Constitutions emollients clause. They did not legal standing to sue. This comes as it appears the president is starting to get payback for impeachment and other investigations into his conduct. There are reports that hes trying to push Lieutenant Colonel vindman, a National Security council aide that testified in the impeachment out of the white house. A source familiar with the situation tells nbc news that vindman who is a ukraine expert with the National Security council is not informed of change in the work status and the Washington Post and the New York Times report he could be told as soon as today that hes being reassigned to a job at the defense department. Earlier today, the president said publicly that vindmans future is up to the National Security council leadership. Im not happy with him. You think im supposed to be happy with him . Im not. Theyll make that decision. Theyll make a decision. Now, todays reports come one day after the president lashed at opponents including vindman in an acquittal celebration at the white house filled with vulgar language. During his public testimony last november, vindman had an Emotional Message for his father about whether he was afraid of speaking out. Dad, im sitting here today in the u. S. Capitol talking to our elected professionals is proof that you made the right decision 40 years ago to leave the soviet union, come here to the United States of america in search of a better life for our family. Do not worry. I will be fine for telling the truth. Do not worry. I will be fine for telling the truth. Lets start with nbcs Geoff Bennett telling the story. That is true. I think he comes down on the right side of the history but the president says that the decision of whether he is moved out is up to the National Security council. Pretty much everything that happens on the National Security council in this administration at least is up to the president. So what could come next for vindman and what is this sort of say about vindication and payback from the president . Reporter heres what we now. Lieutenant colonel Alexander Vindman on the job as i stand here and speak to you. I spoke to a person close to him this morning saying that as far as he knows theres no change to his work status, that he showed up at the white house today just like every day since testifying before the house. Also, told separately, vindman planned to leave at the end of the month. He is detailed to or assigned to the National Security council. So this notion that he could be transferred some three weeks early certainly is a sign that anyone who is less than fully loyal to President Trump, even coming to issues of National Security or election integrity, certainly the underlying case with the ukraine issue, less than fully loyal you will pay a price. Now, if vindman is retransferred he would likely im told go back to the department of defense and the defense secretary mark esper has talked about the potential for that. Here he is. Welcome back all of the Service Members, wherever they serve to any assignment given. I would refer you to the army for detail on that. As i said, we protect all of the persons, Service Members from retribution or anything like that. We have already addressed that in policy and other means. Reporter so heres the deal. When esper said we addressed that im told that the army has done and continues to do security reviews for vindman and his family. One point considered moving him an his family to a military base given the environment that he now finds himself in given the threats of President Trump. President trumps allies and members of congress to include Marcia Blackburn trying to i think raise the profile in conservative media circles attacking vindman on her twitter account. I have talked to current and former National Security officials all day trying to get a better handle on what is happening here and ive heard concern that the president will retaliate by way of firings and transfers and budget cuts and real anger really for john bolton, one person put it to me, monetizing the crisis with a book deal doing the lucrative speaking circuit while you have people like Lieutenant Colonel vindman, bill taylor, ambassador vinovich and others. The president made it clear when he took his what you might call a victory lap at the white house yesterday he intends to go after democrats and others who he said have conspired against him. Joining me is new mexico senator tom udall. Great to be with you. Lets forget the implications of what this means for the nation. We seem to be in payback time now. The president , this is not implicit, not how a mob would do it. The president has basically said hes going to do it. What does that look like . I think it looks very vindictive and mean and nasty against a professional military officer trying to serve this country and knows a lot about National Security so i think whats happening here is the president is going to clear out anybody in the white house that disagrees with him and surround himself with yes men and yes women. At this point, the president though he was acquitted sort of wants to talk about vindicated and exonerated and those kind of things. We know that after the mueller report, the president made the call to the president of ukraine. We now know that the president is painting this whole episode as a witch hunt, called crooked cops, said all sorts of things. Does this sort of president end up doing things that are more damaging than he did when he thought he was under investigation and facing impeachment . I think thats what a lot of us worry about and i think what the republicans should have been worrying about when they participated in this sham trial and what was going to be the result of a sham trial which he would call an acquittal and take the attitude under article ii to do whatever he wants. The hell with the congress. That seems to be where were headed and i thought the republicans would be a lot more worried about Something Like that. Mitt romney in his very emotional speech on the floor of the senate when he announced his decision, realized, he said that he is gong to bear the wrath of the president which is interesting because mitt romney is not a guy that the president can do too much about. He doesnt need the job. He sort of wins independently. But mitt romney turned out to be somebody who made a decision to be on the right of history this week. Give me your thoughts on that and the fact that the president did, in fact, on time decide to go after mitt romney. Sure. I think mitt is on the right side of history. I think republicans, at crucial points of our history, weighed in with their president s. Soechb republicans that voted on the Judiciary Committee in the house to tell president nixon we want you impeached and then Barry Goldwater and other Republican Leaders went to the white house and said, president nixon, you better resign. You dont have the votes. Thats the tradition that mitt romney is in and i think its a pretty good, strong tradition of standing up and being a profile in courage. Except the difference there is what was said to nixon to resign, you dont have the votes. The president bet correctly that he did have the votes this time around. So what does it matter . I mean this sort of in a larger sense, what does it matter that mitt romney made the right decision . What does that represent to you . I think its important that all of us that serve in public life are men and women of conscience and i really refreshing to me to see somebody on the other side of the aisle stand up as a malter of conscience and take a vote regardless of the consequences. Senator, thank you for joining me. I want to ask you to come back and talk about some environmental legislation that you introduced today. You bet. It is named after your father and i want people to look it up an if you dont mind id like to have you come back. That is great. It was his 100th birthday a week ago. Ill be back. Thats his father looking at. Stewart udall. President trumps 64minute celebration yesterday afternoon filled with statements exaggerated, misleading an down right untrue and while the president feels emboldened since acquittal, we want to take a moment to fact check some of the biggest falsehoods lies he told yesterday. Joining me is ruth marcus for the Washington Post. Shes also a msnbc contributor. Ruth, thank you for joining me. This is a tougher job than someone might think it is because there are lies about facts to correct and things he sort of says, but im going to start with one without as much meat to it. The president use add profanity i wont repeat on tv today but he said the russia probe was bs. He didnt say bs. Kind of interesting because hes still depending on the fact that some people believe that to be true, all bogus. Well, its so interesting that the president chose to bring that up yesterday because for him its all of a piece, all criticisms of him are equally and universally invalid. And in fact, as you know and as viewers understand, the russia probe wasnt bs. There were reasons to open the probe. There were questions about the trump campaigns meetings with and involvement with russians to get potential dirt on the opponent Hillary Clinton during the campaign and then there were as Robert Mueller reported a number of instances that might have been charged as obstruction of justice if it were not against a sitting president and leaving out in this recitation of what happened a number of people indicted and convicted in various aspects of this probe. So im not going to say the word but it wasnt the word that the president said it was. No. In fact, all convicted. Claim number two that we have chosen, ruth, donald trump claims medicare for all to cost more than the country could make in 30 years. Thats just a math question. That doesnt add up. The cost of the federal government would increase with medicare for all. Taxes would probably be implemented to offset that revenue. However, there would be costs that are otherwise paid for Health Care Including individuals, our copays the cost paid by the companies. Generally speaking, thats just a math error. Not an error. Bad math. Its bad math. Lets just be clear, though. The cost of medicare for all is an enormous cost and its in the multiple trillions of dollars. Nobody can agree on exactly how many trillions of dollars in addition. Youre completely right to point out that its offset against other costs but lets be serious. The president cant remember that nato allies dont owe us money for contributions to nato or that tariffs from china are not actually paid to us by china but paid by consumers so math errors are a pretty constant of the administration, as well. We definitely understand thats the realm in which he not forgiving new normal. All right. You bring up nato and want to bring up another one that the president brings up all the time and says europe and other nations not contributing to ukraine and he called on germany and france to put up money. I think our viewers need to know, u. S. Is largest provider of military assistance to ukraine. Eu provides much more money. 16. 4 billion, grants and loans to ukraine. This seems to be reverse engineered after the information of the phone call came out and the president was saying, what i was trying to do is get everybody else to do more about ukraine. Well, i think that actually if im not mistaken and im sure ill hear about it if i am but on the transcript that was perfect, not, that we all read the president did raise the question with president zelensky of whether the nato allies were contributing enough. So i think to the extent that this is a wrong fact that may have been stuck in his head as those facts tend to do for sometime now. Good to see you as always. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. Ill see you in New Hampshire in a couple of days. All eyes are in New Hampshire where next tuesday the states going to hold the primary. We are looking at relevance of New Hampshire in the wake of iowa caucus. A facebook mom turned to advice to help her son sick with the flu. After a rocky iowa caucus and neck and neck result that is left both senator Bernie Sanders and former south bend mayor Pete Buttigieg claiming victory theyre focused on the New Hampshire primary with hopes of a clean slate and some cleaner results. According to a new Boston Globe Suffolk University poll, theyre vying for the lead in New Hampshire, as well. Behind them senator warren with 13 . Former Vice President joe biden with 11 . Senator klobuchar with 6 . 4. 5 margin of error there. Tonight those five will be in man chest, New Hampshire, for the eighth democratic debate. Thats where we find our road warriors. Gentlemen, good to see you. Shaquille, you just had a conversation with Bernie Sanders. During the course of the last week, we have heard Bernie Sanders say that he won the first premps vote in iowa. And then might have won the whole thing. Its not been a decisive and notable victory for Pete Buttigieg but where does sanders stand on this now . What does he have to do in New Hampshire . Reporter thats right. He completely believe that is he won iowa. But they do also want to focus on New Hampshire where he feels like he is in a strong position here especially leading into tonights debate and something that you saw from senator sanders earlier today is took the fight against mayor buttigieg by name in a way he hasnt done before. He listed he was speaking at a politics and eggs series and lested headlines of mayor pete and different billionaires that donated to him, headline by headline and then ened by saying, mayor pete is still a nice guy. I asked sanders, he will be getting attention on the debate stage with the frontrunner position and leading in the average of polls and fighting for that first place in the latest polls that we have seen and i asked him if hes ready for the attention and attacks of other candidates on the debate stage tonight. Are you ready for the increased attention that you are going to continue to receive, especially tonight on the debate stage . Shaq, ive been ready my whole life. When you have my politics, when you take on every special interest in america, when you take on the political establishment, you know, i have been attacked for dozens of years. This is not terribly new to me. Reporter as far as iowa, we did ask if he plans to ask for a formal recanvass on monday and if they want to once Iowa Democratic party to go through and look at the results. He said he wont request a total recanvass but wants them to look at irregularities and reported by other outlets including nbc news. The campaign released a list of them last night and want them to go back to there with clear irregularities. Ali . Vaughn, youve been talking to the buttigieg campaign. Shaq just mentioned some of the comments that Bernie Sanders made about buttigieg this morning. What strikes me about it is in the course of a couple of sentences he uses the word billionaire several times. It is as if hes causing Democratic Caucus goers to believe that Pete Buttigieg opposed to steyer and bloomberg is a billionaire and a guy the billionaires are becoming and dovetails with Bernie Sanders as he said to shaq the lifelong attack on billionaires in general. Its an interesting strategy deciding that Pete Buttigieg is the face representing billionaires. Reporter in fact, Pete Buttigieg was on colbert last night and asked about the wine caves and cant donate more than you or me and only a couple thousand dollars to donate but thats where Bernie Sanders is trying to tie him to this idea that he is getting the donations from billionaires and last night on colbert Pete Buttigieg pushed back saying, look, you wont find a wine cave in south bend, indiana, going into what he suggested, that democrats no ed to focus on what it takes to beat donald trump and a purity toast that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren can live by and then takes the resources possible to win in november. We should note theres only currently a superpac backing buttigiegs bid and so from Pete Buttigiegs standpoint this is exactly what he wants to be where he wants to be right now heading into the debate right now and happy to go one on one with Bernie Sanders here because joe biden was the big question mark heading out of iowa to what extent to have worry about him and if Bernie Sanders is focusing on Pete Buttigieg, this is exact conversation he would like to have. Ali, in iowa, he was asking voters, suggesting to them they dont have to choose between revolutionary ways and status quo of another option and that is him and seeing in polling right now in New Hampshire you see Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders at the top of this poll. There is nowhere else that Pete Buttigieg wants to find himself right now because he needed to have a huge turnouts here in these first two states to make the case in nevada and South Carolina where he is polling in Single Digits that he is worthy of being involved this conversation. Joe bide season the one that wants to be able to make the case that he can win over independents and republicans but so far at least out of iowa its peetd buttigieg whos able to make that case right now. Mike memoli you have been with the campaign and in other campaigns. Joe biden said it was a punch in the gut what happened in iowa. He started to rearrange some staff and going in trailing, in fourth place going into New Hampshire. What is going on in the Biden Campaign . Reporter yeah, ali, so in the Campaign Shakeup genre i think what we are seeing today with the announcement of the Campaign Manager schultz that dunn taking on an expanded role in the campaign headquarters, this is just above the sort of cosmetic changes but far from wholesale cleaning house in terms of the campaign but an important signal from the campaign as you say in a really precarious moment for the candidacy of accountability for what happened here. Anita dunn with an expansive role in this campaign primarily in the debate prep arena and then looks like a potentially a slap on the wrist of greg schultz with the former Vice President since 2012. Hes been much of a nuts and bolts organizing and field expert and i think given what we saw in iowa with failures in the organization theres a recognition that he needs to maybe devote more time to that specific area of the campaign and allow for other voices to have a bigger role and the elevation of anita dunn as someone primarily involved in debate prep she i think is behind the more aggressive tone from the former Vice President. Just this week attacking Bernie Sanders as someone as a drag on the democratic tick, help donald trump make the argument that democrats are socialists. After going after Pete Buttigieg saying with all due respect, a mayor of a small town and it would be a risk to put somebody like a tht the head of the tick. They claim to last through South Carolina which is his firewall but they need to keep that support infusion coming from bigger and small donors to be able the mount the campaign you need on super tuesday and beyond. Thank you very much to all three of you. Coming up, if anyone has momentum in the 2020 race right now its President Trump thanks to an impeachment acquittal. President trumps former Navy Secretary whos forced out of the Administration Last year is crossing party lines and endorsing Mike Bloomberg for president. He opposed the president s intervention in the disciplining of a navy s. E. A. L. Accused of murder. Some people will say youre endorsing a democrat out of vengeance against the Trump Administration s. That true . Not at all. I came in as a grownup. I put my resignation paper in the pocket to speak truth and what happened happened. I took my stand. The president took his. It is all over. Big outs. Were done. This decision for the good of the country. Spencers the first trump political appointee to back a president s potential november opponent. Stakes are higher than ever for democrats to take on President Trump, between the botched iowa caucus and an impeachment trial that cleared the president of wrongdoing, the president is heading into the election season defiant, emboldened and with a boost of momentum. Now that one figure of the Democratic Party to tie for first place in the primary contest, when does the battle between the factions end and what is the path forward to defeating the president . Joining me now is danielle mody mills. Good to see you. A second conversation about this this year. You tweeted out something about how there is no im paraphrasing. This is not a time to look for a moderate candidate for democrats. You got to fight fire with fire. I guess my argument is fighting fire with fire not doing what donald trump does, and that is, hour he goes about it, motivates the base . Yeah. I called it inspiring earlier. You said its fearmongering. Fearmongering. Motivates them. Love or fear. People were in love with barack obama and why he had historic turnout. Donald trump uses fear. Why republicans lined up and chanting and doing the things. Is there a candidate right now that we believe can inspire people to action . Heres the thing. I believe that any of the democrats, right, can move people to action. But the thing that theyre not talking about, the thing theyre not conveying is just how dangerous another four years of an unchecked donald trump would be. That is fear. Meeting fire with fire. The fear of donald trump president for four years. Fear is what we have to use. Right . Because i dont care about people who say that i want a president that i can have a beer with. I want to have somebody that i feel like is my friend. I dont want a friend right now. I want a fighter, somebody to go toe to toe with donald trump and tell the American Public how dangerous and unchecked donald trump will be. In the last 24 hours, Bernie Sanders called Pete Buttigieg some kind of a billionaire. Little bit nonsensical. This whole bloomberg endorsement, spending tons of money and they are fear based ads about how he can take down donald trump. Its resonating with some people. I dont know that bloomberg qualifies as a woke af type of candidate but i think thats a no. I would it is interesting, right . Using the approach. What can the other candidates learn from that . Should Bernie Sanders not going after Pete Buttigieg . Bloomberg is using the money in a thoughtful way, using it in the media in the way that the other candidates cannot afford to do, over 200 million on ads and super bowl ads going for a Million Dollars for 25 seconds. I believe that people should be following in step with him and talking about how dangerous donald trump is and why theyre the person that can beat donald trump. This kind of tit for tat, i dont know why Bernie Sanders said that Pete Buttigieg is a billionaire. He is not. I dont want to misquote him. He was saying that he is backed by a lot of billionaires. I actually liked Pete Buttigiegs response if we are going to have this purity test, right, in the Democratic Party right now, when we clearly have a white supremacist in the white house that wont serve us and primaries are have you have debates and conversation and decide to choose the best candidate for the job. I thisnk this discussion we should be but after supertuesday i want us to talk about one thing which is getting donald trump out of the white house. Do you believe that will end . Do you believe we had this conversation earlier this week. Do you believe that will end . Do you think theres a Republican Democratic candidate to emerge who has the support . If its Bernie Sanders, people dont think he is a democrat. If its somebody else they say in 2016 Bernie Sanders didnt give Hillary Clinton the most full throated support he could have. Look. I believe that at some point and i believe it will happen after super tuesday, the American People will have to decide that donald trump has got to go. That the senate failed them and just to be clear donald trump is not exonerated. He was acquitted by a bunch of accomplices in his crimes so he was not exonerated, not but a free man. His entire administration and presidency will have an asterisk next to it as it deserves but the American People will have to decide that they are the last in the line of defense against donald trump and american fascism. Theyre going to be the ones to make the decision. So if its going to be Bernie Sanders, if its going to be warren, going to be buttigieg, going to be biden, we the people need to get behind that nominee. And get donald trump out. It is the only thing that we have to care about. Progressivism, moderation. We need to have that conversation another day. We are in dangerous times in a dangerous moment in our history and there are choice that is people have to make and pills people will have to swallow. Thank you for joining me again. The host of the democracyish podcast and way more fun to say woke af. Senator Elizabeth Warrens trying to bounce back after an iowa caucus showing appearing to come in third and new low polling with New Hampshire voters days before tuesdays primary there. The next steps could be clear tonight when she takes the debate stage in man chest we are six of top competitors. Joining me now from New Hampshire is political reporter ali vitale. Ali, what you know, we have seen a recalibration of the biden camp. Whats happening in the warren camp . Are there similar discussions . Reporter there is just a focus on whats ahead. Iowa very clearly in the rearview mirror, so much so asking her about iowa news of the day yesterday she kind of pushed it to the side. Listen to that exchange. Senator, is tom perez pouring fuel on the fire by asking for a recanvassing in iowa . I dont know. Im not focused on iowa now. Im focused on moving forward and whens happened here in New Hampshire and the 55 states and territories we are going to from i think its really important reporter ali, you are hearing her in that exchange talk about a unity message that we have heard as the closing pitch over the course of the last few weeks but behind the scenes the strategy of my sources to talk to me about is theyre in this for the delegates and go down the map as long as they can and the thinking being that Elizabeth Warren will build a coalition and one thing thats wrong with that, you can keep amassing delegates and same time you have to win at some point. But one thing thats striking to me is she overperformed what we thought she would in iowa, beat the former Vice President. Something strikes me in the conversation of Brian Williams last night. He said that the way you win in nascar is draft behind the lead car until youre ready to make a move for the top spot and something that Bernie Sanders was able to do for the waning weeks of 2019 while most of the field had the eyes trained on Elizabeth Warren and she is in the reverse spot where Bernie Sanders was sort of drafting behind that lead car and while the rest of the top of the field the other guys at top of the Field Training attacks by name on each other Elizabeth Warrens not in the conversation. That could be bad, knock her out of the conversation, it could be an opportunity for her to rebuild, regroup, stay on the ground here in New Hampshire, build a little momentum and make a play at the lead car. Ali, good the see you in New Hampshire in a couple days. On the trail with senator Elizabeth Warren in manchester, New Hampshire. She set up the next guest for me, California Democratic congresswoman katie porter. Representative porter, anybody who knows you, watched you in congress, seen you talk about issues knows why it seems like a logical fit that you would be working with Elizabeth Warren because you both like to dig in, tear apart, put numbers on, get details about policy. That has been Elizabeth Warrens lane for a long time but things started to cost her in the polls after she did something that i happen to think was very important, put a price on the medicare for all policy and people keep holding that against her, she was saying its too big. What does she have to do to convince people she is doing the long math on the things so voters have clear mideas . What i say on voters particularly to undecided voters is that the fact that Elizabeth Warren made all these plans, laid auout all of her ideas sho a deep respect for the American Public. A deep respect not only for those who are with her and champion her plans but also says to people who might be undecided, listen, heres some more information. Read this. What do you think . I want to get your feedback. So i commend her for having a plan and i found on the ground in iowa and headed to New Hampshire this weekend that voters respond well to the respect it shows to the american electorate and i think particularly at a time of so much concern of big money in politics, taking on corruption, somebody who shows that respect to really lay out the plans and invite conversation if i may, congresswoman, thats music to my ears. I like it, too. We have taken on this show when warren comes out with a plan, made graphics of it. Why is it not winning bigger numbers . Do you care about that . It is a big field still and i was on the grown with her. I saw the level of organizing that she did, the deep Community Support that shes built and she is reaching out across the country so not just organizing in iowa or New Hampshire or maybe iowa and New Hampshire, South Carolina and nevada but 30 states already. Building a campaign for the long haul. One of the Campaign Slogans is outlast, outwork, outorganize and i think how she is thinking of this, this is a long, tough road not just to the nomination but to build donald trump and building the organization and general rating the enthusism from the different kinds of voters and going to the events and one of the most striking things is diversity of folks on the ground that come out to support her in terms of age, race, occupation, across the board. Congresswoman one of these days i will have you back and talk about policy because thats what we enjoy talking about. Thank you for joining me. Up next, a heartbreaking example of how dangerous misinformation on the internet can be. A mother posts that a doctor prescribed the 4yearold son medication for the flu and she didnt give the medication to him and days later he died. Youre watching msnbc. Oh, i. I didnt know. A statement from the lawyer for Lieutenant ColonelAlexander Vindman. Its hard to report on this because this is what was predicted would happen after the end of the impeachment. There would be something called payback or revenge. But to have a soldier removed from the white house is chilling to a lot of people. What has happened here . Reporter certainly his lawyer has characterized this in all of these ways, as revenge, punishment and exacting a price on someone who served his country and spoke publicly only once and that was with a subpoena. And of course this is the kind of service that typically a president would hold up as an example of someone who is serving their country in uniform, an officer who has earned the purple heart who has been a part of the National SecurityCouncil Staff at the white house and now escorted off the premises because, as the statement from the attorney says, the president listened to those who were silent and compliant and is exacting some form of revenge here. The National Security council is the group that works adjacent to the white house and sometimes inside the building and does pull people from different parts of government, from the state department, from other agencies that have expertise from the department of defense. So as an acting member of the military, hes not out of a job, hes out of this position. He will, presumably, be redetailed to the department of defense or some other position. But what really stands out here is the timing. The president was asked about this today. He said he was not going to be making the decision that they, the National Security council would do so. And the president s words. The idea being that the president would not tolerate having someone as an advisor who had spoken out critically of him. Now, advisors often speak of the fact the president is able to have a staff that is supportive of his policies and his administration. This is different because youre talking about a commander and chief and an active duty officer from the army. The layers of this are so different. Certainly reassignments happen from time to time and we see others part of the witness pool, if you will, during the impeachment saga, who have left or been moved out of their positions. If you want to call that a Broader Campaign of people being pushed out, or in some instances, those individuals choosing to take themselves out, for example, marie yovanovitch, the ousted ambassador to ukraine choosing to end her Government Service after she had been removed, recalled from her position there. Bill taylor who replaced her as an ambassador to ukraine also leaving Government Service. Weve seen how one of the aids to the Vice President was going to be moved to another position. This is a moment where we can see in plain as day how a figure who became known to us through the ordeal of impeachment is out of his position at the white house. Were told escorted out today. Not out of a job but out of his role. And certainly hes been put through a lot of public scrutiny and his life opened up in a public way, which is not easy on any of the witness whose participate in these, sort of, national dramas. Lieutenant colonel vindman no longer part of the white house. He would have known, as people who testified knew, this is it the way things might go but not should go. Lieutenant colonel vindman did acknowledge there might be a price to pay. He invoked his father in telling the nation why he decided to testify. Lets listen to it.
