picture were looking at right now is the house where his parents live, a short distance from where he lived. The fbi has rooufred there. You can see there are also cameras that are there. The fbi going in to talk to the residents inside, we believe the parents. There have been other folks gone into the house. Neighbors say they are just shocked with this latest news. He seemed like a very normal kid which is what everybody says, or most neighbors say in these type of situations. But, you know, over the years theres nothing i can point to. Reporter and it so often happens. Neighbors scratching their head, not understanding how something they might have known or scene could have done this. The biggest question, halle is why. At this point we dont have an answer. Mark anthony condit may have left a note, an additional trail, thats something the authorities are trying to track down. We highlight, this may not be over there may be more bombs out there. Carriry sanders there in round rock, texas. Fbi Christopher Ray one on one with our pete williams. We want to share with you here an nbc news exclusive interview. Fbi director Christopher Ray saying hes satisfied politics did not play a part in the firing of Andrew Mccabe a day before his retirement. Pete williams sat down with director ray. Pete, walk us through some of the headlines with your conversation with him. On the questioning of the firing of Andrew Mccabe, listen very carefully. He talks about the process. He suggests he believes the process that was used in firing mccabe was a proper one. Heres his answer. Im committed to doing thing objectively and independently and by the book. I think that has to extend not just to our investigations, our intelligence analysis, but also have to expand to personal decisions. Some people commented on the fact it happened 26 hours before he was to retire. Yeah, i want to be careful what i can say about the process. My commitment to making sure that our process is followed, that it relies on objective input and it is not based on political and partisan influence is something im unyielding on. He also suggested in our interview that he was accurate the reports that came out earlier this year that he had threatened to resign when he was pressured to fire some competency,en conclude k mccabe. Youll see more of our interview tonight on nbc nightly news. He talked about a large number we have heard opening investigations into domestic terrorist. Well look forward to that. Pete, thank for being on. You will not want to misit, thats at 6 30 eastern. I want to bring back in sara and taloulle. You buy that . It was interesting that he said by the book. When you look back at what happened you get word that mccabe was going to be fired 26 hours before his upcoming retirement. Two hours late you get a tweet of the from the saying hes been fired. The president back seasons december calling for the sflshl of mccabe before his resignation. Theres interest in having hearings on this because even on the republican side of the aisle more people want to know what happened, why mccabe was fired and why it happened the way it did. One ore piece of this if youre been watching you can see ray telling pete he continentce doesnt feel pressure coming from the president. Thats different than fired james comey said. The president requested his loyalty, asked him to flynn inv. Right. We havent heard about chris ray and trump being alone in the room ever being in a situation where pressure can be applied. I think this does strengthen the argument of the credibility that this was done by the book. When politics was a factor in the discussion about mccabes removal, ray went to the mat to protect him. When the politics were removed thats when the trermination of mccabe went forward. So where does this leave the attorney general . Is he out of the dog house now that mccabe is out . On that he is necessarily out of the dog house. He did insert himself somewhat more into the situation by issuing this decoration to fire mccabe. This could have been done by other people within the justice department. But he made the decision, and obviously it was a decision the president didnt like. Sms something he can take to the president and say im doing things youre happy about and well see what happens from here. Sara. Yeah, i think you saw yesterday some public praise for sessions. And that is maybe a sign that trump is maybe moving to a more amicable place with sessions. Coming up next were talking about a story that may be flying under your radar but shouldnt be. This is a warning from a top if you believe about a new highspeed weapon now in the hand of russia and china. Were taking a look at why the pentagon is saying the u. S. Is vulnerable. Earlier this month when Vladimir Putin gave that state of address and one of the weapons is an intercontinental high pressu intercontinental High Pressure sonic missile. A weapon russia says it test launched no too long ago. The general said this when asked if the United States could defend itself against that kind of weapon. Listen. Both russia and klein are pursuing high personic. If that happens what kind of defense do we have . We dont have any defense that could deny such a weapon against us. Our result will be return force which will be the triad and the Nuclear Capabilities we have. That comes as Vladimir Putin says this. I suspect well be meeting in the not too distant future to discuss the arms race that is getting out of control. Well never allow anybody to have anything everything close to what we have. Nbcs courtney is here with what all this means. Lets repeat what the john said there. He said we dont have any defense that could deny an imemployment of a weapon such as this. Break that down for us. Hes absolutely right. The u. S. System is geared toward a threat from north korea. Would the u. S. Have a defense toward weapons that china and russia have is a deterrent. When you heard the general talking about the triad, thats the nuclear triad. That mean it is u. S. Had the ability to launch a Nuclear Attack weapon by air or sea. By air by bombers, b1 and 2. And by land we hear about the minute man that would be a ground base Intercontinental Missile with a nuclear warhead. The general may not be known to our viewers but hes one of the commanders. Strike that come has a mission that is vital to the United Statess National Defense and that is the overall nuclear deterrent. The u. S. Has about 1500 Nuclear Weapons deployed around the world right now but theyre used in a deterrent way. The hope is if an advair like russia or china were interested in attacking the United States, theyd say, well they have Nuclear Weapons, they could unleash the most powerful weapon known to mankind on us and the hope is that will deter them from using it. What the general meant there when he said one of these hyperson ik weapons the u. S. Doesnt have a defense against them, thats true. One of these miss it goes up into space, but then once it up and breaks through the atmosphere it turns back around and comes back down and flies for like a cruise missile. It flies lower and very fast. The u. S. Missile Defense System is not built to defend against that. Kans court thank you very much. Joining us now is joe. Your reaction for what you heard from courtney . This is a new type of weapon, a new part of the arms race, there is an arms race going on. These are weapons that fly five times the speed of sound so mock a or higher. China tested a couple and the general is testifying in favor of increased budge for u. S. Sonic weapons. If this is how come more people havent heard about this . The technologys new. Its untested, unproven. None of these weapons are deployed yet. When you fly five times the speed of sound youre conquering some tremendous air testing. Its not clear these weapons are going to work, most of them are still in the working stage. The general was right, china is ahead of us. China, russia, i have beanyb that we should be concerned having this . There is nobody else in this race right now, which is now the reason why we should limit this. The general, who i think courtney correctly noted isnt a name that rolls off the tongue for those that may be watching, also testified to what he believes what should be added. And i want to play for you what he had to say. I agree with the need for a nuclear web. That capability is a deturn rent rep to respond to the threat that russia in particular is portraying. A low yield nuclear weapon. Your concern about that, whats your reaction . This is another part of the new arms race, this is the race to get more use bl Nuclear Weapons. This system is the most c controversial. Senator jack weed, the ranking minority on the committee raised his concerns that that could lead to an increased risk of war, thats why hes against it. As we talk about nukes we have to think about north korea. There is some news out of seoul korea, sarah, the president says if theres this would be another Big Development here . Absolutely, it will take a lot of the pressure off of President Trump, i think to make some sort of dlibl between the u. S. And south korea. Already, theres a lot of talk about this meeting not happening. Right. So, maybe bringing south korea in could increase the likelihood to inkris this. To luis i want to get to you but theres some things i want to get to. You have to stick around were talking about new developments out of texas. Well bring it to you and explain how police found this suspect. You have to watch. Were also going to talk about more legal trouble for President Trump as yet another woman fight to tell her story about an alleged fair. Theres nothing more important than your health. Bringing folks out, we have seen it in community after community. We are back now with breaking news out of texas. Nbc news now reporting exclusive deals about what led police to the person behind a series of bombing in that state. I want to bring in Gabe Gutierrez whose in round rock, texas. What was the clue that led them to him, we now have an answer courting to our sources. What do we know . Reporter what appears to be good ole Fashion Police work, hundreds of agents have been working on this case. Nbc can report according to tom winter and andy blaine stein that the bomb r used a foreign and exotic battery, each explosives. One Law Enforcement official put it, these werent your store bought did you ever cells. The batteries were ordered online, according to one official they came from asia and it was this signature trait that allowed authorities to be able to connect all of these blasts. As you remember, halle there were five explosions, and the sixth bomb was intercepted before it was detonated. Another key piece that allowed officials to tie all this together, Surveillance Video that the suspect was seen at that fed exfacility dropping off packages. The fbi also was able to come up with a list of phone numbers of individuals that were in the same areas of the bombs. Because they were able to track cell founds, they use cell site analysis that can find callers in certain areas. Two Officials Say before the confrontation over night, the suspect turned on his cell phone, and that is another key piece of information on how they were able to track him here to round rock, texas. As you foe halle, he drove away from the hotel, police gave chase and that is when the the suspect detonated that device. Halle back to you. Gabe gutierrez breaking down that new information for us. Thank you very much for that. Back here in washington were following a different head lean, this one related to President Trump and women who have come affairs, alleged sexual misconduct. You know Stormy Daniels started this and she started to make this rain on the president because he started a deluge. Another woman is threatening to speak publicly about another relationship with donald trump. She signed a nondisclosure agreement with the National Inquirer before the 2016 election. She said this came out after Stormy Daniels took a lie detector case about her alleged affair. In case three, a new york judge is ruling a defamation suit against trump filed by a former apprentice contestant can continue. Peter alexander is here with all the developments. And peter, theres a lot. Reporter thats right. You have the former porn star, the former apprentice star and the form er lady who says this dated back to before he took office. But they return the spotlight to the allegations about Donald Trumps personal conduct. This morning another woman, another alleged affair with donald trump and another lawsuit. The latest accuser to come forward, former playboy model Karen Mcdougal. Karen mcdougal had a sexual relationship with donald trump for ten months. It was a romantic relationship. They were together very often. Reporter the alleged affair was more than ten years ago. Mcdougal says in 2016 she was paid 150,000 by the National Inquirers Parent Company to keep her secret. Now shes suing American Media inc whose boss is a friend of donald trump. Mcdougal the second woman this month taking legal action to tell her story following Stormy Daniels. Do you have a nondisclosure agreement . Do i . This is a photo of her taking a Lie Detector Test in 2011. The polygraphed report obtained by nbc news found the examiner to find daniels to be truthful to say she had unprotected sex with donald trump. The white house repeatedly called the claims false. Overnight daniels tweeted, technically i didnt sleep with the potus 12 years ago. There was no sleeping. Adding, im not going anywhere. On tuesday a new york judge rule in favor of former apprentice con test isnt a siri ramos denying the request for immunity because hes commander in chief. She alleged donald trump groped her in 2007. As a candidate, mr. Trump denied her claims and other women accusing him of misconduct. As for these women, Karen Mcdougal plans to speak out later this week. In an interview, Stormy Daniels could air that later this weekend. Thank you, friend. Im joining by nbc legal analyst danny savalos. Danny, lets start with you. There are three lawsuits that we can talk about, but i want to talk about two of them. Karen mcdougals story is obtained through catch and kill. Explain what that means. Karen mcdougals agreement is where she agrees to give over her rights to her story, just like you might license a song or some other performance to ami. And they can do with it what they want. And its alleged to be a practice by ami to purchase these stories and thereby silence potential critics of donald trump, as is alleged in the complaint from the mouth of the head of ami himself. When you talk about the defamation case, the judge let that suit continue writing that no one is above the law. Thats what you said. What does this mean for President Trump . And specifically, what does it mean for the potential to have to be deposed, for example . Huge implications. This is an extension of clinton v. Jones saying the president could be hauled into federal court. Now the president will be hauled into state court and the supremacy clause doesnt prevent that. Ive said this before, if donald trump gets into a deposition, whether state or federal, it could be the end of his presidency. The rules of discovery in new York State Court are broad, just as they are in almost every other jurisdiction. And a deposition could bring him down. Tulu, fast and final thoughts to you . The silence from the white house is the biggest thing standing out to me. We have not seen the president tweet about this. The white house is not answering questions.
