Next two critical weeks. Early voting ends tomorrow. On wednesday the las vegas debate. Saturday, five days from now the nevada caucuses. 12 days until the South Carolina primary. 15 days until interest tuesday. Bernie sanders is going into nevada with some moment temperature. This weekend he had more than 1,000 people in carson city, more than 11,000. Joe biden seven points behind, but sanders not taking anything for granted, as he launched his two final tv ads there today ahead of the caucuses. And while Michael Bloomberg has not yet qualified for wednesdays dday, he still could, and his name looms large after dumping hundreds of millions into super tuesday states and a flurry of advertisements, he faces a barrage of attacks. Will he be able to take the heat whoever he does go head to head with his democratic opponents . Lets go to or road warriors, andi vitaly. Mike memoli, and Josh Letterman joins us with the latest on Michael Bloombergs campaign. Josh, the big question surrounding bloomberg is, a, will he make the debate stage, and if he does, will he definitely be there . What are you hearing from his campaign . Chris, i just got off the phony with a Campaign Official who says, yes, if he qualifies for that debate, he will be there on that stage here in las vegas on wednesday, but hes not there yet. Bloomberg needs one forqualifying poll before 11 59 p. M. On tuesday night where he hits 10 nationally in a poll thats qualifying for that debate in order to make that debate stage. Well have to see whether or not he makes it. One of the parlor games being played on the campaign trail is, is it a good or bad thing for Michael Bloomberg to be on that stage . Hes getting plenty of ad play, and if he is on the stage, hell have candidates looking to take him down a peg. Bernie sanders went into this with a bad showing. So whats their strategy between now and saturday . Reporter as the band strikes up, of course. One of the great things i found covering joe biden all these year is sometimes when hes asked a blunt question, he giving a fairly short answer. A voters asked him frankly what the heck has gone on with your campaign . You should have had all these advantages. Biden got into the weeds with the gentleman. He said beginning from the early stages of the campaign when they looked at the demographics of all the early states, they knew that iowa and New Hampshire would be tough. Looking at the democrats especially, he said theyre very good people there, theyre just mostly white, and he laid out how he anticipates the campaign moving forward. He said his base in the Democratic Party has always been africanAmerican Voters and workingclass white voters, and the growing latino population. Its on thoughs two fronts with workingclass voters and unions that we have seen him most aggressive. He did again go after Bernie Sanders says medicare for all would be very tough to get their health care plans. He also went after sanders on guns. Lets take a listen to what he said in just the last hour. So theres rational background checks. Even our own parties we have disagreements. One of the guys running in this party voted for that five times against background checks. I dont quite get it. Reporter and so, chris, also one advantage that biden still appears to have, weve been talking since New Hampshire if hes been erosion in the establishment support. Well, today he was touting the endorsement of the Lieutenant Governor of nevada kate marshal. She introduced him. The campaign also announced the endorsement of anthony fox, the eighth obama cabinet member to endorse him. He was the former mayor of charlotte, South Carolina, that hes hoping South Carolina will be a springboard for him. So interesting about those questions from the audience, mike. Thanks solve. Ali, senator warren facing a lot of pressure, obviously. There were people who thought this fighter persona she had was preferable to the change she made recently. So what is she looking to do in the closing days before folks go to the caucus on saturday . Reporter i think the important thing here, chris, is Elizabeth Warren and her campaign arent framing nevada as court on die. They of course would love Something Better than what they had in iowa, but she said recently theyve built this campaign for the long haul. The thing you need to fuel an effort like that, at least up until super tuesday, or every tuesday in march, you need the money. We know shes raised about 6 million since the iowa caucus, the fundamental wail of think being her campaign. You have pete buttigieg, joe biden spending time off the trail. Of course Elizabeth Warren not fundraising in that conventional way, instead spending a lot of appeal, to get people to continue to donate. But i think largely in the way shes framing this from a messaging perspective is were seeing it happen along two tracks, the first warning the Democratic Party and voters not to get sidetracked by the faxalism that many remember in 2016, but were seeing her beginning to contrast herself a bit. When we ask about her other opponents, she usually damours and tries not to go to a contrast or attack, and others said they would hope she would begin going on offense, going into the fighter persona that we need so well, and as we all know, we have a debate stage coming up. We know what that did for Amy Klobuchar, and depending whos on it, which could happen, then all bets are off. I think everybody might want a moment at Michael Bloombergs expense. Let me ask you quickly. We know not only did she get a boost in newspaper newspaper, but Amy Klobuchar got a money coming in since that debate performance. With that shes able to buy ads. Is that where that money is going . Its going into ads, but shes not coming in with the 1,000 people that Elizabeth Warren has or the builtout operation that the biden and sanders campaigns, for instance, have in some of these later states, but klobuchars campaign is building as they fly on this one. Money is great, sustains an operation at this point. If your theory is stay in, wait for the field to winnow, which is the theyre to all of them want to build a collision. You have to have other candidates drop out. So Amy Klobuchar getting that 12 million lets her get on the air waves. Thats a time when, with all those states voting, she hopes to be in more than one state at once. So the extra money never hurts at a moment like this. The moment tunnel is something theyring looking for. Thanks to all of you. It gives us a lot to talk about. Ann geren, White House Correspondent for the new york post. And White House Correspondent for pbs newshour. I thought what he said about joe bidens losses in New Hampshire and iowa. The same thing six months ago, a year ago, and a New York Times oped summarized it this way. The frustration is compounded by the feeling were not asking all that much. Most democratic voters arent asking a lot of questions. Theyre just looking for the answer to a simple single will. Ann geren, are we any closer to an answer than that . Certainly joe biden is hoping that nevada will really sharpen the answer hes had all along, which is the guy he can beat trump baas hes a moderate democrat things that biden ha tried to point to as his strengths, and really fell short, disappointingly so for him. This is the first primary caucus state where the nonwhite vote will be a significant factor. Youve seen biden really, really playing up his strengths with africanAmerican Voters in nevada this week, certainly with hispanic voters, and having some success, at least it sounds that way, as his rallies, at his speeches, many of the lines he has used in iowa that kind of fell flat seem to be resonating with audiences of color in a way in nevada that he really hasnt been able to do before. It remains to be seen whether he can up his numbers significantly and better enough that he can make an argument going forward. Yeah, i guess the question is what becomes better enough. We wont know that, i dont think until late in the day on saturday. The other thing hanging over this, besides the whole electability question, is the guy not on the ballot, Michael Bloomberg, of course. We have seen how critical hes been by the number of attacks hes facing. I want to play what we heard over the weekend. We are going to end a corrupt political system in which billionaires buy elections. Anyone who defends bank discrimination, and then blames the victims is not someone who should be representing our party. So Elizabeth Warren going after him over redlining. Stopandfrisk is still out there. Questions about women who said he had sexist remarks, but i mean we just got an answer to a critical question, i think, from Josh Letterman, because there had been all this speculation, if he makes the debate stage, will he show up . Maybe you could make the argument that as much as the other candidates have a stake a being ability to he has not been seen by a wide swath to answer these questions. Right . Thats the frustration of many candidates. They think hes been able to run ads during those debates with wellcrafted messages. What were seeing in Bernie Sanders is a frontrunner in the Democratic Party, one that other candidates are starting to realize that he might be someone to dominate in the next couple elections. Can i stop you there . I want to bring in news in just the last hour, the thing that caught my eye, a press release by the nevada Democratic Party, on saturday with the big numbers, i think 18 thousands early voting, more than half of those were firsttime caucusgoers. That would suggest to me, not based on anything we have heard, that that could be a lot of young voters who we know tend to go towards Bernie Sanders. It will be fascinating to see where these new voters go, yamiche . Exactly. Even though theres a lots of talk about 1 2 in which will be joe bidens firewall, berne yes sanders is at 20 , so you need a march towards super tuesday where Bernie Sanders would win all three and go into South Carolina in second place. If youre wondering who can beat donald trump, youre already wondering who could lead you to whos beating the other candidates. But when you look at the plentiering, with Amy Klobuchar, pete be pete buttigieg, he will be able to likely march into super tuesday with momentum. Michael bloomberg will face a lot of questions, because he hasnt said im sorry for stock and frisk. When he said im sorry that it happened in those communities, he hasnt taken ownership and said im the person who designed it, im the person who allowed this to happen, i was at the helm. Thats really not what hes been saying. People are learning the nuances will hurt his campaign. We havent even talked about what these democrats are up again. And that drew i was this vote, this fear that hes a juggernaut. North wee seeing. And the campaign if the two states with highprofile that trump received more than 31,000 votes. And get things going against donald trump, right . That is the way the Trump Campaign it defines itself. No real opposition, had a very large republican turnout, and going into nevada, President Trump is going to spend this week in las vegas. He is raising money. Hes going to be raising a lot more of it tomorrow. And then sleeping at his trump hotel in las vegas. Hell be holding rallies in the western states that the campaign wrapping up with a big radiologically in nevada. That is an attempt to keep the spotlight on him, to try to steal a Little Thunder from the democrats this week, and really keep that juggernaut rolling. Thanks to both of you. A fascinating conversation. This wednesday, we will host the democratic debate live from las vegas. Lester holt, and more, and the nevada independentingall ralston. Will put remaining candidates to the test wednesday, 9 00 p. M. Eastern right here on msnbc. Diagnosed with the coronavirus landed in the u. S. Today. They traveled overnight in special isolation units on two 12hour flights, just feet from healthy passengers to bases in california. The plan was for evacuate uninfected americans early, but now were just learning that midevacuation japanese officials called to say actually 14 passengers had tested positive for the virus. U. S. Officials decided to go ahead anyway and put everyone on those flights. Roughly 3,000 passengers and crews still remain on the ship under quarantine until wentz, as well as americans who doesnt field comfortable. Heres how one describes his decision. The u. S. Offer was break this quarantine early, get into a bus with other people who he dont know now theyve been doing, get into a plane and fly back to the u. S. With those same people. Worldwide there are now more than 71,000 confirmed cases, but of the more than 1700 deaths, all but four were on mainland china, the epicenter of the outbreak. Thomas joins me now. Thank you for joining us. After the briefing today, or at the briefing today, Senior State Department and hhs Officials Say those passengers were actually on the buses going to the evacuation place when they got the call from the japanese government that those test results taken two to three days ago showed that 14 passengers had tested positive, even though, we should say, they appeared to be asymptomatic. What do you make of how this was handled . So we have concerns with both cruise ships than containing passengers. It seems the kwan teen are being done more for the benefits of the countries, such as japan, with the worry about the olympics, rather than the benefits of the passengers. Cases have spread on the ship. It doesnt seem to be reducing that risk, as you mentioned, some of the patients that were released or passengers that were released later, it proved that they were ineffected. On the other boat in cambodia, we also discovered after hundreds of passengers were released that theres an infected patient. These things happen in an outbreak, but it is very worrisome. I guess, you know, i listened to that guy, i was struck by him saying im going to get on a bus with people, i dont know what their status is, well be stuck in together. Well be stuck together on a plane. I have tries to pull myself in hi place, would you have stayed on the ship . You know, its hard to say. I think theres also other factors in the case of those passengers. Their hesitancy, i know, theyre almost done with the quarantine and the u. S. Government has informed them if they were evacuated they would be quarantined against. A lot of them are very anxious to get off the ship, and this may seem like a faster way. That said, these cases are spreading fast on the boat, i can certainly understand the position of both sides. According to the director general of the w. H. O. Chinese data appears to show a decline in new cases, but he says it has to be interpreted very cautiously, every scenario is still on the table. So what are you and other folks who are following there closely looking for in terms of either red flags or good signs . Well, i would say at the current moment the chances of containing this outbreak are not zero, but they are getting quite small. 71,000 cases is a huge number in china been and of course they are just Laboratory Confirmed case. The true number is probably significantly higher. Theres a concentration in hubei provinces, but theyre distributed in the other provinces as well. We find out how easily it spreads in hospitals and households, so those are hard to avoid. Were looking attage outbreak that cant be contained and were moving to mitigation. The map obviously heavily concentrated in china and a few other countries, what would you say to people who are worried in the United States, weve seen it what should be the left of concern here . People should be a relatively few number of cases on the United States, all of them are imported cases or so on an individual basis, its all the things that people have heard. Wash user hands. Cover your mouth when you cough. If you feel sick, stay home. On a community basis, we need to protect Health Workers. China has reported 1700 Health Workers have become ill. When you have that kind of high numbers, that means more stress among Health Workers, and also people avoid getting health care, which is a problem. We still have a way to say go. Thank you so much. We appreciate it. Pushing for attorney general barr to resign over what they say, quote, interference in the administration of justice. One of those alums joins mess next. What do you and your friends and colleagues who signed that her hope comes out of it . Whats your bestcase scenario . Well, the bestcase scenario is if mr. Barr would listen to us, come to his senses and resign. We dont expect that. Our real goal is to tell everybody in the department of justice today, that we are with you, that you are right, that you dont have to go along with this type of subversion of the rule of law, and that you are not alone. Not alone, and yet i wonder if youre talking to people inside doj and what it feels like we have sees retribution for people who have gone against this president , this administration. Some people cannot even afford financially too risk their reputation, their career, so whats it line in there . What are you hearing . Your description i think is very accurate. These are people who have bills, families, mortgages, just like everybody else, but they are also people who have devoted their lives to seeking justice. They care about it. They care about it deeply. I think what we saw last week is we saw four prosecutors risk their careers, and i think there are many, many other prosecutors who are going to do the right thing. They will take the heat, but we want them to know that theyre not alone, and that we will do everything we can to support them. There was an appearance on fox news by kelly anne conway. She was asked about the administrations action, and heres what she had to say. The president of the United States has not asked or directed his attorney general privately to do anything in any criminal matter. Number two, he works hands in glove with the attorney general, as we are all privileged to do, on any numbers of matters. Thats policy is different from criminal cases. The attorney general and the department of justice cover a lot of territory, chris, and we work very well with them. What do you make of what Kelley Anne Conway had to say . I would explain that mr. Barr is not the president s attorney general, he worse for the United States, he is to execute the law equally. No one is privileged in the law there is no such thing as the president having a role in directing criminal cases. Shes just simply wrong. Donald aier made it very strongly in this new oped beyond people who work and who are upset by what theyre seeing happening inside the doj. There has to be a public push, a public uprising, and the down side of that is we have seen Public Opinion poll after Public Opinion poll that have shown American People and American Voters disagree at time with the president s and his polls, and doesnt seem to have an impact. Is there a level of frustration about what actually can be accomplished . What can be fixed . Well, of course, we would all like to see these perversions of the department of justice stop, but at times you just have to say the truth, just have to stand up. Whether it does any good or not, whether the people are talking to will listen or not, sometimes you just have to say the truth and do the right thing. Patrick cotter, people should real it. For the first time were hearing from former Vice President joe biden what analysts have been saying for a while. The South Carolina primary where hes counting on strong black support, could make or break his troubled campaign. South carolina is is it, isnt it . I mean, you have to win it. I think you have to do really well in it. 60 of South Carolinas democrat voters are black, so tremaine lee sat down for a frank conversation in the new series called the race report. In charleston, South Carolina, i met with members of a group who meet up often to talk about family, faith and politics. Nearly all are black, college educated, in their early to mid 30s. Theres about 30 of them in all. These men and women arent necessarily on the same page when it comes to the democratic primary. Theres this idea that black voters is one big bloc and its biden, all you here is biden, but thats not necessarily the case within your friend group, right . I wouldnt say so. As a matter of fact, i probably hear his name less than a lot of the others. Which names do you hear . Previously it was harris, you would hear yang a lot. I cant pronounce it is it buttigieg . Yeah. And then bernie. This is 2020. Where are we headed . Its not the same world. Mobilization, pending war, impeachment, other things we have to take into consideration. Im not sure that a Bernie Sanders, who is as old as my mom, or Elizabeth Warren, or a joe biden, are the people who will take me into the next country that i want to live in. What issues are important for you, and what do you hope your candidate of choice will speak on . The issues that are important to me, one, are womens issues and mental health, particularly mental health. Thats the field that im in. I want to talk about student loans. I want to talk about health care. I want to talk about the future much the environment and there will be a world here when my daughter grows up. Reporter theyre visits historically black colleges and universities, joining black Congress Great gant for sunday church services, and spending millions on ads. When you talk about other groups, theres the mid western vote, working class vote, single mother vote, but i always hear its just the black vote. Why is that . Because we havent had the privilege or luxury, if you will, of being able to be as segmented. Weve already had to collectively put together our vote to make a real difference. A the lo of people dont look at africanamericans who are political astute. I dont think they realize how politically involved africanamericans are, how interested in politics we are. As times changes, were getting more and more active. I think its changing, and i dont think people have accepted that change yet. So fascinating. Probably not the conversation that the biden team wanted to hear. Would it be fair to say, at least from the folks you talk to, they havent rule him out, but havent rule him in, either. This is certainly not great news, especially after the dip in the polls. South carolina is his firewall. If he can bank on anything its his sport among the black folks, but if you peel back the onion and talking about what they hope to do to beat donald trump, this is creating a bit of a problem. Part of the problem, right, is we started out with the most diverse field in history for the democrats. Now whats on the debate stage is five people who are white, maybe sick if Michael Bloomberg gets in. We talked with castro, booker, harris and yang. We care most about policy. Are we excited about the idea of a kamala harris, of course, theyre excited. Who said just today, by the way, she would be pleased and privileged to be considered about Vice President. So its not just about the complexion, but so the fact that we now have a field of white folks is not necessarily going to depress the black vote. Not when youre dealing with the trump effect, right . Its thing to sigh will it depress the vote or excite folks . A lot of folks still say theres no one theyre excited about, but the so in our last minute, i have to ask you, does it become another New Hampshire in the sense of, a. , Voters Decide late, in some cases the last 24 hours, and b, could change their mind on the two debates coming up . Without question. If youre mountain biden camp, you they pragmatically, or Bernie Sanders camp, this is a cult, seahawk up of world and our politics. Two people familiar with brief thgz president got in his first two years in office say the president was not focussed on the most dangerous but the ones whose names he recognized. One former official telling nbc news he would say never heard of these people. What about Osama Bin Laden . And that was the only name he knew. Ken, this is fascinating. You report that a former cia official, douglas london, who led a unied targeting terrorists had, in fact, had a session with bin ladens son, but he wasnt high on the radar of people whose job it was to follow terrorists, right . Reporter thats right. That was Osama Bin Ladens youngest son. In 2015, the groups leader kind of unveiled him to the world in a video and called him a lion from the den of al qaeda. At that time they were growing concerned he was being groomed as a future leader. But he was only in his late 20s. And there and he was not high on the cias priority list. And the cia did not assess he was next in line for al qaedas succession. And i think you reported that his favorite channel, the president s favorite channel, fox news, gave a lot of attention to a released video of bin ladens wedding of f you can believe it or not, you cant make this stuff up. He mare that he had daughter of 9 11 hijacker, muhammad uta. And that was troubling for a lot of people. And thats around the time that donald trump was exorting the cia to review that, even though it was against their best judgment, they made it a priority and he was ultimately killed in an air strike in 2018. The u. S. Didnt confirm until last year and the first report he killed and look, no one is shedding a tear for him. He was a terrorist exorting attacks on the United States. The truth is this is an awesome power the president has and finite resources to go after and kill the worst terrorists. In this case the cia had not deemed him the worst terrorist. But trump wanted him dead. Trumps recent decision to target qassem sol mony. Is it because he knows more, reads more or is this a president who is still operating on the gut . From everything we are told, still does not really digest intelligence reports, written reports, and he doesnt pay much attention or he let his intelligence officials tell him. And this is different from a count counterterrorism strike. He was a general, an official in a government. That was a departure from past administrations. In terms of the battle against al qaeda, trump did greenlight a strike against a man very important. The man head of al qaeda in yemen. And thats good news. And that shows some of the cias priorities are being fulfilled. Ken delaney, i recommend the article to folks on nbc news. Com. And joe biden joins Nicolle Wallace live on deadline white house.
