Tamika palmers daughter, Breonna Taylor. Release the transcript. Release the transcript. Release the transcript. Release the transcript. Release the transcript. Release the transcript. Release the transcripts. Release the transcripts. Release the transcripts. Release the transcripts. I dont know if Daniel Cameron can hear us. Lets say it from the heart so not only Daniel Cameron can hear us, but Breonna Taylor can hear us from heaven, what we want Daniel Cameron, the Kentucky Attorney general to do. On three. One, two, three. Release the transcripts at this time before i bring up one of the greatest lawyers, one of the greatest secrets in louisville, kentucky, my cocounsel, my sister, my cowarrior, lanita baker. I would be remiss if i didnt tell you, tamika, people who are in the fraternity that youre in from all over america, a fraternity that no parent wants to be in, but far too many black mothers and fathers are part of, have sent their pledge of support to stand with you. All of them couldnt come like mr. Jacob black sr. , but all of them sent their report. When the announcement came out philonise floyd, the brothers and sisters from george floyd who was killed in minneapolis, minnesota, were the first ones to pledge their support. Right after that, lanita we got a call from sabrina fulton, Trayvon Martins mother. Right after that we got a text from Michael Browns mother, leslie mcspadden. Right after that we got a call from botham jones mother who was killed in his apartment in dallas, texas. We got a call from his mother allison jean and his sister alicia finley. We got a call from house representative lucy macbeth who fought for jordan davis, a son killed for playing loud music. We got a call from dr. Tiffany crutcher, the sister of Terence Crutcher killed in tulsa, cloek. That was handsup dont shoot on video. We got a call from gwen carr, Eric Gardners mother from staten island, new york. We got a call from tamir rices mother, timaria. We got a call from philando castillos moth. We got a call from Stephon Clarks mother and grandmother, who was killed in sacramento, california. We got notified that Sandra Blands mother is pledging her support to be with you. We got notified that ezell floyd, a brother having a Mental Health crisis in los angeles, california, is pledging his support. Dijon khan see shot 15 times two weeks ago in the back by the Los Angeles County sheriffs department. I left los angeles coming here. His aunt who raised him, even though she lost her nephew who she raised as her own son. Joseph richardsons mother. Baton rouge, louisiana. I mean the list goes on and on and on. So we are here declaring in Breonna Taylors name enough is enough, america. Enough is enough, america. Enough is enough, america. Enough is enough, america. Enough is enough, america. Enough is enough, america. Enough is enough america. Enough is enough, america. Please join me in welcoming a great champion for justice, my cocounsel from the law firm of sam aguillar who is also present with us and deserves acknowledgment, a great, great lawyer. We give you attorney lanita baker. I know attorney crump is demanding that we release the transcripts. I echo that demand. We dont want to hear that you cant release the transcript because you released the recording of kenny walkers grand jury proceedings, so you can release the recordings, and we demand that you release the recordings. Not only do we want the recordings and the transcript, what we also want is for you to quit dodging the questions, David Cameron. You were asked at the press conference did you make a recommendation. You refused to answer. Answer the question. Answer the question. Ive asked you several times did you even present any charges regarding Breonna Taylor to the grand jury. I dont want to hear that the grand jury determined this if its your office that unilaterally determined not to charge any officers with the death of Breonna Taylor. You cant pawn this off on the grand jury if your office made that decision. And we, the voters, deserve the right to know who is it that we need to say got it wrong. Did the grand jury get it wrong in using the defensive justification or did your office get it wrong . What we know in kentucky and what many of you may not know is i practiced criminal law for 13 years in this common went of kentucky. I did it as a prosecutor and a defense attorney. So i know the law of selfdefense in kentucky. I know you dont have the right to use the defense of selfdefense when you injury or kill an innocent third party. What we know from sergeant mattinglys own testimony to the Public Integrity unit is that he saw that Breonna Taylor was unarmed. Yes. His own testimony, he saw Breonna Taylor was unarmed. And then you made put a lot of attention on the bullet the fatal shot to Breonna Taylor being made by myles cosgrove. If he wasnt able to see Breonna Taylor to also see she was unarmed, he was firing just as recklessly as brett hanison. If he didnt see her, he didnt have target acquisition, he deserves to be charged right now. Yeah. So dont tell us the grand jury made this determination if it was yours determination. Answer that question head on. Was it your offices decision or the grand jurys decision. Release the transcript. I know we have a lot going on. Ive been angry, i have been angry and im angry baugh, as i said, i worked in this system. I worked as a prosecutor who fought so hard to make sure i was administering justice regardless of who the victim was, regardless of who the perpetrator was. Thats the only way the system is going to work is to have prosecutors, Daniel Cameron, that work for us. Daniel cameron, i took offense to you not being fully up front with Tamika Palmer when we met with you. I take true offense to that. You have to know your legal obligations as a prosecutor is to inform the family, to talk to the family, to keep them informed on whats going on. You failed to do that, and you failed to be fully honest with her when we met with you while the grand jury was being relayed to the public. You told us we would know in advance. We learned at the same time that america learned. Thats unacceptable. Thats right. We have a right to be angry. But i do want to talk to those of us who have been on the ground. We cant let the anger consume us. Weve still got work to do. And we cant fully think when were consumed by anger. Ive been praying. Ive been praying this morning to not let the anger thats been inside of me consume me and come out today because i know we have work to do. Im dressed down today because im staying down here, because i want lmpd majors who say were the ones out here washing cars or checking you out at walmart. No, were not. Were lawyers, were business people. Were City Employees just like you. Guess what . Even if i was washing your car, it doesnt matter. I have a right to use my voice. Two years ago i was checking people in and out of a hotel while also practicing as a lawyer. Guess what . When i was there i was the same person that i am practicing law. So lmpd you have to change the mentality of who youre fighting. Youre not going to have this city of louisville believe that those who were with them was burning down a library. Stop the lies. We cant move forward with the lies. Yes. We cant move forward with the lies. We know we need healing. We know the city needs healing. Were willing to do our part but you have to do your part. Until you start doing your part, we wont heal. Were here when youre ready to listen to us, to come down. I challenge those of you who are off today, you dont have to come down and protest, but i challenge you to come down and listen to the people protesting. Those of you in elected offices, come down here during the day and listen to the protesters. Businesses who say we support you, support us by coming down there, showing them were not just car washers, checking people out. Theres so many more people down here and quit skewing the way that people are protesting. You know the majority of people down here are nonviolent. Youve been down here for 120 days. You know it. Quit making it seem like theyre violent. Theyre not. Yes, shout out to the 502. Thats how were learning the truth. That is how were learning the tru truth. Regular media, film it all. Dont slant it. Tell the truth. Lmpd tell the whole truth. Everybody tell the whole truth including you Daniel Cameron. Did you make the decision or did the grand jury make the decision . [ applause ] thats why i call her my cowarrior, not my cocounsel, cowarrior, lanita baker. Let me repeat that. Maybe they didnt hear me. Thats why i call her my cowarrior, not cocounsel, cowarrior. Attorney aguillar, the secret is out of the bag now, the secret is out of the bag what a great, wellkept secret kentucky has in attorney lanita baker. I tell you. Its a wakeup call to these elected officials because she represents the most talented, most articulate, most intellectual representative of this city that we have to offer. So if you dont do your job, its going to be people like lanita baker or others who are going to take your seat. Before we bring this next champion of justice up, we want to have a statement from the family. You know sam for 191 days people all across america, people elected in washington like senator kamala harris, people in the National Basketball association, in the womens National Basketball association, nfl players, celebrities who we all call to the protests, yeah, i remember they came to the capital like jay da Pinkett Smith and common and so many others, rhapsody, so many others. More importantly, just regular people, real lar folk, black, hispanic, native, all over the world have been saying say her na name. How is it that the indictment that Kentucky Attorney general Daniel Cameron didnt mention her name one time . So Tamika Palmer, before we bring your sister up to speak, i want you all to do me a favor. Since he didnt say it in the indictment, say her name. Breonna taylor. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Next we will hear from the sister of Tamika Palmer, the aunt of Breonna Taylor, Bianca Austin who i will tell you, before we were fighting for Breonna Taylor, she was like the lawyer on the front line leading the protest. It is aptly appropriate for bianca to come and make a statement on behalf of breonna. Ill ask for your undivided attention while she reads a message from the family and especially from the heart of breonnas mother, Tamika Palmer. Please, ms. Austin. Thank you, thank you. Im standing here today. Im going to represent my niece in her jacket. I chose this to have her be a part of us today. Also, i just want to shout out to our family. Its been a long six months and its been a wild roller coaster. Not only have we been out here fighting for justice for breonna, but were continuing to lose our family members to cancer, to covid, to being murdered. My message to you is just cry your tears, lift your head up and keep stepping. I hear you, bianca. Most of you know this has been emotionally, mentally and physically draining to my sister. Im going to do the honor and read her thoughts after daniel co camerons decision, and i quote, i never had faith in Daniel Cameron to begin with. Amen. I knew he was too inexperienced to deal with a job of this caliber. I knew he had already chosen to be on the wrong side of the law. The moment he wanted the grand jury to make the decision, what i had hoped is that he knew he had the power to do the right thing, that he had the power to start the healing of this city, that he had the power to help men over 400 years of oppression. What he helped me realize is that it will always be us against them, that we are never safe when it comes to them. Mattingly in an email called us animals and thugs. Its clear that that is the way they will always see us. I was reassured wednesday of why i have no faith in the legal system in the police, in the law that are not made to protect us black and brown people. But when i speak on it, im considered an angry black woman. But know this, i am an angry black woman. I am not angry for the reasons that you would like me to be. But angry because our black women keep dying at the hands of police officers. And black men. And black men. Angry because our children are dying at the hands of police officers. And im angry because this nation is learning that our black women dying at the hands of police officers, and this is not okay. You can take the dog out of the fight, but you cant take the fight out of the dog. Say it again. For lack of better terms, bark, bark for being the dog Still Standing to fight. Yeah i knew cameron would never do his job. What i do know is that him and countless others will go to bed sleeping with breonnas face still hearing her, say her name. Cameron alone didnt fail her, but it ended when the lack of investigation failed her, the officer who told a lie to obtain the search warrant failed her. The judge who signed the search warrant failed her. The terrorists who broke down her door failed her. The system as a whole has failed her. You didnt just rob me and my family, you robbed the world of a queen, a queen willing to do a job that most of us could never stomach to do, a queen willing to build up any one around her, a queen who was starting to pave her path. I hope you never have to know the pain of knowing your child is in need of help and youre not able to give it. I hope you never hear the sounds of seeing someone cry and beg for your family to get help and she never receives help. Those cries was ignored. I hope you never know the pain of your child being murdered 191 days in a row, Tamika Palmer. I am so sorry, so sorry youve got to go through this, so sorry. Its unacceptable, but your family got your back. Were not going nowhere. We got your back. Until freedom has your back, lanita has your back, ben has your back, your daddy has your back. Guess what, this park, these people out here stomping on these grounds has your back. Thats right. Thats right. And sam got her back. And god definitely got your back. Thank you bianca. And thank you for reading the words from a mothers heart; a heart that is broken. Thank you bianca. That was heartfelt. Every mother around the world could feel tamikas pain. We take a moment for a second to reflect on what we just heard. Just know we love you, Tamika Palmer. Were standing with you. Im sorry. Its okay. You can get me as wet as you want. What a wonderful soul. At this time i really mean it because when lanita and sam called me you know, black women are often disrespected. We were calling people in the media. We know its a call celeb now, but people are not trying to do stories on Breonna Taylor, this black woman who was killed by the police. And a lot of people did not return my calls as we were begging to give attention to Breonna Taylor. But i got to tell you, a lot of people did answer the call, and i wont go through the list, but one young woman who answered the call, i had known she was a champion for justice for our days fighting for Trayvon Martin and so many other families that have been inflicted with this Police Terrorism that claimed the lives of their loved ones. Not only did she answer the bell, she said, crump, we are not going to leave this until we get charges. It was deep to me, lanita. You remember, we then started going on her social media and doing the instagram lives just to try to bring awareness of Breonna Taylors name. And i remember others allowing us to use their platform. I dont want to take anything away from ricky smiley and charlemagne and reverend al sharpton, but this young lady almost every day went on social media and followed janiahs lead, remember she went on social media every day and said my sister Breonna Taylors life mattered, when nobody else was listening. Then this young lady got involved and has us all on her social media every day. We strategized every day and she said, you know what, crump . Me and my organization, until freedom were moving to louisville, kentucky, and we or going to stay every day because if Tamika Palmer cant sleep in peace, neither can we. Were going to come and be in solidarity together demanding justice for Breonna Taylor and for i think now over four months you all have been here, living here this whole time. Thats why i call her the queen of the movement for justice for Breonna Taylor. My sister, my warrior, my Freedom Fighter Tamika Mallory no justice. No peace. No justice. No peace. No justice. No peace. No justice. No peace. If there aint going to be no justice, aint going to be no peace. I want to read something to you all that i learned of just the day after Daniel Camerons decisi decision. It says it is a great honor to receive the endorsement of the bipartisan kentucky fraternal order of police. To the men and women in blue, i pledge to be your advocate and your voice every day. When i first got into this race, i did so to bring focus to the Public Safety challenge of our lifetime, the drug crisis. And there is so much work to be done to fight this epidemic. I am humbled to have this endorsement. As a chief Law Enforcement officer in kentucky, i will work every day to make our Community Safer and our families and citizens more secure. That statement is from daniel co cameron when he received the endorsement of the fop, one of the most racist organizations that exists in america. I got time today. Half of that statement was a lie. Daniel cameron is not here to protect citizens and to make the state of kentucky safer, but he was honest about one part and that is that he is an advocate for police and that he was going to be their voice and to do whatever is necessary to protect them. So we learned that he stood hes a man of his word as it relates to his relationship to police. He protected the police, and it did not matter to him one bit that those same officers could have ran in his black mammas house and shot her to death. Hes more committed to the White Supremacy that he is upholding. He mentioned at the press conference which i thought was quite interesting, that hes a black man. As i lay and cry and hurt for Tamika Palmer and for Breonna Taylor and for kenny walker and for janiah who we need to love up on, as i laid there and i thought about him saying hes a black man, i thought about the shifts that went into fort monroe and jamestown with our people on them more than 400 years ago and how there were also black men on those ships that were responsible for bringing our people over here. Daniel cameron is no different than the sellout negros that sold our people into slavery and helped white men to capture our people, to abuse them and to traffic them while our women were raped, while our men were raped by savages. That is who you are, Daniel Cameron. You are a coward. You are a sellout and you were used by the system to harm your own mamma, your own black mamma. We have no respect for you, no respect for your black skin because all of our skin folk aint our kin folk. You do not belong to black people at all. We learned that on the same exact day that this announcement came out, it was the day that in september of i forget the year, 1955, 65 no, 1955 which was 65 years ago, emmett till im Steve Kornacki in new york. We have been listening to and watching those proceedings in louisville, kentucky. Breonna taylors attorney, friends and family the first time we heard from her family since the grand jury decision not to file charges directly related to Breonna Taylors killing. Her aunt wore her emt jacket. Attorney Benjamin Crump led the crowd in a chant of say her name. Cal perry is in louisville with the latest. I know the press conference is still going on there, but there were some specific demands made here by Benjamin Crump and the family for actions they would like to see Daniel Cameron, the attorney general of kentucky take. What specifically are they calling for here . Reporter specifically they want to see the transcripts of the grand jury proceeding. Benjamin crump very straightforward in his remarks saying first he was outraged and confused by that grand jury indictment, just to revimind ou viewers, none of the three officers were charged in the killing of Breonna Taylor. He asked did the attorney general present any evidence on behalf of breonna, did he put his finger on the scales of justice . I demand the release of the transcript of the grand jury proceedings so we can find out if any evidence was presented on her behalf. He finished i thought the most poignant moment he said, was this kind of a sham grand jury proceeding, what kind of a sham grand jury proceeding was this . It follows a pattern of the blatant disrespect and marginalization of black people and specifically black women in america. I have to tell you it is very reflective of what this city feels like, what protesters who have been here for over 190 days feels like, which is ha the process itself is flawed. You take the warrant that led police to the door of Breonna Taylor. The fbi is investigating how they came to that warrant, how the affidavits were signed on behalf of those officers to allow them to go into that apartment. What weve heard time and time again for the attorneys and from the family is again that it is the process that is flawed, that the grand jury proceedings themselves were flawed. They want to know what the attorney general, David Cameron who are is a republican, what he actually presented to that grand jury. Theyre calling for those transcripts, steve. Okay. Cal perry on the ground in louisville. I know that press conference will continue. Im sure youll continue to monitor it. We will as well. Cal, thank you for that. This is a live look right now at capitol hill where Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg is the first woman and the first jewish person ever to lie in state at the u. S. Capitol. This hour were watching lawmakers as they say their final goodbyes to this cultural icon and legal giant. Democratic president ial nominee joe biden and his wife at the capitol for the ceremony. I want to go to nbcs kasie hunt. Weve still got the shot on the screen there of Justice Ginsburgs casket. Weve been watching scenes throughout the morning. Take us through what youre seeing. Reporter a very somber day and the focus really on the women members of congress, many of whom would credit Justice Ginsburg for them being able to hold these seats to have the opportunity to serve in congress, to be as Justice Ginsburg would put it earlier in her career, equal to any man. So the women members were given the first opportunity after the service concluded to come by and pay their respects to Justice Ginsburg. We saw the many, many Democratic Women many fewer republican women who serve in congress but we did see a few of them as well, republican women come to pay their respects. Of course, that service also worth noting, we saw the rabbi who spoke pay tribute to Justice Ginsburg. In addition to being the first woman to lie in state, shes the first jewish person to lie in state, rosa parks laid in honor, thats reserved for private citizen, lying in state for government officials. Worth noting today, we did not see Mitch Mcconnell or kevin mccarthy, mcconnell in the senate and kentucmccarthy in th house. Typically on a day like this you would see the big four leaders, the Bipartisan Group greet the cassette, perhaps participate in the ceremonies, at least be seated in places of honor, but mcconnell and mccarthy both chose to skip the event apparently. Neither mcconnell or mccarthys office have offered an explanation for why that was. Steve scalise, the number two republican in the house did attend and was seen chatting with others who were here. Its also worth noting, steve, there were a few people in the audience here today that maybe have been overlooked in the past. Ruth Bader Ginsburgs how keeper, elizabeth, was seated in a place of honor. Her trainer, bryant johnson, also attended. His tribute was to drop before her casket and do three pushups before exiting the building, steve. Kasie hunt at the capitol, thank you for that. While we watch lawmakers unite to honor the life of the late jins, there are still deep and growing divisions over the issue of filling herve khan see on the court. Right now President Trump is in doral, florida on a campaign swing. Less than 40 days out from our traditional election date. Hes set to name his pick for ginsburgs seat tomorrow. Kelly odonnell in doral, the president holding an event with latino supporters as we speak. Were taking a look at the images from inside there. The president expected to announce tomorrow his nominee to replace the late Justice Ginsburg. What are you hearing in terms of who this might be . Reporter well, certainly the perceived frontrunner is Amy Coney Barrett who is a married mother of seven, has taught notre dame, resident of indiana and has certainly been a favorite among social conservatives. She came to prominence the last time the president was making a select. She was interviewed at that time and certainly in the circles that matter to the president on this issue as far as conservative legal thought, she is considered very popular and has been exposed to some degree of vetting through that process. One source i spoke to said one of the great concerns for the president is making certain there are no surprises in the time of announcing a name until there is a confirmation vote. Of course, the kavanaugh experience was very different than that because while he had these sterling credentials as a jurist, we all went through the very difficult, painful public process of his confirmation and allegations of Sexual Misconduct which he denied. In this instance, President Trump wants what effectively would be a home run selection. One of the questions is how far has he looked. The white house has not given us a lot of indication about how the president has gone through this process. He has said he had a list of five women. He does speak publicly about the fact this wouill be a choice. The white house and president will not confirm if Barbara Lagoa has been considered. Shell represent cuban americans on the high court if she were selected and confirmed. Florida is certainly at play in this election. If the president is willing to acknowledge those Political Considerations beyond legal questions for his selection, that certainly makes barbara lag go wah an attractive choice. The president is doing this event for latinos for trump, where hes hearing stories about their own immigrant journey and their effort to build a life and business here in the u. S. Hes done some hitting on the fbi on the reports dealing with the crossfire hurricane investigation. This is very rally oriented even though the setting in an indoor ballroom and a little more formal. The rhetoric is much what we hear on the campaign trail. Steve. Kelly odonnell in florida. Thank you for that. Right now, as we say, the white house pushing forward quickly, that decision on who donald trump is going to choose to replace or at least to nominate to replace Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg. That decision expected soon. The possibility that trump will get this appointment through has energized evangelical activists and antiabortion actives across the country. Ellison barber is joining us now. We think back to 2016 and there was the Supreme Court opening, they left it open hoping to motivate evangelical voters. Similar thought from the president. What are you hearing on that front . Reporter this is certainly a moment that seems to be galvanizing a lot of those voters for people who want to see roe v. Wade overturned and ultimately the end of legal abortions in the united states. They say this is a significant moment for them politically regardless of what republican senators have said in the past, as it relates to considering and voting on a Supreme Court nominee this close to an election, they say they want to see President Trumps pick voted on and confirmed as soon as possible. Listen here. Its an important moment pour the Pro Life Community and for our cause. Youd be lying, so to speak, if you didnt say, wow, what a great opportunity. This woman will stand for life and make decisions based on that. Weve waited on this opportunity for the last 50 years. I think its normal for a politician, if you want something to go through on your side, youre going to flip the way the democrats have done. It doesnt bother me because this issue is so important. I dont think it matters how we get there. It just matters that we get there. Reporter we spoke to dozens of voters who oppose abortion rights after a prayer vigil in sarasota, florida. I asked those voters who identified as republicans if it was worth it for them for this vote to take place before the election or move ahead close enough if it were to cost republicans the senate majority. Almost every Single Person i asked that question to said, yes, it was absolutely worth it. One person disagreed with the premise of the question. She said she believes this is an issue that will help republicans across the board. Steve. All right, ellison. Of course, florida one of those states, if that last person you spoke to is right, a mustwin for the president. Ellison barber in florida, thank you for that. Its this target democrats are talking about at some point in the future, maybe as early as this year, making a run at the president ial election. And where you are, harris county, houston, one of the epicenters for that push for democrats. What are you seeing on the ground there . Reporter lots of buzz and excitement around voting, steve. This Voter Registration drive will be getting under way in just under a half hour.
