Katy tur is in front of trump tour in manhattan. Peter alexander live in d. C. And kasie hunt on capitol hill. Peter, lets talk about the pick of john kelly. What do we know about it . John kelly, this is notable because this is the third general on Donald Trumps inner circle staff. The would be secretary of defense as well, general mattis. Kelly formerly served as head of the southern command. He has personal experience with the gold star father. His own son was killed in 2010 in afghanistan. With a position of Homeland Security he would oversee 250,000 employees, en foforce t security. This is a man donald trump feels strongly about and didnt invest particular focus saying he was with the democrats or republicans, just a person who served the country. Katy, we have seen comings and goings today. Talk us through any cabinet speculation you are heari inhea reporter we might find out more today, tomorrow. Donald trump said hell announce secretary of state next week. Well see if it gets leaked sooner. Youre right. Its a busy day at trump tower. The first person we saw today to have a meeting with the president was mayor rahm emanuel of chicago, the former white house chief of staff for president obama. He presented keeping kid who is want to stay and earn and urged them to keep sanctuary cities as well. We saw the North Carolina governor pat mccrory, governor for a little while longer as he just lost the battle for governor in North Carolina and conceded as of yesterday. He had a meeting here with donald trump. Well find out if it turns into any position within Donald Trumps administration going forward. Unclear right now. Also meeting donald trump today, scott pruitt, Oklahoma Attorney general. He could be considered to head up the epa. Hes been critical of the epa. He sued it on behalf of energy companies. We saw donald trump on the campaign trail bemoaning regulations and talking about how regulations from the epa hurt business in this country. And andrew pusnar, a billionaire fast food ceo. This is his second meeting with donald trump. He could be in consideration for labor. This is significant. Hes against overtime pay for fast food workers. Hes also been against raising the federal minimum wage. Donald trump himself has gone back and forth on that since he started campaigning. At one point saying he would be for a federal minimum wage hike and at other points saying it should be left to the states. As you said, a busy day. Puzder is interesting. So far what we are seeing with cabinet appointees is three generals and the rest of them, save nikki haley are either multimillionaires or billionaires and Andrew Puzder would be another billionaire on the list if hes picked for labor. Peter, katy has talked about the busy afternoon for the president elect. Part of that was naming Iowa GovernorTerry Branstad as ambassador to china saying hes an old friend. The two have an interesting and long relationship. Right . It dates back bek kdecades. For all the tough talk there was a relationship that appears conciliatory at least presented by this selection. The long serving governor of iowa dating back to 1983 with a decade hiatus. In 1985 wn president xi was a communist Party Official had come to iowa to learn about agriculture where the two built a friendship. They visited again in 2012. Governor branstad made four missions to china over the course of the last several years largely focused on agricultural assets in iowa, soy and pork going to china. They are one of the biggest consumers of the products as well. This is notable. Terry branstad in beijing within the last month. Kasie, i want to talk democrats. We heard word that Keith Ellison who is in the running for dnc chair says hell resign essentially making it a fulltime job. He was criticized by some for taking the position as we saw without it being a fulltime job. Whats the reaction you are hearing from democratic lawmakers there about this. I think there is a sense among democrats no matter how they feel about who they want as chairman of the dnc that it should be full time. Thats a lesson from Debbie Wasserman schultzs tenure. She eventually came under criticism. Some people would argue it helped that she had the position she did with fund raising and other things but at the end of the day her attention and priorities were divided because she had two things to worry about. Most democrats i talked to dont want it to happen this time. Its also evident that ellison has come under pressures in recent days. Hes had to talk a lot about comments he made in the past that have come under intense scrutiny from the Antidefamation League which has labeled them as antisemitic. So thats been something hes been trying to work on. The challenge also for democrats here trying to figure out how to make the race not be about refighting the Bernie SandersHillary Clinton primary. People have been focused on making sure thats not the se. Howard dean said on this show that it was something he was worried about over the course of the last couple of months. Ellison didppear with Bernie Sanders. He was the second person in congress to endorse sanders in the primary along with tulsi gabbird. Heres what was said today on government workers. Take a look. The most important thing we can do is be out there fighting because fighting back works. If they try to take away the executive order you thought for, we will be here and we will be there. If we have to sit in, well sit in. If we have to get arrested, well get arrested. Ellison clearly, of course, taking on the Bernie Sanders mold of progressive activism in that way. Thats why there is a lot of energy now on behalf of ellison. Still some twists and turns ahead for them at this point. We talked about the remarks that the president elect made this morning on the today show as we was named person of the year and made eyebrow raising comments about president obama, if thafact that hes still in th with the president after the meeting in the oval office. The White House Press secretary not revealing more about the conversation, not that its a surprise. Do we know anything else about how often the two are in touch or what they talk about . We dont know how often they are in touch. Remember, donald trump said he look forward to talking to him more after the initial meeting at the white house. Thats raised eyebrows because donald trump had been so critical of president obama and vice versa. Donald trump of course leading the birtherism charge against president obama for years and trying to drop it earlier on in the campaign in just one short press conference, as you remember. So they have been in touch since then. Donald trump saying this morning on the today show he feels the two men, he and the president have developed a rapport, they like each other and get along, speaking for himself obviously. Not necessarily speaking for the president. He did say and this raised eyebrows that he talked to president obama about his cabinet appointees, the potential cabinet appointees. He said he spoke with him and obama approved some of the people he was considering for positions. Matt lauer asked if he had chosen anybody that president obama had approved personally. He said he wouldnt get into it. But there are people on the list that president obama did speak highly of. This is important because when we were on the campaign trail and i know you saw this. There was a lot of vitriol for president obama among donald trump support rs. A lot of them trashing the president when they were describing why they were choosing donald trump. They wanted someone to go in there and change things because either president obama didnt change things enough, as promised or they felt he was taking the country in the wrong direction. It will be interesting to see how Donald Trumps supporters react to his newfound friendliness with the president whether it matters at all. As you know, we have talked to them on a number offish ys and when donald trump waffled on a key issue or hes changed his mind about something or developed a newfound relationship with somebody he was once critical of his supporters havent necessarily held him accountable for it. But this is one that could be pretty glaring for some of his more strident supporters who didnt believe president obama either should have been in office because they believed he was born in other countries or they believe he was, in some cases, some believed this and donald trump alluded to it, sympathizing with terrorists. Katy tur in front of trump tower. Peter alexander in washington. Kasie hunt in d. C. Thank you very much for joining us here. Now to continue the conversation to congressman adam shift, democrat from california, Ranking Member of the Intelligence Committee. Thanks for being with us. Good to be with you. We have a lot to talk about. You are fresh off a mini tweet storm about comments about russia he said this morning on the today show and to Time Magazine. I want to pull it up on screen. The president elect denying russian involvement in the email hacks saying i dont believe it. Quote, i dont believe they interfered. You are not buying that. Why not . I dont think anybodys buying it thats got the intelligence briefing and sadly, donald trump has gotten it. So he knows better. This is deeply concerning. It is one thing when he doesnt get regular briefings but another when he ignores what the Intelligence Communitys best assessments are. There is overwhelming evidence of the russian involvement in the hacks. By continuing to deny ithes essentially become a propaganda piece for the kremlin. They would love to sow doubt about their involvement in the campaign and the president elect is giving them the most phenomenal cover. I find it deeply disturbing. During the campaign and now after hes still willing to disregard the intelligence when it doesnt suit him, he will ignore it. He will choose his own facts. You simply cant have that in a commander in chief. There will be a time there is a National Security crisis and the American People need to believe him. This makes it difficult. You talk about the plain evidence which you describe as overwhelming evidence. Walk us through that. I cant go into the classified information. But when we are briefed by the intelligence agencies they give us their best assessment and they tell us what level of confidence they have in the intelligence. They tell us what the sources are, where it is corroborated. It comes from multiple sources. Here i think there is no question that the russians were involved in hacking our institutions. The secretary of Homeland Security, director of National Intelligence came out with an extraordinary Public Statement weeks ago attributing not only thats hacks to the russian government but saying they could not have taken place but for approval at the highest levels at the kremlin. Not something you hear top Officials Say unless they feel the intelligence is overwhelming. For the president elect to say this, you know, frankly its consistent with what he said earlier in the week which was he thought millions of Illegal Immigrants voted. It tells us the facts dont matter to the president elect. It is more important for him to say what he thinks he can sell to the American People or whats in his personal benefit. Those are not eququalities you t in a commander in chief. Is this a function in your opinion of the president elect not trusting the intelligence briefings, if this is the information hes receiving. Is this as one official told nbc willful essentially on his part . I think it is willful. This is someone who cant accept the fact that he lost the popular vote and therefore has to fabricate millions of Illegal Immigrants voting who cant accept the fact that the russians interfered and the hacks and disclosures may have helped his campaign. He cant accept that so hell deny it. Essentially anything thats critical of him or doesnt reflect well on him hell refuse to accept. This is frightening. This man isnt growing into the office. We have only a few week before he becomes president of the United States. The fact that hes willing to continue to peddle falsehoods or carry kremlin water is troubling. I know there is not much you can say about the classified evidence, but to people watching this who may be saying, well, we understand you get briefings and the evidence is classified. Is there anything if you were making a case to the American People about why they have to trust you on this, trust intelligence officials that there is a link between russia and the hacking . They dont have to trust me. If you ask my republican colleagues on the Intelligence Committee they have no doubt about russian involvement as well. Its quite undeniable. Dont take my word for it. The director of National Intelligence, the secretary of Homeland Security have spoken to this. I dont think the facts are in dispute. One of the things one of the reasons this is damaging is we have had problems with our intelligence in the past. Our intelligence on iraq was dead wrong in terms of the ongoing weapons program. I think there have been a lot of improvements in the Intelligence Community since. For the president to disregard this intelligence now will cast grave doubt on the publics willingns to accept when the Intelligence Community comes forward, makes public attribution and more importantly i think will have problems accepting what the president of the United States says if hes so willing to disregard the plain facts. Last question for you. I want to talk abo Keith Ellison, a colleague of yours who said he will step down and devote fulltime attention to being chair of the dnc if elected to the position. What are his chances . What are you hearing from your colleagues and where do you stand . This was the right decision. I think many members feel this ought to be a fulltime job, the focus of the leader of the party because there are divisions in the party that need to be healed and also because you want the singular focus. You dont want them worried about running for reelection back home or anything else. It was a wise decision by keith in terms of that i havent taken a position. I want to hear from the candidates. It will be a very big important job to help us claw our way out of this wilderness. So im keeping an open mind. California congressman adam schiff from capitol hill. Thank you very much. Thank you. Today we have a microsoft pulse question about Time Magazine naming donald trump as person of the year calling him the president of the divided states of america. In the last few minutes Opening Statements wrapped up in the trial of dylan roof. Hes charged with killing nine people at a Historic Black Church last year in south carolina. Mariana atenzio is live in charleston. Tell us what we know about the Opening Statements and about what happens next. Reporter it was a morning of powerful Opening Statements. Assistant u. S. Attorney Julius Richardson said it would be a long, difficult trial. Remember there are no cameras inside. I can relay the details we are learng about inside the courtroom. Richardson at one point described how dylan roof loaded 11 hollow point bullets in his gun at the church and loaded seven additional magazines. He explained how dylan roof stood over the bodies of the victims, stepped out of the church calmly, looked to both sides of the street, got into his car and, quote, slipped away into the night. You have to remember that according to authorities dylan roof confessed to the shootings and, in fact, we have learned that a twohour videotaped confession from dylan roof will be played for jurors. Once that happens it will be Public Record and we can report on it. There are two phases to the federal trial, if you will. The first is the guilty or innocence phase. Thats the phase thats under determination whether or not dylan roof did commit the crimes. Then the sentencing phase which is when it would be decided whether or not he gets the Death Penalty. Dylan roof has asked the judge to represent himself during this second phase of the process. It is his right to do so. If hes found guilty, does get the Death Penalty he will be the first person in america to get the Death Penalty in federal court for a hate crime. This is a very historic trial. Very emotional for folks inside as well as for the Charleston Community out here. I know you will keep us updated on developments. Now to oakland where the burned out warehouse has been cleared by officials. They have identified all but one of 36 People Killed in friday nights fire. But they are still trying to figure out what sparked it all in the first place. Steve patterson is live in okay lapband. Do we know do we know more . Reporter we know what investigators are focused on. There is an area in the bottom of the ware hour, the first floor where the colony, a network of various Housing Developments that are makeshift back to back to back stacked on top of each other and they are connected by faulty wiring and makeshift materials. They are looking at a section toward the back of the warehouse. There is a 45degree angle burn on the back wall. Thats the focus now. They have isolated the area and they are starting to bring in the atfs Electrical Engineering team. No confirmation on the possibility of a fire. Basically the investigations work with a process of elimination. They start looking at what could be and they get to what is. So in this area there is a refrigerator, a sound system that was loosely held together. They are looking at those as possible sources. They found the burn marks in that area. In response to this, the city is basically cracking down, trying to ramp up inspections by not only infusing a little bit more money in the city budget but increasing boots on the ground, getting more inspeorsble to go inside these warehouses. We have already heard of three additional inspections since this warehouse burned down. We spoke to the Congress Member who is in this area, the district of fruit vail named noell gallo. He wanted to alleviate the fears of people in this area. We are not trying to displace people. We acknowledge the housing needs. Developing news from pakistan. 48 people on board a Pakistan InternationalAirlines Flight headed to islamabad. You are looking at video of the crash site there. Its horrific. A spokesperson for the airline said all 48 are presumed dead. The plane went down in northern pakistan. Tom costello is joining us from washington, d. C. Do we know why the plane went down . Not a lot. This is an atr 42, a twin engine turbo prop plane common in areas they are trying to transport people from one small city to another or from a small city to the capital of islamabad in this case. The plane went down in good weather but there was a may day call from the cockpit, the pilot talking about the possibility of an engine problem. Also on the plane a pakistani pop star who has turned to an evangelical recently. We are told he was likely dead and killed on board. The military said so far they have recovered 40 bodies. It is likely everybody on board perished. The trouble is pakistan has a spotty record with aviation accidents. We count at least 13 passenger aircrafts involved in fatal crashes just in the last 20 years or so. Then if you talk about this airline in particular, Pakistan International airlines, six involving that particular carrier since 1979. So this is a smaller plane. This is not a jet. Its a turbo prop. What we would call in the states a puddle jumper. This plane involved in this terrible accident, one witness on the ground saying the plane was off course if it was headed for islamabad. What happened and why, we dont have the details of that now. Working on that. Tom costello, thank you very much. Coming up to politics. In germany, merkel is calling for a ban on muslims wearing burqas saying the full veil must be banned wherever legally possible. She opposed a ban before but hopes to be reelected and has come under fire about her open door policy for migrants. Now back to the president ial transition. Today on the today show donald trump said hes consulted with president obama on a number of cabinet picks. Listen. I have asked him what he would think of this one and that one. I asked what he thinks are the biggest problems of the country, what are some of the greatest assets going forward. We have a very good dialogue. Joining me now Washington Post opinion writer and msnbc reporter jonathan capehart. Good relationship with the president . Hes talking with him about potential cabinet picks. What do you make of that . Is that a good thing in your view . It is in that it shows the two men who, lets fate it, we know how they felt during the campaign. Not many nice words said about the other from the other. Now donald trump is in probably the worlds most exclusive club. Thats the club of people who occupy the oval office which hell do come january 20. What president obama is doing is a couple of things. One, hes respecting the peaceful transfer of power from one president to another. Hes trying to, i think, safe guard many of his legacy items or many of the things he was able to do as president. Many of them actually being executive orders primarily because the republicans in congress wouldnt work with the president on immigration. So the president had to do things by executive order. I think by being sort of a president ial mentor to president elect donald trump the president is, one, trying to show the incoming president the ropes and, two, trying to safe guard as much of what hes done as possible. To democrats here, jonathan, Keith Ellison is encouraging folks to protest donald trump today. Hes saying he will resign his seat if he is elected as head of the dnc. How do you see it changing the race for leadership within the Democratic Party. Do you . Thats a key thing. You know, the former chair of the Democratic Party congressman Debbie Wasserman schultz maintained her seat. A lot of people are within the party and believe the next incoming chair has to be someone who puts his or her on the party. I have had it on my plate for what i would like to see is someone who is full time who can give it his or her undivided attention. The other thing i think is to make sure people know the dnc chair chosen by members of the Democratic National. Can. Going forward saying he would resign is a good first step. Second is to make it clear hes reaching out to members of the Democratic National committee. Those Committee Members who do the voting that he reached out to them, talked to them and hes trying to get their support. Then i think the efforts a ris one. Jonhan capehart from washington. Thanks for being with us. Great to see you. We want to see what you are saying about the microsoft pulse question. Time magazine names donald trump person of the year calling him the president of the divid states of america. Can he bridge the divide . A whopping 92 of you say no. People across the country are remembering the 75th anniversary of pearl harbor. There is a live commemoration ceremony happening there. We are hearing from people, the highest levels of our nations leadership including president elect donald trump tweeting now we pause today to remember the 2,403 american heroes who gave their lives at pearl harbor 75 years ago. His running mate Vice President elect mike pence is at a ceremony happening in washington, d. C. We go now to hawaii, to pearl harbor where todays ceremony is honoring the memory of People Killed in the attack. Miguel, what are you seeing . Whats the energy like there . Good afternoon. It is a very special day here at pearl harbor for so many of the survivors and their families. Many of them got here early this morning. 4 00 or 5 00 a. M. They have been waiting patiently for this moment. Many of them remember it vividly. They were painting us a picture of the attack today. They say they can still see the skies here filled with japanese war planes. They can hear the explosions and see the smoke. They may be getting older and the numbers may be dwindling but the memories are not. They painted vivid pictures here. They said they were here not just to remember this day but also to remember and honor those who couldnt be here this day. You mentioned thousands that perished during the attack. They remember them as friends and loved ones. Many of them dont live in hawaii but travel from across the country to get here is because this is such a special day, such a monumental occasion for them. As we have hit the 75th anniversary and these men are getting older, many in their 90s, one 104. Er they are concerned they wont have the opportunity to make it back here again. This commemoration is special for them and their families. Miguel almaguer live from hawaii today. Thanks. His spokesman said president elect trump sold all his stocks in june eliminating conflicts of interest with u. S. Companies when donald trump takes office. What about conflicts with his own businesses . We have a look at that next. Generosity is its own form of power. You can handle being a mom for half an hour. Im in all the way. Is that understood . I dont know what shes up to, but its not good. Cant the world be my noodles and butter . Get your mind out of the gutter. Mornings are for coffee and contemplation. That was a really profound observation. You got a mean case of the detox blues. Dont start a war you know youre going to lose. Finally you can now find all of netflix in the same place as all your other entertainment. On xfinity x1. I dont think it is appropriate for me to be owning stocks when im making deals for this country. That maybe will affect one company positively and one negatively. I just felt it was a conflict. Thats president elect donald trump this morning about the surprise announcement we talked about on the show yesterday that he sold off all his stocks back in june. Next week the president elect will talk more about his Business Investments and how he plans to address them before he ends up taking office. You heard the president elect talk about conflict. To talk about conflict to discuss joe watkins former white house aide to george h. W. Bush and Julian Epstein from the house judiciary committee. Thank you for being here. Thank you. Lets play some of the remarks from donald trump here. The new bloomberg poll shows 69 of people they polled believe the president elect should not be forced to sell off his Business Empire essentially. 67 say he has to choose and being a businessman. Where do you fall on this . Whats your take . Well, you know, hes been successful in business as we all know. Hes made a multibillion dollar fortune in business, and this is the first time weve had a u. S. President elect who is somebody who hasnt held a political office, who isnt coming from government. So this is something different, and who has been so successful in business as this. Hes got to, i guess, figure out a way, and i know hes doing this right now, to figure out a way to not be in conflict, to not find conflicts. Selling the stocks is one thing, but he owns a significant number of companies, and they all, as i understand it, they fall under the umbrella of trump organization, llc. And he has to figure out a way to remove himself from the daily running of those businesses and immerse himself as i know hes going to do in the business of the country. So i expect him to get that done. So julian, House Speaker paul ryan talked about exactly what joe is saying here earlier today. Listen to what he said. How do you want him to address his business conflicts . However he wants to. I have every bit of confidence hes going to get himself right with his with moving from being the business guy that he is to the president hes going to become. So paul ryan is confident that donald trump will, as he says, get himself right with this. If he doesnt or if theres a question for democrats, do you think were going to see investigations . Yeah, with all respect to the speaker, thats a weasel response. Theres only one response in terms of getting rid of the conflicts, thats either to sell all of your interest in them or put nem inthem in a blind trust. The potential for massive corruption here, basically selling the American People down the river to advance your own business interests, is enormous. Take just a couple examples. Deutsche bank is under investigation by the Justice Department for fraud. They will probably have to pay a 14 billion fine. They are a major financial backer of Donald Trumps business interests. What do you think donald trump and the Justice Department appointees are going to do with Deutsche Bank . They have every interest in keeping Deutsche Bank healthy and keeping them funding the trump businesses. Do you think theyre going to do what the Obama Administration did and follow through on the 14 billion that Deutsche Bank owes the american taxpayers . No. They will probably go easy on them. Same with bank of china. Bank of china is a huge financial backer of donald trump. Theyve invested in multiple properties of trumps in downtown manhattan. Bank of china wants reled financial industry regulations. What do you think that Donald Trumps secretary of treasury will do and the white house will do . Will they go hard on bank of china and the financial regulations they want relief from or are they likely to give bank of china the relief from financial regulations they want . Same with when Donald Trumps daughter met with the president of japan. Donald trumps daughter is now trying to pursue an apparel deal in japan, and the major backer of that apparel deal is owned by the government of japan. Donald trump brings his daughter into the meeting with the Prime Minister of japan . I mean, these conflicts go on and on. To play devils advocate and, joe, i will pose this to you. There are some who say let the president elect end up in the white house, explain what his plan is to put this wall up between his business dealings and personal dealings and then start to look at some of the criticism that julian is talking about. Does the president elect deserve the benefit of the doubt, joe . No, because theres only one way to do it. Its a blind trust. Go ahead, joe. I think youve got to give the president elect time, of course, to sort these matters out with his analysts and his legal team and with the Incoming White House counsel to make sure there are no conflicts. I mean, i think americans are comfortable if the president himself has no conflicts of interest in doing the business of the American Government as opposed to his personal business, as long as hes able to make a clear separation from that and americans are satisfied with that and theres no slippage, no overreach, i think yjoe, with all due respect, youre a great guy, but that is also a weasel response. There is only one way to ensure against this kind of corruption. It is either to divest all of your assets or to create a or to create a blind trust. Theres no middle ground there. Theres no other way to do it. When you say give him time to meet with his advisers, this is pathway thats been gone over for decades and decades in terms of attorneys and folks that deal with conflicts of interest. I mean, look at what this president did with taiwan. Theres numerous reports that president elect trump is looking to expand his business interests in taiwan. He places this unprecedented call to the president of taiwan breaking a longstanding press debit in terms of our policy with china, but theres a business interest there. Look at what he did i wouldnt be your response. Look at what he now wants let me finish. Look at what he wants to do getting the taxpayers to foot the bill for the costs of the trump tower where hes going to be living, spending part of his time, and the trump plane. The endless conflicts, the endless possibility for corruption is unlike anything weve ever seen where donald trump can use the goodwill of the American People, the taxpayers funds to advance his own interest interests. Theres one way to solve this, joe. It is only a fullscale divestiture or a blind trust. Theres no middle ground here, and the fact that the president doesnt want to do that shows he doesnt understand this issue. I actually said this just a few weeks ago, that i expected he would likely use a blind trust as a way to keep away from any potential conflict of interest. I wouldnt be surprised if he did that, but nonetheless, i think the president elect deserves time to do that, to actually implement a blind trust, and so we ought to give him that time. Joe and i are in agreement. The blind trust is the only do shall. Sorry. Julian epstein, joe watkins, appreciate it.
