Murdered oar just missing . It draws new comments from the president. As of this moment, they deny it, and deny it vehemently. Coming up, the latest on the search for the truth about khashoggi and the impact of trumps past relationship with the saudis may have on the investigation. Also ahead, defining unhinged, the new parlance of politics. In their lust for power the democrats have become totally unhinged. It was something about when i put this hat on, it made me feel like superman. Kanye west, what he did was pretty amazing. Im going to stomp all over your face with golf spikes. And spell candidly. So you were sending a message with your jacket . It was kind after message, yes. Were going to get to all of that, but first, this just in. We have New York Times reporting that confidential financial documents show the president as soninlaw Jared Kushner likely did not pay federal income taxes for several years. Joining me, a coauthor of the articles jessie drucker. We do want to tell our views nbc news have not seen the documents, but how were you able to view them . Im not going to get into how we viewed them, but we did review them and consulted with experts to figure out what they meant. I have a lot of this stuff highlighted. To the network, it is increased to nearly 324 million in just this last decade, but youre reporting it appears to have avoided the federal taxes. The article says, nothing in the documents suggest mr. Kushner or his company broke the law. So put that together. Is that possible . Why dont i talk about what the documents show. Okay. Basically the most interesting takeaway that we reported on today is that for probably five out of the last eight years and possibly the entire period of time Jared Kushner appears to have paid little to no federal income taxes. In five of those years its likely he paid no federal income taxes at all. What is driving that is the tax code has enormous benefits for Real Estate Investors, primarily depreciation allowing them to take big deductions corresponding to what they pay for the properties they buy. There is nothing illegal about that, theres enormous flexibility for them to determine their own tax bills, but one of the interesting things in the tax legislation signed by the president last year, several of those benefits for Real Estate Developers were made significantly more generous. This has for both other industries and other individuals were pared back. The precise benefit having Jared Kushner, that provision was made significantly more generous in the new legislation. Even though he bought with borrowed funds, the result, as you write here, kushner is getting tax reduction losses for spending someone elses money, which is permitted under this tax code. So why any sort of uproar over this . I think theres a couple things to say. The first thing simply is people are interested in questioning the wisdom of a tax law that permits people worth more than 300 million go years and years without paying any federal income taxes. The mechanism that allowed him was made more generous in the legislation that President Trump signed. Theres another provision in the tax law that permits Real Estate Investors to indefinitely defer Capital Gains taxes when they sell a piece of property. That tax benefit was limit nated last year for every industry except one, the one that was permitted to keep that benefit was real estate, and kushners cohas done several transactions like that, which also played a roe in Jarrell Kushner having such low income tax bills. Jessie, this has been a onetwo bunch the. Last week there was a bombshell report from the times that accused the president of outright frayed, and the trish administration was in a position to clean up the tax code and promiseding to ritz of m miscomplexity that certain taxpayers use to their advantage. So is the trump family benefiting. The Kushner Family is clearly in a better position from a tax perspective now than it was before the legislation. But as the documents we reported on today show, they were in a pretty good position before the legislation as well. Does ivanka fit into this picture as well. They separately, which is a not uncommon thing among High Net Worth couples as a way to keep their espns separate. Theres nothing in the documents that we reviewed that have any direct relationship. Youve taken a very complicated issue and made it very palatable, and pretty clear to understand. So well done on that. Anything having to do with taxes is always difficult to maneuver. Thank you very much for the conversation. Sure. Thanks for having me. Also for all of you, we want to make sure of the statement to New York Times. A spokesman for kushners attorney, quote always following the advice of numerous attorneys and accountants, mr. Kushner properly filed and paid all taxes due under the law and reg lakes. We have reached out for comment and have yet to hear back. First off Andrew Brunson landed in the u. S. Hes in and out left joint bay andrews, is scheduled to meet with the president in about an hour and a half. The president tweeted there was no deal made with turkey, and he does not make deals for hostages. And missing saudi dissident jamal khashoggi, who entered the Saudi Embassy in turkey and wasnt seen again, today the president s sharpest remarks on a new interview set to air sunday on 60 minutes. Jamal khashoggi, the journalist, the saudi journalist, was he murdered by the saudis . And did the prince give the order to kill him . Nobody knows yet. Its being investigated, worked at very strongly and we would be very upset and angry. As of this moment they deny it and deny it vehemently. Could it about them . Yes. Kell yes odonnell has more. Another good day to you. Lets goat to what the president said in this wideranging interview. Reporter a number of topics that will play out on sunday night. For this particular issue, the president acknowledges this is a complicated problem for the United States, because saudi arabia is a friend on the International Stage and there is a long Business History between the president and leadership in saudi arabia, and there are he current deals in the works for significant performing by the saudis for u. S. Made weapons. The president has said he has some concern about tensions harming the potential impact on jobs. Thats a bit of the back story. Here is how the president handled another question on this issue, whats at stakes for resolves shall journalist living in the United States and the impact of what it could mean on u. S. saudi relations. Theres a lot at stake, and maybe especially so because this man was a reporter. Youll be surprised to hear me say that. Theres something really terrible and disgusting about that if that were the case. Well have to see. Were going to get to the bottom of it, and there will be severe punishment. Reporter the president said an answer should come fairly soon. That will be one of the topics we will continue to press the president on about communications between himself and saudi leadership. He did tell reporters he plans to call the king of saudi arabia very soon to try to find out more. We know well look on the for an answer if there is to be given one. Joining shawn, first off, t reaction from members of congress. There seems to be a growing rift between how the president wants to handle it and what congress may want done. There does appear to be pressure from congress. Were sees a Bipartisan Coalition of senators say, look, the United States needs to bose sanctions on whoever is responsible, be it saudi arabia if thats what the United States concludes, be it somebody else . Theyre taking a pretty hard line right now. What we are seeing from the white house is more of a waitandsee approach, a careful and cautious approach. What were hearing from the president is caution about the prospect of sanctions. At the same time hes talking about potentially severe punishments, so a bit of mixed messaging, but certainly we are seeing pressures from both the parties on the capitol hill, if they conclude whoever is responsible for this, that they take pretty swift action. I want to play what john bolton had to say. We are at noon on thursday, are you satisfied with what the saudis have told us about the disappearance of mr. Khashoggi . Well, i dont think weve known enough. I spoke with the crown prince yesterday, along with Jared Kushner, secretary of state mike pompeo spoke to the crown prince as well. The president has spoken to this issue. It is something we need to get resolved, and we need to do it as soon as possible. Bolton speaking with msnbc contributor hue hewitt. Is there a sense, aaron, specifically on what the white house strategy is . Shawn said theres been mixed messaging. I was just going to repeat that. The mixed messaging is strong. As the president said, especially against somebody who has close ties to the United States who is a reporter. At the same time President Trump was so well received on his First International trip where he visited saudi arabia. He sees it as a big win. He inked an arms deal with the saudis. This week he has tied that. He said he doesnt want to interrupt u. S. Jobs. You see him trying to toe the line between the u. S. Economic interest and the geopolitical consequences of khashoggis disappearance. Okay, guys, shawn lets move to the latest piece and how democrats are worried about the latino voter turnout. Im curious what this is about, and how democrats, have they been caught offguard with the Democrat Group appeared a shakeup here . Im going to add you are echoing the same sentiments of steve kornacki. Hes been raisings the alarm, too. Particularly when you look at the states that are going to potentially decide control of the senate and control of the house. And in nevada, in arizona, in florida, in texas, states where you have a large latino populations, democratic strategists are worried they are not doing enough, the campaigns have not done enough to engage with the hispanic communities to get them ingauged to vote. You have some Close Senate Races in texas, in arizona, in nevada, and republicans are defending a 5149 majority right now in the senate. Democrats really want to pick up some seats in these places, but they need their base to turn out. It is a midterm election, so typically turnout does tend to be lower, and strategists are really, really watching these states, looking for ways to engage with the hispanic communities and to get them to turn out in this election, and to get them to vote for democratic candidates. Well, does it also mean, shawn that they have to focus on what is it appears to be the top issue for the latino community, which is the economy . Its really about the economy . And its also about health care. A lot of strategists made the point that immigration does get a lot of attention, the trump administrations policies are something that certainly the Hispanic Community has looked at very, very closely and upsets a lot of people, but strategists point out that health care is a big issue, so youre seeing Spanish Language ads about democrats protecting the Affordable Care act, protecting provisions, so were seeing ads on immigration, on the economy, but also a lot on health care, add a lot of democrats believe that could by the issue that resonates most sharply with their base and with his spain voters. Lets take a sharp pivot and turn to the first lady mel lannia trulan melania trump. You know i often asked myself if i would not wear that jacket, if i would have so much media coverage. Its obvious i didnt wear the jacket for the children. I wore the jacket to go on the plane and off the plane, and it was for the people and for the left wing media who are criticizing me and i want to show them that i dont care. So you were sending a message with the jacket . It was kind of a message, yes. Erin, what is your takeaway . Were seeing her repeat the line that the president gave us after she was photographed wearing that jacket. He said its a commentary on the left wing, on the media, this is how the first lady feels. I really dont care, do you . But what we heard from the press office at the time that there was no message in there for anybody to read into in the jacket. So its interesting to hear the first lady coming out. Shes been very clear she doesnt want people criticizing her sartorial expresses, but its an expression from a person we very rarely hear from. How Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi promises to go after the president s tax returns if the democrats win the mid terms. How can she do what no one else has been able to do . A onceinfive hundred year storm should happen every five hundred years, right . Fact is, there have been twentysix in the last decade. Allstate is adapting. With drones to assess home damage sooner. And if a flying object damages your car, you can snap a photo and get your claim processed in hours, not days. Plus, allstate can pay your claim in minutes. Now that you know the truth. Are you in good hands . New signs the president s tax returns could be targeted if theres a blue wave in the mid terms next month. In a new interview with the San Francisco chronicle nancy pelosi said if the democrats win the house, they will immediately try to forget the president to release the tax returns, because, quote, its the easiest thing in the world. Joining mess is john yarmouth. Lets get into this the irs says theres nothing preventing individuals from releasing individuals. How can you make public the president s tax returns . Can you do that . Well, i dont know if we can make them public, but there is a mechanism whereby the ways and Means Committee can request the returns and are entitled to get them. I dont know the specifics as to whether there is a presumption of confidentiality attached to that, but i know they can get access to the returns. Look, if Congress Gets hall of them, theyll be public, right . No question about that, absolutely. You know, when you look at whats happened recently with the saudis and what we have seen on an ongoing basis, the American People need to know exactly the extent of President Trumps ties to they countries. Theres a serious question whether hes been compromised by these considerations. Would that be enough to satisfy you and those in the party . Or do you think there would be a push to go after corporate returns . No, i think his personal returns would be adequate. Just like with Jared Kushners returns, a lot of the Business Activities pass through to his personal returns, so im not as much concerned with the corporate aspect of it. I think most the the ties to other interests would show up on his personal return. Lets talk about the president s oped. It was published in usa today about health care where he criticized the democrats plan, but then the Washington Post did their Fact Checking on it and found that almost every sentence contained a misleading statement or a falsehood. Sir, i know you called this opet flatout unamerican. You have the mid terms less than a month away. Do you worry that the president is scoring points on this . This is one thing right out of the republican playbook. They ran this play back in 2010, trying to create the image that democrats are somehow going to decimate medicare. All theyre trying to do is scare seniors. Back in 2010, they said democrats will cut on the 700 million out of medicare, which is blatant think true. What we proposed to do, and in fact its been done is reduced the cost of care by that much. It doesnt result in any reduction of benefits. In fact, they have increased. So thats exactly what President Trumps trying to do now. He has an 800 billion figure hes throwing out now that were going to cut out of medicare, which is nonsense. But, you know, most of the numbers that come out of his mouth are made up. They dont relate to anything in reality. Theres a followup are these just scare tactics . Is that what the president is doing . Is this just classic political scare tactics . Of course. The one thing always in the republicans playbook is to scare seniors. They are the most reliable voting denial graphic, and obviously one of their main concerns is medicare should remain viable for them. So this is, again, a triedandtrue tactic. As you know, the president is heading your way. Hes going to expectedly support andy barr in that very tight congressional race against democrat amy mcgrath. Some are saying just pretend the president s name is on the ballot, but we have seen several candidates who have done that, and they have lost their races. How do you interpret the president s endorsements . Are they harmful or helpful . Well, i think they probably dont move the base. Theyre loyal, theyre not going anywhere. Where amy mcgrath has been incredibly successful, both in a primary which very few expected her to win and now in the general election campaign. She has made inroads to audiences that are generally not even solicited. She has a field hive in every one of her 19 counties. In her primary race, at the mayor of lexington, very popular mayor won fayette county, which is lexington, but she won all of those 18 more rural counties. She did it by showing up, talking to the people. They have fallen in love with her, with her background as a marine fighter pilot, and shes made a real inroad thats going to be hard for donald trump to overcome. You know, its hard when you doesnt serve and you got five deferments with a bone spur to take on somebody who really fought and ran combat missions, particularly the first woman actually to fly combat missions for the marines. This is definitely one of most hot lid contested races. Senator heller is thought by many to be the republicans most endangered incumbent. So why is this one not allowing the democrats to maintain that slight lead thats a good question. There is a couple reasons why this is one the margin of error. Republicans are going to vote for republicans, and the registration is close enough, and janney rosen who you mention she was recruited by harry reid. So heller and the republicans have been able to draft the definition. Thats why the race is still so close. You mentioned Hillary Clinton carrying the state, have you seen anybody that shows any significant shift from that position two years ago . The rental trace number are pretty close. They have been building up that lead, though in the last few months, but republicans always turn out more in mid terms than democrats, and you have gotly by significant margin. You heard Shawn Sullivan talk about hispanic turnout. It dropped down to about 10 or the entire electorate. Theyre very worried about that. If they can get he, that dean heller will lose. It shows theyre pretty evenly split. And also on the president s job approval. What effect is he having on the race . Im curious if heller is embracing him or running from him . Now for week after almost being a nevertrumper, saying he was 99 . The question is what is the impact if theyre not good, and theyre not as bad as they are, but heller has made a political calculation here almost anything and the driveup republican turnout if they can get energize the enough that can neutralize it, but really its the only path to victory. Im going to stomp all over your face with golf spikes, because im going to win this for the state of pennsylvania, and were throwing you out of office. My kids would get a timeout if they said anything like that. Scott wagner on his democratic opponent and Current Governor tom wolfe in a now deleted campaign video. Lets bring in peter emerson. He worked in three administrations, ashley prath, nbc think contributor, and lawrence zelt, and joel payne. Was i right . Is that the kind of discourse we should be having . Anyway, ashley, Scott Wagners spokesman said his comments were not to be taken literally, but a metaphor how to approach the final campaign. What do you make of that explanation . Metphorical or not, these words were said. This was a huge problem in 2016, and now the rhetoric that i think is accepted in american politics. Were at a point where we mentioned before, is this rock bottom . I didnt think it could get any worse than 2016, but the lack of civility and the fact that people can say things without et meaning them, metphorical, dog spikes really . Is this the point were going to act at such a way that is violent . I dont think this is okay, what are we teaching or kids if we say this type of rhetoric is okay . But again, its one thats embraced by the occupant of 1600 pennsylvania avenue, and his tweets often show that this type of rhetoric is going to be accepted and acknowledged by the American People as a new normal. I think its up to everyone else to say no more. Peter, we had former ag eric holder who made waves with his own comments this week. Lets listen. Michelle always says, when they go low, we go high. No, no, when they go low, we kick em. [ cheers and applause ] thats what thats what this new Democratic Party is about. When i say we kim eek, i dont mean anything inappropriate or illegal, but we gve got to be tough. Im glad we played the full he statement, because a lot of Media Outlets have stopped after the first statement of we kim them. I think in the case of eric holder, and also the candidates in pennsylvania, it goes way too far. Its not a metaphor. Its a violent use of words, whether its kick them, or kick them with a pair of golf shoes, its reprehensible. However, eric holder is absolutely correct, we can no longer while were fighting for the constitution, bill of rights and rule of law, that we just take all of this. A lot of people said, you know, with can compromise with the king, we can work this out f those people had won the argument and had not taken the battlefield, this program would be produced by the british broadcasting company. Lauren, im curious the level to which you think voters take this discourse seriously. Do you think it can create violence out there . I do. Im actually quite concerned about what we are seeing on both sides. Youre seeing republicans point to the statements coming from democrats. I think thats disengenous. The reality of this situation is you see the rhetoric that goes on at the president s rallies thats something thats inspired people on the left to say were going to fight fire with fire. Heres the thing. Im not interested in who started it. Im interested in whos going to finish it. You saw republican congressman Steve Scalise come out with an oped calling to for an end to this rhetoric. There was a group at the time released this week by a group called more in common, and it found that 77 of people dont believe our differences are so big that we cant overcome them. I think it starts with ourselves in our own families and communities and what were saying here today. 100 it starts in the home, but congressman scalise i think should go to the white house and say, hello, mr. President , read this, sir. Joel, you worked for Hillary Clinton. I want to listen to what she said earlier this week. You cannot be civil with a Political Party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about. Thats why i believe if we are fortunate enough to win back the house and or the senate, thats when civility can start again. But until then the only thing the republicans seem to recognize and respect is strength. What is she advocating for here clearly . How are you interpreting this . I sbempt her advocating for whatever he advocates for, which is to resist, resist peacefully, but to resist and not just quietly go into the night as republicans rip down the progress that the democrats have made. You know whats frustrating i think for a lot of americans is the mixing of the two parties. So you take, you know, the general mr. Wagner said, and eric holder, you mush them together and make the same storyline, and theyre not. When people call for outvie violence, that has to be rejected. When people call for you to be tough and stand up, thats fair game, thats called democracy, and thats okay. I want to give this one to peter. What does this say about where we are heading as a nation . That this is the kind of talk that both sides are latching on to . We are heading as a nation to what could be easily a 21st century civil war. The fear in this country is at a level i have never, ever experienced. From that the symptoms are the tribalism, the violent rhetoric, the demonstrations, all of that feeds into this fear, and its much like a cancer. It just multiplies on itself. So my great fear is, in the fear environment were in, is that ultimately, we start pulling back the freedoms that have been fought for for so long, whether its the freedom of civil rights, voting were seeing in georgia, that suddenly everybody starts pulling back. So ashley, the question i want to ask you now, and it would echo the sentiments i think of your republican colleague here, lauren, does it all start at the top . Is it something thats gotten exponentially worse under this president . Yes, i cant even tell you the amount of criticism that has been violent, negative, nasty, degrading toward me as a female who has been an outspoken critic of this administration because of this type of language and hypocrisy. Im told to get intact boo the kitchen. Im told not to vote. I am told they comment on my looks. This type of bullying i think is completely and utterly atrocious, and it does start at the top. Melania trump came out and said shes one of the most bullied women in america, and i want to say her husband is the biggest bully in america. If shes going to take a tough stance on bullying, he needs to be honest with herself and realize this rhetoric is allowed by her husband and hes the leader of our country. What message does that send . Peter, ashley, lauren and joel, thank you so much. Lauren and joel, i will start off with you guys next time. Thank you. Next recalling jfks moon shot. One of the moments from the new film first man in the story of nasas mission to land a man on the moon. Meanwhile a new oped in the the New York Times arguing that nasa is not just about exploring the universe. An an alarming climate report on global warming, in 2030, the effects of carbon reversal and more. Weve got to get on that. Rorys new documentary above and beyond nasas journey to tomorrow airs tonight on 9 p. M. On the discovery channel. Im so glad to have you here. Id love to talk about the role that nasa is playing, particularly in Climate Change now. Yes. First of all, its great to be here. Thank you for having me. Nasa plays an essential role in helping you understand the health of this planet and ive just made this film and spent the last two or three years with nasa making a film looking back over 60 years of history with this organization. Really what its been able to do from the very beginning, we focus on one of the stories is apollo 8, which was the first journey to the moon and navigating the moon. On the way back from that they had an image of the earth and they took that amazing photograph called earth rise, which was the first image of a human taken in out of space of this planet. They said we went to discover the moon but really we discovered the earth. Thats been nasas mission, to look outward but also look back at this planet. Right now nasa has 19 satellites that are orbiting the earth and theyve had this information coming into them for the last four, five decades. And that information goes in and spits out computer models that says to us this planet is in jeopardy. So theyre bringing together scientists, some of the smartest people on the planet. Yes. They are putting together scientific documentation and coming up with their assessment of whats happening. Is there partisan politics being played inside nasa at all here . I have to say i spoke to probably 45 nasa scientists throughout this. I have no idea if they were democrats or republicans at all. One of the people who left the greatest impressions on me was pierce sellers, he was an astronaut, he did space walks, amazing guy. Soon before i met him, he was diagnosed with pan kree creatic cancer. He was given a year to live. He had to face what am i going to do with the next year of my life . He decided im going to go back to nasa tomorrow and look at every single day at the science and we are on a train wreck. The planet will probably be just fine but the humans who occupy the planet, were on a train wreck and im going to work every day the rest of my life to try and tell people we are on a train wreck and we have to change the course of Human History and we need to do it right now. Youve done it with this film. You were out there. You have devoted your life the last couple of years to this. What is your takeaway, aside from this massive alarm bell, what did you find repeated again and again or something that surprised you that you uncovered . Well, i think the urgency of the message of whats happening with this planet is the most concerning. The interesting thing is that it came not only from the e scientists who are focusing on it from the perspective of earth but also from the astronauts. Theres this moment where astronauts go to outer space and i always would talk about and what was it like to first go to outer space, its such an incredible thing, and each of them would talk about looking back at earth. I remember talking to one scientist or astronaut rather who had studied all of the maps on earth when he was going around the globe that he knew where he was and what countries he was over. And then he goes up there and of course there were no lines, right. And there was this sense of were all one group of people occupying this planet together. You know, were all humans and were all in it together and we have this opportunity right now to save us from really whats going to be many more hurricane michaels and so much destruction. I think we really need our leadership to step in here. It is a documentary airing tonight, done by you. Massive applause on this one. 9 00 discovery channel, above and beyond nasas journey. Jour.
