Night, but that was a packed arena. We could have sold ten of those arenas last night. It was quite a chant. And i felt a little bit badly about it. But i will say this. I did, and i started speaking very quickly. But it started up rather fast. Okay. But compare that to the tape of the actual rally from last night. Watch this. Obviously and importantly, omar has a history of launching vicious antisemitic screens. [ crowd chanting] that was about a 13second pause there to say the least. Those chants only echoing the president s tweet criticizing the four freshman congresswomen, quote, why dont they go back and help fix the totally broken and crimenested places from which they came. Thats what the president tweeted. Of course, this is about more than just words as we all know. It is about the actions that could follow as two of the four congresswomen targeted by this president underscored just today. Watch this. What i am scared for is the safety for people who share my identity. This is not just about threats to individual members of congress, but it is about creating a volatile environment in this country through violent rhetoric that puts anyone like ilhan, anyone who believes in the rights of all people in danger. All right. With that joining me now from the white house is nbc news hans nichols. Good to talk to you this afternoon. We obviously have this back and forth between aoc, alexandria ocasiocortez, ilhan omar and with the president. The president said that he disavowed the chants. He reiterated that. But then said the congresswomen should be more patriotic. Take us through what took place. It seems like the president s message shifted ever so slightly. The first time he said it, he was trying to put a little distance between himself and that chant. He didnt go so far as to reprimand or rebuke his supporters. Because hes very sympathetic to his crowd. These are people that love our country. I want them to keep loving our country. And i think the congresswomen, by the way, should be more positive than they are. Im not happy about when i hear a chant like that. And ive said that and ive said it very strongly. But i will tell you the congressmen and women also have a big obligation in this country and in every country, frankly. But they have a big obligation. And the obligation is to love your country. Theres such hatred. They have such hatred. So, the first time the president weighed in, it was just sort of the distancing from those comments without the criticism of the lawmakers. The second time is what you just saw. Heres the thing, theres a choice for the president s crowd. Either they got his message and we wont hear that chant, and thats a really easy one to adjudicate. Or there will be that chant and well see whether or not the president reprimands rebukes or tells them to stop. In a lot of ways this one is pretty easy to solve just what the president s intention is and how he plans to follow through on it. And were going to talk a little bit more about this later. But with regards to strategy here, it seems that we know very well from this president that he likes to test the waters when it comes to the things that he wants to put out when hes on the campaign trail, whether or not in the leading up to the midterms it was about the caravan heading north. It was the building of the wall in 2016 as we well know now that he wasnt necessarily a fan of talking about building the wall but then steve bannon told him, no, this is the way to go when it comes to immigration and drumming up your base. So the question now is, is he going to continue to say us against them when it comes to these four congresswomen . I suspect he will. I obviously dont know that for certain. What you see the president do in these rallies is do something they call the ear test, which is the president listens to what his crowd is saying. Hes tried out different slogans make America Great again or keep America Great again. It is clear the president wants to run against something. He wants to run against a foil. He thinks these four, the women of the apock lips. So i dont suspect well hear the president tamp down his criticism of those four lawmakers. Well see whether he met his rhetoric is whether or not he rebukes or reprimands his audience or whether or not the audience got the message from today and they wont be doing that send her back chant. Certainly a long road ahead. Thanks, hans. So as President Trump is shaping his 2020 attack tactics, his gop allies are standing behind him no matter what. Watch this. Any time you get into a crowd like that, youve got a lot of supporters. They are going to say what they want to say. From the places that he moved on in the speech, he never joined in on it. And you want to try to hold him accountable for what something in a big audience . I think thats unfair position. Isnt it racist though to say send her back . No. I dont think its racist to say. Was it racist to say love it or leave it . I dont think a somali refugee embracing trump would not have been asked to go back. If youre a racist, you want everybody from somalia to go back because theyre black or theyre muslim. Joining me now from capitol hill is nbc news kelly odonnell. The overarching question with all this is why wont these republicans disavow what the president said publicly. The entire house and dozens of senate seats, they are up for election come 2020. But many of those Senate Republicans that are running for reelection, they are considered safe. Their seats are not considered up for grabs. Why arent they coming out against the president . Because we also know that voters have a very short memory, as does the president. While hell issue a public rebuke on twitter, hell move on two weeks later and you might be golfing with him a week after that. Reporter well, there is a political price to be paid for republicans when the president is so popular among Republican Voters if they challenge him. And so they measure those moments of challenging him on various topics very carefully. So, even if theyre up for reelection and as you described it, some of them are from safe seats. Others are not. Theyre in swing states where there could be definitely a downside for this. You could draw a primary opponent. So thats part of their thinking. Clearly on this issue of send them back. That chant we heard, kevin mccarthy, the Top Republican in the house tried to make a distinction that the president did not join in. He described the president as quickly moving on. And that really wasnt the case. The president let the audience sort of take the moment, and he did not chide them. Ive been in a number of political rallies where the president would stop a heckler or a protest of some sort that they felt was inappropriate. Other times you igno are a screaming voice to simply drown it out or to talk over it. The president didnt do any of those things. He seems to have had some second thoughts today as he described being uncomfortable with it. Our viewers can decide for themselves in watching the clip if they thought he was uncomfortable. But looking at some of this reaction today, we were also able to hear from ilhan omar herself, who is one of the four women who are representing congress and have been the targets of a lot of this rhetoric. And leader mccarthy and other republicans continue to hit them hard on their ideological positions, their own past statements and ways they have drawn criticism. Heres ilhan omar talking about what senator graham said about Somali Refugees and whether or not a supporter among them would be treated differently. Today even graham defended his comments by saying that if i was wearing a maga hat, if there was a somali person wearing a maga hat, they would not be deported. But because i criticized the president i should be deported . I want to remind people that this is what this president and his supporters have turned our country that is supposed to be a country where we allow democratic debate and dissent to take place. So thats not exactly what Lindsay Graham said. However, that is a reasonable interpretation from her point of view showing again how words and positions have made things so raw and so divisive on capitol hill that they are really drawing some dividing lines. And its uncomfortable ground for everyone, and it could be potentially a dangerous ground in some cases when the rhetoric gets hot. Yasmin . Im getting word now that we are hearing the president whos been speaking about iran, as you well know, there has been a lot of back and forth over iran and a lot of rationing up tension. Lets take a listen to what the president has to say. Other nations to protect their ships as they go through the strait and to work with us in the future. Thank you very much. I thought you should know that. Im honored to be here with Prime Minister mark of the netherlands. Fantastic country. Credibly successful. So he seems to have moved on from speaking about iran. So i want to bring in now New York TimesWhite House Correspondent anne. I had gotten word that the president was making some comments on iran. As you well know, there has been a lot of rationing up of a lot of tension, especially about the ceasing of an oil tanker. We wanted to see if the president had anything to say about that. But he did move on pretty quickly from that. So lets circle back to the conversation the president has been having as of today, especially with these four freshmen congresswomen and the back and forth thats been going on there, especially following the chants from last night. Now the president is disavowing the chants from last night saying that he actually quickly started to speak to make sure the chants did not continue. I think we counted about a 13second or so pause. The thing is there was also a phrase at the rally the president was repeating as well. And that phrase, annie, was let them leave, which is somewhat similar to the phrase that the crowd was chanting last night as well. Lets take a listen to the president from last night, and then well talk. Tonight i have a suggestion for the hatefilled extremists who are constantly trying to tear our country down. They never have anything good to say. Thats why i say, hey, if they dont like it, let them leave, let them leave. [ cheers and applause ] theyre always telling us how to run it, how to do this. You know what . If they dont love it, tell them to leave it. The. Center back, let them leave, if they dont love it, tell them to leave it. Once again, this is another exampl example, annie of the president saying believe me, dont listen to what anyone else out there is saying, especially today saying that he didnt necessarily support the chants that the crowd was leveling last night. What do you make of all this . Reporter well, this is a classic trump saying i tried to cut it off, and we have video documentation that that is not the case about last night. But the chant was it was started by the crowd, and the latest reminder that when the president lights a match the way he did on sunday to stoke racial flames, this is the fire that he starts that his aides over the past few days have been trying to walk back a little bit of the if they dont like it here, go back to where you came from language. Theyve highlighted that they said and then they can come back. But what the crowd at the rally took was send her back. It wasnt, and then she can come back. So they took the most divisive piece of that message that he started on sunday, and it became this roar in a stadium. It was a sign of the danger of of the president s statements and what they can turn into. His walkback was interesting. He never shied away from walk her up the 2016 rallying cry. But this came from pushback inside his administration and from hearing from republican lawmakers on the hill saying you need to tamp this down, this is too much. So he was reacting to it wasnt playing quite as smoothly as he would have liked. And so hes now his language is trying to walk it back a little bit. I think hans made a great point that what well see, does he, from the stage next time, say no, no, no, i dont want to hear that if it starts again or will his supporters take the message that he doesnt want us to do that . Well see. I want to bring in hans nichols once again from the white house. Hes got some more information on what the president was just talking about. Reporter according to the president the u. S. S. Boxer shot down an iranian drone which came within a thousand yards of that ship. Now, i think this is a new incident the president just disclosed. I havent been monitoring all the news feeds coming in, but if iran indeed threatened a u. S. Warship with a drone, the u. S. Took what the president said is defensive action against that drone, that marks a major escalation go ahead, hans. Oh, sorry. That marks a major escalation in the relationships in the gulf and whats happening. We dont shoot drones down very frequently. So i think we need to figure out the specific incident the president was talking about and find out more. But the president decided to top off his remarks with something brandnew and disclose something that is quite serious. Yasmin . So heres the major question because as we well know, iran shot down a u. S. Drone that they claim was actually over iranian air space, and there was a lot of back and forth with regards to the intelligence as to where that drone was. So now the question is if the u. S. Shot down an iranian drone, where was that drone there. Ing . Why did they shoot it down . Do we have answers to any of these questions . Reporter we dont right now based on what the president disclosed. From the past u. S. Ships patrol in International Waters which is 12 miles off the coast of iran, and if the president says that that drone got to within a thousand yards of the u. S. Ship, that would suggest, again, suggest that this is an International Waters. But there is a lot more we need to figure out here because it does seem to be like a pretty big thing to disclose that after the president i guess it was, what, june 21st the president came very close to strikes against iran and then pulled it back the last minute. Theres been a lot of back and forth about the possibility of talking, about engaging in some sort of negotiations. It seems like the iranians dismissed that. But the president at the time indicated when he said when hes talking about that chuck todd interview saying, look, i pulled it back because no lives were thought. I thought, look, this could just be a couple rogue generallies. And he seemed to be giving the iranians wide berth. There was military action in i believe he said the persian gulf today. Well have to find out more about whats going on. But i think this marks a serious escalation. Hans, it seems like a marathon that will never end. That is for sure. We also know the foreign minister zarif has been quite vocal over the last couple days because he has been here in new york over the last couple of weeks meeting with other leaders as well. Lets bring people up to date, if you can, as to the type of troop presence that we currently have in the middle east because of the tensions in iran, the air Defense Systems that we have in place that the u. S. Has in place along with the missile Defense Systems that the u. S. Has in place. Reporter well, they added some Patriot Missile batteries. You of course have a huge operation in doa qatar which runs a lot of operations throughout the region. You have the fifth fleet which is based in bahrain. So you have a lot of naval assets that go in and out. They announced the Carrier Strike group would be heading towards those waters. Whats significant here is that there was actual action that was taking place, and an iranian drone, which can be either be just a surveillance drone, or it couldve had some sort of capabilities and it was shot out of the sky. So yesterday the pentagon indicated theyd be sending an additional 500 u. S. Troops to saudi arabia to help them with their defenses because every now and again, saudi arabia is under subject or under threat of missiles coming up from yemen controlled by the houthis. So all the back and forth on this prior to 24 hours ago when there were these reports of iran seizing a crew of some sort of International Oil fri gate, and the possibilities of talks, zarif had that interview with our own lester holt. How the pentagon responds and crucially what the iranians say. Remember in the past the president s been willing to say this is just a few rogue elements inside of iran. He doesnt have that authority here because it appears as though the crew of the u. S. S. Boxer acted defensively which means they saw a threat coming in and they thought they were well within their rights to shoot down that drone. When Something Like that happens, things can spiral out of control. My phones blowing up here. I dont know if this is sources getting back to me or im making errors on air, but im pretty certain that we have a serious situation on our hand. Im going to bet youre not making errors on air. Ive been on air with you quite a few times. But we are going to let you get to those sources, and then hopefully you will get back to us with any information you can share. Millionaire Hedge Fund ManagerJeffrey Epstein will remain in jail as he awaits his trial on charges he sexually abused and trafficked dozens of underage girls in the early 2000s. He appeared in federal court in new york this morning where a judge denied his request to remain on house arrest in his manhattan mansion. Prosecutors argued epstein posed a flight risk. They added that if epstein did not remain in custody, his victims could be vulnerable to further abuse and harassment by epstein or even his associates. Epstein faces up to 45 years in prison on charges that he abused dozens of underaged girls as young as 14 at his homes in new york and florida. He has plead not guilty. The news comes as a number of powerful figures reportedly bracing for impact as the result of the everunraveling epstein story. A wave of panic is rippling through manhattan, d. C. , palm beach, as his former friends and associates gossip about who might be ensnared in all of this. Joining me now to talk more about this is the author of that piece. Vanity fair special correspondent msnbc contributor gabe sherman. Thank you so much for joining us on this last minute. I appreciate it. Who, what, where . So who could feasibly be revealed . What could they be revealed doing with epstein, if you know . And where . And when would this all take place . Yeah. So really the crux of this is that there are thousands of pages of Court Documents that are set to be unsealed as part of a civil case that arose in this Jeffrey Epstein scandal. One of his victims is suing for defamation, claiming that Alan Dershowitz who accused her of lying is defaming her character. So all of these documents the judges decide is going to be unsealed. And in these documents is testimony of very rich and powerful people who attended these alleged sex parties that Jeffrey Epstein held. And the disclosure of these documents could ensnare dozens of people that we see in the newspaper every day. One of my sources referred to this as far bigger than the Harvey Weinstein scandal which of course dominated the headlines last year. But as i reported in vanity fair, Jeffrey Epstein was continuing to associate with because there are ways to get around the sex offender laws in this country which is why he had a major palatial residence. And did not register with the nypd. The lawyer for one of his victims held a press conference this week in manhattan. And he disclosed that while Jeffrey Epstein was serving his time in a florida county jail, he was still getting sexual favors from young women during his alleged arrest. So this is a man who clearly just, you know, brazenly violates the law and the prosecutor and the judge agreed that releasing him on bail would be a threat not only to the community but that he could flee given his vast wealth. So these people who could be connected to epstein, are these people that they are alleging couldve taken part in the actions in which epstein was involved in . Or just knew of the actions . No. The first, the former. So basically he had these wild, allegedly had these wild sex parties at his mansion in palm beach, in new york, on his island in the caribbean and was attended by alist people. For how long . For years going back to the late 1990s. And we just saw video surface. With donald trump. So this is a story again i think were at the beginning of the story. Theres not, you know, no end in sight. What type of people can you say . I mean, again, you dont want to name names because this is not public. Well, are we talking World Leaders . As the Court Document said, we are talking former Prime Minister, business leaders, political figures. Wow. Its again were just at the tip of the iceberg. And again at least with the epstein case, girls allegedly as young as 14 years of age. It is disgusting, heartbreaking, you cant think of a word to describe what has gone on here. Gabe, thank you so much for your excellent reporting. So we are taking a closer look at the issue of Human Trafficking in the United States and how in Jeffrey Epsteins ka isit was allegedly allowed to go on for so long, as gabe just talked about. Joining me now is carol, the executive director at epkat usa which is a Nonprofit Organization that works to end the Sexual Exploitation and trafficking of children. You see the Jeffrey Epstein children. You see the Harvey Weinstein headline. Who are the victims behind this . How do these women and these young girls in this situation, the weinstein situation, was women, young girls here. How did they fall prey . How do they fall into this lifestyle . Yeah. Thats a very good question that im sure that lots of viewers have a question about. Its, frankly, its easy to prey upon young and vulnerable kids, young and vulnerable girls, especially if you are a rich and powerful person and a young girl hears about you, meets you, and is dazzled. Theres a whole system, frankly, of sex trafficking in the United States where kids are drawn in. Theres a period of grooming. And when you see the interviews with the victims in this case, its a classic case of Sexual Exploitation and sex trafficking. Rich and powerful man meets a young girl, says nice things, gives compliments, buys a gift, and then eventually the girl thinks that this is the most wonderful thing thats ever happened to her. In her young mind, this is the best thing. Is there a system in place to protect these young women . Yeah. So, we do believe in the United States that we have a good system of protection. We have a Child Welfare system. We have a criminal Justice System. And yet they failed in this case. They have failed in a number of cases recently. Frankly, this is just the latest in what have been a number of scandals of Sexual Exploitations of teen girls because they are looking for somebody to love them, to take care of them. Our systems are falling down. Even the criminal Justice System in this case which looked the other way, gave him a slap on the wrist, a sentence that was abonibly minimal. Instead of being a system that was seeking justice for children, it was a system that was coddling and protecting the exploiter. Heres what i think is incredible is this number. 90 these are humans, everybody. These are women, these are children, these are kids. 99 billion a year industry in Human Trafficking. Yeah. How does that even happen . Theres a huge industry. There is a need for new meat to be fed into the industry. Im sorry to be put it that way, but thats what it is. There are exploiters who are seeking to buy and to groom and to incorporate them. And then there is the system that, in fact, looks the other way a lot of the times, especially if its a rich and powerful person who is involved. So, the other disturbing thing about all of this is that these young girls are being recruited from places that we all go every single day. Right . Churches, schools. I was just going to talk about this is one of the this is the most recent scandal that weve had. Of course, the Catholic Church has been implicated. Of course the entertainment industrywidely implicated. The sports systems widely implicated. The gymnastics. The kids who are exploited by their, abused by their coaches or by their doctor. Physician, larry nassar. Right. It happens over and over again. What i really the point i really want to make is that these same institutions that have permitted these bad things to happen do have a lot of good people in those institutions who need to be empowered and know that its okay to speak out. Its okay to point it out as a bad thing. When youre a small cog in this big wheel, you dont know what to say, you dont know what to do. But its really important because we cant depend on just the kids themselves being the ones who have to identify this. So, what needs to happen . What needs to change . How do these girls need to get protected so that they dont fall prey to situations like this . A lot of different things. The people in the institutions have to be willing to speak out and to use the Human Trafficking hotline number. But kids themselves need education. So, for example, we do work in new York City Schools to educate you to know what a recruitment conversation looks like because theyre young and naive and they dont know what thats whats happening, that thats the first stage of a recruitment conversation. That should be going on in schools across the country. And people need to write to their legislator, learn more, dont look away. Thats i think the most important thing. Dont look away. And its an incredibly important conversation that we need to continue to have. Its not something that needs to stop just because the epstein story eventually goes away because it will continue, especially when theres 99 billion behind it and so many young girls falling prey that deserve a future. That trafficking headline, by the way, 8883737888 if you think someone may be falling victim to that. All right, everybody, coming up, senator Elizabeth Warren vows to reign in the vampires of wall street. She is set to lay out her economic plan which goes right at special treatment for wall street if i remembers and financial deregulation. Giving you the power to actually lower your cost. Unfortunately, it cant do anything about that. Now that you know the truth. Are you in good hands . Were back with some break news from the white house. President trump moments ago announcing the u. S. Shooting down an iranian drone. Watch this. I want to apprise everyone of an incident in the strait of hormuz today involving u. S. S. Boxer and Navy Amphibious assault ship. The boxer took defensive action against an iranian drone which had closed into a very, very near distance approximately 1,000 yards, ignoring multiple calls to stand down, and was threatening the safety of the ship and the ships crew. The drone was immediately destroyed. All right. Lets go back to nbcs hans nicole whos has more information on this. What do you got, hans . Give it to me. Reporter the president announced something that we didnt know about, and that is today according to the president in the straits of hormuz, the youll sc u. S. S. Boxer took defense against iranian drone. That they had seized a foreign oil tanker. Now the u. S. S. Boxer in the region is part of a regular scheduled rotation. Just to let everyone know, the boxer is an Amphibious Assault ship. It has a belly full of marines. About 2,000 marines are on that. Its part of an overall Expeditionary Strike unit. Reuters actually had a correspondent on the boxer as it transited through the straits of hormuz. So we may be getting a more first hand account of this. But this to me marks a major escalation. Now heres what we dont know. We dont have confirmations from the iranians that this was their drone. We dont have confirmation on the iranians on what kind of drone it was, whether it was offensive or if it was just surveillance. We only have from the u. S. Side the location of the drone as it relates to the u. S. Ship, which is in within a thousand feet. And you have the president clearly invoking the doctrine of selfdefense. The question now becomes whats the response from iran and then whats the response from the u. S. Side . Because you remember the president was given a suite of options back in june on how to respond when a u. S. Drone was shot down. Remember the u. S. Claimed that drone was in International Air space. The iranians said that it entered into their air space. Well see whether or not any of those old war plans get dusted off and whether the president decides to escalate this because there has been a lot of talk about potential negotiations. But this could change that. Yasmin . Talk us through, hans, why the kind of drone is important to all of this. Reporter well, if it actually had offensive capabilities and i dont know what to extent the iranian drones, if it could actually take some sort of offensive action, that would have put the u. S. Crew into much more danger, and it wouldve been a much more aggressive and menacing posture. Even when it just comes down to surveillance, United States navy ships dont like to be surveilled. They dont like to be hit with radar. They dont like to be painted with radar as the expression goes. They see that as a precursor, as a prelude to some sort of physical attack. So if a drone got in, and, again, we dont know the size of the drone. Iran has some quite big drones. These arent off the shelf amazon products. They have some serious drones that can stay up in the air for some time. So we dont know what kind of drone it had, we dont know the capabilities and we also dont know who authorized this inside of iran. Remember the last time the president was willing and he also hinted that he knew something that he didnt want to talk about that the shooting of the drone back wasnt authorized by the highest levels of iranian command, that it was a rogue general. Which was rebuked by the iranians. Reporter and thats going to be the thing that theyre going to try to figure out through all kinds of intelligence just who mightve been responsible for this. The other thing we dont know is how far up the chain of command did that commander on the ship of the boxer, did he request permission, did it go all the way up to the secretary of defense . Remember, we have an acting secretary of defense. Its richard spencer, formerly secretary of the navy, because mark esper who is going to be president , secretary of defense, had his confirmation hearing yesterday, i believe, on capitol hill. So we dont know how far that order to go ahead and respond to it went or whether or not it was immediate. I suspect it was immediate. They felt the threat and they felt that was in the inherent doctrine of selfdefense to shoot down that drone. But that sort of action has consequences. And now we need to see where we are on the escalation ladder and what sort of avenues for talks there are to potentially get off that escalation ladder. Yasmin . All right, hans, stand by for us. I want to bring in pentagon correspondent courtney whos been waiting patiently. What more do you know . Reporter so we know that now from the pentagon and u. S. Central command that it was 10 00 local time when this happened. A drone, an unmanned aerial system approached the u. S. S. Boxer. The u. S. Maintains they were in International Waters at the time. And the u. S. Says that in fact it made some sort of a threatening approach towards the boxer, and thats why it was shot down. This is one of the problems, you know, i spent time in the region last month when a u. S. Drone was shot down, probably not far. We dont know exactly where this happened but not far from where this occurred with the boxer today. And one of the problems is how iran sees this region. They look at the strait of hormuz, which is a very narrow waterway as their territorial ways when in fact most of the International Community sees anything outside of 12 nautical miles from their coast as international waterways. Weve seen a number of u. S. Military ships going in and out of the strait of hormuz over the past several months even as these tensions with iran have been high. But there have not been these kinds of interactions. The u. S. Military does not mention who owned this drone. But as we heard from President Trump just earlier, he is saying that in fact it was an iranian drone. Hey, courtney, quickly, when making the decision to engage, do you have any idea what the process is in that leadup . Because as the president mentioned, he said that this iranian drone as he says was within a thousand yards of the u. S. S. Boxer and that there was multiple calls to safety. He wasnt specifically as to how many. But what is the process there . Reporter so, we frequently see iranian aircraft and more frequently iranian boats, what the u. S. Military calls these little fast attack craft that come within a close range and make often what could be considered dangerous moves around u. S. Military ships as theyre transiting through this region, particularly when they transit through the strait of hormuz. What we dont know because the military is very guarded about is the rules of engagement. So what that means is if in fact a ship, a fayaca small attack craft, how close they have to come or how many engagements there have to be by they have the authority to shoot it down. So we dont really know here exactly how high, whether this was something that went up to the acting secretary of defense or whether or not it wouldve gone to the white house. Or because of these tensions with iran, maybe there are some new rules of engagement where they have the authority, the commander of the ship or a fifth fleet has that authority to engage if they see something that could be threatening a u. S. Military vessel. Well, we are going to continue to monitor the situation. Obviously, courtney kube, hans nichols, we very much appreciate you guys on this. Lets talk 2020, everybody. Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren made a name for herself by taking on wall street. She is returning to that familiar ground as she seeks to capture the 2020 democratic president ial nomination. Warrens latest policy proposal is a plan designed to end what she calls, quote, legalized looting by the private equity firms that take over troubled companies. She is also calling for other changes to the financial industry that she says will benefit consumers. Warren is expected to tout the new plan and other policy proposals as well during a twoday Campaign Swing through iowa. Msnbcs Garrett Haake is joining us now from sioux city, iowa, where warren will hold a townhall meeting later tonight. So, garrett, good to talk to you on this. What does senator warren want to do, and how could it actually affect the private Equity Industry . Reporter yeah, yasmin. The whole idea here that warren is proposing is essentially to rightsize the entire finance industry starting in this plan with private equity. The plan has a couple of different planks. The first takes on private equity directly. What she wants to do is make these companies more accountable for the investments they make. That is to say if a private equity comes in a Company Comes in and buys, say, your local Grocery Store chain or your local newspaper, they cannot under warrens plan then just raid the company for parts, lay people off, saddle them with debt and then move on. She wants to, by law, make them more accountable for those investments that it will improve the functions of those companies in those communities. The second part of this is to bring back what she calls a 21st Century Glass stiegel act. To put back up the firewall at commercial banks and investment banks who sometimes make risky bets. She wants to make sure that american taxpayers arent essentially left holding the bag insuring those big banks when they are making bets in one side of the house and handling our checking and savings accounts on the other side of the house. Then the third part of this is to get essentially Companies Back to the basics of credit, to make it easier to cash a check, make sure it happens faster, even potentially using the Postal Service to do it. Its a big plan not one wall street will like, but thats not ever bothered Elizabeth Warren before, and i dont suspect it will trouble her. Joining me now is sheila, a staff writer at the new yorker who focuses on politics, wall street and finance, among other things. She is also the author of black edge inside information, dirty money, and the quest to bring down the most wanted man on wall street. What a title. She recently spent some time with warren for a profile published in the new yorker last month. One word off the top of your head having spent time with senator warren to describe her that stood out to you. Its a hard one. [ laughter ] i think at this point fearless is one word that comes to mind. She really does care about enraging large groups to what other candidates would be important donors. And i think its notable that her language in this particular policy piece shes just put out is very strong. You mentioned she described private equity is legalized looting. She describes the financial industry as sucking value out of the economy. She basically says that they dont give any value to the economy right now. And she thinks its bad that they have been given so many incentives through different policy proposals and that they are essentially hiring people away from other sectors where they could be doing more good. Here is the thing, though. She talks about the fact that she is a supporter of capitalism, and she mentioned that to you as well. Although she wants free markets, and she wants accountability, especially when you think about that wealth tax where she says she wants to tax people a certain amount over a 50 million, when theyre worth more than 50 million, they have more than 50 million wealth. So this plays right into this economic plan that shes put out there. And maybe she could feasibly be getting support from wall street, especially when shes up against someone like Bernie Sanders by saying i do support Something Like capitalism. There is a line she trots out. A lot that she says market without rules is the same as theft. Shes basically saying that wall street has been allowed to kind of operate in this lawless fashion. Now, even if you dont agree with some of her very harsh, some might even say extreme characterizations of this industry, cannot really argue with her Central Point which is the financial industry has moved away from its real core function in the economy. It is supposed to be helping channel capital and money people have to invest to productive use. It is supposed to help businesses grow, infrastructure whats happened is wall street and big banks have become financial speculators. Most of their profits come from bond trading or making bets on the treasury yield. Shes arguing it only generates compensation for wall street executives. That is demonstrably true. How you reorient it back towards a more productive role in the economy is obviously going to be debated. Heres what ben white wrote on wall street. He said, many bankers warn a republican who made the policies for years as a safer choice if the progressive wing wins out f it comes down to warren and sanders, a devout socialist, who makes feuds with bankers a centerpiece of his campaign, many of them would swallow hard and take Elizabeth Warren, which is fascinating. Do you think it would work in her favor if she talked more about her conservative past . If she talks about her trajectory from where she was and why she got here . I think that depends on what your theory in terms of her path to potentially winning the presidency is. Her campaigns theory is she will stand shoulder to shoulder with working families and shes not going to Pay Attention to the donor class and that may or may not work. Ear people feel y other people feel you need to make changes and shes clearly chosen a different path. She also mentioned this is not about President Trump, this is about the issues and she wants to maintain that and stick to the issues. Shes ticking up in the polls when it comes to issue but some argue this is the fight for the soul of the country, especially what has taken place over the weekend and his attack on the four freshmen congresswomen. I think people are worried can she beat trump . Is she being hard enough on trump . I know by focusing strongly on core economic concerns you will address other issues. Social issues are really Economic Issues so thats really been her focus. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Senator warrens plan was released on the same day the house approved a bill that would have raised the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade. The raise the wage act would raise the wage from 7. 20 an hour to 15 an hour by 2025. It would phase out the lower minimum wage paid to workers who receive tips. Joining us to talk about this is california congresswoman barbara lee. Thank you for joining us. Senator Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell said the senate will not take up this legislation. What does success look like to you here . First of all, i just have to say the current federal minimum wage of 7. 25, that is a poverty wage. People who made 7. 25 are making 15,000 a year. People are living on the edge. And what raising the minimum wage over the next six years will lift 1. 3 Million People out of poverty, 600,000 children out of poverty and actually give a raise to 33,000 workers. Let me tell you, we have not had an increase in the federal minimum wage in 12 years. So mitch mckochbl needs to understand that people in his district deserve a minimum wage. And im sure with our working men and women and labor unions and public on our side that the senate is going to be challenged and forced to take this up. But we have a lot of work to do. Of course, senator mcconnell really does not want to take up any bills and any policies that really help the working men and women of our country, nor is he working for the people. We know well at this point though that it is likely this measure would not pass a republicancontrolled senate. So what is the message here . The message is weve got to fight. Our Union Brothers and sisters started the fight for 15 many, many years ago. Many of us were on the picket lines with them. And at rallies. I have to commend them and thank them and salute them for getting us to where we are today. They have to do it and we have to do this with them for the senate to move. Let me mention, this is 33 million workers who will receive the wage, 33,000 i said but its 33 million workers. We have to understand these are 33 Million People in red states and blue states who will weigh in big time with the senate. We have to hope and be optimistic that were going insist the senate do their job, work for the people, make sure senator mcconnell understands his constituents also will benefit from this. Congressman barbara lee, thank you. Well be right back. Anyok u. Well be right back. [alarm beeping] {tires screeching} {truck honking} avo life doesnt give you many second chances. Donald trump spent five days telling four minority congresswomen to go back to where they came from. Hes repeatedly confirmed the racist attacks are part of his reelection strategy and he, quote, enjoys the case hes making against the four women of color. Last night his crowd repeated those racist messages back to him with the haunting chant of send her back. And obviously and importantly, omar has a history of launching vicious antisemitic screeds.
