Have the press right out here, so perhaps you just want to stay to the press. But i just want to let you know there are was him, not me. Because im with him. He was hes a tremendous talent, hes a hispanic man, he went to harvard. I do not think it is right and fair for this administrations Labor Department to have epstein as the focus rather than the incredible economy that we have today. And so i called the president this morning, i told him that i thought the right thing was to step aside. Cabinet positions are temporary trusts. It would be selfish for me to st stay in this position and continue talking about a case thats 12 years old rather than about the amazing economy we have right now. And so i submitted my resignation to the president effective seven days from today. So epstein is out excuse me, acosta is out. He had been under fire over his role in the controversial 2008 epstein plea deal that. Is when acosta was the u. S. Attorney in the Southern District of florida. Let us try and cyst throusift ts here. Hans nichols is at the white house for us. He was at that wide ranging impromptu and back and forth. We have a msnbc senior political analysts. David jolly a former republican congressman from florida, also an msnbc contributor. And former federal prosecutor carol lamm is with me and so is nbcs investigation reporter tom winter. Hans, ill start with you there at the white house. You were there with the president in that gaggle. What did we learn . We learned that the president accepted the resignation. That was unclear when the president came out, i almost thought at first he wanted to sing alex acostas praise. Then he said he accepted the resignation. He also made it clear that he wants to drew a line under this epstein affair, he wants to move on. And President Donald Trump is clearly trying to distance himself from mr. Epstein. Listen to how he described their dispute without actually going into the details of it. Andy have a falling out a long time ago. The reason doesnt make any difference, frankly, but i havent spoken to him in frob y probably 15 years or more. I wasnt a big fan of Jeffrey Epstein, that i can tell you. And now if you look the remnants hurt this man and i hate to see it happen. He was very well known in palm beach the his island, whatever his island is, wherever it is, i was never there. Find out the people that went to the island. But, Jeffrey Epstein was not somebody that i respected. I threw him out. So, craig, acosta will lose his position at the end of next week. He said hed stay on for another seven days. They have a develop that they are saying is going to be the acting director. That makes three acting direct towards. And the president ges on oes on talk about the economy, ohio, wisconsin. A wideranging discussion. Take shots at paul ryan, weighing in on iran, trying to defend nancy pelosi. Im sure you have a busy hour trying to sort it all out. It was odd, hans, to hear peter pointed this out pit dont know if he did it on the air. It was odd to hear him go after some of the aforementioned, but he never said anything disparaging about Jeffrey Epstein. Yeah. I mean, i dont know i think the white houses strategy on this is to basically pretend that donald trump didnt have a relationship and if he did it was so long ago and then he severed that relationship and moved on. It is slightly given how quickly the president is to criticize members of his own party, for example he called paul ryan a baby, he didnt say anything overtly negative about epstein. But did he try to make it clear that they had some sort of dispute, the nature of that dispute is something we should all be trying to figure out as reporters, and threw him out, as the president said, of his club and didnt want to have anything to do with him. The president also tried to shift and put the onus on democratic politicians like bill clinton who did travel with epstein and tried to make that point. Clearly they wanted to move on and thats why he accepted the resig nation of alex acosta and well see how we continue to talk about this and what the strategy of the president will be. Craig. Ashley, it was two days ago that the president supports his labor secretary publicly. Talked about that support. Do we know anymore about how this played out . Was this really acostas own doing or did the president give him a nudge . Well, were still finding this out in realtime. But what we do know in talking to people that day of acostas News Conference and this week was that his position was always fairly tenuous. The message from the white house and the people in the president s orbit was not that he was indefinitely safe, it was that he had bought himself another day or two. Acosta was someone who was not beloved in the administration. Its not that he had a ton of enemies, but he and the current chief of staff had tangled a little bit. There was some frustration that he was moving too slowly on some of the deregulation pushes they wanted to see from obama era policies. So there was that dynamic. He had rubbed some people the wrong way for other things and there was a sense in his News Conference, which of course was a performance, really, for an audience of one, some people thought had he done an okay job. He sort of hadnt done himself any real harm and that was a win. And other people thought that he needed to be more animated. Not necessarily kavanaugh animated, but something a little more forceful and he kind of liked that fulltlolthroated defense. It was always kind of touch and go and as we saw he didnt even make it a full week. I want to, david jolly, come to you for a moment. You watched all of that play out. Sure. I also found it a bit unusual on two occasions during that 30minute tirade they pointed out that alex acosta was hispanic for no apparent reason. But beyond that, what else struck you about what we just saw and heard from the president of the United States . First is a subtlety, craig, that i think everybody should take note of. There was no moral conviction in acosta resigning or in donald trump accepting the resignation. This was all of a transactional nature, a political insulation, if you will. Millions of americans heard that, particularly past survivors of sexual assault, heard this was a transactional moment for the president and acosta, not a moral one. I think what we know, as ashley alluded to, is the secretary of labors position particularly on the hill was going to grow untenable. Certainly there would be confrontations forthcoming. But you also have to look at the politics of the next 16 months. This would be very akin to a roy moore situation, although on a much graver scale that the president would have to wrestle with. When it comes to Jeffrey Epstein, call that though the president has denied it vehemently, his attorneys have as well, the epstein matter touches donald trump in a way roy moore never did. Donald trump was named in one of the allegations against Jeffrey Epstein back in a civil complaint in 2016, something that trump cant vehemently deny. But nonetheless, it is his Social Circle and donald trump needs to get away from this as quickly as he can. And cukudos to the journalists staying on top of it. Lets bring in tom winter here. Lets talk a little bit about this case that seems to have brought all of this to a head right now. The Jeffrey Epstein case and acostas handling of it back in 2008 when he was prosecutor there in southern florida. Well, i mean, i think, you know, we got here today for a couple reasons, for the journalistic efforts of the miami herald. Certainly we got here for another reason, because in february the judge who had been overseeing a lot of these six cases, the judge in the Southern District of florida in the Miami Federal Court essentially said, hey, you guys broke the law when you put together this deal and you didnt know the fight victims. On top of that, this is something that acosta wasnt being straightforward and wasnt being really forthcoming with at his press conference. He said and you guys led them to believe that you were still going to prosecute him even though youve got this signed agreement. So it was a couple of Different Things that got us to this point. Then i think on monday when everybody saw that another federal jurisdiction, the Southern District of florida, prosecutors here in manhattan were able to go after him and included a lot of the same conduct that epstein had been doing in florida that was under acostas purview back then, people looked at this and said why couldnt you have charged this at the time . This is pretty cut and dry the type of behavior and the things that hes alleged to have done. And by the way, he pleaded guilty to some of this stuff. I think when everybody looked at it in the totality, saw some of the contra dra dictions that were playing out in the press conference were we had the discussion here on msnbc earlier this week where i was going through what the state had found and found clear violations of federal law that they didnt even consider. The child pornography, thats an automatic for federal prosecutors. Youve got an image, an underage girl, boom, put it together. So i think i think we got to a point here today, and i can tell you its going to keep getting worse for acosta as more comes out, as more of these files from back then come out and are reported on and as we hear more from vfederal investigators here in new york. Ceremony, as a former prosecutor what do you make as acostas actions as u. S. Attorney and the resignation today. Remember, alex acosta was not just the United States attorney in the Southern District of florida. Back up for two years prior to that, he had been the assistant attorney general at the department of justice in washington as the head of the civil rights division. If anybody should have known how to appropriately treat victims of a sex trafficking crime, it should have been alex acosta. So to take in the very weak position he did as the United States attorney in miami and really let Jeffrey Epstein off the hook in the way did he, was was pretty bad. And, you know, in his it struck me really in his press conference the other day it sounded more like a Closing Argument the defense might give if they were trying to defend alex acosta. He said that, well, the crime victims rietsd act didnghts act to these young women because they didnt bring a case. But his own office in miami told the victims they were entitled to rights under that act. And they actually argued to the Defense Attorneys for epstein that the victims deserved notice under that act. So he was he was going against what his own prosecutors had argued in miami. Sthoifrpg t so i think the options for him were narrowing down, he just didnt have much choice at the end of the day having been found by a federal judge to have violated the law. Heres more of what the president said about his now outgoing labor secretary. He made a deal that people were happy with and then 12 years later theyre not happy with it. Youll have to figure all of that out. But the fact is, he has been a fantastic secretary of labor. And alex called me this morning and he wanted to see me and i actually said, well, we have the press right out here, so perhaps you just want to say it to the press. Hes a tremendous talent. Hes a hispanic man. He went to harvard, a great student. And in so many ways, i just hate what hes saying now. Because were going to miss him. Ashley, this is just the latest departure from this trump white house, and i think we have a screen here, full screen where we can show folks at home, the number of people who have left the administration so far. There are a lot of names on the screen from 2017 to 2018, and now the 2019 as well. Were going to keep the screen up for a little bit so folks can try and digest some of these. But the reality is, this is a president that has a number of acting secretaries, right, ashley . He sure does. I think secretary acostas departure now makes will be the fifth sort of acting open position. Its worth noting he also has an acting chief of staff. And the president , when you talk to people in his white house, he actually kind of likes this. He likes keeping people, he believes it keeps them a little off balance, a little more in his debt, kind of struggling to please him because they dont have that job security. Although, again, lets be clear, as weve seen, the president even a full cabinet secretary whos not acting, he can fire them with a tweet or an impromptu gaggle as we saw today. So its not real job security, but he doesnt mind keeping people off balance. It worries people who are sort of advocates of Good Government and traditionalism on the way this is done, but for the president himself, hes not actually particularly concerned about this. Hans nichols, the president also spent some time going after former Speaker Paul Ryan. Yeah. For folks who arent familiar with this new found feud, as it would seem, bring us up to speed on what led the president to unload on paul ryan. So paul ryan had given an interview to a reporter who was writing a book, that book came out. And in that book theres some critical comments about the president saying that paul ryan prevented President Donald Trump from making bad decisions because President Donald Trump wasnt that familiar with the workings of government, the levers of power. That was essentially paul ryans argument. For President Donald Trump, that was too much. He attacked him at at one point he called him a baby. He said hes an ineffective speaker. All but called him a lightweight. That was before and after he spoke about paul ryan two times in the between there he defended nancy pelosi as a democrat saying shes not a racist and that alexandria ocasiocortez knows better. So at the same time hes criticizing a Republican Former speaker whos out of power who is in private life, hes defending speaker pelosi, rising to her defense, and its just yet again another example that when the president feels however criticized, he fights back. Sometimes he almost seems to have a little regret, and i meat get dinged for this but ill give you a quick example. The president almost expressed contrition for the u. S. Ambassador kim darrochs, or uk ambassador of the u. S. That he was let go because the president most recently has been told that now departing ambassador darroch had said some nice things about President Trump as well. So some contrition for President Trump about darroch the whole darroch situation, but unloading on paul ryan. Just to remind folks about what he said about paul ryan. Heres just a snippet of the president on the south lawn. Here he is. Paul line let us down. Paul ryan was a terrible speaker. Frankly, he was a baby. He didnt know what the hell he was doing. Just a smattering there. We also, david jolly, found out a little bit more about the i. C. E. Raids, it would seem. The president saying that these are, in fact, going to start happening on sunday. But he also said were focused on criminals, were focused on if you look at ms13, we take those people out, we take them out very legally. They all have papers. It was it really didnt seem to make a whole lot of sense. No. Look, this is a campaign for imagery for this president. What he should have learned from 2018 is the imagery of separating families, in other words, going into somebodys home and pulling somebody out with the deportation order does not work for him politically. You have to ask, is it just rooted in cruelty or is it the politics of his base . But, craig, if i could reindividuals it a clip you played where he said there was an epstein deal and 12 years later people dont like it, who is the president blaming there . Is he blaming the press . Is he blaming the victims who now are coming out and saying he shouldnt have gotten this deal . Because at the end of the day when trump talks about draining the swamp and points at d. C. , i think a lot of americans look at these High Net Worth Social Circles that insulate and overlook crimes by their peers out of some type of social deference what the president is doing here very subtly is very dangerous and i dont think we can overlook that. Some fwrbreaking news on th muchanticipated testimony from robert mueller. We were expecting to hear him testify next wednesday. Were now learning that may not be the case. Kim dilanian joins me now. And on capitol hill for us, political senior reiter jake sherman who is also an msnbc contributor. Jake, let me start with you on the hill. What are you hearing . Were reporting politicos reporting that its under consideration, the Judiciary Committee is in serious negotiations in conversations about delaying this testimony a week. And in addition, adding another hour to the time period that members can question mueller. Now, this is important because members of Congress Want their crack at bob mueller. And under a previous agreement, the time would be very short. And actually in the house rules, every member of Congress Gets five minutes to question a witness during a committee hearing. So people were really worked up and people were really exercised about the limited time period that they would be able to question mueller. So this is a concession. And while it does kick it back a week, again, this is a longer hearing would be obviously more dramatic and would give people an opportunity to question him. So theyre squabbling over time here. How much time would be allotted for the hearing . Yeah. And, remember, there are two committees that are going to question mueller. Soed ago so adding an hour to both hearings would make the day much longer. Kicking it back a week does also put it into a whole mess of other issues congress will have to deal with before it august recess. Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin just sent a letter to capitol hill moments ago that said Congress Needs to raise the debt limit before they leave for august, which is really just a big bomb in the middle of everything else. So this month, which should have been a little bit quiet, more quiet than its turning out to be is becoming extraordinarily frantic on capitol hill with this hearing which is going to be longer, presumably, and now the debt limit which going to co come due. So this sleepy summer, not that it ever was, is getting busy. This is a body not known for acting with swiftness or any legislative matter. No. Ken dilanian, with regards to the mueller testimony, are you suspecting that we are going to learn a great deal more than we already know . Not necessarily, craig. But for democrats, this is about getting this story in front of the american public, much of whom has not read the mueller report. Like jake, nbc news has been told by two sources familiar with the matter that there are talks ongoing to delay the testimony by a week. And i think this just underscores howl difficult this has been for democrats to get this basic thing, which is the testimony of the man who spent two years investigating. Another factor behind all of this, craig, may be that the Justice Department expressed redser vations about two of muellers aides testifying in the closed session of the hearing, which had been the plan. Were not sure where that stands right now. Were not sure the Justice Department has considered urging those aides not to testify and democrats want that to happen because they dont want it to rest on robert mueller. He led the investigation, but had he some very sharp prosecutors under him who knew more of the details and they want to question those people behind closed doors. But its not been easy for democrats to get this story in front of the public. Theyre hoping that robert mueller, even if he only sticks to the facts in the report, just by him saying those things in public on television could have a big impact, craig. Ken, do we know if bob mule e muellers willingness has intended to change at all . We know he was willing to testify, had not been willing to testify, but apparently had agreed do so pursuant to a subpoena. We dont have any information that that has changed. But we know this is something he kwants do. Hes been reluctant and we all heard him say at the News Conference that the report is his testimony. And i think we can expect him to hue very closely to the language in the report. Thank you. Jake, any reaction on the hill to word of secretary of labor alex acosta sudden resignation . Nothing yet. The house is about to vote momentarily here and i expect people will be talking about it. Listen, it seemed like the politics were getting very bad for the labor secretary. But, i mean, now theres another acting secretary in the administration which obviously is going to cause some consternation among democrats. But, listen, the secretaries in the cabinet need to come up for budget requests to capitol hill. Theyre always up here testifying dealing with members of congress. So it didnt seem like a longterm proposition that somebody who was dealing with issues the magnitude that acosta was dealing with would be able to stay in that position. But no specific reaction yet except from democrats saying this was a proper thing for him to do and theyre happy did he it. Jake sherman on the hill. Ken dilanian in washington as well. It comes two days after he held that News Conference to defend a plea deal that he brokered for financier Jeffrey Epstein back in 2008. Acosta had been under pressure to resign after epstein was arrested last week in new york for sex trafficking where he has pled not guilty. Im joined now by daniel kiser, attorney for one of Jeffrey Epsteins new accuser. Let me start with your reaction that alex acosta is stepping aside as labor secretary. Look, acosta could no longer hold that position of public trust, it just wasnt possible. And, you know, the acosta angle to the story encapsulates a very important part of what were talking about here. Because we all agree, right, epstein was an evil guy, hes a terrible guy. But there was a network of powerful, rich, politically connected people who enabled him to carry out this abuse of children for an extended period of time. And and without those connections, without that power surrounding him, it wouldnt have occurred in this way. What acosta didnt do when he had the opportunity, which was to aggressively prosecute him, is a reflection. Its a man testtation of that issue. Do any of us seriously believe that if Jeffrey Epstein wasnt rich and wasnt powerful that he would have gotten the kind of sweetheart deal that he got . The answer is definitively no. He wouldnt have. There was a 56page indictment. There, numerous witnesses willing to testify and he got work release for a year or whatever it was or something more than a year. That is not justice and thats because the for the rich and for the powerful there is a different system of justice and it is beautifully encapsulated by what happened here. The assistance acosta needed to resign. Thats a good first step. Help me understand, though, precisely how it was that epstein was able to manipulate the system in such a way become in 2008. Well, we dont at this point this story is unfolding. So we dont have answers to all of the relationships and all of the potential quid pro quos and everything like that. But 30,000 feet weve got some answers. We know that he cultivated relationships with rich and powerful people. Theres lots of information about that. He did that in a very in a very particular and calculated way. And when a guy like that gets a deal that is otherwise inexplicable, and all Law Enforcement experts ive heard of that have spoken on the issue, cannot understand the deal that was cut for him. This is a guy who surrounded himself with wealth and power. And so there is reason to believe that those connections and that wealth helped him secure that deal. Now, the particulars of it, what the particular nature of those relationships were, i hope we find that out. Because, the storys not just about as bad as it is, the abuse that my client and others suffered, its because in this case the person responsible was not held accountable and that is because theres a different system of justice for the rich and powerful. Acostas resignation, thats a good first step. Maybe it is a wakeup call to the nation that says, no more. When youre accused of wrongdoing of this kind, when its as heinous as this, you will face the same justice as everyone else. As you probably know this morning the miami herald is reporting that at least a dozen new victims have come forward to claim they were sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein. It comes as a new accuser, your client, spoke exclusively to my colleagues savannah guthrie. Mikeup artist says that he raped her when she was just 15. She is not part of the Southern District of new yorks criminal case against epstein who has pled not guilty to sex trafficking charges. But she explained to savannah how it all started. It wasnt an overnight thing, thats why i feel like it was really well thought out, you know. Well, kind of planned, you know, to really make any feel as comfortable as possible. So almost keep me coming back. I didnt really think, you know, that, you know, her and him would conspire to have me go there to do such weird things, you know, that ended up happening. Do you think those around him, if they knew, do you want them to be held responsible . When it comes down to it, yes, theres a lot of people that you could point fingers and blame, you know. But im not blaming anybody. Im sure they knew, though. This week her lawyers asked a new york court for mr. Information about epstein and his stoshts potentially file a civil case against them. Epsteins attorneys have not responded to repeated requests for comments by nbc news. Daniel, what more can you tell us about the civil suit that you may file on behalf of jennifer . What will you be seeking . The new york state passed a new law, child victims act, earlier this year, which now permits victims of childhood sexual abuse who were otherwise time barred, statute of limitations had run, to now bring their claims. So it begins for a year period beginning in august of 2019, running through next year. What we filed prior to that, to the date where he we can formul the lawsuit is it permits us to identify some of the adults around him like the recruiter at her school when was blocks away from epsteins home and talked to her, got her to trust her. Brought her back to the mansion. We want information that would help us identify her. The secretary who put out the payments, the 300 in an envelope who set up the appointments. These adults are culp able as well. There were a network of adults that permitted this horror story to unfold for as long as it did. Some of them powerful, some of them not so powerful. But there was a network of adult enablers. And part of our intention is to attempt to identify who some of those adults. So you could potentially sue them as well. Absolutely. And we will if we can identify some of them. Miami herald reporting that at least a dozen other women have come forward with veering accusations about epstein. Have you heard from any of the other accusers . I havent heard from any yet, no. Okay. So none of his other accusers have contacted you or your law firm . No. First, your client. How is she doing . Well, you know, she is emotionally exhausted. This has been a week like no other in her life. But she is feeling good. I mean, she is grateful that shes able to tell her story. She feels brave. Im so proud of her. Shes now one of my high heroes. Shes put a human face on this story. The response has been terrific. And shes saying to Jeffrey Epstein, im not scared of you any longer. But you know what else shes saying . Shes saying those around him and the powerful, the kind of relationships that preented hver from coming forward before because she was scared, im not afraid of you. Im not afraid of any of you anymore and i will seek justice and i will expose what happened to me and what happened to the other girls. Keep us posted, okay . Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. President trump continues to unload on former Speaker Paul Ryan amid ryans new criticism of the president s leadership. President trump is expecting in wisconsin any minute as hes lashing out at one of the states favorite sons, former House Speaker paul rieb. Paul ryan was a lame duck for a long time as speaker. He was unable to raise money. He lost control of the house. The only success paul ryan had was the time that he was with me, because we got taxes cut, i got regulation cuts, did i that mostly without him. But for paul ryan to be complaining is pretty amazing. Those remarks come just hours after the president fired off a barrage of tweets last night attacking the former House Speaker calling him a lame duck failure who, quote area lost the majority because of poor leadership and bad timing. The attacks come as an upcoming back, american carnage details criticism of the president from prominent republicans including ryan. Including i told myself i have to have a relationship with this guy to help him get his mind right, ryan recalls, because im telling you he didnt know anything about government. I wanted to scold him all the time. Quote, we have a responsibility to try and rebuild. Dont call a woman a horseface. Didnt cheat on your wife. Dont cheat on anything. Be a good person. Set a good example. David jolly is a former republican congressman from florida who served with paul ryan. Mr. Jolly is also of course an msnbc political contributor. Congressman, what do we make of this dustup between the president and your former your former house leader . Yeah, what a relationship, right, craig . I will say this. I personally dont think paul ryan ever liked donald trump. In fact, when donald trump sealed the nomination coming out of the indiana primary of may of 2016, all of the vanquished foes of the president said hes our nominee, they fell in line. Paul ryan didnt. He drug his feet. He didnt interview the next day and said im just not there yet. Eventually he found a way to get there. As i reflect on these moments, craig, its easy to say people are being due police tis and they should have spoken up. There is a class of leadership that are responsible for normalizing this president. With all of the president s behavior, they spoke out about it, the never trumpers spoke out against it. What gave the president normalcy was the silence of people like paul ryan and the silence of mitch mcconnell. The republican elected leaders across the country, the republican finance group that decided in their silence they would give a nod to this president and work with him, that is what created normalcy for this president. Ryan, as you know congressman jolly, refused to go out and campaign with then candidate trump in the wake of the access hollywood tapes. But he chose to say very little during his time as House Speaker during trumps presidency. You served with him. I mean, could have made a bigger difference within the Republican Party with a more oh, sure. So why didnt he . Well, because i think there was a moment in that book when paul ryan said donald trump, youre disinvited from wisconsin, paul ryan goes to the political rally in wisconsin anyway and ryan gets booed and they chant trumps name. Paul ryan realized thats where the party was. I was there during the transition from boehner to paul ryan. I used to say john boehner was like your dad, he could discipline you. Paul ryan was your buddy. He was not one to bring cross words publicly. But if you look at leadership, and theres no comparison in the trump factor. But leaders often survive by not taking controversial positions. Nancy pelosi doesnt really want to talk about impeachment. Mitch mcconnell creates controversy with his decisions. Hes not out there leading the National Narrative on it the we dont hear much from chuck schumer. Part of the survival of political leaders is kind of this milk tose silence, and thats what we got from paul zblien theres a great anecdote about ryan and priebus worked together during this time. He writes when President Trump won saturday in early 2017 accused the Obama Administration of tapping his phones during the election, he called chief of staff Reince Priebus to ask his opinion of that tweet. A slumberg confused priebus opened his own and then called ryan a fellow wisconsinite and long time alley. Paul, what the hake is going someone to whats he talking about. Ryan woke up, read the tweet and burst into maniacal punch drunk lofte drunk laughter. Is there a better illustration with trumps relationship with the establishment than what we just heard there . No. And understand if there was any type of quiet deal done, Reince Priebus was a friend of the president. Part of adding pence and priebus to the trump team, if you will, was to satisfy some of the establishment republicans. But focus on the staestablishme republicans because that moment is telling. He would also walk the hall telling the press i dont read the president s twitter, i dont know what he said. He did know what he said, he did read it, and ha is the silence we get to hold republican officials accountable for. Imagine in the last two years, craig, if Republican Leaders on the hill had spoken up against the president , even suffered the consequences of it, it would not have normalized this president. The nation would know that this is a president that does not fit within the paradigm of leadership were used to if his own team continued to speak up against him. But they chose not to and often they lied to the press in covering up for him. Congressman jolly, well leave it there. Thank you. Thanks for your time. Raids that are set for sunday, targeting immigrant family members in cities across the country. Heres what he said to reporters. People come into our country illegally, were taking them out legally. Very simple. Its not something i like doing, but people have come into our country illegally. When people come into our country, we take those people out and we take them out very legally. They all have papers. Its a process. And i have an obligation to do it. A member of the New York Times Editorial Board is here, thank you for your time. What concerns you most about the plan if sunday . Both whats happening and what were hearing about it ahead of time. So many things,i its hard t know where to begin. This is a nation of borders and laws, and you know, the deportations are something that occurred under the Obama Administration. The difference here is that not only is the president going after they say theyre prioritizing folks who are criminals or have a criminal record. Thats not always the case. I. C. E. Is becoming increasingly emboldened and is just not being held accountable. Theres u. S. Citizens that get caught up in the sweeps. The due process is just not happening here. So were not talking about folks who are going to a Court Hearing on sunday and then theyll be told, okay, theyve got a certain amount of time to leave the country. Everyones going to get swept up. Families are going to be separated. Citizens and not. And, you know, its meant to strike fear into immigrant communities. Not just among those who are here illegally, but actually just immigrant communities in general. Its cruel and i believe that immigrants are entitled to due process and this is not what it looks like. Members of the hispanic congressional caucus just sounded off on these raids, heres what they said. These are folks who have not gotten into trouble with the law. These are honest hardworking people who are immigrants. Many of them have u. S. Citizen children. Those parents will now be separated from those kids. The president is trying to terrorize families. Lets call his raids what they really are, theyre family separation raids. How are folks elected, nonelected, fate based communities, how are they fighting this . Is there really much they can do in two days to stop it . There are a few things that are happening right now on the ground. One of those things is that legal groups like legal aid, are coming together in immigrant groups and theyre letting people know that they have rights. For example, i. C. E. Rarely has a warrant necessary in order to int enter someones home. Thats something a lot of people dont know. People are being apprised of their rights. The other thing thats going on is that immigrant lawyers, lawyers who protect immigrants across the country are on call. Theyre staffing up and prepared to rush to Court Essentially to try and represent people. The thing that every day americans can do, maybe who arent as close to this crisis is they can call their representative. They can take to the streets peacefully and they can let the country know and the president know and their representatives know this is not acceptable to do done in their name. Thank you so much. Thanks for making that trek over. Youre always welcome. Were going to stay on top of that breaking news through the afternoon. Labor secretary alex acosta stepping aside. Thank you, good day, everyone, im Andrea Mitchell with breaking news. A stunning development, President Trump escorting alex acosta to the cameras on the south lawn today to pronounce his resignation. Under fire as labor secretary over his past handling of the Jeffrey Epstein prosecution in florida 11 years ago. Epstein has pleaded not guilty this week to multiple sex trafficking charges in manhattan. Acosta had already been under fire inside the administration, and clearly failed his defensive News Conference test two days ago for an audience of one. But the president tried to put the best face on it today. He made a deal that people were happy with and then 12 years later theyre not happy with it. Youll have to figure all of that out. But the fact is, he has been a fantastic secretary of labor. And alex called me this morning and he wanted to see me and i actually said, well, we have the press right out here, so perhaps you want to say it to the press. Hes a tremendous tale
