The United States. Its probably one of the reasons i was elected, maybe one of the main reasons. But were not going to let that happen. But trump has other things to worry about right now. Hes dealing with a significant resignation from his legal team. The president s lead lawyer, the guy on the right, john dowd has resigned. The latest shakeup comes as the president told this to reporters. Will you testify to special counsel Robert Mueller. I would like to i would like to, said the president. Covering all of this for us, from the white house, is nbc news geoff bennett. Lets start with the president s legal woes. What is happening today . Reporter well, yeah, remember last week the president tweeted that john dowd was doing a great job and he was very happy with him. Now doud is stepping down in a decision we understand that is ma mutual. And saying the president didnt feel he could guide the team and dowd was frustrated with the president bringing in new attorneys and it is a sign that the president is becoming more aggressive in his approach to the special counsel investigators. Remember this past week the president brought in joe digenova, the lawyer who has espoused unfound conspiracy theories and Mark Kasowitz who stepped down in july from the legal Team Handling russia investigation matters but we understand kat kasowitz could come back into the fold. All of this shaking out as the president edges closer to agreeing to an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller. Geoff, and in the shadow of this, the president announced something that weve been expecting all week is that is the big tariffs on china. Well talk in more details later on about what that means. But ultimately, there is even a break in the white house about this. This is of course what caused gary cohn to resign. That is right. And president said hes taking the biggest step yet to level the economic Playing Field with china. So the president today instructed u. S. Trade representative Robert Lighthizer to levy tariffs on at least 50 billion in chinese imports so over the next two weeks we understand the u. S. Will come up with a proposed list of products that would face these higher tariffs. Here is the president speaking about it earlier today. Weve lost i mean so many factors. Probably 60,000 factories. Nobody can believe it. When i first heard the number, i said that cant be real. We lost from 6 to 7 million jobs over a relatively short period of time. And it is a whole different thing. Reporter and you know the stuff better than most so i dont have to tell you, policy makers across the country across the world are warning ever a trade war that could undermine the u. S. And global economy. Beijing will retaliate, meaning the things that come with a maid in china tag could get more expensive and theyre also, we understand, going to target the u. S. Agriculture industry which means a lot of people in Trump Country could bear the brunt of this. That is by design, the chinese deciding to target their trade responses where it hurts. Geoff, thank you very much. Geoff bennett at the white house. And back to the breaking news we mentioned at the top of the hour. The latest departure of an attorney from the trump team, john dowd. In a statement he confirmed the exit and said, quote, i love the president and wish him very well. And nbc newss Kristen Welker reports the decision behind the departure was mutual. With this latest departure the Trump Legal Team is dwindling at a sensitive final. Today he told reporters would talk to Robert Mueller. And with me is contributor barbara mcquaid. The former u. S. Attorney for michigan. Barbara, this is a big deal. This was the president s lead attorney and in the complicated world of attorneys and the white house ones and the Trump Organization ones, this is actually the team representing the president in the special counsel investigation. What do you think what do you make of the lead attorney resigning . Its a Significant Development but i think it is not surprising in light of the addition of joe digenova in recent days. If you are the head coach of a Football Team and the owner hires another head coach, you say what do you need two of us for . So i think in light of that, especially someone who has a very different strategy, the things that joe degenova said and the conspiracy theories suggest a different kind of strategy and so we might be seeing a very a significant change in the strategy from the president as well. I guess the question is what you have this serious a matter that esteemed legal team why does the decision lie. It does seem dowd and the president were not on the same page on the investigation including where it should go and what level of appropriation donald trump should provide. Well ultimately in any legal matter the client gets to the make the decision and call the shots. But relying on the advice and recommendations of the attorney. And so when you have a good attorney, one would hope that you are in sync and consistent and the client is following the advice of the lawyer. But when there is conflict there, sometimes you see this parting of the ways. Frankly what often happens in cases that ive seen when someone fires their lawyer or a resignation occurs because the client isnt happy with the way things are going. They dont like the way the case is going and so the easiest thing to do to shake things up is to hire a new lawyer and maybe that will result in a different outcome. Often it does not. Im a little puzzled. I was when the president made his trade announcement and he walked out and asked questions as one would expect on a different topic and asked about this whether he would sit down or agree to sit down with Robert Mueller and he said hes looking forward to doing so. We havent heard that language from the president yet. Yeah. I still wonder whether it is true or if that is a p. R. Tactic. When you are a public figure like the president there is the the court of law where you are fighting your case and then also the court of public opinion. And i think the president himself has to say, of course im eager to tell my side of the story and then it could be his lawyers who are the ones negotiating behind closed doors to make it a much tougher sell. Good to talk to you. Barbara mcquaid, former u. S. Attorney. And china is already preparing a retaliation against Donald Trumps tariffs saying it would take all necessary measures to defend its interests. Dozens of kpz have signed off letters warning the administration that sweeping tariffs would trigger a negative chain reaction. Stifling u. S. Agriculture and exports and raising costs for businesses and consumers, why should you care about this . Well this could mean that things are about to get more the under tariffs would apply to goods in more than 100 categories, including popular items for american buyers. Goes out saying, a take a look at your house and shelves and the number of things coming from china will stagger you. According to the executive Vice President of the American Apparel and Footwear Association, roughly 72 of shoes sold in the United States come from china. Were talking about Companies Like nike, under armour and clothing. The American Apparel and Footwear Association estimates about 41 of apparel comes from china. And that includes Companies Like gap, american eagle, levis and abercrombie and finch. And for those of you like shopping at Companies Like walmart, costco and target and macys, they warned trdonald trp about these tariffs are implemented. China has set its site on u. S. Agriculture exports from states that helped elect donald trump. Now this isnt the only issue rattling u. S. China relations. Donald trump recently signed legislation that would improve relations between the United States and taiwan. If you are a person of a certain age youll remember that all of the stuff in your house used to come from taiwan. This would encourage diplomatic activity between the two countries and that has infury ated the chinese. Taiwan is an island north and east of hong kong. The u. S. Does not formally recognize the island as an in dependent nation because china forbids it. They consider it a province even though china has its own democratically elected government. Before 1979, the u. S. Did recognize and have diplomatic relations with taiwan. That is what everybody treated as china and turfed taiwan aside for a more lucrative relationship with the peoples republic of china. We decided it was more lucrative to support china than taiwan. Joining me now is gary lock, a commerce secretary under president obama before becoming the obama administrations u. S. Ambassador to china. Before he served two storms as the governor of washington. The first chineseamerican governor in u. S. History and has a lot of perspective on this, sir, good to see you. Good to be with you. And taiwan is a tricky issue. People of a certain age and i remember growing up and everything was made in taiwan and we still have a fairly robust business relationship with taiwan. But we basically shifted our allegiances over to the peoples republic of china and since 1994 we have been in a robust trading relationship with china. Where what do you think the chinese are thinking right now and how should that affect what we do in the United States . Well obviously the mainland, peoples republic of china is not happy with the recent overtures between the United States and taiwan. But this is an issue that has her plexed and aggravated the chinese any time we sell a weapon, military equipment to taiwan. The mainland gets upset. But bien large the relationship has continued to grow. What is more upsetting to the relationship is the tariffs that the Trump Administration has announced it will obviously china the main land will retaliate and your report indicated, it will affect the cost of everything that americans buy on a daily basis. So much of what we use an consume owe on a daily basis is made in china. So the tariffs that are surcharges or taxes on goods coming from china will mean americans pay higher prices for the things they already buy. But china will retaliate. When 25 of all boeing airplanes made in america are sold to china, when 30 of the soy beans that American Farmers grow is sold to china, china will simply raise the prices of those goods which means that the chinese instead will buy airbus or theyll by soy beans from brazil with a huge surplus. Doesnt the president have a as ham fisted as this is, doesnt the president have a point and which he has agreement from Bernie Sanders and agreement from left wing economists that, look, this has acted our wage base and it has affected our jobs. We have become prisoners to lowpriced goods and if you like lowpriced goods, china is nirvana. Well, china right now is a source of low priced goods but soon it will move to another country whether it is vietnam or thailand. Ultimately it will move to africa. Because at first it was mexico and hong kong and taiwan as you indicated, that was a source of a lowcost goods and then as their economy grew, the low cost manufacturing entities moved to china and as wages grow in china it will move somewhere else. But there are legitimate concerns about the china trade policy. So many u. S. Businesses foreign businesses are not able to compete on a level Playing Field. So we can all agree that china trade practices are hurting American Companies and workers. The question is whether or not imposing these unilateral surcharges on chinese goods will bring the jobs back or provide a level Playing Field for American Companies and American Workers selling product news chin pros into china. And we are headed into a trade war and in a trade war, all sides lose. Consumers lose and the workers on both sides lose. The United States should be really working with all of our allies in europe and in other parts of asia to make sure that china plays on has a level Playing Field for all foreign firms, working in china doing business in china and instead of ourselves. Wont be in the Transpacific Partnership something Hillary Clinton said she would also pull out of, wouldnt that have been simpler, having a better trade relationship with everybody around china and being able to exert that sort of pressure. Now that were not in the tpp, we have less pressure to apply. Well for all of the complaints that the president has and the administration has and American Companies have about how when they sell American Goods into other countries, those goods are subject to a high surcharge which makes those American Goods more expensive compared to goods coming from other countries. And yet those countries when they sell their stuff into america, dont have such a high surcharge. And when people complain that oh, the companies of america have to abide by High Environmental Health and human safety standards, and companies in other countries, whether vietnam or thailand dont have to do that. When the farmers in other counties dont have to take care of workers or protect the environment the way American Farmers do, the complaint it is unfair to American Business and growers and products from other countries are cheaper and products from america are more expensive. That is what the tpp would have done. It would have addressed the concerns of american labor, that the president has and Many Democrats have about the unfair trade practices of other countries. When we with drew from the tpp, that means that American Goods will still have to be subject to the high surcharges in other countries, making American Goods more expensive but the goods coming from the other countries that are part of the tpp, like canada or from japan, they wont have to be subjected to the sur charge so their product is cheaper compared to american products. If we want to address some of these unfairness issues, we should be part of the tpp. And it would then demonstrate to china, hey, were all able to have low tariffs, low surcharges and protect intellectual property and have a level Playing Field and china you better follow suit as well. Gary locke. The former u. S. Ambassador to china and former commerce secretary and governor of washington. Take a look at the dow. This is what worried me. It worries me when the develvel of trading increases. The dow is off 530 points but i like to look at the left side which is the percentage gain. That is where i start to take notice. A bigger than 2 drop but as those of you who watch the show know, what i worry about is on the right side of the chart on top, when you start to see an increase in the drop in the final hour of trading. That means the computers are at work and the people dont know how International Markets will react to this talk of a potential trade war overnight and they dont want to be caught holding the bag and that is why you are seeing an increase drop. Ill watch that and it will worry me if it gets past 2. 5 but ill keep a close eye on it. Lawmakers are demanding answers from facebook on capitol hill and how the users data was accessed by Cambridge Analytica in 2013 and 2014. Staffers are meeting with members of the House Senate Intelligence committee amid growing calls for Mark Zuckerberg to recei testify. Mark zuckerberg has been out there on the airwaves and said he would be open to doing so and offered an apology of sorts. So this was a major breach of trust and im really sorry this happened. We have a basic responsibility to protect peoples data and if we cant do that, then we dont deserve to have the opportunity to serve people. Technology news site recode got an interview and one of the reporters joins me now. This is recode Senior Editor for social media. Good to see you. Thank you for being with us. I want to read you something that Mark Zuckerberg said yesterday from your coverage of it. Were going to do a full investigation of every single app that had access to a large amount of peoples data before 2014 and if we detect anything suspicious, were basically going to send in a team to do a full Forensic Audit and to confirm that no facebook data is being used in an improper way. He talked so much it is hard to grasp, what was the mayin point he was make and should we as users of facebook should feel safer as a result of what Mark Zuckerberg said yesterday. Well i think in that point specifically what he is saying is that were trying to find out if there are other Cambridge Analyticalike characters out there or other businesses doing things that we didnt know about that had your data and using it in ways we werent aware of and theyre saying they will go back and do that. I think this is almost an Impossible Task for facebook. They have to say this and they have to go through the process of trying to find out whether or not there are other bad actors out there but once and Mark Zuckerberg said this in interview with him, he said once the data leaves facebook servers and shows up on the servers of the other businesses and developers, there is only so much the company can do. So at this point so that is the point you are worried about. Back inside of the and that is a worry. If you are a facebook user, that is the news. Did facebook have a view there was an editorial in Washington Post. This is what you gave to facebook. This is not the same as equifax and they know about you than you do. Facebook is not supposed to know more about you than you do but it does seem with the information you provide to facebook along with the algo rhythms they can apply and the third parties like Cambridge Analytica can apply suggests they can know you better than at least those people closest to you. Well this is facebooks entire Business Model. It is a targeted advertising business so the more it knows about you, the better ads to surface to you and the more relevant it could be and charge for more advertisers. This is as people pointed out yesterday, a lot of changes facebook announced were were going to share less of your data with other people but nothing that facebook said about were going to take less of your data for ourselves. Facebook is still in the data business. It is very important to have a profile with them and for them to know who you are. So, yeah, i think this is data is what they built a multibillion dollar business on and that wont change. So i guess the issue is this. I can get my head around somebody breaking into equifax and taking stuff. That is a security issue and didnt protect my stuff properly. We have made a deal with the devil here. We have decided on the internet that we provide the internet with information and we get free things to use in exchange. We get certain benefits. And were just starting to get our head around the fact that without anybody stealing anything, without anybody breaching anything, bad things can happen with my stuff. Yeah, and that is that technical term, that breach is what facebook is pointed to consistently over the last couple of days and saying that is not a breach. You gave us this data and we gave it away and in a way that was consistent with our policies at the time and the policies have changed but that is very important. Because facebook is now as has been reported potentially under investigation by the ftc. And so the Company Wants to be very clear that, hey, we were not we were not negligent with your data. And nobody hacked in. It was given away in lines with the terms of a user and mishandled at that point and that is important for facebook to get across, this is not their fault. They are playing a victim card but people are fed up and i dont think it is landing the way that facebook had intended it to land. Thank you very much for your reporting on this. Appreciate it. Kurt wagner, a Senior Editor at recode. Up next, the final report from the House Intel Committee on the russia investigation. It is going to find no evidence of collusion. There is more criticism this afternoon for the house russia investigation. Republicans on the house intelligence chitty released seven pages ahead of the full release of the findings of no collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. However, the release will come without the democrats views represented. The democrats were not happy when the investigation was ended earlier this month. Suffice it to say that the majority was not interested in conducting any further investigation. Even when the flaws in what we have done so far have been become so aparent over the course of the last week. But our work will go on well be submitting minority views, we will also be conducting additional interviews and obtaining additional documents. Nbc news report that a democratic aligned advocacy group, the center for American Progress found the House Committee obtained other no or incomplete information from about 81 of the known contacts between Trump Officials and russians. That is kind of amazing given it is a congressional committee. They have the power to bring people in and talk to them. And nbc reporter heidi pryzblyza. And there are several investigations going on but you would think House Republicans would make more of an effort to make it look like theyve pursued it but this is so hyper partisan it is not getting done the right way. Weve heard from the beginning all complaints from democrats that witnesses they arent able to subpoena or documents they cant get their hands on. This is one of the most comprehensive studies that lays out both the volume and the frequency of these contacts between trurp Trump Officials and the russians to show almost regular contact. There was some days where it only went days in between these contacts. So two key findings. First of all, there are about 70 contacts between Trump Officials and the russians. Starting back when mieal cohen reached out to putin spokesperson about a trump about a building in moscow. And then going through the all of the other trump tower meetings and what not. But secondly, and this is something that hasnt been out there, 22 people in the campaign are documented to have known one way or another about those contacts which resonates when you consider the fact that from the beginning many officials were telling us that there were just no contacts. Eric swallwell who weve spoken about this, hes a democrat on the house intelligence committee. Let me just play for you what he said about this. The consequence of shutting the house intelligence investigation down today is we are inviting a russian attack this november. Not just a russian attack, but other countries with similar capabilities will look at this now as an unwillingness on the United States part to stand up against enemies who seek to attack us and call them out, to baton down the hatches and protect the ballot box and that is my big fear. We have an election coming up and were more vulnerable. So some people have a fear that not only is this giving the Trump Campaign and the president a pass but there is an underlying issue. And maybe they were involved in the campaign but it is really serious if they are involved in any campaign. And it is proliferating in terms of putin em boldened when you have him poisoning expats and his behavior is shown to be getting more aggressive that when he looks across the atlantic and sees that the president is cheering this what looks leek a partisan action because this is on a Party Line Vote and the democrats protesting that this could have severe ramifications when we know it is not just an attack on our election systems but also trying to get into our energy grid and that is it is becoming a national potential National Security crisis. And we should note that the Senate Intelligence Committee Investigation is being taken more seriously and they seem to be operating on a more bipartisan basis. Heidi, thank you. Hei heidi president bola. And coming up, a response to Mark Zuckerberg open to Government Protection and beefing updata users. And reaction from Roger Mcnamee and former mentor to Mark Zuckerberg. And the dow still in trouble zone here. You could see it is gone up and down if you look at the right side of the graph above the number 573 but that is 573 points and that is a drop of 2. 3 . And like i said, i get worried if we get to 2. 5 in the next half an hour but ill stay close to this and keep an eye on it for you. You are watching msnbc. Ill be right back. Well soon be hearing more from the whistleblowers at center of the fire storm over facebook and Cambridge Analytica. Christopher wylie said hes accepted invitations to testify before the house intelligence and Judiciary Committee and a parliamenty committee in the United Kingdom and claims that Cambridge Analytica which did the work for the Trump Campaign misused the data of some 50 million facebook users. He left Cambridge Analytica in 2014. Two years before the 2016 election. Cambridge analytica has dismissed the entertainment as, quote, a malicious attempt to hurt the company. It is clear he has a grudge to bear and set on trying to damage the company. Msnbc chief Legal Correspondent ari melber joins us because he has a new interview that airs tonight at 6 00 p. M. On his show the beat with ari melber. There is a group that you may know called the thrice and they have a song called whistleblower and it says im the bird that sings, im the whistleblower. You had me at thrice and whistleblowers do share and this is an interesting interview because this is the person who helped create those videos that just cost facebook 50 million and has Mark Zuckerberg and people and elsewhere talking about United States and the big question here of what cambridge knew and when they knew it given the criminal scrutiny and the interest in the Mueller Probe in, thisly release now here on your show something the whistleblower told me the full interview will air tonight as you mentioned, about how cambridge, trumps digital firm was warned during the campaign about what they were up to. Take a look. The company was warned that Alexander Nix should recuse himself of management duties in the company as ceo and they were also warned that the company shouldnt be sending foreign citizens to go and run american campaigns. They completely disregarded it. And i have the memo to prove it. He cites that memo weve been reporting on this as you know, it was Rudy Giulianis law firm that allegedly warned cambridge, trumps firm, to be careful about doing this because it might break the law. What is facebook is not sort of going after wylie on this but Cambridge Analytica really is. This is often the case with whistleblower, an attempt to undermine their credibility and from the business world, as i know, the frequent accusation is it is sour grapes. They are mad, they didnt get paid enough or promoted. They have some ax to grind. And i asked him about this and well air his response in full fairness. What i said to him is number one, there is the critique that you basically set up a video sting operation on your colleagues that something most people wouldnt like kindly on. And number two, was this an exception you caught them looking bad but maybe that is not how they always roll, if you will. And his answer was, when he discovered the depths of the unethical conduct that he said Cambridge Analytica and facebook allowed he felt a higher calling and taking tremendous personal risk. This is tremendous complication and tied to the president of the United States and number two, he said, and well air it tonight, he said, this was not an exception, this was business as usual at Cambridge Analytica which is the steve bannon trump relied on. And we have a big show and dont want to save it all for 6 00. I asked him about Mark Zuckerbergs responses and here is what he said about that. Well, lets see it. Prove it. If you are welcome to regulation, lets see what you propose. We regulate electric standards and water but dont regulate the thing most important which is our privacy and our data. They havent done anything. So i have to what else can i say than a failure. This is a catastrophic failure. That is his view. He said catastrophic failure and what is most striking and there is many debates to be had about facebooks growing role and responsibility here, but i thought it was important he told us and i can report this for the first time here on msnbc, he told us he continues to reach out to facebook and lawyers and offered to go help, to be a part of the solution. To go into meetings and get into the details constructively and said wow as of today facebook has not set up that meeting to really dig into the problem with him. That is one persons view and that is a whistleblower at the center of all of this. I would have thought facebook would grab that opportunity. Maybe they are writing the lawyer up to do is the right way. And that is interesting. And well talk about facebooks responsibility in a second with Roger Mcnamee. But katy tur asked me, how do you get ari to give you such good material because you drop some lyrics. As a lawyer, ive grown accustomed to not being amazed by trumps tweets but i was amazed by this new one where he said remember when they were saying during the campaign that donald trump is giving great speeches and drawing big crowds but hes spending much less money and not using social media as well as crooked hillarys large and highly sophisticated staff. Well not saying that any more. That strikes me as weird. Boasting about all of this. If i were in the midst of all of the Cambridge Analytica and facebook stuff, im not sure would you be bragging about it. Yeah, im of two minds on this. As someone who observed Many Political campaigns i think it is a mathematical fact that the Trump Campaign had good return on investment online and on tv what they call earned media, getting the press to talk about you rather th rather than payg for ad and that doesnt speak to the ethics or journalism of it. Why he would say that now, hes a master distractor and trying to flip it and get people having that debate. The more important debate as you know and as youve covered and will speak to mr. Mcniemi about is in the world where the internet is more important than anything else, where you ask the average american, i would say under 50 or of any age, would you be more worried about everybody getting into your phone or going through your bedroom drawer but i think in 2018 it is the phone. The law and regulations havent caught up and the companies who say theyre so good at everything, Mark Zuckerberg is telling everyone hes an expert as how to monetize and connect people and then any time they get caught and weve caught them on racial housing discrimination in the United States, weve caught them on fake news, weve caught them now on this scandal, every time they get caught, they say hey, man, you have no idea how complicated this is. We cant fix this overnight. It doesnt make sense because it is not true. Weve shown the evidence for that and this is an important conversation. Not an ideological information but it is an important conversation about society. Thank you and youve set up the conversation with roger macnma mcnamee very well. You could see the conversation tonight at 6 00 eastern on the beat with ari melber here on msnbc and the whole Cambridge Analytica situation has facebook facing key existential questions, how do you fix this . And maybe the better question is is that fix possible. Ill bring in rothn to roger the dow for a second. The dow would go more than 2. 5 and that is where we are. That is a 2. 5 gain. Ive told you this and youve watched me enough times to know that what im concerned about in the last half an hour of trading in the last 18 minutes, 17 minutes now is whether the down trend continues. It is fighting it a little bit. You could see every time it goes down and then goes up and it means there is some buyers who are okay at buying stock at this level but the problem is in about four hours asian markets will open and if they think were getting into a trade war or investors could trade stocks there think so, this could continue on overnight and go through asia and through europe and catch up to us in the morning and that is why im watching momentum and what is happening on the right side of the screen. Ill keep doing that. I want to bring roger in. He was an early mentor to Mark Zuckerberg and current investor in facebook and the cofounder of Elevation Partners. Lets just pick this up where ari left off, roger. This is now gotten to the core of what you have been on this show for months warning about. There will be a public reckoning about facebook and its responsibility with your information and how it gets news to you. Well so, ali, the first point is when chris wylie, the whistleblower tells you facebook has not embraced him or accepted his guidance for digging into this thing, that is precisely the same experience that i had in 2016 when i went to the them in october before the election and i continued for three months there after trying to get them to recognize there was a systemic problem with the Business Model and algorithm to allow bad actors to inflict harm across areas on innocent people. So im not surprised that they have not accepted the offer from wylie. But back then, they blew you off and if anybody else told them, they blew them off. And now the emperor has no clothes. Everything youve been on here telling be many facebook a company in which you were an early investor and continue to invest has come to be true. And much worse. Mark zuckerberg can sort of apologize and sort of say hes sorry around the edges. That wasnt a fullthroated, hey weve got a problem. It was worse than that. Because there were a couple of things he said. I cant believe i couldnt have imagined 2004 we were going to affect the elections. The reality is he couldnt imagine the day after the election that they affected the election. And that is clearly ridiculous. This company has published white papers on effectively they gave to various candidates to convince them to use facebook because facebook is such an effective way to persuade people in political campaigns. He said yesterday that he looked at all of this and couldnt imagine how somebody who had signed a document asserting that they had destroyed all of the data hadnt done so. At the very time that he had been ignoring the Consent Decree he signed with the federal trade commission. The whole thing was a bit unglued. And it makes me feel really sad because marks capable of much better than that. Hes a incredible entrepreneur with an amazing vision and facebook is a wonderful product and it doesnt have to be this way. So Washington Post said lets take a deep breath before the facebook breach of trust. Those that enter the ecosystem of social networking should not be shocked that information is being shared. What they should want is transparency in a robust Digital World that doesnt become a hidden surveillance state. What do you make of that. There is some part of buyer behave and unlike equifax that lost your information without any choice, with facebook you may not have known how to exercise your responsibility but you did have choice. Well i think in fairness, there are two points to make. The first is when facebook said you have the choice, it is a little bit like a magician doing a card trick. Facebook asserts you pick the friends and links you touch on but they forget to tell you is that of the millions of different posts they could show you. They pick the 20 in your news feed that best serve their Business Model. Which means things that are likely to provoke outrage in you. So they are like a magician doing a card trick. They are picking the things for you and giving you the impression that you have choice. But the second part of the problem with the Washington Post thing is i think that notion was relevant six or seven years ago. The problem is that facebook has consistently hidden the ball. Theyve consistently tried to make it appear that the openness that they had was somehow protected while they were largely ignoring the rights of consumers. Roger, good to talk to you. Thank you for really pushing this story out there, trying to get out ahead of it. Too bad facebook didnt listen. But maybe theyre still is a hope to fix this and get this right. Thank you for being the leader on this. Thank you. Roger is a cofounder of Elevation Partners and a early and current investor in facebook. The eye on the market. The dividing congress is a microcosm of whats going on around the country. This feeling of anger and mistrust between republicans and democrats is growing. In response, a Nonprofit Group called bettering is traveling across the country to help bring people together. Nbcs rehema ellis caught up with them in blooming ton, i understand i indiana and she joins me now. Reporter this is a group of people that want america to work. They came together as volunteers. Six republicans, six democrats, willing to sit down and talk guided by the better angels organizer. These participants were asked to listen and try to understand each other, not change minds. We were like the fly on the wall and just observed what often felt like an intensive and very massive marriage counseling session that went on the whole day. Were here to seek understanding. Reporter the day began with both sides listing the negative stereotypes they think the other has about them. We felt the stereo types for us that were racist, number one, stupid, uneducated, number two, fascist three. Antiimmigrant four. Cold hearted and uncaring five. Unpatriotic, socialists, baby killers, associated mainly with an h antireligion, antigun, and enabling takers. Reporter the group gathered in a different room to talk about why their policies are best for the country. I think that the red side protects our freedom and our independence better by being less regulated by government. Are there any examples that come to mind . Well, one would be the right to bear arms. I think that we have that right. I think that a lot of blue policies are designed to lift everybody up so that we can all be functioning well and contributing. Reporter they also voiced concerns they have about their own side. My side i think is far too willing to empower police and law enforcement. Thats very dangerous and, frankly, i think its unrepublican. I think sometimes blues tend to throw money at a problem as a solution. Reporter after the exercise and selfevaluation, the group gathered to discuss what they had in common. I think it was the militarystyle guns. I dont know other than law enforcement, why anybody would need to have that. You dont need an akwhatever to go shoot a deer. I get the sense of listening to the reds, what kept culling out to me was a sense of a deep, deep belief in fairness. So, who would like to share an action step with the whole group . Dick . Verify my facts. Question what im told by the people i hold in authority. And dont lie. To not rely on stereotypes to form an opinion. Be civil. Dont argue. And put yourself in their shoes. Reporter at the end of the sevenhour workshop, the presumptions republicans and democrats had about each other provided an opening to move forward. Okay. I think its hard to get things done as a country if were just trying to better ourselves over the other group and win. We have to take our own responsibility for the divide. Reporter so, americans, republicans and democrats have to come into rooms together and talk to each other . As scary as that sounds, yes. Reporter it was really fascinating. The thing that interested me was when they talked about they could not really agree on what were the facts. But they pledged they were going to try and access more unbiased sources of news so they could get up get to the real straight up and down truth of it all, if you will, ari. That might lead to less divisiveness. Lets hope. Rehema, thanks very much for that reporting. Rehema ellis. Hundreds of thousands of students are on the their way to d. C. For the march. Time magazine released this cover showing student activists from Marjory Stoneman douglas and the words enough the word enough i guess. Traveling with a group of those marchers who went from kentucky, she joins us from virginia 3 1 2 hours from d. C. Mariana, talk to me. Reporter ali, this is the last leg of our trip. Ill remind you we started at 6 00 in the morning in louisville, kentucky almost with two dozen students. This is the crew ive been driving with in mini vans on this tenhour journey we have taken you on here on msnbc. Its the last leg of the trip and i couldnt help but notice them reacting to that Time Magazine cover you referenced. Can i just ask you on behalf of the group, how do you feel having the parkland kids that inspired you to make this drive to washington on that cover today . Well, i think we all agree it is an incredibly power image. Seeing they are such young individuals, our age and on the cover of a magazine, some of the most important people in the history have been on. They made it so quickly onto the cover of this magazine. That is incredibly impactful. We also thought it was incredibly impactful how casual they look. It isnt a glamor shot. One student is barefoot, one is wearing a shirt. It is empowering to see people just like us on the magazine. Reporter they say just like us, ali, because they had a shooting in kentucky. They are motivated by parkland but also what happened at the high school. Final thought, is gun control an issue you are passion at about and you will continue to push for . It is. I definitely think especially now that its affecting High Schoolers and people like us, i think people our age have a right to go to school and without having to be afraid of being shot. Reporter thank you so much. Ali, on my half, a real privilege driving with these young people. Looking forward to our coverage on saturday. These are our future leaders. They are leading us in this very, very important conversation. Marianne a, i look forward to seeing you here in washington, d. C. Let me look at the markets again. They are fluctuating a lot. By the way, i should tell you we will be covering this. Were going to be here on saturday as well. The market is now off. The dow is now off 2. 8 , 697 points roughly. It was down much more than that. The number that im looking at there is 23,955. Were ten points higher than that right now. Thats correction territory. Once we drop below that, you are now in a correction, which is 10 off the 52week high. The other thing to remember is if you invested in the dow on january 1st as of right now youre off by about that percentage point, about 2. 8 . I will tell you if you look at the stocks that are lead thing downturn today, they are exactly the stocks that youd be worried about if you thought we were getting into a trade war and that American Companies that export overseas would be getting in trouble. Some of the worst performers on the dow right now, remember, there are only 30 stocks in the dow. Caterpillar among the worst. Boeing, General Electric, and nike. Caterpillar, boeing and General Electric are major, major exporters from this country. Nike is, too, but remember a lot of their products are made in china. So, they are getting it both ways. If china imports imposes trade restrictions on america, the caterpillars, the boeings and ges get affected. Imposing tariffs on things coming in from china, your running shoes, sneakers, a pappl get affected, too. I spend time telling people about the markets and not worry about normal fluctuations. 3 is not a normal fluctuation. This is a reaction to potential trade war. I wont see you until tomorrow 11 00 eastern, 8 00 a. M. And ill be back saturday morning. Thank you for watching. Deadline white house is up next. John heilman, its all yours. Hey, ali, i dont want to take it. I want to ask you a question. Youre freaking me out about how you say dont worry about the market but i should be scared, right, because of this correction . Im doing the math here. Ive lost im down to about 93 in my 401 k . I know you said its because of fears of a trade war. Is that it, not just the trade war, is there any other are there other elements of instability causing this downturn . Well, first of all this week we started because of facebook. Facebook is a big player. When Tech Companies think about being regulated, investors get spooked about that. That was the beginning of the week. The second part is this. The trade war. And then, you know, markets are not paying a whole lot of attention to politics these days. Theyve decided to sort of march on higher regardless of what goes on in washington. But i think this week with the lawsuits with the president , with the change of his legal team, you know, if youre already nervous about a few other things, that might be the cherry on the top to say im going to sit this one out. As you get
