Polls shows its a dead heat in the tar heel state. If the democratic wins or actually even comes close, could it be a sign that the political winds staying at the partys back for 2020 . President trump won this district by 12 points in 2016. He had a bold message to voters there at a rally last night. Tomorrow is your chance to send a clear message to the americahating left, the radical democrats want to dismantle, demolish and destroy everything that youve gained, and they will do it and it wont take that long. Theres also a number thats flashing yellow for republicans, ready for the president s own reelection. According to a New Washington post abc news poll, his Approval Rating dropped six points in the last two months. Its now down to 38 . I want to bring in nbcs hanz nichols at the white house, dallas woodhouse, former executive director of the North Carolina republican party. As of yesterday, a visiting professor at tufts university. We or contractually obligated to refer to him as professor ryne news now. And ab b. Stoddard. Let me start with you at 1600 pennsylvania, hans, how much of that North Carolina rally, how much was about this special election . How much of it is about shoring up his own support . It was about driving out support. Look, the president last night was predicting victory. He seemed to be confident about that. Make no mistake. The white house is concerned about the special election and how do we know that . They not only send the president down, they also sent mike pence down, clearly trying to drive up turnout and get the base excited. The president did what was fairly standard, walked through a lot of the things hes been doing for the country, his stump speech. He had a few slight tweaks including this one where he almost seemed to be warning voters of North Carolina what would happen if they didnt support his man. Did you ever really sort of feel where you dont even have to treat people nicely. You dont have any choice, you have to vote for me. I can leave right now. I can say, North Carolina, ive had it with you, im leaving right now. You know what . Youve got to go out and vote. What are you going to do . Put one of these crazy people running our country again . Reporter a slight modification to the president s message there, he seemed to be focusing a little more on sanctuary cities, illegal immigration. That seemed to be, if there are any differences from what the president usually said, that seemed to be it last night. This is about optics, about landing the plane down there, Landing Air Force one and driving up enthusiasm so republicans can avoid what could potentially be an embarrassing defeat. Philippe, in the past youve pointed to this message of vote for me or else and youve called it powerful. Why . Because hes right to the people hes speaking to, that 38, 40, 44 , that range of polling that we see. They do see it as not having any choice. So its somewhat funny to watch him say it, but hes preaching to the kwoir. They do, in fact, have a choice. The problem he has is, look, everyone on this panel right now can make an argument that donald trump will lose next year or that he will win next year, but not if the economy tanks. The economy tanks, hes done. Its all over. Hes playing games on that front that other things he does is selfinflicted. Consumer confidence is a very shaky thing. If youve got 60 of americans who think were heading into a recession, theyre not so sure what theyll spend over the thanksgiving and christmas holidays. When consumers arent sure, businesses arent sure how much theyre going to make. He is introducing and injecting an element of uncertainty and volatility into the Financial Markets that are actually counterproductive to what he wants. Jpmorgan this week, introduced what they called, i believe, vol fef fay index to look at how his tweets affect the markets. Its not that he can singlehandedly bring on a recession, but he can sure scare people into thinking a recession is imminent. Dallas, today is a bit of a doover in North Carolina, the race pitting dan bishop against dan mccready because of that mailin ballot controversy. From a local perspective, dallas, how much does a rally like the one we saw last night, how much does it move the needle for republicans there . I actually think it moves the needle tremendously, more so than virtually any other type of president ial visit for a very simple reason. Last week we had a hurricane that hit the outer banks of North Carolina that filled a lot of the local television airwaves for a week. People of the ninth district have been seeing ads. Of course, we have a Second SpecialCongressional Election tomorrow, too, in the third congressional district, a heavily republican district. The big thing is the president did the most important thing that he needed to do last night and that was show up. Him showing up and on every television station is a reminder to Republican Voters who are concerned about the opening of College Football season and hurricanes and Everything Else that theres an actual election today. Were not used to voting a week after labor day. I think the visit is huge, just to remind our people, oh, i need to go vote tomorrow. That election ive been hearing something about, thats today. Is it, dallas, a layup for republicans today . What are you looking for . How close do you think this thing is going to be . Well, its about a fivepointplus republican district. In 2018 there was a sixpoint swing to the democrats, and that made the race virtually tied. My gut is that the new people moving into the district probably lean a little to the left, but that there are stim more Republican Voters, and i think the political environment is a little better for republicans. So i think dan mccready with the president s help will squeak it out in the end. I think it will be close. I also look, ive got to be hornest wi honest with you, i dont believe it has any larger meaning the the state. The democratic candidate has been running for two years. Ours has been running for three or four months. Its one district. Well win another district in North Carolina. It doesnt mean the president is going to lose North Carolina. It doesnt mean our candidate, dan bishop, couldnt turn around and win this in a year and three months when theres a normal election. Remember in 2018 North Carolina had a midterm election, what we call a blue moon election because we didnt have a governors race or senate race. 283,000 people voted in the ninth congressional district. We might get 50,000 in this one, and that would be a very high number. The vote a year and three months from now will be totally different. I dont think it has any larger meaning, other than its a race we very much want to win. A. B. , we showed this poll a few minutes ago, top of the broadcast looking at the president s Approval Rating, this is national li among 1,000 adults polled between september 2nd and september 5th, plus or minus 3. 5 percentage points. I give the margin of error there, but 38 , i dont care what kind of math youre doing, its pretty low and low for a president thats enjoyed historically low Approval Ratings. Youve also got 60 of americans right now, a. B. , and i think this is what felipe was alluding to, they think a recession is likely. How much of a vulnerability is that for this president s reelection . Well, the president has known all along that the Strong Economy was really carrying him and the protections youre afforded as an incumbent in terms of the infrastructure you have to campaign and his Strong Economy, his story on that, were really a good chance in the face of all his continued bad approval bolgs throughout his presidency, that that could carry him to reelection. Hes always known that. The first poll was just a few weeks ago showing his numbers were under water on the economy. The problem for him was that once before that weve seen, even when we saw numbers in the 70s of people approvaling the economy, a huge delta, sometimes 25 points to his Approval Rating which was often much lower. He really does dallas is right he needs to show up and tell people its me its a binary choice, me or a socialist or whatever he wants to talk about, immigration and uses fear and everything. Theyre watching the stock market jump up and down. Theyre hearing about the volatility. Frankly, i think the worst news for him in this polling, craig is that white noncollege women are turning away from the president. Why . Because their health care was not repealed and replaced. 2 million more americans are uninsured than last year. The tax cut was a bust for people at the bottom. That factory might not have moved back in their town. They might know someone in the supply chain affected by the tariff war. This is really a problem for the president. Can i jump in here real quick . Sure. I love a. B. s work. I read every column as soon as it comes out. Ive got to tell you. Theres just not a sign of recession in North Carolina and i dont believe you can say those tax cuts havent worked here. Dallas, with all due respect im not sure you can speak it would be difficult in north korea to run by saying the economy was terrible. The democrats would help bring down a democratic governor. Im not sure you can speak on behalf of all north carolinians. You look at some of the economic numbers, dallas, and its hard to dispute that the tax cuts that were passed by this administration havent really benefited folks at the bottom as much as theyve benefited folks on our screens right now. You cant dispute that. Africanamerican unemployment is a record low. Africanamerican unemployment was already on the decline. So was hispanic. Thats undeniable. Im just telling you i dont think thats the perception in North Carolina. I might be wrong. It was a national poll, too. North carolina is an important swing state. Thats my fish bowl, thats why i bring it up. Craig and dallas, North Carolina produces plenty that come november, december, consumers might not have the confidence that they can afford to buy. Just to echo everyone else, North Carolina is not the only 50 states in the union that is somehow exempt from an economic downturn or a lack of consumer confidence. I would also point out as someone who is from South Carolina that North Carolina, nah dallas, im kidding. Im joking. I vacation in South Carolina. Im a big fan. Were both carolinians at heart. Thats true. The fact that you just admitted on National Television that you vacation in the palmetto state, dont be surprised if you get a call from the chamber of commerce in South Carolina, my friend. Thanks everyone. Former National Security adviser Michael Flynn is back in court. The judge is set to schedule a sentencing date and also talk about flynns cooperation with prosecutors. A mid level russian official who reportedly became one of the cias most prized assets inside the kremlin has left russia and is now living in the United States. The New York Times reporting, as american officials began to realize russia was trying to sabotage the 2016 president ial election, the informant became one of the cias most important and highly protected assets. The moscow informant was instrumental to the cias most explosive conclusion about russias interference campaign, that president Vladimir Putin himself ordered and orchestrated it. Lengths break it down with net price, msnbc National Security analyst, also foshler special assistant to president obama who worked as a cia counterterrorism analyst. And evan mcmullen, former cia operative and former 2016 independent president ial candidate as well. Thank you so much for your time. Ill start with you, ned. How important was this official to the u. S. Intelligence effort on russia and its interference in our elections . Craig, i wouldnt want to speculate on the identity of this individual for obvious reasons. I think what we do know from some of the reporting thats been out there is that the cia has had at least one high level intelligence source in russia who may well have weighed in on the 2016 assessment that was released publicly in january of 2017 regarding russia and Vladimir Putin in particulars efforts to denigrate hillary clinton. We have to understand how difficult it is for the cia or for any Foreign Intelligence Service really to recruit a source in a place like russia, a place that is almost entirely wired, a place where the Intelligence Service has almost essentially free reign. If these reports of a senior russian official, even one recruited as a mid level source are accurate, i think that speaks to a tremendous intelligence victory on the part of the cia. If the reports of his exfiltration are true, i think that points to a tactical victory, that he was successfully removed in danger, but a strategic loss, a strategic loss for us over time as we will lose those insights that a source presumably in the russian government may have provided. Evan, how do officials like this, how do they find their way to the cia or other intelligence agencies. Whats in it for them . Well, it happens in various different ways. Sometimes, as you put it, they do find the cia or other Intelligence Services themselves. Sometimes Intelligence Services find them. So it can work both ways. Why they do what they do, there are so many reasons. In some cases theyre ideological motivated. In the case of the United States and i can speak from my own experience, some people want to work with us overseas because they believe in the ideals of the United States of america. So far as were committed to them, when were committed to them, theyre inspired by that. They want to be a part of that. They believe in democracy and freedom. They want it for themselves, they want america to remain strong in that regard. A volunteer motivated for those altruistic reasons. In other cases and in combination with that there could be other motivations. They may have been mistreated at work by their own government or maybe their family was, someone was abused or imprisoned unjustly or Something Like that, someone was passed over for promotion. It can be Little Things like that. They may have financial needs. There are a variety of reasons. They may have a very strong ego and that motivates them to take that kind of action. Theres really a full spectrum of motivations. Usually its more complicated than just one motivation. Usually there are various motivations, and its the job of the intelligence officer, in this case the cia officer or officers who are knowledgeable, in running this case and managing this source, this asset, its their job to understand exactly what is motivating this person and to manage the operation consistently with that knowledge. The russians have acknowledged that theres an official that left the country and been seen here in the United States. Nbc news reporting hes now living in the washington, d. C. Area. One of our reporters knocked on the door there. How safe is this individual, ned, with a guy that seems to have so much knowledge about the russian government . Well, frankly, craig, i think hes much less safe now, and that is the danger in all of this. Whenever there is even an inkling of a former source, whether its true or not that is put out in the public domain, its usually almost always a matter of time before that information snowballs into the revelation of an identity. Of course, we cant trust everything the russians have said. Theres another reported case of a defector in florida whom the russians said was deceased, apparently in an effort really to suggest that he was no longer a threat to the Russian Federation when, in fact, it has been reported that he is alive and well. I think clearly we cant take everything the russians say at face value. But i think theres a broader point here. Every time the cia enters into a clandestine relationship with a human intelligence source, they enter into a contract, usually a literal contract. The cia says well go to extraordinary lengths to protect your identity, even resettlement, in return for you essentially conducting betraying your country or your group or your whatever the organization is. In this case unfortunately it will send a chilling signal, i think, to potential recruits around the world who are now doubting our ability to protect the identity of those incredibly precious human assets. Ned price, evan mcmullin, a big thanks to both of you. 2020 democratic contenders trying something different. Rather than debating their differences, theyre showcasing what unites them. Right now the 2020 democratic contenders are getting ready to detail their differences on the debate stage. But first, a rare moment of unity. Many of them are highlighting what binds them, speaking with one voice saying our kids deserve to be safe at school. We have accepted the ahn acceptable for too long. Were going to stand up and were going to fight. Insist, demand, use the strongest possible terms. Push and push and push. With every fiber in our being. With the urgency and the solutions. So that parents and teachers and kids dont have to worry about this. The time has now come. Doing nothing is not acceptable. Im joined by axios political reporter a. M. Alexi mccam mon, also felipe is back with me. This seems like a fairly unique moment saying many of the 2020 democrats speak with one voice on an issue they largely agree on. Whats this about . First of all, i got the chills watching that. Its a great ad and its such great symbolism about how united our candidates and our party is about gun control. Now, unfortunately theres no similar video from republicans in the senate which is where we really need things to go, and most importantly from donald trump himself. Whats very sad about this moment is weve been through this a number of times in the last few years. There really is bipartisan support, now not for anything huge, not for tremendous gun control, but at least for Something Liken hansed background checks. Its not often that someone im not defending Mitch Mcconnell or john thune or the Republican Senate leadership, but its not often that they are open to doing something. All they need is for donald trump to snap his fingers and everyone is holding their breath to see if he will. I can tell you right now he wont. He wont because he hasnt done it any of the previous half dozen opportunities he could have. He just is so afraid of antagonizing the nra and his base that he believes will make the argument that any kind of gun control is a slippery slope. As we saw a couple weeks ago, all he needs is wayne lapier to do is get on the phone and the president of the nra tells him he doesnt like something and thats sad. This is a moment where something no matter how sad could be done and it probably won. Alexi, as felipe knows well, democrats werent unified going into the election in 2016. It hurt hillary clinton. How much of this is an opportunity for democrats to show, not only the country but their base that they may have more in common than a lot of folks realize . This is certainly an issue where its harder to divide the Democratic Party on where they stand compared to Something Like medicare for all. That video certainly is another example of how democrats are unified on the issue of gun safety. In past president ial elections there have been zero or single digit president ial candidates that talked about gun safety in their launch videos. This year, 14 of the Democratic Candidates mentioned gun safety in their launch videos and speeches. Thats a significant change compared to the politics of the past. It shows the ways in which they are united. I think that speaks directly to this base of voters, especially Younger Voters who rank gufr gun safety and gun control as the top issue on their list when they think about whether and how theyll vote in 2020. I think its an Important Message for democrats to send not just on the campaign trail but like the videos through giffords. Its fine and weld to talk about those things when youre running for president , but especially if youre a senator, krerchtly in the senate as youre running for senate, you should be pushing republicans to do something more on this issue whether or not President Trump will support it. Theres a foksz news poll that shows 43 of americans believe congress will not do anything to get something done on gun safety. Thats a problem that democrats have to address as well. I didnt realize 14 candidates mentioned it in their launch videos. Your latest reporting, alexi, takes us inside the democrats 2020 war room. What are you learning about how the party plans to take on the president once its time for a general election . The drkszncs Research Team is one of the most sophisticated Research Teams ive been taken into through talking to various sources familiar with their operations. They have Something Like thousands of lawsuits filed against President Trump and then citizen trump throughout his career, his lifetime, from nearly 50 states. Theyre monitoring local cable channels and interviews with folks like farmers and truckers in these various battleground states like nevada, colorado, arizona, texas, talking with local reporters about how theyre disappointed in the president and the things he said about the agriculture industry or the trade wars and how its hurting them at work or the future of their jobs and their wages. Theyre doing all these things at the ground level to define trump in a hyper local way rather than just saying things like, oh, he has all these broken promises he made in 2016 to get your vote and hi hasnt kept up with them. Theyre showing exactly what trump promised and exactly what happened to the contrary of those things since 2016, and especially to define him in a way saying the same little guy and gal he fought for and compared for in 2016 he hasnt been fighting for as president and here is how. Thats an interesting strategy theyre trying to do at the dnc that other democratic groups in these various states will try to identify as well. Right now as were having this conversation, hasan minaj host of patriot act isnt telling jokes. Hes testifying before congress and testifying on student debt in this counted. Hes a first generation Indian American muslim, speaking the the Financial Services committee. He has injected some humor in his message there. His show did an investigation into the debt crisis and hes talking about what he learned. Chairwoman waters invited me because i host a political comedy show on netflix called patriot act which means i may owe some of you royalties. Im 33. Growing up it was drilled into our heads, youve got to go to college if you want a middle class job. We tell kids today, if you dont go to college, you might as well get a face tattoo. We know the deck is stacked against student borrowers in ways that it wasnt 10 or even 15 years ago. They deserve some basic protections. Americans should not have to go bankrupt pursuing higher ed kagsz and should never be preyed upon by underregulated Loan Servicing companies. Members of this committee, we know if government is capable of stepping in during a financial crisis. So really all im asking today is why cant we treat our student borrowers the way we treat our banks. The United States is estimated to have more than 1. 5 trillion of outstanding debt averaging roughly 3,0000,000 a person. Hes written books, worked on successful tv shows. Hes walking away and not going quietly. Walter mosslys decision is raising new questions about the uses of the n word and who gets to say it. Ill talk with 4i78 about it next. As we mark world Suicide Prevention day, were taking a look at the fight against an alarming trend, the growing number of Police Officers dying by suicide. Its almost to the point of a physical pain, but its very mentallike pain, and i just felt overwhelmed. I didnt feel like i could cope. Giving back. Subaru and our retailers have given over one hundred and sixtyfive Million Dollars to charity. We call it our love promise. And its why you dont even have to own a subaru to love a subaru retailer. Subaru. More than a car company. Walter mosley, one of americas most prolific writers has quit his job on a successful tv show after being criticized for using the nword in the writers room. The Hollywood Reporter wrote mosley walked away from the latest staffer trek series after the incident. Mosley, the writer of mover than 40 novels is best known for his gritty portrayaling of the criminal underbelly of los angeles through his character easy rollins, a black private detective. Mosley penned an oped in the New York Times explaining his decision to leave. He joins me now. Mr. Mosley, thank you for your time, sir. Youre welcome. Nice to be here. I know you got called into Human Resources over your use of the n word, not a word we use on this program. Tell us how it all unfolded. I said i got stopped by a policeman in los angeles and that policeman, after he searched me and did all this other stuff this was years ago. He said well, we dont use that on this show. He said, well, i stop n in paddy neighborhoods and paddys in n neighborhoods. We were talking about es experiences we had with the police. The next day i get a call from hr. You used that word. I said, yeah, i am that word. And they said you cant use that word in the room. You cant write it in the script and cant say it in the room. There are other words where we might fire you like that. I went, wow, this is so awful. Its bad in a writers room because you have to be creative, be able to talk, be open and loose. But i think its bad anywhere, you want to stop somebody from being able to express themselves. I mean they shouldnt bully people, shouldnt insult people. Theres things you cant do. Right. Also, i think hr is wrong. You wrote in this oped and i would encourage everyone to read the oped, but you wrote in part, the part that stuck out to me, there i was being chastised for criticizing the word that oppressed me and mine for centuries. As far as i know the word is in the dictionary. As far as i know, the constitution and declaration of independence assure me of both the freedom of speech and the pursuit of happiness. How can i exercise these freedoms when my place of employment tells me that my job is on the line if i say a word that makes somebody, an unknown person, uncomfortable. You chose to quit. Why quit . Well, i could no longer do my job, to begin with. If im in the room thinking what did i say, how did i say it, who did i just touch, if thats the way im going to be guided by these kind of mccarthistic whistleblowers, snitchers, i said i cant do it, so i have to leave. That was the first decision. Over time i was talking to friends about it and said i should write an oped piece. Really its true. A lot of people cant quit. Ive gotten lots of emails from friends and other people who said that happened to me but i couldnt quit because i had to pay my rent. I already have my rent paid, so its okay. One of the things that also stood out to me. I dont know if youve seen the Dave Chappelle special on netflix, this is a topic that dave tackles as well. The nword while certainly not used in polite company, it is widely used in entertainment. Chappelle goes on and on to talk about it in that special that i just referenced. What makes some usage acceptable and other usage not acceptable . Well, i think the only language that one has to really question and have some control over is when youre bullying somebody, when youre harassing somebody, when youre insulting somebody, like on purpose, when youre attacking. But thats really it. Other than that, people use language. I might be really upset by somebody, some socalled race of people saying something and it might make me mad and upset. Im never going the turn around and say, well, that person, we have to pass a law against them using that language. Also in that piece i talk about the confederate flag. Thats not really my favorite thing. But when people say we have to make that illegal, i said no,out cant make anything illegal because we all have the right to express ourselves. If you take that freedom away from one person, you take it away from everyone. Mr. Mosley, a clean black writer who was brought in to lend a certain voice, if you cant use the nword in retelling a story, what does that say about where we are right now as a society . Well, you know, listen. What it means is the people who are way up and in charge are protecting themselves from things that might be bad. They might get sued. I dont think anybody is actually worried about any language i use or that anybody else uses. I think its really its another thing, were protecting ourselves from something way over there. Theyre not protecting me. Theyre protecting them. Theyre not protecting people in my room, theyre protecting them. Walter mosley, thank you, sir. Thanks for your time. Appreciate it. Me, too.
