But i dont think anybody is it just took a turn for the really willing to sacrifice the to mandate mask wearing and worse when he got to the health of their families just to hospital. Physical distancing as much as its been very difficult. Get back to normal see. This is scary. Possible. They need to keep their reporter the full context of employees safe. Its devastating. This, of course, is that case here is one from hillary. I cant again even imagine. Numbers are rising in california, like in many parts my 14yearold Daughters School of the country. District planned to reopen but i applaud you for taking the the big worry, of course, is traditionally with an inperson time to come on television, to that hospitalizations number, format as of last week. Around 6,500 patients right now, use your familys experience as no masks required unless on the school bus. A warning to other people. That number up from 28 just two youll never know if youve weeks ago. Thats certainly a number that as i weigh the choice of public saved other lives just by being school versus home school, what officials want to get under out there and being strong and would you recommend as a control. Theyre hoping these new brave enough amid this crisis in decontamination process when precautions will put a dent in your family to do that. Things. Coming home from school. Kerry, good morning. Give us the latest on the question i have. If coronavirus can hang in the testing and how the state is air longer than previously handling this demand. Reported, should runners and bikers be required to wear reporter its those numbers you just talked about speaking masks . Dr. Roy, do you think thats a that raised anxiety, not only good idea . I see it all the time. For people who feel ill, but ill see people walking on the just for people who live in streets of manhattan, most of florida who want to get tested. Them wearing a mask. So they come to places as early the runners and bikers not so much. As 1 00 to begin lining up here, chris, you and i are here in for instance, to get the test, new york city. I, too, go outside running, i and then they snake through a work out outside, but i very slowmoving line. You can see some of the cars definitely wear a mask. So theres a couple of different over my shoulder, eventually going into tests and getting the issues. Bruce is asking a really great test. In some cases it can be a six to question. It still is really important to wear a mask, especially because sevenhour wait after they open the line to get the test. We believe when were more thats how many people are in exertional, the respiratory line here. Droplets may expel even further. But then you complicate it with the wait to get the results. Instead of six feet they the results can take sometimes seven, eight, up to 15 days recommend more than that, maybe waiting for the results. 12 to 20feet distance. The problem with all of that is wearing the Face Covering is important. Somebody comes to the line here its impossible to get that to get a test. Kind of distance on the streets they feel okay but are a little of new york. To be honest about it, i wasnt anxious and then they go and start waiting for their test the one doing the running or the results, but they go about their biking. Im just walking. Good for you, dr. Roy, for doing daily lives. Theyre not going to selfisolate for 15 days unaware it. Lets also get to a question whether they have coronavirus or about the virus impact on the not. Because they are out and about, body. Stephen said, its been said the idea of getting the test that covid19 leaves permanent damage to the lungs. Results later reveals the fact isnt it also true that those who do survive will be that, well, they did have it and categorized as having a now they spread it to other people. Preexisting condition . You cant Contact Trace eight, what will it mean for the future of health care and insurance 15 days worth of somebodys coverage in america . Life. So theyre talking about dr. Ungerleider, i have heard this question a lot. Potentially creating now two what do you think . Lines at facilities like this, theres evidence that covid one for people who have can have longterm effects symptoms. The other for those who dont including lung disease for people at all ages. Have symptoms. But, of course, thats we dont know who is at higher ultimately the honor system. Risk, were learning about the if you have a short line for people who have symptoms, this virus and how it impacts the body. I think we all need to take this being florida, i think youre very seriously. Currently under the affordable going to find people saying, care act, Health Insurance ill just say i have symptoms companies cant refuse to cover and ill go over there. You or charge you more because you have a preexisting the governor in many ways has consistently stayed with his plan and policy which is push condition. This down to the local level. I just want to add, if you let the mayors, let the counties cant maintain the distance, thats why the mask is really decide how theyre going to handle the provisions of critical. Just want to make that clear. Protecting people, whether you absolutely. Have to wear masks, whether thanks to both of you. Youre going to stick around restaurants can be open. Because theres another story all of that. So when the governor held a news youd like to weigh in on. Coming up, an entire family in conference, i guess this was florida has been devastated by eventually going to happen he the virus. One mothers plea for us all to was in an area where somebody decided to heckle him. Wear a mask and the nightmare take a listen. Shes living right now. Lets use the same word we heard from Kerry Sanders, frustration. Meantime, in the san antonio area hospitals are under extreme stress. Despite the intensifying pandemic, schools in texas are still set to reopen with inperson learning. I want to bring in brian woods, superintendent of north side Independent School district, the Largest School district in the san antonio area. Thank you so much for taking the time. I know youve got a lot on your plate right now. Look, the state has made it pretty clear, reopen the School Building or lose funding. Students can in texas do online schooling. Obviously that presents a big complication for parents who have to work. So how do you get, superintendent, kids the education they need while trying to keep them safe . Its a great question. As you say, its a daunting question. The guidance that we have so far we are continuing to see an from our state is that after a alarming spike in the number of small period of kind of ramp up, coronavirus cases among younger where schools would actually have some say in limiting people. In michigan, case in point, 43 capacity in buildings, that we peeft have tested positive for will need to go back to covid19 after a fourth of july inperson learning for any party, most of them between 15 family that chooses it. And 25 years old. Obviously were in the process of trying to stand up really in south florida a mother wants everyone to hear her familys story. She says her 21yearold son just between us, robust Distance Learning, much you know whats better than mopping . More than what we were able to contracted the virus at a anything at the end of a long day, do in the spring. Friends house, brought it home we know a significant number of and now the whole family is its the last thing i want to do. Our families will choose to have sick. That includes her husband who well i switched to swiffer wet jet their children educated that has been in the icu and on a and its awesome. Its an allinone so its ready to go when i am. Way. So i guess the question is ventilator for nearly two weeks. How do you sort of balance these that mother, michelle, joining the cleaning solution actually breaks down dirt and grime. Me now. And the pad absorbs it deep inside. Things between federal state thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us. So, it prevents streaks and haze better than my old mop. I cant even begin to imagine guidelines and local . What your family is going plus, its safe to use on all my floors, even wood. Obviously we have a tradition in through. Let me start, if i can with how this country of letting local glad i got that off my chest folks decide whats best in is your husband doing today . And the day off my floor. Their schools for their try wet jet with a moneyback guarantee students. It goes up and down. Do you believe there need to be bottom line standards that all schools everywhere in the country have to follow kind of a hes been on the ventilator now for 15 days. Baseline that School Districts like yours can then work from he was feeling a little bit and adapt to your particular ut better with his breathing. Now theres been a couple other you meet minimum standards. Complications that have come up. I think that sounds reasonable. Hes lost some blood, his counts i think obviously all of us who have dropped. Theyre doing tests now to see studied the cdc guidance, and i if theres any internal bleeding think thats a reasonable ask. I do want to emphasize that in going on at this point or where hes losing the blood. My opinion that local boards of this is what happens. You go in for one thing and all trustees, local superintendents these other secondary effects and teachers need to be making start to kick in. The lions share of the thats the severity and the decisions. Unfortunately in some of the scariness of this virus states of our country right now, and certainly texas is one of altogether, just being in the them, that power has been really icu for so long. Removed from our hands. We do not have a lot of local have you been able to see him Decision Making authority, and at all during this time . That is making our teachers and no, maam. Were not allowed into the hospital, but i have been able our parents understandably very to face time him. Luckily with the nurses, theyre uncomfortable. Let me ask you about the my lifeline. Students themselves and what theyre my only connection to youre hearing from students. Him and how i can see him, make i was struck. During this hour yesterday we sure hes okay, and we talk to talked to some students in virginia and a senior in high school decided she was going to him every other day at least, if not every day. Take the online option. My daughter and i tell him we here is what she said. Going to school right now feels love him so much, hes been a like such an experiment. Great daddy and we cant wait for him to come home. For my peers, my family, my we give him hope and try to up younger siblings, were not lift him every day. Willing to be a part of that my goodness, that is just experiment. What do you say to a student or heartbreaking to hear. Were going to take a minute to a parent who says, you know talk to one of our doctors. What . I dont want my kids, nor should were having a little audio we have our teachers being problem and were going to check on that if we can and hoping to guinea pigs. Theres just so much we dont get back to you. Dr. Roy, if i can, i think dr. Know. I guess what i would say is i get it. So weve been working literally since the first of april to try lipi roy is back with us. Dr. Roy, when you hear stories like this, whether its a fourth to stand up a full year of good day. Of july party that happened in im Andrea Mitchell in really robust Distance Learning washington. Michigan and now you have as the coronavirus is hitting so those students get the same literally dozens of people dangerous new heights, just infected or its just an three states, texas, california, quality experience that theyre individual person going to see a and florida, now account for used to getting in our nearly 20 of covid19 cases friend and comeseld ng classrooms in a much more normal year. I feel good were going to be globally, around the world, in able to serve those students the last 24 hours. Today california governor gavin well and that they will leave newsom is largely closing down the end of the school year as well educated as they would have again, stopping Indoor Dining and closing bars, zoos, movie had they been in the building every day. Theaters, museums. And in most counties in the really do you think thats possible . State, gyms, houses of worship, i really do. I have a lot of confidence in hair salons and malls. This as florida today reports our ability to deliver high quality Distance Learning. More than 9,000 new cases there. The debate over schools around i think that there are real the country is intensifying and concerns let me interrupt you for just a second, and i apologize. San diego districts announced virtual classes only for the i know theres a little delay. Fall, even as White House Task force member admiral brett today i was reading the about the challenge of just taking giroir told safe vannah guthrie roll call, learning what kids are not just logged on but the today show, quote, theres listening. Its so complicated. No such thing as no danger and ive talked to so many teachers the risks to children are very who talk about trying to connect small. Dr. Ho with their students. I talked to students who say, you know what im going to throw something out there math, thats my hardest subject. I text my teacher and tell her im having a problem. She might not get back to me for hours and then ive lost my train of thought. How do you say you can really deliver that quality of learning, superintendent . I think those are all legitimate questions, and theyre all questions were trying to solve. For instance, were trying to stand up an instructional help desk so if a student has a question and needs help immediately, they can get it even on extended hours, outside the regular school day. Obviously weve got a lot of work to do with device delivery, making sure our kids and families have internet access. Thats going to be a significant lift. I think your comment about taking attendance virtually is entirely legitimate. In the state of texas the document that describes that is 22 singlespaced pages. That will certainly be a challenge and take a lot of training for our teachers who are also going to be extremely busy with inperson and Distance Learning, at least the way the guidance is in our state right now. All across the country we have seen administrators, teachers, not taking a day, if even a moment off. I know youve been working on this so far ever since this pandemic hit. Its incredibly complicated, superintendent brian woods, i thank you very much for taking the time. Good luck to you, your teachers and students. We appreciate you. Thank you. Thank you. Have a good day. You, too. Coming up, the heartbreaking toll this virus is taking on one family in florida. All of them infected. The father is on a ventilator with no one allowed to visit him. Check out the video from back when he was a regular and frequent guest in the oval office. But now hes been the target of a campaign to damage his credibility. He did not meet with President Trump yesterday either. Instead he met with trumps chief of staff. As the president and his press secretary tried to downplay any rift, the fact is americans in a recent poll said they trust fauci over trump on the coronavirus almost three to one. No doubt response to the coronavirus is on voters minds as they head to the polls today. Right now primary elections are being held in texas, alabama and maine. Check out a live look inside one polling place in alabama where, despite rising coronavirus cases there, masks are not being required. The big race there, the Senate Republican primary. Voters choosing between President Trumps former attorney general Jeff Sessions and former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville the big board following the races. Take us through what we need to watching today. Two biggies you mentioned in alabama, tuberville versus sessions. The winner will take on doug jones a democratic in deep red alabama. Remember jones won the special election in december 2017 against roy moore. Roy moore had all sorts of problems in that campaign. Jones won. He will be the most vulnerable democratic running for reelection to the senate this november. Jeff sessions, four terms as a u. S. Senator in alabama, but he goes into this as the underdog today. We can show you why. In the preliminary, where they pick the top two candidates, sessions actually was in second place behind tuberville. Tuberville did lead sessions in the preliminary. Polls have shown tuberville ahead in this thing. The president the big x factor. Alabama a state trump won by 28 points. Trump personally invested int j his former attorney general. There have been a few primaries where the president endorsed one candidate and Republican Voters chose another. This would be a very extreme example of that if sessions were to win. The other one were keeping an eye on is in texas. You have m. J. Hhegar and royce west. The interesting thing is in texas, at the president ial level, trump versus biden, weve seen polling to show this a very incredible race in texas. Biden with a chance. Do democrats put a lot of money, a lot of resources in texas and does that help, potentially give the democratic nominee against cornyn a chance . The polling has been competitive in the president ial race, a little more lopsided in the senate race. Well keep an eye on that. Again, democrats will take the first critical step picking a candidate to run against cornyn. The backdrop for all of this, battle for control of the United States senate. If joe biden wins, democrats need a net gain of three seats. We mentioned alabama where doug jones is trying to hang on against the odds. If jones cant do that, democrats would need a net gain of four. Theyve been looking at arizona, colora will be for democrats in texas and theres a lot of strategic and money questions that go along with that. Doug jones, if hes going to have a chance in november, uphill fight for him. Who is he going to run against . Thats the other big decision today, chris. Were campaigning during the coronavirus. Steve kornacki, thank you. Let me bring in charlie sykes, an msnbc contributor. This alabama race is fascinating for a couple reasons. Whoever wins the primary goes up against doug jones, the most vulnerable democratic this year, critical if the gop is going to hold the senate. Then you have the trump factor. Does Jeff Sessions have a chance . Unlikely, and thats what makes this so fascinating, the fall of Jeff Sessions. He was trump before trump. Hes running as a completely trumpified candidate on issues like immigration, law and order. In this primary were policies than they were in trump endorsements, the trump consult of personality. Nothing that Jeff Sessions has done to win back Donald Trumps favor has worked so far. So at the top of most democrats wish lists is to beat mitch mcconnell. Amy mcgrath was on morning joe this morning. The primary that just happened, enormous turnout, more than weve had in a decade. Folks are really ready to get rid of him. No matter where you go, whether its louisville or in eastern kentucky, folks are hurting and they are tired of a man who continually prioritizes things like tax cuts for the wealthiest 1 and big corporations. Charlie, she has raised a lot of money, name recognition, infrastructure, on and on and on with mitch mcconnell. Based on where things are right now, how realistic do you think it is that she could mount a serious challenge . I think thats a long shot. People need to understand that. Look, if this is a complete democratic tsunami, a lot of seats are in place. Doug jones can get reelected. Kansas, texas, south carolina, maybe alaska in play. Those are reaches. Right now the seats that are on the bubble are places like montana and maybe georgia and potentially iowa. Those are how much more realistic chances to get to that net gain of three or four that the democrats are going to need. Lets talk a little bit i mentioned campaigning in the time of the coronavirus. Something that has emerged as what looks like a force is the Lincoln Project. Most people know its the work of lets call them disenchanted republicans. One of the ads they have out targets republican senators who have ties to the president. Lets take a quick look at part of that. Some day soon the time of trump will pass. This circus of incompetence, corruption and cruelty will end. When it does, the men and women in Trumps Republican Party will come to you telling you they can repair the damage hes done. Theyll beg you to forgive their votes to exonerate trump from his crimes. Circus of incompetence, charlie. Is that preaching the the choir, or is that powerful ammunition in these races . Well, it is powerful ammunition because of the decision that the Senate Republicans have made to join themselves at the hip with donald trump. They decided this is not something that was thrust upon them. This is not cards that were dealt to them. This was their choice to go all in with donald trump. So much of what trump has done has been enabled by these members of the senate. I think what the Lincoln Project is saying, and its controversial even in the never trump movement. But i think what theyre saying is, look, if youre going to get rid of trump, you need to get rid of trumpism. These folks need to live with the decisions theyve made, the alliances theyve made and the things they have been silent about and what theyve enabled donald trump to do.
