Today, President Trump and joe biden are holding dual events in wisconsin and minnesota, and were watching for the president to leave the white house any moment now. Hanging over all of this, a pandemic. Our country just crossed the 9 million covid19 case mark on thursday alone the United States broke another terrible record, a high of more than 90,000 cases in a single day. Lets hit the trail with our reporters, nbcs mike memoli is in des moines, iowa, following the Biden Campaign. Monica alba is in waterford township in michigan. Shes covering the Trump Campaign. And nbcs Priscilla Thompson is in ft. Worth, texas, ahead of a Campaign Swing by senator harris. It is also the last day of early voting there in the Lone Star State. Mr. Memoli, ill start with you. This is the first time weve seen mr. Biden hit three states today. Why now . Well, craig, its an interesting week when joe biden went down south to georgia earlier this week and then on to florida. The conversation among some democrats especially on twitter was, why is biden spending time in these states when he needs to shore up that blue wall in the midwest, especially . Then yesterday, when the Biden Campaign announced that he was adding minnesota to a day in which he was already scheduled to go to iowa and to wisconsin, the conversation among some nervous democrats, especially on twitter, was, oh, no, why is he going to the midwest . Is it a sign of weakness. For the Biden Campaign, their perspective is, this is just an example of how they have multiple paths to the presidency. Biden himself was asked about what this all meant this morning as he began making his way to des moines. Lets take a listen to how he explained it . I take no concern. Were going to be in iowa, well be in wisconsin, i thought i would stop in minnesota. I dont take anything for granted. Well work for every single vote up to the last minute. So what else are they not taking for granted . You know, we like to say at nbc, florida, florida, florida is the decisive state. This election, the Biden Campaign has been all about pennsylvania, pennsylvania, pennsylvania. The campaign announcing this morning that hes going to be heading there to philadelphia on sunday and on monday, joe biden, jill biden, Kamala Harris and doug imhoff, her husband, theyll be fanned out across pennsylvania. That key battleground state which has been a focus all along for the battleground campaign, their final focus as we head into the final weekend, craig. Meanwhile, mike, as we hear free bird blare in the background there, theres been a bit of a dustup between joe biden and facebook over the last few days, the campaign, at least. Whats that about . Reporter yeah, craig, theres been a little bit of a cold war throughout this campaign between the Biden Campaign and facebook. The Biden Campaign believing that facebook was not acting aggressively enough to stop the spread of disinformation. The more recent flap is all about new facebook rules they instituted. They announced in september and began taking affect this week, having to do with advertising that they would be running in the final week. A set of rules for both campaigns for independent super pacs, as well, about the rules that you had to meet in order to have advertising on the platform. The Biden Campaign saying that despite their efforts to understand those rules fully and work with facebook to get them posted, a number of the ads that they believe met the requirements that facebook set were not being posted. It cost them a significant amount of online fundraising. Facebook saying there was no partisan motivation to any of these issues and that theyre working fast to address it. But just another sign of how big tech is playing an Important Role in politics and the Biden Campaign having some issues with it. All right. Mike memoli in des moines. Stand by. President trump overlapping with joe biden in iowa and wisconsin, but michigan is all his. Wheres he going in michigan . Reporter hell be in wartford township in just a couple of hours, craig. And its in oakland county, a place that he actually lost four years ago to Hillary Clinton, but of course, thats because this state was his most razorthin margin of any place that he won. The critical rust belt, michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania, delivering him the white house, in effect. And the terrain is not as confident that all three of those states will be in his corner this time. Theyre feeling very optimistic about other key battlegrounds like florida and north carolina. Just like memoli pointed out, pennsylvania is where they can see this thing coming down to the fire. Theyre less confident about what theyve seen in michigan and wisconsin, and thats why hes coming here to campaign and heading over to wisconsin. But both of these states in the midwest seeing a critical surge in coronavirus case. That is the major backdrop here. And in michigan, you see something else, which is this bitter back and forth between the president and the democratic governor here, gretchen whitmer, who of course, a plan to kidnap and kill her was foiled several weeks ago. The president has been talking about that at all of his recent rallies in michigan. We can expect more of that today, and it comes as she continues to criticize him for holding these giant events in the states, thousands expected here in waterford township to gather as those cases and hospitalizations are on the rise, craig. So as you see recordsetting early numbers, the Trump Campaign feeling very optimistic what theyre seeing about people who actually republicans are going to vote early, but what theyre not talking about is the recordsetting numbers with covid, as the president simply continues to try to dismiss this and his eldest son, donald trump jr. Even saying on fox news overnight, that there arent as many deaths as there were. In fact, 942 people lost their lives yesterday. And we are well over 220,000 people total. Its not something the Trump Campaign wants to embrace and its not something the white house has focused at all on in the last couple of days, seeming to channel all of their energy to the reelect campaign, instead, as the pandemic continues to surge, craig. Okay. Monica alba there, ahead of the president s rally in waterford township. Lets go to texas now, priscilla, early voting, were told, just surpassed its 2016 vote total, vote total and theres still one day left of early voting there in texas. How significant is senator harris visit to that state today and where is the senator going to be going in texas . Reporter yeah, craig, more than 9 Million People here in the state of texas have already cast blots. And thats more than 50 of the registered voters on the rolls here in texas right now. So Kamala Harris is really here today to reach out and mobilize those folks, who are likely not turning out until election day on tuesday. And so shes going to be starting her day here in ft. Worth, texas. This encompasses a county that donald trump won by more than eight points in 2016. But then this county voted for beto orourke in 2018. Its one of those sort of suburban areas that could flip from being a trump hold in 2016 to possibly going blue this time around. And then notably, after she leaves here, shes heading to mcallen, texas. That is a border community, predominantly latino, that has really been ravaged by covid19. And you know, latest polls have shown that biden is underperforming with latino voters in this state, compared to what Hillary Clinton did in 2016. So Kamala Harris is certainly looking to help shore up some of that support today, before she ends her day in houston, texas, harris county, the largest county in the state, where more than 1. 3 Million People have already cast ballots. And i should point out that this isnt just about the president ial. There are also a number of congressional seats that democrats could pick up here and a senate seat that is pretty competitive. And so mj hager, who is running against john cornyn, is going to be campaigning with Kamala Harris today. And it so will be interesting to see what impact this visit could also have on some of those races. Craig . Priscilla thompson there in ft. Worth. Priscilla, thank you. Mr. Memoli, thank you. Monica, thank you. We have now reached more than 9 million cases of coronavirus in this country. That is more than the populations of wisconsin and iowa combined. Here are the latest facts on the pandemic. 90,000 new cases reported in just the last 24 hours. It is again a new daily record. Its also 10,000 more than the record that was set the day before. Today, new covid restrictions take effect in chicago. Indoor dining and bar service, once again, shut down in this countrys Third Largest city. Illinois just shattering its singleday record thursday, with more than 6,300 new cases. And dr. Fauci, out with another new warning, small indoor gatherings are driving the spread of this virus. Dr. Fauci saying thanksgiving celebrations will only make that worse. And hes not the only one concerned. This is what one doctor had to say in a video shared with msnbc. Do not have extended family, inperson, indoor gatherings at thanksgiving. We dont want you having your family over and someone getting covid and being on a ventilator by christmas. Lets turn now to dr. Uche blackstock. Dr. Blackstock is a yahoo news medical contributor. Also the founder and ceo of advancing health equity. Shes also an emergency room physician. And dr. Blackstock, lets start with that stark warning from dr. Fauci about thanksgiving. How concerned are you . What advice do you have for people who are considering getting together in some capacity for the holiday . Well, first, thank you for having me, craig. I cant even echo that er physicians warnings enough. As weve seen these small social gatherings have been driving up infections across the country over the last few weeks, i understand, i want to see my own family, too, but, you know, my recommendation also is that thanksgiving should be an occasion with immediate household members and to not involve extended family, thats multigenerational. You have other individuals who are older and at risk for being infected and doing poorly, and like that physician said, they may end up in the intensive care unit by christmas. And thats all preventable. Dr. Blackstock, state officials are sounding the alarm, as well, about a lack of federal Funds Available to them to distribute a vaccine when it becomes available. The cdc telling them to be ready for it by midnovember. Is that a feasible timeline . This is very concerning. Millions of dollars were put into vaccine development, but it seems like not enough resources have been put into the distribution process. For distribution, equipment is needed, as well as educational outreach. We need a Public Health campaign to convince many of those out there who have vaccine hesitancy, given the level of political interference weve seen over the last few months, we want them to be able to take a safe and effective vaccine. So i definitely do have concerns about whether local and state departments will be ready to distribute a vaccine should one be ready in midnovember. They need the funds from this administration as soon as possible. Dr. Uche blackstock, well have to leave it there. Enjoy your weekend, if you can. I mentioned it a few moments ago, there are an eyepopping number of people who voted this year who did not or could not vote in 2016. And so far, democrats outnumber republicans by the millions. Ill talk to former Obama White House adviser Valerie Jarrett about what she sees in those numbers. Theres miss jarrett. Well talk to her in just a moment. Also, an alarming quote from politico. Weve got to stop the bleeding. Why early turnout numbers in miami have democratic officials there sounding the alarm. There sounding the alarm what if one stalk of broccoli could protect you from cancer . What if one pushup could prevent Heart Disease . One wishful thinking, right . But there is one step adults 65 or older can take to help prevent another serious disease pneumococcal pneumonia. One dose of the prevnar 13® vaccine can help protect you from this bacterial lung disease that may even put you in the hospital. Its not a yearly shot. Prevnar 13® is used in adults to help prevent infections from 13 strains of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia. Dont get prevnar 13® if youve had a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine or its ingredients. Adults with weakened immune systems may have a lower response to the vaccine. The most common side effects were pain, redness and swelling at the injection site, limited arm movement, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, less appetite, vomiting, fever, chills, or rash. Even if youve already been vaccinated with another pneumonia vaccine, prevnar 13® may help provide additional protection. Get this one done. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about prevnar 13® today. This was the theater i came to quite often. The support weve had over the last few months has been amazing. Its not just a work environment. Everyone here is family. The race is tight in georgia, and both candidates know it. President trump is on defense. Former Vice President joe biden wants to flip it blue for the First Time Since 92. And dialing up the urgency this morning, its the last day to vote early in the peach state. Chris jansing is in stone crest, georgia. Thats where Stacey Abrams is going to be making a lastminute push to get out the vote, chris. Explain this push there in stone crest and whats the state of play in georgia right now. Reporter well, the state of yeah, the state of play, craig, could not be tighter. The realclear politics average in georgia is 0. 4 . Its been trending joe biden, but i havent talked to a single democrat thats breathing any kind of sigh of relief, and thats why were going to see a lot of activity here. Sto stonecrest, georgia, i think you can see inside, they must have at least 20 booths set up. A steady stream all day long. 92 of the population here, plus, is black. And this is the kind of area where they want to run up the vote. The final day has always been the biggest turnout. The secretary of state says 400,000 people could vote on this day alone. And the democrats are looking for voters like the guy i just talked to, who said, there is intense pressure within his entire family that everybody get to the polls. Take a listen. All our family, we actually had skype call i mean, a zoom call with our entire family. I have 11 siblings, and we have among us, 40 grandchildren from our parents. And we all had a call and all agreed that everybody in the entire family who is eligible to vote has to get out and do something. Reporter that would make Stacey Abrams smile. Her fair fight project has been fighting relentlessly to get out the plaqblack vote. I just got off the phone from people with the new georgia project, which has been registering lots of new black voters. They are doing something weve barely seen from the democrats. Theyre going doortodoor today for gotv. They also have people who are willing to pick folks up and take them here on this last day of inperson early voting in georgia. Contrast that with what were seeing from the president. Locals say hell go to a deeply conservative part of the state over the weekend, a place where they should not be worried, but they are worried, where day dont have any kind of the early voting numbers that weve seen in places like where i am. And i just got some new numbers. Let me share them with you. In these areas around atlanta, heavily democratic gwinnett county, 238 up from 2016 early voting. Over 300 if you add in the mailin vote. Up in cobb county, 150 . Up in fulton county, 41 . If joe biden wins here, it will be the First Time Since 1992 a democrat has taken this state in the president ial race, craig. And believe me, there is a ton of activity going on. The state of the race is intense. All eyes on georgia and two closely watched senate races there as well. That gentlemen you talked to with 11 siblings and 40 grandchildren. His family alone could very well tilt the scales there in georgia. Chris jansing, chris, thank you so much. Lets turn now to valuerie jarrett. Valerie was Senior Adviser in the Obama White House. Also the author of the New York Times best seller finding my voice. Always good to have you, valerie. We just heard from Chris Jansing there, giving us some she gave us some great insight into early voting in georgia. Lets dig into what were seeing nationwide right now. According to the nbc news decision desk and target smart, more than 20 of the early vote nationwide has come from people who did not or could not vote four years ago. That is by our count a whopping 17. 5 Million People. Breaking that number down, a new democratic voters outnumber Republican Voters by 2 million. How hopeful are you when you see numbers like that or does that create even more anxiety . Well, it makes me very hopeful, but i recognize with four days left, we still have a lot of hard work to do. And if every family could be like that family, that guy that you featured earlier, where they make a call with their entire family and say, everyone who can vote, get out street, thats what a democracy is all about. So the numbers are encouraging, but we still have four more days to go. And so, in the midst of a covid19 virus pandemic, we know everybody has to make a plan, be more thoughtful, wear a mask, but turnout to vote. President trump, as you probably know, he told supporters at a rally on wednesday, quote, the biggest problem we have is if they, meaning democrats, if they cheat with the ballots. Many of his followers are echoing that claim. How concerned are you that President Trump wont accept the results of the election if he should lose . Well, its a possibility. And look, he did this in 2016. He started when he was down in the polls, saying perhaps the election was going to be rigged. And i think, look, his own fbi director, Homeland Security advisers, they all say that we dont have vote fraud in our country. What we have is Voter Suppression in our country. And so i think that we have to vote like our life depends upon it. We have to show up at the polls, we have to give it that and let the process work. The Biden Campaign, as you know, has been deploying its key surrogates like your friends will be with mr. Biden, detroit and flynt. I want does raise an interesting question, valerie. Why isnt the campaign sending Hillary Clinton in person to some of these big events . Well, that, i dont know. But i do know one thing. That Vice President biden worked for all eight years with president obama. Theres no one who knows his skill set better than president obama, and not just his competency and his commitment to service. His empathy for the american people, but his integrity, his character . The way he makes decisions. So i think the best surrogate is out in this final stretch. We know that president obama is a closer and hes looking forward to this weekend, campaigning in michigan. We heard from a reporter a few moments ago on the ground in texas, talking about some of the trouble that mr. Biden has had, convincing his hispanic voters in particular to turn out in the same numbers that they did four years ago or just two years ago, in that closely watched senate race, we also have heard similar reporting out of florida, as well, that the Biden Campaign isnt doing as well with latinx voters in florida as they had hoped. Why is that . Why does the Biden Campaign seem to be struggling with that particular group of voter . I know one thing. The election isnt over. And i think when the election is over, what we are going to see are a Record Number of people of all demographics turning out for Vice President biden. When he says im campaigning as a democrat, but i will governor as an american, i think that that is a message thats resonating broadly with the american people. So we still have time left and i know he and senator harris will be out there earning the trust and respect of the american people. Craig, not just through the campaign, but for his entire time, their entire time in office. Thats a message that i think that is resonating deeply across america. Its a hopeful message, its an optimistic message. Its a unifying message. And i think that thats whats thats whats going to work Valerie Jarrett, were going to have to leave it there. Always a pleasure. And nice to see you. So enjoy, so enjoy the flowers matching the glasses. Some days it works out that way thank you. Stay safe yes, thank you. Florida, florida, florida. Right now, Democratic Party officials are sending up warning flares in miami. Thats according to politico. Ill talk to a former obama pollster and a republican pollster strategist about the new concerns with regards to turnout in florida. Those voters in floridas Miamidade County are just a few of the more than 7 million folks who have already cast their ballot in that state. Im joined now by joel benenson, former Obama Campaign pollster. He was also an adviser for the Pete Buttigieg president ial campaign. Also with me is rick tyler, republican strategist, msnbc political analyst, and author of the book still right. Joel, well start with you, lets start there in florida. Politico reporting, quote, democrats are sounding the alarm about weak voter turnout rates in floridas biggest county, miamidade, where a strong republican showing is endangering joe bidens chances in the mitigations biggest swing state. How concerned are you, joel . Well, look, florida is a battleground state and one of the closest ones. Its a big pot of electoral votes, 29. Donald trump eked out a win last time with a onepoint margin there. Its obviously an important state for both campaigns. It is more critical for trump than it is for biden. You know, even if trump keeps florida, but biden takes back those upper midwestern states, where hes leading by a few points now, pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin, and replicates the 2016 map, joe biden is the next president of the United States. That being said, look, people on the ground are closest to where the voters are. Theyre critically important in advising the campaign. Its also not uncommon to hear from some states saying we need more help. And obviously, in florida, if there are resources, democrats should be cranking it up now, because if we take that off the map from donald trump, he has almost no path to living. Rick, lets go from florida to texas. The latest nbc news marist poll, it shows biden ahead of the president , 5147 in florida. That poll has a margin of error of 4. 4 . So theres florida. In texas, early votes there, early votes in the Lone Star State now surpass the 2016 vote total. Harris county, it includes houston, as you know, rick tyler, already passing a total votes cast in the county in 2016. How do you read those numbers . It does feel like every two years, we talk about the shifting demographics in texas and flipping texas blue. Is this really the year that its feasible . Well, craig, texas has been going blue for a long, long time. Remember, mitt romney won it by almost 16. Donald trump won it by 9. Beto orourke almost beat ted cruz. He was at 2. 6, so you can see from 16 to 9 to 2. 6, does it go to zero . Even better this year . Yes, its possible. But i wouldnt get your hopes up. And as joe mentioned, when you do have money, you can extend the map. But a lot of people are going to secondguess the Biden Campaign, and while they are expanding the map, i think they know full well that the best and most conventional way for them to win this race runs through the upper midwest and states that joel mentioned, wisconsin, michigan, and pennsylvania. Especially pennsylvania. Its all about pennsylvania. If you block trump in pennsylvania, he really does not have a path to win without winning the other two more difficult states for him, wisconsin and michigan. So i would like to see the Biden Campaign stay focused on pennsylvania, yes, give resources to texas, give resources, because they have them, but the candidate should be 100 focused in my view on pennsylvania. Thats how hes going to be president. That would probably also explain why mr. Biden and senator harris and their two spouses are going to be barnstorming the state the day before the election. Pennsylvania, pennsylvania, pennsylvania. Joel, do you share that assessment . Is that where the Biden Campaign should be focusing all of its attention over the next few days. Wisconsin, pennsylvania, michigan . Well, Mission Number one is to get to 270 electoral votes. Rick and i agree on this. Thats what you have to do first, but that doesnt mean if you have the resources, you dont ignore some other states, where you want to make your opponent play defense and spend resources where they might not otherwise. Arizona, for example, is a state thats tighter than i would have expected at the beginning of this particular election campaign. Theres a senate race there, where theyre probably going to get a Democratic Senate seat with mark kelly, whos been leading Martha Mcsally most of the way through. Thats a state we could see shift in this election with attention and resources. On the other hand, i would also and rick probably knows this as well as i do, democrats picked up suburban seats in congress in the 2018 campaign. The suburbs in texas around houston, around harris county, in harris county, around dallas, have really been shifting. And the biggest problem in the electorate that donald trump has, and ive been watching this a lot in fox news polls, which i think are also very good polls, just to be clear about the statement, but donald trump won suburban voters in 2016 by 4 points. They make up half the electorate in america. He is now about 18 points behind with suburban voters. Zpst not just women, its women and men. And of course they compounded his problem with suburban swemw women. So i think the one thing i would say about texas is, you know, weve seen a lot of incumbent republicans in plus nine, plus ten districts, a handful of them not run for reelection. And rick probably knows as well as i do when youre in a plus nine district in favor of your party, you dont quit unless you think the tide is turning. Rick, before i let you guys go, i want to get your take on this new interview in politico magazine, with one of the two pollsters who oversaw the infamous usc l. A. Times poll that accurately showed trump winning. He warns, quote. Theres a lot of hidden trump votes out there. Will biden win the popular vote . Probably. Im not even debating that, but i think trump is likely to have an Electoral College victory. Your thoughts, rick tyler . Well, craig, look. I do think there are a lot of trump voters who dont admit to being trump voters. And worst that was leveled at donald trump in the 2016 campaign is that he was a deplorable. People are reluctant to show their support for trump for being called worse things and not get along with their neighbor. And remember, there are a lot of obama voters who voted for donald trump and the Biden Campaign to win that back. But lets say theyre right, that there are all of these hidden voters. Joe biden the polls would have to be wrong by at least six points in each of the battleground states in michigan, pennsylvania, and wisconsin in order for donald trump to be president. They have to be wrong by six points. Are polls wrong, sure . Do they capture a moment in time, but i think for them to be six points wrong, i dont believe that thats going to happen. Craig, can i get in on this quickly . I know youve got to jump. Really quickly, go ahead. Folks have been saying this over and over again, but lets be clear. They had donald trump winning florida in the last election by four points. They were overstating his support by three. Theyre off five points in favor of trump. They got the winner of the election right, but he didnt get the popular vote, he lost it. So i think youve got to keep in mind, you can be wrong in two directions in your polling, and we should stop touting them as the gurus who got everything right, when they were off with a tilt towards trump for some reason. I dont know why, but they were. Thats the fact from 2016. Excellent point. Solid advice about polls from a pollster. Joel benenson, thank you. Rick tyler, big thanks to both of you, as well. Try to get some sleep this weekend. We aired the wrong tape a few minutes ago at the beginning of the segment. I said that it was a voter from florida. It was, in fact, a voter from michigan. I do want to make sure we cleared that up. Be sure to watch our Election Night coverage on tuesday starts at 4 00 p. M. Eastern. Nicole wallace followed by chris hayes at 5 00 and at 6 00 eastern, Steve Kornacki will be at that big board to break down the data. Brian williams, rachel maddow, joy reid and Nicole Wallace will try to make sense of it, as well, into the night. Likely into the Early Morning hours as well. That, of course, tuesday, only on msnbc. The confluence of two things that make this moment in the nation incredibly unique. A Record Number of people voting early and a Record Number of people dealing with coronavirus. Ill dig into that with president ial historian jon meacham. Well also head to another state where early voting will wrap up today. Arizona and nbcs Vaughn Hillyard is there. Day. Arizona and nbcs Vaughn Hillyard is there. Craig, this is the first time that National Money has been spent like this here on the streets of phoenix, but this is years in the making. And its in large part because of the organizers that have been fighting this fight for years. Well take you to these phoenix streets, next. Well take you to these phoenix streets, next. Im still on the road to whats next. And im still going for my best. Even though i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib not caused by a heart valve problem. So if theres a better treatment than warfarin, im on top of that. Eliquis. Eliquis is proven to reduce stroke risk better than warfarin. Plus has significantly less major bleeding than warfarin. Eliquis is fdaapproved and has both. Whats next . Getting out there. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. That is up 71 from this point four years ago. Vaughn hillyard is in phoenix, talking with organizers there, as part of our countytocounty coverage, and vaughn, what are you hearing from folks on the ground there in this final push . Yeah, craig, weve got to take into context here. Any of these states that have had National Attention for years, for decades, instead, arizona, the folks on the ground, on the democratic side have been doing this from scratch. Year after year after year to lead up to this moment. You know, i met up yesterday on the streets with meaz, a coalition of several latino organizations yesterday. They have more than 300 folks that have been knocking on doors since june, back when the temperatures were 115 degrees. They have been going and knocking on those doors to get folks to turn in early votes. Not only register, but turn in their early ballots. I joined them on the streets yesterday and i was talking with maria hernandez, one of those organizers here locally. She was 19 years old, craig, when she first got involved in politics. She grew up right here in the heart of phoenix and got involved at the age of 19 back in 2012, an effort to get rid of the longtime sheriff here in town. Ultimately in 2016, they were able to help do just that. He lost by 11 percentage points. But now, he says, theres National Implications in the folks that shes talking to are realizing that. Take a listen to part of our conversation. Im proud to be from arizona. Im proud to have grown up here. Im proud of people that look like me, that decided to stand up and fight back and take back our state. Its going to be people like me, people like maryland, women of color, that are going to make sure that we deliver the state on november 3rd and therefore change the country. Craig, thats maria hernandez. And i think its important over these next five days that we look at this even through a 60year lens. It started with the farm Workers Rights Movement here. It started with a lot of protests against antiimmigration legislation here locally, or fighting for protections for dreamers here. But now, suddenly, adds you heard maria say, they realize that theres National Stake here is and they have every intention of playing a major significant part in that here, craig. Vaughn hillyard on the ground in phoenix, arizona, for us this morning. Vaughn, thank you, sir. Thanks, as always. We are seeing two things happen in communities all over our country. At nothing. They are possibly the two biggest factors that could have a decisive impact on the result of the 2020 election. The accelerating speed of coronavirus in this country with more than 9 million cases now. And the unprecedented pace of early voting. More than 82 million votes have already been cast, closer to 83 million, actually. Lets turn to president ial historian jon meacham, an msnbc contributor. Mr. Meacham, how do these factors make this election in particular unique in our countrys history . Well, its going to be an amazing week or so. It already has been an amazing three weeks or so of early voting. Somewhere in the kingdom of heaven, john lewis is smiling. This is what he fought for. This is what america was in many ways founded to do, is to have ballots, to have the suffrage, to enable our voices to be heard. The two things youve been talking about, the covid cases and the remarkable tsunami of democracy thats unfolding, i think are related. My view is that absent covid, this is a much closerfought, much more, obviously, traditional campaign. And one of the things you have to ask yourself is, president ial politics in many ways, a reelection question, is, do you want to hire this person for another four years. This is an old bill clinton trope. And looking around, leaving aside your preexisting partisan concerns or disposition, on a purely factual level, is this the president you want in charge of your affairs, given the way the pandemic has unfolded. And we wont know for a while, we probably wont know tuesday night. We need to get ready for that. It is not illegitimate for a mailin ballot to be counted after election day. Folks need to get that in their minds and get comfortable with it. But is this the person, is this the evidence of your eyes and ears, that leads you to say i want this person to be in charge of things for another four years. Jon, there are some concerns that President Trump may not accept the results of the election on tuesday should he lose, or beyond tuesday. There also have been some concerns expressed about violence at polling places on election day, as youve written about, this country has gone through some turbulent elections over the last 220 plus years. 1968 saw violence across american cities, in a year of assassinations, unrest, law and order the central message of Richard Nixons campaign. Was there violence at the polls that year . Why would we expect violence in 2020 . You know, i dont think so. I would have to do a deeper dive. O offhand i have no recollection of electionrelated violence. The violence that was so ambient 52 years ago was related more to antiwar movements, to civil rights, to the issues of social justice that we see, and the assassinations of Martin Luther king and robert kennedy. The violence of the Chicago Democratic National convention. And the chaos of that year, this is a very interesting analogy, depending on what happens next week, to look at. The chaos of that year resulted in Richard Nixon narrowly defeating hubert humphrey, the incumbent Vice President , by about 41 percenta , a single pe point. But George Wallace won 13. 5 of the popular vote and carried five states in the Electoral College. So you had roughly 55 of the country in november of 1968 wanting to have a conservative reaction to the reality they were saying. There is almost no evidence that that is the reaction were seeing at the polls. Quite the opposite. And i think there are a couple of reasons for that. One is, people are, i think, tired of this exhausting reality show that weve been living in. The president has risen to power and governed with the notion that he has to control our mind share, right . He has to be the center of attention at all points. And that can be exhausting. As a clinical matter, people would push fdr to give more frequent radio addresses and he would say, no, i need to keep my powder dry. The president doesnt keep that powder dry. Jon meacham, well have to leave it there. Well have more time next week. Thank you, my friend, always appreciate having you, enjoy your weekend you. And enjoy your weekend as well. Thats going to do it for me. Andrea mitchell reports is next. Next but not every tomato ends in the same kind of heinz ketchup.
