Well have much more on that story in just a few moments. First, the trump media blitz, two more rallies this weekend makes four. Count them, four for the week. Add in the last minute white house events, the fox news interviews, and the occasional Kanye West Oval Office rants ant superman and alternative universes ask you have a republican messaging machine no longer focused on the unifying aspects of brett kavanaugh. Today the limelight now firmly back on the president himself. Here to talk about whether that helps or hurts republicans just 25 days to the midterms, eugene scott, political reporter for the Washington Post, eli stokels and tim kearney, commentary editor for the washington examiner. Let me show everyone a small sample of what we mean. Is a mere taste of the week in trump. On behalf of our nation, i want to apologize to brett and the entire kavanaugh family. The democrats have become too extreme, and theyve become, frankly, too dangerous to govern. Theyve gone wacko. I need your help this election day, november 6th, to stop the radical democrat mob from trying to take it away. When we see you campaign out there with kanye west in the future . Well, i could see it. I mean, you know, i could see it. Now bull [ bleep ] with a beep on it, however you want to do it, five seconds delay. Love this guy right here. Let me give this guy a hug right here. I love this guy right here. Thats really nice. Were going to actually unpack some of that kanye stuff in a moment. Its going to take some time. L eli, how effective is his talk of a democratic mob as a rallying cry . Weve started to see a number of prominent republican senators picking up that language. Yeah, i mean, that is now the republican talking point, and you know, its ironic. Its another selffulfilling prophesy of this presidency. President trump provoked these reactions. Hes brought protesters out in the streets from day one of his administration, and now hes turning that around and portraying them as an obstructionist mob toch. To a lot of people who are predisposed to see that, its an easy sell. I think, you know, the question is does it resonate, does it make any sense to people beyond the base, beyond the already converted . I talked to a lot of people who were attending his rally in Council Bluffs on tuesday night, and they didnt seem their anger did not match the president s. They were there to support him. They agree with him generally. They repeat his talking point that hes done so many things already, but they were not nearly as aggrieved as he sounded, at least before they went into the rally. When youre listening to the crowd reacting to him, its a little bit of a different story. I think its telling where the president is going. Hes going mostly to industrial and rural parts of the country. Hes not going to the suburbs of dallas where mike pence was campaigning this week. Hes not going to orange county, california, new jersey, hes not going to those places that used to be really important to the republican coalition. As he said in the time interview thats out this morning, he has remade the republican party, and hes making it look a lot more like his Winning Coalition and a lot different than it used to be. Not going to places where he can grow the base, just going to places he can throw more red meat to the base. Eugene, you hear trump out there now sometimes, and it starts to sound like hes projecting a bit, using some of the language that his critics have used to describe him and his behaviors. But do we think that making earn scared of your opponent, do we think that that works here . Its a classic playbook tactic . I think to elis point it works with the base. It doesnt work with the independent voters that helped deliver the white house to trump in 2016 who polls say hes lost over the last two years. What people are noticing is the president caused women who are advocating for Sexual Assault survivors angry mobs, but he calls people who are advocating for the preservation of confederate memorials in charlottesville very fine people, and so he seems to be really selective in who he paints as dangerous and extreme while ignoring other groups that many voters in america outside of his base are really worried about. Tim, finish this sentence for me. Kanye wests bizarre appearance at the white house helps President Trump because . I mean, i think theres actually a really interesting story to tell about kanye west at the white house. Part of the reason he does all this stuff is to get, you know, to trigger the libs as they tend to say. To get the freakouts from places like msnbc and all my friends here, but one of the really interesting things to come out of that kanye west thing, more interesting than triggering the libs, he talked about how without a father he sort of looked for a father figure, and he found it in trump. Thats not the most interesting thing to come out of that is absolutely the most interesting thing to come out. Whyd you ask me to finish the question if you knew the answer to it, craig. It is interesting if youre willing to look past the big headlines. I think your response is disingenuous. Its not disingenuous at all. I was expounding on this on twitter. I will write my next column and put you in the first sentence. Dear craig melvin, heres why kanye wests searching for a father figure was the most interesting part of that white house thing is because thats where you found this working class white base. It was in places where the communities and the families were crumbling. People who voted for obama, then they voted for trump. Thats where trump is going. Hes going to the polices where people feel totally detached. Their families or communities fell apart. Eugene you wrote about the kanye appearance yesterday, and were using a snippet of your article because you mentioned our interview with charlamagne tha god. Trump seems to think kanye west speaks for black americans. Kanye speaks for kanye. What do you think, eugene that both of these men got out of this meeting . They both were trending on twitter yesterday, which i think is very important to both of them. We know that the president likes to be in front of people and likes attention and no network have been covering the rallies the way they have in the past, and kanye west is constantly trying to promote his work, and he has a project coming out very soon. I think what midterm voters are focused on most are issues related to health care, issues related to the economy, and if kanye was supposed to be there to give the president an idea of where black americans stand on these issues and what he could do differently to improve his standing with them, he didnt do that, and he simply drew attention to just how scattered his messaging was and how disconnected he is from the progressive base by dismissing very real issues like racism that many black voters care about deeply and believe that donald trump himself stoked. Eli, you know, not to belabor this thing, but you know, i did find it to be quite possibly one of the most bizarre Oval Office Meetings since ive gotten into this business. This idea that kanye wests wife, she goes to the white house to advocate on behalf of criminal Justice Reform and manages to help negotiate the release of a woman who had been imprisoned for a drug conviction, and most people would acknowledge for far too long. Kanye west goes to the white house and hes showing the president pictures of airplanes. In terms of what was gained from a policy standpoint or any sort of legislative standpoint, what was gained . I dont think anything was gained from a policy standpoint. I mean, it was completely bizarre. You know, you had the president sitting across the desk just listening to this crazy monologue for over ten minutes. It was really interesting to see him as a bystander and observer of one of those monologues in the oval office for a change. But you know, it was just it was one of these things. The oval office, you never see papers on the desk when the cameras come in. You see it as a sound stage. The president brings the cameras in, and he performs, and yesterday it was him and kanye performing creating content i think tim is right about one upside being that it kind of triggers the libs on twitter. I think for this president you see just how much that montage you played at the start of the segment when you showed just a snippet of the things the president has said out loud this week. He is constantly talking and creating content for the public to consume, and hes doing it more now i think with fewer constraints in terms of a functioning communications department, advisers who can tell him no. This is the president kind of let loose here in the last month of a midterm election, and he really he has always believed hes his own best communicator. Whatever the message is, even if its crazy, even if its just meant to be entertainment, whether its trying to incite or push a message of fear at the rally, this is the president. Hes constantly talking and were all held captive to it. We have heard the president at a number of rallies speaking on behalf of marsha blackburn. A vote for marsha is a vote for me. He said that at a number of rallies. If youve got an economy thats humming along the way this one is humming along for many americans, unemployment as low as it is for most people in most places, if you have two conservative Supreme Court picks under your belt already, and youre not even two years in, why not run on those things. Why run on trump when we know that his unfavorability numbers go ahead. Youre right about the unfavorability numbers, and it would be good for him to think about it. If youre asking me to read his mind, i think he realizes that he won in part because he wasnt a typical republican, and that when you look at conor lamb won that special election in pennsylvania for a house seat, conor lamb was running against the typical republican. The typical republican doesnt win in trump country. So as you guys were saying, trump is looking to his base. He knows that trump is a better sell than the republican establishment. Thats why hes trying to attach himself to these people. Its going to be a real struggle to get those working class, the rust belt voters who voted for trump, to say, well, were republican now. I dont think he has brought them into the party yet. I think hes brought them into trump, and now hes trying to bring them into the party. Eli, thank you, eugene thank you, tim i look forward to your article. Thank you. Storm recovery. Several Major International stories we are following, the first the story that we reported at the top of the hour, the release of andrew brunson. He is the american evangelical from North Carolina held in turkey for more than two years. Nbcs chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel is in turkey. Tell us how this came about. Reporter well, this is a long and fascinating story, really. So pastor brunson, who had been a longtime resident in turkey was arrested about two years ago, and he was accused of being in contact with what turkey considers terrorists, cukurdish Militants Group and people who turkey believes is responsible for launching a failed coup against the president. He was charged with supporting terrorists and supporting coup plotters. He has been in jail and later in house arrest for two years, and there have been efforts to release him. There have been efforts, a lot of pressure put on turkey from the United States to secure his release, and there was an attempt a couple of months ago where the u. S. Thought it was pretty close to a deal, and then were told that the deal went south because, frankly, President Trump issued some tweets insulting turkey. The president of turkeyer erdow took that as an insult, and the pastor remained in custody. Today a judge just sentenced him but sentenced him to time served and let him go, and he is in the process of getting out of this country. I dont think the timing is a coincidence because of what has just happened, allegedly happened, at the saudi consulate over a week ago where i am right now. Turkey needs friends. Turkey needs the United States. Turkey needs to give the impression that it is building an International Consensus against what it believes was a saudi murderer on turkish soil and does not want to confront saudi arabia alone, wants to have powerful friends. You are standing outside the saudi consulate there in istanbul. Let me ask you about the other big story out of turkey, the disappearance and possible death, likely death of that u. S. Based saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. Whats the latest on that, richard . Reporter so, Jamal Khashoggi was a im saying was because the presumption was that he was killed. A turkish official told nbc news that quote, turkey is 100 confident that jamal is unfortunately dead and he has been killed by the 15 saudis who were in turkey for a brief amount of time. Turkey believes that saudi arabia sent on two chartered planes a 15member hit team that they were laying in wait in cars and advance vans in this neighb. When khashoggi went into this consulate to sort out some paperwork last tuesday around 1 00 p. M. , that he never emerged and that over the course of roughly two hours while he was inside that he was murdered and then you have this report from the Washington Post today, which says that turkey, according to the Washington Post has audio and video recordings to back up that claim. Audio and video recordings in which you can apparently hear and see khashoggi being tortured, interrogated and killed. I must say nbc news has not seen these or heard these recordings and cant verify them, but we can say that turkish officials said that he is 100 confident that khashoggi is dead. Richard engel for us in istanbul. Thank you, sir. The other Major International story that we are following on this friday, one of the most powerful officials of the Catholic Church in america has signaled his intent to step down. Pope francis has accepted the resignation of washington, d. C. Archbish archbishop donald wuerl. This comes after a report implicates wuerl. In his letter, pope francis praised the knnobility of the decision no not cover up his actions. Where do we go from here . Reporter well, craig, the content of the letter is exactly the opposite of what critics were expecting in that sense. Now, weve been waiting for pope francis to accept the resignation tendered by the cardinal early september, only a few weeks after his name popped up more than 200 times in that damning report in pennsylvania, so today he accepted the resignation, but he also published a letter that was, we can say, affectionate, supportive of the cardinal. Now, in the letter thaft was published on the website of the archdiocese of washington, the pope essentially implied that he was not guilty of covering up crimes but of making some mistakes. And im quoting the letter that is signed by the pope, and because of it it was noble of the cardinal to resign, nevertheless for the good of the church and that the pope was proud of the cardinal and thanked him and because of it he could stay on, not as the archbishop of washington but as the apostolic administrator of the archdiocese, which in church language, well, that means caretaker until a successor is found, craig. As parts of florida were dealing with the devastating effects of Hurricane Michael, President Trump hosting a bit of a celebrity road show at the white house yesterday with kanye west and others. Dan maduri with a syndicated radio show, called news talk florida, a wildly popular show in the sunshine state. I want to play a snippet of that event in the oval office yesterday, and talk to you about it on the other side. Here it is. Trump is on his heros journey right now, and he might have expected to have a crazy [ bleep ] like kanye west run up and support, but best believe we are going to make america great. I know youve got your finger on the pulse of florida. How are floridians reacting to that part of the story . It just continues to show that this white house just it has become a side showesque circus event that takes place, and people right now in florida, especially the panhandle. Theyre more focused about their homes you saw that there with your msnbc reporter. People are more focused about their homes. I had conversations with people down there. Hi a friend call me and say, dan, youre not going to believe this, my brother, my mother, my father, my fathers friend, they all lost their homes. Five people lost their homes. Thats not a unique story. Thats happening all over the panhandle area. If i was trump, id be very focused on this. Remember correctly that the panhandle and that specific area, those were the voters that dragged trump across the finish line and won florida for him against Hillary Clinton in 2016. Its a hot bed republican area. Its basically southern alabama, and if youre trump, youve got to really be focused on this because how are these people going to get to the polls. Are they even concerned about voting november 6th. Its going to change the trajectory of the state of florida. You think the hurricane is going to have a measurable impact on that closely watched governors race, closely watched senate race . Absolutely. Theres only two ways in and out, 10 and 92. Are these people who just lost everything, lost multiple houses within one family, are they going to be focused on who theyre voting for come november 6th . Theyre going to be fully focused on rebuilding their life and trying to put it back together again, ask theyre going to be totally disenfranchised with politics altogether because desantis and gillum, they have polarized this and politicized this to a way that is really disgusting to a lot of voters. I want to talk about that in second. Governor rick scott, he was criticized by some for running this ad ahead of Hurricane Michaels landfall. Heres the ad. Florida governor rick scott warned about the significant storm surge. At my direction, all tolls have been waived across florida roadways. The governor really is getting out in front of this. We can rebuild your home, but we can not rebuild your life. The latest poll taken before the hurricane, its a poll, i believe thats is that the cnn poll . Thats the mason dixon poll, excuse me. Shows neck in neck. Its a neck in neck race right now. Of course Governor Scott running against senator bill nelson. His handling of the hurricane, is that going to help or hurt him at the polls . Or do we know . I think its going to help himdramatically. Governor rick scott went from one of the most hated individuals in florida politics, everybody hated this guy except for the tea party back when he ran in 2010, i think it was, and then irma happened. When irma took place, he got ahead of it. He issued a state of emergency for the entire state. He put himself into a position where he showed leadership. He showed action. He had the whole shots of him wearing his navy cap, of power trucks driving here and there, and it really did show that he had and was a leader and therefore you saw a dynamic shot up in the polls to 68 favorability, and if it wasnt for irma, scott would have no chance against bill nelson. The hurricane scott is seeing this as a gift. Hall htallahassee mayor andr gillum, hes up by five in the latest nbc poll. There it is that nbc marist poll shows gillum up. How do we think this race shakes out over the next threeplus weeks . I think its going to be gillum. I think its going to be gillum completely. Theres been 18 straight polls where gillum has had a decisive lead over ron desantis. Nobody knows who desantis is. Up to this point nobody knew who Andrew Gillum was, but they both have gotten themselves to this position. Gillum has the charisma. He has the ability to relate to people, to touch people in a way that desantis simply does not. Think about this from an Andrew Gillum standpoint. If he wins and becomes the first democrat governor in the state of florida in 22 years, hell be the most important and powerful democrat in the entire country. Everyones going to go down to kiss the rings of Andrew Gillum come 2020. Its going to be a fascinating dynamic thats going to shape up within the state of florida. They are pouring a bunch of money into that race. Thank you, thanks for coming by. I do appreciate you, dan. Speaking of a bunch of money, texas senator ted cruzs democratic opponent breaking fundraising records. Beto orourke, that campaign has raised 38. 1 million in the Third Quarter of 2018. Have you been hurt, though . Media what is speculating, yeah, its not always pleasant, of course, but i know what is right and what is wrong and what is true or not true. Nbc White House Correspondent Kelly Odonnell joins me now with the latest. Kelly o, what more did we learn from that interview with the first lady . Reporter it is extraordinary, craig, because nearly two years into her time as first lady, and it is so rare that we hear from her responding to questions, and a limited number of Public Events shes done and speeches, she has really been e lilusive in interacting with reporters. While first ladies often work on a whole separate schedule, her lack of accessibility has been notable. Obviously, now, she is willing to address some of these very difficult questions about the state of her personal life, and she did so, and notably much like her husband put the media in a sort of a barrier of responsibility talking about that as being upsetting to her. Less revealing about her personal interactions with the president. She says they are fine. She did address very, it seems frankly, a question that was put to her about the fact that Rudy Giuliani who serves as the president s outside lawyer on some of the issues weve seen play out with the russia investigation and with the whole Stormy Daniels situation, he had at one point talked about about the first lady knowing that some allegation of infidelity was untrue. She was asked about this, and her answer is quite interesting. I never talked to mr. Giuliani. Why do you think he came out and said that . I dont know. You need to ask him. You mentioned you still have a good marriage. Do you love your husband . Yes, we are fine. Yes. Its what media speculate and its gossip. Its not always correct stuff. Reporter theyve been married about 13 years now, and she is taking some steps to be more public as a first lady. This trip was significant, and in some ways, craig, the sort of interaction that she has now means that she is on the record for some of these topics, and so if she does more interactions with reporters down the line, not that they wouldnt be asked again, she can at least say she has answered or responded in some way and perhaps that will open the door to her being more accessible. Well have to see. Kelly odonnell for us at the white house. Thank you. Heres something that will make you smile on a friday. New charges of Voter Suppression in one of the nations most watched upcoming elections. The governors race in georgia, Stacey Abrams and brian kemp, a new report by New York Times and the Associated Press finds the office of brian kemp, georgias secretary of state and the republican nominee for governor in novembers election has stalled more than 53,000 voter applications. The list includes a disproportionate high number of black voters. Kemps opponent, Stacey Abrams tweeting this yesterday. We will work to process the 53,000, but we dont have to wait for justice. Lets bring in sarah jackel. She is general counsel for vote. Org. They are not involved in the lawsuit here and the legal wranglings over this. Brian kemp has denied the charges. A lawsuit has been filed. How do we expect this to play out over the next 25 days . Well, its unclear how the courts will rule in the case of the 53,000, georgians who sought to register to vote in this upcoming election and whose registrations have now been placed in jeopardy by this controversial exact matching program. What i will say is that its my understanding that these registrants can still vote in the upcoming election, and i just want to stress that to everybody in georgia if you are one of the 53,000 people whos been placed on this list. You can nevertheless vote if you show the proper i. D. What is the exact matching program, sarah . Its a way that the secretary of state in georgia seeks to match up the names and identifying information placed on a Voter Registration application with what is in federal and state databases. Most typically dmv records, and so with the exact matching, if theres some difference between what is on the registration application and what is in the dmv database down to something as simple as missing hyphen or a small typo, they will deem that registration pending or invalid. You wrote an oped in the times on the myth of the lazy nonvoter. Listening to reasons for low turnout, among them you wrote lack of a mandated i. D. In some states. Out of state students are unable to vote where they are going to school. Election day, during the week when many people cant take the time away from work to vote. And laws in some states bar convicted felons who have served their time from voting. Overall, the u. S. Ranking 19th in voter turnout among the world democracies. How have these things individually and certainly collectively, how have they not outraged people all over this country . Truthfully, i think a lot of people dont know about them, and they dont understand the significance of them on their own, and as you said, the cumulative significance about them in recent years, people have started to learn a lot more about gerrymandering and the role that plays in diluting votes and the role that stricter voter i. D. Laws play in suppressing turnout overall particularly among poor people, young people, and people of color. I think people are learning more about it, and i think people are beginning to become outraged about it. I think it takes more education and more people out there talking about this. There are those who contend that we have a voter fraud problem in this country. Where do you fall on that spectrum . Do we have a legitimate voter fraud problem in this country or no . There is no evidence of widespread fraud or really any fraud. You are correct that most of these laws, the reason that they have been passed or the purpose that has been given for passing strict voteeen given for preventing voter fraud, but there is no evidence that there is nothing but small numbers of voter ra fraud fraud country. And sarah jackel from voter. Org, thank you. And some people had a terrifying moment when a 14yearold went knocking on the mans door after being lost on the way to school. And instead of getting help, he was shot at. At first i could not believe that he was holding, and then i thought that he is not going to try to shoot me. If you saw his face, you would have known that it is his look, and that is the look that he had. He didnt look angry, but looked like that. And that footage is shown to a jury where Jeffrey Zeigler is being charged for shooting at this young boy and he said that he slipped causing the gun the go off. Say teach me more into your voice remote to get started. Made in america, online disinformation. Meant to the mislead voters in the midterm elections in november. Ooh the New York Times is saying that we are seeing a spreading of there is more disinformation to other americans. And now joining us the author of make war. And are we seeing the russian strategy of 2016 . Unfortunately, it is not fake news, but it is happening, and what is playing is out that if if you are thinking of the the cyber war as the hacking of networks, like war is the hacking of people on the networks by driving ideas viral through a mix of likes and lies and it is of course hitting our own election. It is playing out in brazil. It hit the mexican election and you name it. And times sites one web operation in particular and right wing news and sites them cites them as an example of a site that spreads disinformation and did it in the kavanaugh hearings. Is it the presence of a site like that by itself or the fact that people retweet and share these stories on facebook. How does one fixed story becoming a trend that is seen by million . What is playing out now, but also with the effect of the Russian Campaign in 2016, it target asset of users who then share that with the rest of their network, and for example, there was one russianrun site that posed as if it were a tennessee republican, and it hit tens of thousands of readers, but then in turn, each of them were sharing it with the hundreds and thousands and sometimes millions of followers and the result of the one russian site was the seventh most read account on all of social media, and more than most media sites and more than most politician, and you name it, and the point is that these tactics are happening again, because they work. And in many ways it is like sports and a r war and people model after what others are doing. And how do they decide which users to target initial ly . Well, that is the great thing of the social media and the scary thing is that we veal so much of ourselves so that you can microtarget in a way, and figure out everything from the geographic location to what color you respond to more, and then in the targeting we dont just hit you, but we then hit everyone else that shares those characteristics. And that is where the revelations of social media is going to be spun back against us, and the whole thing here is that there are a new rules of the game and we need to understand them, because we are targets in it, but we also decide what wins out by our own clicks. Is it a losingt b battle to n try to educate the users to be weary of what they see online. Is that an exercise on futility . No, it is what is needed. The challenge here is that the United States, we may have invented the internet, but we are the nation now that others point to and say, dont let what happened to them happen to us. And so in turn, we can learn from what they have put into play. And so if you are looking at what estonia, sweden and some of the nation who are on the front line of this and in particular the russian disinformation campaigns first, thatey have Digital Literacy campaigns that is equivalent to the Public Health campaigns there. Is no one Silver Bullet in it, but there are things to do and part of it is about understanding the new nature of this system and responding appropriately and in government, in business and you and i as individuals. I believe that the old saying is that the lie gets halfway around the world before the truth even has a chance to get its pants on. And it moves faster now than ever before, because the networks were designed not to reward ver racity, but viral ti and that is where in turn there is a greater response needed by the Technology Companies themselves, because they are running what is in effect, the nervous system of the modern world. We are using it for dating and business but a new battle space from marketing wars to the real wars. Peter sanger, it is a fascinating book like war. And enjoy the weekend. That is going to the wrap up this hour of msnbc live and Andrea Mitchell reports starts right now. Tortured and murdered and gruesome details of what happened to americanbased saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. They say they have video to prove that he was killed inside of the consulate. And coming up, more breaking news from turkey as an american pastor is released after two years in prison. And deadly storm and more
