Battleground state. Today, a live look at the scene in allentown. We will keep an eye and an ear on that event for any news that might be made. With polls showing a tight race in a series of key battlegrounds, every vote counts. This morning, maryland, early inperson voting just getting started. What you see is a line from Silver Spring early this morning. Voters waiting in line to cast their ballots, even before the sun came up. And that is in spite of this pandemic, which is not just disappeared, as promised. In fact, we have now lost more than 226,000 americans to this virus. We have now recorded more new cases over the past week than at any other point during the pandemic. Lets get right to our reporters. Carol lee is in pennsylvania at the president s next stop. Mike memoli is covering the Biden Campaign. Steve kornacki is standing by the big board for us. Carol, lets start with you in pennsylvania. President trumps rally in allentown, the first of three for him in pennsylvania today. How key is that state to the trump strategy right now . Reporter pennsylvania is critical to the trump strategy, craig. Its a state that has 20 electoral votes. The president is in a tough fight for the state of pennsylvania. He obviously won it in 2016. It was one of those states that went for President Trump that really helped hand him the election in 2016, so the Trump Campaign is hoping to have a doovd doover and have the same thing happen in 2020. The president just arrived in allen town, telling reporters he believes he is up in pennsylvania. The polls are tight, and most show biden leading slightly, within the margin of error. The president is determined to try to win the state of pennsylvania, so hes stopping in allentown. Then to lidetts and martinsburg. That is the schedule the president will be keeping from now to election day. Multiple rallies a day, really getting out there and trying to energize his base, get voters to turn out, and if not voting now, where there is early voting, to really get to the polls on election day. Well see him going to arizona tomorrow, to michigan, even to nebraska, where the trump and Biden Campaign are trying for electoral votes. T people are thinking itll be close. This is likely not the last well see of him, and certainly not the last well see of a number of his surrogates on his campaign, craig. Carol lee, standby. Lets turn to mike memoli. Biden and president obama and surrogates out in full force this weekend. Biden off the trail. Any idea what he is doing, and what is the thinking in the campaign about where to devote its energies over the next seven or eight days . Reporte reporter weve been talking about this, how different the candidates are, style, substance, and how theyre campaigning. Carol at one of several rallies the president is doing today. The Biden Campaign likes to refer to those as superspreader events the president is doing. He is campaigning often against the guidelines of the cdc and health experts. Biden, at this point, we have no indication of whether well see him in public today. The campaign isnt ruling it out, but we know he isnt traveling to a battleground state. Its a little over two months since the Democratic National convention. 66 days, in fact. Biden spent only half of those out on the campaign trail with public events. The we do see biden today, itll be a retail stop with some sort of message. We do know that he has some campaign travels scheduled this week. He was in pennsylvania where the president is today on saturday, trying to win back a lot of those obama trump voters. Tomorrow, hell be in what is billed as a Closing Argument type speech in a state that democrats havent won in a president ial election since 1992. An example of how the campaign is also going on offense. Hell be in florida, as well. Well expect him to be in michigan, pennsylvania again, i wouldnt be surprised, ohio, where he has been campaigning a lot, trying to win those states back. Were also seeing the Campaign Surrogates in full force. President obama is on the trail again tomorrow in florida. Jill biden warming the ground in georgia for him today. So this is a campaign that is arguing not to be complacent, even as theyre keeping sort of a responsible way of campaigning, doing so in a safe and socially distant way, craig. Mr. Kornacki, give us the view from 30,000 feet. The reliable polls that come out were talking about. How are those polls influencing the calculus for both these campaigns right now, steve . Yeah. You can really see the connection, craig. First, well show the 30,000 foot view, the national polling. This is the polling average basically updated again with more coming in today. Eight points, bidens lead over trump right now. Eight points. To give you perspective, this same distance from the election in 2016, eight days out, you see that, Hillary Clintons average lead was down to just over three. So this is different. Weve been saying biden has led by larger margins than Hillary Clinton did in 2016. Its in this final week of the campaign. Youre certainly seeing that now. This really did, the polling average in 2016, the average of polls ended up at about clinton by three. She won the popular vote by two, and that was just close enough that trump was able to find that path through the electoral college. So lets see if this moves this number eight in the final week. Trump probably needs that to tick down a bit. We can look at the electoral college. Heres one way of looking at it. Every state that you see is gray here, its a state donald trump won in 2016, and where, to some degree, his campaign is sweating right now. Theyre either trailing in the polls or barely ahead in the polls. He doesnt have to win every single one of these states, but he has to win the lions share. One way to look at this, take them in categories here. Take texas, iowa, ohio, and georgia. Four states he won by fairly solid margins, all Single Digits. It was close to ten in iowa. Close to ten in ohio. Texas. Georgia was five points. He needs a way to shore up those states, and he is vulnerable in them to varying degrees. If he does that, trump goes four for four in those states, thatd put him over 200. Then the next time hes got to go, hes got to get florida. Thatd get him to 232. Then the next state where hes going to be, pennsylvania. If he can get florida and pennsylvania, those two, on top of the others i showed you, 252, there would be possible paths here. Itd involve north carolina. Itd involve arizona, maybe wisconsin, michigan sort of an outside shot there for him. Thered be paths. If he loses, for instance, a pennsylvania, though, if biden gets that, boy, that starts to get really tough for trump. Biden is at 252. If biden just got michigan and wisconsin, that would put him over the top there. If he misses on wisconsin, if trump got that, but biden got arizona, it opens up all sorts of paths here for biden. Getting a pennsylvania. Certainly, if biden were to get florida. Trump has to shore up the states he won by high Single Digits in 2016. He is in particular peril, i think, in the polling in georgia. Hes got to get florida, and hes got to get, it looks like, pennsylvania. That would open up a path for him. By itself, it wouldnt win it for him. It would open up a path for him. I think, basically, when you look at the electoral map, you see a bunch of states that loom as pretty much mustwin for trump. Hes got to string a bunch of those together to get to 270 again. Whats the reliable state polling in pennsylvania showing us so far, steve . Yeah, and thats the thing. The average here well reset this. The average in wisconsin, michigan, and pennsylvania, of all these different battleground states im showing you, the average is the biggest here in terms of a biden lead in these three states. 5. 5 points, the polling average in pennsylvania. Mississip wisconsin and michigan, its a tick larger. The gap is larger than anything he is facing in the other states. If trump goes o for three, biden is likely to be over 270. If trump goes o for three here, unlikely he is going to be reelected president. He has to find a way to win one of these three. Steve kornacki, we are going to be spending a lot of time with you over the next eight days. Thank you, sir. Thanks to your trusty big board, as well. Carol lee in pennsylvania, thank you. Mr. Memoli, thanks, as always. The final days of this election playing out as the country is shattering records for new coronavirus cases. Here are the latest facts this morning. Another 60,000 new cases have been added in the last 24 hours. Thats after 87,000 were recorded in a single day over the weekend. It was the fourth day in a row where daily new cases hit pabov 80,000. El paso, texas, the citys Convention Center is being turned into a field hospital. The city is also imposing a curfew from 10 00 p. M. Until 5 00 a. M. To help slow the spread. In utah, the governor there sounding the alarm. Hospitals in utah are overrun. Many icus are at capacity. However, this morning, there is some glimmer of hope on the vaccine front. British pharmaceutical giant astrazeneca says its potential vaccine has triggered immune responses among both older and younger adults. Lets take all of that to dr. A dara cass, a yahoo news medical contributor, doctor in the emergency room, and also part of the Group Doctors for biden, as well. I want to start with another outbreak tied to the white house. At least five of Vice President mike pences aides tested positive. The pences, both of them, Vice President pence and his wife, they tested negative this morning. How troubling is this, to see it play out again . So its really troubling, not just for the pences but the country writ large. Its their behavior theyre modeling, that shows people when theyre exposed what to do. It is harder for us on the front line to convince people who are exposed to stay home from work. Especially when theyre not getting paid or when it is inconvenient. Because they see the Vice President and everyone in his circle wait until theyre positive to actually start their quarantine. We know the period of time its most dangerous for the spread of this virus is from exposure to positive symptom or positive test. The Vice President and the administration is not interested in containing that period of time, which is why we see exponential spread everywhere. Were seeing some mixed messaging from this white house, dr. Ka doctor. I want to play what we heard from chief of staff mark meadows on sunday. Then President Trump and his Senior Adviser and soninlaw, jared kushner, from a few hours ago. Were not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics, and other mitigation why arent we going to because it is a contagious virus. Just like the flu. We definitely have challenges, but President Trumps approach is were going to defeat the virus and were going to get our country back to a stronger place than ever before. Which one is it, doctor . Honestly, its neither. Its absurd. It is ridiculous to say were going to give up. Prevention is the best way to keep people healthy and safe. We dont have a vaccine. We dont have reliable therapeutics, and we dont have a cure. Weve seen all over the world, in new zealand, australia, theyve been able to work hard to contain this virus without a vaccine and therapeutic. Here in new york, weve been able to contain our positive test rates at an average of less than 1 with Public Health measures and Community Involvement alone. This assertion, and, again, weve heard this over the past few days from some folks, that were seeing an increase in the number of cases because we are, in fact, testing more. What say you to that . So if our positive test rate was 1 or 3 in the country, i might start to believe that, but its not. We have the positive test rate of 20 . Meaning for every 100 people tested, 20 are positive. Or one in five. We are undertesting in our hot spot states, so, no, its not more testing equals more cases. Its more spread equals more cases. Dr. Dara ca a kass, apprecia your insight. Folks, check this out. Volunteers handing out pizza to people who are waiting to vote in yonkers, new york. Its part of a group called pizza to the polls. The new cbs poll finds many black voters are worried about their ballots being counted correctly. Were going to dig into that with one of president obamas pollsters in a moment. Also, the nba may be making its most important play yet. Erin mclaughlin is at the Staples Center with a very special guest. Reporter thats right, craig. Im here, outside the home of the nba champs, the la lakers, now one of the largest voting sites in the country. Part of the nbas fullcourt press to get out the vote. Ill have a special guest joining me after the break to talk about that and more. [ engine rumbling ] [ beeping ] [ engine revs ] uh, you know theres a 30minute limit, right . Tell that to the rain. [ beeping ] for those who were born to ride, theres progressive. She always wanted her smile to shine. Now, she uses a capful of therabreath healthy smile oral rinse to give her the healthy, sparkly smile she always wanted. crowd cheering therabreath, its a better mouthwash. At walmart, target and other fine stores. More than 55 million americans and climbing have already voted. And right now, we are seeing people spur on their fellow americans to get out and vote. For the compton cowboys in california, a group focused on inner city issues, that means addling up and riding to drop off their mailin ballots to encourage voting. And the nba, the nba is rolling out the fullcourt press to expand voting access. Turning 20 stadiums or arenas across this country into polling places. That now includes some of the worlds biggest arenas in new york city and los angeles. Nbcs Erin Mclaughlin is live outside the Staples Center, one of the arenas. Shes there in la. How is the nba opening up the doors to voters there . Reporter hey, craig. Well, as you say, this is a fullcourt press. Doors open in a couple hours here at the Staples Center. It actually opened saturday along with the forum across town, which was opened with the help of the clippers as well as dodger stadium. 3 of 20 sites across the country designed to help people get out to vote, making easy and acce accessible sites in the face of a pandemic. Joining me now to talk about this fullcourt press is nba champ, twotime nba allstar, caron butler. Can you talk to me about your involvement . Youve been working with lebron james on this effort. My major thing was, when you think about all of us, individually, in our respective states, we have these massive platforms. Were subjective to being called heros in these places because weve done things that inspired and touched people. We really wanted to move the needle on social change. Most importantly, people to get out there and exercise their right to vote. We all been doing that individually for quite some time. We got the headlines. We got the stories, but as collectives, we wanted to finally come together and do something a little more moving, a little more powerful. You know, the more than the Vote Campaign was just that. Across the country, youre talking about hundreds of millions of followers thats all engaged in the movement. Were giving them proper data, where they know where to go, what to have, the proper identification. You have utility, the polling places, where to you go . We have the whole process. Walking people through it. On social media, you see the interaction, wanting to know more about why is it important for us to get out here and vote . Were educating them on the fly. Reporter and this is part of that historic agreement between the nba and basketball players over the summer after the players walked off the court. Why was this so important to them . Well, i think about the boycott with the milwaukee bucks. I had the luxury of going to the correctional facility with the bucks earlier that season. Fast forward to the boycott. They were impacted by all the isms that exist in society. They took it upon themselves to use their platform to do something really just powerful. I think that everybody had to really stop again and say, wow, this is an issue. Sports and politics and all these things, you know, just collided at that moment. It showed the power and the impact of players. If we unify and come together, we really can move the needle on real change. Now, everyone is engaged. George hill was out in milwaukee riding around in caravans, leading that community in the right direction. I just love what im seeing out of our young guys being engaged. I was 19, 20 years, i wasnt engaged in politics, nor did i care about those things. But now, people are saying theyre taking it upon themselves to say, you know what, i have to be educated. I have to be informed. Most importantly, i have to know what my specific call to action is going forward. Caron butler, thank you so much. Craig, back to you. All right. Erin mclaughlin there and caron butler. We didnt have time to get into the likelihood of a repeat, but well save that for our next conversation. A big thanks to both of you. Good to see caron. I want to bring in from caron butler to cornell belcher. Msnbc political analyst and also a pollster on both of president obamas campaigns. So lets start with this poll, mr. Belcher. Cbs news and b. E. T. , theyve got a new poll out. It shows that black voters say that were more motivated to vote but are concerned about the vote counting. You see the demographic breakdown. Less than 50 of black voters between the ages of 18 and 64 are confident their vote is going to be counted correctly. Just 53 of black voters 65 and up are confident their vote will be counted correctly. To what do you attribute those numbers . Voter suppression and the efforts youve seen to make it seem like the system is flawed and that, quite frankly, the vote wont count. If you keep telling people the system is flawed, that the system is broken, as trump has said time and time again, it is going to have an impact. I have to tell you, in focus groups going, you know, over the last couple months, ive heard this a lot from young people. This idea that, does your vote count . Questioning the process. So getting in the way of voters in this space is another way of suppressing the vote. What is the point of standing and voting if my vote isnt going to be count . It is a form of voter suppression, but to all the young people, your vote will be counted. The system is going to work. We also need you to get out and vote early if possible. If not, on election day, have a plan. While were having this conversation, we should let folks know the president has staken t taken the stage there in allentown, pennsylvania. His first of three rallies today. Were listening closely. If the president makes any news, well go back to it. So far, what he said is hes going to win next week. He is going to win pennsylvania and four more years. Cornell, back to our conversation here. You mentioned the lines of voters, and weve seen this visual over the last few days especially. Black voters waiting in long lines to cast their ballots. In some cases, hours. What do campaigns need to be doing right now to make sure that these images dont turn voters off . These images dont keep potential voters from showing up and casting their ballots. Well, you know, the good news is that campaigns have been preparing for this. A lot of the messaging coming out of the campaigns started with michelle obama. Have a plan. Be prepared. So you have to have a plan for voting. I think the messaging is working. Be prepared for long lines, but also, craig, this is important, because we have also, on the democratic side, weve used republicans attempt to make voting harder for people of color as, in fact, messaging for mobilization and motivation. I mean, i have to tell you, a lot of my clients have used the idea that republicans are potentially trying to make it harder for you to vote as a motivator for, in fact, getting more people out to the polls. Again, if your vote doesnt count, if your vote doesnt count, why are they making it so hard for you . Realize your power. So i think the campaigns have done a fairly good job right now. I think its why you see people standing in line. You can see volunteers handing out pizza. You see people showing up at polling places with lawn chairs. People have a plan. I think we prepared them to have a plan, to wait in line and not have their vote denied. One of the things that continues to strike me, and you can see it in some pictures, you have folks who are waiting in line for three, four, five hours in the middle of a pandemic. Lets go to florida for a second, cornell, because there is an increasing focus on miamidade right now. The Biden Campaign sent president obama there this weekend. The miami harald has new reporting about how the Trump Campaign and allies used big data to target plaqblack voters specifically in miamidade in 2016. Harald says folks there became part of a nationwide experiment. Quote, a computer algorithm that analyzed huge sums of voters personal data, things theyd said and done on facebook, credit card purchases, charities they supported, even personality traits, decided they could be manipulated into not voting. They probably wouldnt even know it was happening. Is this something thats likely happening right now again . Yes. Without question. Lets be clear, the russian involvement and interference last round, it did have an impact on the election. We cant pretend it doesnt. I see it in the data. When you look at the younger people of color, and we know from the reporting on this network, they were intentionally focusing on people of color, africanamericans. When you look at africanamericans who wouldnt vote for trump but broke thirdparty, that was their intention. I heard it in focus groups across the country, i hear young africanamericans who voted for obama but werent certain about voting thirdparty, talking about super predator. Craig, these were people who were in their early 20s. Where are they getting the information about super spread tor predator, about Hillary Clinton . I heard it in ohio, pennsylvania, florida. It was not by accident. They were manipulating it, and theyre trying to manipulate it right now. Cornell belcher, well be spending a lot of time with you over the next seven or eight days, as well. Thank you, as always, sir. Well stay in florida here because there is a new group of swing voters there in the sunshine state. Senior citizens. How they can sway this election. Ill talk to the states top democrat. First though, take a look at this. This is a 104yearold woman. Her name is ruth. She cast her ballot this weekend in new york city. She was born before women had the right to vote. She says this election is the most important shes ever seen. This is, hands down, without exception, and im talking about the first world war, the second world war, and every other election before this, this is it. Thank you. Bradley, get a freshly made subway footlong instead. Try my favorite, turkey. Order on the app. Anything for my fans. Try the new subway buffalo chicken or bbq chicken. But some things are too serious to be ignored. If you still have symptoms of Crohns Disease or Ulcerative Colitis even after trying other medications, it may be a sign of damaging inflammation, which left untreated, could get much worse. Please make an appointment to see your gastroenterologist right away. Or connect with them online. Once you do, seeing the doctor is one less thing to worry about. Need help finding a doctor . Head to crohnsandcolitis. Com this morning, 5. 6 Million People already voted in florida. In this closely watched, swingiest of swing state, it seems a new voting group emerged, seniors. Thats especially true in the villages, where voters there once firmly on the republican side may not be as much this time around. Nbcs Kerry Sanders joins me from Palm Beach Gardens in the sunshine state. He caught up with some of those voters. Kerry, whats they tell ya . Reporter well, craig, very surprising, because you have to remember in the villages, its two republicans for every democrat. This is a decidedly republican area. On top of that, this is the most active group of voters that exists. One in four folks over the age of 65 actually vote. To actually see what was taking place in the villages, well, thats a big surprise. You can see the flags coming behind me. Thats what you typically see in the villages. People supporting trump. Very commonly, we see them on their golf carts. Take a look at this video here. Not only do we see a parade on the golf carts for President Trump, but and this is rare were seeing a parade really publicly here for joe biden. And the republican we have not seen that in the past is theres been sort of a punishment for those who spoke out against donald trump. Social isolation is a big one, especially on the golf courses. We caught up with some of those voters, registered republicans, lifelong republicans, independents, all who voted for donald trump in the last election. This is what they had to tell us about this election. Show of hands, who voted for trump in the last election . Who is voting for trump in the upcoming election . Nobody. Why . Simply on our democracy. I cannot folk for a man who is the great divider rather than the great unifier. His whole platform is divide and conquer. I gave him a chance, and i feel that we need somebody else. Reporter in sump teravainte 62 of the residents there already voted. In all likelihood, well probably see the highest turnout in florida, in sumpter county. There is a general sense of obligation and Civic Responsibility to vote, and theyll be voting, craig, in this election for sure. All right. Kerry sanders there. Palm beach gardens, florida. Thank you. I want to turn now to nikki freed, floridas commissioner of agriculture and consumer services. She is the top democrat there in the state of florida. Good to have you back, nikki. Thanks for your time this morning. Based on what youre seeing on the ground there in florida, do you think there will be more of these socalled senior swing voters that typically vote republican but turn out for joe biden this time around . Absolutely. And i think kerry hit it on the head. A lot of them gave trump a fighting chance in 2016. They have seen what he has done in the last four years, dividing our country. Especially during covid times, po both he as well as Governor Desantis basically said covid is behind us and were ready to go back to normal. Yet these individuals havent seen their children, grandchildren, and having to deal with covid every single day of their lives, and dont have leadership that is taking their health and safety as a priority. Not only are they voting for their own personal safety and health but for their grandchildren. I have a 90yearold grandmother in south florida. She lived through world war ii, through the great depression, and shes never seen a president so angry and so meanspirited and full of hate than she has with donald trump. So shes voting to make sure weve got a democracy and a country not necessarily for me but my niece and nephew, her grandchildr grandchildren. You mentioned the virus. There is this headline from the seminole that sums up where things are in your state right now when it comes to the pandemic. Heres the headline. Florida is on the verge of a covid19 resurgence. More than 2,000 new cases reported in just the last 24 hours. Do you get the sense there that folks in your state are getting it. You know, whats happening here in the state of florida is our governor opened up the state. Said life is going back to normal. Business as usual. As even stopped messaging on covid. If you look at our department of health website, there is no messaging, no information about covid. Instead of, you know, really trying to emphasize wearing a mask, social distancing, our governor has gone to all these rallies with the president , encouraged our football stadiums to be packed to capacity. You even see parts of our state where you wouldnt realize a pandemic is happening. Panhandle and other parts throughout central florida. Unfortunately, because of the leadership in donald trump and Governor Desantis, we are seeing people stopping to wear masks, feeling the pandemic is behind them. I feel like deja vu from may, when the governor said mission accomplished. We became the epicenter for our country and the entire world. I am fearful we are on the verge of being at the center once again. 5. 6 million ballots cast so far. Its still very early, but politico is reporting, quote, after weeks of democrats out voting by mail, Republican Voters stormed early voting precincts in person last week, taking large bites out of their opponents historic lead in preelection day ballots. How concerned are you about that . Let me be clear, the democrats will have a tremendous vote advantage. Were seeing historic turnout through early voting with the vote by mail. In fact, im inspired by our youth. In 2016, only 44,000 of our youth voted by mail and voted early. Were up to close to 60,000 in the state of florida. Were knowing our elections are close in the state, so we are going to workday in and day out to get a addy sidivisive victor joe biden. Republican ballot doesnt mean theyre voting for trump. About every three out of four Republican Voters aive spoken o are voting for joe biden. Just because the numbers are getting closer, we still have a very large vote gain here in the state, and i imagine that will continue to increase as we get into the election day. Nikki fried, fresh off the Campaign Appearance with president obama over the weekend. Nikki, thank you so much. Always enjoy having you. This time tomorrow morning, judge barrett expected to officially be seated on the bench. Nbcs Garrett Haake has been following this story closely on the hill from the very beginning. Whats the latest on the vote and the timine ining and how se are voting, sir . Reporter craig, the clock runs out in the 7 00 p. M. Hour tonight, after this last 30 hours of debate. It appears that republicans will have all the votes they need to turn judge barrett into justice barrett. Over the weekend, they gained back a lost member of the flock, if you will. Republican senator Lisa Murkowski of alaska, who has been saying shes opposed to this process, ultimately came out and said that, while she doesnt agree with the way its handled, shes not going to hold that against the nominee. She will vote to confirm judge barrett. That means the only republican who will vote against her confirmation is Susan Collins of maine. Shell join the democrats in opposition. Its not enough to stop this vote, which, if judge barrett is confirmed on a purely party line vote, would make it the most partisan confirmation vote in the courts history, craig. Thats saying something. Garrett haake for us on the hill, going to be a long day and night for you, sir. Thank you. Two rallies, one location, and members of both groups were armed.
