And a National Conversation about online extremism. Craig . We are going to be having part of that conversation this hour. Meanwhile here in dayton, any moment now, we are expecting an update from authorities on the investigation. This is a live look at the Dayton Convention center. Literally less than a mile from where were standing right now. We are expecting to get some sort of update on the investigation. A few hours ago i talked to the mayor here in dayton and she led me to believe that we might, we might learn more about the motivation of the 24yearold gunman. So well be looking out, listening for that. When it happens we will, of course, bring it to you live. In the meantime outrage growing today after two more cities are forced to deal with the unthinkable. Our country grappling what to do with the endless epidemic of gun violence. President trump addressing the devastating shootings just a few moments ago. We are outraged and sickened by this monstrous evil. Now is the time to set destructive partisanship aside, so destructive. And find the courage to answer hatred with unity, devotion and love. Nbcs hans nichols is on duty for us at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. A lot of folks were looking for the president to hit on the issue of white nationalism. He did mention it. A lot of folks were also, perhaps, expecting the president to follow up on that tweet that we saw from him where he seemed to perhaps indicate that he was open to the idea of doing a bit more on background checks in this country. Yeah. He did not hit on that in his speech. No. The closest the president came on legislative policy proposals are these red flag proposals, this idea that you can almost confiscate guns after a Family Member feels someone is a threat to themselves or to the larger society. The president did say he was going to be directing his fbi to look more into hate crimes, to look more into the ideology that leads to that. He explicitly talked about domestic terrorism. And as you mentioned he condemned White Supremacy. The shooter in el paso posted a manifesto online consumed by racist hate. In one voice our nation must condemn racism, bigotry, and White Supremacy. These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in america. Craig, when you take the totality of the president s remarks there at the white house its pretty clear that he thinks Mental Illness is one of the main drivers of whats happening in our country. Now, he indicated a willingness to talk to democrats. He said we need to put partisanship aside and come together for bipartisanship, solutions. Something weve heard from president obama, even president bush in the wake of other shootings. The question here becomes what sort of specifics are going to happen and also where the president decides to go to take his message and whether or not theres consistency in his message or if this was just a one off speech. Craig . Yeah, hans, to that point, are we hearing or expecting that the president will visit either of these cities, el paso, or dayton, ohio . If past is pro log the president will make a visit to the cities. What form does the visit take . Does he meet with First Responders or actually give a speech, give remarks . In the past its taken him a couple days to go to the shooting locations. He hasnt always made remarks. So well see what the white house announces officially, what they say the president s intentions are going to be and then what the president does and crucially how hes received in these locations. So i think on all this, just stay tuned for potential travel announcements from the white house. Craig . All right, hans nichols there for us at the white house. Hans, thank you. Meanwhile, police here have released stunning video of the horrifying moments from the shooting here in dayton and we want to warn you that these images may be disturbing. Gabe gutierrez has been following the investigation here in dayton. He joins me now. What do we know about where the investigation stands right now . Craig, the big question is motive as it so often is after these shootings. We do not know why this gunman opened fire, a lot of questions surrounding his sister, what she was doing in the area. Stunning Surveillance Video which many viewers will find disturbing. If we play some of that now authorities released this yesterday and you can see some of these bystanders just ducking for cover as the shots rang out. Authorities describe just a horrifying scene but that the gunman was neutralized, they say, in less than a minute. Now, craig, you know how just incredible that is that the these officers can come in here in less than a minute and were able to take out the suspect. This video released yesterday, less than 24 hours after this investigation began. Certainly very unusual craig the authorities were able to, you know, get this much information out there. Now, as we mentioned this 24yearold gunman, connor betts, he went to high school nearby in a suburb just 30 minutes outside of dayton. Thats what authorities are looking at now. Theyre looking at his social media postings, and his last known address there. We understand theres a search going on there right now and were hoping as you mentioned a little earlier to get more information from local officials at this use briefing set to start in a few minutes. According to what authorities said yesterday theres no indication he had anything in his background that would have prevented him from buying a gun. He ordered it online from texas and it was shipped to a local gun dealership here in the dayton area and thats typically, you know, what often happens if you were able to purchase a gun online, it is shipped locally to a gun store here. No indication, no criminal history besides a few traffic tickets, craig. I spent some time last night at the vigil talking to a young lady who said she dated him for several months earlier this year and last year as well. She said that the guy seemed normal. Right. They went to the shooting range once but it wasnt one of these guys that seemed to be obsessed with guns. Right. What more do we know about the circumstances that led up to what went down here on sunday . We know he rode with his sister and her boyfriend . Thats one of the most confusing and mystifying parts about all this. He rode with his sister, we understand. They separated sat some point earlier in the night and she was found dead earlier on the street. Its unclear if she was the specific target in the attack, somehow caught in it. It seems hard to believe craig if she was his sister and they were he knew that she was here, seems quite a coincidence she would end up among the dead, the youngest victim, in fact, 22 years old. But thats what authorities are looking at. We are also looking into reports from a local newspaper, also the associated press, they are looking into some comments made by some of his former High School Classmates that they suggest that he was suspended earlier in when he was in high school, that he was suspended for having some type of hit list of Different Girls in the school. The former principal, apparently, did not dispute that account to the local newspaper here. Nbc news did not verify that but its something were looking into and im sure authorities are looking into. Gabe gutierrez, thanks. Gabe was at that vigil last night on these streets of the oregon district, locals, some of them call it little bourbon street. The feeling here, the feeling of grief and sadness palpable. So is the feeling of frustration. I talked with the mayor earlier this morning about the emotions that are being felt in this community. You go and cover city after city after city after city that this happens to. And so when i woke up yesterday in the middle of the night, and the number was 250 times this year and dayton was number 250. I think that has exhausted our community and that our community was 250, it was like okay, whats going to be done . This community this summer has been through a lot. We had 14 tornadoes tear through the urban core here and then to have this, this august. You look at one, one is an act of god and one was some tougher gun laws, could have been preventable. I heard you say that over the weekend. Heres the thing about this particular gunman. The gun was purchased legally. Legally, yes. That 100 round high capacity magazine was purchased legally. Correct. What could have been done in this particular case to prevent Something Like this . Look, we have rules. Thats what legislators are for. They can do something about it. They can say why do people need a gun like that that could kill nine people and injure 27 in the course of 24 seconds . It puts our Police Officers in significant danger. You saw the video where our Police Officer officers who are so brave are running towards a man that has that kind of power. Is that what were about . Is that what we have to live like now . If our police hadnt been standing just right there, hundreds would have been killed that day and i just think Something Else could have been done. Now, im a mayor. Yeah. All right, that was dayton mayor nan whaley a few hours ago, here she is providing an update. Give him some time for comments this morning. Thank you. Thank you, mayor. I do have just very brief update. I want to remind you that we are less than 36 hours into this incident and its investigation. Can confirm that if all the magazines that were recovered from the suspect were completely full and we have not had a chance to examine that, we just know we have magazines with bullets in them. If all of those were completely at full capacity, including the loose rounds found on the ground near him as well as in a backpack he carried he would have had a maximum of 250 rounds in his possession at the time. We can confirm at least 41 spent shell casings from his weapon based on their location and his path of travel. Thats at least 41. Because you can well understand in a very dynamic and chaotic scene as this was with people running through the crime scene, with First Responders running through the crime scene, with emergency ems trailing through the crime scene, evidence can be lost. So we can tell you at least 41 spent shell casings from the suspect. As relates to the officers we have recovered 48 45 caliber shell casings, 16. 233 shell casings and one shotgun shell casing. In terms of the persons injured were getting different information from other sources. Of persons treated in the hospital. So we have previously said 27. Theres some information theres 32. I can confirm to you that at least 14 of those injured, whether that number is 27 or 32, at least that were injured through gunshot wounds. Many people were injured through other means in their flight from this very chaotic event. There are autopsies currently being completed by the coroners office. So that is a process that is still undergoing and it will be some time before the outcome of autopsies. Thats really all i have to share thus far this morning. Thank you. Next im going to invite fire chief payne to come forward and speak a little bit about some of the First Responders from the fire ems response. Morning, everybody. So at 1 07, the Fire Department received their first dispatch to respond to the oregon district. We responded with one fire crew and one medic, which is dispatch protocol for a shooting. Immediately upon arriving on the scene we realized that we had multiple, multiple people down. We upgraded it to a mass casualty incident which called for additional response personnel and command units and then it was expanded once again shortly thereafter. Our crews transported five, five people to the hospital. Three from medic 14, one from medic 10. And actually riverside medic crew transported another. Many of those people that did make it to the hospital selftransported and so we initiated our mass casualty protocol. We put command units in place. We did our triage and our treatment and then we facilitated the transfers to the hospitals in a balanced manner so we didnt overload any one hospital. There are 37 total treated at area hospitals, and they resulted from injuries as a result of gunshot wounds, being trampled and then lacerations from fleeing the scene and broken glass. As youre aware they had nine victims plus a shooter were pronounced at the scene. And as of 9 00 this morning we have 11 victims still hospitalized. Thats all i have at this time. Thank you, chief. Next id like to invite michelle lovely to come forward and talk a little bit about what were doing with funds for the victims families and those that have been affected by this incident. Michelle . Weve been approached by community members, companies, individuals, just tons of people wanting to know how they can help and what they can do, and once again the Dayton Community is such a strong community. Unfortunately after the tornadoes and now this, just the Community Shows once again that were dayton strong. We have developed a fund at the Dayton Foundation, and anyone can give to that. Its the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund and the fund number is 8365. So you can give right on our website at daytonfoundation. Org. You can also just send a check to the Dayton Foundation with that fund listed in the memo line. We have had a lot of questions about how were using the funds, and how much weve collected and we are just as anxious as all of you to get our arms around that but were less than 24 hours with our fund being open so we are meeting actually today at noon to talk to weve had been approached by Community Foundations all across the United States who have been through unfortunately been through situations like this. So theyre providing guidance to us and were also consulting with our counsel and foundations to find out how to appropriately manage the funds and make sure theyre put out into the community in the best way possible. Okay, and ill open it for questions. Chief, do you have any greater clarity on the sister and the mutual friend of the gunman and whether you talked to the mutual friend yet about that situation on the night . Weve had the opportunity to have some conversation. I will say theres more conversation needed. I will not say at this point we have clarity of the entirety of that relationship. Chief, you talked about how the three of them suffered at some point. Did the other two know when he brought the gun out . Did he get the gun out of that car when they all three pulled up originally . We have no information at this time to suggest that they were aware of the weapons or when they were introduced into this environment. So we have no information at this time. Were they in the trunk of the vehicle or did he leave them in another location after they separated to go get it and come back . We dont have that determined with certainty. We do know the shotgun was recovered in the trunk. But exactly how they were transported to t transported to the scene has not been clarified. The condition of the companion. Still being treated in the hospital. What ailments . He received a gunshot wound to the lower torso. Chief, you said something about 36 hours less than. How close are you at this point in your mind to establishing a motive . Not close enough. Not close enough at all. We have a lot of evidence still to go through. Just based on where were at now we are not seeing any indication of race being a motive. But we are not through all the evidence and so until were through all the evidence we cannot rule that out but im saying were not seeing any at this time that suggests race is a motive. Going through last night and seeing all those people i cant imagine the stress youre under and the pain you feel for this community. Can you talk about your heart and what youve seen over the last few hours . I think, you know, ive spoken a lot about the grit and the determination of this community. And surely the 8 00 vigil was no different. You know, grieving is a process. As the chief said were probably 35 hours into this process. But, you know, i have no doubt that this community and its resilience and its willingness to see through weve seen through many things in this community and i know that were coming together strong again here. Im going to let commissioner menz and commissioner shaw answer this question as well. Its very interesting to see such a sea of so many people who have their hearts showing on their sleeves. Those who are concerned about the nine victims, which i think was upper most in terms of everyones mind, thinking about them and thinking about their families. Having some of the ministers say some of the kinds of things they said that help people understand our reason for being here, our goal is to provide as much safety as we can for our cities. You know, we escaped two major tragedies in terms of a visit from a hate group back a couple months ago, and we were able to escape even the, what, 14 to 15 tornadoes without any loss of life as well and then for this to come, and hit us at such a hard time. Were all still emotional about this in terms of how we address these issues. Some may know that when we Start Talking about assault weapons, being a vietnam vet, and i understand clearly the damage that those type of weapons can inflict upon individuals, and they have no place in the hands of average everyday citizens so we do need to have more work done at the federal and state level to make sure that we minimize these type of situations for the future. Thank you, commissioner. Thank you. Yes, i agree with what the mayor and commissioner said, grieving is a process. Weve had Great Sadness the last many hours. Now its really turning to anger. Anger about the lack of movement on gun control. We dont we are not the First Community thats been affected by this gun violence and we wont be the last. Weve got to do something and i think were about the work now of pushing the legislature and the federal government to move on responsible gun control in this community and this country. So thats what i want to leave you with. Chief, i have a question. When he turned the corner and his sister and her friend, do you think he targeted them or was it an accident . Was he just spraying indiscriminately . You know, thats a question ive asked more than once. And i dont think we can know that for certainty. It seems to just defy believability he would shoot his own sister. But its also hard to believe that he didnt recognize that was his sister. So we just dont know. For the companion, do you have any idea what time they originally went there . I dont have that information available. Weve pieced some of that together. We have a lot of cellular information. We doe know there was communication once they separated but i dont think we have all those timelines established yet. Is the companion cooperating . As best as i know. As far as when he was headed towards the inn, and you talked about thank goodness he didnt get inside, do you have any information about an earlier incident in that in the night that he may have tried to get in earlier and been denied entry . There was some information, i mean early on, but i havent been able to be a part of any conversations to these that out and to clarify that but i do know that was some indication of them being denied entrance but i cant confirm that with certainty. Who was the owner of the guns has the companion spoken to investigators today . Not that im aware of. Theres a lot of other things that were working on today. As well as our federal partners, which are expediting the transportation and analysis of digital evidence. So theres a lot more going on behind the scenes here than just following up with various individuals that we need interviews. Theres a lot of parts in motion. Did you say anything about the gunman being involved in a hit list, making a hit list in high school, a rape list . Theres information out in the media and were exploring every possible piece of information we have. Im a little bit reluctant, even if theres such evidence, to interpret it ten years later as somehow this is indicative of what happened yesterday. So i think we i will tell you the mistake thats made, and i understand your interest to try to get information out and to help people understand. By taking pieces of evidence and coming to conclusion about a significance creates mistakes, large mistakes at times. Ive seen it too often in national incidents, piecemealing information does more to misinform than inform. So we really dont know until we have all the information, all the evidence available. Well take one more question. This guy right here. Right here. Were wondering, do you know how many were hit by bullets and shrapnel versus trampled . And also, would officers be made available for interviews at some point . The officers are still on administrative leave. Theyre not going to be available for interviews. Your first question . We said 14 we could confirm nonfatal that have been treated of the 27, 32, jeff you had a Different Number even. So clearly a couple of dozen people who were treated for nonfatal injuries, 14 of which we can confirm were through gunshot wounds. Okay. Mayor, have you spoken with the president . Yeah, i spoke with the president yesterday evening, he called, around 6 00 or 6 30 before the vigil. We appreciate you all being here. I know youll be out and about on fifth street and through the community. Were really going to take these i dont want to keep on calling you in when we dont have anything new. The investigation will take longer periods of time so youll hear from us the next time we do have something new to share. Mayor, one more question with the chief. Maybe. Thank you very much. I do appreciate it. If i can answer. Chief, can you talk more about the acquisition of that firearm and your thoughts on your citizens owning such large magazines . Its problematic. It is fundamentally problematic to have that level of weaponry in a civilian environment unregulated is problematic. And his ability to purchase that online and bring it into your community . And modify it to function as a rifle. And how did he do that, chief . Im not the expert in that but i can tell you that it was modified in essence to function like a rifle. That much i can tell you. Im sure you can talk to experts how that gets done, to avoid any legal prohibitions. Thank you. Were really done. Thank you guys, have a good one. All right. There you have it there, that was for the most part that was daytons police chief richard biel. We also heard from the mayor of Dayton Nan Whaley as well. Several top lines but first of all the chief pointing out we are less than 36 hours out from the shooting that happened here, a few feet behind me. They do not have a motive. The biggest question here last night everyone i talked to here at the vigil, the biggest question was why, why would Something Like this happen in dayton, what would have motivated this 24yearold . The police chief essentially saying we still do not know, also walking us through some of the numbers, there were 14 people who were injured by gunfire. There still seems to be some confusion over precisely how many were injured total, 27 or 32. Nine people were killed here. The chief also indicating that race at this point at least race does not seem to have been a motive for the shooting. One of the big takeaways, and this is something that i would imagine reporters are going to be asking more about over the next few hours, this idea that the 24yearold gunman would fire indiscriminately into this crowd, and maybe not realize he was shooting and killing his own sister, the chief didnt have an answer to that. Was he targeting folks . Or was he just shooting into the crowd . So thats the very latest from here in dayton, ohio, that News Conference just wrapping up, told by officials there that we likely wont hear anything else from them again until they have something. Thats the scene in dayton. I want to turn back to my colleague Chris Jansing who is standing by in el paso, texas. Chris, i know youve been talking to residents there, city and state officials as well. Whats the latest on the ground in el paso . Well, like where you are craig there are still so many questions although there are things we know here. Federal authorities are treating this case as an act of domestic terrorism. So that we know for sure. They say the suspect, who is being held nearby, is talking, is cooperating. Meanwhile the Community Remains in a state of shock. Were just about 48 hours out from the shooting here walmart behind me, the grief just pouring out for the 20 People Killed on a busy saturday morning doing their shopping, many of them taking their kids to get school supplies. Lives taken, including a young mother and a teenager who was about to start his sophomore year in high school. In an attack that lasted just minutes. But in this case we may not have to guess what exactly was going on in the mind of the shooter and that, of course, is because investigators say he left a diatribe of hatred posted online just before the attack. Reaction here has been fierce. Heartbreak and an incredible show of unity. We saw that last night. We saw it the day before. One example, a long line to give blood this weekend, up to five hours long. I want to bring in nbcs Blaine Alexander whos in el paso with me as well. Blaine, what are you learning about the victims, about the injured and in general what we know about this alleged gunman who police say left behind this skreed of hate and racism . Chris, i want start with the victims and the people who were actually in the path of that shooter and we do have a little bit of good news to start off with, we know of the more than two dozen people wounded in the attack on saturday at least six people have already been discharged from the hospital and that includes two children, ages 2 and 9 years old. So that is some good news. But unfortunately so many people, chris, are not out of the woods just yet. All morning long ive been talking with officials at dell sole medical center. And learning about the conditions of those who were in that gunmans path. We do know there are at least eight people still in Critical Condition this morning, that means theyre in and out of surgery. A lot of the gun wounds were wounds to the chest, talking about very severe injuries and people who are quite frankly still fighting for their lives. Were her honorilearning more a getting a clearer picture of what was going on that saturday morning. One person came in to visit grandparents, both of whom were shot while in the walmart trying to pick out curtains for their home. Those are the types of stories were hearing and yet 20 people lost their lives that day. Chris, we know among the dead, among the wounded, include americans and also mexican citizens and that kind of speaks, of course, to the nature of el paso. This is a border town, just a few miles away from where im standing is a very heavily traveled u. S. mexico border. This is a town that was in the news a lot as we continue this debate over immigration here in the country which possibly speaks to, of course without spending too much time on the shooter himself but possibly speaks certainly to his motive. Many officials believe he is responsible for this sort of fourpage essay or skreed that was posted online minutes before the shooting which includes quite frankly a lot of very racist and antiimmigrant thoughts. Antigovernment. To put it into perspective the shooter is from allen, texas. Thats a suburb of dallas. Thats about a nine hour drive from here in el paso. Youd have to drive clear across the state of texas to get here. Thats why officials do believe, again, that he was very specific in his targeting of el paso, chris. Nbcs blayne alexander, thank you for that. In a moving show of unity here in el paso, thousands of people turned out for an interfaith vigil, so many the large field couldnt hold them and people spilled behind a fence. There were songs and prayers and tears. I had a chance to speak with the mayor of el paso, dee, the focus should be on the victims and uniting the community. Listen. Right now were going to focus on 20 funerals. Thats my focus for the next several weeks or however long it takes and then well figure out where to go from here. The number of people i saw giving blood today was phenomenal. People have been waiting four and five hours to give blood and they didnt care. Were a unique community. Were a region with a history that goes back 350 years. This will not define us. This fellow came from out of town. Pure evil. And as ive said also that i dont believe any el pasoan would have ever done this. There is a complicated problem. Not just a one size fits all solution. It also starts when we should be focusing on what unites us rather than divides us. Im glad im with the community of el paso to show you can come in and scare us and were not going to bend. This is an example for the rest of the country. Now congressman hurd pointed out several times during the course of our conversation reminding me he was one of eight republican members of the house who voted for the bill on background checks but when i pushed him about the Republican Controlled Senate he said the house did its job. He did not say anything about making a push for the senate. He also told me that he has heard the voices of people, but like many, many republicans who would actually talk to the media, frankly, craig, over the last couple of days he refused to draw a line between the president s rhetoric and what we saw here and where you are in dayton. Chris jansing for us in el paso, thank you, my friend. A domestic terrorist case, thats how federal officials are treating the el paso shooting investigation. What authorities are learning about his motivations, the holes theyre still filling in, about the dayton shooter. Well spend more time digging into what we just heard from officials in dayton. Also, the dual threat of online extremism and white nationalism. Even the fbi is struggling to get its heads around both. But there are some signs this weekend that this weekend may have been a turning point. [beep] you should be mad your neighbor always wants to hang out. And you should be mad your smart fridge is unnecessarily complicated. But youre not mad, because you have e trade which isnt complicated. Their tools make trading quicker and simpler. So you can take on the markets with confidence. Dont get mad. Get e trade and start trading today. We are back from dayton, ohio as authorities sift through evidence after the back to back Mass Shootings here and in el paso, texas over the weekend. Were learning more about potential warning signs. Some of those details raising questions about the threat from white nationalists in this country. Nbc news justice correspondent Pete Williams is in washington with that part of the story and pete we dont know a great deal about the motive in the ohio case as we just heard from officials here. But were there red flags missed in either incident . Dont know about dayton yet, and in terms of el paso perhaps but they came so close to the time of the shooting and thats this essay that was posted but it was 19 minutes before the shooting that it was posted. This is at least the third time somebody responsible for a mass shooting appeared to take inspiration from a website called 8chan. In that essay that investigators say Patrick Crusius posted online before the shooting he praised the shooting attack on mosques in new zealand that killed 51 people and the gunman who attacked the synagogue last april in southern california. They share a common view that immigration is weakening the u. S. And that theres a strong element of racism. Now the service that hosts the site, cloud flair, says it will no longer do that. It says 8chan has repeatedly proven itself to be a cesspool of hate. That lawlessness caused multiple tragic deaths. 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law and refused to moderate the commentary they have created an environment rebelling in its spirit. They realize 8chan will find some other place to host it. One other thing about the dayton shooting in that briefing you just had, the police chief was asked about this weapon that they say that the gunman had and he had these high capacity magazines that can hold 100 rounds, 100 rounds, the bullets that go into the gun. We know the episode took about 30 seconds so that would mean that the gunman was able to pull the trigger more than once a second, perhaps firing rounds as fast as 1 1 2 rounds per second, 1. 3 to 1 1 2 rounds per second and the police chief said it is fundamentally problematic that somebody can have that kind of fire power on the street. Yeah. That kind of weaponry in a civilian environment unregulated. Our justice correspondent pete, pete, he also talked about his ability to modify the gun that he bought legally online. What more do we know about that . So the weapon itself, ill ask grif to show this again. The weapon itself is fundamentally a handgun. But by adding a stock to it and a longer barrel he in essence creates a rifle out of the handgun. And, of course, that that gives a Person Holding a firearm the ability to aim it more and of course to support that incredibly large the weight of all that ammunition. So he says the police chief is saying that that added to the fire power. Our justice correspondent Pete Williams, thank you. During the course of my conversation with pete weve been told the death toll in the el paso shooting has just ticked up. They are now at 21 confirmed dead in el paso, texas. That brings the total number killed in the two Mass Shootings in this country over the weekend to 30 now, 30 People Killed in two separate shootings in the United States over this weekend. I want to bring in nbcs ben collins now, msnbc terrorism analyst evan coleman, senior partner at flash point also with me. Ben, let me start with you. As pete just mentioned there, this network provider, cloud fair, cutting off services to 8chan. Is that going to have any sort of measurable impact . Cloud flair would like you to believe that it is not. This website will jump to a different provider. Its not what happened last time they banned a white nationalist. They banned the daily stormer and theyve had a hard time finding hosting in a country that allows this sort of hateful rhetoric, only in the United States because of the first amendment. Its a very complicated thing. 8chan is not a place that a regular company thats about to ipo would love to have in its portfolio. Thats what happened with cloud flair. They said this is enough of this thing and its going to go away. It would seem, not to oversimplify this, ben, it would seem that just basically it would be a game of whack a mole. One server shuts them down, they pop up on another. It is a game worth playing, i think. Everything on this website is talking about the race war and calling this man a martyr today. Its not a website of anything other than an act of war at this point. They are fully into the idea that this martyred person is for the cause of, you know, white young men. Thats where were at with this website. Thats whats happening on this site now. So its look, it is a complicated thing. Its going to be hard to track it down but frankly were very far behind in terms of policing this sort of thing and in looking at these spaces. This is a place that, you know, im not saying some of these shootings could have been stopped but, you know, these people can be tracked. We just dont have the resources behind it like we do with other things like isis, its domestic terror, not International Terror and we have not taken white terrorism seriously enough in this country. And we now know that four more people have been killed in this country as a result of domestic terrorists than their isis counterparts and affiliated groups. Evan, ill turn to you and ask you about something we heard from President Trump last hour. This idea that social Media Companies and other companies on the internet can do more to detect mass shooters before they strike, is that a realistic expectation . Yeah. It totally is and i think if you look at Companies Like facebook and twitter, they are investing in enormous amount of resources trying to prevent this stuff from entering their platform, preventing people from using their platform in this way and whats interesting is that the individual in el paso, unlike the new zealand shooter, no longer used facebook to host his content. He hosted all of his content on 8chan and unfortunately 8chan is back online right now and the 8chan admins are saying its just a bump in the road. Were going to move forward and you would think, with the president dedicating so much of his time to attacking facebook and twitter for the alleged deplatforming of conservatives, you would think he would at least dedicate as much time to going after social media providers like 8chan that are explicitly now being used by people organizing acts of terrorism. If isis did this we would fire missiles at the people setting up these websites. We do, do that, we should take domestic white terrorism as seriously as isis or al qaeda. The body count would at least suggest that . Evan and ben, thank you. Dozens of survivors of both shootings are still being treated at hospitals here in dayton and el paso, texas as well. They range in age from 22 to 57 and include five men and four women, including the 22yearold sist sister. As this community continues to search for answers we are learning a bit more about what happened in those moments from survivors. At that paragraph when the shooting happened and jumped in to help moments after the shots were fired. A warning, though, several times during the course of our conversation she became quite distraught. I was worried about the friend i was with, just wanted to make sure she was okay. And then i ran around the side of the building and verified that it was safe and asked like, you know, where the shooter was, like if it was safe for me to enter. I told them i was a trained nurse and i was willing to help. And they told me he was in handcuffs. And i just instantly went and it was like a cop would relieve me and i would run to the next person. I just cant even explain it. Reporter . But you tried . I tried. And, you know, there were some people that were had been shot, but awake and coherent and im talking to them as im doing compressions, just trying to keep them awake. My heartbreaks for their familie families. With me now are two people who both lost close relatives in the sunday shooting, donna johnson, david davenport. Thank you for being with me. Thank you. We chatted yesterday. You were wearing a shirt that also had love. Yes. Yes. You said that your nephew, when you left him, he used to say the same thing. Yes. I love you. I love you . I love you, yes. What else can you tell us about thomas . Thomas was a great father, a great brother, a great nephew. Just a great family man. He loved his kids. He loved his family. A lot of his little cousins and nieces and nephews looked up to him. He was real in their lives as far as trying to be a great role model and he just loved his family. He always was the big cousin that they called uncle, played with and everything. So he was just a great kid all around. A great kid all around. David, i understand that you lost two people . Yes, sir. Who . Thomas, my first cousin, and then i lost another cousin on my dads side, lola. What was she like . Same thing, sharing, caring, loving. She had two daughters, was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Thomas, we grew up in the same household. We were more like brothers than cousins. Thats just how our family was raised. We just share love like that. And just gone too soon. Gone too soon. What do you both want to come from this . With this tragedy, we want people to know that in spite of everything that is going on, you need to live life. You need to enjoy life. Its unfortunate that this happened or whatever, and the thing is, we have to keep going on. Thank you. Thank you for your time. Thank you, thank you. Uhhuh. I want to turn back to my colleague, Chris Jansing, in el paso, texas, where people are still processing this act of hate inflicted on a community. Many of them, craig, over the course of the last hour, have been laying flowers and balloons and messages at the makeshift memorial at the walmart behind me. Last night thousands of people, an overflow crowd, gathered in el paso. There was an interfaith service. And there was a show of unity. People praying, singing, honoring the memories of what are now 21 people who died. Many of them signing messages of hope. In that crowd i met three teenagers often in tears throughout the evening and who told me how their lives are forever changed. Having to realize that racism is so alive and strong that people are willing to kill us for it and right from manifestos, hating against us because of our nationality out of all things is terrifying. Like its i never had to come to terms with my own mortality for being hispanic. Manifesto opened your eyes. People really think of us like that. They think of us as monsters, as something that shouldnt even be alive. People dying simply because they were born slightly south than them, simply because theyre slightly darker than someone else, its terrifying. Reporter they think of us as monsters. Jorge elsalvo joins me now. These young women talking about how terrified they are. What was it like inside there, when you arrived on the scene . Give us a sense of what happened. So i showed up a little bit later. I showed up to the scene. People were running out of the building. I saw people with their hands up. I saw people hugging, crying, embrace i embracing, trying to stay calm as much as they could. It was pretty frantic. It was pretty chaotic. Seeing a ton of police cars, barricading the building was something i never experienced. Could you even describe the emotion of what you were seeing, how people were responding to this . It was pretty devastating. The moment of it all, being away from their families, trying to understand the situation and really just fight the panic of everything going on was pretty overwhelming. What are the folks thing wanted me to understand last night is that even though el paso has been at the center of the immigration discussion, here its a way of life. The idea that someone would drive 650 miles to target them because of who they are is just mind boggling for them. And its pretty it speaks to el paso, though. I think el paso is incredibly resilient and been more unified than they have. Hu hurtful to a person who would have been attacked in this community. Its pretty terrifying but also i think, you know, people wont stop living their daytoday lives. They know this is a safe place. Yeah, weve seen that. The commute from el paso to juarez is a commonday experience. People are ready to continue with their everyday lives and get back to the normal lives. Jorge salgado, thank you very much. Craig, you and i are often on the scene of the same shooting, not different shootings, but a Community Coming together, to support each other and to say no to the hate and violence. Craig . When evil shows up, so do the good people in this country as well. You are right, my friend. Chris jansing, thank you, in el paso, texas. That will wrap up this hour of msnbc live. Ill see you tomorrow morning and throughout the day here on msnbc in dayton, ohio, as well. Andrea mitchell reports starts right now. Right now, nation in crisis. After a weekend at his new jersey golf resort, the president pointedly, today, denouncing racism and White Supremacy after the el paso slaughter, followed by the dayton killings 13 hours later. Ine
