Okay, im out. Im late. I owe you 50 seconds, david. I will pay you back. Thank you very much, alex. Appreciate it. Hey, everyone. Im david gura at nbc headquarters in new york. A tale of two president s. President barack obama is blasting President Trump. He was trying to take credit for this incredible thing thats happening to our country. And president obama says President Trump is capitalizing on resentment. It did not start with donald trump. He is a symptom, not the cause. Hes just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years. President obama is speaking in anaheim, california. Well bring you his comments live as soon as they begin, which collude or not to collude. George papadopoulos, former Campaign Aide to donald trump, sentenced to 14 days in prison after he pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his contact with russian operatives. President trump mocking that sentence on twitter. And turmoil in the Trump White House. Bob woodwards new book hit store shelves on the heels of the anonymous oped published in the New York Times. But we begin with former president barack obama back in the arena campaigning for Democratic Candidates in california today. Well look at live pictures of anaheim where hes scheduled to speak around 2 45 p. M. Eastern time. This comes one day after he took on his successor, President Trump, calling him, quote, a threat to democracy and accusing him of promoting fear. It did not start with donald trump. He is a symptom, not the cause. [ applause ] hes just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years. Well, President Trump wasted no time. Here is how the current president responded. And he said, what did you think of president obamas speech . And i said, im sorry, i watched it but i fell asleep. I found it very good, very good for sleeping. Like always, Steve Paterson is in anaheim, california, where president obama is scheduled to speak shortly. Also with me is charlie savage, a washington correspondent for the New York Times and msnbc contributor. And tracey is with us in new york. The former president is scheduled to be there stumping for seven Democratic Candidates out in california. What can we expect today, steve . Reporter well, expect sort of the cliff notes speech that he delivered in illinois yesterday. You can hear the crowd now surging behind me. This traditional republican stronghold, orange county, has been packed filled with democrats. This room probably about 800 strong now. A very small room, standing room only, so the democratic turnout here is at a maximum. They are awaiting former president obama to make his remarks in a few minutes. Hes expected to sort of talk about the same things he mentioned in illinois. Searing indictment of the Republican Party, of the Trump Administration, and something i think got lost in a lot of the coverage, an indictment on millenial voters who he framed as sort of too complacent to come out to vote. So that is going to be a huge focus of today, getting people ready to vote, getting people to sort of stand up and make a change. Thats sort of been his message moving forward. And it has been really embraced by the Democratic Party here in california. Meanwhile, republicans also say they are awaiting the president saying that his campaigning has done nothing but brought them good fortune. We will see today as hes set to make his speech in a few moments. Part of this, though, is that indictment on the Republican Party. The former president framing the party as sort of the party of the paranoid. One who will play a sound bite for you, actually, sorry, we dont have the soundbite for you, but thats another topic expected to talk about in just a few minutes, stumping for the seven candidates who are at the forefront of the fight here in california. These are districts that voted for Hillary Clinton. But having a traditional incumbent republican at the head of the district. So again, surging democrats awaiting for the president to sort of step in and sort of join the fight here as hes been doing now lately. And joining the political fight, david. Steve patterson at the Anaheim Convention center. Well check in with him throughout the afternoon as we await comments from the former president of the United States. Let me turn to Geoff Bennett at the white house. Tell me a bit more about president obamas strategy. Steve mentioned he was speaking yesterday in illinois, at the university of illinois campus there, he attacked the current president directly. What can we expect over the next two months, geoff . Reporter we expect him to leave from california. Hell go to ohio and campaign for rick who is running for the democratic governor. And hell do the same in pennsylvania. Look, the president , former president , Barack Obamas advisers, had intended up to this point to really observe the tradition of giving President Trump time and space to come into his full presidency. But you heard the former president obama just yesterday say that the stakes are too high to stay on the sidelines. What is interesting about this, you heard President Trump say he was so bored by the speech he fell asleep, we have to say thats not entirely true. We have a team of people who looked into it and found when the obama speech started, the president was talking with reporters. And when the obama speech ended, he was shaking hands with some people he had met along the campaign trail. But what trump said was that obamas reemergence on the National Scene will help energize the Republican Base and drive them out to the polls. The president said this, if that doesnt get you out to vote, nothing will. And david, he has a point. Because when barack obama won the white house, democrats over successful elections really lost the country. They wrapped up historic losses at the state and federal level. Not all of that is obamas fault. He was really a singular character, the nations first black character, that drew out a certain kind of democratic voter and led to a backlash that overtime brought about the election of donald trump. David, i want to play a tape from president obama speaking in illinois yesterday. Lets take a listen to what his message was to the audience there in urbana. The politics are of paranoia and has found a to home in the Republican Party. Charlie, what did you hear in that speech yesterday . He talked to republicans and conservatives. They gathered largely in the audience, comprised of largely students in that area, who did he speak to . Although we in the media tend to play this as obama going after trump, this one guy against the other one guy, if you listen to the speech, including in segments like that, he was really critiquing the entire Republican Party and what it has evolved into before trump arrived on the scene. This is the evolution of the Republican Party into the party of sarah palin, the party of conspiracy theories about benghazi, the party of climate change, denialism and the sort of the tea party thing that was maybe about deficits but maybe was about a reaction to a black president that led to the culmination of the trump presidency. So trumps not on the ballot in november. And hes telling liberals at least, you need to not just be thinking about voting against donald trump, you need to be thinking about this party, our opponents and what they have turned into. In a way that trump has not such a world historian figure but just a symptom of a larger pathology. He talked about a lot of contemporary issues, talked about things that happened recently, including the president s tweets about and to Jeff Sessions, the attorney general. Lets take a listen to what he had to say about Jeff Sessions. It should not be democratic or republican. It should not be a partisan issue. To say that we do not pressure the attorney general or the fbi to use the criminal Justice System as a cudule to punish our political opponents. I have heard the term unprecedented used several times today. Talk about what president obama is doing here. How big of a moment is this that president obama has made to go in a direct fashion against his successor to talk about the issues so explicitly . I think a pretty big one. You see this and hes definitely breaking with precedent here. But one of the other things in the speech yesterday is this is the first time you saw former president obama use trumps name. Thats very different for him, but i also think a little bit its a signal that, hey, youre going to be out there during the midterms, so am i. And sort of challenging trump in terms of trying to energize each his perspective base. Geoff bennett, yesterday the president was traveling and the day before as well. There were media availabilities and times he spoke to reporters. And he kept being asked about the oped in the New York Times. Well talk about it over the next few hours, but what is the latest . The president was described as a volcanic mood, trying to fare out whoever wrote this oped. The Senior Administration official. What is the latest from the white house on that piece that appeared in the New York Times . Reporter well, david, people close to the president say hes enraged and frustrated by this and been fuming since the oped was published. But i have to tell you even if sources close to the president werent telling us that, it would be entirely evident based on the president s own statements, his own tweets and comments about it. So yes, he does want to know who was behind this oped. He suggested his attorney general should get involved, should investigate. Although the white house is pushing back on that. Theres been some reporting that the president has whittled this list down to just a handful, maybe a dozen or so of people. He said that himself, that he has it narrowed down to four or five people. Ill tell you based on our reporting, theres nothing to suggest that it is actually the case. But again, this is something that has consumed the president s attention. Of course, this compounded by the new book from bob woodward which really underscores a lot of the same things evident in the oped. All this against the backdrop of the former trump loyalists, close confidants, who struck the cooperation deals with federal prosecutors. So the president is really catching it from all sides here, david. I got to read a statement from the New York Times yesterday after the president suggested the Justice Department may go after the New York Times in some way. To find out who the individual is, quote, were confident that the department of justice understand that is the First Amendment protects all american citizens and that it would not participate in such a blatant abuse of government power. The president s threats, both underscore, why we must safeguard the identity of the writer of this oped and serve as a reminder of the importance of a free and independent press to american democracy. Charlie savage, on one side of the fire wall, his colleagues on the editorial wall on the other. Bear in mind, charlie, i want to ask you to talk about the bob woodward book. Here in short form, we are allowing the grievances laid out by people in Bob Woodwards book set to be released this week. Whats the effect these two things have on the white house as you see them . Well, it is certainly a onetwo punch reminding people that even those who are very close to the president , who are, in fact, working for him, see that this is a very unusual moment. This is not a normal presidency. And, you know, they all reinforce each other. Its not like we first heard this from bob woodward or the anonymous oped. All our sources and not just the New York Times has been hearing this from the start. There was the earlier fire and fury book. That resonates with this as well. This is just a very strange time for america. And even those closest to the white house appear to be fully aware of that. And that is part of the unusual nature of the times we are living through. I want to ask you about the latest on bob muellers investigation. We had the sentencing for George Papadopoulos yesterday. He will spend 14 days in jail as a result of the crimes he committed. Talk continues about interview between the president and Robert Mueller and his team. Rudy giuliani on thursday telling the ap the questions will be answered in written form. That was not going to happen. He backtracked on that. You heard a fine piece just looking at the role of Rudy Giuliani here and articulated or defining that strategy in some way. What is your sense of the latest of what his legal team is thinking . Yeah, i think it is very obvious. You keep seeing Rudy Giuliani shifting the goalposts. And it seems as if its hard to figure out what his broad strategy is, if there is any, but what is interesting right now when we look at the time period we just entered, it says arbitrary 60day window ahead of the mid terms. Sop kind of seeing how Rudy Giuliani moves forward and sort of what, if he continues to sort of wave to this pr campaign, but i think one of the interesting things is they are really trying to present a narrative that they are trying to cooperate with the special counsel. They are trying to be open to different options when it comes to the interview. But i think when you talk to any legal expert, they will say the worst thing donald trump could do is sit down with the special counsel. You know, they really see it as just a situation where he would not be very successful at all. And i think recently i was speaking with a number of folks who worked with mueller over the years who really said that they believe hes not really banking on the interview with the president , but really is going to just keep his team working and moving forward, even during this window ahead of the midterms. Abbie, thank you so much for joining me. Geoff bennett joining me from washington, d. C. , thank you. Up next, well talk about George Papadopoulos as we await comments from president obama. We are waiting for president obama to speak on behalf of seven Democratic Congressional candidates. The president having spoken in illinois yesterday is hitting the campaign trail in earnest. Hes expected to go to pennsylvania and illinois in the coming months. He endorsed 81 candidates for office just a couple weeks ago. We are now seeing him hit the campaign trail a day after attacking President Trump directly. We will bring you the comments from the 44th president of the United States live just as soon as they begin in about 20 minutes time. As we heard, George Papadopoulos has been sentenced to two weeks in prison. President trumps former Foreign Policy adviser was sentenced friday after admitting he lied to the fbi about contacts he had with russia. The judge also fined papadopoulos 9500 and ordered papadopoulos to compete 200 hours of community service. And hell be on probation for one year after he is released from custody. Well n a new interview with cnn taped just before that sentencing, George Papadopoulos responded to a question about whether he told the Trump Campaign about the russians claim to have on then candidate Hillary Clinton. I might have, but i have no recollection of doing so. I cant guarantee it. All i can say is my memory never shared it with anyone on the campaign. Joining me is ken delaney along with guy lewis. Ken, let me start with you. Put this into context for us here. Two weeks time, not a whole lot of time, what does this tell you about the course of the investigation . This sentencing yesterday . Well, look, George Papadopoulos as it turns out was not quite as big a fish as some people thought he might be when the arrest was announced. There was a lot of talk of, did he wear a wire or was he cooperating . It turns out he did not cooperate with the mueller team, so he didnt get a downward departure from the sentence for that, but the reason he got 14 days or not 30 or 60 days is because he had no prior criminal record and the judge seemed to take to heart and believe his expressions of remorse in the courtroom yesterday. And his apologies for his conduct and to his family. But look, that question that he seems to have no memory of the answer to about who did he share within the Trump Campaign, the idea that he was offered dirt and emails that the russians had on Hillary Clinton. Thats the key question. And while he may not remember, i guarantee that Robert Mueller knows the answer. Because papadopoulos was abroad. He was in london. He mainly communicated with his campaign handlers through email. And mueller has all those emails. So he knows absolutely for sure who papadopoulos told about that offer from the russian agent of emails. The other things thing about papadopoulos, two things, one is that he is now contradicted the account of Jeff Sessions and donald trump. He says he in a meeting where the two men were present, he approached the idea of brokering a meeting between Vladimir Putin and donald trump. Or russians and the Trump Campaign. And he says that Jeff Sessions looked favorably on that idea. And that donald trump nodded as if to say, he approved. Now, both of the men deny that. And the other interesting thing that happened yesterday, david, is that papadopoulos lawyer suggested that donald trump obstructed the fbi investigation far more than papadopoulos did because he called it a witch hunt and fake news just days before young George Papadopoulos went in for his interview with the fbi. And the lawyer was suggesting that was one of the reasons papadopoulos decided to lie to the fbi, essentially, his boss was saying this investigation was illegitimate. I think that comment will have repercussions going forward. Guy lewis, we have heard from this president about the sentencing yesterday, he talked about it and tweeted about it. Of course, let me read the tweet about that. 14 days for 28 million, he wrote, 2 million a day. No collusion. A great day for america. Well read the sarcasm into the last sentence there. Dont know where the 28 million figure comes from. It was estimated to 16 million for the investigation so far as of march this year. Talk to what ken was eluding to there. The role hes played in bob muellers investigation. You heard from one of the prosecutors yesterday telling the judge the investigation has been hampered by the fact that he was not a willing coop ray or the in this investigation. Help us know the role he played in this information or how he hindered the investigation . I agree with a lot of what ken is saying. I do think, though, when you boil it down as a prosecutor who did this for a long, long time, papadopoulos has turned out to be a bust, to be honest with you. I mean, i dont think hes usable now as a witness. That sort of watered down vanilla statement that he gave to cnn doesnt help mueller. Frankly, in the least, when you come out and look at his sentence, 14 days, i represented on both sides now. And anybody who goes through the criminal Justice System at the federal level, you dont want to do it. Its no good if you get one day or ten years. But you Better Believe that the length of a sentence is important. 14 days, and that is why trump can come out and say, hey, this is a bunch of mickey mouse. 14 days for all of this. And the reason why thats important, david, is because when you go to the next target or even potential target and say, hey, flash the badge, were with the fbi, we need you to tell the truth. You want the potential sentence to be a deterrent, right . You have to tell the truth or im going to get hammered. 14 days is not getting hammered. It is something, though. And its the first time we have had somebody charged here. Guy, how important is that . I saw a lot of people making hay out of that yesterday, it is a turning point in the investigation, having someone sentenced this way. Thats a great question. But heres what is more important. I think what is more important is both rick gates, his sentencing is still coming up, remember, and certainly manafort on the convictions that just occurred. Eventually, manaforts going to be subject to sentencing. Now, as i calculate, rick gates guidelines, sort of the parameters of what hes looking at, david, i think hes looking at about four to six years. That is a real sentence. However, he cooperated, hes testified, and so hes going to get a reduction in sentence based on his cooperation. If that comes out to be about probation or something, then maybe that sort of turns the argument around and says, look, youre going to face a lot of time, but you have if you cooperate and tell the truth, youll get a reduced sentence. Manafort, hes going to go to the moon. Im telling you, he faces 10, 12, maybe up to 15 years. Which for him is a life sentence. Thats why theres a lot of pressure on him, david, to cooperate and try to get a reduction as well. Ken, lets spend some time on that pressure. We are into this period between the first trial that took place in virginia and the second one slated to begin soon in washington, d. C. From your reporting, what is the latest on those conversations, if any, between paul manafort, his legal team and bob mueller and his team . Well, i actually dont have we have seen reports in bloomberg and elsewhere that manafort is in plea discussions. We have not confirmed that at nbc news. But it was not surprise me at the least because as guy said, hes facing overwhelming evidence. He was one juror away from being convicted on all counts in the first trial. As it is, hes facing nine years under federal sentencing guidelines. Thats not the maximum, thats what the guidelines call for in the first trial. The second trial hes facing up to 15 years. Those sentences could be combined in a way that makes them longer. The second trial also goes into areas that the first trial didnt include like witness tampering and failure to register as a foreign lobbyist for ukraine. It is a dangerous territory for paul manafort. If hes not in plea discussions, it suggests hes playing for a pardon. And you also wonder where hes getting the millions of dollars that the defense must be costing him. He has a highpowered team of lawyers. David, i want to go back to a thing on the papadopoulos sentence, how do you get 14 days for lying to the fbi . As it turns out yesterday, the judge in court said he looked at all the sentencing for the crime of lying to investigators for people with no prior criminal record, and in 60 of the cases over the last year, the defendant got no jail time at all. And recall that alex vanderzal got 30 days. That seems like a light sentence to many normal people, thats standard for what the guidelines call for in this case. Ken delaney, guy lewis, thank you for your time and for the analysis. Were going to go focus next here on weeks of backlash over child separation. Hes stumping for seven candidates for congress. His first speech of the Midterm Election cycle. He delivered a speech yesterday in illinois. He directly attacked the president of the United States and his policies. Hes stumping for seven congressional kaents with the speech slated to start in 15 minutes time. Well bring that to you live here on msnbc. More than 400 Migrant Children are separated from their parents in the United States. And the new rule by the department of security and the department of health and Human Services would allow the u. S. Government to keep migrant kids in detention indefinitely. Just a reminder here, its been more than a month since the quart ordered the president S Administration to reunite the families it tore apart systematically as part of the socalled zero tolerance policy. Of the 416 children still separated, 304 of them have already been deported and 14 of them are under the age of 15. Meanwhile, the Trump White House continues to undermine the senior officials in immigration. Three officials said the Trump Administration rejected the report that they are a threat, major security threat. This will allow the families to be kept in detention indefinitely . David, it breaks my heart. This change of rule is a front to americas compassion and decency. When i look at the images and the entire amount of images of the children who have been placed in cages separated from their mothers, it is a front to americas decency and it must not withstand, america will not accept that. Each and every human being, especially of our children, must be treated with dignity and compassion. On the issue of regees, we have seen a number of refugees that have been allowed in this country. New reporting is that it is also a policy of thiS Administration. Factoring in the travel ban case being argued before the u. S. Supreme court, you wrote to the court, submitted a brief of your own, criticizing that travel ban program. What is your reaction to the new reporting, that were seeing an administration averse allowing refugees into this country . Well, theres a larger issue involved here. We have an incompetent loud mouth bully in the office of the president. To whom we stood. And we still believe and have faith in our count city tugs constitution that should prevail albeit thiS Administrations assaults on the communities. The rule of law will prevail and shall prevail. Theyre selecting and then pushing the nomination without transparency in the case that they see that this will not last too long. Administrations come and go. President s come and go. Majorities come and go. But the legacy remains. And the republic of the legacy had been that they have an assault, they have committed and they continue to launch assault on immigrants and communities against the advice of the leaders in the national security, that these communities are no threat to americas security. We have saddened, we are saddened to see their appreciation of the communities to the wellbeings of the United States. And it should not last too long. We are hopeful come the 6th of november, the first stop to stop this craziness. This illegal, illogical assault on the american values, american compassion, american constitution, american rule of law, will be stopped. And thereafter, thereafter it is obligatory on each and every american to elect and select better leaders. We have seen that we selected and then we elected a bully and incompetent to the presidency. And we are reaping the consequences of that. But i still have faith many any nation, i still have faith in my constitution, and i still have faith in the rule of law regardless the party that claims to be the party of family values, standing aside, standing on the sidelines waiting for the administration to launch assault on the families of these communities. I want to go back to 2016 when you delivered that landmark speech at the Democratic National convention. Your frustration, your outrage was palpable, but there was also, as i heard it, a tinge of optimism there. In saying you would give you copy of the constitution to then candidate donald trump. There was, again, optimism, i think, that he might read it. And learn from it. Here we are in 2018, and i wonder how much of that optimism, however small it was, remains for you. Well, i am disappointed. We were hoping that once he gets to the office of presidency, he will dignify himself, he will dignify the office, but he has done quite opposite. He has indignified the highest office of this land, highest office of this nation. We are disappointed but our belief is reaffirmed that our constitutional values, our rule of law, our institutions will survive. Damaged . Yes. By the hand of this president , yes. By the hands of republican majority, yes. But then it is up to us, ordinary citizens, to make sure that we make our institutions whole. That we uphold our constitution. The rest of the world, the implication of this president s actions throughout the world is so disheartening. We have been made but of jokes throughout the world by this president and hiS Administration. But our turn shall come so that we can restrengthen our rule of law, restrengthen our institutions and restrengthen our democracy. There is one thing that is so evident. And that is that most corrupt totalitarian leaders of the world have same apparatus. They operate on two things, they do not like free press. They do not like rule of law. They want to appoint their own judges, the media, the free press is their number one enemy. I want you or your audience to draw the conclusion. Look at the behavior of this president against the free press, the fourth pillar of our democracy, look at his behavior. And the republicans have joined him in touting the course, electing, nominating and then confirming unden serving candidates to the Supreme Court. This candidate, this judge being considered for the highest office, we do not know anything about him. Only 10 is revealed. There is no transparency. The more we know about this judge, judge kavanaugh, the more we discover that there had been this had been a political act that had been nominated to crowd the Supreme Court. This tarnishes i humbly suggest to the republican majority, their behavior of rushing this candidate to Supreme Court tarnishes the impartiality, the dignity, the highest regard we have for the Supreme Court in the hearts and minds of the United States of america. And the rest of the world. Lastly, i want to ask you about senator john mccain who passed away just a short while ago. After you and your wife appeared at the Democratic National convention, you for blasted by the now president of the United States. He came to your defense, while our party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us. Just the minute that we have left with you, i wonder if you would like to reflect senator john mccain and reflect on you and your wife and the appearance in the dnc. He was the most decent human being friend that we will not ever have, but he was kind enough after that hoopla of 2016. He called and spoke with us, condemning the treatment that we received by the hands of donald trump and encouraging us to remain standing, he said that to us by encouraging look at the decency of that human being. We mourn his loss. But in his spirit, he remains with us. He remains with america and the goodness of america. Kazir kahn, a pleasure to speak with you. Thank you very much for your time. Thank you. Still ahead, President Trump is on the attack ahead of Bob Woodwards book release. And who is the mole of the mystery surrounding the anonymous New York Times oped piece and how the president is trying to take matters into his own hands to get the author to reveal his or her identity. Steve, what is the latest that youre hearing . Reporter david, a little bit of an update, probably in 15 minutes the former president is expected to take the stage. About 800 people have packed this sort of tiny ballroom for certainly for a former president. But you can see the level of turnout based on the level of excitement for him to speak. Since he made that speech in illinois, i think the excitement level is really ramping up, specifically when you talk to folks like the dccc organizing events like this. Hes expected to make some of the statements he made in illinois, talking about sort of the indictment of the Republican Party, of the Trump Administration, and on millenial voters that he wants to get out to vote. Specifically in these key places, like orange county. You mentioned the seven seats, those are seven districts that went for Hillary Clinton in 2016. But have been traditionally republicanheld districts. In many cases, with incumbents there for years if not decades. So youre asking voters to make a big change. That is why the Democratic Party is wheeling out the big guns with the former president who is expected to speak again in now just a few minutes. David . My colleague, Steve Patterson in anaheim. Among the 808 waiting to hear from president obama. And in an Early Morning tweet, Bob Woodwards book was called a scam and accused the journalist of making up quotes. The president said the book could not be accurate because, quote, i dont talk the way im quoted. Bob woodward says President Trump declined to be interviewed for the book. And the Pulitzer Prize winner stands by his book. My thanks to ken delanian for sticking with me. Ken, we have had a number of books of what goes on inside the Trump Administration. This one by someone who has won the Pulitzer Prize and brought down a president in the past. Tell us a bit about his methods. This is not the First Administration that bob woodward has written about in book form. This is different because it is bob woodward. His methods are to reconstruct dialogue based on what two sources told him what was said. And so, of course, is it possible that some of the dialogue is inaccurate, not 100 right on the money . Of course. Memories are faulty. People remember different things. But the way he triang lates information, generally the accuracy of his books have not been challenged. And the picture he paints here is so deeply disturbing, though it wont be surprising to anyone who watches msnbc or regularly reads the New York Times or the washington post. In fact, he confirms some previous nbc reporting like the fact that trump called his chief of staff john kelly and idiot and erupted volcanically in a secret meeting about afghanistan policy because he was so frustrated with the proposals that his generals were presenting him. But, i mean, just the words that people are using even in reviews of the woodward book to describe the president of the United States. Emotionally overwrought, unpredictable leader, childish, it will have reactions internationally, david. And right now the economy is booming and we have to we havent been involved in the international crisis, but that is not necessarily going to be the status quo forever. How do we deal with an emotionally unpredictable president when something really bad happens . Thats what a lot of people who are reading this book are wondering. Natasha, you have looked at this book and seen the advanced copy of it published this week. What is your take away substancewise. We are looking at the oped published in the New York Times to paint a similar picture of this president of what is going on inside thiS Administration. What is your take away from the substance of these two things . Yeah, i think that taken together the oped and the book clearly corroborate each other. Based on his conversations with everyone that he spoke to in and around the white house this president has a very short attention span. He is known to have flip his moods on the flip of a coin. He does not have an interest in learning about Foreign Affairs or anything really having to do with the military. He is very, very impulsive. He trade agreement with south korea and of course, gary cohen, in order to keep him from doing that, which is what the author of oped said they were doing. From his sights, taging him out of his sight so he would be acting on it. So it just paints a picture of a very erratic, impulsive president and thats what his supporters said they wanted. They wanted someone who was an outsider, who wasnt beholden to the washington establishment. What is the point at which that gets dangerous. I think it also answers a question that many people have asked, which is why do so many people stick around. People like john kelly and general mattis stay in thiS Administration. We get the answer. In the book and in oped, which is that they are trying to save the country from the president and trying to save the president from himself even. These people are staying in their positions because they see themselves as doing a lot more positive things in that position than they would if they resigned. Now the author of this oped can be critiqued for not coming forward with his real name, but for now, what were see sg this effort to get this message out that there are people inside the Administration Working to stop the president s worst impulses. Its a nol thing. The dual track or two track presidencies referred to in the New York Times oped. Ken, i want to ask you about this astonishing tape that was released by bob woodward and the washington post. You read the president declined to be interviewed for this book. Its really remarkable, 11 minutes piece long of tape here. The president calling bob woodward saying he tried many ways to get to the president to get him to it for the interview. What does that tell you report ing on this white house, why bob woodward would want or need to do that . The first thing i thought was now if we want to make sure donald trump gets the message, call his personal secretary. Which he said. He went through the press office and other sbeer immediate yars and lindsey graham. It was so cynical. Everyone listening to that, donald trump was trying to dovr himself and suggest he never got the message that bob woodward wanted to talk to him. Cooperating and having interviews, donald trump wasnt in their best interest. There were questions they couldnt answer. Its just, its sort of the way these guys operate. You know, they tell you that black is white right to your face and dare you to challenge them. Kellyanne conway is on the tape. Trump brings her to the phone and he said kellyanne, we sat and had lunch about this. Shebt she says, no, i brought it to other mysterious people in the white house and we decided we werent going to cooperate with you, bob. It was just ridiculous and very emblematic of what weve seen for months. Thanks for joining me to talk about that book. Published at this coming week. As we await comments from the 34th president of the United States in california at a campaign rally, theres a look inside the ballroom at the Anaheim Convention center. Those remarks scheduled to begin at any moment. Joining me here shortly, weve got steve, my colleague in anaheim for that speech. Jeff bennett, who covers the white house for nbc. Also, natasha, a staff writer for the atlantic and mark stern who covered the Supreme Court and greg store, a Supreme Court reporter for bloomberg news. Going to spend some time talk ing about Brett Kavanagh. Lets go to anaheim first to steve and steve, you mentioned a moment ago, were a little bit behind schedule here waiting for the 44th president to begin. What can we expect from him . Right now, were hear iing a lot of pop music, trying to keep the crowd hyped. Theyve been standing for quite some time now awaiting the former president to show up. About 800 strong that have packed this relatively small ballroom. You can see the people packed pretty close together. Theyre excited to hear remarks from the former president , specifically after he gave remarks to the illinois crowd. Some of the same rhetoric. The sering indictments basically against the Republican Party, against the administration, against voters who he sort of characterized as complacent in a lot of cases, trying to get people hyped up ready to vote. And particularly is a big issue here in orange county. This is the seat for so many of those seven districts that are really in play, that the democrats nationally are really targeting. Theyre looking at those districts because those are traditional republican districts to have a republican incumbent but the win for Hillary Clinton in 2016, so theyre vulnerable. A lot of those places, too, have democrats a democrats with surging fund raising. These are where the targets are. The meat of the race for the house of representatives is and this is why the former president s arrival is so expected, so awaited. And you have people here waiting basically with bated breath. You were listening to the speech yesterday in illinois. It was not a Campaign Speech per se, but what are you going to be listen iing for with barack oba today . I want to see if he sort of modulates what he said yesterday. Yesterday, he offered up the comprehensive condemnation of not just President Trump, but the party for what obama said for failing to have the backbone that make our democracy work. Weve already sceeen how former president obama has really thrown off his selfimposed political exile and hes now sort of embraced in this antagonistic political embrace with donald trump, a man who lets not forget made the bridge from Reality Television to politics with the lie of birtherism, suggesting that barack obama was in some way, not fully american. So you have this clash of temperment. This clash clearly of politics, but you have this clash of style and just today, former president obama, just going to stop calling him former and current. Just today. Obama recorded a video aimed at Younger Voters as part of his effort to really mobilize the millennial set who he says at times has been indifferent. Will it work . We dont know. We know people who in the past have
