Should you care . Our team is breaking this down into what we know and what we still dont know. Speaking of russia, donald trump is blaming then president obama in a twitter tirade to not doing more to stop russias sberns. Were going to ask a staffer in the Obama Administration. Russia still at it flaming the flames on social media after a school shooting. Trying to turn up the heat on lawmakers, today in florida end. Well tell you what theyre up to in a couple of minutes. We want to start with that breaking news. The new charges in russia against a guy named alex. I want to bring in ken. So were going to talk about what we do know and what we dont know. We do know this persons name, not a name anyone has heard before. Who is he . He is listed on his link page in all of this relates to the work of Paul Manafort and rick gates who is working on behalf of a politician and they asked this law firm to prepare this report. The Justice Department was asking questions about this law firm and now we have the documents today charging this man of making false statements to Robert Muellers office. Ken, stay right there. One of things that we dont know here is any kind of white house reaction. For that i want to bring in nbcs Christian Welker whose on the white house lawn to talk to this. Kristin, a lot of parttipeople not know who he is paul man in order was basically the chair at one point. So, i assume no reaction so far from the west we think . No reaction so far from the weve wing. Weve reached out to members officials here halle. But youre right Paul Manafort, rick gate, who worked on the transition as well. As they become the focus of the special counsel, obviously that continues to royal this administration, get under the president s skin. We havent heard really from anyone from the administration with the expectation of the president since those 13 documents were handed down on friday. We are going to hear from Sarah Sanders in a briefing. Obviously President Trump in that tweet storm over the weekend reacting to the 13 indictments and the reality that this probe continues, and its clear its frustrating him. Hes lashing out against everyone except russia, except vladimir putin. I think thats where a lot of the focus is going to be today. What next steps is this administration prepared to take if any to deal with what was announced last week, which is russia meddled in the election. We know that behind the scenes, the president s legal Team Continues to talk to the special counsel about a potential interview with the president himself as this gets closer to the oval office. Halle. Thats right. Chris im going to ask you to stay there, i want to come back to you in a second. I want to first bring in msnbc legal analyst danny. Annette, and our panel for the next 56 minutes. Alexia and kimberly atkins. Im glad you all are here. Theres plenty to talk about here. Danny, ill start with you. This is an information as it says on these charges documents, not an indictment which means we expect to see alex van der swann pleading guilty to this. This is a plea deal, no . Exactly. Whether you see this information on a plea agreement or plea, thats usually a prelude to an operating witness. Thats probably what were going to see happening here. The information lays out only the bare bones. We already know hes a target by the government. More intriguing is person a. You can tell the government has almost worded this in a way to leave us wondering with cryptic references to family. He may have talked about family to impersonate or the family which could refer to the trump family. Its hard to read. Danny, pause that. I want to bring up the graph that we showed. Its the fourth bullet appoint, he allegedly lie you had back talks with person a, that is what van der swann is pleading guilty to today. Net price, these are the key thing we dont know, who is person a and why might that be relevant . Thats the big question in this charging brief here. What this document shows, halle, is that bob mueller again has been two steps ahead. Person aim is named in this information because an email of 2016 between this defendant and the person who was charged today and person a has not been turned over. That suggests bob mueller had this in his possession. How mueller has all of this in his possession he continues to surprise it. Ken, this is a little bit shades of george pap lus who was charged with making false statement to the fbi. In that team papadopoulos was linked to the campaign. Potentially is it fair to say spelling trouble for those guys, what do you think . More trouble, theyre in huge trouble. Yeah, absolutely this is related to the manafort gates of the case. There are so many names that continue to pop up that nobodys ever heard of in this case. Were only seeing the tip of the mueller iceberg. There are many people hes interviewing, we have no idea who they are. They are important witnesses and they meed to tell the truth. If they dont mueller has the ability to get emails, text messages, hes got all the Intelligence Community at his command. If hes overseas that opens up more avenue for u. S. Surveillance on communications. Explain ken, why should people be paying attention to this . Why is this important, why does it matter . Well, i think in particular in this case it puts a spotlight on the work that manafort and gates was doing. It also brings in an american law firm, asking and norths. That is a name people know. Absolutely. This is a report that some critics justify, a lot of critics that were not on the level now mueller is digging into that part of it. Halle. Aleaks ya, kimberly. As i said earlier mueller was moving quickly and thats what were seeing here. This is not going to take years much like the investigation of bill clinton. This shows the color and broad range of muellers indictment and whose going to be swept up in it. It shows how me tick lus hes being. We had the investigation with the 13 russian nationals last year. Very carefully going about this investigation and chosing who and when charges are dropped against certain individuals. An effort to exert pressure on the people we know, such like Paul Manafort. Danny, explain why bob muller cares about what aleck was doing in this report . Again we sort of reading mueller tea leaves. This involves a Prime Minister of ukraine and a report prepared by the law firm. The information doesnt give us more facts than that, it doesnt have to. It leaves us wondering, what was the report, why conceal it, why focus on an email and communications. The information lays out what was not true. Its confusing when you read this information because they describe what the untrue statement was. Its sort of reverse cyclisoyco. When you look at that untrue statement it means i passed it off, just talking about family. Waver those omissions were, they must have been pretty serious information to warrant a section 10 oo1 statement charge. Danny thank you. Kand lain ya thank you. I want to keep ned and our panel around here for a second. This is the second workday in a row were talking about news coming out of the counsels office. You now have this today, this guy charged with making false statements to the special counsel. President trump has been paying attention to this, we know this because its been on his twitter feed. He seems to have simmering or stewing over this investigation throughout the holiday and again this morning as he is back in washington pointing the ferng at president obama. Christian welker is become with us. New tweet this morning, donald trump apparentlys watching whats going on with the investigation. Reporter right. As you pointed out it followed that tweet storm in which he was pointing blame throughout the weekend. Remember when then candidate trump said that the election process was rigged. And former president obama said, hey, thats not possible. Everyone should just focus on getting on making their best cases and voting. Well, President Trump now using former president obamas words against him trying to cast him as a hypocrite. Take a look at this tweet earlier today, President Trump tweeting quoting from his predecessor, theres no serious person out there suggesting that you could rig an election. Theres no evidence that happened mt. Past. So id invite mr. Trump to stop whining and make his case to get votes. That was from president obama. Former president obama quoted, i just from the election thats because he thought crooked hilly was button to went. The russian excuse became the narrative. President trump trying to turn the democrat words on their head. Lets take a look back, at the time of all this because we havent heard the president s next steps in the wake of the 13 indictments. Back in 2017 that was when dhs and the National Intelligence said the russian government had directed a cyber attack against the u. S. Then on october 10th youll recall that candidate trump dismissed that as politically motivated. At the end of december, president elect trump praised Vladimir Putins for sanctions. President trump came out and said that putin was very smart for not retaliating. And a day later trump said the and of course, halle theres been a big back and forth every since then about owner the president thinks this is a hoax. Hes called it a hoax a number of times. Now hes trying to say, hey, i wasnt saying that, i was talking about democrats claims against me. President trump trying to muddle the message here. Bottom line hes president. No indication of what next steps he tend to take. That was something christine that you may learn more about today when youre sitting in that briefing room. Thank you kristin, well see you in a bit. Ned back with us along with the panel. Could you have done more to stop russia or take action against russia during 2016 . Halle let me just say this is a rich line of attack that comes from a president who spills secrets from the oval office. And a president who refuses to enact sanctions against moscow for its attack on our democracy. I think the point that have been missed that our greatest fear up until election day that the russians would manipulate votes. For a matter of weeks were focussed from deterring the rrps from doing that, from private warnings and other tactics and we were successful. President trump is making a big deal out of what we did publicly or as he said what we did not do. We warned americans not a statement from president obama himself it was are you teenly discussed from the podium at the white house. After the elections that were sanctions enacted. 35 russian spies were expelled. President obama issued a report the administration issued a report. We wanted to do more. We wanted to have a united show of force between the executive branch and the legislative branch. To say to the russians we know what youre doing and you cannot continue. Mitch mcconnell did not believe the russians r million dollared elections and would not go along with this plan. You laid out your argument here for why you think President Trump is wrong for making the argument. Is there any part of you that looks back and says, you know what i do wish we could have done more publicly before the election than what we did . The statement was released a full month before the election. He was reiterated time and time again from the white house, Homeland Security and national sbels. It was a difficult media environment. The same day the statement was released the access Hollywood Tape came out. As soon as the statement came out about 3 00 p. M. From 3 30 on everyone was focused on the access Hollywood Tape. So, just to be clear, either your happy with how the Obama Administration handled this . It was a complex scenario, very complicated acutely by then republican nominee trump who was claimed the length would be rigged. Are you blaming the media for not paying attention to it . I think there was a conflict in factors i think the Media Coverage of the tape detracted from some of coverage we expected. But the message was out there. Even some democrats say president obama should have done more. He should have been more public about this because the administration was worried. Is he wrong . Theres been no shortage of blame in finger pointing. Hind sight of course is as well as 20 20. On the other side of the equation you had President Trump claiming the Obama Administration was politicizing the election and it was be rigged. So you have no regrets about how it was handled . I have regrets on how russians were able to meddle in our election. Putting your shoes on the election in mid2016 there are no good options halle. Ned thank you for responding to that. When we come back well talk about another headline thats happening today. Three more funerals in parkland as that Community Remember the 17 lives lost in last weeks shooting. Well hear from teachers and three student who survived the attack. You cannot miss that emotional interview after the break. Oh, thats lovely. So graceful. The corkscrew spin, flawless. His signature move, the flying dutchman. Poetry in motion. And there it is, the baby bird. Breathtaking. A sumo wrestler figure skating . Surprising. Whats not surprising . How much money heather saved by switching to geico. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. So, right now in parkland, florida student are getting ready for a memorial of the lives of the 17 lives lost. Reporter just another tough some day for these kids, parents and teachers. Three more funerals for student today. The first one, carmen, 16yearold. And gina, shes only 14 years old and finally peter wang. After those funerals, 100 kids and parents are going to boar buses for tallahassee, its a 16. 5 ride. Tonight those stujs will sleep in the civic center and tomorrow walking over the state capitals to meet with legislatures to discuss gun control. All of this comes as teachers are preparing to go back into that school on friday. Over the weekend therell be an orientation for student and their parents if there are any issues they want to discuss as you can imagine. This is beginning to be very very tough for those student as they walk back into that school on tuesday for first time for a very small limited amount of classes. Halle. Tammy reporting if florida. Thank you. Part of this, right is politics. The biggest part of this is the people. The people being remembered today, the people that survived. We want to share with you a stuff to watch interview. To teachers and student telling their story for the first time. Id like you to listen. First you thought this was just a drill. I thought it might be a drill so i went to shut the blinds. And i turned and said turn the lights off. And the first time i turned i saw my student. He was bleeding. 14yearold Alex Schachter had been shot. My student they were so brave. I called 911 and i asked if i could get to my student that was injured. And i couldnt schachter and two more student, 14 yearly alena petty and 14yearold alisa was killed in their classroom. Its so hard. One building over. I was locked out of the classroom. 16yearold al wtrapped outside in a hall room with nowhere to hide. Then a teacher did what she wasnt trained to do. I broke prolt. I opened my door and looked out and heres a grown up of children and he said can we come in. I said everybody come in as fast as you can. At 65, shes a year away from retirement. I turned to the kids and i said i want you to know that if anybody comes through that door to harm you, they have to come through me. I will be the first defense, they will have to shoot me to get to you, and maybe that will give you a chance. It would be 9 ominutes before the swat teem finally came to their rescue. Whats going on in america . I dont know, but these children are going to change it. This young man and all his schoolmates are beginning to change it. Eventually we were healed. But now is the time to make a change and to do something. Thats jeff mccloud there, telling kerry it is time to do something. So, is congress listening . A new pole finds more than three out of four americans think congress is not doing enough. Lets talk about congress. Lets go to capitol hill with kacie. Kacie we have been here before. Seems to be a lot of skepticism that this time will be different and thats those student that you heard from. Thats right, halle. Do those voices that have been speaking forcefully on their behalf continue to bring through ring through the noise on what has been a series of attempts and failures by gun control advocates and others, victims of shootings like this to try to Push Congress to do something. One thing that gun right groups have been focused on throughout this process is making sure they Pay Attention on what has been going on in congress after an event like this has faded from the headlines. Student are focusing on trying to peak sure this doesnt happen. Planning that march a month out from when this took place. If you want to walk through whats happening with congress you can start perhaps with the newtown shootings. There was all this disillusionment throughout all of though. Such small student were killed and congress did nothing. I covered the march daytoday, walking into these offices with these senators and listening to these families tell their stories, that wasnt enough to get that. You can see on your screen that the bill that could have expanded the background search, that failed in congress. After the Las Vegas Shooting they decided they were going to let the ats try and deal with this problem instead of having congress do that. After that Sutherland Spring shooting there was a bill called the fix mix bill which enforces the current laws that we have around background checks. Doesnt expand them further by requires agencies that are not spending their information to the system to do so. That of course may have presented the shooting in Sutherland Springs because the shooting in that case had a record with the air force that was not logged in the database that was supposed to keep him from buying those guns. Before this most recent shooting in parkland ever happened it had a filly buster prove majority in the senate. Snaert mitch mcconnell, Chuck Schumer as well. There has been a universe where a group like the nra may be willing to say, especially in a wake of a tragedy like this, that those kind of restrictiones are fine and well and good but they have been pushed to the right like groups of gun owners of america and to draw harder leans in the sand here. Right now there is intense pressure to do this. The way this is set up in congress right now, it is possible, i think for it to pass. It has the kind of support it will need but its not clear how it will get through the house of representatives and heading into the Midterm Election that makes it that much harder. Halle. Thank you. There is a russia to stir up more chaos and division on social media platforms. Joe, talk us through these russia attempts to hijack the debate that kacie and i were talking about on guns. Right. There were hash tags that many were using to get real information about what was happening on the ground. You can see that chart there, the spike was about 1500 as of today, as we have reported over the last week. This is nothing new. This is standard behavior by russian bats or accounts suspected to be linked to the kremlin. What we see here is a continuous assault and thats how congress is putting it, by russia on america democracy. This has been happening with the release the memo hash tag. This happened also in the lead up to the 2016 president race. The anthem where the nfl players were kneeling in protest. We expect according to both congress fall sources and sources here in Silicon Valley that this will continue into the 2018 Midterm Elections. Thank you for that. Before we go to beak i want to quickly get reaction from kimberly and alexa. Nothing changed after the shooting. But is it about money. Does money make the difference here . I think money is a huge factor, its the strength of the nra. Its about how they campaign actively during the seasons. The change has to come from the change in the culture that forces congress to act. Im going to ask both of you to stick around. Were going to be coming back to talk about the new indictment, new information and charging documents this morning. A lawyer with links to russia now get ready to face a judge this afternoon. New charges against a special council against a guy named alex van der zwaan. Hes now been charged with lying to the special counsels team. We continue him in court later this afternoon. Pete williams joining us from washington. Gives your sense of significance of this. Reporter its very hard to say. We know this stems from the manafort gates case. About six years ago when manafort and gates were representing the Prime Minister of ukraine and the league work involved justification for charges that the Prime Minister brought against a political rival, the former Prime Minister. What the special counsel says that in november, lawyers from Robert Mueller interviewed alex van der zwaan and he gave them false answers about his conversations with rick gates, manaforts business partners. He was charged with lying. Normally, when youre indicted the document says indictment, this document says, information. And information is the technical term thats used in the federal system when someone intends to plead guilty. They dont file a criminal complaint or indictment they file an information. Thats a sign hes going to plead guilty. A second clue that hes going to plead guilty comes from the Court Document itself which says this is an arraignment and plea hearing. If wasnt going to announce guilty it wouldnt be called a plea guilty. What does it all mean, pretty hard to say. As you know theres been speculation that gates intends to plead guilty himself and perhaps this is a step along the way with that. More than anything it indicates that whenever someones involved in an investigation like this investigators running around asking people questions, they dont want people getting away with lying to them. That sort of hits them where they live. They feel very strongly about that. So any time along the way of their investigation somebody lies they feel they have to nail them and apparently thats what happens here. Pete williams, thank you. Coming up after the break were talking about a shackup in pennsylvania. This is really interesting. Well talk about why the court ended up drawing these new lines and what it means for both parties ahead of the midterms. Coming up. Stimate in 24 hours. If your uc or crohns treatment isnt working for you, ask your gastroenterologist about entyvio. Entyvio. Relief and remission within reach. So, lets take a beat and talk about whats happening out in pennsylvania today. The state has a brand new congressional map that some folks say could be a win for splats. The pennsylvania Supreme Court say the way the current map was drawn was not constitutional. State lawmakers would not come up with a new map everybody agreed on. So state Supreme Court issued its own redrawing of the congressional zrisks. Steve kornacki here to break it down. Take us through it. Yeah, taking a look through it, maybe it is a win for democrats. This is what that new congressional map in pennsylvanias going to look like. 18 different congressional districts. Theres a couple we can show you. First of all, take a look at what im circling. You got the First District and the sixth district here. These are both currently represented by republicans. Each of these districts as as they are newly configured by the Supreme Court rule both voted for Hillary Clinton over donald trump in 2016. They both got more democratic. Two republicans incumbents who are already in competitive districts before these happened. So right there those are go republicans you have to worry about. If you look at the seventh district here, if you look at the fifth, you have republicans, charley dent up here in the seventh. Pat lee in the fifth who are not running for reelection. The fifth has become a very democratic district. District seven this looks winnable for democrats. Right there youre looking at four prime opportunities for democrats. Another one if you go to the e werent part of the state. The democrats running in that special election in a few weeks, he now live in this newly created 17th district. If you look at the partisan distribution this becomes a winnable district for democrats especially in a climate like 2018. The democrat out there whose running in that special election, hes going to turn around and run in the new 17th district. Another opportunity there for democrats, as well. If you look at this, they and have five, maybe six seats the democrats could end up picking in pennsylvania in part as a result of this map. Steve hang on a second i want to bring in the panel. Hope republicans in the state of pushed the map all wait to Supreme Court if necessary. Dont let the demes take it away from you so they could raise taxes and raise money. What is he talking about. He doesnt know. I think its upset its now tipping in democrats favors. Since 2011, democrats fighting for the seats in the house only put the five of 18 states because of this old map. Now we can pick up as five or six and we only need 24 to win back the house. So thats scaring trump and others and it should. It should. The Supreme Court is considering part of jeremy manderring in two different states. This is a very key area because the law is so unclear as to just unfar how state legislatures can consider party lines when drawing these maps. You want these lawmakers to be able to do what they want but how much is too much . Its an interesting point. Steve kornacki i want to get your take on that. You have this now, is this going to be part of the future Court Stepping in to recreate these maps here . Well, this is the thing, weve had courts draw maps before, this one i think is different because its a state Supreme Court. It didnt go through a federal court. Whats interesting about this is what the state Supreme Court in pennsylvania seems to be saying is different than other courts. They seem to be considering the fact that that was basically a tossup state in the 2016 election, almost 50 50 between clinton and trump. Theyre basically saying when the judgments theyve made here that the map ought to reflect that. You can look at what republicans in the legislature there in pennsylvania did before and say that was a gerrymander. It does seem the state in Supreme Court in pennsylvania were thinking about, a lot of these in subtle ways, the New York Times wrote about this, the choices they had to make it kept going in the side of the democrats than the republicans. Kimberly youre nodding. Last word to you. Hes right about the state court in it being different. These are the factors that are going to play in as this battle continue to wage on across the country. This is only the beginning. Kimberly and alexa thank you for joining us. Steve thank you. Coming up after the break we want to talk about whats happening over in korea.
