Comments on the recent protests and violence. Donald trump looks at this violence and he sees a political lifeline, you know me. You know my heart. You know my story. My familys story. Ask yourself do i look like a radical socialist with a soft spot for rioters . Really. The white house says President Trump will hold a briefing in a few hours. Tomorrow, hell head to kenosha, wisconsin, despite the mayor and governor saying now its a bad time. Press secretary defended the trip. The president wants to visit in kenosha and minneapolis, there was violence on the streets and literally within 24 hours you saw a turnaround when federal officials came in. He didnt show up in portland, where there were also protests that he talked about a lot, is it not also bautz wisconsin is such an important political state . The president is showing up to see hurting americans. Former National Security adviser Michael Flynn wants his criminal case thrown out immediately. Today a federal Court Appeals denied his request. So much to talk about this hour. Were glad youre with us. Joe bidens speech took direct aim at donald trump over fear and safety. He refocused on the more than 184,000 americans who have died from covid19. He keeps telling us, he was president , youd feel safe, well, hes president , whether he knows it or not. It is happening. Donald trump wants to ask the question, who will keep you safer as president . Lets answer that question. Do you really safer under donald trump . Mr. Trump, want to talk about fear . You know what people are afraid of america theyre afraid theyre going to get covid, theyre afraid theyre going to get sick and die, in no small part because of you. Joining us now is White House Correspondent for pbs newshour, yamiche alcindor. Today, joe biden condemned violence of all kinds. How much pressure do you feel hes feeling on this issue especially because President Trump keeps bringing it up . Well, thank you for having me, joshua the speech that we saw today was the most forceful counterargument weve seen not just from joe biden but democrats on this issue of law and order and rhetoric that President Trump and his republican allies have been putting out there. Basically out there for weeks, if democrats are in charge, continued lawlessness and chaos. The rioting and looting. They say it will become the norm. Joe biden has so far left those accusations largely untouched. These protests and the images of violence of rioting and looting could hurt joe biden in november and help President Trump. For him to be physically out in the campaign trail in the covid era, theyre taking this issue seriously and they want to get that narrative. We heard joe biden address a number of falsehoods republicans make about him, that hes radical socialist. Yamiche, you asked the press secretary about how the president feels about this increase in violence. Here is that exchange. Does this president is he rooting for more violence for the political benefit . Thats what Kellyanne Conway is absolutelying, democrats say that the president thinks violence works in his political favor . Absolutely not. Hes not rooting for more violence in the slightest and in fact, you know, i would not under his administration, we saw Violent Crime nationwide decrease in both 2017 and 2018 after rising during each of the two previous years. Yamiche, what did you make of that answer . I made of that answer that the white house is trying to make sure theyre not seeing as rooting for violence but in fact, it was pretty clear that the white house counselor Kellyanne Conway believes chaos and anarchy works in their favor. She said as much last week. Makes the distinguish between President Trump and Vice President biden clear. Kayleigh mcenany theres point of view is pretty clear here, their point of view, they feel like what were seeing with American Cities on fire in some places, even though were seeing largely peaceful protests, the focus on that will help them get reelected. When joe biden condemn and give the pushback speech, hes also reacting to what the polls are saying, if you look at a poll by Marquette University law school, in wisconsin, it shows that support for black lives matter has gone down from june to august and thats among independents, democrats and republicans. So what people are seeing is that people are really worried about the fact that they feel like there might be lawlessness and looting and violence in their cities. Even if youre similympathetics there are Everyday Americans especially in a key battleground state like wisconsin that are worried about this. Of course, democrats say that Vice President biden has been forceful in condemning violence before. You could tell today he had to be out there to push back. He understands that the president s arguments are starting to work on at least a couple of americans. The Republican Party as yamiche has depicting cities with democrat mayors including new york with being overrun with crimes. Bigcity crime was down more than 5 in the first half of this year, Violent Crimes are down 2 , murders are up sharply, but even that rise is lower than the murder rate was back in 2012, its also lower than at any point during Rudy Giulianis administration. Those are the facts. Whats stronger right now, the facts or the fear . I struggle with this, joshua, im sure you both, too, as reporters and journalists in this moment, i think a lot about the facts dont always get through to voters that these feelings do, brought up by candidates on either side. Were seeing americans are sort of souring on the black lives Matter Movement. Id imagine thats because of the images of violent and looting, of course arent official parts of the black lives Matter Movement. These people are joining these protests that are happening by the black lives Matter Movement and turning that into that. The facts arent getting to people as they need to, especially about Violent Crime and thats the thing, President Trump is someone who wants to rely on fear. Weve seen him do this in 2016 election and the Migrant Caravan in the 2018 midterm elections, weve seen him do this with law and order. The fearful ad that his Reelection Campaign, where he imagines that the police have been defunded and they totally lie about what that looks like. Lot of folks are in the Reelection Campaign are relying on voters to vote based on their feelings. Wall street journal editorial that blames kate brown and ted wheeler for the death of a man during this weeks protests, the Editorial Board said President Trump would do better by firing his base up by calm iincalming. What do you make of that advice . Well, that advice is something that maybe President Trump will hear, im not quite sure hell stop attacking democrats, hes already really moved forward with this agenda to blame everything on democratic leerz. The white house chief of staff mark meadows divorce the president from democratic cities. Really splitting america into two political ideologies and i think this is going to be a fear election. What youre pointing out, josh, all the same thing this is an election thats going to be about how you feel both in the midst of a racial reckoning or in a pandemic. Are you fearful that this pandemic may kill you or a Family Member because the president has struggled to contain the pandemic. Or youre a republican, youre scared about the fact that your city, that your city is somehow going to be engulfed in flames . Looking at the president to say, prepandemic that will come back miraculously. This is all about fear, race, all about health care. The president when he goes to wisconsin is not going to be seeking really to calm things down in the traditional sense, hes not an emphatic chief, hell rile up his base. Thiss what we imagine and we can expect tomorrow. Talking about people who are coming in arms. The white house refuses to condemn people coming on to the streets with guns. They had that experience over and over again and they have yet to do that. Thank you for starting us off. A joe biden says hell visit battleground states after labor day, including minnesota. Tomorrow President Trump will head to kenosha over the objections of local officials. Joining us now is Minnesota Attorney general keith ellison. Welcome to the program. Thank you. Glad to be here. If President Trump wanted to visit minnesota, what would you advise . I would advise him to calm things and not to inflame them, making comments that are going to draw people with guns to protests is not helping, actually makes everything worse, more volatile and id encourage him to stay away. You have filed motions asking for longer potential sentences for the officers involved in the death of george floyd, why . Im not at liberty to discuss the case. It requires that i dont make any comments that might impact the jury pool. I will say that if you read our complaint the facts in it indicate that this is the appropriate action, but forgive me, thats pretty much ill be able to say. People have lost their li livelihoods because of protess,s your investigation is under way, your prosecution is under way, but these protests havent stopped. Is it possible that the public is still just not convinced that justice will be done and thats skepticism, that cynicism is fueling this unrest . I think that it is. I think the public wants to see the system, the justice system, operate justly in a Sustainable Way and i think, until they have that confidence, people are going to feel that using their First Amendment rights as the way to get the justice people are craving. Look, you know, george floyd is one tragic case, but look at all of the other ones that weve seen over the course of years, even rodney king or walter scott, or eric gardner, or sandra bland, people are responding to what has built over decades. I think the thing to do is to say no one is above. Law, no one is below the law and were going to have equal justice in america. They can trust the system to preserve justice and to promote justice. Thats what i think we got to do, sustainbly be just and fair. Does your team feel any pressure in terms of this prosecuti prosecution . If the death of george floyd has touched this off, if there are no charges or acquittal in this case, that could strike another match on a tinderbox . Well, i guess my main point is that its not just this case that touched all this off. This problem of Police Community conflict look, john lewis talked about it on the march on washington in 1963, its what started the urban uprisings in the mid1960s. My father whos 91 will tell you how they had riots in 1943 because of this issue, exactly not this issue that started this, that sparked it, but so did a lot of underlying conditions like poverty, housing, injustice in various aspects on of life. Have watched a black man die at the hands of officers in real time. 8 minutes and 42 seconds means something to every white person in america. I do concede that point. Youre right. Just the visual of it all is somewhat unique, you dont see it laid out starkly. There are underlying factors to erupt in a way that it did. For sure. I guess my point is, were not going to absorb a lot of pressure because we have a job to do and were going to do justice, were going to put forth and present a case that we believe we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt. Thats what well do and well trust the jury to have the right outcome. Thats what im asking my team to do. But on the best case they can in a fair way, were ministers of justice. Were here to prove charges that we believe exist beyond a reasonable doubt. I believe that well do that. Minnesota attorney general keith ellison. Thank you. Thank you. The Investigation Continues in portland after a man is shot dead. It happened after Police Reform protesters and a protrump caravan got into a fight. The victim was part of a farright group called Patriot Prayer. Well hear from that groups founder ahead. Fda head said he may fasttrack a vaccine. How safe will that be. Lets get you caught up on the latest facts on the coronavirus pandemic. Cycling fans are hoping that Tour De France survives covid19. Theyll expel a racing team if any of two of its members test positive for covid within a week. No racer will qualify to cross the finish line. The Tour De France has only been cancelled for two reasons, world war i and world war ii. This weekend, opponents of the order protested at the massachusetts statehouse. In pennsylvania, a temporary ban on evictions and foreclosures expires today. This morning, pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf hintd that he would extend the moratoriumorat. Clinical trials are under way around the world for a coronavirus vaccine. The head of the fda is under some scrutiny today after saying he might authorize a vaccine before the Clinical Trials in the u. S. Are done. Last week at the rnc, President Trump and Vice President pence both said well have a vaccine this year. The fda commissioner told the Financial Times that he would not rush a vaccine to appease the president. Still his comments are raising some concerns about political pressure. Nbc senior medical correspondent dr. John torres joins us now. Tell us about Clinical Trials, there are three stages to Clinical Trials. What happens in stage three . Great to see you, joshua. Stage three is the final stage of the human trials. Typically heres what happen, they start off in animal trials, make sure its safe and effective in animals and then they transcig to humans and have three different phases. They make it sure its safe. Phase two, around 300 or 400 people and then they go to phase three, phase three for this vaccine is being around 30,000 people per vaccine manufacturer. 30,000 people, give them the vaccine or the placebo. Its whole spectrum of society. 18 to 65, in some cases 80. They make sure they have a bunch of ethnic groups in there and people with different medical conditions. They want to mimic society. Dr. Hahn is saying, theyre thinking about eu, prior to tend of phase three. So phase one is it safe . So phase two, does it work . Phase three, is it worth it . Is that generally it . Thats generally it. Thats what theyre using with emergency use authorization. Typically fda approves things that takes years, many trials going through phase three, getting the data, crunching the numbers, making sure its safe, approving it. In the midst of a pandemic that takes too long. Lets use this emergency use authorization. Does the benefit outweigh the risk . In that case, maybe for certain groups we can use this eua, healthcare workers, essential workers, maybe those with preexisting medical conditions. Independent groups are saying, we got to make sure theres no political pressure here. Take it out of politics and put it in science, data and medicine. With regard to that data according to palm beach post, the government is thinking about approving the oxford vaccine. Im sure that astrazeneca wants a vaccine they want around the world. One thing about having them here in the u. S. , having it done through the uk and their Research Data would be unprecedented at least for this type of vaccine the reason is because here in the u. S. They can make sure the standards are met, they can keep an eye on the trials and get the data from that and push it forward for the approval process. The uk has already done these type of things. We know the uk system. Lets use that data. The university of wisconsin is going to start trials tomorrow for that same vaccine, the oxfo. It would be unprecedented to use another nations data but not necessarily bad. One thing to talk about the race for the vaccine and another thing to talk about the finish line. The death of Actor Chadwick Boseman from colon cancer stunned the world. It didnt stun medical experts. Plus, democrats say they might subpoena direct of National IntelligenceJohn Ratcliffe after he said Election Security briefings would end. I dont want any trade minimums. Between black lives matter protesters and protrump counterprotesters. A picture of the victim shows him wearing a hat with the logo of Patriot Prayer. Its a portland area group thats clashed with protesters before. The Southern Poverty Law Center describes Patriot Prayer as a farright group. What else are we learning about this shooting and about the group . Reporter well, joshua, i was speaking to joe gibson, whos the founder of Patriot Prayer, and a close friend of the victim who goes by the name jay. Were not going to be identifying the victim because its not clear that his family has been notified at this point. But, gibson paints a picture of what happened that day, he said that he and jay were part of that protrump convoy which drove through the streets of portland, clashing with counterprotesters, firing off paintballs and mace, he says n selfdefense when counterprotesters were pushing against their vehicles. Different eyewitnesses give a different account. He said that convoy had left the city, that the protest was over. That jay was here in portland because he lives in portland, it was around 8 00 p. M. When he was walking done the street here in downtown, when he says a man approached them and fired two shots the first shot hit his friend chandlers mace can niis and then shot jay in the chest, jay died at the scene. Take a listen to what he told me. Tell me about jay. Jays one of the nicest guys youll ever meet. It doesnt matter if youre far left, conservative, no one will want to hurt this guy. You were good friends . Good friends. Do you have any regrets . Looking back on saturday. I have regrets that jay was shot. I dont know whether we went to the the way media is portraying it had something to do with the trump cruise, it didnt. Jay was Walking Around in his own town and he got attacked. I dont know what else we could have done differently. Reporter i asked him why he was part of the convoy, what sort of message they were trying to send that day . He told me that they were simply along for the ride. Joshua. Thanks, erinn. You may recall that President Trump once asked for total loyalty from the former fbi director james comey, a new book suggest that wasnt the last time he made such a demand. President trump then offered the job to john kelly. Kelly refused saying that his loyalty is to the constitution. Nbc National Security and intelligence correspondent joins us with more. Ken, what more do we know about this conversation between President Trump and jn kelly . Very little, joshua. Nbc news is endeavoring to learn more. We havent confirmed this interesting reporting of Michael Schmidt of the new york times. Its very consistent about how President Trump has operated. After all, one of the early revelations from james comey was that President Trump asked for his loyalty and when comey essentially made it clear he wasnt going to provide that, comey was out of a job, now this reporting suggests that the next person President Trump wanted to appoint as fbi director he was asking for total loyalty. President trump asked various members of his cabinet and intelligence officials to state publicly they had seen no evidence of collusion. A theme where donald trump sees the government and the cabinet officials of not working for the American Public but working for him and him alone. Let me ask you about the director of National Intelligence, John Ratcliffe, hes going change how congress is briefed on intelligence related to Election Security, away from inperson briefings apparently to avoid leaks. Nancy pelosi and adam schiff are condemning this change. What do we know about any leaks and the impact of this change . Does it make a practical difference whether congress is briefed in person or not . Yes, it makes a huge difference, joshua, because lawmakers cant question a piece of paper about the nuance or the basis of some particular intelligence finding and what ratcliffe is doing here he wont provide intelligence officials to brief at least the House Intelligence Committee now on one of the most important Election Security interference. Marco rubio the chairman of that committee has said that he does expect that the dni will still brief. In terms of leaks, leaks have been happening as long as congress has been briefed on Election Security. I think the real issue here is that ratcliffe wants to get control of the message and get the control of the information, joshua. Thank you, ken. Thats nbcs ken dilanian. The family of Actor Chadwick Boseman received a rare honor from his home state of south carolina. A flag that flew at halfstaff outside the capitol. South carolinas Governor Henry Mcmaster ordered the flag lower. Boseman died on friday at age 43 from colon cancer. The deep disparity in who colon cancer tends to kill. Black americans are 20 more likely to get Colorectal Cancer and were also 40 more likely to die from it. Doctor, welcome to the program. Thank you for having me. The cynic in me says, well, of course were more likely to die of this. We suffer disparities in environmental justice, healthcare access, criminal justice, food insecurity, were more likely to live in food desert, how could we not be at more risk of Colorectal Cancer, is it that simple . Or more to it . I think theres more to it. They likely contribute to the disparities that were seeing. Certainly access to health care is different in populations among black communities compared to White Communities and theres difference in risk factors to systemic differences you have mention. On top of that, screening rates are much lower in black communities than in White Communities. So, clearly more Research Needs to be done. We need to understand what the root causes of these disparities to effectively narrow the gap and certainly Public Health measures must be taken to improve awareness in these communities. Lets show a list of the most common symptoms. A change in bowel habits. Ongoing stomach pain. Rectal bleeding. Weakness or fatigue. Unintended weight loss. So all of these symptoms are very nonspecific as you mentioned and can be do to other conditions other than Colorectal Cancer and this is part of the problem thats led to significant delays of diagnosis especially among young people who are otherwise young and healthy because cancer is simply not on a radar as a possibility. Nor it is on the radar of the clinician whos seeing them. I apologize for interrupting you. Each year, more young people are being diagnosed with colon cancer, the median age dropped so much that the American Cancer Society changed the guidelines in 2018 and recommends nen with average risk start screening at 45. Ive been screened. I got a colonoscopy when i was 38. Chadwick boseman died at 43. What is your sense of how age and race dovetail in terms of risk. Blacks are more likely to be diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer at much younger ages and were seeing an uptick of colon cancer happening in people under the age of 50. All around the country, actually all around the world. So the key here is Early Detection and prevention. We really need to do more research to understand why this is happening in young people so we can eye didnt my those at highest risk and target them for earlier screening. If you notice symptoms, call your doctor or go to cancer. Org. Doctor, thank you very much. Thank you. Coronavirus is leaving some people at risk of another contagion, misinformation. Protests over coronavirus restrictions in this country but nothing like this. In berlin, demonstrators tried to force their way into the parliament building, some in the crowd were shouting support for qanon the online Conspiracy Theory that espouses that President Trump is our salvior. Matt bradley is live in berlin. Matt, what happened . Reporter joshua, we were Walking Around, two days ago, all around this area, right in front of the iconic brandenberg gate here. Ive got told you, the vast majority of people in these crowds, they were just protesting against those coronavirus restrictions, of which, here in germany, they didnt really have that harsh of a restriction regime. And the death toll and the number of cases was actually really quite low compared to its neighbors, but they did go after the parliament building. That was very threatening. The president of germany just said today that this was an attack on the heart of german democracy. This boisterous protest is trying to convince the world the coronavirus pandemic is exaggerated or even a sham. You wont see any masks or gloves here, but you can catch a glimpse of a very american phenomenon. This march in berlin is mostly against coronavirus restrictions, but there are a lot of qanon supporters here, thanks to the coronavirus, the qanon Conspiracy Theory is spreading around the world like a pandemic. Most european qanon believers are new to this Conspiracy Theory. Their skepticism of the coronavirus acted as a kind of gateaway to qanon, inviting believers down a bizarre rabbit hole of delusion. Coronavirus got you an entree into qanon, is that correct . Reporter so what is qanon . It depends on who you ask, but it has one central strand. That a global cabal of elites controls the world and that theyre trafficking in children. They want to get our children, like the sick pedophiles all around the world. Reporter it all goes back to an internet internet poster known as q who said that he had access to secret donald trump. His post states that donald trump is a savior who will soon put an end to this arresting people in the storm or the great awakeni awakening. Theres no evidence of any of this, but for some, its a useful theory. The thrust of the theory is that you are secretly saving the world from this satanic cult of pedophiles and cannibals. Does that sound like something you are behind or well, i havent heard that, but, is that supposed to be a bad thing or a good thing . I mean, you know. Reporter qanon believers have risen to positions in americas Republican Party and President Trump welcomes their support. And george soros and the democrats are trying to take me down. She comes from a great state and she had a tremendous victory. So absolutely, i did congratulate her. Reporter thanks to the pandemic, this theory has become a distinctly american export, despite crackdowns by social media companies, researchers have seen qanon believers from dozens of Different Countries uniting online. Lydia morris tracks qanons Online Activity for first draft news. Qanon is much more flexible as a Conspiracy Theory than it might have been a couple of years ago when it was more u. S. Centric. Its really just very adaptable and malleable. Reporter a dutch housewife says shes genuinely worried for her 8yearold son juneau. His future, yeah, because i dont want to live in fear of hugging people or of seeing other people as potential sick and making others sick. Reporter like many european believers, qanon is a recent believer. Some people will call you crazy whatever, conspiracy, crazy. I dont care anymore. Because for me, i know a lot of things that are happening are very bad and they have to come out. Reporter while qanon supporters in the states have committed violence, these protests have been mostly peaceful. But not welcoming to journalists who many believers count among the socalled elites that they oppose. They shouted insults at us, some even tried to block our shot. Nobody wants to hear this. Theyre chanting, which means fake news. Reporter a hostile hallucination thats on the march around the world. Reporter yeah, joshua, so those insults, that hostility, we were getting that for the several hours that we were Walking Around at this protest on saturday. It just never stops. And you know, it wasnt just because we were carrying camera equipment, it was also because we were wearing these. We were the only ones in the crowds that were wearing masks. Thats nbcs matt bradley reporting live from berlin. Voting in the general election officially begins this friday in north carolina. It will be the first state to send out ballots. North carolina is already breaking records in this regard. As of yesterday, more than 535,000 people have requested ballots. Thats up by a half million ballots from this point in 2016. Now, that demand seems to variy across party lines. Data from the states board of election shows that just over half of absentee ballot requests right now are coming from registered democrats. 16 have come from republicans. Compare that to 2016, democrats requested 31 of the ballots, republicans requested 40 of them independents were about 30 this time and last year. Bush decided that it just wasnt his job to be the president of new york city because its residents werent his people. Or if bill clinton had decided not to head to Oklahoma City after Timothy Mcveigh blew up a Federal Building there because it wasnt a state in which hed prevailed. Or if president obama said newtown wasnt his part of the state of connecticut and hed stayed away after the shooting at sandy hook elementary school. It hurts to even say those words out loud because it never would have happened. Of course, it didnt happen. All of those men understood that it was their job to lead american, all americans, through her most painful days, and their most fundamental duty was to protect all citizens of this country from threats foreign and domestic. Sometimes its important to remind ourselves how utterly freakish it is that the current american president doesnt see the presidency that way. Case in point, this weekend,
