Shulk shulkin, i want to talk about a little bit of breaking news were getting in the Stormy Daniels case. Apparently her attorneys motion to depose the president has been thwarted in court. What are you hearing . Well, as is the case in so many things around the trump white house, were learning through twitter, through michael aven natys twitter feed he is putting out a series of tweets that deal with the legal action of the president and Michael Cohen concerning their efforts to break the 130,000 contract for the nondisclosure agreement. Avenatti is tweeting that the court has said his request is premature for the deposition of the president and Michael Cohen. And he goes on to sicite some o the language of the courts ruling on this. Suggesting, its only from his side at this point, that the issue of whether this will end up in arbitration, which is what the president and Michael Cohen would prefer, because thats the way the nondisclosure agreement was originally crafted, any dispute would be handled in arbitration which, by its nature, is not public. The attorney and Stormy Daniels are trying to break that so she can more fully explain her story in public, in a Court Setting and for the power of the deposition to get Michael Cohen to speak and perhaps the president , if thats granted. That would be questions about did he know about the 130,000 payment, was cohen reimbursed, those sorts of issues that are around this case. Avenatti is saying he intends to refile after cohen and the limited liability corporation, which was the original party in this nondisclosure agreement file. So its procedural it sounds like. Avenatti is saying it bodes well for his side. We would expect him to do that. But this is just moments ago as he is saying the first attempt to get the president deposed is at least on hold for now. Ill defer to the lawyers who can analyze this a bit further but thats happening now, kristen. Kelly, a lot of breaking news last night at the white house that i want to get your take on. A new va secretary will be nominated. Ronny jackson, the president s personal physician, va secretary David Shulkin is out. And yet weve heard nothing from the president all week. So where do things stand now in terms of this latest staff shakeup and silence from the president . Well, this event here in richfield, ohio, which is southeast of cleveland, and is an area where were at a local 18 Training Facility. So this is the place that the type of voter that performed well for the president comes to work in a place like this. Hell be talking infrastructure. This is his first public event in a series of days. Because were on the eve of a holiday weekend, he heads to florida today. We dont expect any Public Events for days to come. That will give us basically all of last week, through this week, just today, and then back to out of public view. It also comes at a time when hes made a big change, going to his most personal inner circle types with Ronny Jackson as his next nominee for va secretary. Part of whats surprising about this despite the David Shulkin, was an obama era holdover, the president had been effusive in his praise for him not so long ago. I also want to express our appreciation for secretary of shulkin who is implementing the dramatic reform throughout the va. I have no doubt it will be properly implemented, right, david . It better be, david. Well never have to use those word. Well never have to use those words on our david. And that of course playing off of the tag line from the apprentice, never have to use those words, meaning youre fired. Well, not so much. That has come to pass now. Shulkin is out. The president is hoping his personal physician will be confirmed by the senate. For what is a massive job. There has been tension about whether or not there should be more privatization of the Services Provided for the va. That has long been sort of a tension point. Because va hospitals, although they are plentiful, are not everywhere. Some services they provide are certainly battlefield related. Others, medical care that is more typical in nature, might be provided by a local doctor with va paying for it. So that debate has been going on for a while. The president sees more value in more privatization of those services. So, again, a big shakeup. One that had been rumored for a while. As you well know, kristen. And now is finally happened. We didnt have the goaway friday weve seen a lot of times of this administration. Perhaps because its spring break time. Wednesday was the wave off day for David Shulkin. Kristen. Just the latest in more than two dozen highlevel departures in the trump administration. Kelly odonnell, thanks for that. Garrett, i want you to pick up on where kelly left off. Garretts doing double duty for us. Hes at the white house but, garrett, i know you always have your capitol hill hat on as well. This is going to be a tough confirmation process potentially because people are already making the point that Ronny Jackson has never run an agency, much less the second Largest Agency in the federal government. Whats the mood, the anticipation, ahead of potential confirmation hearings . Well, kristen, this will now be the third major confirmation that the senate will have to do this spring. Essentially simultaneously. Remember, they have to confirm a new secretary of state, a new director of the cia and now a new director of the department of Veterans Affairs. First of those two, the secretary of state and the cia nominees, are both controversial. They have long records. We know about their records. Ronny jackson, dr. Jackson, will be controversial in a different way. He has no political record to speak of and no Management Experience of anything even remotely approaching the size of the organization he would be leading if he does get confirmed. Yesterday, we saw sort of tepid statements from a number of senators, key senators, overseeing that confirmation process. Folks on the Veterans Affairs committee dont know jackson. They have in many cases literally never met him. The good news if youre dr. Jackson or the trump white house, theres not necessarily a huge appetite to pick this fight. Democrats are far more concerned about mike pompeo, about gina has pell in particular leading. You have a couple of red state Democratic Senators who are fighting for reelection right now, including the ranking democrat on that committee, jon tester, whos competing in montana, a state that donald trump won overwhelmingly. Part of his pitch is his ability to work with President Trump. Its tough to see them scuttling dr. Jackson or trying to fight him tooth and nail. Unless jackson comes into these meetings woefully underprepared or stumbles in some major way in his confirmation hearing and shows himself to be deeply unquail fewed in that way. As weve seen from his one moment in the sunshine so far, he certainly presents pretty well on television. Part of the reason everyone assumes he was picked for this job in the first place. Before i let you go, we know the Incoming National security adviser, someone who doesnt require confirmation, john bolton, is going to be meeting with the defense secretary mattis later on this hour. Well track that very closely. These are two men who have clashed when it comes to Foreign Policy. Theyve never met before. If you look at their policy positions on paper, they dont exactly line up. What are we expecting from this meeting . Yes, matt is is probably the most diplomatic person you could have in terms of the armed forces of the United States. John bolton known for hawkish views and general attitude in favor of using military force in the places where it can be used. Perhaps his critics would argue in places where it shouldnt. Mattis has said publicly he has not met bolton but he looks forward to meeting him today. Looks forward to trying to work with him. What well see today is essentially just one shot of the two men meeting each other outside of the pentagon. The rest of their meeting is expected to be private. As these two men try to feel each other out and where they can Work Together. But i think the white house needs the perception at least to be these two men not be at odds with each other. Given especially mattis broad, broad support and the broad level of trust that the public has in him and also that members of congress have in him. He is, by and large, i think i can say, without reservation, members of congress favorite cabinet secretary. Hes someone they trust to do the right thing. If mattis and bolton can be seen to Work Together it will go a long way towards quieting fears about bolton being so close to the president. Its a very important point. Garrett haake, thank you for that. Kelly odonnell, beforehand, covering all of the angles. We appreciate it. His replacement in january conducted a physical examination of President Trump and addressed a range of questions about the president s fitness for office. Take a listen. In summary, the president s Overall Health is excellent. In my experience, the president , you know, hes very sharp and, you know, hes very articulate when he speaks to me. I think he will remain fit for duty. And even for the remainder of another term if hes elected. One of the moments that endeared him to President Trump. Phillipe reinus to then secretary of state hillary clinton. And our other guest, chief of staff for the department of urban development, hired and fired by the administration as a result of a critical oped he wrote about mr. Trump before he took office. I want to start with the breaking news. I want to start to talk about the va secretary, but this news about Michael Avenattis attempt to depose the president , its been blocked on a procedural matter. Phillipe, it might move forward, despite what we saw today. What do you make of this development . Is this something that democrats are potentially going to say hey, were not touching this, because its a hot potato . Well, i dont think it needs to be touched because Michael Avenatti seems to be moving this along very well on his own. I imagine that this is not the last trick he has up his sleeve. So without being a lawyer and knowing whats next, i know theres a next. And he will not stop until he has moved his clients case forward to a point where he is putting pressure on the president to appear in court or a deposition. Temporary win for the president. This issue has loomed over the president. The president got shouted questions about it today. The white house wants to turn the page. It goes without saying. Right. Does this give them a little reprieve . Temporarily. In the long term, when you think about Michael Avenatti, hes more than likely going to file another motion. Theres precedent to have a sitting president sit before counsel and answer questions, ie, bill clinton. The excuse that the president is too busy to do that is inexcusable at this point. I think at some point in time, theyre doing a masterful job of baiting trump. And though trump has done a good job of not responding, we all know its only a matter of time before he feels he has to respond. I think right now, in the long term, i expect trump is going to feel the need to say something. Pick up on that point. Its remarkable that we havent heard from the selfproclaimed counterpuncher all week since that 60 minutes interview. A lot of people have been saying and hes been getting asked is there someone advising him to be quiet. I think the reason this time its different is because he has been in this situation many times before. He has faced litigation, reco regarding his relationships, regarding his affairs. He has millions of dollars at stake. The quickest way to get donald trump to behave is when his pocketbook is possibly going to be hit. I think this is just himself. I also imagine without getting into their personal lives that hes in a little bit of the dog house at home. He may be, in fact. Is h shermichael, ive been talking to folks at the white house and i know hes been talking to advisers about how should i responr respo respond. Phillipe has a very pointed analysis of this. But do you expect him to shift strategy . Is this strategy working . This is really the first time weve seen him hold his punches. I think again, i think its working now. As it relates to listening to advisers, trump has proven himself as someone who does not listen to advisers. This is the same president that is considering firing his chief of staff and not replacing him. So when you think about a lot of the chaos and dysfunction that comes from the white house, it is in part because of the president s inability and unwillingness to actually listen to advisers. So, again, this is a temporary victory. In the long term, im almost certain trump will respond. Gentleman, stand by. I want to bring in now more on the breaking developments on the Stormy Daniel controversy. Ari melber for a little perspective here. You hear the conversation im having with my panel, that this might be a temporary reprieve for President Trump. Is that correct analysis . This ruling basically is saying now is not the time to get to the bottom of whether the president may some day be deposed in this matter. So this is a rejection of that in the near term. The president will not be ordered to be deposed in the li this time but it leaves open the entire debate for later. We all know from watching the supreme court, to pick a more Important Court than this particular case, they will often says were not looking that the now. It doesnt tell you a, if they will look at it later and how they will ultimately rule. If the white house does not like this story, which no one in the judicial system right now forcing the president to do anything or be deposed on this matter. But ari, does it raise questions about the strategy, this very tough strategy that were seeing being unleashed by Michael Avenatti and Stormy Daniels . They were going full speed ahead, 60 minutes, this new court filing to try to depose the president. Now theyve been blocked. Does it raise questions about whether this is an effective strategy or whether Michael Avenatti overplayed his hand . The question about the hand that was played and the Public Domain and 60 minutes is very much alive. We know more americans watched that than any episode of 60 minutes in a decade. I think people can watch that and make up their own minds about whether its remarkable to have a sitting president effectively trying to silence a woman over what is only alleged to be a quote unquote conscieenl affair. Why go to these lengths to silence someone . Or they feel too much time has been given to this. The legal question is, is the strategy working . We dont know yet. I would just say this happens pretty routinely. Lawyers make moves. They want to push things ahead. This is the court saying that because of the legal status and i can get into it, although i dont think the details matter that much in this particular case. But because of the notion that mr. Trump and mr. Cohen have not formerly responded yet, theyre not actually compelling in the eyes of the court an arbitration proceeding, its not ripe yet. So one way to look at it is the musician nas used to say he was always on schedule, never on time. Theres an element of that here. Of the schedule for a fight over the deposition will still come in the future. This is not the time. Thats what the court is saying to mr. Avenatti. Ari thank you, for diving into this breaking coverage. I do want to get one thought on the new incoming potential va secretary, Ronny Jackson has been nominated. Phillipe, do you expect him to be confirmed . This is someone whos never headed up an agency, much less the second Largest Agency in the federal government. He seems like a fine doctor and fine naval officer and the pooh who people who served under obama speak high lly of him but to ru an agency that large . And there has never been a no vote against a va nominee since the department was formed. This might be the time to change that record. Shermichael, if he is confirmed, he takes over an agency beset with problems for years. This is an uphill battle in a way. It is. Its riddled by scandal. We have no idea what his priorities are going to be once he becomes secretary of the va. Also, another big major question is privatization of the va. Thats been a Big Conversation thats been going on in the past several weeks. There are major conservative leaning organizations such as the koch brothers, veterans organizations, pushing conservatives on the hill to consider privatization of certain elements of the va. Where does he stand on that . We dont know. Phillipe, shermichael, ari, thank you. President trump just arriving in cleveland where hell talk up his infrastructure plan at this hour, but will his white house shakeups and legal troubles overshadow his message . The former head of President Trumps Legal Team Denies discussing pardons with lawyers for Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort but could john dowd have moved to obstruct justice . Also, the funeral for Stephon Clark about to get under way as members of the community vow this type of shooting will never happen again. Our own reverend al sharpton is set to deliver the eulogy and he joins me next with his message. Stay with us. Pssst. What . I switched to geico and got more. More savings on Car Insurance . Aha. And an awardwinning mobile app. That is more. Oh, theres more. Mobile id cards, emergency roadside service. More technology. I can even add a new driver. Right from her phone geico. Expect great savings and a whole lot more. This time, its his turn. You have 4. 3 minutes to yourself. This calls for a taste of cheesecake. Philadelphia cheesecake cups. Rich, creamy cheesecake with real strawberries. Find them with the refrigerated desserts. You know whats not awesome . Gigspeed internet. With real strawberries. When only certain people can get it. Lets fix that. Lets give this guy gig really . And these kids, and these guys, him, ah. Oh hello. That lady, these houses yes, yes and yes. And dont forget about them. Uh huh, sure. Still yes xfinity delivers gig speed to more homes than anyone. Now you can get it, too. Welcome to the party. And we want to show you some pictures that happened just moments ago. This is President Trump arriving in ohio, where hes going to be talking about infrastructure. He wants a massive Infrastructure Project to be passed through congress. Its controversial. Hes going to make his pitch today. These will be the president s first public remarks in nearly six days and since we heard from Stormy Daniels for the first time publicly about her alleged affair with the president. We will continue to track the president s developments in ohio. But meantime, right now, we want to take a very left turn and go to Sacramento California where friends, family and Community Members are gathering for the funeral of Stephon Clark, the unarmed black man who was shot and killed last week by policeness grandmothers backyard. The death of the 22yearold, also a father of two, has sparked near daily protests throughout the city. It also comes just days after authorities in louisiana declined to charge two Police Officers in the fatal shootings of another black man, alton sterling. For more, the reverend al sharpton joins me from the church where hes set to deliver the youll i have for Stephon Clark. Thank you for joining me. I appreciate it. This is not the first time youve had to deliver one of these eulogies. I know you are there with the community. Still grief stricken. Still trying to heal from this. What is your message going to be today . Well, one of the things i think we need to make clear is that this is a funeral that should not have happened. This is an unarmed young man. Going in his grandmothers house. Five feet from where she sleeps. And he was shot 20 times. Justice must be served. This is not the first incident in sacramento. Unlike what the white house said yesterday, this is not a local issue. Its a national issue. It needs to be addressed nationally as people mourn here today. So i think that what we are going to say is the life of this young man is not expendable. The community has come together, all religions, all races, to say we cannot continue to have unarmed people shot and killed by those that we entrust to protect and serve. And i think that the protests that have been daily have been nonviolent, but very pointed. Because they want the world to know his name, Stephon Clarks name, ought to resonate to represent what we pursue and that is justice in the criminal justice system. Want to follow up on you, on the point that you make, the message we heard coming out of the white house yesterday. I was there in the Briefing Room when press secretary Sarah Sanders said it was, in fact, a local issue. I pressed her about that. I want to show her your response and get the reaction on the other side. On the rulings that have taken place in the last few days, those are things that have to be done at a local level and theyre not federal decisions that the point in time. There are a lot of africanamerican moms all across the country feel as though their sons are dying. Doesnt the president feel like he needs to do something about that . I think we should do every single thing we can every single day to protect the people of this country. And thats why this president has focused on safety and security as a big part of the priorities of this administration, both through securing our borders and stopping the flow of drugs, stopping the flow of gangs, stopping the number of school shootings. Reverend al, whats your reaction to hearing that . Its doubletalk. This had nothing to do with the borders. This had nothing to do with anything other than a young man going into his grandmothers house. Now, they had an overview camera that was telling the police where they thought the person they were looking for was going. We do not know that if it was stephon or not. But if you knew where he was going, then why do you pursue him . Then act as though you think he has a gun and immediately begin shooting at him as the video shows . So i think that its been the tradition of those that want to evade the issues and act like its just local. It is not a local issue. It is all over the country. Look what louisiana just ruled about baton rouge. Look what weve seen all over the country. This is a national issue. The president needs to address it. The Congress Needs to address it. We here in sacramento to make sure we support those on the ground that are seeking to address it. And this family that should not be burying their son, their grandson, their brother, and the father of two children. This is something that really speaks to us of the need to deal with this issue and deal with it nationally. Reverend, before i let you go, former president obama spoke about the tensions between communities of color. Police departments in very personal terms. He created a task force. Yet a lot of people still dont think all of that went far enough. Why is this something that were still grappling with . Did the Previous Administration do enough . I think the Previous Administration started in that direction with the body cameras from that commission. Many of us, at least civil Rights Groups were involved with that. This president has not said anything. The disturbing thing is at the scene, these policemen are recorded saying hit the mute button, cut off the sound. And they hit the mute button like President Trump has been mute on these issues. We need to take the mute button off, find out whats going on, and why is it always unarmed black men . President trump needs to address this issue as president obama addressed it, and that is why people are protesting and we will continue to protest until we get justice. Were not antipolice. Were antipolice brutality. When you have a young man about to be buried. 22 years old. And no one can say why. When a cell phone is mistaken. When you could have called for backup. Theres no reason that were having this funeral today. And were going to fight with this family to get those reasons answered. All right, reverend al sharpton, thank you so much for joining us today. I know you have a lot on your plate including delivering this very important eulogy, so thank you for that. Thank you, kristen. A little bit of breaking news now. In the last few minutes, Incoming National security adviser john bolton arrived at the pentagon to meet with defense secretary jim mattis. Theyre meeting right now. We have one to two fires a day and when you respond together and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. And for us the expert in gas and electric is pg e. We run about 2,500 2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg e is responding to that call as well. And so when we show up to a fire and pg e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. I rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. Utilizing pg es talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation we are going to be much more skilled and prepared to mitigate that emergency for all concerned. The things we do every single day that puts ourselves in harms way, and to have a partner that is so skilled at what they do is indispensable, and i couldnt ask for a better partner. And theres breaking news out of russia to tell you about at this hour. Nbc news has confirmed the russian government will expel u. S. Diplomats in that country and force the closure of the u. S. Consulate in st. Petersburg and here to discuss this breaking news with me, i have carol lee, as well as aaron blake to break all of this down. Carol, sitting here on set with me, let me go to you. This is obviously not a surprise. We had been reporting on for quite some time there may be a titfortat that we saw from russia. Because of course the u. S. Just expelled Russian Diplomats and just slapped a new round of sanctions on russia for meddling in the u. S. Election. What do you make of this . The one thing that strikes me is this is not more than what the u. S. And other countries did. If its accurate, that its just monofor mono, exactly the same number of diplomats expelled, one consulate closed and in line with what the u. S. And other countries did, then it doesnt go above and beyond. Its not a response that escalates in that sense. But it was its expected this is weve seen this before. And its just something that it will i wonder how this is going to be received because it isnt it doesnt intensify things but it is an actual response and it will have an impact. It will have an impact. Potentially heighten tensions which are already quite high. I want to go to london and nbcs Lucy Cavanaugh who is here with new details. As you and the guest were saying, this is not a surprise. Its a titfortat response from russia. One we anticipated. We knew russia would respond somehow in kind. This is in retaliation for what the United States did a few days ago, shutting down the russian consulate in seattle. Washington expelling 60 washington diplomats that work in d. C. , at the Russian Embassy there and at the united nations. Its all part of the fallout of the poisoning of the double spy and his daughter in the uk. We had new developments. Sk skripals daughter is recovering. Sergey lavrov, the Russian Foreign minister, said the u. S. Ambassador, jon huntsman, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry earlier today where he was effectively given this notice that russia is responding quid pro quo. We saw the official twitter account for russias u. S. Embassy ask online which u. S. Ko consulate should be closed. This is not a surprise. It certainly does escalate those tensions. Its been respeexpected there we a titfortat response. Aaron, again, as weve been discussing, this is not a surprise. It is certainly something that could heighten tensions between the United States and russia. What do you make of this move . Right. I think a big question here of course over the last several days was how much would the white house and specifically President Trump up the rhetoric in response to this. I think the fact that its pretty much on par with what the United States did, its very much what russia has done in response to other countries, in europe, expelling the same number of diplomats that they have. That creates i think less of an onus for the president to maybe up his rhetoric. We continue to see a situation in which the white house makes these actions, puts out strong statements, joins with allies in denouncing russia. We still havent seen the president say anything about this. I dont think this is going to add to the pressure. Let me follow up. A lot of people scratching their heads about that very point you raise. President trump hasnt tweeted at Vladimir Putin. He hasnt criticized him. Yet you see these strong actions behind the scenes frommed officials. So why the disconnect . Right. The most recent word we have, in fact, from the president on this, was that conversation he had with Vladimir Putin last week, which was congratulating him on his reelection win. Not talking about the poisoning of Sergei Skripal as his aides wanted him to. Very much in line with how the white house has been handling this entire russia situation throughout the administration. There have been very strong statements coming from people beneath trump, from the state department. But its not been from him. Hes always emphasized harmony. Whether its the strategy, i think thats the big question. Certainly we dont know what the president feels about these thing because he hasnt told us. Carol, let me bring you back into this discussion. Were following this breaking news as were also tracking this very remarkable meeting thats happening right now at the pentagon. The Incoming National security adviser john bolton is meeting for the very first time with defense secretary jim mattis. The two clash on a range of issues. But not necessarily on russia, right . Theyre a little bit more in line with each other on russia and, you know, bolton is more at odds with the president , frankly, on russia issues. So that will be an interesting thing to see play out. You know, they obviously are putting forward a very collegiate front in front of the cameras. Theyll probably have a more candid conversation privately about these different issues. Whether its north korea or iran. That they do disagree on. You know, secretary mattis has boltons coming in and hes the National Security adviser. He is steps from the oval office. He will be very close to the president. Close proximity. However, mattis has the experience of working under trump. And that could be of value to bolton in their conversation. Aaron, one of the things that strikes me about these two men who are now going to work in very close concert together with the president on these critical Foreign Policy issues, which carol raises, they have differences on north korea, iran, to name a few. Is that what youre saying is the press has sort of gotten rid of or has limited the number of people who disagree with him now. Because you have john bolton who, yes, aligns with mattis when it comes to russia, but who really agrees with President Trump on a range of other issues. Yes, i thought it was really interesting what general mattis said a couple of days ago in his only comments to date on this situation. It was after the New York Times had reported that mattis was unhappy with the selection of john bolton as National Security adviser. Mattis said, you know, theyll get along, theyll Work Together. He also said at one point the last time i checked, john bolton is an american. Well, thats a pretty low bar for having to work with somebody. I dont think its a ringing endorsement necessarily of john boltons world view. Theyre going to have to Work Together. Theyre going to get started today, apparently. All right, aaron blake from the washington post, nbcs cara lee and lucy casanauf, thank you. President trump just arriving in ohio where hes expected to tout his infrastructure proposal. M. , i was there on west fourth street. It was kind of horrifying. Even for this individual i. T. Consultant, dylan, who set this all off. This is his business. Hes an i. T. Guy. Even for him what he saw in there, he found that shocking. And yet there are some differences between these big companies. For example, apples ceo tim cook did an exclusive interview with msnbc and in that interview, he made the point theres a big difference between apple and facebook. Listen to what he had to say. The truth is, we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer. If our customer was our product. We could make a ton of money. Weve elected not to do that. So theyve elected not to do that. What about google . How does this fit into this broader conversation were having . Sure. Well are well, i mean, just because apple isnt reselling data about you, well, that doesnt mean theyre not collecting it. If were going to be using the internet as its currently designed if youre a customer of any of these massive tech companies, youre being tracked, youre being surveilled. Your data is going into the big machine. Thats how its set up. So theres sort of a growing Awareness Among consumers that the default settings are whats at stake here. We can do what we can. I can change my personal privacy settings. I can get my family to. I encourage everyone to do that. But the real battle is won on what are these companies opting in the great masses into by default, and thats what people are getting so uncomfortable with. I think you do raise a good point though. Weve been discussing this throughout the day. To what extent do people need to take their own security online into their own hands and make sure that they are engaging with all of the privacy settings that are available, and if theyre not, reaching out to the company and saying ha ing hey, i need hh this, i need to make my account better protected . Sure. Theres tools all of us should use, but the onus should not necessarily be totally on the consumer. This is the machine, like i said, is set up, how the funnel is set up to catch us and monetize us and leverage our data. Thats where it starts to be a question about not just a relationship between the company and customer but a regulars going to start taking attention, start taking steps to put in some new Consumer Protections after all this privacy fallout. I want to ask you about this remarkable back and forth that weve seen between the president and amazon. Obviously another large online company. Let me read you his latest tweet. Let me get your reaction. He tweeted this morning, i have stated my concerns with amazon long before the election. Unlike others, they pay little or no taxes to state and local governments. Use our postal system as their delivery boy, causing tremendous loss to the u. S. , and are putting many thousands of retailers out of business. Now, ben, his criticism of amazon actually it is believed may have contributed to that drop in the companys stocks that we all saw yesterday. What is at stake here with these growing tensions apparently between the government and the tech business giants . Well, its clear theres something going on. I mean, trump know, how to jump on a winning trend. Thats part of whats going on here. But there is a bigger question here about the power that these companies have amassed. The sort of free and open and kind of creative internet has in recent years come to be more and more increasingly consolidated. What people think of as the internet is their facebook startup page. Thats, that doesnt leave as much room, as much oxygen for, you know, creative upstarts. So i think there is definitely a question here. And the interesting thing about amazon is there could be questions about antitrust evenan though theyve lowered Consumer Prices n. Recent history what is month on the part of lisk, mainly does that harm Consumer Prices. What are the other issues, other ways that consumers can be harmed, and even social issues are at play. We can look back to history, 1911, standard oil. That company was broken up and they had actually reduced the price of oil. So there is a precedent here that amazon should read the history books that you could probably buy for pennies on amazon. Com. It certainly is fascinating to watch this all play out. Nbcs ben popken, thank you so much and thanks for your great reporting. We want to head back out to ohio. Some pictures of President Trump we hope will be taking the podium in just a few minutes from now. Hes making his first public appearance this week. The trip was to promote infrastructure. I want to bring in lonnie chen, current director of policy studies at stanford. Just to remind our viewers what the breaking news is, the attorney for Stormy Daniels had filed a motion to deposit the president , maecichael avenatti. It may be just a temporary situation. But whats your take. By and large this is a setback for them, but the question is, as this story goes on, kristen, as this tons remain in the news, is this lengthy amount of time in the news a good thing or bad thing for the president . It has not burned itself out. So the question Going Forward is are they going to take a more aggressive line now that they see some legal relief potentially and try to get away from the story a little. That remains to be seen. Ive been stalking to advisers at the white house ask they say privately this is a candidate who survived that access hollywood tape. This is someone who got more support among women than they were, frankly, anticipating, and they also make the point that, hey, the president s not for reelection for quite some time. They dont think this is going to impact the president. What is your sense based on what you know of how politics works and, frankly, of this moment, which is very different . It is different and yet its the same in a lot of ways. I think their point of view bears makes a lot of sense. The reality is this is a different kind of president a different kind of candidate to have come through the campaign. To a certain degree i think the white houses theory here, which bears credence, is that a lot of this is already baked into the cake with the american people. They sort of realize Donald Trumps past activities, this is something they factored into when they made the decision, those who voted for him. As we get towards november with the Midterm Elections, because even though hes not technically on the ballot, he sort of is. There are republicans that are up for reelection, certainly controlled the house and the senate. And to the extent this story impacts voters impressions and opinions, we will see when we get to november how significantly of an issue this is. I want to bring in Kelly Odonnell back in. Shes at that event in ohio. Kelly, the president poised to talk in, frankly, a place where he has had a lot of support. They are going to be eager to hear from this president. Hes going into friendly territory, right . Very safe territory. And this is a place where there are members of local a team union, this is a Training Facility where they get skills that are needed in the workplace. That is the kind of infrastructure workplace were talking about here. The president has his ideas about trying to bring together federal state and local and private partnerships for various business projects that would build because she does streets and bridges. Theres a lot of pushback from democrats about how this would be laid out. Its something the white house says would have to come in pieces. In terms of the audience, this is very much a friendly environment based on what we can tell. The president did win ohio, but ohio has its various pockets where the parties play out differently. This is an area where the kind of working class man, the laborer, the skilled journeymen and apprentice and master of various crafts, thats whos involved in this audience here. This is not open to the general public. This is an invitationonly event. That gives the president cushion in terms of access to those who might want to ask him confess, including us. And the interaction with the audience. We know the president will lay out the points of the infrastructure plan. This is something hes been talking about since candidate days, and it would have been perhaps even more effective some would argue to push this through earlier in his presidency. He opted to go through other kinds of big issues. This is where you can sometimes get democratic support, but its always an issue of the details, how it gets paid for, how it goes forward. Were in a Midterm Election year, making it that much harder for any of this to happen. But the president will be speaking here. One of his only appearances publicly in a span of about a week. Let me have you pick up very quickly on that point that kelly makes. We are eager to hear from the president. These will be his first public remarks in nearly a week and since Stormy Daniels held that interview over the weekend. What do you make of his strategy to have no Public Events this week . I think a lot of it is driven by the notion that, first of all, maybe not trying to add fuel to the fire, and second, maybe not wanting to put himself in legal jeopardy to the extent this is an ongoing legal matter. Theyve clearly made the decision that going dark is superior to making comments and we cant necessarily disagree with that. Great conversation. All right, thank you so much. We will continue, of course, to keep an eye on the crowd gathered in richfield, ohio, will President Trump is set to take the president barack obama to praise his infrastructure proposal. We will bring you that live when it happens. Thank you so much. Thank you so were a go . Yes we got a yes what does that mean for purchasing . Purchase. Lets do this. Got it. Book the flights hai si si ya ya ya what does that mean for us . We can get stuff. Whats it mean for shipping . Ship the goods. Youre a go you got the green light. That means go oh, yeah. American express open. Of msnbc live. My colleague katy tur takes over right now. Hey, there, kate. Is it already 2 00 . It is already 2 00, and its going to be a big hour because its the president s first Public Comments all week. So we will be watching closely. Were going to dip into that when he begins. We have breaking news. Its 11 00 a. M. Out west and 9 00 p. M. In moscow where were following breaking news. The russian government now says it will expel 60 u. S. Diplomats and close the u. S.
