The virus has caused the closure of religious sites, the cancellation of flights to affected areas, sporting events throughout europe and the middle east. Some countries have taken the extraordinary step of burning or quarantining cash as a way to prevent the spread of the virus. 14 people in the United States have died from the illness. There are now more than 300 confirmed cases in 22 states. Minnesota, pennsylvania, maryland, colorado all announcing new cases just in the past 24 hours. In Washington State, which has been hit hard by the virus, the university of washington is now canceling all inperson classes and in texas the annual south by southwest festival in austin has been canceled. The mayor will join me live shortly. Meanwhile, World Health Organization officials warn against false hopes that the virus will fade during the warm seasons. Trump Administration Officials did their best to ensure the American Public the virus is contained. I would still argue to you that this is contained. It cant be air tight. It is being contained and do you know how its being contained . President trump who earlier today signed an 8. 3 billion bipartisan bill to help combat the outbreak toured the cdc a short time ago. I think were doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down. Weve really been very vigilant. Weve done a tremendous job. Everyone of these said how do you know so much about this . Maybe i have a natural ability. Im joined by Richard Engel a and, doctor, let me start with you. New states announcing new cases today. The number of cases, the number of fatalities arising. What can we expect . How far is this going to spread and how quickly . I think its safe to assume all 50 states and u. S. Territories are going to see cases. Im pretty confident in giving those kind of estimates just because of what weve seen and thats without testing rolled out yet. Once we get that testing rolled out, well be able to verify that. Everywhere we do have testing, were finding cases. I think its safe to assume well see it all over the United States. When you say it will reach all 50 states. The question is how broad do you think it will get . Will it remain a thing where theres a couple dozen cases or will it really explode . To be frank, the infection rate or what we call in science the r naught, whether theyre symptomatic, mild to moderate or severe has spread it to 2 to 3 people. Those 2 to 3 exextrapolate, have spread it to another 2 to 3 people. It is going to get much worse before it gets better. We can predict safely there will be an explosion in cases. That being said, i dont mean to fear mon ger or panic. That doesnt mean well see a dramatic rise in deaths. Overwhelmingly 80 of the population that has been infected with the virus has recovered. When you hear numbers like 125,000 people, et cetera, most people because were bad at explaining science think there are currently 125,000 people in hospital beds around the world dieing from the virus. More than half have recovered, gone home and theyre fine. Thats included people who have cycled through . Exactly. I cant under estimate the importance. Even if you are in the low risk cat kbegory and you are fine, y will be infectious to those nin the high risk category. If you have the ability to do so, make sure you do selfquarantine. Not everybody will have that luxury to do so. In that case, we have to figure out something we need to do. Richard, in terms of the reaction and the response to the government and Public Health officials, we mentioned that 8. 3 billion. Whats happening on that front . So youre seeing every government around the world now starting to or almost every government starting to react one way or another. Whether it is cracking down on public gatherings. While it has now been present in almost half of the countries in the world, at least one case or more has been found in roughly half the countries on the planet. It is still highly concentrated in 4 countries. South korea, italy, china, a and dr. , help me out. Italy. Ill get it back in a second. Italy. Italy. A country i know and love. And italy, well start there, italy has taken some quite extreme measures to keep people separated. Theyve issued public warnings, Public Health advisories people arent supposed to kiss. Theyve closed all of the schools and universities for about ten days. They have imposed a lot of travel restrictions for people to come in and out, particularly in the north. So theyre taking this very seriously and now were starting to see concerns Going Forward as Easter Holiday is coming with just today the vatican even reported it found its first case. So will there be mass at st. Peters square come Easter Sunday . So italys already taking it very seriously and it has been incredibly disruptive for the italian way of life, the Italian Economy and there is a great deal of fear associated with all of the actions in italy. I speak to italian friends particularly in the milan area, people are very nervous. Theyre starting to feel the bite. If you see the images of piazzas in italy, theres nobody there. No tourists are coming. That has been one approach italy has taken and it is paying a heavy Economic Cost for t. There are other countries that have a lot of cases but theyre not conducting testing and theyre telling the public that everything is fine. So each government, i think, is reacting in its own according to its own political system. Weve seen china react, which is obviously the highest number of cases by far, documented cases, reacting in an incredibly authoritarian way. Closing down cities, using drones to chase people. Every country has been responding to this slightly differently and in revealing ways. Doctor, im concerned about practical advice for people. Anticipating it reaching all 350 states, most people do survive. It seems like the elderly, for instance, are the most vulnerable population. Whats the practical advice, youre a family and you have an elderly family member, theyre in a nursing home, theyre about to go into a nursing home. Do you pull them out . Is that a place you should be avoiding . Elderly homes are known for their spread of microbes. I cannot give you medical advice on being a medical doctor whether you should pull a loved one out of a facility. They are at a much higher risk. Typically they have those underlying conditions that we keep talking about that make you the most high risk category. What i can offer is advice as a Public Health Care Practitioner that they need to be practicing more than rigorous hygiene, intensive sterilization, daily, multiple times a day, cleaning more than normal, disinfecting multiple times a day to make sure those patients are safe. Appreciate your help. Dont miss richards special report on the coronavirus outbreak this sunday on msnbc 10 p. M. Eastern time. Meanwhile, during his tour of the cdc in atlanta today, trump addressed the Public Health aspect of the outbreak as well as the political optics. He didnt want the administration to take people off the cruise ship off the coast of San Francisco because it would double the numbers of those with coronavirus in the United States. I would rather because i like the numbers being where they are, i dont need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasnt our fault. He also said he was not concerned about the large groups of people who attend his rallies. Isnt there a risk if theres that many people all close together. Doesnt bother me at all and it doesnt bother them. And he struck an optimistic tone throughout telling reporters they should be positive and even comparing the perfect coronavirus tests to the, quote, perfect ukraine letter. Were in good shape. The people are doing a good job and instead of being negative, you should be positive. These scientists are doing a phenomenal job. The tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. All i say is be calm. We have the greatest people in the world. Everyone is relying on us. The world is relying on us. Im joined by gabby orr and phillip bump. Thanks to both of you for joining us. Gabby, let me start with you. Is there tension here between the message the president is trying to send, the message and the tone that he wants to strike here and where Public Health officials are on this at all . Absolutely. Steve, you dont have to look further than the press briefings that Vice President pence has been giving almost daily now to see the discrepancies between the way that he and the Coronavirus Task force are handling this and the way that the president is talking about it. Just this afternoon Vice President pence said that they are continuing to take this whole of government approach to tackle this virus to make sure that the availability of test kits is improving, to continue to talk with state and local officials who are dealing with multiplying cases in their own states. On the other hand you had President Trump, of course, commenting on governor enslee in Washington State calling him a snake and questioning whether or not the Vice President should be kind to him in his own interactions. I do think there is quite a split screen effect happening between the president and his messaging about this virus and how hes approaching it and the way that keoy officials are approaching this. Phillip, what did you make of the appearance at the cdc. We showed some comments from the president. He was wearing the hat with his reelection slogan. It would seem to indicate some political calculus there as well. Yeah, 100 . Everything hes done so far essentially in responding to the coronavirus outbreak has been focused on politics. You heard the snippet of sound where he was talking about how he wants to keep the numbers down. Theres no reason to try and worry what the number is instead of worrying about the actual passengers beyond that he wants to project the sense that things are better than they actually are. Clearly we saw this morning the director of the National Economic council, larry kudlow, he thought this was contained or essentially contained. This is not contained. Obviously we see the city of san jose, california, for example, is taking all sorts of measures and suggesting against big events where there are lots of peoples. We saw the same with south by southwest in austin. This is not contained. You think of this as a wildfire. Clearly this is spreading across the country, its not contained. The number of cases are continuing to go up. For some reason President Trump continues to message the lowest possible number he can. He was saying there are only 15 cases. Its already 20 times that number. For some reason he is still focused on that metric. We mentioned the disconnect between the president and Public Health officials as the white house and President Trump provided conflicting explanations. They attributed the cancellation to trump not wanting to, quote, interfere with the cdc but trump said it was because they thought someone at the cdc, quote, had the virus, but it turned out to be negative. Politico reports that the cdc had not been informed about the suspected case of coronavirus at the agency. The white house announced the trip was back on this morning. What can you tell us about this back and forth there . Reporter theres a lot of questions about the fact of canceling and rescheduling the trip. Yesterday afternoon mike pence was telling us that President Trump would be going to the cdc and yet they knew about that case that was potentially affecting a cdc officials at the time so that raises questions about how much the president is sort of in the loop with his own coronavirus as he makes his own schedule. This morning they said the president would still be coming. The white house reversed that and gave a number of explanations including during the bill signing at the white house when secretary azar stepped in and said he would be going to the cdc in place of trump only hours later to be corrected and told that after all the president would be given. This is just part of a string of contradictions that have come out of this Administration Just over the past week in terms of their messaging. The president was on fox news earlier this week talking to sean hannity. During that interview he said americans should be able to go to work, that they will recover even if theyre going to work. That is not what were hearing from cdc officials. Quickly, phillip. We heard dr. Fare saying this is coming to all 50 states. Do you expect there will be a change in tone from the president on this . I mean, its just sort of baffling he hasnt embraced the fact that its going to be big zbler j phillip bump, gabbier. Thank you both for being with us. Coming up, more coronavirus impact. Late this afternoon the mayor of the city of austin, texas, declared a local disaster in the city due to the coronavirus canceling this years south by southwest festival. It was to start next weekend. He announced his decision at a press conference earlier today. Based on the recommendation of our Public Health officer and our director of Public Health and after consultation with the city manager, he have gone ahead and declared a local disaster in the city and associated with that have issued an order that effectively cancels south by southwest. In 2019 the twoweek event south by southwest drew more than 417,000 visitors from 106 countries to austin. According to a report released by south by southwest it brought 356 million to the citys economy. Im joined now by austin mayor steve adler. Mr. Mayor, thank you for joining us. I note youre declaring a local disaster. There are no reported cases of coronavirus locally in austin yet. Is this an administrative tool to ensure the cancellation of the festival . Was that the reason for declaring the disaster . We have no present emergency because we have no cases yet here in central texas, but it was something that was necessary in order to prepare for the storm that we feel is coming and as well as to put us in the position to be able to effect the cancellation of south by. Was that the issue . Were you talking with south by southwest urging them to cancel and getting resistance . No. Not at all. The folks at south by came to us early in the process and told us that they would comply with whatever it was that the city and the county thought was in the best Public Health interest of our community. Just talk about your cumulative concerns there a little bit. We mentioned the statistics about tens of thousands of people interest all over the world would be coming into your city for this festival. I think people could probably guess here, but talk it out a little bit. What was your concern about what that might look like in terms of impact . Well, you know, the first and overriding concern is the Public Health and safety of the people that live here and would visit us. That was the focus and it remained the focus of all of our discussions. We had a medical independent board to bring the best evidence based and data sourced answers and solutions, but at the end of the day, this is a hard call to make because it does have a huge economic impact. Im heart broken for the businesses that rely on this income as income for the year. At the end of the day with what was happening recently with additional cases turning up of persontoperson spreading of this virus, it happening in texas, in houston area, there was just one real decision to make in the interest of the safety of the people that live here, and now were going to have to be as resilient with that decision made. The feedback youve gotten. Whats the reaction . The reaction ive gotten is really almost universally positive. I think people are pleased and proud that our city would make this decision based on Public Health issues. That said, ive now joining in many voices that are calling for our city to demonstrate our resilience to take a really hard look what it is as a community we can do to provide a business or social safety net for businesses that are caught in this situation but at the end of the day the risk associated with canceling the event was not as great as the risk associated with letting it proceed. Mayor steve adler, austin, tex texas. Thank you. Thank you. The next phase of the bernie biden showdown it will take place on thursday in six states. The candidates are ramping up their rhetoric. With a democratic president ial race now essentially a twoman contest and with just four days to go until the next round of primaries on tuesday, vermont senator Bernie Sanders is stepping up his attacks on former Vice President joe biden. At this hour sanders is in michigan. That is the single delegate prize of the six states that are going to vote on tuesday. 125 delegates up for grabs there. In a News Conference sanders leveled new charges against biden and his support for trade deals like nafta. I vigorously opposed these agreements. I helped lead the opposition to these agreements. Joe biden supported those agreements. Whether it was iraq, whether it was dont ask dont tell, those were difficult votes. I was there on the right side of history and my friend joe biden was not. A new Morning Consult poll conducted on thursday after senator Elizabeth Warren dropped out of the race shows biden dropping a substantial lead over sanders. Biden has 54 support and that is 16 points ahead of sanders at 38 . Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of hawaii, the last remaining woman in the race is at 2 . Im joined by rebecca kats, Kathleen Gray and alaina beverly. Thanks to all of you for joining us. Alaina, thank you for joining us. 54 to 38 . Thats dramatic movement. If you remember after iowa, New Hampshire and nevada in this same poll it was sanders opening up a double digit lead in a much more crowded field. How secure should joe biden feel with a lead like that right now . Well, if all eyes are on michigan, joe biden should take nothing for granted although he was propelled forward nationally, primarily by the africanamerican vote from South Carolina all the way through super tuesday, but michigan is a pivotal race. Its important both for the primary and for the general election. Remember that michigan went from red to blue im sorry, from blue to red in 20 16 and that was because the africanamerican vote was depressed in 2016 in michigan. Joe biden needs to ensure that he can reach all of those africanamerican voters and build a coalition in the state of michigan. Rebecca, if youre sanders. Zarn is no longer in the race. You have a clear shot at biden. Looking at that gap against bid biden. Do you see any chance between now and michigan she were to make an announcement in this race . I think Elizabeth Warren is a little raw right now. I would give her a minute. She is a progressive but she is very mindful. She needs to figure out if bernie can win. He won it last time. An issue like nafta is so important because he can hammer home where hes done the issue versus joe biden. The problem for bernie is theres no debate for him to show off this point. We think about the nevada debate and we think about how well Elizabeth Warren did and joe biden has been good and hes been bad at debalts. For sanders, he wants that oneonone time to hammer home the issues. Kathleen, we were talking so much about michigan, youre there on the ground. There was Bernie Sanders going after Hillary Clinton on nafta, trade deals. It was probably his most significant symbolic victory of the campaign. Is the backdrop for this race similar or has it changed . I think michigan has changed a little bit in four years. While Bernie Sanders is talking about trade a lot. Hes got a big rally happening right now. Biden is hitting back with medicare for all and those Union Workers who have bargained for very, very lucrative benefits and health care packages. So biden is hitting back. He has Amy Klobuchar in michigan tonight. She talked with Union Members about just that. Im curious. You say theres ab opportunity to maybe win someone. What about the other side . What if he loses . What happens then . We should not make any predictions. Biden had a great 72 hours. I wouldnt say it was over. I think bernie has a lot of chances to make his case. A lot of people said that about nevada. So even if youre a union member who has good health care, you know that your friends and family dont so i dont see that being the only issue there. Alaina you mentioned, too, the africanamerican support that joe biden has and it helped him especially in the southeast. That was a problem four years ago. It has been a problem so far for him in this campaign. When i looked ahead that were going to decide it from this point forward, i see trouble for sanders there in the state like georgia, if he gets any of those numbers or between here and june . Look, there is a segment of the africanamerican cumulative communities. There are more activists i dont know where he doesnt have some situation. However, thu are not the more reliable and consistent voters. Unless he is able to broaden his reach, particularly to africanamerican women, he it doesnt look very good for him. As you said, its a domino effect. Kathleen we talk a lot about endorsements. How much does it matter . South carolina were looking at that endorsement jim clyburn gave to him. I say that because the governor of michigan, Gretchen Whit mer, has come out to address her. Well, it came at a time that the other president ial candidates were endorsing biden as well and i think that those endorsements for it. Governor whit mer has some swai in the state. A lot of the congressional delegation has decided to back joe biden. Enjoy your states in the office thank you for joining us. Rebecca cats, thanks to you as well. Really appreciate that. Up next, well go over to the big board. Were talking about michigan. Were talking about washington, mississippi, idaho, north dakota, big contest on tuesday. A preview and some polling. The biden transferase. Stay with us. Oh have you dined with us before . No, youre youre that insurance guy, arent you . The pasty one . Oh, yeah. Joe biden has said if he does not win the democratic nomination he will support me. And then there were two. It is a Biden Sanders race right now. Remember when this democratic field had two gazillion candidates, here we are a little bit into march. Gotten it down to a Biden Sanders race. We have some polling. First of all, lets go back in time. This seems like an eternity ago right now. Yet it was barely two weeks ago. Nevada caucuses, bernie won them in a landslide. He won New Hampshire and before that he had gotten the most popular votes, first preference votes out of the iowa caucuses. Sanders was on a role. There was a theory out there that this was going to trigger the bandwagon effect. You win the early states, the rest of the party looks at you and says, thats who its going to be, they get on board. Weve seen that time and time again. Sanders looks like he was positioned for it. He led by 13 points nationally. There are some people who might have a problem all underneath him, sanders finally falls behind. I didnt think too much of that theory at that point. Check out the latest poll. Here it is in a one on one. Biden 54, sanders 38. Biden gained 35 points, sanders gained 6. So all of this support sort of consolidating into this, but biden now leads 5438 in this poll. We will see how it plays out. The same poll asked who do you think has the best chance of knocking off donald trump in november. By a 21 margin they were saying sanders. Maybe this candidate can win. They were starting to say it after sanders. Not about joe biden. Biden just won ten primaries. All of a sudden 51 say that about him. Theyre starting to look at biden as a weiner again. These are the states all up on tuesday. Michigan, missouri, mississippi. Looks like its going to be a big win by biden. Washington switching from they needed it. Maybe has to get another win out of michigan. One thick that png that powered support from blue collar voters, white voters without a college degree. In missouri four years ak. In michigan he won by 15. Big reason he was able to squeed it out. He won by 15. In the primary so far sanders has not been performing as well with that demographic. This is a compilation of all weve seen. Among noncollege whites its biden whos a point ahead of sanders. Even for sanders, when you look at some of the states where you got that biden surge, minnesota, for instance, biden led sanders double digits. So sanders wants to do what he did four years ago in michigan. He may have to do what he did four years ago in michigan this coming tuesday. One of the key ingredients was strong doubling digit support among noncollege whites. He may be lagging there. Lets see if this continues on tuesday. Thats one of the first things im going to be showing you. When we get the exit polls and start looking for results. The sanders coalition. Did he put it back in place . If not, well find out. The president is already foreshadowing his and his campaigns attacks on joe biden should biden become the nominee. At a town hall trump was also asked about the countrys deep political divide and whether it can be healed. Trumps people say they lay the blame on him if he wins reelection. I have family members who do not speak to me and recently was told, if you support trump, you are no longer part of my life. How are you going to bring us together . There is a division, theres no question about it. Politicians have to be able to be civil. If theyre not, you have to fight back. I really believe were going to win this next election and when we do the other side is going to say, okay, thats it, lets get along. I really believe that. We have to win the election. Im joined now by christine quinn, vice chair of the new York State Committee and noah rothman. Theres a bit of a message for the base. Reelect me and other people will get along. President obama said relekt me and the republican fever will break. Im curious. Lets try to handicap what a trump biden contest would look like. Ill start with you, christine. Let me look at trump. What do you think his greatest strength is and his greatest weakness in that matchup . Well, theyre the same. The man is a fullblown liar. He will say whatever he has to say. It doesnt have to bear any resemblance to the truth. That is very easy to attack and really bring somebody down, but since hell make anything up, thats his greatest strength as well. He has no policy to taut. Hes a liar and it cuts both ways for him unfortunately. I thought that clip was especially revealing. Not just the president s stance because it was reflective of his desire to say i am on the trump train, i wear my trump pin every day. That to me is reflective of an identity into politics. If that is your identity, then youre going to get into a lot of the flights. Its not especially he didnt invent this. Hes a participant in it. Joe biden says theres a bigger market for normalcy. Not necessarily normalcy. Its a big bet and im not sure he can handle that. I think thats true. I think biden is going to have to our great former first lady said, when they go low, we go high, but hes not going to be able to go high all the time. At the core of who sproois president bi Vice President biden is, hes clearly the person who can bring people together as opposed to that for donald trump at all. Im curious with boldt of you on this. What is the matchup . I think the case for biden and why he would potentially defeat trump. What you were talking about. The atmosphere of the last few years, this is too much to me. Vice president or obama, that sort of thing. Okay. Wheres the weakness though in that matchup . Trump is going to try to play up. Ukrai ukraine, well see that. Folks out there said bidens performance. There is a weakness in the corruption angle. Thats something we began to see polls and democrats say, wow, there is maybe something to this.
