Were just getting word, watching National Anthems ahead of 1 00 p. M. Eastern nfl game starts. We have been perusing all of these games, folks. We have seen players from the saints, the patriots, the dolphins, the buccaneers, they have not all stood, some have been standing together locked in arms. Some have been kneeling. We also can note that tom brady of the patriots, he did come out on the field. He stood there with his team. His head was down. His hand was over his heart, but perhaps most notably, in chicago, the steelers are playing the bears. And they had said via their coach earlier today that the steelers would stay in the locker room for the duration of the National Anthem. We can confirm they have only moments ago taken to the sidelines. They all stayed in the locker room during the National Anthem as a form of protest. What youre seeing here also from london, we had Wembley Stadium earlier today where we had evidence on both sides of the field there of players taking a stand against President Trump and his condemnation of those athletes who have chosen to kneel in protest of his comments. Of course, one of the president s early supporters strongly condemning his comments about the nfl players taking a knee during the National Anthem. Rex ryan, former coach for the buffalo bills. Here he is this morning. Im pissed off, ill be honest with you, because i supported donald trump. I sat back when he asked me to introduce him at a rally in buffalo, i did that. But im reading these comments, and its appalling to me. Right away, im associated with what donald trump stands for and all that because, you know, i introduced him. I never signed up for that. I never wanted thats. And again, his comments coming on the heels of white a powerful scene from london this morning. A number of those nfl ravens and jaguars players youre seeing there taking a knee in defiance of the president s remarks on their form of protest. Standing beside them, players and staff linking arms as a show of solidarity. Heres what former ravens player adalious thomas told me, calling on the Republican Party to speak up. The fact that hes continued to divide us as a country and hes shown his true colors, but the Republican Party has defended him from christie, who said it was new york everyday talk earlier, i think paul ryan said hes new at this. That was one of the excuses. So it will be interesting to hear their excuse now, saying my freedom of speech is only on my own time, not when im clocked in. If thats the case, youre the president for the next four years. How about you use that same rhetoric for yourself . We should also say perhaps most notably, overseas in london, the owner of the jacksonville jaguars, he came out, rather, and linked arms in solidarity with his players there. Lets go to met life stadium in East Rutherford, new jersey. Any minute now, the dolphins jets game is set to begin. What youre seeing there is the steelers bears game in chicago. Those steelers, all of them, stayed inside the locker room, and they protested by not participating in the National Anthem publicly there. Back to rutherford. Lets go to Morgan Radford there for us. Morgan, are we expecting any kind of reaction or statement from either team there . Reporter well, you can hear the crowd actually cheering behind me in the stadium just as this game begins. The question is going to be how the fans react based on what they see today. Alex, so far, we have talked to them. Some said theyre conflicted. Some say we support the nfl players who are deciding to protest. And other people i spoke to said, no, we side with President Trump. We dont think this is the time or the place. They said this isnt so much about freedom of speech, but they felt like really protesting was an affront to the service men and Service Women of this country. As you mentioned, we saw earlier in the first game of the day in london, those players from both sides of the team taking a kneel, and others were standing locked arm in arm. Even the owner of the jaguars stood there locked in solidarity. This is much bigger than just the nfl. This has also extended to the nba and also mlb. We saw the first baseball player take a knee yesterday. And those mega superstars like lebron james and steph curry, they jumped in to say, look, this is really about our freedom of speech. Were taking a stand for equality. Were taking a stand for inclusion. Lets take a listen to what some of those fans had to say. I think the sports players, the nfl, the nba, and Major League Baseball players are completely validated in their protest, and all donald trump is doing is validating everything the players have been doing and everything that Colin Kaepernick has been doing for the last two years. What do you mean validating . Theres inequality in the country. Its tough for some people to see it, but very obvious for others. Its not a protest against the military. Its a protest about inequality. And that gentleman added, i think, really put into perspective what a lot of people we spoke to were feeling. Some said, look, i may not look like Colin Kaepernick. I may not look like the men who are saying theyre the type of people who are being, you know, aggressed against in this country, but they say i still have a way of understanding how they might feel, and i can also separate my love for the game of football and what i really do, in their opinion, stand for free speech. So those are kind of the conflicting values that were hearing among a lot of the players and a lot of the fans today at these games. You know what, morgan, i want to tell you, we have gotten in video we want to show folks there. I mentioned earlier at the top of the broadcast this hour that some of the dolphins players took a knee. We just saw a clip of that right there. That may be part of the shouting and applause that you heard behind you there. And there were seeing other jets players linking arms in solidarity. So theres a lot of expression on football fields around this country and also as people are tailgating and giving their opinions to people like you and others around this country, as everyone is weighing in on this issue today. It seems to have become the hot button issue of this sunday. But again, were showing you pictures, guys, of the game there in East Rutherford or at least the pregame between the Miami Dolphins and the new york jets. And the flag there being taken off the field. This happening just moments ago. All right, morgan, thank you so much from East Rutherford for that. Lets get more on all this with bruce levell and well as your reaction to what were seeing on football fields around the country today. Yeah, thanks for having me. Well, first of all, unfortunately, i have been talking about this since the incident happened with Colin Kaepernick. One thing i want to bring to light about this is we all agree in the First Amendment and President Trumps heart that the peaceful protesting, but this is something that kind of bugs me a little bit as a Business Owner and who employs people. These players, since were on the nymfl subject, they agree i this contractual agreements. Its not fair for someone to sign up saying hey, were going to work out x amount of days, go out and play the game on sunday, but before we come out and have our huddle, were going to do the National Anthem, and this is what you agree on the terms and conditions for your contract to play for the nfl. Which is they do work for an employer. They are employees. So i have to respectfully disagree. I dont think its fair to the owner. I wouldnt see you, alex, go out and protest on msnbc because you signed a contract to be a fabulous news anchor here at msnbc. I think respectfully, giving respect back to the employer, and if you want to practice that, then for gods sake, start your own league, your own team, your own business. Its what makes this country so great. I think the American People need to get back on track to there has to be some agreement with an employer and employee on the terms and conditions when they come in on what they agree with. So this is not fair to the employer. Bruce, and you know, i agree about employer employee relationships. But i have to tell you, im not seeing one of these employers, not one owner that has put out statements today that arent in lock step, if not standing next to those players. Im looking at all of them. Bills, broncos, steelers, browns. I mean, atlanta falcons, detroit lions. One after the next. So they dont seem to be having the same kind of beef that you do. You know, they have a right to their own opinion. They are employers. If they deem they want to have that in their team, then they have that right. But what im trying to say is that its unfair to grandstand on someone elses dime. What im disappointed in is when Colin Kaepernick came out, why didnt he form a 5013 z and form a landing pad of these concerns and put these issues on the table. For example, i mean, alex, its no secret. We have been through a lot as an africanamerican businessman in atlanta, we have all been through a lot, but we have come a long way. We can go a lot further with respectful as it relates to our employers and employees. There has to be a line, and its totally unfair to the owners and to the American People. But bruce, heres the deal. You talk about Colin Kaepernick. You want him to form some 301 c or whatever you said, they want to make a public statement. They have a right to do it. On their dime. No, maam. Like i said earlier, you wont come out the studio and protest against the ce oh of msnbc because you respect the terms of your contract. Youre going to do this men a vacation days, show up and do this many hits. Thats cool. But if you dont like it, you start your own network or do your own thing. Thats what makes this country so great. Thats why i challenge the American People. Dont get off track on that. Dont let something that people have built, this beautiful country on, on free enterprise, to like hey, if i dont like it here, then ill go to another network. Ill go to another team. So its not fair. It really isnt. I appreciate what youre saying from the employ employee employer contract, but how would you suggest they do protest and have their voices heard . There are all forms of protest. In this regard, this is peaceful protest. Nobody is fist fighting. Nobody is throwing things at Police Officers. There have been forms of protest in this country where that is the way things are done. And thats destruction of peoples property. Thats destruction of the businesses that youre trying to support. You know, just random destruction of businesses. That never does any good. And we talk about it. But were talking about this issue. Its an important issue, and its being done peacefully. Right, but see alex, okay, so what is the premise of this issue . If we ask, what is the reason . You know, for example, is it because theres not enough africanamericans playing in the nfl . Is there not enough africanamerican coaches . At the end of the day, and im not trying to dance around, because i have a rich history of civil rights in my father and uncle who marched with dr. King back in atlanta. So i get it. But what im trying to figure out is, like, where is the base. Where is this going to go . Where can it lead . Respectfully, it has to be on, you know, its not fair to subject an employer when you come in, you know im going to say the National Anthem. Were going to work out in the training camp, play x amount of games, do this. So youre like, okay, ill sign up. But for gods sake, if you dont want to do that, then start your own business, your own league. Thats just being fair, alex, respectfully. Bruce, when pretty much everyone the president has targeted here is africanamerican i disagree. Can you really argue there is not a racial component to this spat . No, maam. Because it doesnt matter if youre purple, green, or blue. The president of the United States is so passionate, and me as a son of a retired Sergeant Major who fought two tours in vietnam. My wifes dad, two tours in vietnam. All my uncles. We fought for this flag so we could have all types of religions and all types of people under this flag. So the flag protects all of us. So yes, its emotional for President Trump and many, many americans, which support the majority that disagree with people protesting the National Anthem because thats one thing that we can say, okay, we may not agree with a lot of things but this is one thing that waves that we can fall up under, jew, christian, muslim, whoever you are. But bruce, those that are thats the emotion behind this is what im trying to say. Those who are kneeling would argue to you that they are doing so in protest of things and unfair practices under this flag here in the United States. But im sorry. I dont want to sound like a broken record, but for gods sake, if youre going to do that, dont subject, and alex, i said it earlier, it wouldnt be fair to your ceo of msnbc if you went outside your contract and said knowing you agreed to the terms of conditions. You know, its kind of like its respectfully not fair, but i totally get it. I really get the First Amendment and the right to peaceful, i get it, but you know, do it on your dime. Dont subject the majority of the people who disagree with you under that employer employee agreement. Thats just been my take on this. Look, bruce, i want you to stay because im going to bring in a couple more voices to join us in this conversation. Chris kluwe, former nfl player, also an advocate on issues such as samesex marriage and lgbtq rights. And chris, as a former nfl player, youre listening to my conversation with bruce, and its talking about the contract between employee and employer. What do you think about that . About trying to have a peaceful expression, peaceful demonstration that many of these nfl players are doing today, but doing it on their own time or their own dime . Well, i think i just listened to the most disgusting piece of fascist propaganda i have heard since 1930s era germany. The idea that people can only be valued for the amount of money they can provide for a corporation is antithetical to the entirety of what america stands for. Lets not forget that at one time slavery was legal. That was a contract you could follow. To say that because someone has a job that they must not protest against inequality within their society, frankly, that is unbelievable. I dont see how you can consider yourself an american and say that kind of stuff. Like i just dont get it. How do you sleep at night by saying that . Is that a question for me, alex . I believe so. That is a question for you. I think so. Im sorry. I cant see you. Theres no monitor here. But can i ask you a question, sir, since were having it real on tv . Where do you work at . I used to work in the nfl. Then i protested for peoples rights on my own dime, on my own time. And i was kicked out of the league. So your argument holds no merit, sir. Where do you work now, sir . I am a stayathome dad because i can no longer play in the nfl because i protested on my own time and i was kicked out of the league. Okay, so my whole deal here, what i have been saying all along. Uhhuh. Its totally unfair to anyone when you go into any agreement. Ill say it again and again. To take your platform and push it on someone when you know thats what you agreed going into it, sir. Thats all my argument. Im totally for it. Im not trying to push back on the First Amendment. What im trying to say is that youre talking in circles, trying to have your cake and eat it too. Youre trying to say the contract allows people to reenforce the idea that inequality is okay. Thats exactly what youre saying. Bruce, first of all, your premise is wrong. First, in the nba, there is a contract that says youve got to stand for the National Anthem. Thats not the contract in the National Football league. We sign a contract. The contract does not say ive got to stand for the National Anthem. So your premise is flawed. There is no contract saying when i sign this, im saying i got to stand for the National Anthem. That is clearly voluntary. And before, like in the 30s and 40s, my High School Coach played, they kept the players in the locker room. Then they played the national ant anthem. First, when you sign up in the nfl, you have to go to otas, but in terms of the national anthment, thats clearly traditional and voluntary. You dont have to do that. The second reason, let me tell you this, man. You know why all those owners and the thing, the other thing thats flawed about what you said, the nfl, the nba, Major League Baseball, they are not traditional businesses. They run on young supple bodies. And when those young supple bodies decide to disappear, thats why you see jerry jones and all these guys sign this thing with goodell condemning trump because hes talking about firing everybody. They know they cant do that. They know that if they fire all these guys, theres no product. Thats not like whatever business you run, but their business runs on human beings. Thats it. They dont come to the stadium to see jerry jones. Maybe your employees come to see you, but in this business, the fans, all those 67,000, 70,000, they come to see players play. When those players say you know what . Were going to kneel, were not going to show up, the owner says you know what, if we fire these guys, weve got no product. So what do you think about that . Well, i say like i said all along. We all have the right to work where we like and where we dislike. This isnt about that. Youre talking about what you sign up for. Theyre not signing up to stand for the National Anthem. So what is the period. What is the protest about. Where are we at . Youre supposed to know that. Youre on the show. Youre supposed to know what the protest is about. I cant hear. The protest is about youre talking about fair play. Its not fair play if youre a young black man and getting blown away in the street. The racist police arent out there doing 501 cs. This is what its about. For you to get on National Television and spout this garbage is completely ridiculous, man. Its without merit. Its without merit. I say, listen, im not saying were perfect, but this is beyond perfect. This is about young people excuse me. Losing their lives. Thats what this is about. We have come a long way. Have you had anybody in your family get beaten by the police . Have you . Let me finish. Let me finish. Has anybody in your family been killed or beaten by the police . Yeah, actually, i have. Okay. So that was cool, that was great . No, but let me finish because i let you talk, if you dont mind, respectfully. Yeah, we have got a long way to go. Weve come a long way. And yes, we have a long way to go, but at the end of the day, when you talk about, and we pivoted over to the Police Killing africanamericans. Sir, the highest pivot . The highest grade of africanamericans being killed is by other black people. A lot of people kill people, but not the people designed to protect you are killing you. We can go down the road, sir. White people kill white people. Is that white on white crime . Its all bad, sir. Thats not what you said. You want to single out black people killing black people. Were talking about Law Enforcement. You brought up the police. Law enforcement people who are supposed to protect our community, preying on the community and killing young people in our community. Thats what im talking about. What are you talking about . Its wrong. What are you doing about it . Why wont the president say so . Look, guys. Theres so much here we can discuss, but i want to try to keep it based on whats happening today. Currently with regard to the nfl, with the reaction to the president s speech on friday in atlanta, with his subsequent tweets both yesterday and today. Im going to ask all of you this last question. Lebron james, the king, right, in the nba . He put out a tweet yesterday, and he called the president a bum. Im going to ask you first, william, then you, chris, and then you, bruce, your thoughts on that. Did he go too far . Or with this president , is it open season because of what the president , the vernacular he uses and the way he goes after people . William, you first. In other words, what the president has done is turned this into a locker room. A locker room brawl. Thats what hes done. Hes turned it into that and chosen a group of athletes who spent their whole lives signifying. He says lebron james, the white house is special. And lebron says it was special until you got there. He tells steph curry, we disinvited you, you cant come in february. They say, you may not be the president in february. I think hes created this environment, signifying, and that kind of stuff, and yeah, i think that were not dealing with the white house of last year where civility was the thing. This is about brawling and no holds barred. Thats what this is about. Chris, what do you think of that . I dont think lebron went far enough. I would have called him a fascist, racist, would be hitler who i wouldnt trust during a third grade bake sale and every day hes in office, he degrades it, probably beyond repair. I dont know if we can recover from this. Last word to you, bruce. Once again, youll never hear me name call or call peoples names but i disagree with the statement that lebron made. However, i would entertain and invite lebron james with his notoriety, his popularity, to take his popularity and then have a sitdown with the administration and the president and work on things that could help the community and not ju just i see more of a proactive solution. And for example, jim brown, who lives in cleveland where lebron is, we met with jim brown last year with pastor darell scott back in november and it was some great dialogue. I say be more proactive and approach it to what your concerns are. But the name calling, it doesnt go anywhere. It has no substance. The president started that. And theres that, guys. Im going to actually let that be the last word. Bruce levell, chris kluwe, and william rhoden. Thank you so much. I appreciate the passion with which you spoke about the issue. Tensions between President Trump and north korea have ratcheted up in the last 24 hours. The u. S. Military flying air force bombers on the edge of north korean air space. It is the closest the military has gone to north korea this century. And the north Korean Foreign minister threatening the u. S. With a military strike. If he tried to insult the supreme dignity of my country by referring it to a rocket. By doing so, however, he committed an irreversible mistake of making our rockets visit to the entire u. S. Mainland inevitable all the more. Well, President Trump responded to that on twitter, saying just heard foreign minister of north korea speak at u. N. If he echoes thoughts of little rocket man, they wont be around much longer. Joining me now, congressman eberra, california democrat, and member of the House Foreign Affairs committee. With a welcome to you, i know youre just back from south korea. You met with the president there, president moon. Is he happy with the way President Trump is handling north korea . I dont believe so. I dont think the rhetoric and this back and forth name calling helps one bit. Theyre very concerned in south kor korea. We met with the foreign minister, and tensions are pretty high right now. Theyre on the front lines. Weve also got tens of thousands of troops, our troops, on the front lines there as well. So the back and forth doesnt help. Lets take a listen to why retired marine corps general James Cartwright is calling this a very dangerous situation. Here it is. Direct confrontation, they cant win. More than likely, its going to be something we stumble into. Somebody misinterprets one action. You have two forces across from each other standing on their tippy toes ready to go. The likelihood of a mistake is high. Do you sense folks in south korea are concerned this could accidentally or otherwise escalate into conflict . Absolutely. I mean, when you have our bombers flying close by, when you have them sending missile tests over japan, anythings possible. And accidental war absolutely has to be avoidable because you cant put that back in a box. We can try to undo a bunch of the damage that trumps done. You cant put a war back in a box. So the goal here is to get people to the table, deescalate tensions. President trumps rhetoric, the name calling, doesnt create the space for the North Koreans to come to the table. It makes it that much harder. All right, congressman, i want to switch to the topic of health care, as republicans are going to make one last push to pass a repeal and replace plan for the Affordable Care act. What would Graham Cassidy do to health care in your state . In a doctor, millions of californians would lose health care, and millions of americans would lose health care. I mean, kudos to john mccain for stepping up and saying lets not pass this atrocious bill. Im disappointed. The republicans, and i know bill cassidy, theyre looking straight at the camera and lying when they say its not going to hurt people with preexisting conditions. It will make it very hard for those folks to get health insurance. This is the bad bill. And senator cassidy should be ashamed. I have to leave it there. We have breaking news, but i will inviolate you back for a more lengthy conversation. To all of you. Breaking news from tennessee. A deadly shooting at a church in nashville. It happened at the Burnett Chapel church of christ in the neighborhood of antioch. Were told one person is dead. Eight have been wounded. This is according to information were getting from the Nashville Fire Department. We dont know if the deceased reported is a victim or the shooter. Well bring you more information once it becomes available. Coming up, were also going to have more perspectives on todays nfl protests. Whats next . Reaction ahead. Their experience is coveted. Welcome back, everyone. Im alex witt here at msnbc headquarters in new york. Its 33 past the hour. Heres what were monitoring for you. Lots of breaking reaction this hour to the president s nfl feud, the very latest from the owner of the oakland raiders, who says, quote, i can no longer ask your team to not Say Something while theyre in a raider uniform. The only thing i can ask them to do is do it with class. Not only do we have to tell people there is something wrong, we have to come up with answers. Thats the challenge in front of us as americans and human beings. Lets bring in mike who has made his way from capitol hill to marylands fedex field where the raiders will be playing the washington redskins. Lets talk about what youre seeing there, the sense of things, what you have heard. There have got to be some folks that may be tailgating already. What can you tell us . Well, right. This game starts at 8 30. It is a primetime game on nbc. We havent seen a lot of foot traffic here yet, alex, but whats interesting is the teams involved in this game obviously now, the line between politics and sports always sort of controversial, always critical of one side or the other for stepping over that line. That line has now been obliterated. The raiders, the owners have spoken out as have many owners around the league. One of the interesting parts is many of these owners im losing my umbrella. Many of these owners have in fact given political money to President Donald Trump who thought in alabama opening this fuse by criticizing Colin Kaepernick and others who have knelt against police injustment and brutality against africanamericans. The raiders have marshawn lynch, a star running back. Hes been sitting on a cooler during the National Anthem. Hasnt said exactly why, although everyone is inferring hes backing Colin Kaepernicks line. They have the only all africanamerican offensive line in the National Football league. They have let it be known theyll be kneeling during the National Anthem. We have the Pittsburgh Steelers who just a few minutes ago, remember, many nfl games kick off at 1 00 p. M. Eastern time. The Pittsburgh Steelers today fulfilled what their Coach Mike Tomlin said they would do, and they stayed inside the locker room during the National Anthem. Meanwhile, such a person as the secretary of the treasury, steve mnuchin, is weighing in on this. Hes calling for the nfl to pass rules to forbid them. He says this is a workplace. The owners are the bosses. They should be able to set the rules after President Trump is calling for a boycott by fans of nfl games until players stop kneeling. The Takeaknee Movement sweeping the nfl tood. There will be a lot of people making their way in. Im sure youll get a lot of opinions shortly. We do have breaking news to report for all of you again, reiterating what we told you, in tennessee, specifically nashville, a deadly shooting at a church in the community of antioch. It happened at the Burnett Chapel church of christ. Were told that one person is dead, eight have been wounded. Were getting this information from the Nashville Fire Department. Joining me on the phone, joel ebert from the nashville, tennesseen. Tell me what you have heard, what do you know . Some of the same situation as you guys. We have heard six to eight people were shot and injured. The Nashville Police just tweeted out that it is a mass casualty situation, they described it as. Among the injured is the shooter. And this is at a church that was is a little north of the city itself. Yeah, and im also looking at what Nashville Fire Department is tweeting out, again, adding to your mass casualty situation, folks have been taken to area hospitals. Were also hearing that the majority are older adults, and again, you say that the shooter is among the wounded. This is according to nashville fire, but that would not mean that the shooter is the person who has been passed away, who has passed away, rather. Have you made that distinction definitively . We have not confirmed that. Were trying to get information out of both police and fire department. The first we heard about this was 11 15, it sounded like the calls came in. Its still a pretty new situation. Pretty fluid. Can you tell me a little about the neighborhood of antioch there and if you know anything about the Burnett Chapel church of christ . I was just going through our archives. If theyre correct, in 1969, i had seen that it was over 100 years old, so this is an old church were talking about here. The neighborhood itself, you know, much like nashville, is up and coming. Things are booming in nashville, so its kind of going out in the auxiliary area outside of the main city. Thats extraordinary, when youre talking about a church by your estimation pushing 150 years old here. Okay, sundays in nashville, there are a lot of churchgoers, and the church pews are usually packed. This community of antioch, do you know population . Off hand, i dont know that right now. You know, again, its kind of a nearby area, so its definitely not a rural area of the town. Okay. All right, well joe ebert with the nashville, tennesseens, let us know if you get any more information. Well keep doing our homework here as well. Thank you for speaking with us. And for all of you, after a short break, well get the latest on the nfl protests. Stay with us. Dont let dust and allergens get between you and lifes beautiful moments. Sweet those who prefer heat. Sfx a breath of air and those who just love meat. Oscar mayer deli fresh. Sweet back to the nfl controversy, the president again pushing for nfl players who kneel during the anthem to be fired. These are players at games that began at the top of the hour, kneeling in direct response to the president. The white house insists the president s position was not racially motivated. The White House Legislative Affairs director making this defense earlier today. In the nfl, players who take a knee over a flag that many of our generation preceding us have died to protect the freedoms there, they somehow get honored as martyrs by the media. The president is pointing out that shouldnt be accepted. They have a First Amendment right to do that, but nfl owners also have a right to fire the players. The president is not looking at through through a racial lens. Theres plenty of africanamerican athletes on all of the championships that the president welcomed to the white house. Theyre the ones who chose to make a political issue out of this. Joining me now is joe watkins, a republican strategist. Erin dell more, whom im going to call erin d. , because we also welcome in erin mcpike, for independent general review. Im going to begin with joe to keep it simple. So talk to me about the significance of what were watching unfold here, and your reaction to the white house, joe, blaming the players for making this political. Well, i think the players have the right to tell folks how they feel about issues. I mean, when they take off their uniforms and go back to their daily life, they have to worry like every other person about whatever injustices may come their way. Im an africanamerican. Im glad to be on msnbc today, but when i take off my jacket and my tie, i have to worry what might happen to me when im driving my car. So yeah, i think players have a right to be heard, to protest, peaceful nonviolent protest has always been, certainly in my life on planet earth, has been useful in the United States. Its oftentimes been useful in calling all of us as americans to the better nature of our angels. I know when dr. King and john lewis in the 1960s protested peacefully for the right to vote, the right of all americans are supposed to have anyway, they did a good thing for america. They helped america to see the better angels of its nature, and likewise, black lives matter has done the same thing. They have allowed their voice to be heard. These players, of course, theyre risking in some cases like Colin Kaepernick, he doesnt play for an nfl team anymore. Hes lost his ability to make a living as an athlete because of his stance on this issue, but they are courageous. They have a right to be heard, to protest, to disagree. And they ought to be heard. Erin d. , is there a sense in your mind that the president went too far this time . Im just going to speak based on the conversations ive had throughout this day. They have been very passionate. And at least from the anchor desk, it feels like this is different. This has ignited a national debate. And when donald trump threw out this line in alabama on friday night, his supporters cheered. But he was there to advocate for luther strange, an Alabama Senate primary. He wasnt there to start a National Conversation on this issue. And you have to wonder why the president chose to wade into this territory. This is igniting protests all over the country, emotions are high. And there are two questions now. Theres a question over whether players are right to be taking a knee, and then theres a question over whether the president was right to weigh in with the terms he did. For a president who has historically low approval ratings, who has been seen as divisive since he took office in january, people are asking the question now, why is he wading into this issue and further dividing people . And erin, how does the president s base perceive all this . Because im going to guess that there are a lot of football fans among his base as well. Look, i think Donald Trumps most fervent supporters support him on this. Unfortunately. I was on another network this morning defending both steph curry and the nfl players who are choosing to protest. And my twitter feed has been lighting up with people saying that i am radical and terrible for saying so. But look, i think you played a clip from mark short, the legislative director at the white house, saying they shouldnt be protesting. They have a right to protest, but, you know, this is unfortunate because its the national ant anthem and they neo respect the military. Look, at every professional sports game, you do see a tribute paid to service members. This is not about disrespecting the country or disrespecting members of the military. And in fact, earlier in this hour, Morgan Radford interviewed a man who said just this. This is not about that at all. This is about people who dont have a voice and the nfl standing up for those people. I think that is a really important distinction and it is not intellectually honest for people like mark short to just say, oh, wait a minute, they shouldnt be disrespecting the country or the National Anthem. In fact, theyre being very patriotic. They clearly care about the country and theyre taking this moment when everybody is paying attention to them for the National Anthem saying we would rather we are proud of the country and we want this to be better. This is patriotic, what theyre doing. Not unpatriotic at all. Joe, erin, and erin, im glad you gave me solid answers in the first go round because we have to get back to this breaking news. Thank you all so much. I will for sure have you back again. As we get to this news coming from tennessee, giving you the first still shot there. Theres been a deadly shooting at a church in nashville. In the Burnett Chapel church of christ, antioch, one person has died. Eight have been wounded. The Nashville Fire Department is calling this a mass casualty situation. They say all of the wounded have now been taken to hospital. And the majority are older adults. Among those eight injured is the shooter. Joining me right now, jim c cavanau cavanaugh, retired atf special agent in charge. Hes in nashville. What can you tell us about this area of antioch . What do you know about it . A very diverse area now. Its got people from all over the world. You know, one of the largest iraqi populations is in nashville. And almost as many as they have in any foreign city in nashville. So those people voted in the iraqi elections here. But we have all kinds of people, a very diverse antioch. Its the southern southeast section of nashville. Its between nashville its in the city of nashville, just before you go into murphysboro, where the middle Tennessee State university is. Its right next to the lake. This is an old, established church, apparently. Im not familiar with the church, persay, but an Old Established church. The neighborhood has experienced some crime, growing pains, as that area has exploded, as nashville is growing leaps and bounds. So that area is very popular on the corridor between murphysboro and downtown nashville. So with the exploding population, of course, theres growing pains. There has been some crime there, but its not considered an extremely high crime area or anything like that. So we dont know the motive, alex. It remains to be seen. They say the shooter is possibly wounded, as was reported. So maybe some answers can come from that. You mentioned the age of that church. We had on joe ebert from the tennessean who said he was going through the archives at the paper and saw their archives and saw in 1989 they were celebrating their 100th year. In a few years, they will be celebrating 150 years. Stick around as we get more information we will talk about that. Thank you for being with us. Actually, jim, nick is saying we have to stay with you. Jim, with regard to church going in nashville, i know i have been there on a weekend and you have a very devoted christian crowd, catholic crowd, any who may be worshipping on a sunday. I remember stopping by a church on a sunday and the pews were filled. Thats what i witnessed in nashville. I suppose this church is going to be another one like that. Given the length of time the church has been in the community, a lot of parishioners inside today. I would expect that as well. We have a very diverse, religious community there. We have muslim mosques and Christian Churches and every denomination. So, its very, very diverse and religion is thriving here. So, churches come under attack. Unfortunately, i have worked attacks on all faiths. Christian churches come under attack as well. Sometimes its outsiders who have a grudge. Sometimes its Church Members who feel shunned or put out or attacked or, you know, neighbors. Theres all kinds of motives that can occur. Thats what will be interesting as the metro, Nashville Police department, a 2,000 strong department, very good investigators there. We will get to the bottom of it to see if its one der ranged guy or what kind of attack is this. What we are hearing is Nashville Police department saying the deceased person is a woman who was killed in the parking lot and that six other innocents have been wounded. Thats all we know. We dont know where those folks were attacked, whether it was in the parking lot on the way into church. Nothing about motivation. The gunman is wounded and at the hospital as are the others who have been wounded. One person was attacked, a woman in the parking lot. She was gunned down and she is dead. The others, we are not sure whether they are inside the church at the time or not. Talk to me about the type of weapon that might be used when talking about this number of victims. Well, certainly it could be almost anything here, alex. We could have a person with handgun, a long gun or shotgun. Its hard to tell at this point. A lot of churches have security. They have parishioners that are Police Officers or retired officers who they employ and who do walk around the, you know, the church during services. Of course its imperative you have outside security when ever you have a gathering because, if whatever your facility is, Church Business doesnt matter. If they can walk outside with a weapon, thats where it begins. A lot of times a person is walking across a parking lot with a long gun. That can be spotted. The security perimeter has to start outside any venue. You can look from Charlie Hebdo to any church attack, business attack. When you see people walking in with a rifle, if that can happen at your place of worship or business, your facility is not secure. When we say someone is shot in the parking lot, alex says you just reported. Was there security on the perimeter. The first thought is it wont happen to our church, our venue or Sports Facility is wrong. It can happen at any facility, especially where theres a gathering crowd. Thats the first step in security. Make sure somebody is on the perimeter to stop an obvious attack. Now, you can have someone walk up with a handgun, not an obvious attack, deploy it and shoot the woman, in this case, and continue on in to the church and may have engaged Church Security. There could be Church Security possibly wounded the gunman. We dont know the answer. Could have shot himself and failed at that as well. That happens sometimes. Absolutely. Jim, i want to make a point, this happened to all of you in the last, now its been nearly three hours since the scheduled start of the church service. We are looking at the church that holds service at 10 00 a. M. Each week. Right now, it is approaching 1 00 p. M. In nashville. This has gone down in the last couple hours. Till me what police are doing now, given the timing here. They will be all over this with the crime scene unit. The Homicide Bureau will be interviewing people. They will get a lot of help, the atf, fbi, they will all be helping them. Metro nashville will have the ticket. They are excellent. They are going get that nailed down fast. The interviews and the evidence. Jim, when you talk about a shooting at a church, on a sunday morning, when people are either going into or participating in services, the mind set of someone who does that, your experience, give it to me fairly quickly, what you have seen. Well, it feels like pure evil when you attack a church or mosque or synagogue. It feels like pure evil. The people are attacking holy places and people who are worshipping. It feels often. That energizes your investigation. Jim cavanagh, retired atf special agent and msnbc Law Enforcement analyst. Thank you for helping us with that. There in your home city of nashville, tennessee. For all of you, we are going to stay on top of this. It happened at the Burnett Chapel christchurch in antioch. One person is dead that has been identified as a woman killed outside the parking lot. Eight others wounded to include the shooter. They are all being treated at area hospitals. Well stay on top of the story for you here on msnbc. Imal exwit.
