Against the brady bill. Were not going to win these critical house and senate races if people in those races have to explain why the nominee of the Democratic Party is telling people to look at the bright side of the castro regime. I want to go now to our road warriors all across South Carolina. Shaquille brewster, let me start with you. Bernie took a lot of jobs on that debate stage. Who are than 30 by our count. How is he shaking it off this morning and looking beyond South Carolina and to super tuesday . Reporter they see last night was tough but nothing fundamentally changed last night. Today senator sanders is back on the campaign trail. Weve seen him have an event already. This was a state, an entire region where he didnt do well among black voters today he was making a direct appeal to black voters listen to that appeal earlier today. Racism is rampant in housing, in health care, in education, in Financial Services and my promise to you is that instead of dividing the American People up, which is what trump is doing, were going to bring people together and end every form of ugly racism that exists in this country. Reporter and those attacks, as you mentioned, they came in last night. They were not only on things like socialism he had to defend, it was about the price tag of many of his plans, many attacks that came in to senator sanders. Youre going to see him go not only South Carolina but beyond to the super tuesday states. Hell be in North Carolina later this week, virginia later this week, going to the state beyond, march 10th state of massachusetts. This is a campaign feeling good about their position. They feel like they still have the momentum from the contest and hes going to fin continue campaign. Were going to cross to joe bidens campaign, mike memoli is there. He just received the support of jim clyburn. He certainly had a few very energetic moments to say the least. We cant say it enough, a lot is riding on South Carolina for joe biden. How is the campaign feeling this morning . Reporter well, when you talked to biden advisers in iowa and new hampshire, in states already unfriendly to joe biden, just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong there. He knew if he had any chance of getting back on track and having a path to the nomination, just about everything needs to go right going forward. So far they feel like theyre in a strong position. He had a strong debate in nevada last week that set up a good second place finish for him in that caucus state. He had a good performance last night, not flawless but something that sets them up for success again here in South Carolina on saturday. Its also interesting to see how hes been framing this discussion. Last night very much squarely focused on issues of importance to the Africanamerican Community. He talked about issues like redlining and systemic economic inequality that affects africanamericans and talked about gun violence, making a reference they were having a debate stems away from the mother Emanual Church where there was that awful massacre. He turned his focus to President Trump. Lets take a listen. Sometimes i wake up and i think its 1920, not 2020. The way we wow. I really mean it. The way in which we talk to one another today, the way in which the debasing of politics has occurred, the way in which this president , trump, has so demeaned individuals and people. Reporter when we talk about South Carolina as joe bidens fire wall, africanamerican voters are really his fire walls. There was someone else on stage when he accepted an endorsement today, she represents texas and she was one of 19 endorsements joe biden has from the congress an black caucus he believes a strong finish here sends a message to those super tuesday states where there are significant black populations that he is the candidate that can best rally the Democratic Party across all owe coalitions teak on Bernie Sanders and donald trump. Youve been following the National Breakfast this morning. Pete buttigieg has struggled to gain some traction in South Carolina and nationally with africanamericans. How is he pressing ahead today snd. Essentially a year ago, he had to start from scratch by introducing himself to communities outside of the midwest. Thats why his trips so South Carolina and alabama have been notable, because he had to make such inroads and validate his reasoning for being in the race and earn trust. I want to let you hear from buttigieg at the National Breakfast. I am mindful of the fact that i will never know what it is like walking down a street or walking through a mall to feel eyes on me, assessing me, believing me to be dangerous without knowing the first thing about what im actually like just because of the color of my skin. Reporter this has been the tough part for the buttigieg campaign. They believed once voters go the to the know who he was theyd turn to him. Thats why his message has focused on humility, especially addressing black voters in the sta state. I was talking to reverend Roberta Bowen and she was telling me Bernie Sanders is not her guy. She believed that joe biden was trying to ride the coattails of barack obama and had lost some of his fire power. Thats what she mentioned Pete Buttigieg. She said she appreciates his youl and his calm, steady hand. At the same time who is she mostly to vote for on saturday over Pete Buttigieg . Top steyer, the individual who has spent more than 20 million in the state, she said shes been familiar with him over the last several years because of his efforts to impeach President Trump but also efforts to build up Grass Roots Organization and address climate chang. While Pete Buttigieg is trying to gain hold, he dealing also with the reality that tom steyer could be a story line out of South Carolina on saturday. Thank you so much for kicking this off for us. I want to bring in Jennifer Omalley dillon and deputy manager in 2012. Eddie, let me begin with you, if i may. We saw the democrats trying to go after Bernie Sanders, trying to blunt his momentum. The headline from political says it like this, bernie slayer fails to emerge at tuesday debate. It reads they all seemed more desperate and manic during their final primetime chants to make their case against sander. At the end it was clear there were no bernie slars at the lecterns. Should they realize it was a missed opportunity last night . They should realize it was a missed opportunity. Bernie sanders is the frontrunner now. Theres the natural expectation that he would, in some ways experience a different kind of intense vetting, that he would experience what he in some ways experienced last night. But then there was the other side of that. The other side was that there seemed to be a poll tex of fear that overwhelmed the debate, that many folk instead of talking about the differences about their between their policies, they were talking about the fact that Bernie Sanders was a democratic socialist. So they were red baiting. They were trying to scare people with the label of socialist, trying to motivate voters by way of fear. And when you try to motivate voters through fear, you lose sight of trying to motivate them through hope, vision and substance. It seems to me that democrats lost an opportunity last night by talking about substantive issue, but offering a bold and visionary pathway forward in the aftermath of this disaster that is the Trump Administration. Let me pick up that on point about the issue of hope and fear and the question begins did Bernie Sanders was he able to offer an alternative to candidates like Pete Buttigieg, who had been warning that a Bernie Sanders at the top of the ticket would affect down ballot candidates, make democrats lose control of the house . Did Bernie Sanders do enough to alleviate those concerns . Well, you know, i think last night was a tough environment for everyone that was on the debate stage because everyone really felt like they had to talk over each other in order to be heard. I think that is doing a disis of to the electorate both for saturday and also for super tuesday. I think when the value came for all the candidates was when they were talking about real issue. If hi to say what was the strongest points that bernie put forth, i think reminding people and Elizabeth Warren held helped with this, that his ideas, his platform he doesnt feel are radical and he believes he has a lot of support for. I think thats where he was strongest. I couldnt agree more. The more these candidates are able to talk about their vision, what they stand for, the kind of lead are theyre going to be, the better off theyre going to be in winning votes moving forward. You said to that point, your old boss beto orourke built his candidacy on trying to be a unifying person. Is it healthy or destructive for democrats to have a heated debate like the one we saw last night . Well, theres no doubt theres real deferences, in this ka pane and across has to youre so right, beto was a champion for this. I think a number of candidates that are running that are able to put together a Broad Coalition of support across the country and thats what its going to talk about and theres a lot of talk about Bernie Sanders and his ability to build a movement. Hes the frontrunner and shown great support but weve not seen the kind of turnout in this roar yoo we would expect in 2020 and that is South Carolinas a really important test for that to to show a muff more diverse electorate and help people look at these candidate he has struggled last night at the debate. This about peace between israel and the palestinians raised a few high brows. Watch. The only solution here is a twostate solution, the palestinians have to be accommodated. The real problem here is you have two groups of people, both of who think god gave them the same piece of land. The answer is to split it up, leave the israeli borders where they are, try to push them to pull back some of the extras on the other side of the wall where they built these new communities, they should not have done that, pull it back. Does his answer that and you hear someone off o camera yell out settlements and he doesnt use settlements. Does his criticism that he is not a democrat put its a line of attack we saw against bloomberg last night that he and that talking point was closer to a republicans than it was as a democrat. Absolutely. In some indicated he was sought of his depth talking about Foreign Policy. It cuts to something much more profound and that is the dignity and standing of the Palestinian People and the right of riz raceare so i think its important for us to really understand that bloom brg will no be the savior of the gak i want to say you have folks who are so afraid of Bernie Sanders, so afraid of Elizabeth Warren, so afraid of the progressives and theyre willing to say that if the Democratic Party nominates a progressive instead of someone like bloomberg or like Pete Buttigieg, that theyre going to give the presidency back to donald trump. Hes going to have a second term. And what theyre saying to me in that moment, ayman, is theyre nor comfortable with the white nationalists in the white house than they are with medicare for all, theyre more comfortable with a presidency content with putting babies in cages than they are about talking about a living wage. We have to be very, very clear about whatle not only did bloomberg demonstrate a lack of depth regarding china but he needs to be vetted accordingly. Thank you very much to eddie glaude and Jennifer Omalley. Coming up, a big moment for joe biden. Hes officially picked up the and his supporters are cheering his debate frms last night. Will it be enough to keep his fo foreand yet as fierce grow over the possible stred of it here in united states. He is insisting the country is in, quote, great shape. He said the country is in, quote, great shape. It is a different message than were hearing from federal Health Officials who just warned americans to prepare for the possibility of a pandemic. Geoff bennett is live at the white house. Ahead of his conference tonight the president has been tweeting about the coronavirus. This morning his view of the outbreak seems to be contradicted by some of the leading Health Experts in his own administration. Reporter good to see you. Its a case of mixed messaging from the white house as it relates to the threat posed by coronavirus. President trump doing what he can to try to reassure americans this virus poses little threat. He says its under control, he says its a problem thats going to go away. Thats a direct quote. Larry kudlow, his top economic adviser was in the Briefing Room yesterday trying to calm the markets. He said this is close to being airtight, yet you have the subject matter experts, government officials who study Infectious Diseases, top official at the cdc who says this outprabreak is a matter of when, not if it spreads here in the u. S. Public Health Experts make the point when it comes to situations like this, what the American Public needs is consistent factual information and this issue seems to be politicized. You have democrats attacking the white house, President Trump attacking those of us in the press, he says, for stoking fears. Hopefully at the 6 00 News Conference, the president sometimes uses News Conference loosely, well see what form it takes, but hopefully well get concrete details about how the administration is poised to handle this real threat. I think for any viewer or reader of basic news theyre probably wondering and they see so many issues through a political lens. Democrats on capitol hill have been going back and forth with the white house. Is the administration doing enough to combat this. Walk us through from what youve seen factually the administration do. What have they actually tried to do to curb this threat as it grows . Reporter so right now what theyre trying to do is properly fund the response. So you saw that request for 2. 5 billion, the Trump Administration making that request of congress. At least a billion dollars of that money would go toward Vaccine Development and stockpiling equipment like face masks and that sort of thing. But you saw Chuck Schumer today up the ant eshs mae, making the that 2. 5 billion is not enough. Hes written a request for 8. 5 billion. Well see how that works through the senate. An Infectious Disease specialist said the 2. 5 billion is just a down payment. He in his own way is making clear it is not enough to address the overall threat. Geoff bennett, thank you very much. I want to bring in the head of the u. S. Foreign Disaster Assistance during the Obama Administration and helped lead the u. S. Response to ebola and thank you very much for joining us this hour. Let me start with the big picture if i can for a moment. We were just hearing a little bit about it about what the administration is asking for and what they plan to do with that money. How would you rate the overall Trump Administration response to this Health Crisis so far . I think the messaging has been pretty messy. Yesterday was really bad in terms of messaging it was confusing and confusion in this sort of a scenario is the enemy of preparedness. I think the press conference this evening is a really critical opportunity to try to correct that, get that right, provide some credible messaging to the American People. Theyre in catch up mode at this point. Its been clear for at least several weeks this was likely to spread in the u. S. But the public rhetoric has only recently caught up to that. If you are still involved in government, what would you if you could tell the president anything, what would you tell him to say about what is happening with the coronavirus and our preparedness for it . There a few critical messages we need to hear from the president. The risk is real, this is not a hoax and it is likely to spread in the u. S. That is not too different from what weve been hearing from the cdc and Health Administration officials in recent days and here is what you can do to protect yourselves and reinforce listening to Public Health official ps. This is President Trump when asked about a possible vaccine for the coronavirus. Theres a very good chance youre not going to die. It very much the opposite. Youre talking about 1 or 2 whereas in the other case it was a virtual 100 . Now they have studied it, were very close to a vaccine. You really want to talk about realistic timing . It is likely that we will not have a vaccine available for deployment in a meaningful way in at least a year to a year and a half. To be clear, they dont seem to be on the same page about this but to also clarify the president i believe was talking about a vaccine from the ebola virus. But federal budget afteven afte ebola stage, but some think we will be able to deal with the coronavirus, as the president said, when the weather gets warmer. Almost everything the president said was incorrect and thats a real problem. We need the government to be properly informing the public. I think the a. G. Is in a tough spot trying to rectify what the president is saying. In terms of a country, Health Care Facilities and ability to transport people if we needed to put a city or town or facility under quarantine, are we prepared when you see the internal and legal challenges that are taking place about transporting patients from one state or county to the other. What i see right now is a bit of a leadership vacuum and a planning vacuum. We shouldnt be in a position where states are suing each other, where individuals from the state level or from congress are making individual appeals on behalf of their states to the president. That suggests the absence of a plan. We need a plan that the federal government needs to fill that vacuum and put something coherent on the table because we are going to face real risks. We have a Health System in this country that does not have a lot of Surge Capacity and is stretched to its limits by a bad flu season. This is a disease that is up to two times as tran missible as seasonal flu and roughly 20 til times as deadly from what weve seen from china. Thank you for joining us. I appreciate your information on this. Meanwhile, Companies Like apple, nike, United Airlines and mastercard have raised flags over it impact the outbreak could have on their earnings. And finally biden shows up to the debate stage just in time. Is it enough to pick up momentum going into super tuesday . And join brian williams, rachel maddow, joy reid and Steve Kornacki at the big board for our special coverage of the primary on saturday. Can i help you . Yes, please. Thank you. Youre welcome. And decreased infantmortality rates to historic lows. As president , hell build on obamacare, cap medical costs, and will always protect a womans right to choose. Mike bloomberg a record on Health Care Nobody can argue about. Mike im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. A new endorsement from the most influential democrat in South Carolina and a big debate performance could give the Biden Campaign a muchneeded boost today. Jim clyburn just made it official hes backing joe biden and thinks other voters in South Carolina should, too. I know joe. We know joe. But most importantly joe knows us. I can think of no one with the integri integrity, no one more committed to the fundamental principles to make this country what it is. Lets bring in Amanda Lovejoy and former executive director of the South Carolina party and zelina maxwell, an msnbc political analyst. Amanda, we were talking about this a little bit here in the commercial break. What does a clyburn endorsement really mean for the former Vice President in South Carolina . Do you think that that endorsement is going to get people to come out and say, you know what, if jim clyburn is saying joes the guy, im going with him . No question. He said in his speech this morning that he had voters asking him who he planned to support and he said he felt the people in South Carolina needed to know. It is boots on the ground, people on the ground and working for the candidate that he chooses. Having his support today will be instrumental over the next four case for joe biden in South Carolina. Let me pose that question to you. Is an endorsement from jim clyburn or anyone else, is a jim clyburn very important and can it change the outcome one way or another . I dont know if it can change the outcome. Until recently, joe biden was strong in South Carolina. If someone else had gotten it, that would have been an entirely different story. In politics an endorsement only goes so far, it can be an important cosign, important val days that that person can be trusted on a certain set of issues. In 2016 i remember there were certain influencers or celebrities or criminal justice Racial Justice advocates that endorsed Hillary Clinton and then would say we know that bill clinton did the crime bill, joe biden wrote the crime bill, bernie voted for the crime bill but she apologized it and she has laid out a path forward to curb some of the negative impacts of mass incarceration. I think the validateors can be important for a certain segment of the electorate, that doesnt mean its going to make the difference. You still have to get the people to the polls. To her point i think the critical piece here is going to be the gotv that he gets out of clyburns operation, his supporters, those who go to the polls. A lot of people heaping praise on the Vice President for his performance in the debate. He also made his pitch to black vote voters. Eive worked with the devil o earn the trust of the Africanamerican Community. I dont expect anything. Im here to earn the vote. But, folks, i intend to win South Carolina and i will win the africanamerican vote here in South Carolina. So biden has called South Carolina his fire wall, those of his words. Its not just about winning, though. Some are saying its about how much he wins by. He has to win convincingly. How much do you think he needs to win by to propel his campaign into bigger successes on tuesday and turn this thing around, like he said . I hate to put a number on it because we can argue one voter or 10 of the vote but i think whats important here is that joe biden will win South Carolina and he will win South Carolina handily. This is a candidate that doesnt just show up on election day or the week before election day. This is a man who has come to South Carolina for decades and has shown his support for the voters in the Democratic Party in South Carolina. Hes hosted fundraisers for county democratic parties in years that his support in those counties was irrelevant. He was come to South Carolina and endorsed candidates on the legislative level to the congressional level when his support to those people was irrelevant, he wasnt running for anything, he wasnt Vice President at the time. Thats what voters here in South Carolina remember. To quote jim clyburn from earlier this morning, we know joe and joe knows us. Thats what matters here. This is someone who has a decadeslong relationship with the voters in South Carolina. Thats why i think youll see a very, very successful win for him here on saturday. So to amandas point, the Vice President , he has had a successful record with africanamericans, but in the run up to the debate, hes been on the campaign and hes been saying this story about Nelson Mandela that the Washington Post fact checker has called ridiculous. Let me play it for you. Take a listen to the story. This day 30 years ago Nelson Mandela walked out of prison and entered into discussions about apartheid. I had the great honor of meeting him. I had the great honor of being arrested with our u. N. Ambassador on the streets trying to get to see him on robbins island. So as i said, the Washington Post fact checker said it was a ridiculous claim, there is no evidence he was ever arrested whatsoever. Why say that . Are these misstatements going to haunt him . Does it not make an impact what he says in those moments so long as he has an endorsement from jim clyburn . Why would you say that if your track record with the Africanamerican Community is so good . Good yequestion. You cant fake it till you make it with black people. We canny right through that, which is why some of these candidates in this race who talk about wanting to earn the africanamerican vote, who talk about wanting to reach out to these communities havent made any traction because when youre faking it, we can tell. When you dont have any black friends, we can tell. We can hear it when youre talking about our issues and you go first to criminal Justice Reform when asked what are you going to do for the black community as if every single black child is incarcerated. When you do that, its offensive, but only necessarily if youre aware of what it sounds like as a black person. And in order to do that, you actually need to interact with us, engage with us, be our friend and go to our churches and not just before the election. What do you have to say about that when you hear the Vice PresidentSay Something that is absolutely not correct . Why is he saying that . Reporter i read the statement from his campaign earlier this morning from that state and it seed like there was a misuse of a word, there was a story behind it about rg to go through the door he wanted to go in with his supporters. Its a track record weve been talking about. He has proven himself in and voters here will remember him for that track record and not for the misuse of a word in a campaign event. Thank you both for joining us this hour. Up next, deep state and russia hoax are just some of the terms the president has used to slam the Intelligence Community and its findings. Donald trump has had a problem from the beginning appointing political leaders to positions that actually reflect his Foreign Policy viewso you look at donald trump putting john bolton in there and they might have been completely discordant on Foreign Policy but he liked him on fox news. He gets rid of john bolton. I think the president should hire and fire as he please when is it comes to apolitical appointee. The trend with the career officials and rank and file Civil Servants who have expertise in national security, that is troubling. Administration employees want to say the state department is biased against us, the d. O. D. Is b biased in certain ways. Theres always bias but drath has taken it to a devastating point by firing anybody who is performing their job, doing their duties and telling the truth as their career expertise has trained them to could. I want to talk to you about the president meeting with indias prime minister. You have a president traveling and meeting with a president who is nationalist and yet he barley mentio barely mentions any of it. Muslims in are essentially being attacked and persecuted in these ongoing riots and the president makes no mention of it. The riots were the largest, i believe, in a couple of decades. Where he chose for his first state visit, saudi arabia. Human rights were not at the forefront of that visit and not this visit either. He admires authoritarians and ought democrats. Look at the heap he praised on kim jong un for killing his uncle. Theres been a need for a new trade deal with india and administrations have worked on it. I know the Trump Administration has devoted substantial effort but he didnt announce a new trade deal, which i had hoped would be at least deliverable. I remember when they would come to the middle east and say to the egyptian leaders and va you have to do more about human right and they would at least make that gesture. Here was the american president of india, this happening in the background, no mens of tion of whatsoever. Why wasnt Climate Change a key issue last night . Voters have been clear they care about Climate Change in huge numbers and its not just the democrats, a recent survey found that 64 of americans say protecting the environment should be a top priority. Three years ago, that number was just 38 . 2020 democrats debated in South Carolina last night, a city that flooded last year more than once a week. But climate issue was not even on the debate agenda. Cal perry just spoke to the mayor of charleston about the impact his city is seeing from Climate Change now. What are you learning about this . Reporter yeah, listen, thats the headline, 79 days last year this city flooded, it floods rain or shine and the reason for that is Charleston Harbor is rising. It has risen a foot in the last hundred years and the city is sinking into the sea. This sidewalk used to be even. Its now sinking which is why you have this 65 million project happening behind me. We asked the mayor what he thought of the debate last night. Take a listen. I am a little surprised. They got a little carried away with sniping at each other and i certainly was hopeful that they would have discussed Climate Change somewhat. I know they have in prior debates. But i was looking forward to hearing about it last night and didnt. We are on the front line of defense against sea level rising and extreme weather and Climate Change. No matter what the cause, we are having to deal with it. And thats why i call this an existential threat. This is our 350th birthday. I would like for charleston to be available for citizens to enjoy for generations to come, another 350 years. Reporter what were talking about are the houses behind me in historic charleston, whats become a boom business in this town is raising your house up. It costs 300,000 and people in this city are doing that. Thats the positive end of the story. The negative end is people who live on some of these outer islands, the houses are flooding, theyre unable to get the houses insured and theyre moving. Beyond that, were going to start seeing people who are leaving this area because of Climate Change if they cant keep the sea out of this city. The cost of that the mayor said some 2 billion is what hes going to ask the federal government for. Whether or not that money comes is another story. Let me ask you quickly, if you got a sense from being down there and speaking to voters as well as even the mayors, what do they want to hear from their politicians about Climate Policy . What do they want to see implemented from the federal government that could help some of these folks in these homes as well as on a, you know, political level from the mayor . Is it just money or is it something beyond that . Reporter the top priority is money, the top priority is building infrastructure, for example, the ground water thats underneath me is whats carrying all of the soil out to sea, putting money into these Infrastructure Projects so the situation stabilizes so peoples Property Values dont fall. We asked the owners of some of these houses, do you mind the construction . Of course they mind the construction. But its going to save the Property Value of my house. Thats whats important to people here. Thank you for that. Very important subject. Not enough attention in last nights debate.
