Will the pressure make a difference . And more families torn apart after 700 undocumented workers were swept up in a massive i. C. E. Operation in mississippi. Many had their children were left without their parents. What were learning about those raids today. But we begin with a nation still in mourning, everybody, and clambering for answers after the shootings over the weekend in el paso and dayton that killed 31 people and wounded dozens of others. Wednesday was supposed to be a day of reflection and dedication as President Trump made visits to both cities meeting with victims and First Responders. But the day took on a very political tone, to say the least, with pointed speeches from democratic president ial candidates critical with what they see as the dangers of the president s rhetoric and his tone. As the Washington Post reports, cory booker and joe biden were the latest Democratic Candidates to offer a mix of solace and policy in the aftermath of the massacres trying to show what kind of leader they would be for the nation and to create a contrast with trumps divisiveness. Details now from gaudy shorts in el paso, texas, and kelley odonnell. Kelly, we saw the president s reaction yesterday to the criticism from the democrats. What are we hearing today . Well there are has been a quiet day so far, the president using twitter only to talk about his frustrations with the Federal Reserve on monetary policy. The president has yet to weigh in any further on this issue, although we are looking for any signs of how he might take next steps when it comes to any new policy concerning gun violence or new steps on background checks. He has signaled a willness ingno want to do something dramatic in new policy in response to this. He has talked about that in the past and it hasnt happened. He has said he believes that there is room now between both democrats and republicans to take action, but will it happen . After the Las Vegas Concert shooting that was so deadly, he did take action on bump stocks that altered the ability of a weapon to fire rapidly that. Did come to pass. But when it comes to his involvement with the nra, we know that the president has spoken with the National Rifle association and they have a position against some of these background checks. The president has said he believes even the nra could possibly go forward with this. Thats very questionable in the public sphere. So what happens now . There are calls politically for the president to encourage congress to come back during its renecessa recess in august, that seems unlikely without a specific set of actions to vote on. And although there are differing bills, there doesnt seem to be any consensus on the steps they would take. So it seems more likely they will use this time to send in their home districts and states talking about this issue and when will the president make his next move . Will he be the one to lead on a specific piece of legislation or a specific idea . Will he invite people in to talk about these ideas . We dont yet know. And certainly after going to ohio and el paso has had a chance to meet people affected by this very directly in person. And the real question now is after expressing a willingness, will that desire do something dissipate or will the president galvanize behind that emotion and the desire to see something and be the president who gets it done . Those are the questions today. We saw that even while he was trying to comfort and greet and thank those who responded to these tragedies, he did engage, as so he often does, in the politics of the day thrashing about on twitter with ohiobased lawmakers and the local mayor in dayton frustrated by some of their comments. Yasmin. And i think it has a lot of people asking, kelly, if in fact the trip for the president has inspired him to act in the coming month. But well have to wait and see on that. I want to go to gaudy whos standing by in el paso for us. What are we seeing there today on the ground . What has been the reaction so far to the president s visit . Reporter well, a lot of people here in el paso seem to think that yesterdays visit by the president was a photo op. There were many people that were asking for the president not to come. In fact, early on we saw people protesting the president s visit. There was a crowd of about 200, 300 that were right across from the hospital where the president came. They were chanting send him back, send him back. They were Holding Signs asking the president to tone down the racist rhetoric. And then there were some Trump Supporters that were lining that motorcade route that were out to try to show the president their support. But its been very difficult because tensions have been high here in el paso. This is a town of over 80 hispanic there. There is a small base of Trump Supporters. About 25 voted for President Trump during the last election. But yesterday we saw ugly spats as one woman came down here wearing a magazine ago h hat an immediately engaged with with people trying to mourn. I want to show you this memorial for 22 people where weve got candles and mementos representing all of these different victims. The 15yearold javier rodriguez, a soccer ball signed by many of his friends. Here we have a sign, im going to show you there is directly to the trump. [ speaking Foreign Language ] please, no more acts of racism, acts of eight, acts of terrorism. [ speaking Foreign Language ] we are three little girls of american citizenship. Our parents are mexicans and we have fear to go outside. We hope you read this, mr. President. May god bless you. Thats just one of the sentiments were seeing here. But many people feel in el paso that they were basically taken advantage of by that trip yesterday by the president. Gaudy, quickly if youve had an opportunity to speak to the people on the ground there, what type of policy changes, if any, do they want to see happen in washington . Reporter well, there are a lot of sipes that agns that are of an assault weapons ban and some sort of gun control. Youve got to take into consideration that this is texas. So while there are calls for gun control and gun reform, there is still a very strong sentiment that people want and respect the second amendment, want the right to bear arms, and it just has to do with how to limit assault weapons and such. All right. Gaudy schwartz, kelly odonnell, thank you both. Appreciate it. Want to bring in phil philip rucker, anna palmer, and tiffany cross, from the beat. Phil, im going to start with you on this one. It was just monday when the president said, and i quote, now is the time to set destructive partisanship aside. When did that fall apart . The president s been zigzagging back and forth all week between those words he read from the teleprompter calling for unity and his inner desire to be a part of this political combat. Weve seen him on twitter all day yesterday in between these visits with victims and their families and First Responders attacking people, attacking the mayor of dayton, attacking the senior senator of ohio, attacking the former Vice President , attacking former congressman beto orourke of el paso and so forth. And it continued, by the way, all the way until he got home around midnight when he went after a colleague at this network. And so, you know, hes clearly not trying to do the sort of healer consorl chi healer consoler chief role. Hes going through some of the motion because hes doing this political combat which is what weve come to expect and has become a hallmark of his presidency. And then you have the headline saying trumps his own worst political enemy after tragedy. Is this is this president going to pay a political price for what happened last weekend . I think its up clenclear ri now in the is sort in his playbook of how he has handled these major crises. He cant stay on message is. But its not that his political opponents in ohio or texas were attacking him yesterday. You actually saw the mayor of dayton and senator Sherrod Brown meeting with him and trying to kind of go through the motions that typically happen after a shooting, after a crisis in a home state when the president comes there. And its pretty stunning, frankly, because he just continues to hurt himself and really cant get away from the political daytoday hitting back, punching back on twitter. I think the real question is going to be how does this issue play over the summer in august back when all these members of congress are back home . Do they actually do anything and can this be a galvanizing issue for democrats in the 2020 election . So, phil, i quickly want to touch on the president s role as consoler and chief and how comfortable he is actually in that role. Because part of being a president , as we well know, is being empathetic and a lot of voters look for president s to have empathy as one of their characteristics. Is this president comfortable in that royal le as consoler and c . He has not been historically over the last three years and weve seen it in different kinds of crises, not only in shootings but other natural disasters. He has difficulty projecting empathy and hitting these notes of unity. When he goes to places for Mass Shootings, he tends to vis witness First Responders as opposed to with the victims in part because think he feels so much more comfortable around Police Officers and firefighters and people wearing the uniform as opposed to those who suffered human tragedy and the survivors of loved ones. Tiffany, lets talk about what some of the 2020 democratic contenders were doing yesterday. They came on pretty strong yesterday, to say the least, about the president and how, in their view, he has emboldened white supremacists. Take a listen to this. We have a president with a toxic tongue whos publicly and u. N. Apologetically embraced the political strategy of hate, racism, and division. It was sold from the highest office in our land where we see in tweets and rhetoric hateful words that ultimately endanger the lives of people in our country. People of color, immigrants. Is the president a white supremacist . He is. Hes also made that very clear. Hes dehumanized or sought to dehuman nize who do not look like or pray like the majority here in this country. Theres conversation obviously from the 2020 president ial candidates where theyre fighting for the soul of this country. And we heard that from joe biden from the get go when he announced he was going to be running for president. Tiffany, do you think this is the right path . So to call out the president for his rhetoric, but also to follow up with Offering Solutions . Do these candidates now need to follow up with Offering Solutions . Because weve heard concruise solutions on gun control legislation from cory booker but not from joe biden or beto. Yeah, so i think first this is not something new. So its interesting to watch people kind of be surprised at this president s behavior. If nothing else hes very consistent in the is the type of receiptic rhetoric he kicked off his campaign with. The rhetoric is not as dangerous as the po policy. I think when you have the candidates come out and combat these things with their language to say this not acceptable, thats what people want to see. How will you handle yourself on a stage with donald trump. Again, theyre speaking to people who already recognize donald trump as a white supremacist, so i do wonder what it will take for people to stop asking those questions, thats been asked and answered. In terms of policy, mayor Pete Buttigieg announced his Gun Legislation. I think youll see something in the coming days from joe biden. And cory booker has released legislation like this on capitol hill over the past couple of years in the is something democrats have been far ahead of the curve on. Its not new. As important as policy is, i think we have to follow the people that dont follow the minutia like all of us and the first tep is to costep is it co say this is not acceptable. And thats the things that will resonate first with voters before they get into the policy and sufficient that those of us on this panel are studying. How do you turn that into something tangible . Think its going to be really difficult, to be honest. I know its not the answer that people want to hear. But right now i dont think theres going to be a massive gun control legislation. Theres no momentum in august to get anything done. The further it gets away from a tragedy like. Hard ter is harder it is to find momentum. There may be some things done on the margins but right now the Senate Majority republicans are unable to take up some of these more expansive, legislative potential fixes. So, phil, the gop and the nra have both been joined at the hip for decades. Your colleagues at the post are reporting this. Wayne lapierre spoke with trump on tuesday after the president expressed support for a background check bill and told him it would not be popular among trumps supporters. It goes on. A white house official said trump asked some advisers and lawmakers this week before about before the nra had enduring clout amid ann attorneyship battle and allegations of improper spending. What im gregt thetting from th could this signal the president is beginning to step away from the nra and make moves on Gun Legislation, even if the nra doesnt st doesnt support it because he feels theyre losing clout in washington . Its certainly a plausible theory of what could be happening. I would hesitate to predict just because this is a president who often acts or impulse and i would not want to get ahead of where hes going. But if he were to come out and call for background checks, for example, that kind of president ial leadership could provide the momentum that anna was just talking about. And if the president really forcefully add video indicated for this, i would assume that at least a few republican senators would get in line behind him and it could potentially be enough to push that over the finish line. Remember, background checks is very popular with the general public. It nearly became law during the obama presidency. Its not quite as significant a hurdle as an assault weapons ban, for example. And so well have to see what the president ends up doing. But he certainly is feeling the sort of popular pressure in the media and from the local officials that he was talking to on the ground in ohio and texas yesterday. And if the president gets behind this and it pushes republicans can i go ahead, tiffany got ahead. I just want to add that the nra spent 30 million on this president s election in 2016. And, this is something thats going to happen have to resonate with the republican base. When you look at who makes up that base, they purport to be these all lives matter candidates, these quote unquote pro life people. And you do wonder where does that fall when you have the loss of life attributed to gun violence . Mitch mcconnil nel himself got over a Million Dollars just this year or over his tenure from the nra. So even though the public may not be with that legislation, the nra is still a powerful lobby and disproportionately republicans are also willing to accept their money. Thats why its important to listen to the words the Washington Post used in describing what Wayne Lapierre described to the president , your supporters will not support background checks, he didnt say the nra, he said your supporters because he knows the terminology that resinates directly with the president. Phil rucker, anna palmer, tiffany ross, thank you all. Appreciate it. Coming up , will he act . The chorus of voices telling Mitch Mcconnell to take on Gun Legislation and bring the senate back from recess. Can he continue toying nor the grow pressure. Senate majority leader Mitch Mcconnell continues to ignore calls to end the senates fiveweek long august renecessary order to hold a vote on a bill passed by the house that would expand background checks. Despite this weekends tragic Mass Shootings in el paso and dayton, it is unlikely he will bring back lawmakers. Republicans on capitol hill have no reason to believe that mcconnell who is home resting from a fall would call the senate back into session. He has opposed legislation in the aftermath of every previous mass shooting. Joining me now, hans nichols who is in louisville, kentucky, for us, Mitch Mcconnells home state and platco senipolitico seniod msnbc analyst. Hans, do mcconnells constituents want stronger gun measures . Reporter well, its hard to say, right . It seems like attitudes are shifting ever so slightly, but there isnt a fundamental change in thinking here. Were here, as you mentioned, because we want to talk to voters in mcconnells own state. If mcconnell is going to move on guns its because he reads his state, he reads his country, he reads his ability to hold on to powers, has something do with taking action on guns. So we just spoke to a young woman wheer say trump support, he are mcconnell supporter and she says you need background checks. I dont think its the guns that are the problem, its the people who were going to allow guns to be so easily accessible, we need to make sure more effort is being put into the people rather that theyre mentally capable and that theyre responsibility. You cant really blame the weapon because i think i saw in the news there was a stabbing the otherd day. Maybe stricter gun laws, not just letting anyone have them. Reporter so obviously we talked to two phlegm, gentleman and a young woman. But i think when you look at what Mitch Mcconnell said, its been mostly silence. He had that statement on monday where he said its up to the president to take action. And well see if he changes his opinion here and comes occupaut says anything. The two house bills that he was talking about, President Trump issued veto threats. So it would require mcconnell and troufrp reverse their position on that to get action on background checks. Red flag situation seems much more likely. Jake, youve got more than 200 House Democrats sending a letter to mcconnell urging him to bring the senate back from recess. Today you had 200 mayors also surging the senate to return for a gun bill vote. What is it going to take here, jake, and what other times has the senate been called back from recess . Well, ill start from the top there. Its going to take the president taking a position, a position that he holds for more than 30 seconds or more than just a trip to the helicopter en route out of washington. He needs to say, i am for this background check bill. I am for background checks. And Congress Needs to pass it now. Thats number one. Number two, as a lot of people have pointed out, this background check gil bill that the house hpassed does not have 60 votes in the senate. Even the bipartisan background check bill that was on the table a few years ago, that doesnt have six votes in the senate. You need 60 votes, republicans control the chamber. It doesnt seem like theres anything for them to come back for at this point. Its extraordinary rare for congress to come back into session during an august recess. A couple years ago, if you remember, there was a zika scare, a disease scare. Congress dealt with that at the end of the september. From have been times where congress stayed around for the month to take care of things. Theyve not done that here. I dont see anything on the horizon at that point, frankly. The numbers arent tlnd here ane leadership from the white house saying heres what you need to do and do it now, that hasnt happened. And this part is of what you said, which is the fact that mcconnell is looking for consensus. He knows if hes going to be called back from recess he wants to make sure somethings going to pass. And theres not necessarily legislation that they could be working on that they feel is feasible. Are they work oking anything th they could get passed threw would make them coming fwrak rece back from recess worth it . He has worked on his census consensus and that takestime time. Thats foreign keep in mind. I dont think listen, orthodoxsy on guns has been consistent for a long time and youve not seen a lot of budging. Remember, i know this is crude, but there were children who were shot in a shool a coupchool in and congress did not to do anything then. Very sadly, these shootings have become commonplace and congress has avoided acting every single time. So this time it doesnt seem like anything different is going on. This seems like status quo and thats kind of what happens on capitol hill a lot of the time. So, jake, i just want to get your take on this. We have this latest politico poll 70 of all voters supporting an assault weapons ban. I want to break that down between parties. 85 of democrats and 54 of pps. So still a majority of republicans, a slight one, but a majority to say the least. So is it that they just dont necessarily listen to these polls . Well, they think i would tell you inside a republicans mind what they i would would say sheer a assault weapons ban is a misleading questions. These arent assault weapons theyre weapons for me to protect my family and if somebody else has a bun of of rounds in a gun i should have the same amount of rounds to protect my family. If they rote the poll twrote th come back differently. The more likely scenario, if we base all of our opinions here based on precedent, based on the past, congress is going to move on to another crisis. There could be three or four more crises between now and then of who knows what nature. So politics is ever moving, ever shifting, and it doesnt appear anything will happen in the immediate. Lets hope not. Lets hope they dont move on because its an important thing to address when they come back in september. Hans, appreciate you jumping on. Jake, thank you. Still ahead, what were learning about the massive i. C. E. Raid in mississippi that saw nearly 700 undocumented workers apprehend. While President Trump was visiting el paso, texas, in the wake of this years deadliest shooting allegedly carried out by a man who echoed some of the president s harshest rhetoric against latin mernss, something historic was happening elsewhere. A massive i. C. E. Raid in mississippi. Officials say it was the largest mass arrest in u. S. History of undocumented workers in a single state in just one day. 680 workers were arrested by more than 600 i. C. E. Agents who raided seven work sites in six cities. It all happened on the day students returned to school. And now more undocumented parents have been separated from their children. Children such as this young woman crying outside of a Food Processing plant as her mother is arrested. Want to discuss this with nbc news correspondent julia ans lee and raul reyes who an msnbc news contributor. Julie, youre getting word that many of these workers have already been released. Give us an update. Thats right. We just learned from an ice spokesman that more than 300 of those 680 have been released. But, that doesnt mean that they are free to go. They still could face deportation. It just means that they can go home and live with their families until they come to their court date. Thats pretty common to let immigrants out. A lot of times we just dont have the space, i. C. E. Does not have the space to detain them all at once. Im still trying to figure out how each determination was made. We do know in the case of pregnant or nursing mothers, they simply did not take them into custody, but those people could still face deportation. You can have a court date. Sometimes theyll do an ankle monitor to make sure the person doesnt leave. These people are still facing very real consequences and they could be departed. But as of now, over 300 have been released and some may have been rejoined with their families. So where are the 380 others . They are in i. C. E. Detention. And so were not sure if the ones released had families or not. There could be children tonight, children going to school who dont know who will take care of them when they come home because their families could still be in detention. Lets talk about the children, because i just showed an image of a daughter finding out that her mother had been taken in. And im sure there are many more of those images of parents being taken in and children finding that out and coming home from school and their mother and father not being there because they have been taken in. So what has happened to some of these children . Well, in a lot of cases these children will have to go to the next of kin. But, i mean, in a Community Like this where you hit so many people, 680 across a state, sometimes it might not be just that mom and dad are gone but the aunts and uncles are gone too. So the schools are coming together, there have been some makeshift shelters set up by different nonprofits to try to do what they can for these children. But right now its a really tough situation, a very precarious situation. In the past, the Obama Administration did not go after noncriminal families like this. Mainly for this reason. What happens to a u. S. Citizen child when you deport an undocumented parent . They are left alone and they have to become part of the foster system and arguably could become more of a burden to a taxpayer when the government starts to take care of them rather than their own families. That was the reason families were left alone for those period of time under the Obama Administration. And the Trump Administration has made clear families are not only being left alone, theyre a priority now. Raul, were hearing 300 of these 680 now being released, 3 affiliate those still very much detained. Right. Likely in some of these Detention Centers that we have been showing on our air for over a year or so now. What are your concerns at this point . Well, my concerns are julias point is spot on when were talking about resources. Obviously it is illegal to work in this country without authorization. But the reason that the Obama Administration backed away from these large workplace rates had to do with the extenture of resources. The deportation of one person costs about 10,800. One night just in detention the cost of placing a person in detention is one night is 180. When you look at the amount of money that will be spent to incarcerate these people for an indefinitely amount of time, the past administrations, even under george w. Bush, they phased out these raids because they felt it was not really worth it. When you look at our broader immigration system, the backlog of immigration cases, a single immigration case can take over 700 days, thats the average. And by the Trump Administrations own data, we have Something Like 800,000 cases in the backlog. I mean, one of the things weve heard from this administration when they talk about the situation at the border is that throughout the country detention facilities are overloaded. If they are, why are they funneling more people, noncriminals moms and dads into these types pfaof facilities . And they say undocumented people should not be working here without authorization. Which is true. In my view and what many immigration applicants will say is if you want to target unauthorized workers, go after the employers, the companies, prosecute the employers, the ceos and the companies that employ them. But that rarely occurs. Julia, i just quickly have to ask you this question because as i set up this segment we had the side by side of what was taking place in el paso and the president visiting the victims in el paso and the families. And we remember the manifesto and what was written in there by the shooter, very much echoing the words of the president using words like invasion and so on and so forth. And then you have these i. C. E. Raids taking in 680 undocumented immigrants. Are we hearing anything about the timing of this . I think you cant pull apart how devastating the timing is for the Latino Community when theyre already worried about their safety after seeing what happened in el paso and then to have 680 arrested in mississippi. But the timing was surprising to me because in a lot of cases i. C. E. Will pull back if theres a political reason, if there is a natural disaster, theyll pull back and cancel those plans. In this case they went ahead. And it seems to be playing into the fears of people who worry about undocumented immigrants coming to this country. And some of those fears have been blown out of proportion, called an invasion, as youve said, and then obviously influenced this tragedy in el paso. All right. Thank you both. Up next, will bob muellers star witness finally have his moment on the hill in the latest move by House Democrats to force former white House Counsel don mcgahn to testify. Welcome back. The new legal push from House Democrats to force the star witness in the investigation of the former special counsel to testify before congress. The House Judiciary Committee is suing to enforce a subpoena against former white House Counsel don mcgahn. The white house has blocked mcgahns testimony claiming, quote, absolute immunity. Mcgahns lawyer wrote in a statement this when faced with competing demands from coequal branches of government, don will follow the former clients instruction, absent a contrary decision from the federal judiciary. Talk to me about the significance of this and the pushback were gregt detting fr mcgahn. This could be a huge lawsuit because the courts never ruled on this issue of absolute immunity. Only time a federal judge ever had a crack at it he said it didnt exist in the bush administration. But that did not come part of the case law. So no higher courts have ruled on it even though president s from both parties, including president obama and clinton asserted this. They say congress cannot call me or my close advisers to testify, period. Theyre not exerting executive privilege, theyre just saying he cant come up to testify. Thats whats at stake here. It could mean the difference between the house getting a lot of witnesses to trumps conduct or none. So will he or wont he appear, ken . Well, thats going to depend on the courts. But the reason they want him is because, as you said, hes the star witness. Yeah. The Mueller Report cited him more than 500 times, white House Counsel don mcgahn, and he was witness to some key episodes of what people view as criminal obstruction of justice by donald trump. Importantly his lawyer says that mcgahns view says he never saw anything illegal. Will he be that powerful witness, it remains to be zbleen after t seen. During the mueller testimony, mcgahns name was the first out of his mouth that thats who he was looking to come testify on the hill post mueller testimony. They see him as the john dean and it remains to be seen. Up next, while some 2020 democrats are making their pitch to black voters today, others are spreading across iowa as the state fair kicks off. Were live there next. A as the state fair kicks off were live there next. Welcome back. The 2020 democratic contenders are blitzing iowa and miami today. Elizabeth warren talking to an iowa farmer, as you can see there. Shes there to unveil her plan to boost and invest in Rural America at a farm in iowa. She and several other candidates are descending on the iowa state fair. And with the new plan comes a new set of wheels as she embarks on a multiday swing through iowa. Road warrior ali vitaly covers the campaign and joins me now. A lot of other cabinets in light of the Mass Shootings over the last week are switching their attention right now to gun control, but it seems like Elizabeth Warren is sticking with this new plan. Is this what iowa voters are most concerned with right now from what youve been hearing . Reporter well, yes. And we have heard Elizabeth Warren talk about gun control in the days talk about gun control in the days after those Mass Shootings. But here the focus on this farm is Sustainable Farming and rural issues. Al were doing a big farm tour with Elizabeth Warren where she got a briefing from one of the local farmers here about how they sustainably farm. Those rural issues are front and center as so many of these candidates come into the state for the state fair. Listen to why one of the farmers here think thats the case. So many rural voters that went for President Trump so now in a way its good because the Democratic Candidates realize, well, they better get on board and start looking at what has happened in Rural America. Oftentimes its not a very pretty picture. He did it well because he made statements that says, well, washington is to blame, you know, we got to drain the swamp. But the sad reality is, the swamp got dirtier. Reporter and so after we did that tour across the way, now Elizabeth Warren is going to talk with several farmers here. Theyve been here for decades, they see theyve seen the impacts on climate change. Theyre interested in hearing from her and overall saying democrats are doing a better job focusing on rural issues because of the election of donald trump in 2016. Thank you, good talking to you. So while candidates make their iowa push, others including Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris are heading to south florida to participate in this years black president ial forum hoping to get more support from africanamerican voters. I want to bring in sarah glover and a Political Columnist for the des moines register. I appreciate you joining us. I understand its a busy day for you to say the least. Africanamerican voters are going to be pivotal in the 2020 election. What, from your experiences and the conversations you have been having so far, what are africanamericans looking to hear from some of these president ial candidates . Some of the core issues at the forefront that journalists at the National Association of blackjou journalists here is ho africanamerican communities will continue to improve and progress and how economically families can be in better positions to provide for their children, better education. Certainly the africanamerican vote is going to be a very significant deciding vote across the country in many key battleground states. Lets talk about iowa voters he. We saw Elizabeth Warren talking to a lot of farmers on the ground unveiling her new plan there. What are iowa voters most concerned with right now . What are they going to be looking to hear . Most of the candidates who are coming to the iowa state fair tend to tailor their message toward agriculture, as youre hearing elizabeth wear wouldnt warren do. Most folks at the state fair are not farmers. Furthermore, at the fair, these people are not the same audience these candidates are going to encounter at their iowa rallies. Theyre not going to hear fantastically detailed questions about medicare for all, as often as theyre going to hear from rank and file iowa voters who are you and maybe, you know, what are you going to raise my taxes . Right. I think the play at the iowa state fair is for candidates to introduce themselves, talk about who they are, try to make a personal connection with fairgoers. Take about agriculture, tariffs. The tariff issue is front and center on peoples minds. People care a lot about gun control. They want to hear about the candidates thoughts about the tragedies over the weekend. Theres a lot of issues that people are going to care about. I think the most important thing candidates can do at the fair is be a real person. Connect with people on a personal level. Wear jeans, eat a corndog. I want to state with the iowa state fair. As we well know, the first of the last three shootings that have happened in the last three weeks was at a food fair in california, a 6yearold boy lost his life there along with two others. This country is very much on edge. This is a state fair after all. A lot of fun for many families that are attending, a way to get to know these candidates. Theyre attending this fair. I think these shootings im wondering if these shootings are going to be on the minds of so many people that are attending this iowa state fair. If theyre looking to hear from these candidates about the safety and security of their families and changes in gun reform legislation. I think they will be. In fact, joe biden this morning who is in iowa throughout his planned speech he said he was going to talk about ag issue and he devoted his remarks to gun safety and issues. I do think people that are there, a lot of times theyre there with their families, their children, they do care a lot about safety and security. And so i think, you know, definitely candidates who have plans, who can reassure voters that they have their safety in mind and that they have the experience to make sure is that country is safer than it was. Those are definitely going to be important issues to brick bring sglup i want to turn back to you for this last one. How do you think candidates are going to be able to differentiate themselves when it comes to getting and keeping the africanamerican vote . I can tell you here at the National Association of black Journalists Convention we are nearly 4,000. Thats 4,000 black journalists, students and educators. I think its remarkable that four candidates chose to come here today to talk to our constituents. We are in the on the front lines of reporting news and information that the africanamerican public and black people are interested in hearing. And so just by making the choice to come, you know, senator cory booker, senator bernie sanders, mayor Pete Buttigieg and former governor bill weld, theyre making a statement being here and engage ing with journalists of color and black journalists to take the questions that we know that the black community is interested in hearing. That in and of itself its where you are, how are you engaging . And at the end of the day journalists of color are part of the ability to report your stories and report the message and ask questions on behalf of the communities. Thank you both.
