Some of the toughest for the survival candidates. Perhaps the best test on whether each can appeal to the wide array of american voters. Now, what one votes in iowa and New Hampshire, where you had to be on the ground, may be different. Certainly is different, in the minority driven nevada and South Carolina primaries there. Then you got super tuesday, with its mega money requirement. And thats just around the corner. And here are the candidates and how theyre responding to all of that today. Its a very exciting time for our campaign. People counted us out, you know, when i announced in the blizzard they didnt even think we were going to finish that speech much less get through the summer and the debate. We are clearly surging. Have you thought about the fact that the president is campaigning against you and your son might have been effective . That it might have cost you iowa, New Hampshire . Well has that crossed your mind . It has. I cant focus on that, chuck. I got to focus on the future. What we do is is a vision that as weve demonstrated in New Hampshire and iowa, can bring people together in a commitment as we come to more racially diverse states to speak to the concerns of voters who are here. While donald trump, hes attending the daytona 500 along with some jets possibly a lap around the track even in his limo, known as the beast as many of you know. The nevada caucus and super tuesday votes have the candidates all stretched from coast to coast. Snurt Bernie Sanders is working hard to maintain his surge in popularity, hitting both colorado and nebraska today. And also taking swipes along the way at former mayor Mike Bloomberg. We will not defeat donald trump with a candidate who instead of holding the crooks on wall street accountable blame the end of racist policies such as redlining for the financial crisis. Josh letterman is following the campaign as well for us in carson city nevada. Talk about sanders, bloomberg and potentially how they see each other as threats, and overall as i started this hour by saying, this is a real test of many voters, that first test that you were reporting on in the midwest and New Hampshire, that was really about grassroots campaigning. Reporter yeah. Thats right. And we just had one of these unpredictable moments that only happens on the campaign trail, rich. We came to this restaurant here to get some peoples thoughts, voters ahead of the caucuses about how they feel about those attacks from sanders on Mike Bloomberg. And it ournd out sanders was actually inside having breakfast right here in the squeeze inn. We saw him. We caught up with some of the folks in the restaurant having breakfast to get their thoughts about Mike Bloomberg and the money hes spending to try to get himself elected. Take a listen to what they had to say. I want to see him on the debate stage. I want to see him answer some questions. So if he can get the right answers out there, and keep driving the way he needs to, theres a chance. But until he does that, you cant i cant go there. What about this idea that bloomberg is trying to buy the own election with his own money . Does that bother you . Its a free country. I like a candidate that is running his own campaign with the hope of the communities instead of just coming in with the big bucks. Reporter so you can hear, richard, some people bothered by the fact that he is spending all of this money, his own money that the other candidates dont have. Others saying this is what you do and theres a fair chance for him to be able to compete along side the others. The big question, will he about be in the debate . The other candidates want to press him, want to be on the debate stage with him. But he still needs one more National Poll where he hits 10 or higher in order to make the debate stage. Thank you so much there, in carson city, nevada. Much is at stake for Pete Buttigieg as well as he heads into nevada caucus with the distinction of being the candidate with the most delegates so far. Can he hold on to those in a state with very different demographic or the lead in delegates that he has . Heres what he told Latino Chamber of commerce last night. Went through the first two con tests and emerged in a great position. But i think nevada is a unique state. Its a stake that looking tote future demographically, what the future of america looks like, and i think this is a fantastic opportunity for our message about moving the country forward. Garret headact haake joins u. He went on the offense against Rush Limbaugh this morning. What happened . Reporter this is one of those eliktdibility trap issues. I have never once had a voter tell me they care about Pete Buttigiegs sexual orien tax. But sometimes they worry about others. Rush limbaughs comment wasnt particularly they hope to focus on other issues. The kpab feels good about where theyre at in ncevada. Theyve got the sents of momentum coming off strong performs in iowa and New Hampshire. It is an you will hich fight to introduce himself in a state against a former Vice President whos good decades of experience and Bernie Sanders who has run in this state before. This is one of those situations especially in a caucus environment where that organization is skey or even th small amount of experience, gives sanders a little bit of an edge. All of that said, this line behind me waiting to get into the buttigieg rally is impressive. It is a young, diverse crowd, and thats what youre going to need if youre going to try to have a surprise finish in nevada. Have you had a chance to talk to some of those in line . And what have they said . Reporter theyre fired up. A lot of people have come from around not just las vegas. A woman drove up from arizona, wanted to see buttigieg. He is a candidate who democratic voters the voters he appeals to are ones who have wanted to see a new face, new energy. Kochlk to a rally like this gives people the opportunity. They were placed to see what he was able to do coming out of the early voting states. There is an acknowledgement of the challenges he faces. Its one thing when you are the hot candidate to win in states that come one after the next after the next. When we get to super tuesday here coming up in just a few weeks, hes going to have to compete in 14 states im tainiously. Hes better positioned to do that than say Amy Klobuchar, whos less wellfunded, having to build out her organization on the fly. Still youre going to run into a challenge for buttigieg competing against Michael Bloomberg whos got money and Bernie Sanders who has his wellestablished network of supporters in those places. I think the Buttigieg Campaign and his supporters are well aware that thats where the real challenge lies, they cant just focus on the next hurdle but having to clear essentially 14 hurdles in Different Directions all at the same time. It is daunting as we were saying. Theyve got a lot to do in the next several weeks. Thank you so much Garrett Haake there in nevada. Right now the president , to flip to the other side of the aisle, hes making sure hes not outdone on the campaign trail as he gets into campaigner in chief road. Its happening on the nascar stage. Hes the grandmaster there, where an estimated 150,000 people are in attendance. Joining us now monica alba. Monica, wish i could be there, because i do love me a couple of cars going around in circles. Thats always great. Reporter sure. Its a very high profile sporting event and really a madefortv moment for this president in which i would bet is going to make its way into a campaign ad soon. That would be my guess. The real act is actually going to the airing one of the president s new spots during the fox broadcast today. So this really is sort of a dual opportunity for the president as the campaigner in chief to make his case ahead of the election and use the trappings of the presidency. He did an air force one flay over on the way in. Hes going to be riding around on the track in the beast his vehicle with the first lady, and then hell be making remarks to everybody in attendance before giving that famous signal for the drivers to start their engines. Hes the second sitting president to ever attend this though others have attended nascar races. But this is an opportunity for him to make his general election pitch pitch and kind of reach those voters of course down here in battleground florida, but also the millions who will be tuning in. And that is the start of really a major counterprogramming week for him here. Hes going to be heading out to the west coast for three backtoback rallies in phoenix, Colorado Springs and las vegas on friday, the day before the democratic caucuses there, of course, richard. All right. Nbc newss monica alba. Thank you so much. Now the u. S. Government is bringing home nearly 380 americans from a quarantined cruise ship in japan. A charter plane arrived in the country earlier today too take the passengers to a containment site. That comes hours after even more cases were reported on the diamond princess cruise ship. That brings to total 355 onboard been more than 69,000 confirmed occasions in 24 cases around the world. The World Health Organization says this spreads faster and is more deadly than others like swine flu or ebola. Bill neely has the latest from hong kong. Reporter yes, hi. The first of hundreds of americans have been taken off that cruise ship where remember theyve been trapped for almost two weeks, and they are beginning their journey home. It didnt start smagtly. They were on bossuses just off cruise ship for hours. Many are now on that plane. They were told to wear layers of warm clothing, to bring food. Its a converted cargo plane with no windows. So pretty basic. It will be a long journey first of all to an air base in california and then for some of themself another military base in texas. And on those bases, they will begin another 14 days of quarantine, and some of the passengers that weve been speaking to not happy about that at all. One woman from utah says theyre being treated like criminals. She was asking, why didnt the u. S. Government decide this, you know, 12 days ago, before they started the quarantine on the ship . The number of infections on the ship really quite staggering, 70 in the last 24 hours, 67 new infections in the 24 hours before that. So 12 of the passengers on that ship have the infection, have the virus, and yet only a third of the passengers were actually tested. The u. S. State department is urging all the americans to get on these planes. Theres more than one, and fly home. If they dont they could be in japan for an indefinite period. But of course the kicker is that when they land in the u. S. They will have to be quarantined. Overall, the numbers of deaths and infections in china is falling, and the rate of serious cases is falling. The chinese taking the most extraordinary measures still. Hundreds of millions of chinese are being restricted in m way. The bank of china is withdrawing banknotes to disinfect them and store them for 14 days. The World Health Organization though is happy with all of that. It says that china has bought the world time. Richard, back to you. Bill, thank you so much for that reporting. While the coronavirus is top of mind, theres another more deadly outbreak if we can say that, that is causing trouble in the United States. The new numbers showing how widespread the flu has become this season. Its widespread, now across 44 states, and its proving to be deadly in some cases. 14,000 people in the u. S. Have died this season from influenza. 92 of them have been children and thats more than most years. Most of those children have the influenza b strain, a strain not seen since the early 19 sfloints. Doctors are encouraging people to get the flu shot. More fallout from attorney general bill barrs decision to intervene in the roger stone case. The calls against him are intensifying as more than 1,100 former prosecutors and Justice Department officials are calling for his resignation. Theyre also calling on current employees to blow the whistle if they see signs of unethical behavior at the doj. This all stems from last weeks decision by barb to override the sentencing recommendation for stone in favor of a more lenient one. That sparked accusations of political interference. There was more. Joining us now to the New York Times, justice correspondent katy benner, former contributor, joyce vance. Katy, you were telling me, youve been stuck youve been reporting on this all week. True. As we watch from the outside, the question is, what was happening between the president and his attorney general . Sure. So basic bill barr said to the president , you are making it hard for me to do my job. We saw a situation where at the Justice Department on monday and tuesday, it was very messy. The career prosecutors decided to recommend, only recommendation, the judge makes the final determined naiks, recommendcism to nine years for lying and witness tampering. Barr has said on the record publicly to abs news, he always thought that was too high. He had conversations with people at washington u. S. Attorneys office saying he thought that was too high and it would come in lower and he meant to override that, to reach in, which people are always going to be upset about, and change it. And then the president said, i want bill barr to change this. Now it looks like a political act. What barr was saying this is the kind of thing that makes it hard for me to do my job. Im going to do stuff that you like, because i believe in it, and im not going to bring charges against andy mccabe for lying. Hes somebody who President Trump voech wishes to see in jail. Barr is saying i would administer justice as i see fit. It completely lines up with what you, President Trump, see as fit. But when you undermine the case, come out and publicly comment on it, this is not helping. You have to stop. Well see what happens. No sitting cabinet official has pushed back this way. Joyce, is this all kosher . If the president of the United States is asking his attorney general, if those are critical of what has happened here, did come to pass, that the president is asking the attorney general potentially here to reach in . Well, i think its unclear, as katy says. We dont exactly know whether the attorney general was influenced by the president when he made this rather unusual decision to undermine the senfencing recommendation the career people made. What we do know, richard, is following the attorney generals interview, the president then tweeted and made it very clear that he believed that he, as president , had the right to intervene in criminal cases being prosecuted by the Justice Department. And weve heard nothing from the attorney general sense then. Weve heard crickets. I cant tell you how inappropriate this is for the attorney general to remain silent in the place of that derogation of dojs independence by the president. Bill barr must respond. He should resign. His silence is simply unacceptable. And thats been debated back and forth, katy, is it legal . Yes, it is. The president can do this or not. Thats part of the story. Then there are the four federal prosecutors who said, i dont like this. Im walking away from it. Which gives us the followup question here, what is the culture right now in the department of justice . Sure, inside of the department i think you see people of two minds. I think most people are glad that barr made this public statements that he made about the president , about his public comments, not just his tweets, but any comments about ongoing criminal cases. They were very clear they thought it was correct for barr to say this. And in that same interview barr said he can did me to go after his enemies but i do not have to do it and i will not when theres no case there. He did draw that line. There is a worry as to what happens next. As weve seen what happened will happen next . Weve seen with the president in the past as his frustration or anger grows, he often takes a look to see what pundits are saying about him, whether he looks weak or strong. Depending on how he feels in the weeks coming, what President Trump wants to do he will do. So i think inside the department, people are nervous. Weve drawn a line in the sand now. What happens if the president pushes through as he so often as done in the past . Does barr then resign . A lot of people think he would are have to then because otherwise he would lose integrity. The president continues to do this. What does it mean for you to stay . And then of course there are two minds, some people want barr to stay and a lot who are really worried hes just become so politicized and not sure if hes going to be the best leader. How i havei kaishs he is at this moment. When you look at oversight coming from the hill, what might happen next . Correct me if im wrong, the lawyers, federal prosecutors now will have to potentially answer to the judge as to why youre stepping away from the case, right . And what could congress do in terms of bringing these federal prosecutors to the hill to testify . There has been some talk from democrats that want to do that . Right. Its not at all clear how the judge will handle this. Its possible that the prosecutors will simply be permitted to absent themselves from the cases. Thats what doj lawyers do when they move on to other postings. The judge may wish to hear from them. In any event, federal judges have final control over sentencing decisions without regard to recommendations by either party. Congress has a constitutional oversight function that they must fulfill here. But some of these prosecutors remain doj employees and perhaps will revisit this saw during the impeachment proceedings, where the department, the executive branch tries to prevent them from testifying. It will be difficult to see how there might be executive privilege to assert here. But weve seen it asseted in unusual ways. I think the takeaway from barrs comments, for the attorney general, for the Justice Department, its not important only to avoid improper actions. Its important to avoid even the appearance of improprietor. Thats why every administration up until this one has had clear guidance on appropriation conversations between the white house. On criminal matters, those have been limited, so citizens could maintain kochbldence that there was no improper political interference. Although there is some communication thats proper, what is always improper is political interference, and trump by definition is engaging in that, trying to use the Justice Department to aid the sentence, theres no scenario under which thats appropriate behavior for a president. Thats rank political interferes in dojs work. Katy 15 seconds, whats next . Were going to see how the president responds, how barr responds. But wlal be interesting, well see how the president hes coming to the hill, barr . But not for a few weeks. Also what happens when the judge impose her final sentence . If its higher than what the Justice Department is recommending, the president is going to lash out. He can criticize the judge, they can have tough conversations and words for attorney general barr. Joyce, what do you think . Is this judge going to go with the recommendation and complete buck what the attorney general may or may not want here . So the issue here is whether or not stones conduct when he threatened a witness, threatened the witnesses dog, whether that will cas the judge to go above the guideline range. That seven to nine year sentence is preyed hardcore. The judge might come in underneath them. The problem is no matter what she does, its damned if you do or dont. After the president weighed in, he influenced the sentence. Great to talk to both of you. Katy benner and joyce vance, thank you both so much for your perspective and expertise. The next democratic debate, three days away. Coming up one of our moderators joins us from nevada to talk about the Big Questions. Plus joe bidens campaign is in question after a poor showing in iowa and New Hampshire. Were following the former Vice President as he tries to deal with an enthooiziasm problem. Were just getting into the meat of getting to that number delegates you need to be able to win this election. And im confident were going to be in good shape. Eciate what mas each person unique. Thats why i like Liberty Mutual. They get that no two people are alike and customize your Car Insurance so you only pay for what you need. Almost done. What do you think . I dont see it. Be in your moment. Ask your doctor about ibrance. I was viewed as the frontrunner, the target on my back, put through the test. Well, that was former Vice President joe biden, making the case that his campaign not in trouble despite disappointing results in the first contest of 2020. Theres now growing brief that that could put his bid for the prous in jeopardy. Hes out in the race campaigning in las vegas today. Nbc news 2020 mariana sotomayor, who is following the campaign. That is the question, right . Because today this weekend, mariana, we can Say Something different when we look at the National Polls. He is no longer the frontrunner. Bernie sanders is. Reporter yeah. That is right. But here one thing i did want to stress is that nevada is different than iowa and New Hampshire, at least for the support for joe biden. He is as you mentioned in those polls especially here in nevada, he is right behind senator sanders. Not within the margin of error and potentially being able to beat him. But as i mentioned, the support is different. People here are much more enthusiastic, and kind of adding to bidens points that a majority of the country, a majority of minorities havent voted, those crowds are filled now with minorities, and iowa and New Hampshire you saw the majority being older voters, much more white. Here its actually the opposite. You see a majority of hispanics, africanamericans, and also asianpacific islanders making up these crowds. The minorities are now more white americans. However whether that translates into a bigger turnout for the caucus or even bigger turnout in South Carolina is still something to be seen. And you sense that within the campaign. They are still cautiously optimistic, doing as much as they can, putting biden not only in front of as many cameras as possible but as many people in the days leading up to the caucuses here. Mariana sotomayor, with joe biden. As she was mentioning, were three days away from a very important thing happening there, thats the democratic debate. Five candidates have qualified to take the stage so far, and explain to the nevada and the votes there and a National Audience as well right here, why they are most qualified to beat donald trump in november. Were joined by John Raulston who just happens to be one the moderators for the debate. Are you peaking at the right time . There in nevada, who is peaking right now would you say as we lead up to next saturday . Well, with all the usual caveats, its a caucus, early voting is just started. Theyve never done that before. We dont know what the turnout has been. Have i given myself enough leeway yet . I guess i would say it seems clear to me based on what happened in iowa and New Hampshire and the formidable organization that he has here, that Bernie Sanders has the momentum in nevada. I did well here in 2016, as you may recall. He almost beat Hillary Clinton. This time hes got an even Better Organization run by political pros and has the most fervent followers. Its hard to tell because other candidates have the organizations, mayor pete does, Elizabeth Warren who has like dropped out of every conversation now has a very Good Organization here. And joe biden is making his last stand essentially in nevada. And then in South Carolina hes got to show that those poor showings in iowa and the disastrous showing at 9 in New Hampshire dont reflect the biden campaign. Much different electorate, right . Right. Much more diverse than iowa and New Hampshire. This is his chance. But hes got to catch up to bernie, i think. We were saying, this is that second phase, if youre a democratic candidate right now, youve made it through the grassroots, moderate, white vote spaces. Now youre moving into the minority states, nevada and South Carolina. And then the big one when you head towards super tuesday. When we look at the nevada poll coming out, Bernie Sanders as you were mentioning, ahead. Joe biden behind. Then everybody else. Youve got warren, steyer, buttigieg, klobuchar, all in that 10 to 13 , number eight for our control room. Who might break out there in nevada . You still have 8 undecided. Thats also up for play. Heres the difficulty. Is that poll right . It might have been at the time it was taken. It feels sort of right to me, richard, in the sense that Bernie Sanders i think is ahead of the field, and the others are grouped together in some way. Its uncertain. But whos likely to break out . Remember, you know, the caucus isnt until a week from yesterday. That is the proverbial eternity in politics. I do hear there is a day bait on wednesday as well. , you know, john, you saw what happened in New Hampshire. And that helped certainly one candidate, so it appears, and thats Amy Klobuchar, right . The performance that if they were to bring that same performance and carbon copy that into this week, which you will be there moderating and asking questions, what will that do to the electorate there in nevada . Who will be charged up . Who will be enthused . And who will just go, ho hum . Its a good question. Amy klobuchar did good in New Hampshire, not quite as good adds buttigieg. She had very little infrastructure on the ground, but shes made a big tv buy. I think her campaign here is interesting to watch. I got to tell you, richard, i was on a little bit earlier and in the same studio at zero dark 30, and there she was about to do a bunch of shows brimming with confidence. Ive seen politicians project confidence before. But i think she believes that she got a turbo charge from New Hampshire. Again though, a caucus is an organizational effort. There are a lot of wild cards out there with the early voting. And what i call the iowa effect. Are a lot of people not going to want to caucus next weekend because they saw what happened in iowa and maybe just fill out a paper ballot for is etially what is a primary vote, yesterday, today, monday and tuesday . Thats a whole other question. John, well do another segment on that one. John raulston of the nevada independent, also a moderator as i was mentioning earlier, for this weeks debate, wednesday, 9 00 p. M. Eastern, to see john raul stom. As well as other colleagues you can see on the screen right now, live from nevada. Mississippi is now under a state of emergency as the state braces for historic and unprecedented flooding. More than 2,000 homes around jackson area are in danger of being overtaken by floodwaters. The pearl river could crest he to levels not seen in decades. In mississippi, the governor there, tate reed, says they are prepared for this to be the third worst flood in the states history. Blaine alexander in jackson mississippi for us. How does this look right now and are they ready for that, excuse me, for that third worst, as the governor is saying . Reporter well, richard, youre right. They are placing for near historiclevel flooding. You can see its bad. Whats so bad about this behind me, it is still continuing to grow. The river is still increasing. In fact experts say that theyve got about another foot to go or so before its going to crest. I mean, you see right here, these are some of the houses that are among those thousand or so that experts say are in harms way, are in risk, many of them in that mandatory flood evacuation zone. You can see a car over here, see where the stop sign is, that street sign, and just how high that water has gotten. Keep in mind the water is still rising. Earlier this morning the governor gave a briefing here in jackson and said they dont expect the water to start reseeding for another week or so approximately a week before people are able to get back in their homes. We just spoke to people, who came to look and survey. They say the water is this far from their back door and continuing to rise. One thing thats not going to help, the fact that this is the beginning of a wet week ahead. It serves as a crucial test for candidates trying to court a key constituency the Democratic Party, africanamericans and their votes. The latest East Carolina University poll shows joe biden leading among all 2020 candidates in South Carolina as for now. The Vice President polls there at 36 support while we have Bernie Sanders at 20. Tom steyer rounding out the top three at 17 while the other camps fall below double digits. There appears to be a growing generational quite. The result and effort by black millennial and accident rags z to influence older family members against voting for the vormer Vice President. Joining us now the host of the woke af daily podcast. Danielle, we have talked about this in the last 24 hours in great depth. Why is it that millennial and jen z voters are saying dont vote for the former Vice President or anything else . Why are they doing it. Because they have a fundamental understanding of what is needed in this moment. They are looking for progressivism. What joe biden represents is a centrist, he is talking to folks and saying i will work across the aisle. What aisle . Republicans burned it down. I think millennials have a fundamental understanding what is at risk right now. We have to understand when we poll black voters it is generally folks over the age of 50. There is a pocket of educated passionate group of black millennials that nobody is paying attention to. Is it a lack of understanding of what civil rights have meant to their parents and as opposed to what millennials and jen zers understand . When we look at the unfortunate hashtags, the people that have been turned into hashtags, the men and women and People Killed by police, this is something that black millennials are facing on a daily basis. Thats their experience. Their their experience. Their parents may have come up against billy clubs. For them it is not enough for joe biden to have been Barack Obamas best friend, not enough for him to have been the Vice President to the first black president of the United States. It is the question of what have you done for me lately. The best you could get in the black community 30 years ago was joe biden. Thats why the parents like it. For the millennials and genzers the best you can get is not joe biden. No. Elizabeth warren has plan after plan, for black colleges, plans to relieve students of debt, black students in particular are being crushed under student debt. She comes out with plans for global warming, a huge issue for young people. Bernie sanders has done a little bit of that, but he also does not call out black voters by their name. Right . He doesnt also like try and directly reach out to the voters. He talks about big economic plans that will have a trickle down effect but its the not specific to this community. Who is really interesting to watch in the dynamic is steyer. Lets poll ull up the poll. The billionaire, white american, from california, and he is doing well i mean relatively well for being a noname, a noname for this community broadly speaking. Yeah. I think, again what happened . It goes hand in hand with what money does politics. If you have the money to blanket ads and push out Television Radio and what have you it becomes an identification issue. Is it because he doesnt have the history, the baggage issue . Yeah. Is that why . Also there is no record to point to with tom steyer. He is kind of a blank slate. Maybe you can take him on his word because he doesnt have anything bad to go babb on. He doesnt have the crime bill that joe biden is fighting against. He doesnt have, you know, other issues, wars and things that he may have voted for, may have not. Hes a blank slate. I think a lot of people can look at that and say hmm maybe. 17 at least in that poll. Danielle thank you so much. A topic we will of course cover again. Im richard liu live at msnbc headquarters here in new york city. Thanks for spending this hour with us. We have a whirlwind of activity to share with you. The race for the white house. President trump made an taerns at the daytona 500 a short time ago where he served as grand marshal for todays race. His visit included a flyover from air force one and a trip around the track in his limousine nicknamed the beast. Democrats candidates fanned out across the country but still keeping nevada straight in front of them where voting is taking place until tuesday. Now is a critical time for the eight remaining candidates as the stakes get higher as they try to win the crucial minority votes. Bernie sanders is emphasizing his messaging about getting money out of politics. His main target at this moment is bloomberg. We will not defeat donald trump with a candidate who instead of holding the crooks on wall street accountable blamed race igs policies such as red lining for the financial crisis. Josh letterman has been spending the day with Bernie Sanders supporters, joins us now from carson city. You know, the energy good, riding the polling. He is looking good. He is now the frontrunner. Last week we couldnt say that. This week we can say that, based on the polls. Reporter just on friday showed Bernie Sanders leading here in nevada as well. Expected to get 25 of the vote based on that poll from friday. We will have to see how that plays out after the debate thats coming up on wednesday heading into the caucuses next weekend. But sanders has really been training his fire here in nevada on Mike Bloomberg who is not competing in the nevada caucuses but has been rising in National Polls, Bernie Sanders suggesting that bloomberg could not get the kind of excitement needed to win against donald trump in november. We have been talking to some voters here in nevada, actually just outside of a restaurant where Bernie Sanders was having breakfast to see whether they agreed with sanders attacks on bloomberg. Listen to what they say. I want the see him on the debate stage. I want to see him answer some of the questions. If if he can get the right answers out there, then keep driving the way he needs to, there is a chance. But until he does that, you cant i cant go there. Reporter what about the idea that bloomberg is trying to buy the election by putting all of his own money into it . Does that bother you. It is a free country. I like that he is running his own campaign with the help of the communities instead of just coming in with the big bucks. Reporter now even as the candidates are competing in the primary for the Democratic Party here in nevada, richard, also looking forward to the general election. Here in carson city, an area that trump won by 14 points against Hillary Clinton democrats hope they can change that map come the general election in november. Carson city, for those familiar with the area, very close to lake tahoe and with the border of california. How is that part of the electorate than around las vegas, which is farther south . Reporter thats right. The area here is affected by the California Media market. So they get some of that bleed in from california where bloomberg has been spending millions of dollars on the air. It is a different type of economy here than from the las vegas area, which is much more folk used on service, tourism, hospitality, as a result a lot of Union Support in las vegas, a different type of climate here up in carson city. Josh letterman there with the Bernie Sanders campaign. Great reporting as always. Thanks josh. Pete buttegeig has been the hot candidate in the two states that have already picked under candidates. He is leading right now in the delegates. But nevada is different. Buttegeig is finding himself working hard to convince voters he can win minorityrich states. He also took time this morning to respond to Rush Limbaughs remarks that he has not been able to win because he has been quote kissing his husband on stage. I love my husband. I have been faithful to my husband. On stage we usually go for a hug. I love him very much. I am not going to take lessons on the likes of family values from Rush Limbaugh. You heard me talk with josh a second ago, garrett, you are south of where he is a. It is a Different Group of voters. At the buttegeig campaign at the moment, thats the first time it is brought up. How he has responded we heard part of it on cnn earlier today. Look for the buttegeig campaign his Sexual Orientation is something he cant change. It is who he is. It is part of the appeal for some voters. He address it and moves on. He wants to talk about issues that affect other people not the issues that affect him at home. We are waiting for him to start this rally in las vegas. This is the greatest opportunity i have had over the last 24 hours to get an apples to apples comparison. We are six miles from a Bernie Sanders rally i covered yesterday. They pulled comparable crowds. Large energetic crowds. This crowd a hair older, a ha hair than the Bernie Sanders crowd. A hair older, garrett . Explain that. Threw every exit poll we have seen the results we have seen in the early state primaries, Bernie Sanders, his voters have generally been on the younger side. It is key to his appeal, right . Sanders says he can turn out Younger Voters in droves. Thats part of his electability argument. Buttegeig says he is the youngest candidate in the race and he can fire up Younger Voters. There is a battle between them that they are the candidates who speaks to it. Michael peele, the comedian is on the stage right now, appealing to the younger demographic, voters who are not as reliable as Younger Voters but when they show up can absolutely swing a election. Thats showing up in the polling there in nevada. Thanks for the reporting from las vegas, nevada. From High School Gyms to race car tracks just a short time ago the president wrapped up remarks at the daytona 500. As grand marshal of the race he delivered the famous start your engines command to drivers. Tonight is the first of several Campaign Events for the president looking to steal some of the spotlight from democrats ahead of the caucus. Joining us now, monica alba. Start your good mornings go, monica thats right, revving up here as we get into a critical point for the president s reelect campaign. Todays event at the daytona 500 is technically an official event, a white house event, thats why you see him using all the teetures of the presidency. The air force one fly over, the beast which you saw on the track earlier. He gave some remarks which didnt exactly mimic a Campaign Speech in terms of tone or anything we have seen. They were mostly referring to the military. It had a Campaign Vibe with some of the music, the play list we are used to. Then tough campaign flying an aerial banner over the whole thing and running a brandnew ad, a 30second spot that has the daytona 500 theme. No mistaking the two are connected even though this is an official event for the president and the first lady in their official capacity. It is notable, this is the first time the president has been in this grand marshal roll. He says he has been a fan of nascar for a long time. This is the latest in a strong of highprofile sporting events we have seen him attend in recent months. A very warm reception for the president there, the crowd loving it breaking into chants of u. S. A. , and for more years. If you are a gear head, a motor sports fan, if you are a wrencher, when you see air force one, that up close, zooming by, and the beast after that, it must have been wild for those at the daytona 500. A unique scene, certainly. When you look at how close air force one came, it was about 800 feet off the ground. I think it made for some stunning visuals. I think you can expect to see those used in the campaign in the kmomg months as well. Americans are making their way home, but it is not over yet. The hurdles they must cross after being stranded on a cruise ship with hundreds of confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Government released nearly 380 americans from the ship docked in japan. A charter plane will now take the rescued passengers to a containment site in california. Their journey home comes just hours after more cases were reported. 355 people on board have confirmed cases. Globally, the number is more than 69,000. And that has spread across now 24 countries as of today. In california, home to the largest population of Asian Americans in the United States, it is an example nationwide where there is growing concern that misinformation on the coronavirus is sparking some antiasian racism. The situation is so dire that local l. A. County officials called a press conference to ward off the public to yielding to antiasian stereotypes saying outside of china the risk remains very low. Joining me now to discuss, california congresswoman judy chu, who is also the chair of the congressional Asian American pacific caucus, we also have with us the director of the Asian Pacific policy and Planning Council in los angeles. Representative, as we look at this concern of if you look asian, if you are from china, from chinese descent, you might be carrying the coronavirus. Thats taking it to its nth degree here. Is that happening in Southern California . Unfortunately there are those who have she is perceptions. These are stereotypes. They are not true. Just to put things in perspe perspective, there are 3. 8 million Chinese Americans living in the United States. But how many case of coronavirus virus are there in the United States . 15. Each of those casings has to do with a traveler who has come back from wuhan or is their spouse and had sustained contact with that person. So i think that the risk for the American Public is very low. And certainly, it is not true that just because you are Asian American you have the coronavirus. In fact, it is far from true. And let me also say that there is a stereotype that because somebody is wearing a face mask that we have coronavirus. We had a case in new york where the chinese American Woman wearing a face mask was assaulted simply because she was wearing it in many cases people are wearing it because they think this is a way to protect themselves. You know, as you know so well, this is not new, necessarily to the year 2020. You can go back to the 19th century in california. You can look at the antiexclusion act, the chinese exclusion act specifically, and it led to the idea of the theme of the sick man of asia. Those were some of the thematics back in the day. Are we seeing similarities to that here today . I think we are, richard. If you look at the yellow peari, as you referenced. We are seeing hints of it. It led to the chinese exclusion act in the late 18s. Even the japaneseamerican internment here in the continental u. S. In the 1940s. So i think what we are seeing is a fear and hysteria that are possibly taking hold. Thats why we really it was important for us to bring together our Civic Leaders and address some of the misinformation, the hysteria and make sure that we set the record straight for angelinos and folks around the country. I was mentioning here, representative, about leaders having to come forward and have a press conference that reminded me of other times in our recent history where leaders in communities had to come forward and say, do not allow these bits of misinformation to move forward. What are you telling your constituents there in the southland . Well, in fact, i just came from that press conference because the fear is not only with the mainstream American Public. But it is also with the Asian American possible and what we see is that the attendance in restaurants and at supermarkets is as much as 50 lower right now. But we were there to say that the risk to the American Public is low, that the cases of coronavirus in america are very, very low, and that the ones who got it had sustained contact. It is not just through some kind of casual walk through a restaurant. And certainly, you cant get it from buying a package at the supermarket. So we urged everybody to be calm and to base their decisions on science and not fear, and to continue doing their regular activities so that they can live a normal life. We will get through this. This is certainly a catastrophe for the world commune overall. I was giving some of the statistics a moment ago, this as they work towards a treatment for coronavirus. But here in the United States, that concern is not only in california. I was also reading reporting out of an Arizona University where, as the reporter was going out, had found College Students of asian descent who when they would sit down in the cafeteria otherwise would get up, stand up, and leave, and they felt very personally affronted by that. Is that too much, though . Is that going too far in perhaps seeing something that may not be there . Absolutely. As the congresswoman referenced there are so few cases here in the United States. And even those cases were really just spouses or individuals who were in the wuhan province. And so i think what we need to do and what we tried to do through the press conference is really clear up the misinformation, and you know, remind folks that, you know, you should wash your hands, you should be healthy. But otherwise continue to live your lives. We know here in los angeles through social media there have been numerous attacks, sort of verbal mostly, what you have referenced. But also, we saw and learned of a child who was actually physically attacked and accused of having the coronavirus simply because he was asianamerican. So here it is based on racial animus as opposed to real concerns that people might have about the spread, which there is no factual basis for it. This potentially being a vehicle for manifestations of other believes that are completely misled at the moment. Thank you both for bringing attention to this. Appreciate you taking the time today. A rise in the polls is bringing more scrutiny for Michael Bloomberg. Backlash over stop and frisk. Also some allegations of sexism resurfacing. Plus crit sim of buying the race. Michael bloomberg is continuing to be the hot topic contender as he rise inside the polls and gets the attention of his fellow democratic candidates. However, with the attention comes, of course, scrutiny. He is facing continuing backlash over stop and frisk. Also under the microscope here, allegations of sexism in the past which led bloomberg to tweet yesterday, saying as i have demonstrated throughout my career i will always be a champion for women in the workplace. We are joined now by eleanor randolph, author of the many lives of Michael Bloomberg. Also a former New York TimesEditorial Board member. You have seen a lot, eleanor. You know the person that you have written about here. If you are going to be part of the Oppo Research coming after Michael Bloomberg right now, they are pushing the idea and the question, is he a racist . You know, no, he isnt a racist. And you know, he if you look at what he has done as mayor, if you look at how he ran his company, he has not i mean, he often says that i will hire anybody, male, female, any color, any religion. Uhhuh. And so he judges people that way. Now, the truth of the matter is, stop and frisk is the big hole in his legacy. And almost everybody that has written about him, including me everybody has said that thats a problem for him. Right. He it took him a very long time to realize how much damage he had done to the black and Hispanic Community in new york city. What was the pivot point for him when he decided, yes, i am damaging these two communities . You know, i actually this sounds awful, but i think the real pivot point came for him when he realized the numbers werent doing what he thought they were going to do. If you look at that quote thats come out, you know, the Aspen Institute quote. Thats right. Resurfaced. If you look at that, one of the things he says, crime will go up if you dont do stop and frisk. That did not happen. This is a numbers man. Business guy, thats right, through and through. I think he realized he was wrong. I mean, look, these guys dont like to admit they are wrong, ever. The counterbalance to this, those who are critical of Michael Bloomberg is where he put his money. Thats right. How he walked the talk. And the amount of hundreds of millions that he invested in minority communities and leaders along the way. Thats right. And one of the things he did and there has been some criticism about this, but i think it is really important. He has helped mayors, really, across the globe, but especially in the United States. Right. Many of these mayors are appearance. He just believed after being mayor of new york city for 12 years. Right. That mayors get things done. And if you you know, his campaign is Michael Bloomberg he kind of believes that, doesnt. He get things zmoon as a former mayor himself. Thats right. The other question that has been put out based on, again, some reporting, there are the cases that involve the question of sexism. Give us the insight to that and try the answer the question for those, again, who are being very critical of Michael Bloomberg saying he is a sexist. You can look at the comments that he has made . You know, first of all, he came from wall street. And you know, if you if you have gone to the movies, you know what wall street was like, especially in the 70s and 80s. So he had to really adjust his language after that because the language of wall street is very sexist, and really quite awful if you want to know the truth. And so that was still there, and kind of, he would blurt it out every so often. But the thing is that the main person in his life, the main person who runs his company, his philanthropy, his Political Campaign s a woman, patty harris. And he you know, every time he fires a woman, it is all about firing a woman, but he has hired a bunch of them, including in the city. Let me ask you this then, eleanor is he a learner . Does he change . Has he changed since those we have really dug into those two Big Questions of him in the past. But who is he today . And is he still learning . You know, the editor on my book was alice may, who died recently, at simon schuster. The one thing she said after reading this book was that he improved with aim, that he began to realize that the ways that he had been unfair and wrong and he started putting his money you know, in gun control, climate control. He changed. Antismoking. Thats what you are saying. He got to be a better person, i could argue. What would he grade your book very quickly n five seconds. What would he give it, from his point of view, an a, a b, a c . He called me and said it wasnt terrible for somebody from the New York Times, you know. It wasnt terrible for i dont know what that means. I would say more than that about you eleanor, thank you very much it has been a pleasure to meet you and to chat about this very important topic. Eleanor randolph, the author of the many lives of Michael Bloomberg. Attorney general bill barrs decision to override sentencing decisions in the roger stone set off this week another showdown between Congressional Democrats on the president. House speaker Nancy Nancy Pelosi accused barr of having deeply damaged the rule of law by offering the president s longtime friend a more lenient sentence. Today more than 1100 former federal prosecutors and Justice Department officials appear to agree with leader pelosi. They all signed to an open letter calling for his resignation. Joining us now is politico congressional reporter andrew des dareio, so is the chapter of your book this week, andrew. What is the drive into what right now bill barr is in the middle of and what he might do next . Well, richard, shortly after trumps acquittal, House Democrats confronted a very stark reality, which is all that they could do or all that they were willing to do apparently was to issue these strongly worded statements in response. You saw what Speaker Pelosi said right there, adam schiff for example, accused the attorney general and the president of an abuse of power. You will recall thats exactly what they charged the president with in the impeachment articles. You saw that on full display immediately after the roger stone controversy in which some House Democrats were saying bill barr should resign. Others were saying the House Judiciary Committee should launch an investigation. Others saying the Inspector General through start an investigation. The House Democratic leadership doesnt want to fully embrace a full flown investigation especially after they just lost on impeachment. Are they going to do this . Is congress a Judiciary Committee going to ask please come forward, federal prosecutors want to talk to you . It is possible the four prosecutors who stepped down from the case could come in for testimony. That will be up to them, v. And it will be up to the Judiciary Committee, chairman nadler and nancy pelosi whether or not they want to issue s ps to get that testimony. This week they secured a subpoena for bill barr to testify at the end of march. Anything could happen between now and then. This might not be the front burner controversy at the time by the time that rolls around. Its tough position that House Democrats fine themselves in. He says, having a lot of history, andrew does here, things could change in six weeks. Thats right. What happened last week, between the attorney general and the president . We want to know. On the outside you could say he is finally fighting back, the attorney general is, or two, this is very well scripted . Thats right, richard, the immediate question was whether this was actually a genuine rebuke on behalf of attorney general barr or if it was more of a coordinated effort to take the pressure off of the president in a week in which he was being accused of improper political interference in a Justice Department criminal case. I think it ended up being the latter because we saw the president didnt lash out at the attorney general on twitter like he usually does for those, you know, in congress, or even within his administration or outside of his administration for that, rather, who criticize him. Yeah. We would have expected some sort of response from the president saying no, i am actually doing my job and i am doing what i am supposed to be doing as president here. But we didnt really rebuke the attorney general in response that suggests to me that this was maybe mosh of a coordinated effort rather than a genuine rebuke on behalf of the attorney general. When we look at the democrats then here andrew, and you see it every day here, they are looking towards reelection in 2020, and as has to be balanced here, with an appetite for complicate for this president and for republicans. What is their appetite based on, hey i have got the get reelected in many of those trump districts for a couple dez democrats, right, that are now looking at i need to get reelected . What is the appetite for conflict . You said it right, richard, the appetite is very low right maw. A lot of the moderate democrats, socalled front liner democrats who come from districts that the president won in 2016 and still polls well in. They dont want anything to do with an impeachmentlike investigation. They got it off their plates and feel like they can move on from it. But those democrats feel like especially after they lost on impeachment they would come off as looking overzealous like sore losers if they were to pursue similar investigations regarding abuse of power, whatever happens at the Justice Department, thing like that. That is a top consideration for Speaker Pelosi whose main job at this point is to make sure that House Democrats secure and hold their majority through 2020. Great to have you, andrew. Political congressional reporter andrew des dareio for us from washington, d. C. Senator Amy Klobuchar seems to be Building Momentum at the right time. Some are thinking. Senator Amy Klobuchar is building on the momentum from her third place finish in the New Hampshire primary. And announcing new fundraising totals this morning. Listen here. In just a little over a week we raised nearlily 12 million on line, mostly from regular people, new people, who gave. Thats the first time in a Campaign Like this that you have seen a surge from people just seeing a debate. How do you want to call it . Do you want to call it cloebment up and what it says about women running for president . Joining me, anna vox. Thanks for being with us today. That is the question, she was asked this question, Pete Buttegeig versus her, same age, who would she prefer . He said i would prefer me, but clearly there is a dynamic here. How was she discussing this dynamic in a way thats understandable and not putting off voters that seems to be working now . You know, i think it has been really interesting to watch her work on these kinds of questions because people who study sexism in the workplace, they say that when women bring this kind of thing up chef to be very careful. It is unfortunate but often if they are direct they are penalized and they have to do this delicate dance. I think we actually see the senator doing this really well where she says i respect pete so much, i am honored to be on stage with him. At the same time look at my record and look at his. She elevates herself in a sult way that so far seems to be working. That is the very dynamic in industry, that you cannot come out and say i am the foundemini dont to this. Thats not what you want to hear in the workplace but she is saying i stand for these values. What caused her to find that magic note. This debate was crucial for her. The debate in New Hampshire. I think a lot of folks were attributing her good showing in that state to the performance in the debate. She showed her record. She made an impassioned plea to voters, i see you, i understand you. A lot of folks are looking for that. At least in this case she delivered. It was an interesting point. It was like something happened as we were watching it. We dont know what. Whether it was because of that time her being on the road, she spoke to people and something clicked. But it seemed like she hit a different gear in the debate. Everyone at work was saying look at her, hes coming out strong. I think the question is whether she can sustain this. There is lots of questions about that. The demographics in New Hampshire are different than the demographics in the country. She struggled with black voters and hasnt connected with them. There is a lot of questions going forward. Want to bring up the New Hampshire democratic primary voters, according to Women College graduates, the numbers that came up in ump in, 29 for klobuchar. 24 for Pete Buttegeig, 21 for sanders, and 12 for warren. Thats from our exit polls. What do you glean from that . I think it is interesting she is doing well specifically with collegeeducated women. There is a wonderful piece by journalist sarah jones that talked about it. It talked about it as a double edge sword. Klobuchar is a bit of a girl boss. There have been reports of her as a to have boss and maybe mistreats employees. There is an idea she is strong, maybe perhaps too strong or strong in the wrong way woman who has gotten ahead. Some can relate to that and others cannot. Who is going to get either her or warren . Is it going to be voters who are women . Voters who are men. Both, as has been said about the black voter, the typical black voter . They want somebody to win but not just someone who may be black or a minority. None of these are moneyi lites. There isnt a woman vote in this country. People tend to vote their party more than their gender. That said i think there is starting to be a hunger for a female member in all ticket levels. There is a sense that people want more women in government right now. Whether it is president we dont know. Difficult question. But how to warren and klobuchar handle the dynamic you wrote about differently . The differences between klobuchar and warren, one, warren is running more to the left of klobuchar. Thats been difficulty for her in part because she is competing with sanders for voters. Klobuchar is running towards the middle. There is gender element, too, which is that Research Shows that voters think that female candidates are more liberal than male candidates. Are they worried is this person going to be too liberal to beat trump . The worry may be stronger with warren than it is sanders. Klobuchar is a med rat. There are a lot of intersecting things affecting the elect tort right now. And the addition or sub subtraction for the gender issue, gender dynamic. What is the one factor to watch when we want the see how a woman might do in 2020 . What is the number you watch . I dont watch the polls for this question but i like to hear from voters. You know, you hear really mixed things. Talk to voters. Yeah. Sometimes you hear them talk about likability. Sometimes you hear them say they are excited to see a woman up there. I am going to talk to you. Anna north, compelling conversation. Will its do this begun. Nevada is the first state in the west to vote in the primary. Nevada is the first state in this election cycle to have a large pop laigs of minority voters. 29 of nevadans are considered hispanic or latino. With new mexico and california votes come up, disasters know they have to have a clear message for latino voters and their concerns. Before this used to be a land of opportunity, you know, people would come to california or to the United States of america to be able to have a life, to make a life, to make better, you know, opportunities. We are joined now by victoria defrancesco of the university of texas. Good to see you. This is that test. I was saying this earlier. We went through iowa and much in. That was really the white vote, the moderate vote, the you have to be on the ground grassroots vote. We are now moving into these very important states for all of the candidates who have a challenge on their own of answering the question how will they do with minority voters. What do you think they will learn from nevada . Nevada is so important because it is really when we see a mirror of the country. The first two contests were not, they were a skewed vision of where america is today. With nevada we are seeing a zoom in on the latino vote and we tonight know what is going to happen. What we saw in 2016 was Hillary Clinton won the caucus, but we also saw some very strong polling results for sanders among latinos. There was a lot of controversy whether he got majority or not. Long story short, it was a very contested vote. We are going into nevada seeing Bernie Sanders also in a very strong position but some question marks around that, too, richard. Yeah. Because he is doing very well among the youth and among latinos who are both segments of the electorate that we know dont have the best track record of turning out to vote like the older demographic. Thats an important point to make. Because often whether it is the minority vote, they are often put in blochs, one come flex is the generational difference and the view on the values that they may share but have a different understanding of what that value might mean. For instance, civil rights, immigration . Lets take immigration. For a latino in nevada who shares a household with their sister, is an undocumented immigrant, they are a andrea mitcheller, perhaps, the issue of immigration is going to be near and dear to them as will be health care and education and whatnot. But for somebody who is maybe a fifth, sixth generation latino, their folks came over in the late 1800s, issue doesnt have that same impact. It is that nuance that is so important to understand the latino electorate. And you have to be cautious when you are looking at numbers from pollsters who dont necessarily have that cultural nuance, that understanding of the cultural facets of the pan ethnicity that is latino, hispanic, and latinx. The idea that these blochs of minority voters i am sorry i am using that word but we talked about the come flexion and the layers and level to them. They are up for come and get us. We are not set on one candidate right now. At least thats what it seems like in the polling . Yeah, you have wiggle room of folks who are not decided. The other piece thats so interesting here richard is again traditionally young folks dont turn out at the same rate. Yeah. But what we saw in 2018 was something that defied all expectations. We saw a 70 increase in youth turnout in the the 2018 election compared to 2014. Uhhuh. What this means is that there is a possibility to see some real change in South Carolina and in nevada if youth who are saying they are going to turn out actually does. I think this is the other really important thing to watch for is the youth across the board in terms of latinos, africanamericans, Asian Americans and youth as well. Victor qua, what a great conversation. We will be looking at the data when it comes out of both of those states because we understand when it comes to latino voters and more it is different in every state and it is not regionality that we all know so well. Speaking of latino voters ander mo, Elizabeth Warren is trying to make a comeback in nevada. To win it, she will have to win that particular group of voters. In the next hour on msnbc live, my colleague Alicia Menendez will talk to the Warren Campaign elector of latinx outreach about her message. For the next week the capital political universe is nevada, where early voting is underway for a second straight day. But the debate is set for wednesday and the caucus on saturday. It is an allout battle over who can grab the majority of the 36 delegates on the table. For more on the ground game lets go to Josh Letterman our Nbc News National Political reporter. He is following the Sanders Campaign in carson city. Josh, tell us what is happening in carson city. Alicia, Bernie Sanders wasted no time ripping into Michael Bloomberg as he took the stage behind me in carson city. He mocked the former new york mayor saying he is struggling because he is down to his last 60 million. Also taking aim at Michael Bloomberg for not campaigning here in nevada and South Carolina, iowa, and the other early states. But he also deployed a new weapon against Michael Bloomberg. And that is a fellow former new york mayor, former mayor bill deblasio who recently endorsed Bernie Sanders. Today is the first time that deblasio is campaigning for sanders on the campaign trail. He used the opportunity to attack bloomberg over his stop and frisk policy. Listen to what he had to say just a few minutes ago. We were brainwashed. A lot of us didnt believe it. A lot of us fought back. I am sorry to report to you that the chief proponent of stop and frisk is in fact running for president of United States in this election.
