Coverage of national and international news, including breaking stories. Jury to buy. It most certainly is and prosecutors will hammer one concept, follow the money. In these fraud trials, if you follow the money trail, that will lead you to the conclusion that you will finding when in the prosecutions mind is guilt. Theyll see readily Paul Manafort made exponentially bigger amounts. He set up the business and the shell companies. So its a very tough sell for the defense team to say its the lower level, the subordinate whos in position to take orders from the man above thats the true mastermind. Follow the money and that will lead you to the Promised Land for the prosecution. If i were rick gates, i would have taken a larger cut for myself, which he apparently did. Joining us now, ken dilanian. Ken, we were just speculating about this last night about when this might happen and it sounds like its a little quicker than we might have thought and that we are going to hear from gates
very soon . Reporter thats right, kasie. Ill just relate to you what happened in the courtroom. Cindy laporta, the accountant, was on The Stand Being Cross examined by the defense and manaforts lawyer, kevin downing, was asking her about very complicated tax matters and he said would it change your answer if you knew rick gates had embezzled billions of dollars from Paul Manafort. Then there was an objection from the prosecution and downing answered, well, mr. Gates has that evidence, hes up next and about 30 reporters scrambled out of the courtroom including you, thankfully. Reporter yes. Not as fast as i should have been but Cindy Laporta is still on the stand. Theres some redirect by the prosecution. Shes the accountant who acknowledged submitting information on manaforts taxes that she wasnt sure was accurate and turned out to be inaccurate and caused what prosecutors say is tax fraud. The same with a bank loan. She testified under grant of
they could have some evidence to the contrary. What might that look like . Well, gates was a partner, he was a protege of manafort. He clearly had a lot of authority within the firm an he was dealing personally with this accountant, Cindy Laporta and giving her instructions on how to perform certain tasks and account for things. Downing was just making the point that often the accountant is the last to know if there was fraud. The person giving the accountant the information has a lot of power to misrepresent what the numbers say. It looks like thats what their argument is going to be. But every single witness has been asked was Paul Manafort involved in this transaction, was he calling the shots and they all answered yes, including Cindy Laporta. She just said that mr. Manafort was deeply involved in all aspects of the finances and transactions. So it will be interesting to see what the defense can come up with here. Ken, before you run back into
the court house, can you give us a quick refresher on who rick gates is, what his background is, and how this might go on the stand for him. What are the stakes, how much preparation have prosecutors put him through . Reporter one can only imagine that he is incredibly well prepared because hes such an important witness. Rick gates was Paul Manaforts prote protege. He was working for manafort for many years, but he also, when manafort went to the Trump Campaign, rick gates went to the trmp c Trump Campaign as a Deputy Chairman and he stayed on after manafort left, so gates remained in trump world longer than manafort and he may have some information about meetings and things that happened that manafort doesnt. Were not going to hear about that at this trial, but hes been thoroughly debriefed by the fbi about that. Also, gates is not nearly as rich as manafort and it became clear that he was under crushing financial burden, because he was
indicted alongside Paul Manafort and at some point he decided to pack it in, plead guilty and tell what he knew. Even as he was negotiating a Plea Agreement with the fbi, he lied and has now been charged with that lie. He admitted to it. Prosecutors have a difficult task ahead of them to confront all that with gates before the jury and sort of build him up as a credible witness. All right, ken dilanian, thank you very much for your reporting. We will come back to you as this news develops, so just flag us and well bring you back. Seth, well come back to you in just a few minutes to talk about the mueller probe, which of course is what we are going to get to now, because manaforts Case Isnt The Only Legal Dilemma that the administration is grappling with. Donald trump jr. Says the discussion over the Trump Tower Meeting is, quote, just another distraction. That after his father contradicted his only story about that now infamous 2016 meeting. And he did it, of course, in a tweet. Quote, this was a meeting to get
information on an opponent, end quote, before adding his own legal analysis that it was, quote, totally legal. And finally saying with an sc exclamation point, i did not know about it. That does not quite mesh with what weve heard from the white house over the past year. In the case of don, he listened. I guess they talked about, as i see it they talked about adoption and some things. There was nothing as far as we know that would lead anyone to believe that there was anything except for discussion about adoption and the magnitsky act. The president didnt sign off on anything. He was coming back from the g20. The statement that was released on saturday was released by donald trump jr. Im sure in consultation with his lawyers. The president wasnt involved in that. He certainly didnt dictate, but like i said he weighed in and offered suggestion like any father would do. Like any father would do. Here is what trumps Legal Defense says now. Why did you deny President Trumps involvement . When did you learn that the Denial Wasnt True . Well, let me tell you two things on that one. As you know, george, i was in the case at that point, what, a couple of weeks and there was a lot of information that was gathering. As my colleague, rudy giuliani, said, i had Bad Information at that point. I made a mistake in my statement. A mistake. Lets start right now with Hallie Jackson and robert costa. He is also an msnbc political analyst. Hallie, i want to start with you from bedminster, where the president apparently pulled it in from a public appearance perspective early on today, but of course that hasnt kept this story from moving forward. What are the latest explanations from the white house . Its a lot of the falling on the sword that you heard from, for example, jay sekulow in that sound bite you just played saying my fault, my bad, my mistake, i take the blame, i was
miss informed. The bottom line is theres not a lot of ways to correct something the president is definitively saying in black and white. This was a meeting about getting Dirt On Hillary clinton. The president saying totally legal, right, it happens all the time. Well, we dont know if it is totally legal. It is illegal to get anything of value from a foreign entity so thats an open question. Ive spoken with a lot of republican and democratic strategists who say, no, no, oppo happens all the time. When it comes to foreign entities pushing on pulling that, thats a very different story. As far as the president s public statements, listen, hes got a lot of downtime on his schedule here in bedminster, aka the Surface Of The Sun here this week. He has dinner with supporters tonight at his golf club. This is a place where he feels much like maralago in the winter very comfortable. Hes supported by people he
knows, people who can come up to him without the interference of aides or gate keepers and have these conversations with him and perhaps get some of the validation that he might be looking for. So who knows. The reason why i bring this up, we saw those tweets from the president sunday. Who knows what other tweets we might see as the president has these conversations. He is doing work as well. Any president on vacation does work. You saw the iranian sanctions going back in place starting today be discussed by Top White House officials throughout the day as well as the state department. Mike pompeo talking about that last night. The president is having dinner tomorrow with Business Leaders as well and we expect to see him here and there, but no opportunities for the press pool to go in and ask questions of the president. This is a place that he has been extremely open to that too. Last year we were getting used to the summer in new jersey situation with what was at the time a firstyear president and he would go for 20, 30 minutes taking questions from people like bob costas colleague, phil
rucker, for example, and others who are part of the pool. Its unfortunate we dont have that opportunity today, but well see how the rest of the week shakes out. It seems like a Bill Shine Move if i were a betting person. Whats interesting is the way bill shine has come in, there is a lot of talk that hes working on the lighting. I think its a bit of a broader strategy as well of trying to focus different days on different issues, right . So, for example, on a day when you might be talking about the iranian sanctions, make sure that the focus is on that. I think you will see more of a Strategic Communications plan. Although, im old enough to remember when Anthony Scaramucci wanted to do that too. Bob costa, it seems as though the last round of tweets may have been sparked by a story
subpoena fight that could last for months or whether they just sit down and answer a narrow set of questions. Right, interesting. That is it does seem to be something where this president has been, as you point out, pushing very hard for this but potentially risks more and more legal jeopardy. You also write in this report, quote, the president more than ever is channeling his frustration and fear into a ravenous grievance of infective and turning out false statements with greater frequency and attacking his enemies with intensifying fury. We both cover this administration and capitol hill every day. Sometimes in the churn of the news cycle, it can be difficult to pull out and see the big picture. As youve covered this president over the course of the last year, does it seem like theres a Material Change in kind of his overall mood, approach, his level of intensity and fury thats related to this investigation or are we simply seeing kind of the ride weve all been on that is the trump
presidency continue as it always has been . Your right, kasie, in that weve seen this rage, this unhappiness before about the mueller investigation. The president has long called it a cloud. What were detecting in our reporting is an escalation because of the timing. Were months ahead of the midterm elections, were weeks, if not days ahead of a decision on a sitdown interview with robert mueller. The investigation continues. A report is on the horizon about the president s possible conduct and maybe even obstruction of justice in how hes handled different situations over the past year. You have grievance about the media, grievance about his political enemies. Its all becoming a political storm that is leading the president to hit three rallies in the last week pledging to campaign six to seven days a week ahead of the midterm elections. Robert costa in washington, Hallie Jackson with the president in new jersey, thanks so much for your time today, really appreciate it. Despite the shifting story line, President Trumps legal team maintains that the Trump Tower Meeting was, quote, totally legal. Well, the question is how would it be illegal . The real question here is would a meeting of that nature constitute a violation, the meeting itself constitute a violation of the law . The question is what law, statute, rule or regulation has been violated, and nobody has pointed to one. Back with me is former federal prosecutor seth waxman. Seth, can you answer that question . Is it what are the laws around this . Sure. There are several. Weve talked about a little bit this idea of Foreign Campaign contributions where if a Foreign National gives anything of value to someone, a campaign, that can be a crime. On the other side if the person accepts or even solicits that kind of contribution, that can be a crime. So don junior, when he says he loves it with regards to the Dirt On Hillary, that alone can be a crime, full stop. Bribery, which is a quid pro o
quo. If anything of value was given for the promise of future Government Action like reducing sanctions, than bribery. Or the most powerful weapon federal prosecutors have, rico. So theres a whole series of charges out there. When the lawyers or mr. Trump say we did this but its not illegal, that is a big mistake. Translate rico for our viewers . Thats whats used to go after the mob, theyre running a Gamble Operation in nevada over here and prostitution in new jersey, there wasnt a law that captured all of that so the congress crafted rico. You have things going on in russia over here, Cohen Material over here, im speculating a bit, but bribery is a Predicate Offense to rico. Youre looking at 15, 20 and 30 years offenses as opposed to Campaign Finance law which is 1 or 2 or 5year offenses and
those arent the offenses to flip criminal conspiracy, especially if its the son or soninlaw. So if the russian people call with dirt on your opponent, call the fbi. Yes. Seth waxman, thanks for your time today, really appreciate it. After weeks of scathing criticism that Social Media Giants like facebook arent doing enough to separate whats fact from whats fake, these platforms are now responding. Tech giants including facebook, apple and spotify are removing content from infowars founder, alex jones. He gained notoriety for peddling conspiracy theories, including the false claim that the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary was staged by actors. And now youtube is the latest platform to shut down his main account. A spokesperson tells nbc news, when users violate these policies repeatedly, like our policies against hate, speech or harassment or our terms prohibiting sir come vengs of
our enforcement measures, we terminate their accounts. Facebook shut down four pages belonging to jones, accusing it of glorifying violence and using dehumanizing language to describe people who are transgender, muslim and immigrants. Joining me now with the latest is jo ling kent. Jo, its great to see you. I think the question that we all have here, these policies against hate speech on these platforms have been in place in theory for quite some time. Why all of a sudden do they apply . Theres been a lot of Public Pressure and outcry against whats been happening and spreading on these Social Media Platforms. For so long they were a place youd friend your mom or get to know someone or a really safe space. Thats really changed over the past couple of years with the evidence that there has been tampering by the russians on facebook and other Social Media Platforms. Theres been the use of trolling by russia as well. So those sort of nefarious acts
have really changed the course of the conversation as it relates to social media. I think we may be seeing some sort of Tipping Point or at least a Turning Point when it comes to Social Media Platforms being used by anyone to say anything. Theres also been Public Pressure from the sandy hook families and families of the victims of the las vegas massacre. So its been a confluence of issues here from Public Policy to personal campaigns. I saw your reporting earlier with katy tur that apple hasnt necessarily as far as it had seemed that they had gone in removing infowars . Yeah. So apple has removed the podcast, the library of podcasts from alex jones and infowars and thats a lot of episodes so theres something to be said for that. But they have not removed the official app for infowars and they have not done so from the
google play store as well. So apple and google have not completely removed alex jones ability to reach a lot of people, millions of people. By shutting down youtube and those channels, hes losing about 2. 4 million subscribers here, so it is a step in one direction. But they have to cite their specific Community Standards and their policies, as you read earlier, because a lot of people are going to push back at this policy and claim that these companies are actually acting in a biased way. Jo ling kent, thank you as always for your reporting on this topic. Thanks so much. Coming up, facebook thinks having your name, email, pictures and contacts isnt enough. They now reportedly want access to whats in your wallet. Why the Social Media Giant is looking to get into the banking business, especially in light of its record or lack thereof on privacy protection. the apparent goal, to allow users to check their accounts, get fraud alerts and even contact their banks Customer Service departments all through the messenger app. Not surprisingly, at least one bank is reportedly concerned about privacy. For more on how this would work, im joined by the Wall Street Journals andrea maria andriotis. What is facebooks explanation here . They said a recent Wall Street Journal story implies incorrectly that we are actively asking Financial Services companies for financial transaction data. This is not true, adding we dont use purchase data from banks or Credit Card Companies for ads. What is the distinction . So facebook over the past year has been speaking with major banks about getting more detailed Financial Information on their customers, which includes things like Car Transactions and Checking Account balances. As our story has stated, this
does not have to do with ads. What the goal here is, is to get more information on customers in order to be able to entice facebook users to spend more time on the platform. So essentially they want you to spend the chunk of time that you spend in your day dealing with your own Bank Accounts looking for that information, they want you to go through facebook to do that instead. Correct. With the inquiries facebook has been making to large banks with regard to Checking Account balances, the idea that they would be potentially able to show facebook users their Checking Account balance in realtime, obviously not a Service Currently available, but something that would keep users potentially on the platform longer than it currently does. So why should why should we trust facebook with this information . I mean they clearly there have been several instances in recent years that have given a lot of users pause about the protection of their personal
data when it is used on this platform. It seems that there may be people who would have concerns about letting facebook giving them the keys, basically, to their Bank Accounts. Well, there certainly is concern and that is also why this seems so newsworthy, because at a time when privacy is such a big topic and you have facebook having conversations with banks asking for detailed data, it has come to the point where there is concern among banks about the privacy of that data, how would that data be used. So this has been part of the conversations that facebook has engaged in with the banks. Annamaria andriotis, thank you for your time today, i appreciate it. Thank you. In his last public appearance before retreating to his summer home in new jersey, President Trump on saturday made a Campaign Stop in central ohio ahead of tomorrows special election. But before taking off for ohio, he sent out a latenight tweet
insulting not one, but two men of color, including one of the best basketball players of all time. The president tweeted, quote, lebron james was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, don lemon. He made lebron look smart, which isnt easy to. I like mike. Mike, of course, is Michael Jordan. Jordan came to lebrons Defense Saying, quote, i support l. J. Hes doing an amazing job for his community. First Lady Melania Trump also came to his Defense Saying it looks like lebron james is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation. For more on all of this, i am joined by Gabrielle Bruni and michael steele. Michael, i want to start with you except that i dont really know where to start. There is no place to start. This is a favorite son of ohio. This is not a situation where lebron is out there making a political statement of his own volition. He is out there promoting a school for underprivileged children in his home city. Hes made a commitment of 41
million to this community and helping these kids. I would daresay more than weve ever seen come close from the president in this area, in this space. So to even enter this space the way the president did is insulting in that sense. But then to sort of talk about yet again when it comes to an africanamerican athlete or in the case of don lemon, someone who is on National Television as somehow being less intelligent and stupid, further speaks to how the black community has come to view this president , as someone who looks down on us and who has an attitude about us that is nothing short of racist. And so the fact that melania and others have been trying to walk away from that or take a different sidestep is nice, but the commander in chief, the president of the United States, is the one whos doing the tweets and thats the one that sticks. Hes the one with the power. Hes the one with the power. Gabrielle, you wrote for esquire about the president s attacks on lebron and you say that theres a reason that he likes mike but takes shots at lebron james. What do you mean by that . Historically Michael Jordan has generally belonged to a camp of athletes that tends to promote his sneakers and Play The Game and stay quiet on politics. And lebron is breaking with that tradition in a big way. He has been very involved with black lives matter. He said that the killing of Trayvon Martin was a lifechanging event for him. So when trump is saying he likes mike, hes saying i like my black athletes to smile and play and be quiet. And perform essentially. Michael steele, what do you think . I think shes absolutely right. I thought it, she had it. Thats exactly what you have here. It is almost as if i like my black athletes when they stay in their place. And the fact that you have a
number of a growing number led by individuals like lebron coming out and filling the space, the public space, they dont see it so much as political activism, they see it as articulating deeprooted concerns within the black community and responding to the White Community through the president s auspices in a way that says, no, this far, no further. This is the ground were staking, these things matter to us. For someone like lebron, hes putting his money where his mouth is every single day. Hes making a micommitment to t community in a way that should be celebrated by the president , not made fun of or just ignored. A very longterm one, in fact, with this school. I want to play sort of the root of all this. To be clear, lebron james, as gabrielle has pointed out, has voiced political opinions in a way other athletes have chosen not to but he was doing an interview on cnn about his i promise school. Here is a bit of his
conversation with don lemon. What i notice over the last few months, that shehes kind o used sport to kind of divide us. Thats something that i cant relate to. What would you say to the president if he was sitting right here . I would never sit across from him. You would never. You dont want to talk to him . No. In another part of that interview into, gabrielle, lebron james talked about how he always felt that sports were something that brought him together that crossed racial lines, that was a way potentially to build bridges. Thats how he developed deep relationships for the first time with white people. It does seem remarkable that this president is taking what Bridge Building can exist Inside Sports and turning it into something completely different. I think the president recognizes that thats a threat to him, because if snl is making fun of trump, maybe a trump supporter wont find that funny and change the channel. But with sports, you cant deny their talent. People who love trump, people
who hate trump love sports. So these athletes have a really powerful platform. I think thats part of the reason why the president seems so intent on embarrassing them and trying to silence them. Michael i was going to say that clip you played from the show, thats the reason why trump sent out that tweet. He took that clip, that portion of that conversation as a personal affront to him, particularly when lebron said, no, i wouldnt sit down with him. Lebron is just being authentic saying im not going to sit here and pretend, hes being honest about that and the president did not like that honesty. Whats your sense, the president clearly decided the way he was approaching the nfl question with the anthem and kneeling was a political winner for him. He doubled down over and over and over. Were anticipating he might do it again this football season. Is this with lebron james something that ultimately is going to light the president s base up the way that did, do you think . No, i dont think so. You know what the difference between the Basketball Profession Industry and the Football Profession Industry . Its the ownership. The ownership got behind trump
and pretty much capitulated to his particular desires that, you know, imposed on the players in the nfl what the president thought was patriotism. In the nba, the owners have a very different perspective. They allow their players the flexibility to be citizens and to be members of the communities from which they come and to respond to big and small questions of the day and generally have backed them up. And i think that you wont see the same level of response from the Ownership Siding with trump the way you saw that with the nfl, which is why the nfl has pretty much been twisting itself in knots, was torn between appeasing this president and keeping his constituents who are a big part of their fan base in place, while also recognizing that its potentially chipping away at that fan base. Gabrielle bruni and michael steele, thank you both. Really appreciate it. Coming up, whats old is new

Proves that it can be trusted after President Trump pulled the u. S. Out of the deal in may. The sanctions go into effect just after midnight tonight. They include buying or acquiring u. S. Dollars and trading in gold and other precious metals. National security advisor john bolton had this to say about the sanctions on fox news. Our policy is not regime change, but we want to put unprecedented pressure on the government of iran to change its behavior, and so far they have shown no indication theyre prepared to do that. If iran were really serious, they would come to the table. Joining me now are haga Hagar Shamali and jared blonk. Jared, i want to start with you. We were just chatting ahead of this segment that you spent an awful lot of time in your career negotiating this deal. And now its essentially been
ripped apart. There are some signs that perhaps we will begin talking directly with iran. Is this a situation where there is a way forward in your view or not . Well, i think its, first of all, important to say theres a way forward for the remaining participants of the jcpoa. Europe. Europe, china, iran, russia. Theyre still working very hard to salvage what i would call a rump version of the jcpoa. Its difficult but not impossible. For the u. S. And iran, i think its very, very difficult to imagine a real negotiation if the u. S. Is in violation of the terms of the jcpoa. If the europeans and which i these can save a rump version of the deal, maybe theres a way back into a diplomatic process. This idea that we tear up the deal, we impose partial economic pressure that doesnt quite measure up to the pressure that we altogether imposed eight years ago and miraculously we go back to the table and get much,
much more than we did the first time around, that just doesnt work. Hagar, the president did tweet that irans economy is going very bad very fast. You can see it there. He says i will meet or not meet, it doesnt matter, its up to them. There are some signs that there are real issues in the iranian economy. How does that play into this back and forth . Well, listen, the iranian government has never really pursued good economic policies. They complained for years during sanctions that the u. S. San sanctions were targeting their people at large which wasnt true. They had bad economic policies and terrible safeguards which is one of the reasons european banks never went back into iran even after the deal. This plays an Important Role in the future right now in the situation were in because a lot of businesses and banks arent going to go back in if its not if its too risky for
them, if its not of interest to them, if its not their benefit, partly because of the u. S. Sanctions but partly because it may not be worth it to them. The president also tweeted to iranian president rouhani, never, ever threaten the United States again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before. We are no longer a country that will stand for your demented words of violence and death. Be cautious. How does this come across in iran and what risks is the president taking here with this kind of rhetoric . Listen, these dictators are always going to push this kind of rhetoric. I find it kind of interesting that the iranian president is pushing this far to say this mother of all wars and things like that. I will say iran does pose real threats to the United States, certainly in the cyber field. They have done things before, they have attacked u. S. Banks. These are activities that the u. S. Treasury department has taken action against so i dont want to play lightly with this. At the same time, these
dictators, including President Trump, they play a lot with words over twitter. I expect that to escalate, but i do expect that they both have a genuine interest to meet. Now, the Trump Administration has made it clear that there are two goals with the reimposition of sanctions today has to do with first renegotiating the nuclear deal and second with changing iranian behavior, particularly as it relates to its nefarious behavior in the region. I think theres an opportunity there. I think theres possibilities. But it is a long and tough road. As jarrett mentioned, its much harder when you dont have this coalition together. Quickly before we go, are there any implications for u. S. Companies as these sanctions are reimposed . Theyre not huge because even under the jcpoa there are extreme restrictions with u. S. Business with iran. Boeings largest set of orders in 2016 were from iran and obviously those have been lost. Jarrett of course a Senior Fellow at the carnegie
