From the European Union. President trumps trip coming to a close in france on thursday when the president will honor the 75th anniversary of dday. The invasion on the beaches of normandy. Were watching all angles of this. Nbcs Peter Alexander also traveling with the president along with keir simons. With mere here instudio, former secretary of state of Public Diplomacy and also a political nbc analyst. Mr. Alexander, start with you. Watching live images of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker bowles, duchess of cornwall, live as they appear to greet President Trump and first lady melania. What are we seeing, peter, and expected the rest of this trip from President Trump . Reporter craig, from the president s perspective, certain seem thepageantry, the kind he loves. The president obviously, you remember from bastille day in france. Emmanuel macron fed him with a giant parade he got to enjoy. The president here last summer didnt get this kind of visit. He is this summer. The president , aides say, as much as anything, sends a message to americans back at home. Their desire americans will see the president looking stately, being welcomed. Most leechbrecently visiting th president in japan recently and now here in the United Kingdom compared back to the chaos back home in an effort to make democrats feel small that theyre still playing politics with the topic of impeachment and other issues. Of course, this president is always a great disrupter and wasted no time disrupting the situation here, even before landing in the uk. He tweeted lashing out at sadiq khan, the city of london, the first muslim mayor here, saying they is a stonecold loser after khan was heavily critical of President Trump, calling him a divisive leader. And tomorrow, for all the pageantry youve seen today, really, thats when the politics comes in to play. The president will be sidebyside with the Prime Minister, theresa may, who will be stepping down end of this week over that crucial issue for all those across this country. That is brexit, and the future. The president has been pushing for a more aggressive stand, aggressive departure for england from the European Union. Also hes suggested that Boris Johnson, the former foreign minister here would be a pretty good option. A pretty Good Alternative to Prime Minister theresa may going forward. Unclear how this will sit with the brits as huge protests are expected to take place beginning tomorrow. Craig . Peter alexander there in london. Keir simmons also standing by for us in london as well. You are, shall we say, an expert on all things british, my friend. We have seen a great reporter its the accent, craig. Its more than that. But weve seen a great deal of pageantry this morning. A lot of protocol as well. How is this visit playing over the pond . President trump, First Lady Melania Trump, First Official state visit there to the United Kingdom. What are brits saying about all of this . Reporter well, look. The british are as divided as americans are politically. So its a very, very difficult question to answer. Honestly, the streets are not lined with cheering crowds. Thats one image that President Trump isnt getting. Neither, though, are their largescale demonstrations. We expect demonstrations tomorrow. Well see how substantial they are. He hasnt been welcomed kind of with open arms by the British Public, but he has been by the British Royal family, and some sense, that is what matters, because what youre seeing here, craig, is an institution the British Royal family, that has lasted through centuries and 1,000 years, lay down its longlasting perspective, which is no matter what the politics, no matter who the president is, the important thing maintain the relationship between the United Kingdom and the united states. Thats clearly in the United Kingdoms longterm interests. In that sense it is political, and all of the pomp and pageantry is clear if it is playing well for the president in the u. S. , look, the British Royal family has helped with that. I dont think it is to be just looked over that all of this began at around midday here here in the uk, just as america was waking up. It was taken live across the morning shows coast to coast, and that, really, is an opportunity for President Trump just the kind of opportunity Peter Alexander wash talking about there. In a sense, President Trumps gift to mess it up, and hes capable of that, clearly. But so far what weve seen in the past few hours are really stately pictures of him being shown history. He was shown a number of items from the Royal Collection that underscore the relationship between britain and the united states. Historical pictures and books. The queen will have really enjoyed that. There was one picture which President Trump clearly enjoyed more than some of the other artifacts perhaps and then you have a moment in Westminster Abbey in which he laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown warrior, and thoughts go to the way that europe was ripped apart by politics in the last century in two world wars. Poignant thoughts, honestly, about where we are politically in the world and the challenges that we face. What the British Royal family tried to do is rise above all this and take a longerterm view. I think thats what you are seeing them try to do here. Despite the president s tweets. This was the scene a short time ago in london. We also, just a few moments ago here, saw President Trump, first lady melania, walk in to Clarence House with Prince Charles and camilla, the duchess of cornwall. This was the scene just a few moments ago. They are having tea right now. It is just a few minutes after 4 00 there in london. President trump and Prince Charles, they have, shall we say, vastly different stances on the environment, but for more than 40 years the prince of wales has been fairly outspoken about a number of Environmental Issues facing the planet. President trump has previously publicly accused a number of climate experts of having a political agenda. So it is going to be interesting to find out if we, in fact, find out what the two men are talking about behind those closed doors at Clarence House. Lets bring in rick stengel here. You do, as you do from time to time when you come, one of the reasons we enjoy you as a guest. You take notes and write down thoughts before you share them. What have you noted throughout the course of the morning as youve seen images like this play out . Yes. I mean, the brits are better than anybody in the world on pomp and circumstance, and theyre wheeling it out. I have to say even though the British Public is very divided on areas like brexit, theyre not on the issue of President Trump. 73 of brits have a negative view of donald trump. Just by comparison, 72 have a month vi positive view of barack obama. The government is absolutely in flux. Remember, theresa may invited him to bolster her leadership and just a couple of weeks before the visit said she was standing down. She, herself, is incredibly unpopular. In some ways this is an opportunity for donald trump, because he can sort of fill the void, but if youre asking me what my notes were, craig, i mean i have to say, i mean i do think were coming to the end of the special relationship, which has been heralded since Winston Churchill told all future british Prime Ministers, dont get too far away from the united states. Issues that divide us seem actually greater now than those that unite us, and issues like issues like nato. Issues like the European Union which the u. S. Traditionally wanted the british to be a bastion of. Issues like the iran deal, which the british were party to, the p5 talks. Theres so much that divides even the conservative party from the republican president of the united states. How much do we think this, President Trumps visit is, in fact, going to tip the scales for Boris Johnson . Someone that he is publicly expressed his support of . The conservative who is thought to be most likely the next Prime Minister there . He has expressed support for Boris Johnson. I think it cuts both ways. Remember, its not a general election. Its just the torie party voting on him. Over the next few hours theyll be more of this, more photo ops as well. There will be a state dinner as i understand it tonight. Keir, what else do we know about the next 48 hours for the president . Reporter well, that state dinner is the, in many ways the climax, isnt it . It is a, an extraordinary occasion in the cavernous ballroom here at Buckingham Palace where every setting is measured. Even the position of the chairs, the cutlery and glasses. The queen herself chooses the menu. She will give a speech, perhaps for around five minutes. The president will respond with a speech and that will be another moment where people will have well, some people may hold their breath during those five minutes, but assuming that the president carries that off with the kind of diplomacy that clearly the queen will, then that will be a very important moment on this visit, and then tomorrow as Peter Alexander suggested earlier, the politics really properly begins with the president going to downing street and meeting with politicians. There will be a return dinner for, held by the president for members of the royal family and there are some questions about which politicians, which british politicians, might get invited to that. Despite these pictures that are playing out, you have to say very well for the president , behind the scenes there are rumblings and questions. One i should really point out, peter, is that people are talking about how prince harry appeared to hold back away from the president when he was spotted during that moment when the president and the queen were looking around the Royal Collection a little earlier at Buckingham Palace. Prince harry sort of came into view for a short time. Appeared to be with ivanka trump but then disappeared. There was an informal lunch behind closed doors and dont know what iran action he had with President Trump at that point. He knows the cameras, after all, lis mother was princess diana. He very much understand the media even though he doesnt like it. People are commenting. You dont know. Perhaps that was his role. To be further back, but people are commenting about the distance between the president and prince harry. Thats the kind of thing. You know, you look at these pictures now, and they look just everything that the british are so good at carrying off in terms of pomp and circumstance, but thats the kind of incident that well learn about as the hours, as the hours go on and as the day, as today and tomorrow plays out, and you know that the combination of the American Press and the british press, which are two of the most inquisitive and determined press in the world, you know that many, if there have been incidents, they are likely to just, to discover them and publicize them. So i dont think you can necessarily assume just because this is looking good now that it will look good in the next few days. All right. Keir simmons for us there in london. Keir, thank you. Peter alexander, thank you. Rick, do stick around, if you can. We want to keep a close eye on whats happening there at Clarence House. Police in Virginia Beach today trying to pin down a motive for fridays shooting rampage that left 12 people dead. At least 4 others were in the hospital at last check. Nbcs kathy park is is in Virginia Beach. Kathy what more do we know about the four still in the hospital . What more do we know about the investigation right now . Reporter craig, so i will start with the investigation. Its still moving forward, but right now its most, most of it focused on building number two where the shooting happened on friday. As far as a motive, still unclear. Yesterday at briefing city leaders were adamant stressing the fact that the suspect, he was not fired. He was not in the process of being fired but, in fact, submitted a Resignation Letter via email. Thats pretty much all they would share at this point, but today memorials are growing around this complex. There is one right behind me. Every time i turn around, it seems like someone is stopping by putting a flower down on one of the crosses. There are 12 crosses on the ground representing each of the lives lost. We had an opportunity to speak with Christina Smith and believe it or not, she was in the building at the time of this shooting. She was a receptionist on the second floor and while she wasnt comfortable about sharing moments from that fateful day, she says she is moving forward the best she can. Take a listen. Its just hard to digest. Its hard to just wrap my brain around all this and just some very wonderful peoples lives were lost. Its just senseless. So many people coming together, and thats a beautiful thing. Its not this is not how we should have to come together, but just to see so many people support each other, and she also pointed out that her office had an active Shooter Drill in the past. So her team was able to mobilize very quickly. Craig . Kathy, Police Say One of the handguns used by the shooter was equipped with some sort of silencer. In addition to having backup magazine clips. The guy has a silencer on one of the guns. What more do we know about that . Reporter so, craig that is right. He did have a silencer and the state of virginia, it is allowed to have one, but unclear if he had the silencer registered but it is prohibited in Virginia Beach, and one witness mentioned that the sound of what he thought was gunfire actually sounded like a nail gun. That is just kind of how it sounded like to folks in this area at the time. Thinking that the silencer may have given him more time to shoot and kill indiscriminately there inside that building there. Kathy park on the scene in Virginia Beach. Keep us posted, please. A recent wave of state laws restricting abortion rights puts the fight over the right to illegal abortion at the center of the 2020 president ial campaign and one of the democratic concerns Pete Buttigieg is putting an ambitious plan to reform the Supreme Court at the center of his campaign. Buttigieg wants to increase the number of justices from 9 to 15. 5 affiliated with democrats. 5 with republicans, and 5 would be apolitical justices chosen by the first 10. Nbcs rose warrior joins me. Josh, tell us more about this plan and why is he making it a central part of his campaign . Reporter well, craig, Pete Buttigieg believes all of the things that democrats want to do from Immigration Reform and health care to expanding abortion rights and gay rights are going to be so much more difficult to do unless there is basic structural democratic reforms which is why hes calling not only for getting rid of the electoral college, also for reforming the Supreme Court. In particular, the nomination process which he believes has gotten far too politicized so every single time there is an opening on the court have this knockout, drag out fight not helpful to accomplish the things the country needs to do. Pete buttigieg supports a plan to expand the number of justices. Youd have these five justices who would all be rotating from the federal appellate bench and would serve one year terms, not renewable. Basically theyd be the swing vote. An idea thats actually drawn from the commercial arbitration system, and the idea is youd have some democratic judges, some republican judges but that those judges would agree on five people who are basically honest brokers who could be the middle ground for the country and he believes that would go a long way towards depoliticizing the Supreme Court. But i would imagine the campaign acknowledges this is a long shot idea, politically . I mean it would require ratification in every state house in the country. And best i can tell, there are a couple of folks on the democratic side who have talked about Supreme Court reform, but this would be politically quite the stretch . Reporter absolutely, craig. And legal experts we spoke to about his plan said that it almost certainly would require a constitutional amendment, because of concerns about the appointments clause of the constitution. But thats why Pete Buttigieg says he wants to put this on his agenda for day one if he becomes president. Not wait any longer. He realizes its going to be an uphill battle and not something can you do overnight and believes that differentiates him from other candidates. Beto orourke supports a similar plan but hasnt talked about making it central to his agenda for the first thing hed do as president and buttigieg thinks thats the focus for the next president. Thanks. Josh is in fresno, because Pete Buttigieg is in fresno. Mayor pete will join our own Chris Matthews for a live town hall. Hardball, 7 00 eastern only on msnbc. Check it out. Elsewhere in the field of contenders, joe biden really now sort of versus the liberal left. Headlines today show the lib rap wing of the 2020 democrats are trying to blunt bidens message. For his part, biden seems to be avoiding the fray. At least so far. Washington post columnist dana milbank joins me. Good to have you back. Havent seen you in a while. Good to see you, craig. And playing out this weekend, 14 of the 2020 candidates in 2020 for the annual convention. Joe biden not there, hes campaigning in ohio. How much does joe biden even really need to be concerned about the socalled liberal wing of the party trying to blunt his momentum . Thats the important question, craig. Right now it looks as if he doesnt have to worry about it at all, because he has, first of all, such a commanding lead, and the other thing is, he has 22 opponents. So its getting very hard for anybody, whether its a Bernie Sanders or an Elizabeth Warren or anybody else to gain the traction against him. So im not so much sure that its an ideological challenge to him. Its just the natural thing that would occur when he is the frontrunner. Of course, hes seen as part of the democratic establishment. So that opens him up to all of this line of attack, but i think, you know, its just everybodys focused on him, because he has this prohibitive lead in the polls. We have no idea what will happen. The Democratic National committee is now moving to limit people from the second round of debates. That could cut the number of candidates down to six. Then maybe one of the others will be able to get traction running against him, but basically all they can do now is throw whatever theyve got at the frontrunner because they can barely see him, hes so far in front. Some opponents who did attend the convention what they had to say about him without mentioning him by name. Take a loonchts some democrats in washington believe the only changes we can get are tweaks and nudges. Our country is in a time of crisis. The time for small ideas is over. There is a debate among president ial candidates who have spoken to you here in this room, and those who have chosen for whatever reason not to be in this room. We cannot go back to the old ways. We have got to go forward with a new and progressive agenda. So heretofore theyve been playing nice, dana. Uhhuh. How much longer do we think that the Bernie Sanders and the Elizabeth Warrens and other concerns as you put it trying to break through, how long are they going to be able to continue to play nice and do that . I would say, what do we have . 25 days or so until the first debate . Thats as specifically when its going to begin. Everybody has to take on biden in some way. Its sort of a mirror image what we saw with trump in 2016. Theyre going to try to make it as sort of the moderate versus the progressives. Of course, theyre all progressives, its a matter of temperament versus the more idealistic ones sump as a warren or a sanders. No. I think its open season on joe right now, if hes getting it from all of this candidates as well as from the president , no matter what country he happens to be in. I think this is all to his advantage, because its its a whole bunch of different people firing for a whole bunch of different reasons, not one rises up and just continues to reinforce that he is the juggernaut whos in charge of this. Leave it there. Washington post, thank you so much. As dana mentioned, we will be following all the democratic contenders on the road to miami for the first democratic debate of the 2020 election. Only on msnbc, nbc and telemundo. A twoday event june 26th and 27th. Meanwhile, a quick check over in london. This look at President Trump inside Clarence House with Prince Charles and the duchess of cornwall as well. We are told they are all having tea right now in london. We will bring you more updates on this state visit as they unfold. A brewing storm for big tech back here, though. Why tech giants like google and amazon could face tougher scrutiny from federal regulators. And hows this for a warm welcome . President barack obama getting a standing ovation last night as he took in a game. Game two of the nba finals, actually. While it is still unclear which team takes home that trophy, the crowd decided on an mvp, apparently. [ cheers and applause ] theres so much scent in new gain scent blast detergent. Youll either love it or. Mmm. I guess not. New gain scent blast. Love it or hate it. Its intense. The power of big tech could soon be put to the test with an unprecedented antitrust review. U. S. Regulators reportedly splitting the task of overseeing google and amazon. Meaning big changes and even bigger fines could be in store. Msnbc Technology Contributor tony rahm writes about it in the Washington Post where he is the tech policy reporter. We should note here for the purposes of this conversation, jeff bezos, founder and executive of amazon also owns the Washington Post. Tony, you write the ftc would take the lead in reviewing amazon. The Justice Department gets google. What would that mean for guys like me and you potentially . Yeah. What it means is a lot more antitrust scrutiny coming for amazon and major ecommerce player and for google, a sprawling company that does everything from search and advertising to selfdriving cars. Now, theres been a lot of pressure for this kind of thing for a long time from democrats and republicans on capitol hill, and increasingly from some of the democrats running for the white house in 2020. But what we saw from the reporting this weekend is that the governments two major antitrust agencies privately have started divvying up the territory here, and what that suggests to us is the early makings of a potential review, potential investigation or other kinds of actions on the parts of Government Regarding big tech. Heard Privacy Concern answer facebook. A number of them. But google and amazon are not social media. So what would the potential focus be . Yeah. Absolutely right. Heard a lot ak privacy in Silicon Valley and a little less with respect to competition. The issue whether Companies Like google and amazon are too big and powerful and. It they wielded that dominance in their Respective Industries hurting Competitive Companies or harm consumers. We saw a flavor of this with google a few years ago when the u. S. Government last investigated the company. It was looking into whether google unfairly put its search results in a way it favored its services over others. The government at the time opted against bringing major penalties against google. These sorts of competitivy ue y issues what what could be under review by the government. Tony, you cover this beat closely. Seems to me as if there are, on both sides of the aisle now a growing number of people who think that the facebooks, the googles, the amazons, have all just gotten too big, too unwieldy . Is that the sense youre getting from lawmakers in washington as well . Yes. Absolutely right. Democrats and republicans who equally think these companies have just become too big and too powerful. They take different routes on exactly what should be done about it. More likely to hear democrats or folks on the left saying that perhaps these companies should be broken up. More likely to hear it expressed by folks on the right saying the Companies Use their power to seifal conservativeleeaning speech. Bias political people have poked holes in recently but together contributed to this feeling, this atmosphere, there could be more antitrust investigations and scrutiny of the tech industry. Its coming at a time when internationally this is the same as well. Europe has closely looked at the tech industry. A feeling perhaps the u. S. Government hasnt done enough and perhaps needs to do more. Tony on his exclusive reporting for the Washington Post. Thanks as always. Jared kushner, defending his fatherinlaw and boss President Trump against claims that hes a racist. In a rare new interview with axios the president s Senior Adviser was asked whether he had seen the president do anything racist or bigoted. So the answer is, no. Absolutely not. You cant not be a racist for 69 years then run for president and about a racist. When democrats call the president a racist theyre doing a disservice because of real racism in this country. What about i wasnt involved in that. I know you werent. Was it racist . Look, i know who the president is and not seen anything in him that is racist. Im joined now from london by White House Correspondent for pbs news hour and as msnbc contributor. Jonathan with axios, presses in three time birtherism is racist. What do you make of kushners response, or lack thereof . Jared kushners defense was no defense at all. Instead he defended himself personally saying i wasnt involved in this. He could have said the president was involved in birtherism for political reasons. Instead Jared Kushner had an Awkward Exchange where he couldnt defend the president s comments and tried to say the president wasnt can considered racist in the past. We know the president hasnt apologized for calling for the Death Penalty for the central park five. Black and brown boys wrongfully convicted. Important also to note even while president his comments after charlottesville when a young girl died pro defendanting nazis and the president said good people might go to a nazi rally. He says that wasnt seen at racist. Its important to say the president is landing in london and stirred controversy calling Meghan Markle a new mother, duchess of sussex and a woman of color nasty because in 2016 she called him a misogynist. Jared kushner trying to thread the line the president isnt race it while not really giving him a defense. A cringeworthy moment and Jared Kushner couldnt provide a defense as all. Also asked about kushners relationship with Saudi Crown Prince mohammed i want to call our attention to this scene. President trump arriving back at Buckingham Palace again. It looks like tea lasted about 30 minutes there. Again, President Trump on the move, back at Buckingham Palace, not far from where you are. Back to my question with regards to this kushner interview. Hes asked about his relationship with the crown prince, mbs agency hes hes kno the death of jamar khashoggi. How many conversations have you had about the murder of Jamal Khashoggi . Again, the discussions with individual palestinians or World Leaders or other people i keep those discussions to myself. The people who need to know about them in our government, that is related to the jobs theyre doing know about those discussions. The senator unanimously said Mohammed Bin Salman ordered it and members of the senate voted that way. I dont know what the administration is waiting for in terms of accountability . I believe theres a report theyre working on. Doing investigation and when they have the facts of the investigation it will be up to the president to make a determination on what he wants to do. Have we heard a sufficient answer so far from this administration on how the khashoggi murder has been handled . Handled . I dont think we have. Jared kushner said there is going to be some sort of report coming. I think he is saying hold on and lets wait and see what we can actually find out. Of course, that is going to be very frustrating for people, journalists at the Washington Post and others who are looking at this around the world looking at it and saying why isnt the American Government speaking out with a journalist living in america was murdered . Thank you so much for double duty in london. A new report in the New York Times is raising some new ethics questions about another member of the trump cabinet. The in depth story dives in the transportation. Secretary elaine chow, headlined a bridge to china. Michael forscythe is a member of the Investigations Team and one of four reporters who worked on this particular story. It is a very detailed article. You guys really get in the weeds a bit. Bottom line here of what you found. There is a lot of bottom lines. I think one thing to take home is that we all know that elaine chou, that her family is very politically influential in the united states. We discovered that the family is unique in that it is also politically powerful or influential in china with her relatives who are running a shipping company which her father founded 55 years ago. They have very close ties to senior leaders, are on boards of stateowned companies, Government Agencies that are normally reserved for chinese people. And that elaine chou has intersected with that company even though she has not held a formal position in the Company Since the 1970s. She is a face for the company and has promoted that including while she has been the transportation secretary. They did receive a gift from her father and he runs the shipping company. And his fortune does come from the shipping company. And then Mitch Mcconnell himself over the years, the family and i mean the extended family, there are five living sisters. They all married pretty well. All those people plus even those husbands relatives, many give generously to mcconnell and his related Political Action committees to the tune of 1. 1 million. They give exclusively to republicans. What kind of response have you gotten from the administration, if any, or secretary chou. We have had a lot of give and take with secretary chous office. We havent heard not too much of a response back small issues with some of the reporting media about the department. But nothing substantial yet since we published the story. We have obviously shared a lot of reporting with them over the last few weeks letting them know what we found and their responses and the companys responses are throughout the story. It stems from the controversy over the trump administrations order cuwe have more from th pentagon. What can you tell us about this message acting secretary Patrick Shanahan delivered to the administration . Acting secretary shanahan has been traveling through the region where all this happened just over a week ago when President Trump was in japan visiting u. S. Navy sailors stationed there. So acting secretary shanahan is traveling with the press corps and has been forced to answer question after question about what he knew, what the navy knew and when. So the latest that we got on him was sunday while on his way to seoul when there was a statement put out by his spokesperson saying he had directed the pentagon chief of staff to talk to the White House Military Office and explain to them that they cannot be politicizing the u. S. Military with actions like the direction to obscure or hide the uss mccain while President Trump was there visiting. Chuck todd pressed the acting white house chief of staff on this issue. Seriously . Is somebody going to get fired for this . No. We have heard him saying no one will get fired. He does not intend to open up Inspector General investigation into the incident. We know the questions are going to keep coming from reporters, from members of congress about exactly how this happened and how it got to the point where the head of u. S. Navy seventh fleet in japan became awar of the request, how that made its way that high up into the chain of command in the navy. Thank you so much. That is going to wrap up this hour of msnbc live.
