Reporter craig, bloomberg officials that i talked to were confident he would make the debate. He needed one more National Poll where he hit 10 or higher. As of this morning he has that poll. What they didnt expect is that he would have done quite so well. He has now leap frogged to second place in the National Polls according to this new survey out this morning with 19 , ahead of joe biden and the other candidates. And were hearing from the campaign from kevin sheekey, the Campaign Manager saying our campaign has seen a groundswell of support and qualifying for the debate is the liest sign that mikes plan and ability to dough feat trump is resonating with more and more americans. Its the first time hell be under that level of scrutiny from his fellow rivals kbl wh. What kind of debater is Michael Bloomberg . Any ideas based on previous mayoral debhaates what we can expect . We dont really know. Its been many years since hes been in this kind of a setting, since he had to campaign for mayor of new york. And we were with bloomberg last week in tennessee when he was starting to get questions about all of these various allegations that came up. And he was somewhat irritable as he had to defend himself on these various allegations. So we know that hes been working with his advisers this week to make sure that he is poised to give the kind of performance they feel he needs do to solidify his performance in the space and make sure earn kno everyone knows he up to the challenge. What on tap for the buttigieg campaign, Vaughn Hillyard . These debates are so important for him, especially with that chance to go one on one with Michael Bloomberg on that stage. He has two events in the greater Las Vegas Area before debate prep tomorrow night. This is more than about just nevada. This is more than about South Carolina a week and a half from now. Look what is happening. Literally two weeks from fod its super tuesday. On super tuesday half of the delegates will be allotted. Last night he was in Salt Lake City. I want you to listen to his message to a crowd of more than 4,500 that showed up for his rally in Salt Lake City last night. This is what it looks like to prove that there is no such thing as a permanently red state. For the buttigieg campaign, theres reason to be concerned about not only the National Polling figures but also the likes of here and South Carolina, and thats why if he can make that message to places like utah, just real fast, on two weeks from now, not only will it be utah, but you have colorado, maine, massachusetts, minnesota, north carolina, oklahoma, tennessee, texas, utah, vermont and virginia will all have their say over the course of the next two weeks, cra craig. 14 days from today. Thank you for reminding us. Shaq, Bernie Sanders so confident he up and went to Washington State. Reporter weve been receiving him all over, Washington State, colorado. Today hell focus on supporters, this is one of the 80 voting locations here in nevada, and there is some interest. Hell be going to these college campuses, university of nevada campuses here in reasno and las vegas. This campaign feels good about not only how they are doing here in nevada but how they are doing beyond, the states beyond. Listen to what sanders said at a rally yesterday. Trump and the Republican Party are getting nervous, and they should get nervous. And the democratic establishment is getting nervous, and they should get nervous. And i hear the establishment saying, oh, bernie cant win the election. Take a look at this crowd today and tell me we cant win the election and the interesting thing, that was one of his smaller crowds that weve seen over the past couple of days. He pulled in 11,000 in colorado on sunday, 17,000 in Washington State yesterday, as you mentioned. This campaign is also sharpening attacks against mayor Michael Bloomberg, senator sanders going after him on things like stop and frisk and his previous opposition to the minimum wage. The campaign is previewing those lines of attacks that theyre signaling theyre ready for. Ali vitali, i understand that Elizabeth Warren spoke exclusively to you ahead of tomorrow nights debate. Did you get a sense of the messaging she is going to be bringing with her to the stage . Reporter you know, craig, after the New Hampshire primary, several warren allies were telling me theyd hope theyd see her go back to her roolts a a fighter. We seen shes shied away from contrasting herself against opponents that goes right at them. I asked him about Bernie Sanders and the socalled bernie bros online after they went after Union Members here in las vegas that was critical of his medicare for all position. I want to play for you what Elizabeth Warren told me. Ive said before that we are all responsible for what our supporters do, and i think bernie has a lot of questions to answer here and i am particularly worried about what happened to the attacks on members of the Culinary Union, particularly on the women and leadership. That is not how we build an inclusive Democratic Party and it is not how we build donald trump. We do not build on a foundation of hate. So, craig, thats pretty direct in a way i havent seen Elizabeth Warren go at Bernie Sanders, maybe channelling what were going to see on the debate stage. We learned from New Hampshire when Amy Klobuchar had that pretty aggressive but Strong Performance on the debate stage that, catapulted her to third in New Hampshire or at least was a big part of why she has all this buzz and momentum coming in. Talking to supporters on the ground, there is a concern about the doubleedge sword that women candidates face on the debate stage when they show they can be aggressive. Thats something i asked Elizabeth Warren about. What she said to me last night felt a little different. She said to me this is something that women face all the time, youre either too much of this or too much of that. I sort of get the sense now coming into the debate stage as we enter this final stretch of the campaign that Elizabeth Warren is putting all of the other stuff to the side, shes going to go out there, make her case and not afraid to contrast herself hard against the rest of the field, even against someone like senator Bernie Sanders, who does occupy that socalled progressive lane with her, someone who weve been waiting to see how she would contrast herself with him. I think tomorrow night well see it on the debate stage. All right, Shaquille Oneal oneill haha, shaquille brewster, ali vitali, thank you to all of you. Jim, ive got a bit of news here. Bloomberg Campaign Official confirming shortly before the broadcast they are prepping the candidate for tomorrows debate with these people playing the roles of the other candidates. We got a full screen up for folks at home. Mark is Pete Buttigieg, marcia hale is klobuchar, Howard Wolfson is Bernie Sanders and julie wood is Elizabeth Warren. How are they getting ready for primetime . Youll talk about your leadership and talk about how youre the best candidate to beat donald trump. But for the first time in this campaign, Michael Bloomberg is going to face real fire from his competitors. And how he deals with that is an incredibly important moment because the country is kind of waiting to see what kind of candidate this guys going to be. And so in that prep session, theyre going to take after him with everything theyve got. Probably tougher things than hell actually see on the debate stage. So when he sees it, when bernie comes after him, when elizabeth takes her first shot at him, hes calm, collective and stays on message. Mayor bloombergs earlier history is he doesnt like this kind of criticism. Thats why the first debates are usually tough. Theyre going to go after him to get to a place where hes calm tomorrow night and doesnt want to take a swing at everyone who takes a shot at him. The other candidates havent been shy, especially recently in going after the billionaire former mayor. This is some of what Michael Bloomberg could hear tomorrow night. Now, mr. Bloomberg like anybody else whatshas a right t for president. He does not have the right to buy the presidency Michael Bloomberg worth 62 billion can buy every ad he wants but he cant in fact wipe away his record on everything from dealing with stop and frisk to his Foreign Policy assertions and the like. This is a time where voters are looking for a president who can lead us out of the day where it was just common place or accepted to have these kinds of sexist and discriminatory attitudes. Lets talk about the npr National Poll that game bloomberg the numbers to qualify for the event. It shows sanders and bloomberg leap frogging joe biden, bloomberg at 19 , biden at 15, warren at 12, klobuchar 9, everybody else at 2 or lower. It cover the spread between ble bloomberg and biden but thats a 15point jump for Michael Bloomberg. Do you see him as the candidate of the moment or is this a guy that has some lasting power . Well, i think were going to find out. The beatles were wrong, craig. Money can buy you love. But lots of candidates have gone up and then come right back down. So the question is i want to see mayor bloomberg take a shot. I want to see people really go after him, which is what youre going toi see tomorrow night an then well have a better sense of staying power. His ads by far are so far the best in the field. What makes the ads so good . First of all, they dont look like political ads. Second of all, theyre very focused on what hes done as mayor and the fact that he can beat trump. Theyre very on message. And i think the way hes used president obama is very smart. Theres people out there saying, ooh, has obama endorsed bloomberg . No, he hasnt but he has tens of millions in ads of his work with the president. And using obamas own voice in the ads. Exactly. You and i spent a year giving Vice President biden a little grief because he says obama before he says his own name, but i think the way bloomberg has used the president in hes ads is really smart and i think will continue to be very effective for him in the africanamerican community. No doubt that your former boss is watching this primary process very closely. Theres this new article in the new yorker that reads in part those around him are increasingly sure he will need to bring a prominent role in bringing the party back together, calming its tensions later this summer, including perhaps in milwaukee where the party ears me partys meeting is scheduled to be held in july. Hes committed to not letting his personal thoughts couple out directly or in any sense that could rock the party in the sthot retu short run and potentially undermine his ability to play this larger role in the months ahead. As this race intensifies, jim messina, do you think president obama will feel a need to speak out any sooner than that Democratic National convention this summer . Well, i hate these articles about people who say theyre close to him talking about what he thinks. Only barack obama knows what he thinks. He said privately and publicly hes going to be very involved in the general election. When it comes time to turning out democratic voters and talking about his legacy and the things that hes done. I also find it humorous lots of these candidates are saying we need obama involved, we need obama involved, but these same candidates were critical of obamacare and went after obamacare early in this race, which i always thought was a really stupid idea. The fact is barack obama is the most popular political figure in america, and when he wants to, and i think its probably around the Democratic National convention if i had to guess, hes going to make a very full case for whoever is the democratic candidate for president. You say barack obama is the most popular figure. I think Michelle Obama may have him edged out. I think thats fair. Of the candidates left in the field of the candidates that will be on that debate stage tomorrow night in las vegas, which one of those candidates most closely aligns si ideologically with barack obama . Thats a question i cant answer. A lot of these folks do. I dont think theres any sort of, you know, huge divisions with the possible exception of Bernie Sanders. Thats why i think youre seeing that so many obama supporters are all over the place in this primary. Jim messina, always good to have your insight and perspective, sir. With that, our hour live reminder that tomorrow nbc news and msnbc will be hosting that democrat being debate live from las vegas. But for you, one pill a day may provide symptom relief. Ask your doctor about xeljanz xr. An unjectionâ„¢. Weve got some breaking news from washington. A hearing with the judge overseeing the roger stone case has just wrapped up. Our justice correspondent Pete Williams is live outside that courthouse in washington. Pete, what happened . Reporter well, the judge is not going to delay the sentencing for roger stone, which is scheduled now for thursday morning. There was no discussion, surprisingly, today about the governments change in position after the attorney general intervened and ordered the government to file a new sentencing recommendation, a recommendation of a considerably lesser sentence. That was not the subject today. Instead judge Amy Berman Jackson wanted to ask about a defense motion for a new trial. This is the second time that roger stones lawyers have asked for a new trial based on what they say was juror bias. Now, the lawyers never objected to either of these two jurors during the trial, during the selection the jury selection process. The judge has already ruled on one of those motions and the only question today, the judge said, was whether she should delay the sentencing before making a decision on the second motion for a new trial. And what she basically said is after hearing from both the defense and the government, the defense objected to this and said she should resolve it first but what she basically said is lets go ahead with the sentencing. I will delay the execution of the sentence, in other words, after the sentencing is over, stone will not be required to report to prison and begin serving a sentence, if indeed there is a prison sentence, until she resolves this motion for a new trial based on an allegation of juror taint. So bottom line here, no discussion of the governments change in position on sentencing date, its still going to be thursday. A reminder for folks who have not been following this case as closely, what could roger stone be facing come thursday morning at this sentencing . Reporter well, the maximum is 20 years. Hes not going to face anything close to that. The government original live suggested seven to nine, and readvir readvir revised that to three to four and the governments guidelines are based on federal guidelines but those are advisory only. So its totally up to the judge. Pete, not to put you on the spot here, and you correct me if im wrong, this is the same judge that provided over the Paul Manafort hearingc. Based on that sentence, could we glean anything based on what roger stone might see coming you on thursday . Reporter with the understanding this is a total guess but an educated guess i think based on foundation youve laid here. Id say, yes, its very likely that he will face some prison time and id be surprised if its not at least three, maybe four years, as the government said in its revised sentencing recommendation. Our justice correspondent Pete Williams outside the courthouse there in washington. Pete, thanks as always, sir. Right now Harvey Weinsteins fate is in the hands of a jury here in new york city. They say there are, quote, two key objectives, equitably compensate victims who were harmed during scouting and continue to carry on its mission for years to come. Early voting started this past saturday, and according to the latest count, 26,000 people voted in the first two days alone. Its the first time the state has offered early voting ahead of the caucuses. Its even been a boone for employees on the Las Vegas Strip where polling stations were easily accessible, federal budget even in places like the blellageio. Lets go to Garrett Haake. Its the last day of early voting. We talked about this in the editorial meeting 26,000 sounds likes a lot of early voters, but we really dont have anything to compare it to. Anecdotally, is that a lot . Reporter it feels like a lot, craig. But youre right, this is the first time they have done early voting to go along with the caucus process. What we dont know yet and will know saturday is whether the 26,000 and whatever the final number end up being of early vote, how much thats people who would not have bothered to come out and caucus on a saturday afternoon and spend their saturday at a High School Gym or whatever the location may be. And how many of those are people who would have done it anyway and just wanted to get it out of the way. Early indications that well see an increase here in nevada. Something like 80,000 people who participated in total four years ago. If that early vote number continues to trend upwards, it fair to assume were seeing a bigger number overall. Yesterday the early voting site i was at had a long line, hundreds of people. Folks were telling me it was taking them sometimes three, three and a half hours to get through to vote early. That was on a monday holiday so more people had the time to spend, but it does seem like there is a lot of interest and im pleased to report the voters here seem much more confident in this process than do the campaigns. Heres some of the folks ive been talking to about this. Nevadas got this. Long lines, yes, but nevadas got this. Do you have confidence that the state party here can get through this process in nevada . I know that they very much want to, so i think that theyre putting everything they have into it. So i think its going to be okay. Four years from now do you think nevada still has a caucus . No, i dont. Reporter craig, Nevada Democrats watched what happened in iowa with horror. They wanted to make sure that did not happen here. They scrapped the app iowa was using, developing their own system. The volunteers expect to be trained as soon as theyre done with early voting on this new tool that theyre going to use on saturday. And everybody here is hoping their luck holds out for saturday when the caucus process starts. All eyes on nevada. Thank you, my friend, Garrett Haake for us in las vegas. With the clock ticking closer to those caulk uses on saturday, the candidates are banging king lastminute advertising and on a strong debate tomorrow to push them over the finish line. I want to turn to megan jones, she worried with harry reid for almost 20 years. And i also want to bring in eve thompson, the managing editor of the nevada independent. Let me start with a quick overview of the race here. Weve pulled a real clear politics average of the candidates in nevada. This is the average of polls in nevada. It shows Bernie Sanders in the lead there at 30 . Joe biden 16, Elizabeth Warren 14. 5, Pete Buttigieg 12. 5 and there you see tom steyer and Amy Klobuchar. We do not see a ton of polling out of nevada. Why is that . Why is nevada so hard to poll . Thats a great question, craig. I think nevadans are notoriously late deciders, i think thats part of it. I think that a caucus in general is really hard to pull in because, as garrett mentioned, 26,000 people showed up over early vote. Those folks have already decided. A couple of polls that came out in the last couple of days, some of those numbers already show that people have voted. Weve seen in the exit polls that 5 of people who have caucused already are firsttime caulk us goe caucusgoers. 56 firsttime caucus go ofgoers, wow. Tom steyer is spending wheelbarrow loads of money. In nevada alone he spent the most of all the candidates on advertising, some 14 million according to nbcs meet the press blog. That far outpaces his closest competitor, Bernie Sanders, who by our account is at around 2 million. Tom steyer seeing the money that hes putting in South Carolina translate into some movement in the polls, not so much in nevada. Why do you think that the Steyer Campaign isnt seeing the money make the same sort of impact there . Part of it is that Bernie Sanders had a leg up coming in because he did so well here last cycle, right . He was neck and neck with Hillary Clinton, very close at the end by voter count, bernie would have won the state, it was because of the delicate situation at the convention that Hillary Clinton ended up winning. So there was a lot to overcome there, to overtake an already very popular candidate in nevada. I want to add, though, in addition to those ads, tom steyer has been out in the rurals in nevada doing campaigning as late as this weekend. Hes been making time to connect with the voters and the voters weve been talking to at steyer events get energized by him and say theyre surprised at how compelling he was and theyre impressed. So he has moved up into double digits, both in the polling average and a recent poll that came out this week. It sounds like you think tom steyer might surprise some folks come saturday. Well, i dont know about that. You know, it looks like sanders and biden are top two according to the last two polls we saw. This week as well as the polling averag averages. But whats interesting is that it looks like what i would call the second tier candidates, its tightening. Weve got five or six candidates in double digits and for the reasons megan stated, because caucuses are so hard to poll, its possible that we could be surprised, maybe not by who wins but maybe whos in that second or third or fourth slot. We have seen debates really change the trajectory for some of these candidates like Amy Klobuchar, for instance. If you were advising one of these campaigns, what advice would you give them ahead of tomorrows debate in order to make a lastminute appeal to nevada voters who are still undecided . Sure. I would speak to the issues that nevadans care about. We care a lot about climate change. Were ground zero for some of the hottest temperatures rising in the last decade here both las vegas and reno. We are the site of the largest gun massacre in recent history. I would speak to what you are going to do on gun violence prevention. I would speak to those communities of color that are looking for a candidate to unite the obama coalition. I would speak to that electability issue. I think people are still, as weve seen in poll after poll, i think the only number that really has stayed consistent is this electability factor, who is going to beat trump overall, democrats in nevada want to beat trump and just like the rest of the country. So what is that candidate going to do to make sure theyre well positioned to beat trump. All right. Eve thompson, megan jones, few know nevada politics better. Thanks for your time. We have new reporting on this Tuesday Morning on this brewing faceoff between senator Lindsey Graham and the pentagon, the staunch trump ally telling the defense secretary he could, quote, make his life hell. A new exclusive nbc news report says the comments from the South Carolina senator came during a Tense Exchange with secretary of defense over the weekend at a conference in munich. It centers on a Trump Administration plan to withdraw u. S. Troops from part of africa. We joined now from her post at the pentagon. Walk us through this plan graham is so upset about, courtney. Its not yet a plan thats been a proved. Its a proposal. Its part of a larger review that mark esper is doing, to see where they can trim down resources. He wants to get the u. S. Military more in line with the Trump Administration defense strategy, that is focusing more on russia and china. So places like africa, south america, the middle east are ones that are getting a pretty strong look to see if they can bring troops out thereof, bring equipment and things so they can refocus to primarily to the pa sick ar pacific area. Theres about a thousand u. S. Troops of west and North Central africa known as the sahelle, a large strip of land that goes from the west coast to east coast of africa and encompasses rough territory, niger, malli. It would potentially bring many, if not all of those troops out of that area. Thats what senator graham and this bipartisan delegation, lawmaker delegation, thats what they were really pushing back on, is the idea of refocusing those troops, those resources from that area into another place, craig. How could senator graham make secretary espers life hell . What is he talking about . Reporter look, senator graham has a Good Relationship with President Trump. Theres no secret about it, hes one of his staunchest defenders, we saw that three impeachment and recent issues. But one place where senator graham has broken from the president is in troops. We had a very similar story to this at the same conference last year and that was senator Lindsey Graham giving espers predecessor, patrick shanahan, a hard time about the president withdrawing troops from syria. It was a very similar situation. This meeting was described as not quite as contentious or fiery as last year but overall it was the same idea, the notion that the u. S. Would be pulling troops out and at the same time betraying a number of allies. In this case the u. S. Military there supports the french in their Counter Terror missions in mali and throughout the region but also sports with intelligence sharing and training and what not. It was a similar argument that Lindsey Graham was making. Hes got the president s ear on a lot of these issues so he could push back hard and go to the president if he was against, it, craig. Lily, where is the line between drawing a contrast and going negative . I think there is no perfect answer to that question, but as long as youre keeping the contrast on the issues, i think youre on safe ground. Look, politics aint bean bag. Its supposed to be a competition. It should be lively. These debates are debates. When you get into trouble is when you start to question someones motivates and character. We had a lively primary in 2008 and it produced president barack obama, one of the greatest nominees our party has ever had. Elizabeth warren tweeting about Michael Bloomberg, this is the tweet from the senator from massachusetts, Michael Bloombergs expansion of stopandfrisk devastated black and brown communities for years. He used racist justifications to defend the practice and more comments are resurfacing. We need a nominee that voters can trust. First of all, does that cross the line . Is that doing the president s job for him or is that a Fair Assessment of Michael Bloombergs record on stopandfrisk. I think its for the voters to decide. If Michael Bloomberg cant answer questions about his record on stopandfrisk, then he shouldnt be the nominee. Every single candidate should hopefully through this primary process get better at answering not just questions about their record but what theyd actually do for the country. And so, again, as long as youre keeping it on the issues, this is a tough process, its supposed to be that way because were trying to get a battletested nominee who can take on trump in november. You think ultimately its going to be good for whoever the nominee is to have taken a few jabs from his or her friends on the debate stage . Look, its nothing compared to what we know were going to see from President Trump on the debate stage where hes willing to lie and distort and cheat. I think its good for the nominee to be prepared. But i also think that candidates in this process also as theyre exiting this process, when maybe it turns out theyre going to be the nominee, need to commit to working every day to elect the nominee of the Democratic Party. I want to play something quickly that joe biden said to our Nicolle Wallace on monday about reports of negative comments from sanders supporters specifically. I know youve seen whats been on line, the vicious, vicious threats and things theyve said, the misogynistic things theyve said referring to the women who are leaders of the Culinary Union and the things that theyve said about them and actually theyve received death threats. This is way, way this is trumplike. Way over the line. And i think bernie has to be he has to disavow this. He has to say, i disassociate. I dont want any of those people being with me. Can you imagine if my supporters did that, what you would be expecting of me . Quickly here, lily, can negativivity ever become an issue for the candidate . Absolutely, and i think it has become an issue for senator sanders and hes going to have to disavow those activities. No question about it. Lily adams, formerly with the Kamala Harris campaign.
