One of the things that President Trump told me in the presidency, theres always dynamite behind the door. The real dynamite is President Trump. He is the dynamite. Woodwards reporting revealed that the president knowingly downplayed the risk of the coronavirus to the American People. Other reporting has also uncovered Trump Administration officials interfering with cdc reports on covid19. This all comes after reports that mr. Trump called mex of the military losers and suckers and a whistleblower is alleging that the department of Homeland Security sought to politicize intelligence to appease the president. Meanwhile, secretary of state mike pompeo is said to resume his controversial madison dinners, despite them being called a questionable use of taxpayer dlargs. The president is putting out fires in the white house and on the campaign trail. Hell face something far different when he reaches california tomorrow. Both the president and joe biden will be campaigning across the country in the week ahead. Mr. Biden is maintaining his lead although some of those are within the margins of error. Let us begin with our panel. Chris liu, nbc senior application effort beth fui. Chris, what do you make of the revelation from bob woodward . I have to say im not entirely surprised by the revelation but in the interview scott pelley of 60 minutes called out that it is unusual for a journalist of his caliber to editorialize about the fitness of the president. The revelations are significant. Its not just the fact that the president disclosed to mr. Woodward that he knew about the harms, but it goes back to a january 28th meeting that woodward talks about where the president is briefed by his National Security advisory that this is going to be the most significant National Security threat that he will face in his presidency. Hes also briefed during that same meeting, the president , that hes told from officials, expert on china, that this will rival the 1918 pandemic. He had all this information and continued to push the false narrative that it would go away, that it was a hoax, that it wasnt that serious. What troubled me along the way is not just the fact that 190,000 people have died. But over the last 48 hours, the president held a huge rally in nevada after holding another one in michigan. His first indoor rally hes holding today. No masks required, no social distancing. We can criticize what the president did or did not do in january or february, but up to this day, hes demonstrating a lack of leadership thats causing great danger to the people in this country. The president s holding a rally in home run, nevada, outside las vegas. Beth, lets play a clip from the interview tonight with bob woodward where he talks about the books agriculture title. The title rage comes from him. He said he brings out rage in people. And he doesnt know whether thats a positive or a negative or a good thing or a bad thing. And also it describes condition in the country right now. Theres a loft of rage out there. Beth, what do you make of that . Well, hes right about that. There certainly is a lot of rage out there. What i was really struck by watching that interview, josh would, was the fact that bob woodward was so startled and stunned by President Trump. This is a veteran chronicler of president s. Hes written books about eight president s, starting with nixon, ahead with President Trump. This is the president who seems to have most confounded him. He has rendered a judgment on the president which is not something journalists normally do. He felt that he had no choice except to step forward and add his voice to those who have judged President Trump. So that really stuck out at me. And to see his astonishment and as somebody whos done this for many, many years, and one would think has kind of seen it all with a whole lot of different president s and a whole lot of news events surrounding their mts, it was quite interesting to behold. Following in on that, near the end of the piece that was on 60 minutes tonight, bob made it clear that he thought he could charm bob woodward, that he thought he could win him over. Soon the interviewers were done he tweeted out that it was going to be A Bob Woodward hit job or Something Like that. Maybe ill get him with the next book. Sounds like hes expecting to be reelected and that bob woodward is going to come around again and want to speak to him. The whole thing is astonishing. Everybody involved in politics, certainly president ial politics cannot understand why any president , let alone President Trump would grant 18 hours so someone who is a beacon for media, which President Trump disdains, but he did. He said he recalled bob woodward at home himself side stepping his staff to do so. So clearly he wants to have this conversation. He wants to have americans know how he goes about making decisions, that he sort of used bob woodward as his priest. Bob woodward is a reporter, not. Listen to this. Nothing more could have been done. Nothing more could have been done. Does he remember what he told me back in february about its more deadly than the flu . I mean it almost took my breath away that there was such certainty when he was absolutely wrong about the issue that defines the position of this country. Now, chris, thats part of what joe biden has been seizing on in the last few days, but before i have to let you two go, heres a clip of what senator Bernie Sanders told alley very well velci. I think behind is in excellent fogs to win this cam paint trump is a disaster, i think most people know it. We also have to give people a reason to vote for joe biden. Joe has some strong positions on the economy. And i think we should be talking about that more than we have. Briefly, chris, before we have to let you go, what do you make of that in terms of how much joe biden is rely on trump is the wrong guy as opposed to saying i am the right guy and heres why. I think biden needs to hone in on this economic message that, look, the economy is in samables right now in this country. It has improved but its not improved for the 29 Million People on unemployment just as importantly, to go back even before the pandemic, this was an economy that was not working for the vast majority of the people that notwithstanding the stock market hides. We have increasing rates of people without health insurance. Thats an important message. What we have right now is two americas, an america that is a very few number of people that are benefitting from the stock market, but the vast majority of people struggling to get by and by and large, thats a lots of people of color its a lot of working americans who are working harder and not getting ahead. Chris lu and beth fui, thank you very much. Lets go to michigan where coronavirus is putting intense pressure on the republic and its government. Lawmakers are collecting petition signatures to strip the governor of her executive powers to set these rules. Governor whit her is being sued over her handling of the crisis. Graduate students at university to of michigan are on strike from their teaching documents they say the university isnt doing enough to keep them safe. The provost calls on them to continue to work on a solution. Joining us is michigans Lieutenant Governor garland gill kril kris. Welcome to the show. Thank you. Lets start with stripping the governor of her executive problems. My understanding is that if they succeed in the legislature. Weighs the perspective from the governors office, from the administration on this. Do you think that youll prevail . Well, first of all, we want to be clear that the state of michigan has had a strong response to covid19 and the reason we lost so many lives was due to the lack of a National Strategy from president donald trump, who denied reality, who lied to the American People and governors having to make the choices that were hard to save peoples lives and weve done that to a large degree and the majority of people in michigan support the actions weve taken. The action by smvp strictly partisan in nanks inspired by President Trumps organization, attacks on the governor, looking to strip away the powers that we have for mere political reasons. Its exactly the wrong thing to be doing at this time. Were going to continue to work hard on behalf of the people of michigan. On behalf of the people weve lost. The 23 people who have died in my life. We need to make sure to keep people more and more safe in michigan and not bow down to political pressure. There was a poll from detroit news saying that people mostly support these measures, although its not an overwhelming sport its a somewhat tight margin. With the court fight there is a federal judge who asked the Michigan StateSupreme Court to way in on the governors use of powers. What does that mean to you . You got the legislature on one side, the administration on the other side. Is michigan ganders. Mitch ganders are getting what they need from our michigan. Theyre not get what they need from donald trump or from the federal government. Theyve not been getting enough from the Michigan State legislature. Theyre fighting because theyre making this political. This is about lives, about people and Public Health for us. Were going to continue to do what we need to do and have the authority to do. The Supreme Court is looking at this right now in michigan. Were going to make policy to respect and respond to science and scientists and were going to do what we need to do accordingly. What about with regard to universities . Theyve been advised to shelter in place for lack of a better term to keep themselves safe from covid19. We mentioned the situation at the u of m. What is the governors offices per suspective on this and are you taking any other steps to intervene in resolving this . Early on we began to work on what the covid19 response would look like for educators at every level. Across the state weve seen our University Leaders step up to the plate and make choices narh following both the recommendations and the requirements that we set for it as a starkts as an administration and different universities have made different choices in that regard. So they have the built ability to do that based on the recommend daigles, which are based on the science and evidence about what the best practices should be. Were looking at those situations closely. Were monitoring any outbreaks that are happening so we can respond and make sure people have the testing and treatment, infrastructure that they need. Were going to continue to do that. Garr Lynn Gilchrist is the governor general of michigan. Universities are not the only schools adapting. Nbcs Priscilla Thompson took some of the parents take advantage of these spaces. I love it because its a school setting. Now here they can actually have somebody physically right there with them watching them that is a teacher and having a teacher. So its a winwin situation. Im at home some days. I will go into the office some days. It just depends. Im blessed to have that flexibility. But im not at home every day, so its important that my daughter can go and feel safe and she will still get the learning shes supposed to. Ive been thinking about kids and what the school does for them. Certainly its a place where they get an education. But its also a place where many of those kids eat. Its the place where many kids are referred for health service, especially for Mental Health service. Its the place where children who live in an environment thats not safe for them, its their safe place to go. I begin to think about our churches that were at this time and still mostly are here in houston, theyre closed. So we have all this space. When we said waits our United Methodist church oechld up and allowed students to come in and have access and provide a loving, encouraging environment, and we can kind of connect with the school district, it will be like a match made in heaven. This is like more of a safe environment for her to be around. Its time for me to be at home working since march, so its time for me to do work and they offer lunch, they offer breakfast, stretch time, outside time, so this is like perfect for kids. My kids go to church because i did not have the Internet Service and plus the time schedule, so like i cant be with my kids and go to work during the daytime at the same time. I think some of them want to quit their jobs. I think they would have been out and hustled look for more friends they could get their kids to stay with. Its just such a heart wrenching decision to have to make. Im sorry that some of them would have had to quit their jobs. Because in this environment that were in now with covid, there rant lot of opportunities, so you got to hang on to what you got. And that report comes to us from nbcs Priscilla Thompson. Back to campus. Thousands of kids in districts across the country cut their inperson educations short. Coronavirus outbreaks forced them to shut their doors once again. Remote learning for some can bring their educations to a halt. Students lack suitable web access to participate in the class. According to the Clark County School superintendent more than 25,000 kids have not participated. Still, nearly 99 of students have been marked present. These inqualities are popping up in districts across the country. Teach herbs, parents and staff are balancing keeping children safe and keeping them on track. How are some educate ors dealing with all this and what do they need to do their job as well . Joining us is randy wine garten. The union represents 1. 7 million teachers from preerk to the universities. Welcome to the program. Thank you, joshua. And good luck on your new gig. Thank you very much. The extended gig. I think teachers are the ones who need good luck. Oh, yeah. This digital divide. What is your sense of how theyre handling the challenges of getting used to teaching either on line or an onlineinperson hybrid. Hows that going . Lets just say that theres no good choices right now. And im often asked whether you know, who is doing this right, and frankly theres some places where theres a moment of rightness and theres lots of moments where theres huge anxieties, so take the fact that 17 of the 20 largest systems are on remote. Remote education is never going to be good. It is better than not having education at all. Its never going to be a substitute for being back in person, which is why we have been struggling to see how we can get safely back in person since last april, weve been struggling and trying to push plans and resources for doing that. What teachers are going through is that this year is different than last year because last year in march, you at least knew your kids under a had done most of your curriculum or six or seven months of it. This year, kpemtd for those folks who are doing looping, which means theyre continuing with their kids from the last year, youre reintroducing or youre sbrursing yourselves to your kids not in place, but in a remote situation. So its going to be very, very hard. We had a seminar this weekends that was attended by thousands of people that we did remotely and we had several kind of professional Development Folks talk to teachers about, you know, what we need to do to get kids violation and access and edge engagement. Thats going to be the name of the game right now when kids have machines and connectivity. But like those Church Groups were doing in houston, we have to get kids connectivity. So you saw there was good ventilation in those plays, they were socially distanced. They were wearing masks. But they had connectivity, which is absolutely imperative. The big thing that unions deal with are what they call w and w, wages and working conditions. One of the working conditions thats coming up with covid is keeping teachers safe. Known working conditions are hard enough when negotiating a union contract. Whats it been like for aft these last few months dealing with working conditions of teachers, whether at home or on campus. Just because theyre not going to campus doesnt mean that teachers dont still have workrelated Health Challenges that need to be addressed. How is that going . So let me actually separate out the deniers and the governors and local authorities that actually believe that there was a pandemic. It is super, super, super hard in the places of the deniers, so because you have a total cognitive dissonance where you know that theres a pandemic, you have know theres certain things that need to be done, you know the resources that you need, and youre hearing people just deny or not give you the information, like in florida, like in texas, who just started a texas tracker, like even in providence where the governor thinks everythings ok and were seeing schools that are trying to open on monday that dont even have soap, so that has made it really, really hard in places where people pretend that everythings ok and you now its not. Iekts dreamily stressful. The places that are trying to figure out how to do things right, most of them started remotely. One of the few places that are trying to do things right and starting nonremotely is new york city. But again, if we dont have the safety apparatus in place, its going to be very hard. So basically, the bottom line is you got to make sure that for kids, for parents, for teachers, that the safety protocols are in place and that trust is earned. It has to be transparent. It has to be obvious. Theres the science is clear from masks, social distancing, cleaning to ventilation, hand watching and reasonable accommodation for those at risk. Right, right. But you also have to have the testing. So the places that are transparent and that are trying to earn the roch teachers and parents are doing better than the places that are either denying or pretending everythings fine. Randy wine garten, thank you for making time fours tonight. Thank you joshua. Coronavirus is making it much harder not just to feed young minds but to feed ourselves. Millions of struggling americans are feeling the effects of covid19 through our food supply, from food banks with lines of cars around the block to boardedup restaurants that have closed for good. Tonight msnbcs joy reed and Andrew Zimmern are exploring this. They went inside one of the busiest food banks in america. It has been feeding nearly 300,000 people every month during the pandemic, including many folks who had never needed help until now. Some workers there say they were shocked in april when they noticed a surge in demand. Its a day they will never forget. The San Antonio Food Bank was expecting a big turnout, especially since the pandemic had tripled unemployment here. By daybreak, Michael Guerra realized they had a nightmare. Cars started lining up the morning before, theyd been there 18 hours, 12 hours, and then they sat in line, they sat in line. Cars were breaking down. Cars were running out of gas. Each car, a family in need. Your heart stops. Theyre there because theyre hung hungry. Theyre there because they dont have work and they dont have food. It was april 9th. On the christian calendar thats holy thursday marking the last supper. At the San Antonio Food Bank its also recommended as a day from hell as temperatures soared. By the afternoon shift volunteers were dropping. Literally ambulances were coming because of people having heat exhaustion. Joy reed also speaks with brad pacely, the Award WinningCountry Music singer. He and his wife creates add Free Grocery Store in nashville. With us is Andrew Zimmern. Welcome. Congrats on the new show, by the way. Much preached. This special is kind of sobering in the sense that its pagesing the picture of what weve been talking about but getting more into the lives of the people infected. We know in part of the special. Where a third of the population lives a mile or far from a Grocery Store in rural areas. Its ten miles or farther. Theres been this report from yelp back in july that said more than half the restaurants that closed during the pandemic will not reopen. Which i think if you just walk around manhatten here where i live, its obvious a lot of restaurants are in trouble. Whats your big takeaway looking at how were doing food wise in this pandemic . Are we going to make it . I pray that we do. But i am im very sfrietened for the first time in my lifetime. Ive been coming on air since the second week in march talking about this story. In fact, the San Antonio Food Bank picture on front of the New York Times was one that shocked america. It was in the a block of every News Organization in the country on air and above the fold on the front page of every newspaper in the country the next day. And the problem has now doubled and tripled. Remember, we have another 25, 30 of americans who have become food insecure because of loss of job, reduced job hours, all having to do with covid19. And then we had a large percentage of that come online after the horrific cultural pandemic that seemed to explode once again in cities all across america after the murder of george floyd here in my hometown of minneapolis. The heartbreaking part of this is that we have enough food in america. Were just not getting it to the people who need it the most. And the entities that are doing the incredible work from the San Antonio Food Bank whose story we just told to the paisleys free grocery in nashville, tofoot food banks all over the country. Theyre simply being overwhel d overwhelmed. You used the term food inscout. We talk about hunger in the u. S. Hunger is a feeling. We do not measure hunger. Food inscout is the capacity of a person to have a healthy active life through their diet without having to beg, borrow or steal. Just to clarify that term. With regard to the paisleys Grocery Store, thats a good idea but how reputable do you think that is . Thats brad paisley. Is that the kind of thing you think more parts of the country can replicate . I hate to talk in Bumper Sticker and greeting card language, but for 40 years ive seen, you know, greeting cards and Bumper Stickers with admonitions that if we just held one less bake sale and build a few less fighter jets wed be able to solve hunger in america. The cost of feeding america pales in comparison to a lot of the big moneys that weve been spending in bailing out corporations that are undeserving of it. When it comes to industries that are deserving of bailouts, i think one that we talk about in the show is the restaurant industry. If the independent restaurants of america dont get the back stopping from the restaurants act thats on capitol hill right now, its 120 billion finance package for restaurants that will keep them alive for the next 12 to 18 months. Then well see a mass extinction of restaurants. That would be horrific for the economy. The u. S. Chamber of commerce pegs that at 250, 260 billion just in the first year. So wed lose the additional wed lose 250 billion if we dont invest the 120. Its a comedy of errors, joshua. Feeding people in america, keeping food businesses open, keeping so many other food businesses alive should be one of the first things we do, it should not be one of the last things we consider. Not too long ago we were talking about the boom in fast casual restaurants and how the Restaurant Industries was reshaping. Now were in the place were in but theres a fascinating look at it killing up in about an hour and a half. Set your dvr for food, the pandemic, restaurant for disaster. Hundreds of thousands of residents are being forced to vaechblgt some of the fires are almost fully contained. Experts say climates change is fueling the fires and has been for years but people started nearly all of them. One fire in oregon is under investigation as an arson. Others are blamed on faulty powerlines, a backfiring car or a party to reveal a babys gender. Officials with calfire say thats what caused the el dorado fire northwest of palm springs. Now the woman creditsed with popularizing these parties has had enough. Jennifer tweet, quote, could we stop having these stupid parties and the problem would solve itself . Unquote. She lives in california and is under volcanoes orders. Jenna joins us now. Welcome. Hi. Thank you. What was that First Gender Reveal Party like . It was nothing like compared to today. The cake i had wouldnt even pass the muster for a Birthday Party there was ten people in my backyard and i had a little cake and we brought it out and announced that we were having a gimplt that was really it. I was an early adapter to social media. By 2008 i had a following and back in those days we didnt create conscious so much for the user, for the audience. It was mou more just about yourself and youre putting out almost a diary that other people can read. The post went went viral and it was picked up by a magazine after that. Got picked up by people in obgyn offices. It spread from there. Humble beginnings, but what made you decide enough was enough . Well, you notify, my thoughts have really evolved over the years. I really have not liked the parties for quite some time but really these wildfires are absolutely out of control. The first time we were surprised, it was like oh, my gosh, a gender reveal party created this nonsense and it was a big shock. Then came the airplane crash, the pipe bomb that killed someone at a party. Now we have absolutely no excuse. There is no excuse to go out in 116 degrees heat and set off a pyrotechnics device. Its the kind of extremes people go to sort of blow peoples minds with what they can do with this jenlder reveal party for other people, like how much of a spectacle they can make it. Absolutely. I think the responsibility lies in several different areas. One is social media as a platform rewards the bigger spectacles. The bigger, the better. The more astronomical or crazy you can do something, you are actually incentivized to do it by instagram likes, facebook likes. The bigger an audience you have, the more commercial opportunities are striebl you as an influencer, as a content maker. That really needs to be curtailed. You see a content creator making something dangerous, maybe a Warning System in place to actually reduce their reach would be a way to o curtail it. I know youre under an Evacuation Order because of the bobcat fire. How are you and your family doing right now . Were actually ok. Its a voluntary evacuation orlando. My home is not in danger of being burned down. I can see the fiemplt its more about the smoke. My familys actually evacuated. I came home to grab a few things and talk to you guys. Please stay safe. I appreciate you making time. Thank you. Last night we asked for your thoughts on peaceful protests, namely whether a true protest can be anything but peaceful. Were share thoughts before we go. Pas a child, we learn that trees are good for the environment. Its renewable. So we can keep this beneficial cycle continuing on for generations to come. Last night we asked what you think of the phrase peaceful protests. My concern was whether the word peaceful implied that a legitimate protest could be anything else. Whether using this qualifier feeds the dismissal of protests that are marred by violence. Jack writes, your questions about Peaceful Demonstrations missed the key point. A peaceful demonstration is a contradiction in terms. An oxymoron. Or the description of what is probably a useless effort. An effective demonstration must not be peaceful. It must disrupt at least the mind of the others. The word you seek is, unviolent. I have been, from grad school until now, in many, many demonstrations. Peace, civil rights, open housing, and more. Even in the 1968 Democratic National convention. We were very demonstrative, raised a lot of noise. Good noise is good trouble. We heard from the former mayor of dekalb, illinois about an hours drive west of chicago. Everyone has the right to express their opinion. This is a freedom worth preserving. I am impressed with the diverse participation young, old, men, women. Patience and restraint of the police has been remarkable. Placing our Law Enforcement in difficult situations at times. When demonstration turns criminal, strong measures are warranted to restore peace. Peaceful protests must not constrain the freedom nor unlawful flexibility of other people. Use of force must be kept in control for police actions, that is, minimal restorative justice. Meanwhile, in chicago, the printers row neighborhood south of downtown. Yes, weve had broken glass but i blame it on the few who attach themselves to the legitimate marchers. I have marched a lot myself. Vietnam, mostly, antitrump. So i believe in the efficacy and importance of demonstrating for social change. And i understand the anger that has to be part of black lives matter, respecting that most marchers control it. May we continue peacefully. Ruth is in hood river, oregon, about an hour east of portland. Ruth writes, if black lives matter supporters were allowed to protest in peace, the protests would be peaceful. And the vast majority of them have been. But the deepseated racism in this country and the Political Climate make it almost impossible for the black lives matter protests not to become targets for groups who want to make this movement look bad. So it ends up that other groups come in and stir up trouble, at which point riots ensue with fires, looting, and vandalizing private property. So its not even a protest anymore. Its a war. Quite a few people referred to this in the context of President Trump. Some said that the violence feeds his narrative of subversive elements taking over cities with democratic mayors.
