Hour. Ill see you back at 5 00 for meet the press daily. Chris jansing takes over. Im Chris Jansing in for ali velshi. Look at the white house where at this moment the president is welcoming the champion Pittsburgh Penguins. The visit comes on a day when the president seems to be feuding with just about everyone around him. Fill in the blanks. Senator bob corker. The president back to name calling referred to bob corker as liddle bob corker, with two ds. And Rex Tillerson, openly challenging the secretary of state to an iq test after the report that tillerson called the president a moron. The president telling Forbes Magazine i think its fake news but if he did that i guess we will have to compare iq tests and i can tell you who is going to win. Did you undercut the secretary of state today with the iq comment. No, i didnt undercut anybody. I dont believe in undercutting anybody. Thank you very much. You see him there with henry kissinger. Sarah Huckabee Sanders forced to answer questions about the feud. We have got it all for you. Garrett haake is in South Carolina with Lindsey Graham someone who also feuded with the president from time to time. So, sarah Huckabee Sanders made it seem like everything is fine between the president and the secretary of state. To hear him tell the story, he never unt cuts anybody and he is not fighting with anyone. Why this disconnect. Also, Rex Tillerson is really, really smart. The disconnect comes from what you are hearing from folks who are close to the president and the secretary of state privately and then sort the front that is put forward in situations like for example, this press briefing here. When you look at the questions that sarah Huckabee Sanders got. Remember, this was the first Briefing Since the sort of weekend of headlines, you could say on not just Rex Tillerson but bob corker as well. The press secretary taking questions on both of that. Lets start with tillerson. That is significant. Both had come from a lunch. The secretary had just come in. We saw him leave as well. Heres what sarah Huckabee Sanders says about the comment that president made to Forbes Magazine about potentially having an iq test with his secretary of state and alluding to who he thinks would win. Listen. The president certainly never implied that the secretary of state was not incredibly intelligent. He made a joke. Nothing more than that he has full confidence he has full confidence in the secretary of state of they had a great visit earlier today and they are working hand in hand to move the president s agenda forward. This is important because its not just about permits here. Its also about the poll see. You heard one of the questions Sarah Sanders got and as we have been reporting relates to the president expected to dessertified the Iran Nuclear Deal and kick that over to congress. You have got serious consideration about what is happening with north korea right now. When you look at what the defense secretary jim mattis has said and what the president treat tweeted over the weekend. He he also said he wishes the secretary of states with tougher, too. There is not only question about permit but how it relates back to poll see. I think you saw frustration from Sarah Sanders in this briefing talking about the idea this irk q riff was a joke and flipping it on on the reporters saying hey the president has a good sense of humor, i wish you would have a good sense of humor, too, take a page out of that boovlg ill leave it there. Lesson learned. Okay. Meantime, again, somebody i said that the president has obviously gone back and forth with, who is senator graham, met with the president yesterday. Garrett, whats his take on the back and forth with corker, who graham frankly is Close Friends with . What did he tell you . Well, its interesting. You mentioned that listen satisfy graham is somebody who has had his own back and forth with the president in the past and he was out on the links yesterday playing 18 holes trying to smooth that over and find places where they can Work Together on policy. Largely that was the message he said he tried to deliver to the president while they were out playing golf and subsequently was saying look you may not like what bob corker is saying about you, but you very much need him to get things done. At the end of the day, especially when 2020 rolls around people arent going to vote for you because you successfully twitter smacked down some republican senator. They are going to vote for you based on poll see. Heres part what have graham said he told the president. Most americans probably dont know who bob corker is. Most americans dont care what he thinks of you, and frankly most americans probably dont care what you think of him. They do care about their family security, their economic wellbeing. And i dont think it helps any of us to continue this. I like them both. I respect bob corker. And then bob corker is central to both of those, the economic and sort of physical security things that the white house is pushing on the hill. Hes going to be a critical vote on anything on tax reform. And oirks by the way hes the chairman of the Foreign Affairs committee on the senate. Anything with iran or north korea or if they do need another secretary of state for some reason down the line that is going to go in front his committee. This is a relationship that needs repair for this white house. Gard headache, and hallee jackson thank to both of you. As crisis and controversy continue to surround the president from natural disasters to battles battles of his own making new reports today that his patience is wane. The Washington Post spoke about 18 white house officials outside advisors and other Trump Associates who patient a picture of a situation thats a Pressure Cooker in the west wing and say its only a matter time before it could blow. Joining me now is one of the authors of that article, ashley parker. Its not like controversy and crisis are new to this white house. What is behind this i guess what seems to be an escalating frustration on the part of the president . Sure. Its that the president , people close to him told us is frustrated on a be in of different fronts. He is frustrated as you talked about with senator corker. Frustrated with his secretary of state Rex Tillerson. I know he is at the white house but that relationship is not particularly strong. It wasnt been strong for a while. He is frustrated by the media who is not giving him the credit he thinks he did he evers for his handling of three successive hurricanes. And he is also dealing with another war in some ways with steve bannon, former chief strategist who now on the outside is on the outside beginning up his base and going against the establishment and the president is upset and nagging at him because he endorsed a traditional republican in the Alabama Senate primary and he didnt win. It is incoming on all fronts for this president. You are not saying he is upset with steve bannon. He is upset with the fact he and bannon went head to head and he picked the wrong guy . I think hes upset that showed him you are exactly right. It is not specifically between him and steve bannon but he is upset that he is seeing his base, as he calls them my people are not necessarily always going to be with him. And these are the people who lifted him to victory and who he will need going forward. He is acutely aware of this. There are those who think the foul mood may be about john kelly, the chief of staff brought in to bring order to the white house to the extent he could put procedures in place. He has done that. There is not this constant in and out of anybody who wants to drop in on the west wing. Is that making him feel boxed in . I should be clear that the president by all accounts likes general kelly personally. But you are right, there are inherent tensions in that relationship. And he misses in some ways sort of the early days of the white house. This is a president who is used to sort of thriving and flourishing in chaos. What general kelly did is his friends cant just call him anymore. They cant just drop by the white house when they are in washington and have an hour to kill of it does make him feel isolated and he misses that wanter and chatter while while it was sometimes problematic in term of governing it was fun for him. Ashley parker thank you. Another thing we have heard that frustrated the president he doesnt feel he gets enough credit for the things he has been doing to keep promises to his base. Case in point, president obamas policy to curb carbon gas emissions that contribute to Global Warming now on chopping block. Just a short time ago, the epa beated this we have issued a notice of proposed rule making proposing to repeal the Clean Power Plan. As scott putin said monday before a group of coal miners he would sign off on this proposed rule he is effectively killing the clean power act. It will be likely challenged in court. Laura kelly suffer from severe asthma something she attributes in part from air pollution from power plant emissions. She is now with the American Lung association. Good of you to take the time to talk at that us. What is your reaction when you hear about if plan to roll back what president obama did . First for the viewers who have never experienced an asthma attack i would like to take a minute to have them imagine how they would feel to watch their child struggle to stay afloat in the deepen of a Swimming Pool knowing you cannot jump in to save him. And thats how helpless us parents feel who have children with asthma every time they have an attack. There is no greater love than the love you feel for your children. I know firsthand what its like to live in an area with dirty air. And i have seen my children, after our relocation, thrive, and lead wolf qualities of life. This noose makes me sad. It makes me angry. And it makes me even more inspired to do what i can to make it better for all children with asthma in our country. You stood with the former president , actually. You were there. You stood there when he announced this Clean Power Plan. Uhhuh. And you mentioned that you had a relocation. But for families like yours i hope you can speak to this as ana volunteer with the American Lung association, have you seen changes . What has it meant for families like yours . For families like mine, we were fortunate that we were able to relocate. But there are many families that do not have that option. And so the Clean Power Plan is a way to make it better for those families that do not have the option to relocate. Any time that we can reduce pollution from power plants, those benefits are real. Any time we can prevent even one asthma attack for one family, for one child, thats one less trip to the emergency room. Its one less missed day of school. And its a wonderful, wonderful policy thats in place to protect our air. The bottom line is, pollution from power plants kills. And the Clean Power Plan is going to save lives. Period. Laura kellogg, mother of three children with severe asthma and a volunteer with the American Lung association thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us. Thank you, chris. Also joining me now, Christie Todd whitman who man the e. P. A. Under george w. Bush from 2001 to 2003, she wrote an op ed titled how not to run the e. P. A. We will get to that in a moment. Whats your take on the roll back of the Clean Power Plan . The good news is you dont do away with it with a wave of the wand. This is a rule making process. Its going to take time. They have to propose an alternative rule. They have to justify the science, which means the original finding that carbon was something bad for human health, why that no longer applies. Tell us about a better way to do it. They will get masses of comments. Then they have to answer the comments. The bad news is they are continuing on the path of rolling back, slow waug any enforcement of the regulations that we have in place. And they are going to make it much more difficult to move the utilities along where they need to be. It is a bait and switch. Its had the going to bring back coal. Thats the dirty little secret. Do you think they believe this is an economic necessity . Do you think they dont believe in Global Warming . What do you think is behind this . They certainly dont believe in Global Warming. They see this its easy to say that it is a zero sum gain, that if you protect the environment, you cant have a healthy thriving economy. Thats just wrong. We have proven that over again over the years with more people using more energy watching our gdp grow from 2005 to 2010. And seeing reduction of the six worst air pollutants by over 67 . We can grow the economy with more people using more power. The problem here is that you are also rolling back regulations. They rolled back regulations on the safe water act that allows the companies now the mining companies, the coal mining companies, to put their tailings right on the rivers. Thats not going to bring back coal. Coal is going because of the low price of natural gas. What it is going to do is jeopardize the lives of those who leif in the valleys. Scott pruitt was state attorney general who led the charge when several states fought this plan in the first place. This is a promise that the president made. For people out there who are concerned, is there any reason to take heart . Well, again, because you cant just do it overnight, and frankly, the horse is out of the barn in many senses because you have a number of the states who made commitments and they are moving ahead. You have a number of major cities that said no we understand this problem and we are going to move ahead. Then you have corporations who made a commitment to reduce their carbon footprint. And they are moving ahead because the rest of the world is going there. What its doing is putting us hyped the curb. We are not investing in the new technologies that are going to move us. Thanks for coming in. Appreciate it. Up next, state of emergency. Fastmoving wildfires in californias wine country that have left more than 200 people missing, more than 20,000 in the path of the infernos have had to flee their homes. We will take you there live after the break. Its horrible. I i couldnt stay because i couldnt breathe. All our pictures are gone. Everything. Everythings gone. These guys dont want to be politicians. They shouldnt be. Dont be a politician. [ applause ] phil led the team in assists although i hear his sister amanda may be the best hockey player in the family. Is that possible . You know what, i doubt it. Okay . But i hear shes really good. Matt murray stewarded 32 wins as goal tender and is the first goalie in League History to win the stanley cup championship game in each of his first two years. Where is matt . [ cheers and applause ] i assume you have very good reelecti reelections, right . Have you had good reflexes from day one . [ inaudible ]. You better have, right way to go matt. Despiting with sidelined to injury, kris letang used his experience to help younger players where is kris . Where is kris . You look pretty young what do you mean younger players . Do they get younger than you . You look fantastic. Thank you. Handsome group of people. In fact, i dont like i dont like standing in front of them. First thing you know, we always like unattractive teams, right . And devised strategies that spurred the penns on to a really incredible victory. Im pleased to report that the tanger right . Tanger is healthy and back on the ice this season, where he belongs. Its going on tto be a great se for you. Yet many of the players really might agree that the biggest mvps was your incredible, loyal fans. [ cheers and applause ] the penns faithful packed the arenas for every single game cheering pittsburghs boys of winter all the way. Great, great fans. Great state. Great place. In fact, every one of the penguins home games for the past ten straight years has been very much to ron birkels happiness sold out, right ron . Sold out. So while you are dominant on the ice, the heart of the organization and its commitment to pittsburgh shines just as brightly off the ice. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Supports a number of great causes serving young people. Over a Million Dollars in grants were awarded to local charities last season. The annual food drive distributes thousands and thousands of pounds of food, and tens of thousands of dollars to local Community Food banks. Since 2010, the Pittsburgh Penguins foundation has also worked with the university of pittsburgh medical centers Sports Medicine to combat concussions in young athletes. Just last week the penns pledges two donations of 25,000 each toward relief efforts in puerto rico in its support of the victims and the First Responders of the terrible attack in las vegas. They have worked so hard. The police, the First Responders, for everything. Whether it was in texas or in florida or louisiana or puerto rico or the u. S. Virgin islands or that horrible horrible situation caused by a very demented, sick person in las vegas. The police, every one of them, First Responders, they have been incredible. They have been absolutely incredible. So we should give them a hand. Okay . [ applause ] just as much as your five stanley cup wins, your generosity has shown the true character of this incredible organization. You are true, true champions, and incredible patriots. God bless you, and god bless the United States of america fantastic. [ cheers and applause ]. Thank you very much, congratulations. President of the United States with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the nhl champion, putting in a little plug for his renegotiation of nafta, but also mentioning the tragedy that happened in las vegas, also the wildfires. We are going to have a report on whats going on in california in a short time. He said he spoke with governor jerry browne a short time ago. We want to bring you upto date on a story that keeps getting more expansive. Now Angenlina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow have become today the latest stars to accuse hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. Gal troe reported she feared she would be fired early in her career if she refused to join him in a bedroom for massages. And Angenlina Jolie said she had a bad experience with him in the 90s when he made advances in a hotel room. Those follow reports in the hollywood roarker that includes case of rape. The piece by Ronan Ferrell and rooeds quote three actresses told me that weinstein raped them, allegations that include wipts forcibly prm performing or receiving oral sex and forcing vaginal sex. Four women said they experienced unwanted touching that could be classified as an assault. The new yorker piece includes secretly recorded audio obtained by a police sting, in it weinstein pressures women into going into a hotel room and seems to acknowledge previously touching her breast. Im telling you right now. What do we have to do here. Nothing. You sit there and have a drink. Can i stay on the bar. No, you must come now. No. Please. Im not doing anything with you. Now you are embarrassing me. Im sorry. It was aggressive for me. I need to know a person to be touched. I wont do a thing. I swear i wont. Just sit with he moo. Dont embarrass me in the hotel. Sit with me. I dont want to. Please sit there. For one minute. Go to the bathroom. I dont want to do something i dont want to do. I want to go downstairs. I am not going to do anything. You are not going the see me after this if you embarrass me. Im not embarrassing you. I dont feel comfortable. Dont have a fight with me. Im not going to do anything. I swear on my children. I am a famous guy. Im feeling uncomfortable. Come in now, to for one minute. Why yesterday you temperature my brees. Please im sorry. Come on im used to that. You are used to that. Yes, come in. No, but im not used to that. I wont do it again. Come on. Sit here for a bit. Please. No, i dont want to. If you do this now if you dont, never call me again. I promised you i wouldnt do anything. I know but yesterday was the much. I will never do another thing to you, five minutes of dont ruin your friendship with me for five minutes. I know, but its too much for me, i cant. Please you are making a big scene. No, but i want to leave. Okay. Fine. Thank you. No charges were filed in that case n. Response to the new yorker piece, weinstein spokesperson says any allegations of nonconsensual sex are unequivocally denied by mr. Weinstein. Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed there were never any acts of realtation against any women for refusing his advances. Mr. Wipts cant speak to anonymous allegations but with respect to any women who maid allegations on the record mr. Weinstein believes all of these relationships were consensual. Mr. Weinstein has begun counselling, has listened to the community and is pursuing a better path. Mr. Weinstein is hoping that if he makes enough progress he will be given a second chance. With me now, msnbc legal analyst, danny is a vallos. Harvey twints has lost his job, and you are hearing growing allegations against him, the details, and now we have heard at least one audio tape. Listening to that audio tape, i agree with the Manhattan District Attorney that there wasnt enough information to make a charge. Even under the lightest, the least severe Sexual Assault type crime, groping without someones consent, touching without consend, there has to be an intentional act. If you listen to the language, as a defense its possible that he would say, it was incidental, it was accidental that i touched her. Or he could still argue consent or that it never happened at all. The tape itself doesnt establish at least to the satisfaction of a prosecutor or a new york detective that they would meet that beyond a reasonable doubt standard for criminal charges. Is there strength in numbers. One thing that strikes you when you read ronans story. I interviewed a woman yesterday who found herself on the unwanted end she said of mr. Weinsteins reprehensible behavior. Is there something that can be done if women get together . Is there something, a pattern that is strong in court . Give us a sense. There is a lot of anger building among a lot of people that this weapon unpunished for such long time. And if it can be shown that these things did happen, is there any real resource besides im going to get money from him . First there is strength in numbers. The law simply doesnt incentivize a Single Person coming forward or joining in you know there is talk about why didnt other people get involved . If you decide to be a whistle blower the law isnt that protective. Now you are a witness and now you may be subjected to defamation claims maybe not for testifying in court but for even saying anything. Or another witness might have a nondisparagement or a confidentiality agreement. The law doesnt incentivize people coming forward until masses of people come forward. We did again hear in the reporting, people should read the new yorker article that people were afraid that he was going to retaliate, he had a lot of money, had a lot of lawyers that he could take legal action against them. Gloria allred, obviously wellknown lawyer in many kinds of cases involving women, mentioned the statute of limitations at a press conference she held 678 heres what she had to say. A number of accusers have contacted me about their allegations but i had to inform them that the statute of limitations, that arbitrary time period set by law has expired and its therefore too laid for them to assert a legal claim. Mr. Weinstein could however decide that he would like to resolve these allegations and wave and agree not to assert the statute of limitations. There is also obviously deals that were made. Some of the women have said that they have a settlement with him and they took money with that probably or possibly stop them from taking any legal action . Possibly. These nondisparagement confidentiality agreements and clauses are effective in preventing a former employee from going to the paper or whiting a letter to somebody or suing their old employer. But they simply are no match for a court order or a subpoena. And the language the standard language that you find in these clauses will say as much. You cannot disparage. Everything is confidential unless and until a court says otherwise. When Gloria Allred talks about the statute of limitations i understand her frustration. The trend has been to expand the criminal statute of limitations for sexual crimes. But in civil actions the statute of limitations remains very small. You have in california for example, a year to file a charge. And then a year after a state agency dismisses that charge. Compare that to the newly minted unlimited statute of limitations for sex crimes committed after 2017 in california. Danny thank you so much. I dont think we have heard the last of this. Appreciate it. You have just saw the president hosting the stanley cup champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins at the white house. And sports does seem to be top of mine for the president as of late. He took to twitter this morning to slam seen in host jamell hill who made headlines when she took to twitter commenting on jerry jones the players who disrespect the flag wont play. She tweeted, this play always work. Change happens when dont place the burden squarely on the players. As we told you yesterday, espn suspended hill for two weeks saying its her second violation of their social media 2k3w50id lines. To talk about this im joined by host of bing worthy and an msnbc contributor. The nfl released a letter to onus about plans to address what to do about players and the National Anthem but they made it clear how they feel. Commissioner Roger Goodell writes in part like many of our fans we believe that everyone should stand for the National Anthem, stand. It is an important moment in our game we want to honor our flag and our country and our fans except that of us. He says they have a plan and will werent it next week. Where do you make of where this is all right now . I think that some folks in the conversation are not taking seriously enough how deeply important this issue is to the players and jamell and the other folks who are speaking out. Their general message is stop killing us. The white houses general message is, shut up. We dont want to address your issue at all. And now espn has suspended jamell, who clearly feels so passionately that she is going to continue talking about this on twitter and on her show, whatever. They have suspended her for giving her opinion. She is an opinion host. If you watch espn, most of the people throughout the day are just telling the scores. Right . They are just telling, narrating the highlights. Jamell and her partner michael along with the folks on first take they are among a few of the opinion hosts on espn. They are saying please stop giving you are opinion. Even though we pay you to give your opinion. At a time when sports is more politicized and activisty than ever. If she were to see these comments and not say anything it would be polianaish. They dont understand the depth of the importance of this issue for jamell and others, who are simply saying stop killing news now weighing in is konz leeza rice, a tremendous sports fan, former secretary of state. Listen to what she said. Do need to get over this controversy. Whatever the players were trying to do in drawing attention to these issues it has gone another way now and people have stopped listening to oop other. Yeah, the black players and jamell and others have felt unlistened to, unheard from the beginning of this. The other side has completely made a dodge out of this making it about the flag, making it about the military. Its never been about those things. And Collin Kaepernick and others have been clear from the gingham its not about that. In some cases you see veterans kneeling with them at home or on the sidelines, on the field. There are many veterans who are with them who fully support what they are talking about. I would like to hear some people dealing with the issue that they are talking about, the Police Violence against unarmed black people. And not trying to make it about these other things, if other dodges. Let me play devils advocate in another sense. You are somebody who loves football, its expensive to go to an nfl game by most peoples standards. Absolutely. They go. They bring their family. Maybe they even go because they want to get away from Everything Else thats going on in the world. For them the reason they like sports or nfl games is because it is a diversion from whats going on in the world. Do you understand people who say, and weve heard people in the stands say this, look, i have heard them. I get it. Now can i just watch my Football Game . I mean sports has never for me been purely a diversion. Politics is completely wrapped up in sports. I grew up in boston where we did not root for the red sox because they were the last team to integrate baseball even though at that time they had jim rice. I think about jack audio robinson, muhammad ali, i dont think about this oasis will politics does not exist. For some people it is that. If they want to be blind to the politics that course throughout sports all the time. Look, if these players kneeling at this moment is so offensive to you, maybe you should consider what is so offensive to them that they feel the needed to do that. We just heard the president say when he was with the Pittsburgh Penguins that he spoke last night to jerry browne. Whats the situation where you are right now . Reporter chris, the devastation now on historic proportions. We just spoke to a fire chief with calfire who says those numbers are now even increased. Hes calling this the worst series of fires in the napa valley history. New we are talking about as you mentioned the death toll now rising to 15 people. We have seen it rise from 10 to 11, to 13, now 15. We are talking about more than 2,000 homes and structures spread out among eight counties that have been devastated or destroyed. And we are talking about people now under mandatory evacuation. We are talking about shelters that are full. We are talking about schools that are closed down. We are talking about a situation where firefighters dealing with cell towers that are down that are trying to communicate and fight back this fire. It is so bad right now that fire crews are saying they are not focused on containment. Not focused on trying to pare down the flames. They are focusing on rescues, focused on making sure people are safe pushing back the fire lines so they can do the work they need to do eventually to pare down the flames. This is napa valley. Look here. This used to be a home at what used to be what i think is a bedroom, what i think is a laundry room. Beyond that, what i think is a living room with the only structure standing standing her that chimney. Not too far from here, there are two deaths here in napa. They are an elderly couple, we have heard from officials, a woman whos 99 years old and her husba husband 100 years old and her daughter said they simply couldnt make it out. She said simply that shes glad that both of them died together instead of one of them dying and the other living, they were that close. Tragedies were now hearing in this area with vineyards that are completely gone up in flames and are destroyed, not to mention the homes, and people who are trying to get back to their homes, not to mention that with the cell phone towers are down, theres no cell service, so people are unable to notify their family that they are safe. Reporter Torrey Brinkman has always been a survivor, born two we weeks earlier, she lived with a mother addicted to heroin. Their history together shows how savage the grip of addiction today. Today torrey is a remarkably composed 15yearold telling her story her way. What do you remember about those early years with your mom . She never ate, she would have maybe a coke a day and maybe some water, and she would never take care of me and feed me, i had to feed myself. I always considered myself the parent and my mom the kid. Did she sell drugs . Yeah, she did. Reporter did she get in trouble for that . Yes, when i was 7 or 8, she made me do a drug deal for her. Reporter what did he ask you to do . She put heroin or cocaine in a napkin and said run up there and give this to them. Reporter she says she never got any health care or dental care when she was young. I never went to the dentist, never went to the doctor. Reporter torrey would call her grand parents when they ran out of food. Three years ago, lillian and richard were awarded legal custody. When she first came to live with us permanently, she was blaming herself, maybe if i was better, mom wouldnt have done the drugs. Reporter and it wasnt just torreys mom abusing heroin in the home, her uncle was the closest thing she had to a father figure. What happeneduncle . He died in 2015 from a heroin overdose. That must have been superhard for you. Yes, he basically took care of me. If my mom didnt take care of me, he would take care of me. It was just sad. Reporter you want a klenex, i have one. Ive got one over here. Reporter okay. Come here, this is really hard stuff to talk about. At 14 years old, torrey has seen enough pain for a lifetime, making her attitude and spirit today all the more impressive. Heres a difficult question, why are you talking to us . Because i want to spread awareness on how drugs have not only affected my life but have probably affected a lot of other kids lives and i just want to help people. Reporter torrey is a determined young woman and she wants to be a brain surgeon one day. Her grandparents have given her a safe place to live. Torrey is proud of her mom and they see each other just about every week now. It what an inspiration she is, i would not bet against her to be a brain surgeon. Shes going to be a brain surgeon for sure. Tune in tonight, for more on kates reporting, one nation overdosed shes looking at the impact of heroin overdose all across the country. And theres a brandnew report out from defcon that shows just how easy it would be for a hacker to hack into voting machines. Hackers were encouraged to infiltrate voting machines. They were able to break into each one. I want to bring in former permanent ambassador to nato. Ambassador you spoke in july at a conference about this, do these findings surprise you at all . They are a bit surprising, though this story is actually about 10 years old. It goes back to the point where certain election jurisdictions across america invested in these internet based machines for voting purposes, which seemed a very efficient way to vote at the time. From the outset, computer scientists across the country have highlighted how vulnerable these machines are, so vulnerable to outside influences and hacking and so forth. Largely those voices fell silent and went unnoticed until last year, when we hear now that a foreign actor such as russia had an active campaign to try to influence the American Election campaign. So based on the combination now of russias influence and now the voting machines. We actually did some experimentation, we challenged the hackers at def krsc nrkdefc they could do what they expected. They were successful only within minutes of trying. If theyre so good at hacking in, are they able to say heres what you need to do to stop it from happening . Or what do we need to do . Actually its not that hard, we know first of all, the first fundamental things is to take the machines which are still in use across 14 states of the 50 states in america. Takes those machines off the internet, disconnect them from the internet. Thats one thing. The second thing is very basic, and this sounds a little counter intuitive in the 21st century. Begin the voting process with paper ballots. Paper ballots are not only secure, they are not connected to the internet, and they provide us with an audit trail, so we can go back and validate the results of the elections. And we need to institute basic cyber hacking strategies. For example, Voter Registration databases today for the 50 states are maintained and stored on the internet. If a hacker can manipulate and corrupt a registration database, then the voter doesnt even get to the ballot box. So all of these are cyber related vulnerabilities that we have to attend to. And surprifrankly the time the. The 2018 elections are only a few months off. I believe that russia learned a lot in its probing attacks last year and will be a more sophisticated attacker by 2018. Thank you so much for coming on, appreciate it. And thats going to do it for me for this hour, you can au always find me on twitterwitter. Hi, everyone, its 4 00 in new york on a busy news day.
