Senator Lindsey Graham out with a stern message. And earlier today during some remarks during a conversation with the president of kazakhstan, the president was asked about his comments last week . Did you say you want more people coming from norway. Thank you very much. I want them to come in from everywhere. Everywhere. Thank you very much, everybody. Just caucasian or white countries, sir, or other petes of the world . Out. That was his response to that. Were also follow moving developments on russia today. The New York Times reporting that steve bannon was subpoenaed last week by robert mueller. This is according to a person with drejt nonof the matter. It comes the same day that bannon was on capitol hill attacking with members of the House Intelligence Committee. Lets go to jeff bennett. There is a lot going on today. What are we expected to hear in the next half our or so . On the issue of a potential immigration deal and a government shut down, expect her to continue to preemptively blame departments to demand any bill to fund the government includes protections for the 700,000 young undocumented immigrants known as the dreamers. The talks were derailed by the president s talks about haty and africanameric haiti and african nations. Sarah said she didnt think the president s comments really poisoned the well. He used strong language, he is passionate about it, he is not going to apologize for trying to fix our immigration system. He is committed to that and hopefully democrats will be, too. Hopefully today we can get clarity about what he tad, and also, he wants to remake the countrys immigration system. The president for his part was back writing this. The biggest loser will be our rapidly rebuilding military at a time when we need it more than ever. We need a merit based system of immigration and we need it now. No more dangerous lottery. The democrats say the burden is on President Trump to help break it stalemate, and we understand that Republican Leaders on the hill are trying to get another stopgap spending measure. If that effort goes south, the government would shut down and that marks a year since President Trumps inauguration. Thank you, i want to go on the topic you just left us on. Earlier today, kristin neilson was grilled by lawmakers about what was said on last thursdays meeting. You said on fox news the president used strong language, what was that . Apologies, i dont remember specifics, what i was struck with was the general pro fanty used in the room by almost everyone. The idea that the commander and chief of this country could with broad brushes talk about certain nations and cast a shadow over millions of americans from those communities, and that you can even say in your temperature that norwegians were preferenced by him because theyre so hard working well let me finish. Kacie hunt, this was a very interesting session this morning. We saw the secretary being grilled by democrats, and now snathders are saying that someone on the president s staff gave him the bad advice. The way he characterizes this is one president on tuesday and another on thursday. Yes, i will say it is an under statement to say that it strained many senators after the meeting. Clearly whatever happened on that thursday meeting in the white house was something that very clearly fostood out in the memories of people there. Certainly for Lindsey Graham and dick durbin. We have seen attempts to muddy the waters. I think one thing we have learned from the hearing, and i was surprised to see him take such a quick chanstance. He came out very forcefully today and had a message that he tried to send down the street to the other end of pennsylvania avenue. I think somebody on his staff gave him really bad advice between 10 00 to 12 00 on thursday. I think the president i saw on tuesday is the guy i play golf with. I like the guy. He is funny. I thought he commanded the room. And the conversation 10 00 on tuesday was familiar to thursday, and something happened, i like secretary neilson, shes a nice person so what was the series of events there . The 10 00 time that senator graham was referring to was a phone call that the president had with senator dick durbin. He believes durbins account of how that call went. And he felt positive about what the president said i spoke to him at 10 00 on thursday morning, i said we have a bipartisan agreement. He said great, i cant wait to hear what is going won it, and im not going to let the slow walkers take control. I was invited to come along, and in the next two hours, someone, i think i know who, decided they would bring in five members of congress, two senators and three house members that generally oppose all immigration reform. It was clearly to outnumber us and kill our efforts. The white house chief of staff, and the former department of Homeland Security secretary who is very interested in this issue, and the Washington Post as reporting about his involvement there. There has been involvement directed at steve miller, but i do think that the focus increasingly will be on kellys role in this. And it is not clear how they have come to a solution on this and how to fund the government. It is not even close. I find it hard to imagine were going to shut the government down on saturday, but something to keep on top of. Thank you, kacie hunt. For more on the New York Times report, steve bannon being subpoenaed, i want to bring in intelligence and National Security reporter, this is, just for people that have trouble following this, break it down. We know that bannon is talking to the House Intelligence Committee and this is entirely different. This investigation by muleel. We have no reason to ut doubt the truth of the system if is just a few days after his explosive comments to author michael wolff. I spoke to a source that said bannon talked his way into a subpoena with those comments and recalled talking about the trump tower meeting. And he also talked about how he believed that Money Laundering was crucial to this investigation, and i also spoebt to a source that said that bannon is a crucial witness in the obstruction of justice probe. He may have information about Donald Trumps state of mind in trying to protect mike flynn and firing james comey. For why a subpoena and not a voluntary interview, it is very common. Most witnesses do not come voluntarily in a criminal investigation to answer questions about sentive matters where the penalty for lying could be criminal. Usually a subpoena is typical. A fox news journalist tweeted about bannons meeting saying sources say bannon told by white house not to answer questions before house intel committee. They subpoena him during the meeting to comply while in the hearing. You have a white house response as well. Yeah, after that tweet we reached out for clarity. We have a statement here from Sarah Sanders. As with all congressional inquiries, Congress Must consult with the white house prior to obtaining confidential material. This is part of a judicially recognized process going back decades. We have full ongoing cooperativeness. In order to ensure that congress obtains information necessary to its legitimate interests. If he is being less forthcoming about his time working with the transition, and seven months at the white house is interesting because that is the time that congressional investigators are scrutinizing as they look for links between the campaign and russia. For more on this, i want to bring in a Senior Writer for news week who covers steve bannon extensively. Good to see you. The New York Times also reported that a subpoena is a sign that bannon is not the focus of the investigation. They allow them target investigations only in rare circumstances. Bannon was not involved in the meeting in june 2016 with the russian meeting. He wasnt in the room when the discussions about comey being fired were taking place. He is not the target here, but he was intimately familiar with the president s thinking in the transiti transition and in the first months after the white house. As we know from michael wolff, he thought a lot of what happened with comey and russia was incredibly poorly run on the part of the transition. Especially with jareds involvement and don juniors involvement. Me may reveal what he knows about what they did, especially don jr. Who took that meeting with him at trump tower. Ban non had a remarkably spectacular fall from grace in the last few weeks. From breitbart, from patrons and with the president , it may his opportunity to get back in everybodys good races. Now he has system in front of the house and a subpoena for the grand jury. If he is going to play any game at this point it has to be careful and coordinated. I think that bannon clearly has targets in the white house that are most likely jared and don jr. I dont think he wants to settle scores with the president because the president is the leader of the movement that ban non believes he is the father of. So i dont think he wants to torch trump. And white house knowing what was said to mueller and the grand jury, i believe that is probably where bannon is heading. He still has grievances, and i dont think he is going to mind saying some very frank and potentially very damaging things about people involved in the meets and june. The comey firing, and the potential obstruction of justice. Good to talk to you, thank you. A Senior Writer for news week. Right now the u. S. And canada are hosting top foreign officials so increase the pressure against north korea. It focuses on ways to baabandon their nuclear ambitions. They said it is more than nuclear war. The attempt to protect civilian aircraft is real. Individuals traveling from San Francisco to hong kong witnessed an icbm test going through the sky. Their willingness to launch missiles at any time is a threat. Those that fought against north korea in the korean war. Who wasnt on the list . China and russia. Joining me from the event is chief Foreign Affairs correspondent andrea mitchell, any likelihood of real work getting done here in vancouver . It is a remarkable gathering of 20 countries lead by the u. S. And canada, hosted by canada here in vancouver, to talk about what the options are and the cheating and how to increase the pressure. They have u. N. Sanctions that could be pretty effective, but theyre not as effective as they ought to be because of the cheating. And they have seen ship to ship transfers. What has to be done . Some kind of navel action is likely going to be authorized or at least contemplated. That is what theyre talking about here today among other things. The fact is that china and russia are not here and i asked that question of brian hooks about not including china and rub sha who have been very critical about this meeting. Here is what he had so say. This is not an alternative. We have been working pretty closely with them in this run up to vancouver. Everything sheer to better immaterial plemt t implement the sanctions. We want them tul do a better job immaterial plemting the security skankss theyre voting for, but were thankful overall for the regime that we built. Of course there is still a lot of leakage, and as you know, until they move in on some secondary sanctions against the banks in china the way they did against iran, that is the only way but that would mean really taking action, tough action against china. There are big disagreements about trade and how to handle north korea. Under the banner of preaching to the choir, this group of 20 are not generally the 20 companies when we talk about cheating and things getting through, that they really need to deal with it. So this is a coming together of countries on the right side of the issue, but the real pressure lies with russia and china. There is some discomfort. Over the fact that the south korean president is more eager for talks with north korea than the u. S. Has been. The administration said they have to earn their way back to talks. There is a back channel and they know what they have to do in order to earn their way back to the table because they cheated twice before under two administrations, president clinton and president george w bush. There are talks starting later tonight between north and south korea about the olympics. Could that lael to somethiead t more there. They are still technically at war. Were always indebted to you for your analysis. Thank you, andrea mitchell. He is distancing himself from the current commander and chief. He said his words are inconsistent with americas history and values. This all comes amid reports that romney is getting ready for a senate run in utah. When will you announce if youre going to run. I have nothing for you on that topic, im sorry. I sure had fun today speaking with the chamber and meeting people here. But people want you to run, so why not. Some do, im sure. When will you decide . I dont have anything for you on that topic today. Time will come, but not now. Sources tell nbc news its not a matter of f but when he will announce his campaign. Orin hatch announced he would retire. Should romney run, that would be another republican moderate voice and he would be in position to challenge trump for the nomination in 2020. Im joined my mindy finn who worked for the Romney Campaign and the george w. Bush campaign. Thank you for joining us. Absolutely, happy to be here. What do you think about this first of all . That she going to run to be the senator from juds . I expect that he will run for senate in utah. I hope that he does more importantly. I think what were seeing here is he is approaching this in a conservative and strategic way making sure his is are dotted and his t is crossed. Lets play this out ale bit more. There are lots of americans that dont care that much about the specifics, but theyre wondering what the implications are and you have run as a candidate in a national election, what does this mean . Say he runs to be senator . What does it mean for the Republican Party . Usually when someone comes into the senate, sometimes that is the platform to propel them on to the National Stage to give them a greater voice. Here in mitt romney you have someone that was a candid in 2012. While he will be a freshman senator, he will come in with a national profile, a greater force on the stage, and he will be able to have an impact on issues more than a typical senator, it is important on your typical policy issues on the economy, on immigration, on the issues that are being debated today, but even more importantly in this moment, were not just looking for somebody to balance a leftright balance in the senate, there needs to be a balance of someone in the Republican Party for someone that can speak to this time and stand for core american ideals like liberty and equality. Hi has conned tinued to do it ie last few years. He he a spoiler for trumps 2020 run . I dont know that it is about being a spoiler High Pressure he made his feelings clear. Donald trump is president now, machine mitt romney said he will work with the senate, but he is the antitrump, and that is important to see leaders and characters that are truly committed to their family that provide an example of leadership in this country who put the face they present to the world as one that question be proud of. Many americans are, a majority of americans are clambering for that kind of leader right now and thats just how i expect him to be just like he has been, and in that way he will be the antitrump. He will not be oppositional, but he will stand for core values of liberty and equality, and he will be able to do that in an authentic way. Thank you, mindy, director of digital strategy. All right, coming up next, that. The white house Briefing Room, well bring you the results of the president s physical exam and the press briefing with Sarah Sanders. Due to happen any minute. As a physician to the president , he earned the trust and confidence of president s from differing parties. He trained under a physician that did the same and then trained dr. Ronny jackson, the current physician of the president who has the trust and confidence from both partied. He says i hired and trained dr. R ronny. After all, they personally selected him to be their information. Today, dr. Jackson will offer his professional assessment of the president s medical fitness for duty. He conducted the first exam as president of the united states. Having had the opportunity to review the tests, consult specialists, and discuss them he will provide us with his considered assessment of the president s medical fitness for duty now and the remainder of his term for office. Knowing dr. Jackson, im confident that he practiced good medicine. But in practice, it is an ongoing process. Far more important to a meaningful assessment of the president s fitness for due it is his observations, interactions, and conversations and exam in addition in the remaining 364 days of the year. They have been doing that since the moment Donald J Trump was elected. Members of the white house medical community started to shadow the unit that was figuratively vel koeed to his side. It is one of only very few in the white house residence proper and is directly across the paul from the president s elevator. He is generally the first and last to see the president. He is built and leads an Organization Better than any other in history. I know that, i as physician to the president was well served by this president s doctor. More importantly, president and ms. Bush were real served by dr. Jackson and was president and first lady obama. Thank you dr. Richard tub for that background and information. With thatly turn it over to dr. Jackson and as always, if you could, please keep your questions on topic. And after dr. Jackson finishes i will come back to address more questions of the day. Good afternoon, everyone. Im going to read the summary of the petresidents physical. After this i will make it available to everyone as i have read it here and i will take a few questions. Starting with donald j. The president is currently up to date on all recommended and preventive medicine, screening tests, and exams. He is currently very healthy and will remain so for the duration of his presidency. Okay, with that i will take some questions. Before we get started let me make a comment. I would like to point out for all of you here in the room, many of which of you know many, if something should happen in the next few months and you fall ill at some point, i will like i will be called to come take care of you, when you ask questioning, please keep that in mind. How much weight have you suggested the president s lose, and he has not exactly been enthusiastic about exercising. He believes we all have a finite battery, why waste it on exercise, what did you council him about that . That is right, so i think the president , we have talked and he would like to lose 10 to 15 pounds in the next year or so. We talk about diet and exercise a lot. He is more enthusiastic about diet than exercise, but well do both. Well Work Together in the next year to incorporate a good plan so that we can meet those goals. Thank you, two questions for you. Number one, questions as part of your example, the president s Mental Fitness, he has pushed back on that, can you assess his Mental Fitness for office . Absolutely. We did do a cognitive assessment as part of the exam. I did not intend to include that, per all of the guidelines out there, its not indicated at this time. A lot of the guidelines suggest that you do cognitive screening questions, and if you have a positive or concerns answer then you engage with a cognitive screening tool. I didnt feel i needed to do that because i did not feel it was clinically indicated. I have spent almost every day in his presence since last year when he got into office, i have seen him every day, seen him up to three times a day because of the location of my office, we have conversations about many things, most dont resolve around medical issues at all, but i got to know him. I had no concerned about his cognitive ability or his, you know, his neurological function. So i was not going to do a cognitive example. The reason we did the cognitive assessment is the president asked me to do it. He said is there something we can do, a test or screen to assess my cognitive ability . So i looked into it and my initial question was that i didnt think it was indicated or we should do it. There are a few guidelines out there that lean in the direction of potentially doing it. The medicare guidelines and some of the Nih National Institute of ages. But with that in mind, i went through and looked at a variety of cognitive assessments. Most are simple and short and this is the goal for primary care providers to keep it simple and short. We picked one that was longer and more involved. It was more difficult, but the president did exceedingly well on it. That was not driven by any clin kal concerns i have. It was driven by the president s issues. He said he would be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency, do you agree with that assessment . Im not going to comment on that, my job is to give you my assessment of President Trump today and i will not make any comparisons with the president s in the last 200 years. There was a incident recently where the president appeared to slur his words while giving an address. Did you look into the what the cause of that might have been. We talked about that, and actually one of my consultants was evolved in that. We checked everything out and everything was normal. We even did an ultrasound of his glands, and there was no clinical findings. I think the reason nar wafor th needing a drink of water. I had given him sudafed in the prior days and it may have dried him up a little bit. My wife suffers from that, is that a concern Going Forward for him . That in some cases indicates lowtivilow activity. No, that is a normal fraction. And the cholesterol, do you hope to get it under 200 . Were not focusing on the total as much as we are the ldl. We would like to get the ldl down below 120. And the pleasure was within norms, but with the high cholester cholesterol, any concerns for heart health . Not at all. There are many good things that came from his example. He had great findings across the board. The one that stands out to me more than anything is his cardiac health. I think that with all of the other things in place, he doesnt have a Family History of premature cardiac disease. He doesnt smoke or have diabetes. Those things in combination with the excellent cardiac results are very reassuring. Thank you, could you elaborate in leimens terms of what you ruled out in these tests. There is reports he has forgotten names or is repeating himself. Are you ruling out things like early onset dementialike symptoms . A second question, a lot of doctors at the back end of the physical like to give their patients tips before they walk out the door, things they should change in terms of lifestyle and behavior. What did you tell the president outside of diet he might want to change . I think the cognitive test, you know, its well respected. Its its a test that used, you know, throughout the united states. Lots and lots of institutions use that test. Its the one they use at walter reed for patients that they feel like they need to do cognitive screens on, so its a universally accepted test. Like i said, its a little bit more extensive than some of the shorter ones that are in some of the guidelines, but, yeah, it screens for all those things. It screens for any type of cognitive issues. Alzheimers, all those other things. The fact that the president got, you know, 30 out of 30 on that exam, theres no indication whatsoever he has any cognitive issues. On a daytoday basis like i said before, its been my experience the president , hes very sharp. You know, hes very articulate when he speaks to me. You know, ive never known him to repeat himself, you know, around me. He says what hes got to say and speaks his mind. And ive found no reason whatsoever to think that the president has does he yeah, i found no reason whatsoever to think the president has any issues whatsoever with his thought process. And the tips part, did you recommend he make any changes, lifestyle, behavioral no, not really. I mean, i think the main thing that we focused on with regards to Lifestyle Changes are diet and exercise. And, you know, if we get diet and exercise right, then weight loss will come. Those are the things that we focused on. I think that there wasnt a lot to go on here. You know, as far as giving, you know, making him healthier in the year coming. Other than incorporating an exercise routine, working on his diet, having him exercise. Those things will make him much re healthier than he is now although his health is excellent right now. Dr. Gupta, you want to answer one or there were extensive tests including a scan of his chest transthoracic. Did he need to be sedated at all, there was anything you were concerned about in the ct scan . Not at all. We got the ct scan because we were debating. I didnt have Background Information on him at all from a pulmonary stand poichbt, didnt have old chest sprays to look at oar anything like that. I was going to initially get a chest spray and be done with it. Its easy nowadays to whip in, takes a minute or two, about as much time to get a cat scan as it does to get a chest spray and give you information about other structures in the chest. With regards to the ecocardiogram, one of the reasons i did that because i wanted to prescribe an exercise program for the president. So i think that, you know, it makes sense to get a good cardiac assessment in a controlled environment like the hospital before you prescribe an exercise program to a patient. So that was my thinking there. He doesnt have heart disease, is that what you said . He doesnt have heart disease. Did he have a ct scan before that showed calcium in his coronary blood vessels . He does, he did. Technically, he has nonclinical co coronary he had a coronary calcium score done in 2009. It was 34. He had a coronary calcium score done in 2013 that was 98. Then we did get a calcium score from this one. I didnt mention it because i think its it was clinically good information. It wasnt but it was 133. So i had a long conversation with the cardiologist. Not only the cardiologist at walter reed, but the cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic and several other wellknown institutions, and everyone saw that as reassuring that hes gone this period of time and hes had that much or that little of a change in his coronary calcium load. So i think overall, his coronary calcium score is very reassuring and goes along with the rest of his cardiac workup. Doctor, i want to ask a question, follow up on something, philosophy, fitness of the president. Yes. The 25th amendment, a lot of people in the country have been talking about it, it basically contemplates a group of senateconfirmed laymen will y weigh in on whether the president is able to discharge the duties of the office. You have certainly given them some thought over the years that youve been in your role. On what basis would you, this is just a philosophical question, advise the cabinet the president is unable to discharge his duties . How is that met . Well, i mean, you know, section 4 of the of that amendment doesnt really, you know, give me a specific duty or role in there. Like you said, it falls upon the cabinet and the members of congress in all. You know, i think im just like any other member of the administration who sees him and talks to him on a regular basis. If i were to see something that was very concerning and i had concerns about his cognitive ability or something to that exteche extent, that i would bring that up to the proper people in the chain of command. Maybe starting off with the chief of staff or something and, you know, i think thats what everyone else in the administration would do. So i dont think my role as a physician would be much different than any other member of the president S Administration if they thought Something Like that were going on. I just think that, you know, once that happened, if it were someone else in the administration, i would immediately be brought into it to make the clinical assessment, see if i agreed with that assessment. But, you know, i mean, i think, you know, at this particular point, you know, based on my exam, you know, and, you know, the cognitive testing that we did and just my daytoday interactions with the president , you know, the president is mentally very, very sharp, very intact. Do you believe he is fit for duty . Absolutely. Hes fit for duty. I think he will remain fit for duty for the remainder of this term and even for the remainder of another term if hes elected. Dr. Jackson, you talked a bit about President Trump and your kind of daily dealings with him. Hang on. Did you say how can you determine that for the whole you cant determine it four years out, right . Absolutely. I dont have a crystal ball. I cant look into it, but based on his cardiac assessment, you can make predictions, you know, you can you can make cardiac calculations and see what his risk of having a cardiac or a cerebral vascular event might be. If you look at that stuff where he falls o ut on his cardiac assessment, he falls into a category that portends, you know, years of, you know, of eventfree, you know, living, so, i mean, sure, you know, i, myself, could have a big event tomorrow. I mean, i dont have that kind of im not making that kind of prediction. Im saying based on the clinical information that i have right now over the year of me on serving him and the few things that have happened with him medically over the year and in large part on the objective data that we gained from this particular exam, i feel very confident that he has a very strong and a very probable possibility of making it completely through his presidency with no serious medical issues. Dr. Jackson yes, im sorry. So you talked about dealing with President Trump on a daily basis. Can you talk a bit about him as a patient, like what type of patient he is. Does he take all of your advice, and you also talked about since you were dealing with him on a daily basis, has he had any ongoing ailments or anything like that, talked about giving him sudafed, sometimes it sounds like he has the sniffles when hes talking. Does he have any allergies or anything like that . He does. On occasion he suffers from the same, you know, viral, you know, upper respiratory stuff you and i do and gets congestion and things of that nature. For the most part, you know, one of the things i found about President Trump is hes very independent when it comes to his medical stuff so hes i guess, you know, the way he grew up, i guess, he just takes care of most of the little stuff himself. He doesnt come to me for bandaids and things of that nature, you know, and, you know, im easily accessible. You know, a lot of folks will. So, you know, i think, you know, he hes a good patient. Hes sometimes, you know, have to convince him why i want him to do something so, you know, he doesnt just take everything i say and just, you know, just take it, you know, face value and move on. Hell ask me questions about why would i do that, why should i do that . This, that and the other. For the most part hes very cooperative. He follows medical direction. Hes just like every other president identify takve taken occasion. Have to get the first lady involved to make sure hes doing what hes supposed to be doing. Yeah, hes a good patient. Just to make sure were clear on this, when you analyzed his cognitive ability, neurological functions, thats not the same thing as a psychiatric exam or psychological it is not. Its a screening assessment for cognitive impairment. Yeah. Right. Dr. Jackson, does the president do anything at all right now in terms of exercise . What is his daily exercise routine, if there is one . So i would say right now on a daytoday basis, he doesnt have a dedicated, defined exercise program, and so that, you know, thats what im working on. The good part is that, you know, we can we can build on that pretty easily. So so you said you were discussing that with him. What are you discussing, what would you like to see him start doing . Well, i mean, like i said, he doesnt have a daily exercise, you know, regimen. Some people exercise, some people dont. Some people, you know, just didnt, you know, didnt, you know, havent done thats, you know, as part of their routine. I would say thats the category he falls in right now. I would say, though, you know, despite that, one of the things, being with the president on a daytoday basis thats been impressive to me, he has a lot of energy. A lot of energy and a lot of stamina. And i think i first noticed that, you know, we traveled, did some overseas travel last year, and i was really surprised because i didnt know the president early on, you know, when the days wed get these 14, 16hour days, and the staff is just spent after a while and youre just like, man, when are we going to the hotel, when are we going down . You have all the issues of different time zones and things of that nature, too. I tell you, out of everybody there, the president had more stamina and more energy than anybody there. He was the one who was always like, were not going to skip this event, were going to do this, were going to do that, and stick to the schedule despite the urging of some us to lets just forget the rest of the day. Can you explain how a guy who eats mcdonalds, all the diet cokes and never exercises is in as good of shape as you say hes in . Its called genetics. People have great genes. I told the president if he had a healthier diet over the last 20 years, he might live to be 200 years old
