If they object to any potential conflicts of interest. Typically in a case like this one each parent would have their own legal counsel. But instead theyre being represented by the same defense team presenting a united legal front. Their attorneys also represent another family in this case. A judge is going to want to make sure theres no objections, no conflicts of interest with that. As youre aware, the celebrity couple is accused of funneling half a Million Dollars to william singer, who got their daughters allegedly into usc through a side door at the campus. Both parents have pleaded not guilty. Later next month also fellow Actress Felicity Huffman will appear in court. She has already pleaded guilty in her case. She could be sentenced to potentially prison time by a judge in september. Miguel almaguer in boston for us. We are all survivors in the pursuit of justice. That should not abate. That was one survivors plea in an emotional hearing in manhattan. 16 woman spoke in court describing graphic details of how registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein abused them. A u. S. District court judge allowed the criminal court case who died by suicide in his jail cell earlier this month to stay open. Until his accusers had the opportunity to speak. What they had to say was shocking. I was recruited at a very young age from maralago and entrapped in a world that i didnt understand, and ive been fighting that very world to this day, and i wont stop fighting. I will never be silenced until these people are brought to justice. I was searching for words but all i could say is please stop. But that just seemed to excite him more. He continued to rape me and when he was finished went to the shower. I pulled my shorts up and i ran as fast as i could back to my own villa, my feet bloody from the rocks. I cried myself to sleep that night. It makes me sick to my stomach that theres perpetrators out there that obviously helped him in many ways for a very long time and theyre still out there with no punishment. Joining me now is nbc correspondent stephanie gosk, who has been following this story closely. Stephanie, this is interesting because a case cannot be pursued against somebody who is dead but the prosecution has to actually go to court and ask that the case be dismissed and the judge used this as an opportunity to hear from these victims who were otherwise literally not going to be heard from. Thats right. In the court at least. The prosecution is really just a formality, going tie judge and saying lets drop this case. Hes dead. Inside the judge said im not dropping it now, im going to open up the doors to this courthouse to his accusers. And that hearing took place today. Altogether there were 23 accusers who issued statements. Some of them personally in court. Some identifying themselves. Some choosing not to. In fact, the majority of them chose to refer to themselves as jane does, reflective of the anxiety and fear and perhaps shame that some of these women still feel about what occurred. And it was interesting. You heard a number of different themes throughout these i guess you could call them testimony of a sort. One was they were very thankful for the opportunity to be there. There was also anger. They were angry that Jeffrey Epstein had the opportunity to take his own life so that they wouldnt get a chance to actually see him go through this trial in criminal court. And then there was also anger and frustration, and you heard some of it there, that some of his coconspirators have not faced charges. Weve heard a lot about Ghislaine Maxwell. Four of these accusers mentioned her specifically by name. And theyre looking for her to face charges as well. She has not, it should be said, ever been criminally charged and has denied the allegations. But shes been named by some. Almost all of them whove spoken publicly have referred to other people being involved. In other words, nobody has described this as just Jeffrey Epstein. Jeffrey epstein found me outside of my school, Jeffrey Epstein recruited me. And we know in the florida deal there were unnamed coconspirators. So where does your reporting lead you in terms of is there something under way . Is there going to be a step two to this . There certainly is an investigation that it is ongoing. That has come from the u. S. Attorney. That has come from the attorney general himself. They have said that theyre doing we also heard today from the attorneys for some of these victims, who said Gloria Allred specifically said im getting calls every single day at night, on weekends, on holidays, that they are pursuing this vigorously. David boyes, whos another one of the attorneys for some of these alleged victims, he said he thinks theres a very good case against Ghislaine Maxwell. A lot of pressure being put on prosecutors in the Southern District of new york to move that process forward in terms of charging some of these coconspirators. So the interesting part about this is these stories are all different. Theyre all individual peoples stories. Is there new material fundamentally that we learned from this testimony today and does it carry weight . In other words, we sort of tried to decide, is this testimony or not because it was in a court. Theres no case against anybody at the moment. Sure. In terms of that, the judge did say to lawyers and accusers be careful what you say here because this is going into a court record, this is something that could then be used in some kind of proceeding. A number of these women we know have actually spoken to prosecutors. Their lawyers told us that today. In terms of the investigation, there were no specific details that we hadnt heard just at least generally. Locations. We heard about the new mexico ranch. We heard about the island in the caribbean. We heard about the circumstances of some of this recruitment. A number of girls saying women now saying that when they were girls they came from unstable homes, that they were vulnerable, they were looking for support from adults, maybe financial support, maybe just a fatherly figure. It is, and this strikes me every time i hear these stories, and altogether strikes me just as so incredible that this web was as intricate, as farflung as it was to various locations. We know, ali, that theyve opened up an investigation in paris. You talk about new mexico. You talk about the u. S. Virgin islands. It really is a chilling picture its an operation. It wasnt just a person. It seemed to be an operation centered around the person. What a remarkable interesting story. Stephanie, thank you for your continued coverage. A difficult one to cover. Stephanie gosk. With me now is spencer covin. He represents three victims in the original criminal case against Jeffrey Epstein in florida more than a decade ago. Spencer, good to talk to you again. Lets get clearer on this. Thatll case it seems things were done that were contrary to the law and the victims interests and it seems it was enumerated in the law there were other people involved who have not currently been charged. That is absolutely correct and thank you, ali, for having me on again. One of the issues i think is imperative and ive advised my former clients as well to two other young ladies who entered into settlements many years ago, 12 years ago, who are now asking me to investigate further with respect to coconspirators, that you know, they chose not to talk up in new york for a reason and your reporter actually pointed out a very interesting issue and that is anything they say at that hearing is on the record. So any coconspirators that are later charged who are defending themselves may end up using some of the things that those young women said at that hearing. I was definitely very concerned on behalf of these girls. These coconspirators were specifically named, a few of them, in the nonprosecution agreement. And i would specifically point to two of the young women at the time that were named in our complaint, sarah kellen and mad yar ma madia marcin cova. They were working right alongside with Ghislaine Maxwell in florida to recruit young women in a local high school in palm beach. What does success look like for the people you represented or the many women who were in this court today or have expressed great satisfaction with the fact Jeffrey Epstein is not going to face justice the way they hoped he would . What does this look like . Does it look like the investigation continuing . Other people being charged . How does one get justice in this case . Well, thats the hope. And youre absolutely right. Justice has been farflung in this particular case. These young women were really cast aside i by the u. S. Attorneys office 12 years ago in favor of a rich and wealthy man who basically bribed his way into the system to get off easy. And now these young women want, because mr. Epstein is now passed, want justice from the other coconspirators. As you pointed out at the beginning of the show, you know, mr. Epstein wasnt doing this alone. He had other women that he had trained in essence to go out and get other young girls to bring to him. That is just as heinous and just as awful as what he was doing because these women were actually bringing other young girls to a known abuser. So justice to my clients and to my former clients would definitely be bringing all of these women to justice in front of the courts so they can face a jury ultimately. Spencer kuvin is an attorney representing three of Jeffrey Epsteins accusers. Breaking news. The department of Homeland Security is taking 155 million from fema to pay for detention space and asylum hearing locations along the u. S. Mexico border. This is happening in the middle of hurricane season. Nbc newss Julia Ainsley broke this exclusive story today. She joins me now. Julia, tell us more. This is in addition to 115 million that dhs is pulling from all around the agency to send to increase i. C. E. Detention beds so they can hold 50,000 immigrants, more than the 42,000 allotted by congress. But for that portion theyre only taking about 3 to 4 million from fema. Then you get into this other part of this document that weve just obtained. This went to the hill. This is a notification of reprogramming. It doesnt Mean Congress has to approve this. In fact, they dont want them to touch this. They just are notifying them that they are reprogramming in addition to that 116 million, 155 million just from fema to pay for these temporary locations for immigrants who are awaiting asylum hearings. In these places they would have a quick asylum hearing and then be sent back to mexico to wait further notice. I want to read you this quote because i think this really stands out. The dhs here is trying justify why its okay to pull b relief fund base is sufficient to support operational needs. I think thats something that will get a lot of attention because obviously fema is set up for catastrophic events and right now we have Tropical Storm dorian heading toward puerto rico. Could become a hurricane. And this administration has already been criticized so many times before for not having a proper response, really especially to puerto rico, when it goes through Severe Weather events there. Also i will say members of congress have weighed in on this. And why they are taking this funding specifically to build these hearing locations. They say that its not necessary, that you are only allowed to take this kind of emergency reprogramming step without congress signing off on it and voting to pass that if it is something that would somehow prevent the damage of life or property inside the United States. And they say they simply just havent made the case for that to try to build these new temporary hearing locations for a policy that the Trump Administration put in place in the first place, which is to send Asylum Seekers back to mexico and keep all of these asylum hearings on the southern border. The number of cases of lung disease possibly being linked to vaping keeps growing. Utahs Health Department said today it is now investigating more than 21 cases, more than four times the number that were reported as of last week. This comes days after Health Officials in illinois said that a person who had recently vaped and was hospitalized with severe respiratory illness had died. The centers for Disease Control said last week that at least 193 potential cases of lung disease linked to vaping were reported by 22 states between june 28th and august 20th. This comes as North Carolinas top prosecutor is expanding his efforts to stop eCigarette Companies from marketing to teenagers. Attorney general josh stein announced today that he will File Lawsuits against eight eCigarette Companies. The suits allege that the companies are aggressively targeting children and do not require appropriate age verification. Earlier this year stein became the first state attorney general to sue ecigarette giant juul, a accusing the company of designing marketing and selling ecigarettes to attract young people. He also accused juul of misrepresenting the potency and danger of the nicotine in its products. Juul has previously said its concerned about youth vaping and is working to reduce it. Josh stein joins me now. Hes the attorney general of North Carolina. Attorney general, good to see you again. Lets just talk about this for a second. I feel like people of a certain age, i. E. Mine, remember that Cigarette Companies got into a lot of trouble and had to pay a lot of money, specifically for marketing cigarettes to children as you we understood that if you target children you got customers for a long time and that they are more vulnerable than an adult body is to these damages. Does none of that come into play with ecigarettes . Is it the law just doesnt sort of govern that . It didnt evolve to understand that this was going to be a thing . Well, the settlement that was reached back in 1998 between the states and the major Tobacco Companies was called the master settlement agreement. And it dealt with traditional tobacco cigarettes. So there are limitations on marketing to kids. There are limitations on sales. And unfortunately, those rules do not automatically apply to vaping. And i think that the companies are trying to exploit this kind of gray area and be in the wild wild west and try to addict another generation of teenagers and thats absolutely unacceptable to me. So its very you mean psychologically all the work the Cigarette Companies did made it very clear to us how easy it is to addict kids to things. Ecigarette use by High School Students jumped according to the u. S. Sournlg general, jum frpd 11. 7 in 2017 to 20. 8 in 2018. Thats in one year. If you look at that kind of jump you can sort of see where this is going. What in your mind are the similarities to how the Cigarette Companies dealt with kids and how these eCigarette Companies are dealing with kids . Its an epidemic right now. The Surgeon General has said that. The fda commissioner has said that. In North Carolina this week, ali, its back to school week. And parents should be worrying about what kids their classes are taking what classes their kids are taking and they shouldnt be worried about the health risks theyre going to be exposed to by all the vaping that goes on at middle schools and high schools across the state. So what is similar is they use cartoons, they use flavors that appeal to kids. We know that flavoring is the number one reason why kids vape. And so there are flavors like french toast, bubble gum, cinnamon. Anything that would appeal to a kid. And they package it in a way that appeals to children. It looks like a juice box sometimes. Even with a straw in it. And then they market it on networks where children are. Snapchat and instagram. There was one ad from eon smokes, one of eight companies i sued today, in which the ad of their device, it looks like a usb port. Its similar to juul in that regard. And it says, mom, no, its a usb port. So they are absolutely signaling to children wow. This is what you should be doing. Appealing to the subversive nature of teenagers, which is how kids are. Its inexcusable, and thats why i want to put a stop to it. Attorney general, well stay on top of this with you. Thank you for joining me again. Josh stein is the attorney general of North Carolina. Ali, thank you. Coming up, breaking news. Purdue pharma is offering to settle the more than 2,000 lawsuits against the company for 10 to 12 billion dollars. Right now, when you buy one, you get a galaxy note10 free. Thats verizon. Purdue pharma and its owners the Sackler Family have just offered to settle the 2,000 lawsuits against the company for 10 to 12 billion. Youll recall Purdue Pharma is the maker of oxycontin an addictive pain reliever. The suits were brought by states, cities and counties that allege Purdue Pharma and the sacklers started and sustained the Opioid Crisis. The white houses counsel of economic advisers estimates the Opioid Crisiss cost hid 504 billion in 2015. That takes into account a lot of costs you have to take into account including hospital workers, First Responders, criminal justice officials, ambulance runs, productivity, help for parents of children or in this case children of parents who overdosed. Joining me is Laura Strickler who has the latest on the story. Tell us about this deal. At first blush that seems like a very, very big offer, 10 to 12 billion dollars, but when you start working through the math and those numbers that the c. E. A. Came out with, the Opioid Crisis is a lot more expensive than this. And something to keep in mind is the company Purdue Pharma over the years has earned 35 billion from the sale of oxycontin. You put that into perspective in terms of this 10 to 12 billiondollar deal. This is a potential deal. Nothing is set in stone at all. At this point. But as of friday the parties will Purdue Pharma itself, if the deal goes forward, will be declaring bankruptcy and will turn into whats called a Public Benefit trust where there will be trustees who will be appointed by the Bankruptcy Court and those trustees will then in turn choose a board of directors that will then run the company for up to ten years at least and the value of that company will be between 7 to 8 billion dollars for plaintiffs and then the Sackler Family that owns the company will provide an additional 3 billion at least at this point. So thats how you get from 7 or 8 billion to 10 to 12 billion. Thats right. Does Purdue Pharma become this new public trust . Yes. Purdue pharma will go away. It will declare bankruptcy. Again, if this goes through, it will declare bankruptcy and will become this Public Benefit trust, which is a unique the company would be using the tool of bankruptcy to create this new company that would then be run by independent people. The Sackler Family would no longer have any connection to the company. Laura, thank you. Laura strickler is an nbc news investigative journalist. We of course are going to stay on top of the story. Right now in fact. Because this all comes after a huge ruling in oklahoma where a judge ordered Johnson Johnson to pay 572 million for its role in the Opioid Epidemic. The state argued that the consumer giant Johnson Johnson and their subsidiaries created misleading Marketing Campaigns that overstated the effectiveness of opioid medications and downplayed their addictive nature. Heres some of what the Oklahoma Attorney general Michael Hunter had to say about the ruling. What we are expecting them to do and what the judge ordered them to do is to begin to take responsibility for the mess in oklahoma. And im asking the ceo of that company to get his checkbook out and write this check so that we can start again addressing the problems they created in our state. This case could have a big impact on the thousands of similar suits across state and local governments. Joining me now is joseph rice. Hes the colead counsel of that National Prescription opiate litigation. Joe, good to see you. Thank you for being here. Thank you for having me. Let me just ask a question. In oklahoma the case was made that Johnson Johnson started themmic. With Purdue Pharma the case is made they started the epidemic. Who started the epidemic . Theres not one place this epidemic started. This epidemic started i believe in the late 90s when the marketing of narcotic drugs was a tool used by the pharmacies to sell. And were the only country in the world that allows the marketing of narcotics. So when that started, people started listening to them. They went and spent money. They had detail. They tripled the size of their marketing budgets. Their market staff. They paid bonuses on the number of pills that got sold. That works through the pharmacy industry, to the distribution chain, to the distribution and dispensement chain. So theres involvement all the way from the first manufacturer that started it. Everybody that piled on. And everybody that saw this is a lot of money and were going to be part of it. Tell me how much of this is real because as we speak people will be tweeting me saying i really suffer from pain for which there is no other cure. Sometimes end of life cancer pain. Sometimes people who have had numerous surgeries or accidents. There was some benefit in figuring out new ways to manage pain. But then something happened. Then theres a campaign that began to say push this on everybody and if people start coming to you, doctors, and saying theyre feeling like they might be getting hooked on this that means they need more. Thats what happened generally is that yes, there are instances end of life, immediately after surgery, you that need some narcotic pain pills. But you dont need narcotic pain pills for a backache. And what happened is they created this concept of fifth vital sign and pain was another vital sign. If you pound pain when you examined a patient you had to treat that pain and you had to treat it aggressively. And then if somebody came back and they said, well, we need more, thats not addiction. Thats pseudo addiction. That means their pain is still there. So you have to give them more. And pseudoaddiction has largely been debunked as a thing. It was a figment of their imagination to start with. So what does numbers are big. 572 million for Johnson Johnson. Were talking about 10 to 12 youre missing the big point. 572 million in year one. Its not 572 million. We dont know what the ultimate cost will be. So that was my point. Because the cost of the Opioid Epidemic is huge. These are much bigger numbers than any of these Court Settlements can even come up with. Thats correct. If we look back in five years, because we have the science to deal with this, so we can look back in five years to say we fixed this, we nailed this, what will have to happen to get us there . This is an epidemic of opioid use. As part of that use it will be but weve got to stop the everyday prescribing of opioids for minor pain and for chronic pain. And when you go to the dentist and you have a wisdom tooth yeah, they give you an envelope sometimes. 30 days. You need two pills. Maybe you need three pills. If you need any. If youre 16, 17, you need aspirin or you need tylenol. You dont need a narcotic for every time theres a little pain. And weve got to stop the prescribing of these opioids. Money, the 572 million in this care, the money theyre talking to purdueb where does the money go and where should it go . Well, in the oklahoma case, which is what were focusing on, the judge, what he did is went through an abatement plan and said this is a public nuisance and now weve got to address the nuisance. In his order he goes through 10 or 12 items that need to be done based on the evidence in that case to address the nuisance. And he lists the costs as 9 evidence showed and he adds the numbers up. Thats where the 572 goes. Theoretically, what should happen is the money should come in and under a courtsupervised program the money will be used for those purposes. So much money for foster care, so much money for medically assisted treatment, so much money for Police Protection and n. A. S. Baby. Sought money will be directed which is the complaint people have about the tobacco case. When the tobacco case settled, the money went all through the legislative process. And that was where the decisions were made on how to use the money. And theres some disappointments in some states. Some states did a great job. States didnt do as much as people were hoping they would. Thats one of the reasons this litigation got started in opioids, is because the communities that are suffering at main street, and theyre having to make decisions between hiring another schoolteacher or hiring another Police Officer. They have to have help. So the abatement nuisance, you have to do it on main street. You have to do it on the corners and in the small towns and large towns. Joe, thank you for joining me. Well keep you posted on that story. Puerto rico has declared a state of emergency as Tropical Storm dorian makes its way across the caribbean. Dorian could be upgraded to a category 1 hurricane as it nears the island. The National Hurricane center says the storms current track has it passing near or south of puerto rico tomorrow night, which is why the island is both under a Tropical Storm warning and a hurricane watch. Dorians arrival comes as Many Puerto Ricans are still reeling from the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017. At a category 5 that storm was the deadliest Natural Disaster in u. S. History, killing nearly 3,000 people. Nbcs Morgan Chesky joins me now from san juan. Morgan . Reporter yeah, ali, they certainly know better here in this neighborhood in san juan. And you mentioned still recovering from Hurricane Maria. And were seeing very telltale sign of that here in this neighborhood, and what it is are those blue tarps that were handed out by fema nearly two years ago which in this neighborhood and all across san juan cover so many homes. The only protection a lot of people have from the elements. We had a chance to speak to the mayor of san juan today that said 10 of the population not just in san juan but all over the island still relying on those tarps for the shelter from the elements and as a result of that the cdc says that a lot of the people who live in those homes have already seen Adverse Health conditions as a result of that. All of that front and center here as dorian continues to churn its way toward this island. As you mentioned, the state of emergency has been declared. Schools shut down at lunch today, and the prices have been fixed on all those necessities people are rushing to buy. Water, fuel, ice. Everyone rushing to get those in place as dorian makes its way toward this direction. A lot of people taking matters into their own hands when it comes to a Community Response from the storm. Here in a few minutes were going to be tagging along with volunteers going door to door handing out flyers with the most important things people need to know. Emergency hotlines and where those shelters are located. A lot of folks not taking any chances here. Theyre going to go ahead and get whatever they can carry with them to these shelters ahead of that storm, which could still bring 50 to 60mileanhour winds even if it doesnt reach hurricane stat nuss this area. Now, as it stands right now, while puerto rico remains in that projected pathway of dorian, we dont believe its going to be a direct hit. And a lot of people breathing a sigh of relief, but from what weve encountered today certainly everyone crossing their fingers as this storm still looks to be pretty powerful especially in the vulnerable state that a lot of communities are in here in pleeko. Ali . All right, morgan. Make sure you and your team stay safe. And if we have more developments were going to come back to you. Well stay on top of this with you, Morgan Chesky in san juan. Tell your doctor if youve had hepatitis b, a liver or kidney transplant, other liver problems, hiv1, or other medical conditions, and all medicines you take including herbal supplements. Dont take mavyret with atazanavir or rifampin, or if youve had certain liver problems. Common side effects include headache and tiredness. With hep c behind me, i feel free. Fearless. And theres no looking back, because i am cured. Talk to your doctor about mavyret. A special police unit down in san antonio, texas is taking a different approach to Mental Illness. Its the focus of an nbc left field documentary called a different kind of forc force policing Mental Illness. Is there a crisis in the United States when it comes to Mental Health issues . Absolutely. People with Mental Illness are overrepresented in every aspect of the criminal Justice System. So i work in a specialized unit that only deadlines with people in a Mental Health crisis. Im in plain clothes. I drive an unmarked car. My weapon is concealed. And for the last nine years the only weapon ive used is my ability to communicate. Im not trash. No, of course not. You know that youre going to deal with someone in crisis that night. You know that someones going to need your help. All right. You can find that documentary on nbcnews. Com leftfield. With me now is the producer of that documentary, ed oh, as well as the Police Officer you just saw in that clip, officer james williams. Gentlemen, thank you for being with us. Ed, lets talk about this. You spent a year on this. Why . I think what i really wanted to impact, the intersection between Mental Illness and why people with Mental Illness keep coming into contact with the police. And what that really is is a failure of the Health Care System to recognize that Mental Illness, wheths its schizophrenia, bipolar, ptsd, is an illness just like cancer or breaking your leg. And i think as theres fewer and fewer resources for People Living with Mental Illness they come into contact with the police. And the police the criminal Justice System is one of the qulaefrnlth providers of health care for the mentally ill. And that is a huge problem because the police have a lot of different jobs. And also when, you know, the police operate theyre operating a lot of times from a place of fear. And so if you have schizophrenia, for example, and you cant comply with police orders, you might get shot. And statistics show that if you have a Mental Illness youre 16 times more likely to be shot and killed by the police in an encounter like that. So this is kind of a convergence of a lot of institutions that are failing people with Mental Illness. And i think thats why we want to look at it. Officer james williams, we are not at a place, as ed says, where we have Mental Health equivalence, where health care Mental Health is like cancer or a broken leg. So to the extent that people with Mental Illnesses are going to interact with police, you are you are part of an effort to say that doesnt have to end the wrong way and it doesnt have to get people into the criminal Justice System because they suffer from Mental Illness. Thats correct. Our goal is to take things low and slow. When were dealing with someone whos in a crisis we want to build that rapport with them, we want them to open us to us and taux to us. The way to do that is obviously respect our personal space, keep it low and slow and try to listen to what theyre telling us, try to understand what theyre trying to convey to us and take that information and figure out whats the best course of action. Does this person need to get tied into resources . Does this person need additional care . These are things we can determine once weve gathered all the information from talking to the person, letting them vent their concerns and us validating those concerns and getting them to appropriate care. What is the thing that you have learned from this that is most different from what you thought you were doing as a Police Officer or that you would be doing differently now with these people you wouldnt have done if you hadnt learned this . What ive found doing this type of work, it definitely is different from, lets say, you know someones committed a crime, you book them, you take them to jail. Here our objective is to try to keep people out of jail. Especially with Mental Illness, someone may be in a staft decompensation, they may be going through a crisis and may not be aware of whats going on in their surroundings. Someone that could have been tied into hallucinations. Our goal is to try to prevent something from happening before it does. And a lot of times when the police are called its usually gotten to a point where it may be out of someone elses control or even that individuals. So our goal is to step in and try to be that advocate for that person, try to tie them into resources before it potentially becomes criminal or someone hurst themselv hurts themselves or someone els potentially becomes criminal or someone gets hurt. We feel if we can do that, we can follow up with care, this person may have a better quality of life opposed to going to jail. Not necessarily getting the treatment they want. I have about a half a minute left. There has to be an infrastructure and support system for them. For officer williams, if there isnt a place for that person to seek treatment, what happens . Its a last resort. Institutions need peoples Mental Illness need to have access to services before they get to that point. Right. In other words, healthcare, people need access to healthcare. If you need medication for schizophrenia, this takes essentially six month or a year to kick in. These people dont have access to a doctor or therapist or psychologist, it wont get stabilized. You want Mental Health issues but someone has to pay for it and get you treatment. Its a complicated problem and youve done a lot of work on it. We appreciate it. Deutsche bank and capital one have until 4 00 p. M. Eastern time, a few minutes from now, to tell whether they have copies of the returns. They were asked about it during a hearing last week but refused to answer claiming contractual obligation prevented them from revealing the content of the documents. Trump is appealing a ruling that cleared the bank to hand over years of tax returns and his children to the committees. They claim they are overstepping but they say its necessary because of russian Money Laundering and foreign influence. Suzanne craig has won a Pulitzer Prize for her extensive reporting on Donald Trumps finances and business activities. What has happened here. The normal answers to a Bank Committee would strike a normal person who hasnt followed this all their life, to think, thats just a weird answer. It was. Not like they were asked to turn over the tax returns, asked whether they have them. They took a very broad view of the customer contract they have with the president saying, we cant disclose anything. About a half hour ago, Deutsche Bank responded saying their name is redacted but any reading of it would say theyve at least now said and a law form for the bank saying they are in possession of the tax returns. That has happened . It has in the last 30 minutes. Also, they have tax returns for family members. We dont know what years they have, just have the personal returns or which corporate returns they have, they have at least confirmed they have personal possession of the tax returns. Shocking but not shocking. They have made a court filing. You or me could not do that kind of business with a bank without providing adequate documentation and whether you think its right or not, generally banks want that. There was a friday hearing last week and one of the judges said, come on, were not asking for the returns but confirm basic information. Their legal view of the contracts they have, raised eyebrows even with the bench. It makes one wonder, as we have wondered for a long time, what the relationship was particularly with Deutsche Bank and donald trump to say they had such a contract but Deutsche Bank was lending money to trump and his organizations when other people wouldnt that makes you wonder. Theyre trying to get to other stuff they need documents for it . They are. This underscores to me, just today in the filing, just how protracted this is going to be. Lawyers on the other side are not willing to give an inch, to the point where short of a court order, theyre not even willing to say theyre in possession of the returns. I think we will see this slow legal march all the way up probably to the Supreme Court as people continue to fight for the returns. You are right. It will be protrakt. If this was all involved in saying, do you even have the tax returns, not to provide them, that gives you some sense of it. Thanks for your excellent excellent reporting, suzanne craig. A few moments ago, Actress Lori Loughlin and her husband left the courthouse. Do you think you can win this at trial . Anything to say . Any secondguesses about pleading not guilty .
