Display. In fact, heres just one example of how each of them talked about simply wearing a mask in this pandemic. As far as the mask is concerned im good with masks. Im okay with masks, i tell people to wear the masks but they came out with a study that shows 85 of the people who wear a mask catch it. They didnt say it. I know that study. Thats what i heard. Thats what i saw. The words of the president matter. Absolutely. No matter whether theyre good, bad or indifferent, they matter. When a president doesnt wear a mask or makes fun of folks like me when i was wearing a mask for a long time, you know, then people say it mustnt that important. Lets go to the campaign trail. Mike memoli is in detroit, michigan, and Josh Lederman is in ocala, florida, where the president will be this afternoon. Mr. Memoli, what is the Biden Campaign saying about his town Hall Performance on thursday night and whats the message that hes tailoring to voters in michigan today . Reporter well, craig, the biden team would have preferred for last nights town hall debate to have gone forward, but they had the solo town hall and they would have preferred it not to be competing against trump at the same time. But the word of the day and the campaign has been contrast. Any viewers who were watching side by side with the split screen, maybe dvrd, they came across with a contrast that works in bidens favor. He enjoys interacting with the voters and he talked about the crime bill, for instance, expressing regret about some elements of it that led to the mass incarceration. He talked about the Supreme Court fight giving us a little bit more insight into what he peoples about the socalled court packing, expanding the Supreme Court and hell give us a position on that before the election. We got a lot on health care, and thats what biden advisers tell me is the message of the days, as he comes to michigan. One of the blue wall states that he wants to drill down on. Hes going to be joining for a drivein rally as well see behind me later today and thats the closing message really, it will continue to be on health care and all of that having to do with the coronavirus where they continue to attack the president for his handling of that, craig. A drivein rally in detroit. Josh, let me turn to you. The president is making a swing into florida and georgia after his town hall. Hows the Trump Campaign feeling about how it went, what can we expect to hear from him today . Reporter hey, craig, well, the president doesnt arrive here for another five hours or so now but the crowd here actually started arriving last night to get in line for the rally today. Ill step out of frame for a second so you can see just how far down the road the crowd already extends. You can see its kind of a party tailgating feel. Some folks are bringing coolers with some beverages to keep them refreshed while they wait for the president to arrive. The Trump Campaign, meanwhile, they feel good about the president S Performance last night. They feel like he got some tough questions and he managed to get through the evening without any major mistakes. He finally gave the answer on White Supremacy that his advisers have long trying to get him to give, a simple denunciation of White Supremacy, but the president has a lot of work to do in places like central florida. Particularly when it comes to seniors. Hes really been hemorrhaging support among Senior Citizens in places that helped him to rack up significant margins over Hillary Clinton and his mission is to try to show hes a competent leader in responding to the coronavirus pandemic. A really critical concern for Senior Citizens as we continue to see the cases increasing and the number of deaths just in florida approaching 16,000. Craig . Cases increasing but yet behind you in that long line in ocala, i dont see a lot of masks. I do not see a great deal of social distancing. Not a question, josh. Just an observation. Mr. Leaderman, thank you, sir. Mike memoli there in detroit, thank you as well. It is of course the voters that we heard from in the town halls that have quite a bit to think about. Did they hear anything that changed their minds . Nbcs allison barber, she caught up with some of those voters who asked President Trump questions at the town hall there in miami. What did they say, allison . Reporter hey, craig, yeah, its question we often ask voters after debates or town halls, did this help you move closer towards one candidate or move you further away from the other . The answers are rarely the same. And in the pena household the answers couldnt be further apart. Barbara pena plans to support President Trump and her daughter plans to support former Vice President joe biden. Both asked President Trump questions last night about covid19. I think it actually strengthened my vote. The town hall solidified my vote for joe biden because i think in a lot of his answers i saw a lot of, you know, blaming the other side. I think it would have been helpful if he said, wear a mask. He said if you want to wear a mask, wear a mask. Well, thats different. Like glimpse into our home life. Reporter florida is of course a swing state. I know we say that a lot and we say it because we really mean it. This is the biggest, most politically competitive state. There are 29 electoral votes up for grabs here and since 2000, every president ial election in the state of florida has been decided between margins of 1 and 5 . We see both candidates whether it be specifically or their surrogates making their way down here really trying to reach out to voters like the penas and trying to pick up any little vote they possibly can. Craig . Penas, living in a house divided there in miami. Ellison barber for us on the trail, thank you. Lets turn now to rick wilson, republican strategist, cofounder of the lincoln project. I enjoyed seeing your profile on 60 minutes last week. We wont talk more about that, but lets talk about this politico headline. This is how politico puts the town hall. Quote, each candidate played to type, in the end Nothing Happened thats likely to change the race. Ultimately, rick wilson, what would these candidates need to do to change the current trajectory of the race to change the hearts and minds of the very few people who say they are still on the fence . Well, donald trump would have to do the impossible which is to act like a rational, sane candidate with a considered view of his duties as president. I dont think that last night was, you know, Trump Supporters will look at last night as donald trump owning the libs and skeptics and the people in the middle will say theyll contrast the two men, you know, joe biden sitting very calmly, articulating and own a whole spectrum of both his values and he orientation towards big policy questions coming forward. And donald trump doing his usual sort of pick a fight with the media act. I dont think that he covered himself in glory by calling Savannah Guthrie cute and playing little games and trying to do the things he does with many reporters. I dont think it worked out the way it would have for him last im not. I want to ask you about the audio that surfaced a short time ago. This audio of republican senator ben sasse of nebraska. This was some tape that was obtained by the washington examiner. And the senator shares some candid opinions in in telephone town hall with constituents about President Trump and this is just a bit of it. Im not at all apologetic for having fought my values in places where i think his are deficient. Not just for republicans but for an american. So the way he kisses dictators butts im looking at the possibility of a republican bloodbath in the senate. Thats why i have never been on the trump train. Its why i didnt agree to serve on his Reelection Committee and why im not campaigning for him. A spokesperson said he made the comments earlier this week. Theyre not saying it out loud with a megaphone. Why is that . Look, ben sasse sees the future coming at him, look, ben sasse has been telling people with private for many years. Hes known it to be true, hes still exonerated donald trump during the impeachment and has essentially voted along the lines that trumps wants in almost every major case as we have gone forward. So he knows all these faults exist but doesnt bring them forward or have an honest discussion with his constituents until a dedes before an election psyche where will the Republican Senate majority is going to be lost, where trump is in a tremendous political peril and there will be more republican seats lost. Over 600 seats were lost and below that at the state level since donald trump was elected. Ben could have been a stronger leader earlier. He could have said these things more clearly, more publicly and he could have done what only a handful of people have been willing to do which is to speak the truth about President Trump and forget about the tweets. Dont worry about the fox News Coverage of it, but its a day late and a dollar short in a lot of ways and it seems like this has been sort of setting himself up for the 2024 election cycle. We are as you know seeing these long lines of folks early voting in a number of states. I want to get your take on the registration of new voters because according to David Wasserman from the Cook Political Report as of the beginning of october, republicans have registered new voters in florida, pennsylvania and North Carolina, all of course key Battle Ground states. They have registered more than democrats by more than double. How worried should democrats be about that especially in your home state of florida . Well, the one state where that seems to have had a salutatory effect for the Trump Campaign is in North Carolina and that registration effort seems to have had an effect on keeping that race very close. Its a concern, its one of the things that, you know, i jokingly tell my democratic friends that you have to be got wholistically at politics, you cant be good at one or two things you have to do all the things, like Voter Registration and contact and you have to have great candidates with great ideas. Its hard to do it all at one time and they only rarely get, you know, the confluence of all those things. The republican investment in Voter Registration is something they have been talking about doing for a long time and they executed on it. Its a risk factor and one reason why democrats need to make sure their turnout is absolutely through the roof. Now, in all of those states so far, in the early voting and absentee voting with the metrics coming in the democrats have an advantage but it can make election day turnout itself a very problematic thing and make it a much higher thing in the states as we go forward. Rick, before i let you go, lets talk money because this is one area where democrats have exceled especially in the last few months. In september, the Biden Campaign and affiliated committees say they raised an eye popping 383 million and they also have about 432 million cash on hand. Trump campaign, they say they have raised about 250 million. You know ads, you know ad spending better than most. Here we are, 18 days out. Whats the best use of all of that cash for the Biden Campaign right now, whats the best use of that cash for the Trump Campaign . For biden, florida, florida, florida, and a little bit of a map expansion in some other places. I think his i think the race is breaking toward him. He should sustain his levels in michigan, ohio, wisconsin, pennsylvania, maybe slightly expand them. In florida, they should be working puerto rican workers, hispanic voters very hard and looking to turn out the soft republicans in the tampa bay area. Where they have been trending purple and now trending towards blue. And frankly, the Biden Campaign should invest a little bit of the money in texas. Thats state thats starting to slip. No reason that the republican candidate should be only ahead by two or three points and thats the ball game, it will be a very tough day for donald trump. Rick wilson, well leave it there. Enjoy the weekend. I always enjoy your insight. Thank you, back to editing. Yes. Lots of editing there. Rick just mentioned North Carolina, heres the scene there in the tar heel state. We got a big update there from the board of elections there. More than 330,000 folks have cast ballots and thats double what they saw in 2016. Well hear from the people waiting in long lines to make sure that their voices are being heard. First, the new coronavirus warning signs popping up all over the country. States seeing a rise in coronavirus cases. Here are the latest facts on this pandemic. This country has now passed 8 million confirmed cases, it took just three weeks to reach this latest million. And we are rapidly approaching 230,000 lives lost. A Clinical Trial sponsored by the World Health Organization finds that remdesivir has no substantial effect on a patients survival. And the antiviral drug has been used to treat lots of patients including most recently President Trump. Meanwhile, former new Jersey Governor Chris Christie is shedding light on his battle. He spent seven days in the icu and acknowledges he was quote, wrong to not wear a mask at the white house. Christie now urging all americans to take the virus seriously and wear masks. A Michigan Nurse shared a video with msnbc describing what she learned while hospitalized with coronavirus herself. I am incredibly thankful for the medical knowledge and experience that i had working in the icu with the covid population because i knew how to advocate for myself. I felt like at the same time incredibly sad for the people who live in the community they dont have a medical background, they dont know how to advocate for themselves. Those are the patients that we are sending home from primary care physicians and saying, monitor your symptoms and isolate at home. And then ten days later theyre coming in and are incredibly sick because they dont know what to look for. And they dont have the tools to know how to stop the early on set of symptoms that could keep them out of the icu. From michigan to another midwestern state, seeing a dramatic rise in cases iowa. Iowa now has twice as many new Coronavirus Infections as the national average. And the daily Positivity Rate there in the Hawkeye State its above 20 . How is the state handling the spike and do they know whats behind it . Reporter well, craig, the state never had a firm handle on coronavirus here. The governor here never issued a statewide mask mandate and shes mandating that about 50 of schools need to have schools need to have 50 of students in person. Its things like that that have people concerned here because obviously mask wearing is something that Health Officials are saying can help contain the spread of the virus. Every day this week they have seen an increase of more than a thousand cases. Thats never happened here in iowa throughout the entire pandemic. So some serious increases here thats leading to and these constant lines we are seeing at this testing site behind me and they have seen a record breaking amount of hospitalizations so the icu beds are limited. But the governor here has not indicated that shes going to make any changes to help further curb the spread. She said yesterday in a press conference that iowans need to learn how to live with it. I spoke to people out in des moines and cedar rapids to see what they think of the governments response. Take a listen to what justine geller told me. I know a lot of people who have tested positive for covid. And i know people who are currently in the hospital because of it. Its made it a lot more real. I feel like for a long time a lot of americans were like, oh, this isnt going to affect me. This is just Something Else someone else has to deal with. Reporter justine noted that iowa is a very Community Based state. Everyone typically looks out for each other and so she and others echoed how much this is surprising that people dont seem to be only seem to be acting in their own selfinterest. So when people arent wearing masks, theyre not, you know, maintaining proper social distancing like we saw at the president s rally the other night, its concern because theres no other mitigation tactics being put into place here in iowa. Yeah. Troubling, troubling trend in iowa. There Maura Barrett for us in des moines, thank you. Texas, georgia, North Carolina, all critical states that are seeing huge numbers of people turn out to vote early. Were going to go to one of the states, North Carolina, where we have some brandnew numbers. Hundreds of thousands of people showed up on day one of early in inperson voting. I dont feel like a lot of people our age voted last time and its made a drastic impact on this country so im a little concerned. A drastic impact on this country so im a little concerned. Those are just a few of the more than 300,000 folks who took part in the first day of early voting in North Carolina. That figure is almost double the first day of early voting from 2016. Its the clearer sign that enthusiasm is high and that closely watched Battle Ground state. The latest poll from the New York TimesSiena College puts joe biden ahead. Leigh ann caldwell, folks are lined up in the rain for the second day. What are you seeing there, what are they telling you . Reporter hey, craig, that more than 300,000 people voted on the first day of early voting which was yesterday has broken all early voting number records. When you combine that with the 550,000 who had already sent in absentee ballots, that means that 12 of registered voters have already cast ballots in the state. Now, behind me theres been a line of cars all day lining up to vote which is one way to vote. And then at this polling place in downtown raleigh theres been a steady line here as well. I talked to some early voters about why they decided to show up two weeks before election day and heres what they had to say. I remember a time when you couldnt vote early. So this is a its one of the finest hours. You could do it. Cast your vote and see what happens. Enjoy the results. Whoever wins. Well talk about sending in a ballot, but we wanted to make sure that our ballot would count and it would get here and there are no issues with it. Reporter so these democratic voters wanted to make sure their vote would count and this is as you mentioned a Battle Ground state. It is crucial for the president to win the state if hes going to win the election. And Senate Republicans need their incumbent senator thom tillis to win in order for them to maintain control of the senate. Now, theres been a little bit of a scandal involving cunningham, the democrat. And he came up and it came out and he had an affair. I asked democratic voters here if they cared, they said they didnt. Its better than whats in power right now, craig. Leigh ann caldwell, i believe youre standing in front of a voting precinct. I was standing in front of it four years ago. I know that precinct well there in raleigh, North Carolina, thank you. Get dry. Lets turn now to eddie glaude chair of the department of africanamerican studies at princeton. And barbara boxer, who now hosts the boxer podcast. You guys are stepping it up, you have 12 books, no podcast. Yeah. Indeed. Senator, let me start with you. This morning, we learned more than a million votes have already been cast in georgia this cycle. This figure almost an even split between absentee and in person. Back in 2016 total votes cast 4 million. I know its early. Given your experience in politics all these years, what do those numbers signal to you . It signals that people are going to vote, especially the ones who were dared not to vote. When someone says to you, how dare you vote, you double down on the vote and when i look at the lines my heart swells. Im concerned. Are there enough of these opportunities . But the fact that people look at this line. This just swells my heart. People understand it. They get their own power and donald trump has scared everybody about mail in ballots. Hes scared them about sameday voting. Whats going to happen, is he going to send out his White Supremacy friends. They are taking this voting so seriously. Its extremely exciting. Last point. A long time ago when john kerry ran, my friend from ohio said, voters are waiting on line for 12 hours to vote. Will you help me . And we protested the ohio electoral vote because of those long lines and people gave up. It was raining, it was awful. It was on the day of election day. So since then, people are making plans to vote early. Its great. Professor, race appears to also be a factor in how long these voters are waiting. I want to read just a part of this report from our digital team. Quote, in 2019, researchers from the university of california los angeles, Carnegie Mellon university and the university of chicago found residents of entirely black neighborhoods waited 29 longer to vote and were 74 more likely to spend more than 30 minutes voting. We saw the long lines in georgia, that primary race got a lot of attention and long lines today in North Carolina as well. How do you think these factors are affecting the turnout that were seeing now . Well, theyre going to play a role, craig, i think, in the sense that africanamericans, particularly, know that when they go out to vote, that its going to take a minute. It will take a while. We know particularly in the governors race with Stacey Abrams and the like, we know that there were shenanigans at work. So i think part of what we should expect is the were going to expect these long lines, right. Were going to expect shenanigans as it were. I heard that in the reporting around North Carolina. This is part of the effort on the part of those who know that a high turnout does not necessarily bode well for them. That they want in some ways to suppress the vote but i think its clear that not only are folks prepared for this, they are expecting it and theyre actually waiting in the lines to vote. And thats a good sign. But i also want to say this, craig. We do know that under the context of the coronavirus in this moment, states knew that they would face certain sorts of challenges. Congress owes bears some responsibility here. They only allocated 400 million to help the states execute the election during this time. The states needed about 2 billion. You know, to execute this election under the crisis of corona. The House Democrats proposed 4 billion. This is on mcconnell and the republicans in the senate when the congress only allocated 400 million for the election under these certain conditions, craig. You know, some have also said, you know, you have a lot of folks who look at the long lines and theyll say, oh, its voter enthusiasm, indicative of enthusiasm. A lot of folks look at the long lines and they see Voter Suppression as well. I mean, you have to wonder in 2020 how it can be that this is acceptable. That people are forced to wait six, seven, eight hours to cast a ballot. Senator, this cycle of democrats as you know, they pencilled in several senate seats as opportunities to flip, including both in georgia. Where you have incumbent david perdue against john asa. And Kelly Loeffler up against raphael warnock, the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist church there in atlanta. Polls show that the reverend is leading. Do you think the democrats can pick up at least one of those senate seats in georgia . I do believe so. And i have watched this so carefully. Im helping reverend warnock and ashaw because the senate is where bills go to die and Mitch Mcconnell is not interested in folks voting. The republicans have become the party of Voter Suppression. Thats why youre right to say when we look at the lines on the one hand, were so thrilled that people are doing it. On the other hand, you want to cry because you say, why should it be so hard . We have gone all over the world. I as a senator did to make sure that people had democracies that functioned. This is not a way to function. People are really brave and theyre strong, but what about the ones that simply cant do it . So, yeah, the senate is where its at. Last point, the Supreme Court, we went through a sham of a hearing and we saw another seat stolen away from the democrats on this. The Supreme Court had a terrible ruling on the Voting Rights act. Something like this would never happen if we still that section of the Voting Rights act where at certain places in our nation where we have had a history of suppression. If you change the rules, you have to get clearance. So the fight for the senate, the fight for the oval, this is the moment. Im so proud of people for doing what they have to do to vote. All right. I wish we had more time but we have to leave it there. Professor eddie glaude, former senator barbara boxer, enjoy the weekend, by the way. No matter what their beliefs are. In thursdays nbc news town hall, my colleague Savannah Guthrie asked him specifically about qanon. Here is part of what he said. I know nothing about qanon. I just told you. You told me, but what you tell me doesnt necessarily make it fact. I hate to say that. I know nothing about it. I do know they are very much against, uh, pedophilia. They fight it very hard. Why not just say its crazy and not true . He may be right. I just dont know about qanon. You do know. No, i dont know. I want to bring in nbcs ben collins and brandy zedrozny. Ben, hes been asked about qanon before, in august he said he didnt know much about them but he heard they were people who love our country, he said he appreciates that they like him. The fbi has labeled qanon a potential domestic taylor threat. Remind our viewers and listeners on seirius satellite radio, wha does it mean for people to hear this from the president . I want to stress, if these people love our country, they show it in a very weird way. They think every living president other than donald trump eats children. Thats not what this is. Its not about loving your country. Interabout abo its not about pedophilia. Antitrafficking groups say qanon is making their life impossible. Instead of real tips about people who are actually being human trafficked, theyre clogging their lines with conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton. They think theres a global cabal of childeating satanists led by Hillary Clinton. It makes sense that donald trump would not disallow this. After all, if he loses this election, these people are potential customers and he can market directly to them. Brandy, theres another exchange from thursday night that hasnt gotten as much attention as the qanon exchange. This is President Trump talking about retweeting that Conspiracy Theory that Osama Bin Laden is still alive. The president said it was just a retweet, that he shares for other people to decide for themselves. What signal does this send to the people who buy into and act on conspiracy theories . So this one was a confusing one even for me, and this is my job, to follow these things. This convoluted theory that biden is involved in a coverup of a failed assassination of Osama Bin Laden. It makes no sense. Robert oneill, the former navy s. E. A. L. Who says he fired the shot that killed bin laden says its not true. It says that, number one, the president of the United States doesnt have the Media Literacy to be able to tell when something is obviously false. We saw that today when the president tweeted something from a satirical right wing news site as if it was fact. It sends a message that people who promote the vilist, most unbelievable content, that they will be rewarded by promotion by the president of the United States. Youve also got some new reporting, brandy, but the online army thats ready to amplify any claims from the president about a rigged election. What are you learning . Well, since april, President Trump has sort of built hes done a really great job, over the last four years, of building an online army. Since april hes been using it to sort of seed these false claims of a rigged election, specifically hes priming his base not to accept the election results. And so i talked to extremism researchers who track this i dont know wi track this onli. Were seeing these news stories about ballots thrown away being exaggerated by junk news sites, amplified by far right influencers and eventually promoted by the white house. It can lead to intimidation at the polls and its accelerating and potentially could continue well past election day. Brandy zadrozny, ben collins, thank you as always, thank you, thank you, thank you. Enjoy your weekend. That will do it for me this friday. I will see you back here bright and early on monday morning. Tonight, though, theres a new documentary, its called the way i see it. Im Andrea Mitchell in washington, with only 18 days to go, President Trump and former Vice President biden are both on the trail today. Last night it was a tale of two town halls. President trump, combative but barely mentioning joe biden as he fought back against persistent Fact Checking by Savannah Guthrie in miami. Just this week you retweeted to your 87 million followers a Conspiracy Theory that joe biden orchestrated to have s. E. A. L. Team 6, the navy s. E. A. L.
