Accept. But the president still remains open to working with the russians on areas of mutual concern. But as the white house tries to turn the focus on its latest Foreign Policy efforts, the attention of todays briefing at times was split with another story, the highly anticipated 60 minutes interview starring Stormy Daniels. Were not sure if the president watched the interview, but what we do know is that 22 million plus folks in this country watched. Raj shah responded to a number of questions in the briefing today, including when the president and the campaign and the Trump Organization violated federal election laws when daniels was paid 130,000 for her silence. I can speak for only the white house and i can say obviously white house didnt engage in any wrongdoing. The campaign or mr. Cohen the campaign or mr. Cohen can address anything with respect to their actions. With respect to that interview, ill say the president strongly clearly and has consistently denied these underlying claims and the only person who has been inconsistent is the one making the claims. Following the reaction from the white house right now nbcs geoff bennett. And you were in the room for those remarks from raj shah, let as start with the Stormy Daniels issue. Weve heard the president say nothing about this. Hes been notably silent on twitter. And complained about fake news on twitter today. But i was struck by what he said about this, calling out Stormy Daniels and in effect challenging them to put out more evidence. Reporter that is right. And look, the white house has previously denied any involvement between President Trump and Stephanie Clifford, aka Stormy Daniels. And while much of what daniels revealed was sorted and salacious, there are parts that could be, as you well know, politically and legally significant to include the issue of the physical threat. Remember she said she was threatened back in 2011 while she was in las vegas. Right after she tried to sell her version of the alleged affair to a magazine. And our colleague Kristen Welker pressed raj shah about. That take a look. Was the president aware of a physical threat made against miss daniels when she was with her daughter back in 2011 . Well the president doesnt believe that any of the claims that mrs. Daniels made last night in the interview are accurate. He doesnt believe she was threatened. No, he does not. What is the basis for that. Im sorry . What is his basis. He believed there is nothing to corroborate her. Did he have dinner with mr. Cohen on saturday. Yeah, he did. And they are punching back suggesting that Stormy Daniels has been inconsistent in her story but the president so far has never once said or tweeted her name, peter. That was striking. And another major piece of news. This was about the decision by the United States now to expel 60 Russian Diplomats in this country. Theyre also going to shut down a russian consulate in seattle because of its proximity to a u. S. Naval base and boeing headquarters. How did the white house explain this decision . Well the white house said it stands with the u. K. In retaliating against russia for the poisoning of aformer russian spy on british soil. s said, it is expelling 60 Russian Diplomats, 48 here in washington and 12 assigned to the u. N. In north korea aew yor seattle near a boeing manufacturing facility and a near a u. S. Submarine base so that has to close by april 2nd. The diplomats have to leave the country by next week, peter. Aubd heard raj shah talk about it but before that Sarah Huckabeesanders issued a statement saying these steps make clear to russia that its actions have consequences. The big question now is how or whether russia will retallity. Peter. Geoff bennett at the white house. Thank you. Well see you back there shortly. As weve been saying, the u. S. And more than a dozen allies are expelling russian officials in solidarity with britain. This morning the Trump Administration announcing that it is kicking out the 60 plus Russian Diplomats in what is being called the largest collective expulsion of russian Intelligence Officers in history. This does come in response to the poisoning of an exrussian spy and his daughter while on british soil. U. S. And foreign officials blame the kremlin for the attack. Of course russia has denied being involved. British Prime Minister theresa may spoke out about the wave of support today. I have found great solidarity from our friends and partners in the e. U. , north america and beyond over the past few weeks after weve confronted the after math of the salisbury incident and we will not tolerate russian s intent to underminor values. So speak more about this is former ambassador daniel freed abelong his 40 years in foreign service, assistant secretary of state for European Affairs and ambassador from poland from 1997 until 2000 and played a key role in designing american policy in europe after the fall of the soviet union. Thank you for being here. With your expertise on this, first your gut reaction to this decision by the u. S. Today. The expulsion of 60 Russian Diplomats, what say you . Is that enough to make a real difference . It is a good step. Even better we did it with our allies instead of all on our own. But no, it is not enough to make a difference. So what would make a difference . You talk about the requirement, follow the money as you indicated to me before we sat down on this set. So what would that look like . And what would better satisfy you and some of the critics of the way this administration has so far handled russia . I think first the Administration Needs to make clear what its policy is. To say the signals have been mixed is to understate the confuse is led by the president s words. That is part of the problem. Do we mean it when we say that russia is a threat . That was in the president S National Security strategy. But he doesnt say it. So if your putin, who do you believe . The president or the people who work for the president . So that is a problem. The administration has done a credible job maintaining the existing sanctions and even introducing a few of its own. But if we are seriously mad at what the russia yanz ha russis have been doing, the aggression and the attempted murder in the u. K. , the interference in our elections if we want to show we are going to oppose such aggression, we need to make them feel it. So when you talk about making them feel it, you say getting to their pocket book, the oligarchs and Vladimir Putin himself. Not just the oligarchs but the inner circumstance and t thein the circle and the conduits and go after that inner circle and go start drawing up the channels for dark russian money coming into the United States and into Miami Real Estate and new York Real Estate and do it with the brits so they take care of london and the french and the germans. Can you talk about what i could best describe as this delicate dance the president appears to be doing as it relates to russia. A couple of days ago after the sanctioning of russia for the first time of meddling in the election and before the expulsion of diplomats, the president spoke by phone to putin and congratulated him for his election. Did not confront him about the meddling or the poisoning of a former russian spy in the u. K. Can he have it both ways like that . Is there precedent for that or a way policy can be handled. If you know what you are doing and serious in discipline, you can do more than one thing at the same time. During Reagan Administration we learned how to work with the soviets in one track and push back hard in another track. But to make that work, you have to be clear to the world and to your selves what it is actually that you are doing. And the problem is lack of clarity. So when the president spoke by phone to president putin, it wasnt clear what he was conveying. Strength . On on seek weous kind of bowing down. We have to make clear what we are trying to achieve and then you can start sorting out the right now what were trying to achieve is in the president s head as people view this. Ambassador, i appreciate your expertise. Thank you very much. Hes a distinguish fellows at the Atlantic Council as well. And another topic that weve been focusing on. The other big story. New questions after the adult film start Stormy Daniels claimed she was physically threatened to stop her from speaking out about her alleged relationship with donald trump a decade ago and that long awaited 60 minutes interview daniels who has the real name Stephanie Clifford said the threat came after she agreed weeks before to tell her story to in touch magazine sister publication. Take a listen. I was in a parking lot going to a fitness class with my infant daughter. Taking the seats facing backwards in the backseat and diaper bag and getting all of the stuff out and i guy walked up on me and said to me, leave trump alone. Forget this story. And then he leaned around and looked at my daughter and said, a beautiful little girl, it would be ashame if something happened to her mom and then he was gone. You took it as a direct threat. Absolutely. I was rattled. I went into the workout class and my hands were shaking so much i was afraid i would drop her. Did you ever see the person again . No. But if i did i would know it right away. Did you go to the police . No. Why . Because i was scared. The white house said the president does not believe daniels claims of the threat and both his lawyer and the white House Counsel deny trump had an affair with daniels. Waurking us throu waurking walking us through the legal ramifications our guest. A good expert on all of these types of things. Mimi thank you for being with us. For a simple question to you. I was struck what was new today as for the first time we really heard a more aggressive pushback from the president s team. From the white house saying the president doesnt believe anything that Stormy Daniels is saying right now. Basically said that there was no corroboration on her claims. Is that in effect serve to tempt daniels to put out more information. I would think so. It seems almost like hes theyre baiting her and her lawyer who certainly has been very proactive in this area of trying to get her story out and establish her credibility. It is interesting that they use the word corroborate, tlashat a lawyerly term and it is not saying they arent true, these are false or lies, it is saying you cant prove they are true and were not in a court of law. Were in a court public opinion. So im not sure how much that is going to ring true with the american public. The corroboration point is going to be a very important one if and when, as i believe is already happening as been reported, if and when a prosecutor like mueller or somebody else looks at these facts soirks wh facts. So what is the biggest potential risk for the president as it relates to Stormy Daniels. That he knew about the money being paid, that he had some connection to a threat that was made to Stormy Daniels . What are you focused on when you hear her claims and the white house pushback . Both of the things that you just said. So first it was their a Campaign Finance violation of a criminal nature. If the payment was made the 130,000 payment was made by mr. Cohen in to influence the election, that is sort of the standard under the statute, if it was made to influence the election by keeping this information secret, and if trump knew about that payment and didnt report it, then both certainly mr. Cohen but also the president would have some criminal exposure. Now as to the threat, which in in ways on its face seems more serious. Everyone understands that threatening someone, threatening their child, threatening their family is inherently dangerous and criminal in nature. Can be. Now it is true as they said, we have not yet seen corroboration for her claim. I dont know sitting here right now whether they have that, but if they do or if if other investigators like mueller or other prosecutors have in some other way found corroboration. It is not up to the victim to provide corroboration. A victim of a threat it is up to the investigators. So te may have it, they may not. If they do, that is an extraordinary serious charge that could be charged as a state or even potentially federal extortion charge. So we should explain to our audience that an attorney for michael cohen, the president s lawyer denied any involvement with the alleged threat and demanded daniels retract ore statement to 60 minutes saying the following, saying here it is. In truth mr. Cohen had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with any such person or incident and does not believe any such person exists or that such incident ever occurred. I hereby demand you and your client cease and desist from making any further false and defamatory statements about my client and immediately retract and apologize to mr. Cohen through the national media. We wait and see if that will occur here. But maybe to you, i think a lot of people have been struck by the fact the president has yet to tweet to say anything publicly about Stormy Daniels. What is the risk to him to engage in that way . Is it somehow invalidate any agreement that would exist even if he never signed on as a party to it . Yeah. I look i think hes already maybe crossed that line by filing this lawsuit and bringing his true name he admitted that hes the d. D. , the alias in the lawsuit. And there is real danger in being the one to file the lawsuit. Now hes the plaintiff and so the plaintiff is even more exposed in in a civil case to possibly be deposed and discovery than if you are defending in the civil case. And if he tweets similarly, he opens himself up, yes, to the claim that invalidated the agreement and also possible further defamation claims. That is sort of how this whole thing started, they were saying that the president is lying about the things that he is saying about the various women. Mimi rocah from the South District of new york. Thank you very much. Appreciate your time. Thank you. On top of revelations that Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed data from millions of facebook users, the data firm is now facing new allegations that it broke u. S. Election laws. The private Watchdog Group common cause is its name is asking the Justice Department to investigate saying there is reasonably the reasonable that Cambridge Analytica and its executives acted knowingly and willfully in violating u. S. Law and the group filed a complaint with the federal Election Commission and the Washington Post reported that former workers from Cambridge Analytica said the firm sent foreigners to advise u. S. Campaigns. Tom hamburger is a reporter for the Washington Post. Hes joining us now. Tom, you and your colleague craig timberg, i want to walk through the reporting. You spoke with three people who used to work for Cambridge Analytica and they told you that concerns about the legality of Cambridge Analyticas work in the u. S. Were a regular subject of employee conversations at the company. Especially afrt after the 2014 election. So what kind of violations of law were they worried . About. Theyd had a warning from an attorney employed by Cambridge Analytica to be careful and mindful of u. S. Federal election law which prohibits foreign nationals from having a decisionmaking role in u. S. Political kaix campaigns, that means working for a candidate or superpack, anything participating in a u. S. Election has to be careful and with the three employees, former works, they said despite the warnings talking among themselves felt concerned that they may be in breach of this legal advice because as they told it to us, they were concerned that they were provictimed in effect substantive providing substantive information to the u. S. Organizations involved in federal elections. We should note that Cambridge Analytica has denied any wrongdoing but didnt comment for your story before it went to print. Can you describe the scope of Cambridge Analyticas work for u. S. Campaigns . Is this something broadly in the past as it relates to the foreigners or how should we view it in the current climate . Sure. Happy to discuss that. I want to first say that we did reach out to Cambridge Analytica and other actors in this story, not only the u. S. Or british Patient Company scl but to members of the Mercer Family and steve bannon who had been officers of Cambridge Analytica in the u. S. And on your specific question once again was the specific was as it related to Cambridge Analyticas involvement in u. S. Elections, at this time. Yes. So Cambridge Analytica, one of the things that we learned from conversations with the former employees, among them Christopher Wylie who has been the most outspoken selfproclaimed whistleblower is that the company had an interest starting in 2014 with a establishing a u. S. Base, really appealing to republican candidates and Republican Party officials that they could use their special psycho graphic and other data to appeal to voters and win over new republican voters. The effort started in 2014 when they were involved directly and indirectly in support of candidates or superpac supporting candidates oro posing candidates in new york, arkansas and oregon. In 2016 they were hired as a contractor by the trump president ial campaign and before that the cruz president ial campaign. Tom hamburger, political investigations reporter with the Washington Post. Tom, thank you very much for spending time with us. Up next, americas youth they made history this weekend when hundreds of thousands of students gathered here in washington for that historic march for our lives. There were protests all across the country. All across the world. But they are not done yet. After the break, well be joined by two survivors of the Parkland School shooting. They have launched a new initiative called parents promise to kids. Well explain how you can get involved, next. One of the oldest gun makers is filing for bankruptcy. Remington outdoors is facing declining gun sales and remington made the gun, a bushmaster ar15 used to kill 26 Young Students and adults there. The company saw sales drop resulting in the loss of millions of dollars after the a the election of President Trump. It was history in the making on saturday when the world marched for their lives. An estimated 800,000 students, many of them filling the National Mall here welcome to the revolution. It is a powerful and peaceful one because it is of by and for the young people of this country. Today we are presenting a banner to the Parkland Community from the newtown community. We know your pain, we know what you are going through and we are inspired by your fight for change. I am here today to acknowledge and represent the africanamerican girls who story dont make the front page of every national newspaper. [ cheering and applause ] i represent the africanamerican women who are victims of gun violence who are simply statistics and instead of vibrant beautiful girls and full of potential. My grand father had a dream that his four little children will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of her character. I am have a dream that enough is enough. And that this should be a gunfree world. Period. Since the time that i came out here, it has been 6 20 seconds. The shooter had ceased shooting and will soon abandon his rifle, blend in the students as they escape and walk free for an hour before arrest. Fight for your lives before it is someone elses job. Emma gonzalez, it is hard not to be moved by stories and moments this weekend. Nearly 5,000 people registered to vote on saturday. That is according to head count, a nonpapt group at the marches. And a push parents promise to kids tone courage voters to sign a contract vowing to vote for candidates as they describe it put child safety ahead of guns. Im joined by two of the students who started parents promise to kids. Adam buck wald and zack hishman. Both juniors at Marjory Stoneman douglas and joined by teacher at Marjory Stoneman douglas, sharon learner in d. C. With the reach and speaking at the rally. Im grateful for your time. I want to start with you, adam, quickly if i can for a moment. You both are as i understand it you are 16 years old. You cant vote yet correct. You can by the next president ial election but the goal is to use your voices to make sure parents and loved ones and other adults make a commitment to vote on your behalf. Is that right. Absolutely. So walk us through the goal you hope to accomplish by this. I just want to start out by saying that my name is adam buck wald and im a junior at Marjory Stoneman douglas. Right after the fraej tragedy of february 14th zack and i were so traumatized after what happened. My parents spoke to me, believe it or not, zack came over to my house a dayar t after the shooting and we wanted to make a change in the world. My parents made this promise, we see everyone is marching around the community and the nation and we want to do something different. We just introduced this wonderful movement called parents promise to kids. This is a contract that were asking everyone parent and grandparent in the nation to promise their children that they will vote for ethical legislators who will put childrens safety over guns. We are giving children a voice. And kid under 18 cannot vote. If their parents promise that child they will vote for these leaders, it will impact all elections. And zack, let me ask you if i can to follow up on that. As i understand it more than 4700 people have downloaded this contract. First of all. What number are you shooting for in terms of American Adults that sign this contract on your behalf . Were looking for every parent in the nation. Because if every parent in the nation signs a contract that symbolizes how powerful we are. And that is our main goal to get every single parent in the whole nation. And zack, talk about the challenge. What struck people is in the unique moment is how the voices of young people like yourselves from parkland has resonated. This is not something that disappeared or fell silent, were hearing more of the movement but the fundamental challenge is how do you keep this alive . What happens next in effect . Isnt that what you are trying to overcome, so this story doesnt disappear. Your personal experience. And the key word is persistent. And we have to keep fighting for change because i could speak for adam, myself and for the whole community of parkland and for all kids in the nation that we will not stop until we get change. Because we do not deserve to go to school in fear for our lives. That is not fair. We go to school to be educate and to learn and finally grow up and get a job. We dont go to school to be shot at so well keep fighting and be persistent until we reach change. Go ahead. I want to mention that were going to strive for change and get every parent and grand parent and rally and we are going to have everyone vote for these politicians who will focus on childrens safety and not take money from an outside source. I think nobody doubts what you can accomplish. Sarah learner, the teacher there, and as it were, first of all, thank you for your commitment to journalism and teaching young people about it. We need good young journalists now as much as any time in this country. I want to get a sense about what strikes you about what the young people are trying to accomplish and what they have already accomplished. You know the news cycle and how hard it is to be heard and theyve grabbed the mic and havent let go. No, you are absolutely right. Excuse me. They are tremendous and they are passional, they are welleducated, the same kids who want to know why they have an 88 or an 89 and how can they what can they do to get a 90. And this is what the passionate the passion in a simple request like that, is what they are taking across america to make change and i firmly believe that where all of the older generations have failed, these kids are going to succeed. Zack, if i, i want to play for our audience what we heard from the former u. S. Senator rim santorum this weekend saying what young people yourselves should be doing despite your time right now. Here is what he said. It is all about politics. Is this really all about politics or is it all about keeping our schools safe . Because it is about keeping our schools safety then we have to have much broader discussion than the discussion going on right now. How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking cpr classes. Zack, your response to that . I heard him mention making this about politics. But this is about this is not about red or blue or democrat or republican, it is about getting the right laws to keep us safe at school. And i mean, were fighting were the ones were the kids. It is the adults that have to change. We the kids can push the adults but we cant cause that change until we are adults so that is what were trying to push for. And sarah, to be clear, your a parent. A sixth grader and third grader, for you this is personal . Is. It is. My son goes to west glades right next to us. He was on lockdown when i was on lockdown and having to tell your child who is texgt you and in a panic, dont worry im not shot, im okay is horrifying. In three years hell be a student at Marjory Stoneman douglas and my daughter three years after that. And im not im 37, im 20 years older than the graduating seniors and my age bracket is working hard, all age brackets need to work hard to make sure that all people are safe in school and on the streets everywhere. And i im so proud of the students from park land and everything that they are doing because they are making noise, they are making a difference and they are making change. Sarah learner, we appreciate your time. To those watching, check out adam and zacks contract at their website parentspromisetokids. Org. And print it out and sign it. And we thank you all. And we wish you luck in your effort. We appreciate your time. Thank you. Shaping up to be another rough week for facebook as we learn more about how its user data was accessed by Cambridge Analytica. Consumer watch dogs now taking action. The federal trade commission has confirmed that it has an open nonpublic investigation into facebooks privacy practices. Nbc first reported that news last week. Facebook responding saying, it is strongly committed to protecting peoples information and that it appreciates the opportunity to answer the ftcs questions. Someone who has been following all of the twists and turns is ben popkin, the Senior Business reporter. Ben, so first simple question, what should we make of this investigation right now . Well just shows that things are getting even more serious for facebook. Users are taking it seriously and the company is taking it seriously. And now regulators even in this antiregulation probiz Trump Administration taking a hard look at facebooks datagathering and privacy practices. So potential consequences here are what . Absolutely. This ftc probe, it is for real. It could lead to possibly Enforcement Actions or even fines for the company. You can tell that the market is taking it seriously because the facebook shares went down afterward. Cambridge analytica, ben, isnt facebooks only problem right now. As weve witnessed. You have a new article out about how facebook has kept text and call logs on millions of people specifically with Android Phones. How does that fit into what we already know about facebooks privacy issues . This only complicates what is already a relentless window of time for facebook. Right. It adds to the noise happening around facebook. What is happening is for the first time really people are digging in and checking out their data. Theyre going to their facebook profile and saying, facebook knows all of this stuff about me and theyre downloading copies of their data and seeing how much facebook knows about them. And when they lift up the rocks they are horrified by what they see. The story that came out for Android Users using messenger, they had their call history recorded. This is isnt calls placed through the app, this is phone calls and texts outside of the app. They opted in to the messenger app having this permission. But now theyre seeing the record of it. They see the calls, who they are calling, the duration of the call, the time stamps down to the second and it is very unnerving for people to see how much data is there. So im sitting at home and flipping channels and watching msnbc, and can i feel safe as a facebook use thaer my information isnt being compromised right now . Should we be satisfied with the response weve seen . Well a lot of people arent. The thing is facebook acknowledged, yes, were reading this data and they basically said, were doing it. They didnt say they would stop doing it. So it is clear that they continue to have access to our data and people are growing more and more uncomfortable about it. How are people using this data . What is it being used to sell us . Sts st a new pair of shoes or, hey, vote for this guy and when it comes from the Cambridge Analytica information and then its connected to meddling and election meddling, it is making people feel uncomfortable. They used to think that is where i share my cute cat photos, not im involved in this election meddling. It is very serious for facebook. I think a lot of people agree with that. Ben popkin, nbc News Business reporter. Thanks. Facebooks troubles have tromt prompted companies to pull ads. Mozilla, you recognize that name, they said it was, quote, pressing pause on the facebook ads because of privacy concerns. We have mozilla chief marketing officer with us. That is yasrha wolf. Thank you for your time. I want to get get a sense of the thinking behind this decision. What led you to make this move. Thanks for having me. We make fire fox and mozilla advocates for Technology Companies to treat people like humans to take care of them. Over the course of the last two weeks, two things have happened. First is were reviewing or advertise looking at channels and the discussion around Cambridge Analytica and facebook had us take a second look at facebook. To look deeper into what exactly was happening and the discussion taking place around facebook and ult play ultimately we claim the conclusion we didnt know the details and there is not enough transparency so we made a decision to pause our advertising. In addition, as an Advocacy Group we started a petition asking for pa asking for facebook to change the default data. How can you help us i want to make sure that people understand. So explain that . What do you need to see happen to be satisfied that facebook has taken sufficient action fob audience that doesnt understand this process as well as you do. You bet. For you and i, when we log back into facebook and asked to do something, to log into an application or try a game or share information with another party that facebook tells us very simply exactly what will happen with our data. Who has it, and what they are going to do wnd what value im going to get with fr it. As a suzuser it should be simplo understand what will happen with my data and when that happens well start to advertise on facebook again. Has facebook how much is that . When you say advertising that your yanking money wise, how much is that . Well we spend a good deal of money in advertising, were tiny compared to some of our biggest competitors like google and microsoft. That being said, facebook for us has made up less than 10 or around 10 of our Marketing Budget over the last couple of years. That is in the low seven digit numbers. So it is a good number a good dollar amount and a good amount of work that goes into our side of marketing on top of facebook. If you are not alone in it process. Has facebook engaged mozilla on this specifically . Is this a twoway street . Are you hearing back from them. We did begin discussions last week and were encouraged and by the public statements facebook has made. That being said conversationed and public commentary is just that. Words and comments. And what we need to see is actions taking place in the product itself. Let me ask you to conclude here, there is a big concern that you cant sort of put this back in the bag after this information is out there. The bottom line is even if mozilla comes back and facebook makes commitments going forward, can you say to the people who use your platform, we think it is all under control or do you have to acknowledge that information has been compromised. You dont know whose hands it is in right now. There is a responsibility for every business to take their people that use their products data seriously. And it is our responsibility as an organization and every other Technology Company that collects user data to be clear about how theyre data is being used. It isnt going to end today. It shouldnt end today. In fact, what were really encouraged by is the fact that privacy and user data is becoming a mainstream discussion. That is an incredible step forward in making sure the in r inter the internet is a safe place. And with the back drop of the golden gate bridge. Thank you very much. Thank you for having me. The white house pushing back on reports that v. A. Secretary David Shulkin could be next. The bottom line is we always seven at the pleasure of the president and if hes not pleased youll know it. At this point in time he does have confidence in dr. Shulkin and he is the secretary and done some great things at the v. A. But as you know the president wants to put right people in the right place at the right time and that could change. That was fox and friends this morning. But after the break, a very different story from a friend of the president. I used to. I even accept i have a higher risk of stroke due to afib, a type of irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve problem. But no matter where i ride, i go for my best. So if theres Something Better than warfarin, ill go for that too. Eliquis. Eliquis reduced the risk of stroke better than warfarin, plus had less major bleeding than warfarin. Eliquis had both. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Im still going for my best. And for eliquis. Ask your doctor about eliquis. But im not standing still. And with godaddy, ive made my ideas real. I made my own way, now its time to make yours. Everything is working, just like it should you or joints. Something for your heart. But do you take something for your brain. With an ingredient originally found in jellyfish, prevagen is the number one selling brainhealth supplement in drug stores nationwide. Prevagen. The name to remember. The cloud of uncertainty hanging over this white house, pick a day any number of white house staffers jobs are reportedly on the line. Heres what the white house had to say just last hour. Can you talk a little about David Shulkin, is he going to be fired face to face or is he going to be in the media on twitter . I have no personal announcements to make at this time. For the moment all eyes seem to be focus on Veterans Affairs secretary David Shulkin after an Inspector General report found he violated ethics rules by accepting wimbledon tickets and a staffer doctored emails with his wife traveling with him at taxpayer expense. We are joined now by chris whipple, the author of the gate keepers, how the white house chiefs of staff define every presidency in terms of defining this presidency, chris, you know well, there has been so Much Movement behind the scenes. Its a real challenge for these chiefs of staff. I want to play for you what we heard from one of the president s close allies, his close friend about how things are going in the west wing right now. Heres chris ruddy. The president told me hes perplexed by all of these reports theres chaos at the white house or mass staff changes. He told me that he thinks the white house is operating like a smooth machine, his words. So, you know the way that things work behind the scenes in white houses based on your conversations over the years. By any account, is this a smooth machine . Not by any stretch of the imagination. Weve never seen anything like it. The chaos continues. The revolving door spins faster and faster. You know, ive been critical of Reince Priebus and john kelly, the white house chiefs of staff and there is plenty to be critical about. But at the end of the day, the real problem is you have a president who has learned nothing about governing, who doesnt even know what hes for or against at any given moment. Weve seen that with tariffs. Weve seen it with school violence. Weve seen it with the spending bill. Under those circumstances, it may be Mission Impossible for a white house chief to execute the president s agenda when it isnt clear from moment to moment what that agenda is. But, chris, isnt it possible that this is based on all the conversations and i spend my days at the white house speaking to people in and around the west wing, this is the way this president works. He likes the clash, he likes the collision of ideas in front of him. He leans one way then leans the other before he makes a choice. Is it possible this is just how the man works . No. And we need to of course its the way the man works, but you cannot run the white house the way you run the 26th floor of trump houtowe. Thats first lesson of the presidency. It was clear the First Six Months when there was no empowered white house chief of staff. John kelly has been somewhat empowered, but it still remains a model of chaos. This is not a fancy theory of chaos management. It is just chaos. Every president who has tried to govern without a white house chief, by the way, has failed. And so the only thing worse than a flawed trying to run a white house with a flawed chief of staff is to run one without a chief of staff at all. And there are reports that trump is thinking about doing that. So, i was going to raise the reports. We have conversations with associates of the president , the president has privately mused about this idea, basically become the ceo and in effect acting as his own chief of staff. Is there any, a, precedent, b, a way that would be a sustainable system for the commander in chief . The fact steve bannon is in favor of this plan tells you everything you need to know about it. Bannon doesnt care about governing. Steve bannon is a chaos agent. And if you love chaos, this is the model for you. Jerry ford tried it. He called it the spokes of the wheel, with the president at the center. Everybody coming, going, nobody empowered. After a month he realized it was a disaster. Jimmy carter tried to govern without a white house chief. 2 1 2 years in with his agenda stalled, he appointed a white house chief. It was too late for jimmy carter, but thats the lesson of history. Chris, limited time, last thought. Is it possible what is the impact of this uncertainty on staffers in the west wing . How much more difficult is it not just for the chief of staff, but for everyone to do their job, what everyone is looking to see whether they get a tweet, as it were, about them each day . Not only is it almost impossible to do your job effectively with that sort of damaclese in effect over your head, but when you have no idea really what the agenda is or what the president is for or against at any given moment, it makes governing almost impossible. Chris whipple is author of the gate keepers. How the white house chiefs of staff define every presidency. Chris, appreciate your time. Thanks so much. Thanks for having me. Breaking news, the markets minutes away from closing after the dow surged 650 points. After fridays big losses this is a bounce back. Were joined by sue herera. Where do we stand . Tea hi hi, peter. The market is up almost 700 points on the session. Highs of the trading day. Part of the reason is the heated rhetoric of last week concerning trade has really cooled off. And as a result of that the market is rallying, thinking maybe these trade tariffs are only a negotiating tool and not something that will be punitive and hurt the relationship between the u. S. And china and the u. S. And its other allies so it looks like a very strong finish going into the close. Peter . Better take your drama mean. We could be in for a ride over the course of the next several months. I think thats the new normal. No doubt. Sue herera, thanks very much. That will wrap things up for me. I will see you for the white house tomorrow morning. Thank you for watching. Deadline white house with my friend Nicolle Wallace begins right now. Hi, everyone. Its 4 00 in new york. Theres stormy news to report. Were going to get to that in a minute. But first the latest on Donald Trumps incredible shrinking legal team in the special counsel investigation into potential ties to russia and possible obstruction of justice. The New York Times is reporting the president s Legal Defense team is now a oneman operation and the Washington Post writes that the unraveling of the president s legal team has left his advisors concerned. People familiar with the situation said the president has been counseled by friends that he needs to find a new lawyer to quarterback his team. Efforts are underway by people close to trump to hire a new lawyer. But those efforts are not going well. The new lawyers that trump thought he enlisted late last week conflicted out over the weekend. The white house writing, the question, the president is disappointed that
